Flying home, flying high
How cool was that? I hope everyone got a chance to celebrate last night. We’re on the plane, about to head back to Los Angeles and as you can imagine, there’s a pretty positive vibe right now.
Lots of people picked the Dodgers to lose to the Cards, some even going so far as to say the team wouldn’t win a game. But that’s why they play the games on the field.
The best part is, no one here feels like this was the goal. This was only Step 2. First, win the division. Next, get to the LCS. Both were accomplished and with the Dodgers going to the NLCS in back-to-back years, it’s the first time that’s happened in 31 years. I’d imagine many people who read this blog haven’t been alive for that long (I barely was!).
It’s a great time to be a Dodger fan and we’ve got to make sure that we have a true home field advantage on Thursday and Friday. Tickets are still available for all four LCS games so spread the word and get to the stadium. This team can use you now more than ever!

There’s two ways of looking at ol’ Ned there Wally (drunk and drunker actually, but I digress):

1. He’s learning from his past mistakes or,

2. He’s fallen bassackwards into clover.
Even with his late season acquisitions this year, which have all turned out great, he’s still got the stain of Schmidt, Andruw and JP (though a part time JP has been a little easier to take.) I still don’t think he can judge talent worth a damn in a free agent, but another plus is he hasn’t traded away the core group. Can’t forget he also didn’t build much of a starting staff this year. Not sure I want him to be the one trading the likes of McDonald, Hu, etc. to acquire something we need. He’s also going to have a hole at second again to fill. I think Frank will resign him though.
No bidet Wally – but there’s seasonal creeks nearby.

Belliard will be a type B, but as well as he’s doing now, don’t think I’d want him as an everyday 2B during the season. I’d prefer him as a Lacy-type back-up. Hudson will be a type A, but I doubt he’d want to sign after what amounts to his benching. Not much to look at FA-wise. The job may fall to DeWitt.

Jhall – if we win the whole thing, Ned’s signing will be thought of as a good thing, don’t you think? His first signing, Andre, is doing very well, and they even mentioned that on MLBTV last night.
What is Padilla’s status after this year? I guess I need a Dad/Eric report card on our farm system and upcoming free agents..
Josh – It was beyond cool. It was absolutely fabulous!!!! I think we are all glad to read that the team knows this is only a step. The celebration on the field really made that point clear, and the interviews they did with Andre, Casey, Joe and other members of the team restated that same feeling. We have won 3, but there are 8 more games to win. Have a safe trip home and even though Thursday is a long way off, we will be here waiting I am sure 🙂
I’m on the fence with Ned. He does seem to have learned from his earlier horrible blunders. However, I am with Beav in that I don’t think he is a good judge of FA talent. If he is our GM, I hope he concentrates on the spin and relies heavily on Ng and White before making decisions about trades and player acquisitions…. JMO!!!

It’s easy to get caught-up in how well all of Ned’s recent acquisitions are doing now. Still you look at the past ledger and this new group of PVLs still don’t balance the books. On the one hand, he’s made some horrible FA signings. On the other hand, he hasn’t made any horrible trades. I have to admit that this year has been virtually a Ned-free issue other than the starting staff. Really couldn’t forsee Kuroda getting hurt nor billz melting down though.
As much as I hate to admit it, I think he IS learning from his past mistakes. That’s balanced out though by the “Ned premium” when it comes time to acquire real talent from other teams.
It’d be easier for me to say for certain if I knew how much Frank ties his hands with payroll, and how much input Torre really has.
At this point in time though 60/40 I’d lean towards resigning him.
Thanks Josh for the update. NLDS is kind of a stepping stone. You accomplished alot, but really didn’t win the big prize. Definately cause to celebrate, but I’m glad to hear the guys have their sights set much higher!!!

Obviously Frank will though, because he does what Frank wants, and that?s stick to the budget. And to be fair, that?s really his job, isn?t it? I can?t deny that most of his recent signings have done well, but they also have one other thing in common ? they?ve all been cheap.
I?m still reserving judgment to McCourt?s (and therefore Colletti?s) ?love of youth? until they KEEP the core as they hit their free agency years. If their financial conservatism yields to big contracts for Ethier and Kemp and Kershaw and Broxton so they stick around, I?ll say that it was a job well done. But if they stick to their penny-pinching ways and LOSE those guys, I?ll be firing up the kettle on my tar and ripping up my pillows.

Dre I believe had a break-out type season, but I don’t think Kemp did even though he got to 100 RBI. I think Kemp truely breaks out next season or even the one after. Kersh’s time will come too. He’s got a different make-up than Billz, one I think that will make him a true ace.

You know 48 is my second choice, and yes, he will find a way to shine. He always does. I am just happy with how well Denny has done all season so far, and then driving for Kyle yesterday was just great teamwork IMO. Kind of sounds like Andre, doesn’t it?
What about Eckstein? He is such a headache when we play the Padres, so maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea having him on our side.
Oh, I think Matt is just going to be the bomb next year. Matt was the one being jerked around the lineup all year. Give him a year in a stable slot in a lineup (2,3,4 or 5) and he will out do what he did this year, hands down. Andre’s got more in him too IMO.

Dre I can see now becomming a consistant 25-35HR 95-110 RBI guy. Kemp I still see as a 40/40 guy who should be batting 3rd to Dre’s 2 or 4.
Loney’s the enigma. Here’s a guy with such a sweet swing who should be hitting .310/.320 20HR and 100RBI year in and year out.

The race has started and is drawing my attention. But I’m keeping my eyes on Kyle Russell. He’s an outfielder with pop. He’s 6’5″, lefty all the way. He spent all season in Class A Great Lakes. He hit .272 with 26 knocks in 133 games.

I’d resign Ned. Frankly, I’d have signed Schmidt myself, and who would have guessed Jones was going to turn into a big fat ****. As it turns out, JP’s signing wasn’t that bad at all. Too much money, too many years, but I like the guy. I’ll really be in Ned’s camp if he were some how able to get the O-dog to stay. Belliard too, as a spot starter and bat off the bench.

I?m still grinning from ear-to-ear! Everyone at church knows I?m a HUGE Dodger fan! Got a lot of, ?They did great this series!?
Cat ? I?m not sure how we missed each other. As far as me coming to any more games, I?m not sure. It?s certainly possible, but I want to be fair to other members of my family who haven?t gone with my mom either this year and/or last year. I just realized that you asked me to post on your blog so I?ll repeat myself there.
Enchanted (boy, it?s nice to type that!) ? When you were talking be fore about a starting 2B for 2010, I would LOVE IT if DeWitt got that gig! I still say that he?s going to be very good. He just needs a chance to play everyday. I know early in the year, and after Hudson got off to that GREAT start that I was saying that I KNOW that the Dodgers were going to offer him an extension for 2010, thus blocking DeWitt again. I thought that DeWitt was going to be trade bait because of it. But seeing how (1) Hudson?s production tailed off in the end and (2) how he got benched once Belliard got here (regular season & division series), I?m thinking that the Dodgers won?t offer him another contract. I love DeWitt and I think he?s going to be very good, if given the chance to play everyday. I still like Loney, and I still think he will turn out much better than he?s showing right now. And right now isn?t so bad either! I still like Billz. He?s definitely got head issues, but I think he will overcome them. Heck the last couple of starts were decent enough. Only time will tell. But if I had to decide right now (and I?m sure glad that I don?t) Kersh is more of an ace now than Billz is.
And I would resign Ned too. Yes, he had some horrible signings before, and yes, I was just as hard on him as the next person for those horrible signings. But I definitely think he?s redeemed himself by (1) getting guys this year that produced (and continue to do so) and most importantly, (2) hasn?t broken up our Young Guns. And yes, I?ve softened my stance a bit even about JP. Yes, his contract was and still is too much money for too many years, but I can?t ignore what he?s meant to the Dodgers in 2009 (and we?re not through yet!) I still don?t think he belongs as a primary OF starter, but he?s doing a very good job as a backup. Yes, it still isn?t what JP wants, but he seems to be handling it much better than he did last year.
And YEAH!!! The Angels FINALLY got past their postseason demons; the Red Sox!!!
We’re one step closer to a Freeway Series in November!!! 🙂

FA discussions, eh? Ned, too? All I can say is that if the Mayan Calender is right and the world comes to an end in 2012, Ned won’t have to worry about the free agent class of 2013: Kemp, Ethier, Loney, Billingsley and Martin; Broxton is 2012 and Kershaw is miles away.
Last night while watching the game from the Yard House, I met a couple from Merced, CA. He is a Giant fan and his wife said “I don’t root for anyone.” Nice guy for a Giant fan.

So sorry to hear about Dr. Steinberg. I really liked what he did for the last two Opening Day ceremonies, his contributions to the 60’s, 70’s 80’s luncheon, and the WIN events. At the last WIN Baseball clinic, he told me “I heard you on Dodger Talk.” Gee, I never thought he would recognize my voice.

I saw Dr. Steinberg three times during games in the Top Deck sitting in a last row seat, taking notes during the game observing everything around him.

Is too bad that I never had the movie “Fever Pitch” autographed by him. I always said I would do it. Also the CD “Dodgers Baseball, Music to your Ear.” He wrote the song “That’s When I Fell in Love With Baseball” sang by Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis that is included in the cd.

The Rockies have just one former Dodger, fan favorite Joe Beimel. If they move on, he’s someone you can feel good about rooting for.
The Phillies? Well, they have Jayson Werth, who accused Dodger doctors of misdiagnosing his wrist injury. Shane Victorino, who the Dodgers lost in the Rule 5 draft – twice. Chase Utley, who was originally drafted by the Dodgers but declined to sign. Paul Bako, who – while he only appeared in 13 games – is forever besmirched by being a part of the dreadful 2005 Dodgers. (And, somehow engendered enough ill will in 370 at-bats for the 2003-04 Cubs, and two months of spring ball this year, that he inspired the website http://www.blamepaulbako.com). Chan Ho Park, who spurned the Dodgers for promises of a starting job in Philly last offseason despite our warnings that he would absolutely fail – which he did.

Big win for the Rockies in this category.
Will root for Rocks today; need series to go five games so Phils put more innings into the shoulders of Lee and Hamels, and Rocks burn up Jimenez and Cook. My gut tells me playing the Rockies would not be the best thing, in spite of the Dodgers 14-4 regular season mark against them. The Dodgers are NOT that supremely better than Colorado and the law of averages scare me.

The team gets a day off today, enjoy it gentlemen, We get back to business tomorrow. I agree with you Khali, I will be rooting for the Rockies, they are in our division for one (which everyone said was weak) and I like the fact that we hold the season head to head record against them. I can understand the concern but we have to have the confidence factor against whomever we play. I just want to focus on the team in our way and concentrate on making them another ball club that we put behind us, on our way to achieving our goals. I would like to see the offense continue to get hits and score runs. Raffy was a big part of this, he needs to continue to drive this line up. Momentum changing plays that keep or put the positive side of the game in our dug out are always big this time of the year. Fundamental baseball as Joe says limited or no errors, on the field or the bases. The pitching has to keep us in the game from start to finish. I am excited can you tell?? Most of all I think is these ball players need to believe in themselves at all times, up by a run or down by two, keep swinging at good pitches, remain calm and perservere. Make this a fun series Boy’s and enjoy the game!

On another forum that deals with team gear someone said that in a store in Virginia they found both home and road Dodgers uniforms for a player named Bishop that looked almost new. The person also said the jersey had number 24 (which was the number former manager Walter Alston wore).

The person on the forum mentioned that they could not find any player named Bishop ever being on the roster. Ever since the Dodgers came to L. A. in 1958 hollywood celebrities have attended Dodger home games. Also beginning that year and continuing to this year the Dodgers have had a “Hollywood Stars” game. The jerseys may have been from a “Hollywood stars” game and there were two jerseys because when they were made it was not known if the player would be on the home or visitor team. The number 24 may have been used because the person wearing it was the “manager” of the celebrity team. I was pulling for the Rockies just because of the West Division affiliation. To have two teams squaring off for a chance to play in the World Series from the division that was called the weakest division in the league by our favorite media outlets would have been sweet and had it’s own revenge factor. However, having said that, the Fillies are favored to win the series because of pitching once again……………………..so bring it on boys!!!!!!!!!!!! We play better when there is something to prove anyway.

It should be a good rematch. Dodgers are better this year but so are the Phillies. It is hard to predict the winner. Hamels and Lee could be tough but our pitchers aren’t bad. Chances are it will come down to luck. It is always better to have a bloop walk off single instead of a smashed line drive right to the fielder. Let’s hope the ball bounces our way.

It should be an interesting series. The big difference from last year that I see is Sherrill and Kuo in the bullpen. Broxton doesn’t scare me a bit, but Sherrill is a great addition, which I’m sure was made with the Phillies in mind. The Phillies were in the mix for him but they had already made the move for Cliff Lee.
I have faith in the World F’ing Champions, as I’m sure you guys do in the Dodgers. As Pedro would say, ‘Don’t be a-scared”.

Searching good ol? Baseball-reference.com, I found 8 Bishops who played in the big leagues, none with the Dodgers. However, there are the minor leagues. There are no fewer than 69 Bishops to investigate, and 5 played with a team connected with the Dodgers.
J. Richard Bishop played in Florida with the Pensacola (B – league) Pilots of the Southeastern League, a Brooklyn affiliate, in 1938. They probably didn?t wear ?Dodgers? across their chests though.
More intriguing is Richard A. Bishop. He played for the Zanesville (D) Dodgers in the Ohio State League in 1944. It looks like he went to war, because he resurfaced in Virginia (and that?s where the uniforms were found, right?) for 54 games with the Newport News (B) Dodgers in the Piedmont League and 53 more with the Asheville (B) Tourists in the Tri-State League, both in ?47. The trouble with this story is that I can?t find anything about when they started putting player names on the backs of minor league uniforms. The Chicago White Sox were the first MLB team to put names on their jerseys in 1960, but the minors were usually the first to do most innovations. For instance, the barnstorming 1906 Cuban Stars seem to be credited with wearing the first numbers, but it wasn?t until 10 years later that the Cleveland Indians did it in the majors.
OK, back to Bishops. Robert Curtis Bishop played 26 games with the Union City (D) Dodgers of the Kentucky-Illinois-Tennesse League, another Brooklyn affiliate, in 1953.
In more likely times for a last name on the back, David W. Bishop played for the Spokane (A ? short season) Dodgers in the Northwest League in 1972. I guess the Dodgers moved that club to Bellingham, because he moved to the Bellingham (A ? short season) Dodgers in the Northwest League in ?73 and a cup of coffee with the Daytona Beach (A) Dodgers in the Florida League in the same year. That?s not far from Virginia.
Craig A. Bishop also played near Virginia, for the Dodgers? Rookie team (A ? short season) in the Gulf Coast League (Florida) in 1989. He also played for the Yakima Bears (Dodgers? A) in the Northwest League as well as the Bakersfield Dodgers (A ? advanced) team in the California League, both teams in 1990. He played a couple more seasons of independent ball.

Well, the Dodgers need to play as they did against the Cardinals. The Cardinals were the favorite, but they were not intimidated. This year, they’ll play the first game at home, whereas last year it was played in Philly. The Dodgers are on a roll right now and I wouldn’t put it past them to beat the Phillies. But the Phillies’ power is still going to be a key element to this series.

Hello to all ITD’ers!
I haven’t chimed in, but, of course, totally enjoyed the St. Louis series. My policy is not to critique things too much while the post-season play is in progress, and I’ll keep with that approach. Essentially all of our guys performed well under pressure, and I’m extremely proud of this team for what they’ve done so far. I expect Torre will go with the same roster into the Phillies series, and that’s OK with me.
It might as well be the Phillies that we have to overcome in order to reach WS, although I was somewhat rooting for the Rockies, if for no other reason than that they were the underdog. It’s also evident that in spite of the good hitting that the Phils bring to the playoffs what really makes them formidable now is the trade they made for Lee in August. Then again, I don’t think he’s any more to be feared than Carpenter and Wainright. If anybody showed me extra character and what you’d call guts on our side, it was Padilla – obviously great in St. Louis, but almost equally good ever since he joined our team. I’d like to see him kept on board for next year.
Earlier question arose about ITD opinion for keeping Ned as the GM. I’m sure that Frank will re-sign him, but you can put me on the side of people who would let him go. I don’t know why I’ve never liked Ned – maybe it’s because he came to us from the Giants organization, although that should wear thin after the years he’s now been with us. It’s certainly not because he’s Italian, because I like Italians. I don’t even have anything against moustaches. It’s probably mostly a carryover from his early days when he opted for so many PVL’s, getting the Carter and Baez and Lugo, the Hendrickson and Tomko, the cavalier way of signing Schmidt when he had good prior knowledge of his arm problems. I just think that somebody like Logan White or Ng could do at least as well and deserve the chance. But, that’s all speculation and subjective judgment.

So excited about sweeping the Cards! Didn’t want it to go on, short and sweet, and don’t have to face their CYs a second time, so we can rest our arms.
Wanted the Rox to win last night, just to wear both teams out, but hey I want revenge on Phils, that Jason Werth is just too much for me to believe.
OK Starting pitching: tough choices. I’LL assume Kuroda, will be a warrior, and should be in for a game in Philly. Since Wolf and Padilla made the last series, and also former philly players have them pitch games that kuroda doesn’t in Philly. Since Bills would of picth game 4 vs Cards let him start game 1 and have Kid K pitch game 2. Drop Garland from this roster to allow Kuroda in. I know this may be wild having 5 starters, but we are using the same 4 as we would of used vs Cards, and a healthy, competitive kuroda, is as good as any of the other 4. If it goes to game 6, then either game 1 or 2 starter could pitch. I think it best that both Bills and Kershaw pitch in LA for their first time.
I’d give another start to Wolf in game 1, I think he’s earned it this season. I’d follow him with The Kid again at home. Apparently Kuroda is set for one of the games in Filly if he passes a sim game in AZ today and I’d absolutely start Padilla in whatever game Kuroda doesn’t start. What was that stat I saw last night? Padilla’s won more road games than anyone in the majors the last couple of years except for, who was it? Lee? Only if Kuroda can’t go would I think of fooling with this setup. Perhaps if Kuroda isn’t ready I’d start Wolf in Filly and Billz in LA, but if Hiroki is ready, I’d go with him and put Billz in the pen again.

I admit it .. I LIKE trivia, tho it serves no purpose for me since I can never remember any to bring up in conversation. But still, it is fun, so I’ve created this list of amazing trivia that I found to be absolutely riveting.
