Kenny Lofton Clinic

I just returned from a great morning clinic at MLB’s Urban Youth Academy in Compton. Kenny Lofton hosted the event, showing youngsters how to run, hit, steal bases, field and pretty much all the fundamentals of the game. The event was hosted by Canon, so there was also a clinic by our team photographer, Jon SooHoo, who taught the kids how to take pictures (hint: it’s more than just point and shoot, if you want good shots…who knew?).

Canon is also the sponsor of Sunday’s photo day, where fans get to come down to the field and take photos of the players from 11:15 – 12 p.m., so be sure to get your tickets for the game against the Phillies.

Kenny spoke to the kids for a while about the importance of having a backup plan, since they won’t all be professional athletes. He pointed out that he got a college degree (University of Arizona) and that he’s got plans for after his playing career to continue to grow his post-production company. He’s already involved in it pretty heavily and if you want to read more, check out the first edition of Dodgers Magazine.

There was also tons of media at the event – just about every TV station in Los Angeles, but no newspaper reporters were on hand (at least that I saw). I know some of you asked for an update about that.

And, there’s still time to put in your picks for Tuesday’s draft for a chance to win four baseline seats to an upcoming Dodger game.

Just when you think you've seen it all

We actually got booed just now as the game was ending, despite a 7-2 win. The crowd wanted to see Eric Gagne and poor Tim Hamulack took the brunt of the fans’ excitement. He got booed when he warmed up, then again when he left the bullpen and when he got the last out of the game.

Our intern Ryan just told me the only time he’s ever seen anything like it was at a Golden State Warriors game when fans got a free chalupa if the team scored 100 points. But with a big lead, they ran out the clock the last two times down the court rather than break the triple-digit barrier.

A strange night, but we’ll take another win. Seven straight at home.

From the press box…

The last post was brief, as we had quite a bit going on during pregame and I had to throw something up there quickly from Grady’s office. Though you’ve probably read Ken Gurnick’s notebook already, Kent doesn’t think his injury is that serious and the MRI didn’t show any structural damage. But, he thinks it’ll still be a few more days to a week and we couldn’t afford to play short-handed all week.

Also, as you have probably seen, Ramon Martinez was still too sore to start, so Aybar moved over to second, Saenz went to third base and the lineup shifted around.

Meanwhile, Joel Guzman is now here and he just appeared in the dugout. He’s wearing No. 50 and his fellow rookies are making this big league thing look easy. A three-run rifle down the left-field line by Matt Kemp for his first big league homer and a solo shot by Russell Martin a few minutes ago gave the Dodgers a 4-0 lead.

And it’s great to see so many people taking a shot at a chance to win four baseline seats by guessing the first three picks in the upcoming draft.

J.D. Drew just hit a three-run bomb…7-0. Let’s hope we don’t see Gagne on the field tonight.

Young at Heart – Mark Langill

Happy 91st birthday today to Herb Lewis, a Pacific Palisades resident who remains one of the oldest active baseball players in the country. The former jewelery executive began attending the Dodger Adult Camp in Vero Beach, FL in 1989 and will be attending his 20th camp in November. Lewis also plays with the Dodgertown West League of alumni campers on Sundays in the City of Commerce.

Lewis grew up in the Philadelphia area and recalls as a boy attending both Athletics and Phillies games. He watched Babe Ruth in the later years of his Yankees’ career at Shibe Park when the Bronx Bombers met Connie Mack’s defending 1931 World Championship team. Lewis often dodged cars while chasing home-run baseballs which sailed over the wall at Baker Bowl, the home of the Phillies, and resold them to neighborhood kids for a dime, which later served as his admission to the movie theater. "A lot of people I play against can’t believe it when people tell them how old the second baseman is," Lewis says. "But to me, age is just a number."H_lewis

With a name like Tydus…

One of the great baseball names, Tydus Meadows, was recently transferred to Double-A Jacksonville when we sent Oscar Robles back to Vegas. Rather than go in the tank, he responded with a 5-for-5 performance last night, including a homer and two RBI. Meadows came to Spring Training as a non-roster invitee, but was injured much of the spring and did not get in a Grapefruit League game.

However, I realized last night that this is a very tough assignment, given that none of us has really had the chance to see any of these guys play before. So, while you’ll surely be rooting for the guys you guessed would be picked, it’s really only our scouts who have a true idea who our best bet is at each slot.

Happy 33rd birthday to tonight’s starting pitcher, Derek Lowe.

Sad end of May to Nomar Garciaparra, who made quite a case for player of the month honors.

Welcome back, Eric Gagne.

Home winning streak back on the line…

Today's lineup

For today’s game, we’ll have:

Furcal, SS

Lofton, CF

Nomar, 1B

Drew, RF

Aybar, 3B

Ethier, LF

Martinez, 2B

Martin, C

Tomko, P

Kent is still having trouble swinging a bat and he told Fred Roggin on the air a few minutes ago that he’s going to have an MRI tomorrow to see if there are any worse problems in there that we can’t tell from an examination by the trainers.

Draft Day Coming Up

First off, the name to know for today:

Tony Abreu, Double-A Jacksonville: Went 2-for-4 with a homer yesterday. He came to Spring Training as a non-roster invitee with us after winning the Florida State League batting title last year with a .330 mark.

There’s been a lot of talk lately about Luke Hochevar and our decision not to sign him. While I can understand that our fans are frustrated that we basically didn’t get a first-round pick last year, I can also vividly remember Logan White saying last year at the time of the draft that this was a real possibility. The reason Hochevar fell to us in the draft was because teams were unsure of whether or not he’d be willing to sign and though we were hopeful we could work something out, it just wasn’t meant to be.

As it turned out, Ned Colletti and his staff decided that it just wasn’t worth the $4 million asking price. We all believe that we made a fair offer and at the end of the day, Ned’s belief is that if it’s all about the money before you ever reach the big leagues, it will always be about the money. As you’ve seen, there’s been a real push towards team goals here and unfortunately, it just didn’t work out with Hochevar.

In the meantime, we’re going to take up one of the reader’s suggestions about the upcoming draft. Fans can list their guesses on our first three picks (we choose seventh, 25th and 31st) in the comments section of this post. The person who gets closest to getting it right will get four of our new baseline seats, which were installed this offseason, for an upcoming game. This is one of the coolest ways to see a game and the value of the seats is more than $250, so make sure you do your homework on the draft. Plus, it’ll make draft day that much more exciting.

All entries must be in by the time the draft starts and each person can only have one entry. Good luck!
