Postseason Bound!!!
A little late on this post, but worth the wait, right?? The place was nuts last night, so hopefully everyone has saved some energy for the postseason! Believe it or not, we’re the only NL team to go to the playoffs three of the last four years and four of the last six. There’s something to be said for that, I think.
Game 1 will be Wednesday at 6:37 p.m. with Randy Wolf on the hill and Game 2 will be at 3:07 p.m. with Clayton Kershaw on the hill.
Hope you’ll all be here supporting your team as you have all year long! And if you can’t be here, tune in on TBS on KABC 790/KHJ 930.

Saturday was an ugly anniversary for the Dodgers on several counts. In 1951, Ralph Branca gave up a three-run homer by Bobby Thomson in the bottom of the ninth inning at New York’s Polo Grounds as the New York Giants won the NL pennant with a stunning 5-4 win in the deciding game of a three-game playoff.
In 1962, the Dodgers lost the third and deciding game of another three-game playoff with the Giants, who rallied with four runs in the ninth to win 6-4 at Los Angeles and advanced to the World Series.
Urgh sorry I knew about the 1951 didn’t know about the 1962.

I give a pass for Padilla getting picked off second base but there is no excuse for that happening to Repko. I HATE to see mental errors like that. Repko has a history of making stupid mistakes in the guise of being enthusiastic and hard charging. He must have a pea sized brain or something. Compare him to Manny. Manny looks lazy sometimes the way he goes after balls. But Manny immediately can judge where a ball is going and how much effort is needed. He knows he can no matter how hard he tries or how fast he runs, certain balls are going to be a double no matter what so he just takes it easy and casually gets the ball back to the infield. He also knows when to just turn and watch a ball sail over the fence. Repko, on the other hand, seems to have some delusions that he can get to balls no matter what so he has crashed into the wall on a home run 4 or 5 rows in the bleachers. I’m sorry to vent like this but it REALLY steams me when I see a MLB player that makes stupid mental mistakes.
I want to see Ausmus PH for someone lol.
Doug went from .214 to .333 with those 3 hits today.

I’d take Repko defense over Manny lazyness defense anyday of the week.

Got to thinking about the playoff roster and wrote down the names of the guys I would take. Came up with 5 to many. Joe and staff have some tough choices to make Tuesday night.

I’m praying we jump out to a huge 1st inning lead but it’s not going to be tough. I wish Ausmus would had used Haeger instead of Troncoso.

Since my phone kept me in the loop today, it seemed like a great game today for a season finale. The Cards are going to be tough, but the playoffs are a whole new ballgame, and anything can happen, especially when you have home field advantage.
That was a nice way to end the regular season. Torre has his work cut out coming up with the playoff roster. I am looking forward to Wednesday.

That leaves a choice between Mota and Weaver.

There’s a possibility that Castro might supplant Thome until we get to the AL opponent, but I doubt it.
So there’s my prediction. Not necessarily who I want, but my prediction. What do you think? I believe they have until 7AM (Pacific) on Wednesday to submit it, so we probably have some time to banter about it.
I’m hoping we’ve shaken the offensive doldrums now and can move aggressively into the postseason. One things’ for sure, no one else is setting the world on fire at the moment either.

YEAH!!! It took a LONG time, but we got what we wanted! NL West Division Champs and HF advantage!!! Actually on Saturday, we were at a concert. But it got done and we got to the car just in time to hear last three outs!!! Great going JB!!! I’m going to the game on Thursday. Don’t know where I’ll be sitting though. I’ll be with my mom, who is one of two that have the same season seats; they share. There are 2 additional seats. I think my mom will get her usual seats on Wednesday, and the other guy will get the “other” 2 seats, but on Thursday, I think that’s reversed. But at least I’ll be there!!!

I was only three years old in 1951 so I only know what happened from the accounts and old films. However, I still get depressed whenever that situation is brought up and especially when I see the clip the the home run. The lasting image is Branca with his head down.
I do remember 1962 and how depressed I was at the Dodgers losing that playoff game, especially taking a lead into the ninth inning at home. The season had been really exciting with Maury Wills stealing bases and the tight race with the Giants. Dodger Stadium opened that season. I think Sandy Koufax had 13 wins by the first half but was lost for the season with a strange injury when he lost feeling in the middle finger of his left hand. The worst thing was not only did the Dodgers lose a playoff game that deprived them of going to the World Series, they lost to the hated Giants. The good news is the Giants lost that series.

lbirken, I was 9 years old in ’62. And from ’62 through ’67 I learned what it was really going to be like to be a Dodger fan. They’ll break your heart and take you to the peaks and then toss you down again. But it’s ne-ver bor-ing! LOL!!!

Eric, you know it. Never boring, often downright disturbingly frustrating and very often heart stopping. There is no logic to why we go through all this aggravation and sometimes I do envy just a little those folks who are not crazy enough to be sucked into the life of a sports fan. Of course, that feeling goes away quickly.
Nelly, then you know that in every decade since the 1940’s through the 1980’s the Dodgers appeared in the World Series multiple times in each of those decades. They did not win most of those series but they were there. They missed out on appearing in a few more by losing playoffs. For years they teased Brooklyn fans, finally winning in 1955 and I can only imagine how Dodger fans felt when that happened. The Dodgers have had more success in Los Angeles. Think about it; Brooklyn fans waited years to finally win a championship while L.A. fans waited one year! We expect the Dodgers to compete for a championship every year. Beating the Giants? That’s nice but not enough for Dodger fans.

Emma, it’s “to be determined” because the DET-MIN game still has to be played, at which point the Yankees have until an hour after the completion of the game to choose whether they want the 7 day series, or the 8 day series.
If the Yanks choose the 8 game series, our game 2 will be at 3:07. If they choose the 7 game series, our game 2 will be at 6:37.

crzblue2, silly you for thinking games are played for the convenience of the ticket buying fans actually attending games. They are played for the convenience of the broadcasters and the eastern time zone. No matter what day or time a game is played, a lot of people are going to be inconvenienced. Obviously, the games are played to attract the most viewers so the networks can charge the highest advertising prices. There is no concern for the late afternoon traffic or crazy shadows for games played in the west at 5:00 PM nor the silliness of east coast games ending well after midnight local time. Such is the price we pay for all the games to be on TV.

I can remember how disappointing it was to come up short, although I am foggy on the details, too many concussions perhaps. I do remember loving those guys year after year and the excitement that came with each opportunity. This is baseball, where obtaining the ring is a privilege, not something you can achieve at the drop of a hat. To be in the position to get there is a battle in itself, with all the personnel changes from year to year, the changes within the season, from trades to injuries, to the chemistry of playing well as a team. These youngsters that lace em up this year have been a outright pleasure to watch at least for me…..Win or lose I will respect them for what they gave me in the way of enjoyment.
I will however suffer the good with the bad right there with them, as I have have in the past…..I will go through my rituals, and pay homage to my superstitions along the way….I will never give up hope, believing that this year belongs to me and my bums, and that the momentum and magic will align with the willpower and ability to win the ball game. I have faith in them as a team as a group that they will achieve their goals. Every rally starts with a positive action on your side of the game, and that breeds more positive action, it can be downright contagious….even with two outs in the deciding game of a big series, against any team, under any circumstance…….never give up hope and never under estimate your power to overcome odds.

Although, again going to the memory banks, I remember watching games on TV in the gym and having to devise all sorts of ways to catch the games on the sly during school – such as hiding transistor radios in jackets on hot days with the earpiece running inside the sleeve.
Those were the days……
I enjoyed watched games played in the good ol’ sunshine, Dodgereric. Of course, that was before the executives decided almost every game should be played at night. That’s great for the kids who have to go to school the next day. We are supposed to be getting the children interested in our beloved past-time. Instead, they hardly ever get to see a game.
eric- I used the jacket and radio combo myself. For a while these white, canvas surplus parkas were the fad. They were for the ski troops and were just one layer of canvas. Not to hot to wear come World Series time. Maybe you remember them. They were popular with the surf kids.
lbirken ~ my point about day games is that baseball people wonder why kids aren’t interested in playing baseball anymore. Unless you live close to a stadium and have the luxury of going to a game in person, the only way kids can see the games is on TV. I know they play almost all of the games at night and I don’t object to it…but, it is wonderful to sit in the sunshine for a day game. And, you make my point, ibirken, they just cannot stay up that late.

dodgereric ~ I just went on Dodgers.com and looked for a single seat. I guess I got lucky.
Dodgereric – It’s not any different today with phones and computers, is it? The technology is just better, and you don’t have to worry about anybody hearing because you can just turn the sound off if you need to. We can, if we choose to, watch the game from anywhere and now……..at anytime with archived games and such. I watched the entire game late last night since I couldn’t be there at home to watch it in the afternoon. I had to see them come off the field one by one. It’s one of those things Dodger fans have to see.
Eric, I remember those days as well although I never used the jacket. I would go home for lunch just to see one inning of a game. I still remember out teacher letting us watch the Dodgers-White Sox series game in 1959 on TV in the classroom.
I can understand why some people prefer day games but I reject the argument about playing them for the kids. As far as I am concerned, sportswriters (and there aren’t that many left anymore who actually write for a newspaper) liked to make that argument when in fact they just did not like the tight deadlines of the night games. Most kids are in school when a lot of playoff and series games are played so they wouldn’t see them anyway. I like the games being played at night since most of the games during the regular season are played at night. I think playing weekend games during the day might be o.k. but these days baseball has to compete with college and pro football.
Look at it this way. Most of us in the west don’t see the beginnings of the games but we see the end. My son, who lives in North Carolina, misses the ends of many games as he just cannot stay up that late.
This time warp thing is annoying. I have forced myself to scroll up just to make sure I havn’t missed anything. What a bother.
I still see a lot of kids and young adults at Dodger games but the conventional wisdom says kids prefer the “cooler” sports of basketball and football. Those sports are faster and more glamorous and have done a much better job marketing their product. College basketball and football are big time but college baseball isn’t. I drive by some little league fields in my area and there are still kids playing but then agian I don’t live in the inner city where kids can play pick up basketball games so much easier than baseball. I don’t think it has much to do with when the games are played. They play most football games on weekends and most basketball games are played at night.

Very nice article Nellyjune. I guess it will in tomorrow’s paper. Byron is a very nice man. I met him back in May. It was the day after I dressed like the 70’s with the big afro wig. I was going by and he said “where is your wig?” I did not understand at first then it dawn on me he was talking about the 70’s night. I started talking to him then I saw his name tag. My friends and I talked too him about how we got three speeding tickets in Arizona. Then we told him that we had gone to the premiere of the Bluetopia movie and that Maggie and Andre were there. He said he had stayed home taking care of the baby. He is always very nice everytime we see him. My friend and I ran into him also at Wrigley Field. We were at our seats when he was coming back up from the field level. The last time I saw him he introduced to his wife.

I always read the L.A Times obituaries in the California section. When last month I read that Bill Werber the oldest living former MLB player and a teammate of Babe Ruth had died at age 100 I was asking myself “who is now the oldest living former MLB player?” Well, after much research I found out the answer is Tony Malinosky. He is 99, born October 5, 1909 and he briefly played with the Dodgers! Tony played in only one season, 1937, in 34 games total. He lived in Whittier, CA and attended Whittier college in the 30’s.

BTW, Bill Werber had the distinction of being the first player to bat in the first televised major league game, leading off for the Reds in a game against the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field on Aug 26, 1939. Occasionally he would write letters to Bud Selig telling him that he did not think women should sing the national anthem, that games today take too long and that he was disgusted with the long hair on modern players. Wonder what he thought about the steriod scandals.

3 weeks ago I was switching channels when I heard as part of highlights of a show in Spanish TV station “Univision” that they were going to cover the oldest living professional player that played in the Negro League. Toward the end of the show they showed Emilio Navarro. He is 103, born September 26, 1905 in Puerto Rico. He still looks healthy doing his morning exercises. He reminded me of Buck O’Neill, so upbeat, happy, friendly and with a wonderful look on life. his highlight for him was throwing out the first ball at Yankee Stadium last year. Pudge Rodriguez caught him. The world needs more people like Buck O’Neill & Emilio Navarro.

It does seem like the Yankees have the time off would have the upperhand, but knowing how the Dodgers play after a day off, maybe the Twins aren’t in such a bad situation. I guess pitching would be the issue.

Wee bit surprised Padilla got the nod over Garland, just based on Garland’s successful World Series experience. But pitching is a strange science, so I’ll trust Joe on this one. But I have NO CLUE what Joe will do with the roster tomorrow. The bubble people appear to be Weaver, Troncoso, Belisario, Mota, Elbert, Thome and Mientkiewicz from which to pick only four. Doesn’t seem to be enough seats for everyone. I figure at least two of those picks will be pitchers, if not three.
I think I read somewhere that, Joe stated….. Weaver was on the division roster??? Maybe it was during the press conference???
Thanks, Dodger4life…guess that wraps up the suspense. Mota, Elbert and Mientkiewicz have to pick up their toys and go home….. I gotta say though, Belisario and Troncoso look like tired pitchers to me. At this late date, I don’t have a lot of confidence in the two of them to get Cardinals out.
The 25-man roster is not required to be submitted until Wednesday morning, but it appears virtually set. Torre notified Jeff Weaver that he would be active as a situational right-hander to give St. Louis hitters a different look, with Garland serving as long reliever.

That guy does that at every game. Ken Levine from Dodger Talk interviewed him Sunday. He is an actor. He was in a commercial for Magic Mountain. He shares season tix. I ran into him in the parking lot. He said on Dodger Talk that two fans showed him that they made t-shirts with his immage. He said that was unreal.

The 33-year-old left-hander proved to be the most consistent starter for the repeat NL West champions, although he quickly rejects the label of staff ace.

“I almost despise that word,” Wolf said Tuesday. “A guy like Chris Carpenter(notes), you could consider him an ace. He’s done it year in, year out. He’s the guy who is almost a perennial top-five Cy Young voting guy.”
Carpenter will start for the NL Central champion St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1 Wednesday night against Wolf. The 2005 Cy Young winner is a strong contender again this season, boasting a 17-4 record and a NL-best 2.24 ERA.
Wolf describes himself in less lofty terms.
“I’ve kept the team in the game,” he said. “With this staff, we could have an ace on any given day. That’s why I don’t like to use that term. It’s just try to pitch as well as you can, that’s the key.”
Wolf proved durable this season, setting career highs with 34 starts and 214 1-3 innings just two years after lasting half a season for the Dodgers because of injury.
He ended the regular season strongly, going 6-1 in his final nine starts with a 2.51 ERA. Overall, he was 11-7 with a 3.23 ERA that was second on the staff to Clayton Kershaw’s(notes) 2.79.
Kershaw will start Game 2 on Thursday, while Adam Wainwright(notes) goes for the Cardinals.
The Dodgers open the series with two pitchers who lack playoff experience, between Wolf and Kershaw, a 21-year-old left-hander. Manager Joe Torre went with the two lefties because the Cardinals batted .234 against southpaws compared to .274 against right-handers.
“Wolf’s excited. You’ll see him snatch the ball back from Russell Martin(notes), and that’s why he is who he is,” Torre said.
“Kershaw, we’ve spent the better part of two years trying to protect him and insulate him from all this exposure because he’s just a kid. Then you hand him the ball (last) Saturday and say, `Here, kid,’ and he comes back with a division title. He’s pretty well not anybody to be concerned about.”
Wolf spent eight seasons with Philadelphia, enduring his share of runner-up finishes and playoff misses. Then he missed the Dodgers’ playoff run last season, which ended in the NLCS against the Phillies.
“You obviously start feeling like there’s some kind of a jinx even though I’m not a big believer in that, but luckily that went away,” he said.
Wolf couldn’t have predicted his success in the offseason, when he thought he would be returning to the Houston Astros. That didn’t work out and the Dodgers stepped in to sign him for a second stint about a week before spring training began.
“I was happy to have that opportunity to come to LA again, and I felt that I owed them something,” said Wolf, who grew up in the San Fernando Valley. “I felt I had some unfinished business.”
He got off to a rocky beginning with a 5-6 record, a 3.55 ERA and 13 no-decisions in his first 24 starts. Coincidentally, his luck seemed to turn around the All-Star break when he switched his jersey from No. 21 to 43, and won that day.
“I always wanted No. 43. It was the number I had in Philly for a long time,” Wolf said.
Carpenter had his own share of problems, missing nearly all the previous two seasons to injuries. He was 2-0 with 1.20 ERA against the Dodgers this season.
“He has a bunch of weapons, so he can pitch to all areas,” manager Tony La Russa said. “He competes like a maniac, he’s a complete guy.”
Carpenter takes no comfort in the fact that Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez(notes) comes into the playoffs having batted .218 with four home runs and 14 RBIs in his last 25 games.
“If you ever take Manny Ramirez for granted, you’re crazy, no matter what he’s swinging,” Carpenter said. “I’m not concerned if Manny is 0 for 50. He can hit. You go out and you continue to execute your game plan, that’s it.”
Ramirez tailed off after returning from a 50-game suspension for violating baseball’s drug policy. He was hitting .348 with six homers and 20 RBIs before sitting out. He returned to hit .269 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs in 77 games
Ramirez is baseball’s all-time postseason home run leader with 28. His 74 RBIs are second only to former New York Yankees star Bernie Williams’(notes) 80.
“He tries to get too big and really it affects his balance,” Torre said. “He just has to think more in terms of smaller, like the line drive instead of long way. Usually the long ball will come when you sort of get yourself back in rhythm.”
Torre announced his starting lineup for Game 1, with Ramirez hitting in the cleanup spot. He chose infielder Ronnie Belliard(notes) (hitting .351 since coming from Washington) over All-Star Orlando Hudson(notes) (.284).
“He doesn’t have as wide a range as Hudson does, but I think offensively he’s maybe a little fresher right now,” Torre said. “We asked O-Dog to do a lot of stuff early in the year. We’ll go day-to-day right now.”
La Russa declined to identify his starters, saying the biggest issue remained who will play center field against the left-handed Wolf.
Right-hander Joel Pineiro(notes) will start Game 3 in St. Louis, while the Dodgers will go with righty Vicente Padilla(notes). Torre said All-Star right-hander Chad Billingsley(notes) would start Game 4 if necessary.
“I was just a little more comfortable with where Padilla is now,” Torre said. “I know Billingsley is getting there, otherwise he wouldn’t even be considered for No. 4 if I didn’t think I was more comfortable watching him.”
Billingsley threw 85 pitches in a simulated game Monday at the Dodgers’ spring training complex in Arizona. A year ago, he went into the division series as the Game 2 starter and beat the Chicago Cubs. But he was mostly ineffective after the break.
“Everything felt good mechanically,” he said about the simulated game. “I’m feeling a lot better out on the mound. That’s what you want to see.”
