Flying home, flying high

How cool was that? I hope everyone got a chance to celebrate last night. We’re on the plane, about to head back to Los Angeles and as you can imagine, there’s a pretty positive vibe right now.

Lots of people picked the Dodgers to lose to the Cards, some even going so far as to say the team wouldn’t win a game. But that’s why they play the games on the field.

The best part is, no one here feels like this was the goal. This was only Step 2. First, win the division. Next, get to the LCS. Both were accomplished and with the Dodgers going to the NLCS in back-to-back years, it’s the first time that’s happened in 31 years.  I’d imagine many people who read this blog haven’t been alive for that long (I barely was!).

It’s a great time to be a Dodger fan and we’ve got to make sure that we have a true home field advantage on Thursday and Friday. Tickets are still available for all four LCS games so spread the word and get to the stadium. This team can use you now more than ever!

There’s two ways of looking at ol’ Ned there Wally (drunk and drunker actually, but I digress):
    .
    1. He’s learning from his past mistakes or,
    .
    2. He’s fallen bassackwards into clover.

Even with his late season acquisitions this year, which have all turned out great, he’s still got the stain of Schmidt, Andruw and JP (though a part time JP has been a little easier to take.) I still don’t think he can judge talent worth a damn in a free agent, but another plus is he hasn’t traded away the core group. Can’t forget he also didn’t build much of a starting staff this year. Not sure I want him to be the one trading the likes of McDonald, Hu, etc. to acquire something we need. He’s also going to have a hole at second again to fill. I think Frank will resign him though.

  2. enchantedbeaver

Belliard will be a type B, but as well as he’s doing now, don’t think I’d want him as an everyday 2B during the season. I’d prefer him as a Lacy-type back-up. Hudson will be a type A, but I doubt he’d want to sign after what amounts to his benching. Not much to look at FA-wise. The job may fall to DeWitt.

  3. nellyjune

    From previous thead….

Jhall – if we win the whole thing, Ned’s signing will be thought of as a good thing, don’t you think? His first signing, Andre, is doing very well, and they even mentioned that on MLBTV last night.

  4. jhallwally

What is Padilla’s status after this year? I guess I need a Dad/Eric report card on our farm system and upcoming free agents..

  5. nellyjune

Josh – It was beyond cool. It was absolutely fabulous!!!! I think we are all glad to read that the team knows this is only a step. The celebration on the field really made that point clear, and the interviews they did with Andre, Casey, Joe and other members of the team restated that same feeling. We have won 3, but there are 8 more games to win. Have a safe trip home and even though Thursday is a long way off, we will be here waiting I am sure 🙂

  6. jhallwally

I’m on the fence with Ned. He does seem to have learned from his earlier horrible blunders. However, I am with Beav in that I don’t think he is a good judge of FA talent. If he is our GM, I hope he concentrates on the spin and relies heavily on Ng and White before making decisions about trades and player acquisitions…. JMO!!!

  7. enchantedbeaver

It’s easy to get caught-up in how well all of Ned’s recent acquisitions are doing now. Still you look at the past ledger and this new group of PVLs still don’t balance the books. On the one hand, he’s made some horrible FA signings. On the other hand, he hasn’t made any horrible trades. I have to admit that this year has been virtually a Ned-free issue other than the starting staff. Really couldn’t forsee Kuroda getting hurt nor billz melting down though.

As much as I hate to admit it, I think he IS learning from his past mistakes. That’s balanced out though by the “Ned premium” when it comes time to acquire real talent from other teams.

It’d be easier for me to say for certain if I knew how much Frank ties his hands with payroll, and how much input Torre really has.

At this point in time though 60/40 I’d lean towards resigning him.

  8. jhallwally

Thanks Josh for the update. NLDS is kind of a stepping stone. You accomplished alot, but really didn’t win the big prize. Definately cause to celebrate, but I’m glad to hear the guys have their sights set much higher!!!

  9. jhallwally

Thanks Beav!!! I’m leaning more 30/70 as we have very capable and I think better equipped replacements in Ng and White waiting in the wings.

  10. dodgereric

Hey gents! I’m just wastin’ some time until the boys start blasting around Fontana. Good to see you both on at the same time! Seems like it?s been a while.

Josh took my Message Of The Day: Be happy, but not too happy. We haven?t won squat yet. I say that because I DO remember ?77 and ?78 and that wasn?t anything to celebrate. NL flags or not, all I remember is losing the Series to the flippin? Yanks.

I?ll jump into your question jhall. No, I wouldn?t resign Ned. But that?s just me. I?d let him pursue other options while promoting Logan White from within.

Obviously Frank will though, because he does what Frank wants, and that?s stick to the budget. And to be fair, that?s really his job, isn?t it? I can?t deny that most of his recent signings have done well, but they also have one other thing in common ? they?ve all been cheap.

I?m still reserving judgment to McCourt?s (and therefore Colletti?s) ?love of youth? until they KEEP the core as they hit their free agency years. If their financial conservatism yields to big contracts for Ethier and Kemp and Kershaw and Broxton so they stick around, I?ll say that it was a job well done. But if they stick to their penny-pinching ways and LOSE those guys, I?ll be firing up the kettle on my tar and ripping up my pillows.

  11. jhallwally

Hi’Ya Dad!!! You’ve made my day!! I too remember 77 and 78. Very empty, even though we won the NL pennant. Great to see you and hope all is well with you and your family!!!

  12. dodgereric

Yeah, e! New Mexico’s loss is our gain! California’s creativity quotient just jumped up! LOL!!! And now you’ve got one less excuse NOT to make the next ITD Tour!

June Darlin’, to each his/her’s own! It’s time for the 48 to shine again!

jhall, we’re doin’ jes fine here! How ya’ll?

BTW – 2010 2nd base free agents are a slim group if we let Hudson get away. Asterisks show 2010 option year:

    Marlon Anderson NYM
    Ron Belliard LAD (B)
    Jamey Carroll CLE
    David Eckstein SD
    Orlando Hudson LAD (A)
    Akinori Iwamura * TB
    Omar Infante ATL
    Felipe Lopez MIL (A)
    Mark Loretta LAD
    Placido Polanco DET (A)
    Freddy Sanchez * SF (A)

  13. enchantedbeaver

I’m still on the fence with Loney, and I think Billz may be a headcase, but I sure would like to see them longterm Dre, Kemp, Brox and Kersh myself there Dad.

Dre I believe had a break-out type season, but I don’t think Kemp did even though he got to 100 RBI. I think Kemp truely breaks out next season or even the one after. Kersh’s time will come too. He’s got a different make-up than Billz, one I think that will make him a true ace.

  14. nellyjune

You know 48 is my second choice, and yes, he will find a way to shine. He always does. I am just happy with how well Denny has done all season so far, and then driving for Kyle yesterday was just great teamwork IMO. Kind of sounds like Andre, doesn’t it?

What about Eckstein? He is such a headache when we play the Padres, so maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea having him on our side.

  15. nellyjune

Oh, I think Matt is just going to be the bomb next year. Matt was the one being jerked around the lineup all year. Give him a year in a stable slot in a lineup (2,3,4 or 5) and he will out do what he did this year, hands down. Andre’s got more in him too IMO.

  16. nellyjune

Go Jimmie!!! Anybody by Montoya Dodgereric……………not my favorite guy at all!!!!!!

Angels get to fly home and the Red Sox get to watch the rest from home.

  17. enchantedbeaver

Dre I can see now becomming a consistant 25-35HR 95-110 RBI guy. Kemp I still see as a 40/40 guy who should be batting 3rd to Dre’s 2 or 4.

Loney’s the enigma. Here’s a guy with such a sweet swing who should be hitting .310/.320 20HR and 100RBI year in and year out.

    Martin just sucks.

  18. jhallwally

LOL Beav!! I agree with your assessment. Much harder to swallow as we could have traded Billz and Martin to the Indians for Lee and Martinez!!! They would have jumped all over that.

  19. knouffbrock@frontiernet.net

I think I’ve finally got the Manny bobblehead in the right spot.
    *
LaRussa showed some class after the game last night. I think that whole organization, fans included, show something. Not like one of the others we may be playing soon.
    *
I’d resign Ned. Frankly, I’d have signed Schmidt myself, and who would have guessed Jones was going to turn into a big fat ****. As it turns out, JP’s signing wasn’t that bad at all. Too much money, too many years, but I like the guy. I’ll really be in Ned’s camp if he were some how able to get the O-dog to stay. Belliard too, as a spot starter and bat off the bench.

Good afternoon ITD boys and girls!
I?m still grinning from ear-to-ear! Everyone at church knows I?m a HUGE Dodger fan! Got a lot of, ?They did great this series!?

Cat ? I?m not sure how we missed each other. As far as me coming to any more games, I?m not sure. It?s certainly possible, but I want to be fair to other members of my family who haven?t gone with my mom either this year and/or last year. I just realized that you asked me to post on your blog so I?ll repeat myself there.

Enchanted (boy, it?s nice to type that!) ? When you were talking be fore about a starting 2B for 2010, I would LOVE IT if DeWitt got that gig! I still say that he?s going to be very good. He just needs a chance to play everyday. I know early in the year, and after Hudson got off to that GREAT start that I was saying that I KNOW that the Dodgers were going to offer him an extension for 2010, thus blocking DeWitt again. I thought that DeWitt was going to be trade bait because of it. But seeing how (1) Hudson?s production tailed off in the end and (2) how he got benched once Belliard got here (regular season & division series), I?m thinking that the Dodgers won?t offer him another contract. I love DeWitt and I think he?s going to be very good, if given the chance to play everyday. I still like Loney, and I still think he will turn out much better than he?s showing right now. And right now isn?t so bad either! I still like Billz. He?s definitely got head issues, but I think he will overcome them. Heck the last couple of starts were decent enough. Only time will tell. But if I had to decide right now (and I?m sure glad that I don?t) Kersh is more of an ace now than Billz is.

And I would resign Ned too. Yes, he had some horrible signings before, and yes, I was just as hard on him as the next person for those horrible signings. But I definitely think he?s redeemed himself by (1) getting guys this year that produced (and continue to do so) and most importantly, (2) hasn?t broken up our Young Guns. And yes, I?ve softened my stance a bit even about JP. Yes, his contract was and still is too much money for too many years, but I can?t ignore what he?s meant to the Dodgers in 2009 (and we?re not through yet!) I still don?t think he belongs as a primary OF starter, but he?s doing a very good job as a backup. Yes, it still isn?t what JP wants, but he seems to be handling it much better than he did last year.

    Hey Emma!
Great t-shirt for Ethieraholics!!! Just really quick though, on your blog, it should say NLCS, not NLDS in the title! LOL!

  22. crzblue2

    Well hello ITDers!
Congratulations to the Dodgers and to all Dodger fans!!!
    .
I have not been around because of catching up with my life and I watched the game with friends at a restaurant. Just finished reading here.
    .
    TBW!
Glad you got back home ok and what great games you saw! I posted pictures on two different posts in my blog of you, Scott and the one of the you, Carol and I from Top Deck. Too bad I had that incident where I had to drive back home to retrieve my wallet. I would have given you a quick tour of the stadium but looks like you did just fine by yourself.
    .
    Bluecrewgirl,
Too bad I did not know you were there. We all could have met.
    .
Oh boy! Angels swept the Red Sox. Red Sox sure took a dive at the end. They batted .156!
    .
    NSB!
    Fabulous drawing!
    .
    Carol,
Ahhh. you are so nice giving others in your family a chance to watch a postseason game.
    .
    Ethierholics!
Check the new Ethier shirt being sold at the stadium. I took a picture last time I was at the stadium. It comes in Blue or white.
    .
    Have a great Sunday everyone!

Enchanted ~ So glad to hear you will be moving to my neck of the woods………can’t wait until you, Nellyjune, Dodgereric, Collie and I get together…………what a freakin’ riot!!!!!! Oops, forgot, Dodger4life and Dodge too!

  24. kpookiemon

FA discussions, eh? Ned, too? All I can say is that if the Mayan Calender is right and the world comes to an end in 2012, Ned won’t have to worry about the free agent class of 2013: Kemp, Ethier, Loney, Billingsley and Martin; Broxton is 2012 and Kershaw is miles away.

  25. crzblue2

Last night while watching the game from the Yard House, I met a couple from Merced, CA. He is a Giant fan and his wife said “I don’t root for anyone.” Nice guy for a Giant fan.
    .
    Josh**
So sorry to hear about Dr. Steinberg. I really liked what he did for the last two Opening Day ceremonies, his contributions to the 60’s, 70’s 80’s luncheon, and the WIN events. At the last WIN Baseball clinic, he told me “I heard you on Dodger Talk.” Gee, I never thought he would recognize my voice.
    .
I saw Dr. Steinberg three times during games in the Top Deck sitting in a last row seat, taking notes during the game observing everything around him.
    .
Is too bad that I never had the movie “Fever Pitch” autographed by him. I always said I would do it. Also the CD “Dodgers Baseball, Music to your Ear.” He wrote the song “That’s When I Fell in Love With Baseball” sang by Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis that is included in the cd.
    .
Thank you Dr. Steinberg! I will never forget the last two Opening Day ceremonies! Good luck!

Emma, it would have been great to meet you, CP and truebluewill. There will be a next time ): Thanks for sharing the Ethier shirt.

Enchanted, what part of our neck of the woods will you be moving to?

  27. nellyjune

Bluecrewgirl – Enchanted is moving close to my neck of the woods, east of us in the foothills/mountain area near Mariposa.

  28. Dodger4life

My first comment on this darn thread and I get a submission error, saying I have made to many comments in a short freaking time…….What Gives??????

  29. nellyjune

Okay……..fine!!! Jimmie shines again Dodgereric. I was on the verge of taking over first place for my fantasy league. 3 of my 4 guys are in the chase, and Casey Mears was having a great day too, and then Bam!!! within 50 laps I lost all three …..Denny -( boy, did he mess up a good run), Kasey Kahne and Ryan Newman. Well, if Denny can’t win, then I am usually pulling for Jimmie, Mark Martin or Smokes (and Kyle too – poor sick guy). Anyhow……….glad you got another one, and I am soooooooooooo glad he beat out Pablo (not my favorite).

  30. nellyjune

Well then, Shad, you need to stop picking Denny to win races then if he keeps messing up when you pick him. (jk)

  31. shad80

Yeah I promiss to change my name when Ethier was in that slump but I’m trolling the Giants board and I don’t want them to know me lol

  32. shad80

My gosh everytime I don’t picked Hamlin he’s does well but everytime I played him he always seem to mess me up.

  33. shad80

Johnson 113 This must be the most points that I ever had with any players.
    Montoya 97
    Hamlin 38
    Allmendinger 26

Which I uses Stewart 82 points but still saving my starts on him which I have 2 more.

  34. shad80

The race has started and is drawing my attention. But I’m keeping my eyes on Kyle Russell. He’s an outfielder with pop. He’s 6’5″, lefty all the way. He spent all season in Class A Great Lakes. He hit .272 with 26 knocks in 133 games.
    http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=NON_P&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=457726

I’ll survey the minors for you later, I’m too preoccupied right now! LOL!!!

By dodgereric on October 11, 2009 1:20 PM

Hey Eric, to think the Cards drafted him first and I guess he went to college and we got the chance to drafted him now. I’m looking for a OF’s of Ethier, Kemp and Russell in the near future.

  35. trublu4ever

    SUBMISSION ERROR!!!!!!!!! SUBMISSION ERROR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS REALLY SUCKS WHEN IT TAKES 15 OR 20 MINUTES TO GET ONE POST TO STICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    .
    Hi, Dodger4life….how’s it going tonight?
    .

  36. shad80

Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, Minneapolis, MN
Attendance 54,735 (117.4% full) – % is based on regular season capacity
    Game Time 3:25

Dang talking about trying to get alot of people in that stadium when there capacity is 46,632.

  37. trublu4ever

Good Morning ITDland ~ I don’t know what would be worse….freezing our assses off in Colorado or being totally abused by the nasty phans in Philly!

  38. shad80

I love this guy calling Kemp and Ethier GOLDEN GOD!. He also called Loretta the corpse. I like that sweep picture.

  39. shad80

    WHAT ABOUT FORMER DODGERS?

The Rockies have just one former Dodger, fan favorite Joe Beimel. If they move on, he’s someone you can feel good about rooting for.

The Phillies? Well, they have Jayson Werth, who accused Dodger doctors of misdiagnosing his wrist injury. Shane Victorino, who the Dodgers lost in the Rule 5 draft – twice. Chase Utley, who was originally drafted by the Dodgers but declined to sign. Paul Bako, who – while he only appeared in 13 games – is forever besmirched by being a part of the dreadful 2005 Dodgers. (And, somehow engendered enough ill will in 370 at-bats for the 2003-04 Cubs, and two months of spring ball this year, that he inspired the website http://www.blamepaulbako.com). Chan Ho Park, who spurned the Dodgers for promises of a starting job in Philly last offseason despite our warnings that he would absolutely fail – which he did.

Oh, and that other guy. Ramon Martinez’ brother, whats-his-name. He’s there too.

Big win for the Rockies in this category.

  40. kpookiemon

Will root for Rocks today; need series to go five games so Phils put more innings into the shoulders of Lee and Hamels, and Rocks burn up Jimenez and Cook. My gut tells me playing the Rockies would not be the best thing, in spite of the Dodgers 14-4 regular season mark against them. The Dodgers are NOT that supremely better than Colorado and the law of averages scare me.

  41. Dodger4life

Good Morning ITD, Dodger Faithful and Our Beloved Boy’s in Blue………………….
    .
The team gets a day off today, enjoy it gentlemen, We get back to business tomorrow. I agree with you Khali, I will be rooting for the Rockies, they are in our division for one (which everyone said was weak) and I like the fact that we hold the season head to head record against them. I can understand the concern but we have to have the confidence factor against whomever we play. I just want to focus on the team in our way and concentrate on making them another ball club that we put behind us, on our way to achieving our goals. I would like to see the offense continue to get hits and score runs. Raffy was a big part of this, he needs to continue to drive this line up. Momentum changing plays that keep or put the positive side of the game in our dug out are always big this time of the year. Fundamental baseball as Joe says limited or no errors, on the field or the bases. The pitching has to keep us in the game from start to finish. I am excited can you tell?? Most of all I think is these ball players need to believe in themselves at all times, up by a run or down by two, keep swinging at good pitches, remain calm and perservere. Make this a fun series Boy’s and enjoy the game!
    .
    I BELIEVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BRING THE RING TO L.A. IN 2009!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. bostonpeng

I agree with the team, the NLDS and NLCS are just steps toward the prize, winning the Series. Of course I’d love to see a Freeway Series so we can teach those geographically-challenged guys from the south just who the real LA team is.

I’m not going to be able to head to the Ravine for the NLCS, being stuck deep in Red Sox Nation, but you better believe this fan is ready to bleed Dodger Blue in support of my team.

    GO DODGER BLUE!

  43. shad80

Oh I guess the Cards did us a favor last year and I guess payback was important this year lol.

On September 25, the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the National League West when the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 12?3 at Busch Stadium.

  44. trublu4ever

Bostonpeng ~ Wow stuck in Boston Country and being a Dodger fan must be as tough as it is for me……I live in California but I’m smack dab in the middle of Giants Country. So, for the two of us…………GO DODGERS……BLEEDING DODGER BLUE THRU & THRU!!!!!!!!!!

  45. nellyjune

Boy!! Boblee living in St. Louis and Bostonpeng living in Boston. You are definitely living dangerously, but I am sure you are very proud Dodger fans these days too. Me, I live in Giants country, but Giants fans have been cringing and sulking for a while now, even the ones in my home, but you are dealing with fresh wounds from the broom smacking the Cardinals and the Red Sox upside the head.

  46. knouffbrock@frontiernet.net

Sort of pulling for the Rocks, but I’d rather play the phillies next. I also wonder about the law of averages with Colorado. They are, after all, pretty good. Pay back to Philadelphia might give us a bit more incentive. I’ll take my chances against either one, but I’d rather play Philly.

  47. nellyjune

I love Smallville/Superman just because of Lex Luthor, even though the Lex Luthor in the movies is not nearly as handsome as Micheal Rosenbaum.

  48. dodgereric

Well, of COURSE we want the Fillys to lose. We hate them, thanks to the unmentionable idiot. But, better for the Fillys to lose to US! Right?

    “The Son of Jor-El?”
    “I just said that.”
    “Jor-El? Our jailer?”

    Question for Mark Langill~~~
    .
Jersey that may possibly be from a Hollywood stars game.

    —————————————————————————-
On another forum that deals with team gear someone said that in a store in Virginia they found both home and road Dodgers uniforms for a player named Bishop that looked almost new. The person also said the jersey had number 24 (which was the number former manager Walter Alston wore).
    .
The person on the forum mentioned that they could not find any player named Bishop ever being on the roster. Ever since the Dodgers came to L. A. in 1958 hollywood celebrities have attended Dodger home games. Also beginning that year and continuing to this year the Dodgers have had a “Hollywood Stars” game. The jerseys may have been from a “Hollywood stars” game and there were two jerseys because when they were made it was not known if the player would be on the home or visitor team. The number 24 may have been used because the person wearing it was the “manager” of the celebrity team. The jerseys may have been for comedian Joey Bishop (a member of the hollywood “rat pack” along with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr.).

    Good job Nelly.
    .
Here is one from a movie I watched last night on my computer:
[after accidentally-on-purpose spilling a soft drink on the Minnesota announcer]
Harry Doyle: Oh, I’m so sorry. Here, here’s a twenty. Go get yourself another suit.

  51. trublu4ever

Going to the bottom of the with the Phillies leading…hope the Rockies tie it up and then play several more extra innings.

  52. truebluewill

That’s it we get the Phillies. Revenge time. There should be a lot of juice in this series because of last year.

  53. nellyjune

I was pulling for the Rockies just because of the West Division affiliation. To have two teams squaring off for a chance to play in the World Series from the division that was called the weakest division in the league by our favorite media outlets would have been sweet and had it’s own revenge factor. However, having said that, the Fillies are favored to win the series because of pitching once again……………………..so bring it on boys!!!!!!!!!!!! We play better when there is something to prove anyway.

  54. 32and53fan

It should be a good rematch. Dodgers are better this year but so are the Phillies. It is hard to predict the winner. Hamels and Lee could be tough but our pitchers aren’t bad. Chances are it will come down to luck. It is always better to have a bloop walk off single instead of a smashed line drive right to the fielder. Let’s hope the ball bounces our way.

  55. Dodger4life

    I BELIEVE IN THE DODGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    THIS IS OUR YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BRING THE RING TO L.A. IN 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  56. phan52

It should be an interesting series. The big difference from last year that I see is Sherrill and Kuo in the bullpen. Broxton doesn’t scare me a bit, but Sherrill is a great addition, which I’m sure was made with the Phillies in mind. The Phillies were in the mix for him but they had already made the move for Cliff Lee.

I have faith in the World F’ing Champions, as I’m sure you guys do in the Dodgers. As Pedro would say, ‘Don’t be a-scared”.

For those who have seen the evolution of Ethier as a hitter, his performance comes as a surprise to no one.

Looking forward, Dodger fans wouldn?t be misguided to expect huge things from the pride of Phoenix, considering the striking similarities between Ramirez’s numbers from the NLDS last season and what Ethier just did to the Cardinals in the NLDS.

32an53fan – thanks!! I was shutting down my computer at school and just happened to come on at the right time to see his question. That makes two buffalo nickels for me 🙂 I actually have two now. I was cleaning out all of the change in my purse and saw one, thinking it was the first one I won from Dodgereric, but no, the first one was still in it’s spot in my wallet.

BTW – love that movie you were quoting. I was just watching the end of Field of Dreams myself…………..another great one.

  59. shad80

You better be scares of Broxton this is not last year and he should’ve had struckout Stairs that was a joke. No one is scared of Lidge this year.

  60. dodgereric

Emma, I?m sorry but I can?t wait for Mark. I just LOVE this stuff. 🙂 ……. and …… it?s more interesting than preparing my NASCAR fantasy newsletter.

Searching good ol? Baseball-reference.com, I found 8 Bishops who played in the big leagues, none with the Dodgers. However, there are the minor leagues. There are no fewer than 69 Bishops to investigate, and 5 played with a team connected with the Dodgers.

    J. Richard Bishop played in Florida with the Pensacola (B – league) Pilots of the Southeastern League, a Brooklyn affiliate, in 1938. They probably didn?t wear ?Dodgers? across their chests though.

More intriguing is Richard A. Bishop. He played for the Zanesville (D) Dodgers in the Ohio State League in 1944. It looks like he went to war, because he resurfaced in Virginia (and that?s where the uniforms were found, right?) for 54 games with the Newport News (B) Dodgers in the Piedmont League and 53 more with the Asheville (B) Tourists in the Tri-State League, both in ?47. He spent ?48 with the Johnstown (C) Johnnies of the Mid Atlantic League. All of these clubs were affiliated with the Brooklyn Dodgers, but those Newport News Dodger players could well have worn ?Dodgers? across their chests.

The trouble with this story is that I can?t find anything about when they started putting player names on the backs of minor league uniforms. The Chicago White Sox were the first MLB team to put names on their jerseys in 1960, but the minors were usually the first to do most innovations. For instance, the barnstorming 1906 Cuban Stars seem to be credited with wearing the first numbers, but it wasn?t until 10 years later that the Cleveland Indians did it in the majors.

OK, back to Bishops. Robert Curtis Bishop played 26 games with the Union City (D) Dodgers of the Kentucky-Illinois-Tennesse League, another Brooklyn affiliate, in 1953.

In more likely times for a last name on the back, David W. Bishop played for the Spokane (A ? short season) Dodgers in the Northwest League in 1972. I guess the Dodgers moved that club to Bellingham, because he moved to the Bellingham (A ? short season) Dodgers in the Northwest League in ?73 and a cup of coffee with the Daytona Beach (A) Dodgers in the Florida League in the same year. That?s not far from Virginia.

Craig A. Bishop also played near Virginia, for the Dodgers? Rookie team (A ? short season) in the Gulf Coast League (Florida) in 1989. He also played for the Yakima Bears (Dodgers? A) in the Northwest League as well as the Bakersfield Dodgers (A ? advanced) team in the California League, both teams in 1990. He played a couple more seasons of independent ball.

Sorry, that?s all I can find. Back to NASCAR.

OMG!!! Nelly is right, you are amazing!! you were able o find that much information!!? Wow! I’ll pass the information along. Someone started a thread with that and since noone had responded I suggested Mark Langill. I found it in the baseball fever. It had been a while since I had gone there.

You’re most welcome, emma. Louis Pasteur once said, “Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal. My strength lies solely in my tenacity.” So, I’m calling it tenacity. Most would probably say I just have too much time on my hands.

As I said, I love that stuff. One of these days I’ll get back into the minors for our up-and-coming kids as I promised jhall, but it might be a couple more days.

Junie, looks like I’ll need to get you another buffalo nickel. 🙂

Time for sleep! God Bless you one and all!

    @trublu4ever:
I believe it’s actually tougher for me. While you’re in the home for one of our biggest rivalries, at least you’re in an NL city. If it weren’t for the Wide Wide World of Web it’d be damn near impossible to get news from the NL West in this damned AL town.

    GOOOOOD MORNING ITD
So we are still waiting for Game 1. Wow I feel like a kid on the backseat of a car heading to Disneyland…”Are we there yet”. I can’t wait for Game 1. Now we know who’s butt we got to kick. So who is a better team? Who will be the National League Champs?
    *
So Dodger fan’s are being asked who they want to see in the World Series Angels or Yankees and majority is saying Yankees. I do think it will be a Dodger vs Yankees world series. The history is there and it is Torre’s old team. But Angels are a SoCal team and it would be fun to see the battle of L.A. (which we all know who the real winners are). The funny thing is Dodgers does not want Angels to claim L.A., Angels don’t want to clain L.A…..so why did the owner wanted to change the name to L.A. Angels???

  66. trublu4ever

Good Morning ITDland ~ Bostonpeng, I do think it is harder for you being a Dodger fan in Boston. Here, a lot more Dodger fans are poppingup…..even if we go to SF to watch a game, the crowd is nearly 50-50. Years ago, you would be afraid to wear your Dodger Blue in the Giants ballpark.
    .
GO DODGERS……..LET’S KICK SOME FILLIES ASSSS THURSDAY!!!!!!

  67. trublu4ever

Shad ~ you should be thankful none of the playoff games are on ESPN…….we would have to listen to Morgan and Miller….ugh!

  68. shad80

Well I have no cable so I’m struck with the Angels/Yankees game on fox. I don’t see why they can’t have the Phillies/Dodgers on fox on Thursday but I could understand not showing in on Friday. Last year it was ok this year suck.

  69. shad80

    Tony (Rochester, NY)

Mr. Hall of Fame Joe Morgan, what do you think the dodgers need to do if they are able to turn the tide and advance to the world series by beating philly?

    Joe Morgan (11:07 AM)

Well, the Dodgers need to play as they did against the Cardinals. The Cardinals were the favorite, but they were not intimidated. This year, they’ll play the first game at home, whereas last year it was played in Philly. The Dodgers are on a roll right now and I wouldn’t put it past them to beat the Phillies. But the Phillies’ power is still going to be a key element to this series.

  70. nellyjune

Good Morning ITD readers and writers!!!!!! It’s a very rainy morning, and it’s expected to be pouring by noon. Anyhow, we are in a waiting game now, and I am sure everyone is getting there game plan together.

Bostonpeng – Yep, I agree with what you told Tru. I live with Giants fans, and it probably still isn’t as bad as what you must be going through.

Dodgereric – It’s okay……………..I don’t need a buffalo nickel. I just happened to come on at the right time. I still have the one I got from you last time, plus one I found in my purse the day before. So, just maybe, it was all in the timing 🙂

  71. shad80

Wow I didn’t even know Wayne Brady was the host of Let’s Make a Deal. I guess I missed a week of it already. I really missed Monty Hall.

  72. kpookiemon

Interesting that each of the four divisional series turned on a closer melt down: Franklin game 2, Nathan game 2, Papelbon game 3, Street game 4.

  73. shad80

CBS announced on April 1, 2009, that the series was being canceled because of low ratings. The show taped its final scenes on August 11, 2009,[6] and its final episode aired on CBS on September 18, 2009.[7] On October 5, 2009, CBS replaced Guiding Light and aired an hour-long revival of Let’s Make a Deal hosted by Wayne Brady.[8]

That show been on so long.

Rainy today but should be nice weather for Thursday and Friday.

Funny you should be quoting Superman with the pic I posted in my latest post.

    Hello to all ITD’ers!
I haven’t chimed in, but, of course, totally enjoyed the St. Louis series. My policy is not to critique things too much while the post-season play is in progress, and I’ll keep with that approach. Essentially all of our guys performed well under pressure, and I’m extremely proud of this team for what they’ve done so far. I expect Torre will go with the same roster into the Phillies series, and that’s OK with me.

It might as well be the Phillies that we have to overcome in order to reach WS, although I was somewhat rooting for the Rockies, if for no other reason than that they were the underdog. It’s also evident that in spite of the good hitting that the Phils bring to the playoffs what really makes them formidable now is the trade they made for Lee in August. Then again, I don’t think he’s any more to be feared than Carpenter and Wainright. If anybody showed me extra character and what you’d call guts on our side, it was Padilla – obviously great in St. Louis, but almost equally good ever since he joined our team. I’d like to see him kept on board for next year.

Earlier question arose about ITD opinion for keeping Ned as the GM. I’m sure that Frank will re-sign him, but you can put me on the side of people who would let him go. I don’t know why I’ve never liked Ned – maybe it’s because he came to us from the Giants organization, although that should wear thin after the years he’s now been with us. It’s certainly not because he’s Italian, because I like Italians. I don’t even have anything against moustaches. It’s probably mostly a carryover from his early days when he opted for so many PVL’s, getting the Carter and Baez and Lugo, the Hendrickson and Tomko, the cavalier way of signing Schmidt when he had good prior knowledge of his arm problems. I just think that somebody like Logan White or Ng could do at least as well and deserve the chance. But, that’s all speculation and subjective judgment.

Let’s get ready now for the next step. Love our Dodgers!
    Have the confidence, guys!
You can go all the way this year!!!

Good morning everyone! I saw that ESPN chart of their predictions, and I’ll take Gammons anyday over Olney and Kurkjian.

I just heard on ESPN First Take that they referred to Joe Buck as “the voice of the World Series”. Well, when we get there I will do something I’ve never done before – mute the TV and listen to the “Voice of Baseball”, Vin Scully!

Why women can’t put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Why don’t you ever see the headline “Psychic Wins Lottery”?

Why is “abbreviated” such a long word?

Why is it that doctors call what they do “practice”?

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons?

Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

Why isn’t there mouse-flavored cat food?

Why didn’t Noah swat those two mosquitoes?

Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections ?

You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don’t they make the whole plane out of that stuff?!

Why don’t sheep shrink when it rains?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress?

If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?

    Hi ITD,

So excited about sweeping the Cards! Didn’t want it to go on, short and sweet, and don’t have to face their CYs a second time, so we can rest our arms.
Wanted the Rox to win last night, just to wear both teams out, but hey I want revenge on Phils, that Jason Werth is just too much for me to believe.
OK Starting pitching: tough choices. I’LL assume Kuroda, will be a warrior, and should be in for a game in Philly. Since Wolf and Padilla made the last series, and also former philly players have them pitch games that kuroda doesn’t in Philly. Since Bills would of picth game 4 vs Cards let him start game 1 and have Kid K pitch game 2. Drop Garland from this roster to allow Kuroda in. I know this may be wild having 5 starters, but we are using the same 4 as we would of used vs Cards, and a healthy, competitive kuroda, is as good as any of the other 4. If it goes to game 6, then either game 1 or 2 starter could pitch. I think it best that both Bills and Kershaw pitch in LA for their first time.

  80. dodgereric

I’d give another start to Wolf in game 1, I think he’s earned it this season. I’d follow him with The Kid again at home. Apparently Kuroda is set for one of the games in Filly if he passes a sim game in AZ today and I’d absolutely start Padilla in whatever game Kuroda doesn’t start. What was that stat I saw last night? Padilla’s won more road games than anyone in the majors the last couple of years except for, who was it? Lee? Only if Kuroda can’t go would I think of fooling with this setup. Perhaps if Kuroda isn’t ready I’d start Wolf in Filly and Billz in LA, but if Hiroki is ready, I’d go with him and put Billz in the pen again.

D4Life and Rosie ? Those are really great. Here are some more to while away the time until Thursday. Makes me wonder ? what did people do before there was baseball?
    .
I admit it .. I LIKE trivia, tho it serves no purpose for me since I can never remember any to bring up in conversation. But still, it is fun, so I’ve created this list of amazing trivia that I found to be absolutely riveting.
    .
    1. Snails can sleep up to 3 years.
    .
Not so amazing actually since I managed to sleep thru 6 years of jr. high and high school. And when you think about it, what do snails have to do all their lives? Sure, they leave great slime trails and make excellent targets for salt shakers and little boys, but other than that there?s not much more to do but sleep after an exhausting run across a sidewalk.
    .
    2. American Airlines saved $40,000 in 1987 by eliminating one olive from each salad served in first-class.
    .
Until I read this, I was convinced that there was an olive missing from my salad, yet no one would believe me. Now I am vindicated! I am now searching for proof that the airlines have taken one peanut from each bag .. I’ll keep you posted.
    .
    3. An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain.
    .
After reading this, I realized that I know of many people with the same problem! But that?s an article about politicians I’m working on. For me, it’s usually that my eyes are bigger than my stomach…
    .
    4. Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour.
    .
Well, I’d like to see anyone keep this up long enough to actually lose 150 calories. Now that I think about it, I DON’T want to see…
    .
    5. Donald Duck comics were banned in Finland because he doesn’t wear pants.
    .
This is completely understandable.. I mean, who wants to look at a duck with no pants on? Besides, I understand that it is the law for all birds to wear pants in the city limits of Finland.
    .
    6. If you pass gas consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.
    .
I tried to prove or disprove this, but two things stopped me … I couldn’t stand to look at a bowl of chili after the third day, and my girlfriend threatened to leave me … although it was kinda hard to tell what she was really saying with that gasmask on.
    .
    7. In ancient Egypt, priests plucked EVERY hair from their bodies, including their eyebrows and eyelashes.

Now, this piece of trivia leaves ALOT to the imagination, which is probably a good thing. BUT, I would like to point out, you’d have to be pretty limber to get some on those hairs .. nuff said.
    .
    8. The ant always falls over on its right side when intoxicated.
    .
I know this trivia fact isn’t true ’cause I’ve gone drinking with my ants several times and I’ve watched them fall over in several different directions… usually they tend to fall on my uncles tho.
    .
    9. The average human eats eight spiders in their lifetime at night.
    .
I don’t know about this fact … I’ve seen several spiders at night and never once felt compelled to eat one. Though I hear that spider is tasty if barbequed correctly.
    .
    10. And now for our final fun trivia fact:
Females Lions do the lions share of the work … Males tend to sun themslves alot and some lions mate over 50 times a day… No wonder the females do all the work.

Perhaps the Dodgers starters may not be chosen, But the time of the game is TH @ 5:07 PST and, not too happy about this, a Friday start at 1:07 PST. Geez, I know TBS schedules this stuff, but can’t we have a little longer break after beating the phillies in game one before we start game 2?!!! HA! Game 3 on Sunday, lots of time for the phillies to think about dropping the first 2 games. GO Dodgers!

    The turth about English………
    .
There is no egg in the eggplant.

    No ham in the hamburger.

And neither pine nor apple in the pineapple.

English muffins were not invented in England.

And French fries were not invented in France.

We sometimes take English for granted.

But if we examine its paradoxes we find that

    Quicksand takes you down slowly,

    Boxing rings are square

And a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

If writers write, how come fingers don’t fing?

If the plural of tooth is teeth,

Shouldn’t the plural of phone booth be phone beeth?

    If the teacher taught,

    Why didn’t the preacher praught?

    If a vegetarian eats vegetables,

What the heck does a humanitarian eat?

Why do people recite at a play,

    Yet play at a recital?

    Park on driveways and

    Drive on parkways?

How can the weather be as hot as hell on one day

And as cold as hell on another?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy

Of a language where a house can burn up as

    It burns down.

And in which you fill in a form,

    By filling it out.

And a bell is only heard once it goes!

English was invented by people, not computers.

And it reflects the creativity of the human race.

(Which of course isn’t a race at all)

    That is why,

When the stars are out, they are visible

But when the lights are out, they are invisible

And it’s why when I wind up my watch,

    It starts.

But when I wind up this poem,

    It ends..

My favorite Yogi-ism, albeit a newer one (and approximated, since I can’t remember it word-for-word):

Yogi’s daughter came to him with a problem regarding what would happen after he passes away. “Dad, I know you don’t like talking about this, but I figured I’d get your opinion. You were born in St. Louis, played most of your ball in New York City, and now live in New Jersey. Where would you like to be buried?”

    Yogi’s response: “I don’t know. Surprise me.”

    @nellyjune:
At least you (and other Dodger fans living in other NL cities) have the chance to go to your local stadiums and see our boys play. Being able to do it without hiring bodyguards is a bonus. =)

    @getoutofhere:
You’re absolutely right. Ever since the Halos owners started using the mouthful of a name I’ve referred to the team as The Team Who Can’t Read A Frickin’ Map. And yes, I’m hoping for a Freeway Series just so we can show once for all which team is the Real LA Team.

    @messagebear:
I’m hoping they let go of Ned too. While he’s gotten us some damned good players (I don’t include Manny in that number since I hate his breathing guts, no matter how much he helps us win games) but I also look at some of the good players he’s allowed to go to other teams (I’m looking at you, J.D. Drew).

    @perumike:
I wish I could have the same option. Too many times during too many games on the telly I’ve wondered how Scully called the play. Waiting for clips on MLB.com always takes too damned long and they never have all the calls I want to hear.

    @koufax:
    Hell yeah!

    @eric:
Great rotation. Your fingers to Joe’s ears . . .

    @all:
Enjoy your Hump Day, y’all. It’s one day closer to our opening up a can of whupass on the Phills.

/me checks the Bruins schedule to see if the asshat roomies need to get told NLCSg1 is a hell of a lot more important than yet another early season hockey game
