New thread…

Wow…you take one day off and look what happens!

Actually, it wasn’t so much a day off as it was a departmental team building event, as we all went down to the game yesterday in San Diego. Certainly not a fun game to watch, so we’ll put that behind us. This morning I was at a news conference to announce the launch of the new billboards that the Boy Scouts are putting out around Los Angeles. It’s a very cool campaign so those of you in Los Angeles, be on the lookout for these.

14x48Bull_RM.jpgAs for what’s written on the comments of the blog…I do keep track of the overall themes and pass them along to the powers-that-be when they’re constructive. There’s obviously a huge difference between constructive feedback and some of the other things we see on here every day and I know that you are all smart enough to recognize the difference.

For those not in the greater Michigan area, I hope you’ll get to TIVO the Vin Scully/John Wooden event at the Nokia Theatre if you’re not already planning to go. If you are, I’ll hopefully see you there, but it’s going to be an extremely special once-in-a-lifetime event.

Here’s tonight’s lineup in Detroit…

Pierre, CF

Young, LF

Ethier, RF

Kent, 2B

Martin, C

Loney, 1B

LaRoche, 3B

Sweeney, DH

Berroa, SS

Lowe, P

sweeney as DH??? we may make fun of joe torre but after seeing this you have to understand why… this guys sucks… we stand no chance tonight against detroit…

  2. jhallwally

DodgerBoy, thanks for your reply. I am going to be with my father Sunday. Clayshaw will be there another day. He would understand however. Dads are like that. Thanks again.

  3. enchantedbeaver

    Just for that…

New this fall from NedCo© Television (cable chanel 666):

Looks like the win harvest is gonna be pretty lean this season… He’s a fish out of water. She’s a New York socialite. Watch all the gaffs and pratfalls as Ned Colletti stars as Eddie Albert as Oliver, and Joe Torre stars at Eva Gabor as Lisa in LEAN ACRES. Watch hilariously as Ned has no idea how to farm, and Joe has no concept of, well anything. Co-starring Andruw Jones as Arnold Ziffel.

Airs Monday nights at 7:00 and rerunning Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; Sundays at 1:00.

  4. jhallwally

New from NedCo©, Inside the Dodgers. Starring Joey as Joe Torre. PA as Ned. Don’t miss one power packed post as these two morons try to bait the other bloggers and justify their pathetic existence. Coming soon in vivid schitzophrenia vision.

  5. dodgereric

You’re right, jhall. Dads are like that. I’m glad you’re spending time with your dad tomorrow.

A couple years ago, I was complaining to a friend that I had to take my mom to a “barbershop quartet” concert about 80 miles away with her sister (my aunt). They used to sing a lot together and are interested in such things but can’t drive themselves that far anymore. My friend said, “I wish I could.”

I sat there like an idiot for a couple of seconds trying to figure out why he would want to take my mom and aunt to a barbershop quartet concert. Then I remembered that his mother had passed away. My complaining stopped as my attitude changed immediately. I went and had a good time, but not as good a time as they had.

My dad passed away almost 4 years ago.

Go see your dads tomorrow, everyone. Or call them if it’s far away. You won’t regret it. 🙂

  6. oldbrooklynfan

I see Mr. DeWitt has the night off, he can sit back relax and enjoy the game. He deserves it.
I know there are a lot of suggestions being posted on his blog.
I for one think everything is fine with the exception of the Dodger offense. We got to start scoring runs.
Not going anywhere until that happens.
    LET’S GO YA BUMS!!!!!!!

  7. jhallwally

    HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM??????

  8. dodgrdad14

I wonder which one Josh is talking about? 🙂
Obviously the powers that be don’t care what we say because Slappy is still leading off. I guess i just goes to show as long as people 4 million strong keep showing up at the games nothing is going to change.
We can talk all we want till were blue in the face, but until it hurts Franks bottom line nothing will change.
    THAT IS SAD!!!!!

  9. jhallwally

There’s only two theme’s. Ned’s incompetence and Joe’s sycophance. I wonder what they consider constructive. I think our songs are constructive.

  10. dodgereric

Since rain looks likely, let’s have a trivia question:

Q: What major league baseball team will post a lineup with 3 consecutive guaranteed outs even in an American League ballpark where you play with a DH?

    A: Scroll up.

  11. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

i will be at the scully / wooden event tonight, and i’m SO excited. i’m one of the lucky people who have already been able to talk to both of those legends, but i couldn’t resist the chance to hear them at an event like this. i will tivo it also. i think it is going to be one of the most memorable things in my lifetime. it could be the last chance to hear them both speak in public like this. hope some of the rest of you are going as well!

  12. dodgrdad14

    Eric,
I think that is one of those culturally biased questions and I refuse to answer it as it might offend the powers that be!! 🙂
    Was that sarcastic enough??? LOL

  13. jhallwally

I think they should paint the seats in pastels. Now that’s constructive. Fire Ned. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!

  14. messagebear@msn.com

Josh is just another sad mouthpiece for the organization. He’s with PR, probably the only effective department within the headquarters. You certainly can’t say that about the medical staff, nor the field management, so what else is left except PR.

  15. stolenmonk

While the start is delayed by rain, maybe Joe Torre will realize he should try putting in a DH that can, well, hit. Especially with Kemp out of the lineup. Why is Sweeney still on the team?

  16. dodgrdad14

Sweeney is on the team because JOJO and NERD just love them washed up VETS (PVL’S). But ya Patriot he should be at his house watching baseball now, He was good at one point but that point is long gone.

  17. scurtis1999

    I LOVE LA!!

Lets get this game going. Looks like 445, 545, 645, 745 start time for us in different time zones.

  18. dodgrdad14

    jhall,
They are going to paint the seats, and they are going to spend another 500 million on the stadium…..DOHHHHH Frank forgot to pay for a decent team!!!

  19. crzblue2

    Yey! New thread!

Looking forward to the Vin Scully event tonight! I left my car at the Burbank station on purpose. I’ll take the train, pickup my car at Burbank, change my clothes. I think I’ll leave my car at Union Station and take the Red/Blue line to the Nokia center. That is what I do when I go to the Staple Center. Blue line leaves you across the street.
    .
Good luck D.Lowe. Keep it lowe, lowe, lowe lowe.

  20. dodgereric

Well, come on ya’ll. In Josh’s defense, some of our suggestions are physically impossible to accomplish.

And you know what I mean.

  21. jungar@wsgcorp.com

I got kicked in the balls so hard watching the lakers, the Sweeney at DH thing dosen’t even faze me. I really can’t be mad anymore. He feels JP is important at the top and Kent is imoprtant at clean up. We can’t win. So why be mad. I give up. You win Joe and Ned. I give up.

  22. jungar@wsgcorp.com

Once Furcal, Schmidt and Nomar and Jones come back we might have a chance.

That’s what they believe and now I believe it to. If they say it enough, it comes true. It’s a hell of an excuse you gotta admit.

  23. porklinks

messagebear – I’ve actually met Josh Rawitch and he is OK in my book. Besides, the fact that he actually does read (or at least critically scan) the comments and hosts this blog at all should give him a lot of points with all of us.

  24. jungar@wsgcorp.com

Once the young kids learn how to hit like Kent, Sweeney and Pierre we will win.

In case JoJo and Ned don’t get it if/when they read our posts, we’re not laughing WITH you, we’re laughing AT you.

  26. dodgrdad14

Old Fogey I do believe Josh is a good guy, It’s his bosses that I don’t trust.
Better watch out I think Jungar has finally had enough and is going off the deep end…….

  27. jhallwally

What they (the powers that be) consider constructive and what we think is constructive are miles apart apparantly.

  28. crzblue2

    Sara,
I am also excited about the event tonight! I asked my brother to tivo the event as well as the game. I can’t watch any of the games with Detroit live as I will be at the Pasadena site volunteering for the Blood drive and Sunday my flight leaves at 7.Am. out of LAX to Boston, then my co-worker and I drive to N.H. Did you all see Torre & Scioscia advertising the blood drive? Is a friendly contest between the Dodger Booster club and the Angels Booster club who gets the most volunteers but everyone wins!

  29. dodgrdad14

come on now Jhall we can’t use common sense!! That would be using our brains and that is just not constructive!! 🙂

DeWitt has been needing a day off – many of us thought he, not Loney, should have rested when LaRoche debuted on Tuesday in SD. Given that they chose to rest him today and that Matt Kemp is still suspended, your DH choices are then Sweeney, Maza, and Ardoin. At that point, I choose Sweeney too.

  32. spanner@aol.com

With Kemp suspended and DeWitt aparently needing a rest the only other available players who could DH are Maza and Ardoin… I think Sweeney is a better choice for DH than either of those guys.

  33. enchantedbeaver

What are the odds of lightning striking our CFer? I mean when he’s out in the field – nothing much ever hits his bat.

  34. dodgrdad14

Well everyone it is almost 5 and I want to go home for the weekend, For all you going to the Vin & Wooden even tonight….. YOU SUC_K!!! 🙂 just kidding enjoy it I am jealous, for everyone else lets pray that the powers that be will pull their you know what out of their you know whats!! Have a good one

  35. jhallwally

It’s not like we are the only one’s saying it. The general concensus in baseball (media, blogs, other clubs, etc…) and around the country is that Ned is in over his head and has bungled the job royally. Firing him would be very constructive. Hope you are conveying that to Ned, Josh. Just because it is not what you want to hear, doesn’t make it any less constructive.

  36. kpookiemon

westernmost, you said earlier these DH choices are the price we pay for Kemp’s suspension. I would say these choices are the price we pay for Ned’s visionary bench.

  37. kpookiemon

    reminds me of Boy Geaorge,

“Do you realy want to hurt me,
Do you really want to play Pierre?”

  38. spanner@aol.com

Wel if we didnt have so many injuries the bench would be better than in it and those guys would still be in Vegas. Fortunately it looks like Nomar will be back soon… he could turn out to be a good pinch hitter for us in the second half.

  39. jhallwally

Josh, I do feel for you. It has to be very hard to work under/with someone who is overtly incompetent and have to skirt that issue all the time. Condolences!!

  40. enchantedbeaver

Doesn’t Joe have a strategy for the starters/relievers for rainy day ballgames? I mean it worked so well with Billingsley.

  41. boblee14@yahoo.com

If this game is rained out tonight, will it be played tomorrow as a doubleheader? Sat’s regular game is a regional nationally televised game on fox and will not be local in St. louis area or MLB.TV. Will that mean neither game will be on MLB.TV. That would S***………..

  42. porklinks

spanner – good point. W/out all the injuries: LaRoche (probably) wins the 3B job (he was raking), Nomar and Abreu are the IF bench, Hu starts the season in AAA, Maza stays in AAA and Berroa is never acquired. Of course, we wouldn’t have had the Blake DeWitt experience either.

  43. leekfink

First–I protest interleague paly and we should all ignore it, and certainly never pay for it.
    .
Enchanted, I do think you, and a lot of us, were slightly dissed, but I assume that Josh pays attention even to the sentiment, if not the specifics. Hopefully, he follows even when we’re just plain peeved.
    .
I heard Bowa today on the pre-game (I was looking for footage from the Loney/Jones/Macy’s event), and he said that the veterans (Nomar, Jones, Furcal, and Kent) know how to work the count and the kids don’t. Furcal does. Jones always seems to have three pitches per at-bat, but how could he say this with a straight-face? Nomar and Kent are notorious first pitch swingers?
    .
And the idea of Sweeney DH’ing remains silly. The idea that we’re boxed in because of Kemp’s two-game suspension is crazy. I agree that DeWitt needs a rest, but he can’t wait one day for the rest?

  44. porklinks

And check out this quote from that article, about when he was the Padres manager. Boy, he must really hate it here:
    .
I had a young team and I was a young manager and we didn’t win. I had the sense that they were trying to develop young players and win at the same time. I told them, “You can’t have both, with as many young players as we had.” And so, a couple weeks later, they let me go.

  45. porklinks

The Tigers DH is hitting .138 .194 .241.
    Sweeney Todd: .125 .218 .167.
    .
Boy, I’m sure glad the pitchers don’t get to hit since you see such an improvement. (NL pitchers this season: .143 .183 .180)

  46. enchantedbeaver

Actually fogey, I don’t see that Bowa quote as bad. Sounds more to me like he understood winning and developing are two separate things and you can have one or the other. SD wanted both evidently.

I’d trust Bowa a heck of a lot more with this team than JoJo.

  47. porklinks

enchanted – don’t you think that Frank and Ned want both? Bowa thinks it can’t be done. Sounds like management isn’t too aligned top-to-bottom. (SD didn’t have as many vets though, LA is supposed to be starting Jones, Furcal and Kent.)

  48. dodgereric

“Bowa today …..said that the veterans (Nomar, Jones, Furcal, and Kent) know how to work the count and the kids don’t. ”

First pitch hitting – LA Dodgers 2008:

    Player PAs Ave
    Young 4 1.000
    Ardoin 3 .667
    LaRoche 2 .500
    Loney 25 .480
    Kemp 30 .448
    Martin 29 .429
    Pierre 14 .429
    Furcal 14 .357
    DeWitt 12 .333
    Kent 39 .289
    Garciaparra 4 .250
    Ethier 23 .217
    Jones 14 .154
    Sweeney 8 .133
    Hu 16 .063
    Maza 4 .000
    Bennett 3 .000
    Tiffee 1 .000
    Berroa 0 .000

Hmmmm. It seems to be a little top-heavy with the kids hitting p-r-e-t-t-y d-a-r-n-e-d g-o-o-d by swinging at the first pitch. Perhaps this “working the count” thing may be a little overrated and perhaps everyone should just LEAVE THE KIDS THE HELL ALONE BECAUSE THEY ARE GOOD AT WHAT THEY DO.

    IMO.

  49. porklinks

And Nomar and Kent are annually amongst the leaders in LEAST pitches per plate appearance. More cliched nonsense that is not borne out by the facts.

  50. porklinks

Berroa stinks and I think LaRoche tagged Guillen. Umpires now taking lessons from NBA officials – calls to the home team.

  51. enchantedbeaver

Fogey – I think Frank and Ned would like to have both, and they may have even gotten it if things had gone according to plan and the vets contributed, but as it stands now all the onus is on the kids, and the support cast is a bunch of junk no other team wanted.

  52. enchantedbeaver

I will say though that if it had been Pierre that went down instead of Ferk, we’d be in first place now.

  53. spanner@aol.com

enchanted, you could say that about any of the people on the roster… Furcal was playing great… I know you hate him, but Pierre really is not the problem.. Injuries to key players and lack of depth is the problem. You take Pierre out of the lineup and replace him with young or repko or whatever stiff from the minors floats your boat and our position doesn’t improve and probably gets even worse.

  54. enchantedbeaver

Was that professional hitter and count worker Jeff Kent making out on the first pitch he saw?

  55. porklinks

    Er, Berroa’s tag.
    .
More bad news on the injury front. Check out these scary words:
    .
The Dodgers aren’t talking about surgery for Furcal, who is in his free agent season, but that often is the course of action when core strengthening exercises and injections don’t resolve bulging disk issues.
    .
Plus they will “go slow”(er) with Schmidt.
    .
    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080611&content_id=2893189&vkey=news_la&fext=.jsp&c_id=la&partnerId=rss_la

  56. scurtis1999

Damn Furcal. He is too young to have back problems. My back is killing me the last 2 months too but probably from lifting to hard at the gym without a belt.

Jason Schmidt is just a waste of space. I wish him well, but his career is finito!

  57. spanner@aol.com

They should stop going slow with schmidt… Run him out there and have him start for the 66ers some more… He can pitch with a little discomfort, if he blows his arm out again… then let him retire and we dont need to worry about him anymore…

  58. thunderbolt507

One of the kids (loney) triples.
Another one of the kids (laroche) walks.

Now the veteran comes up and strikes out! I guess we DO need these veterans to show the kids “how to play the game right”

  59. oldbrooklynfan

Seeing Leyland sure brings back memories of his days i the N.L
They were better days for us too.

  60. enchantedbeaver

And PVL Sweeney with another fine at bat.

I don’t even have so much objection to Pierre playing spanner as I do him batting lead-off, which obviously isn’t his fault. The onus of this season belongs to JoJo and Ned. One can’t pick the right personnel and the other can’t play them.

  61. porklinks

Leyland doesn’t buy into this PVL nonsense; he pitches around the rookie to get to Sweeney, and it works. 😉 Feh.

  62. spanner@aol.com

I’m inclined to agree about Sweeney. I was hoping that Nomar would come back and he could replace Sweeney on the bench… but maybe we cant wait.. How bout bringing up John Lindsey from Vegas and giving him a shot at the pinch hit duty?

  63. spanner@aol.com

western, I’m somewhat uneasy with Nomar at short… he’s gonna get hurt again.. he is really ideally suited to be a pinch hitter/DH right now… but he is a better option at short than Maza, Hu, Berroa, Chavez, or whoever else we have rotting on the farm.

  64. enchantedbeaver

When Nomore comes back, Maza I believe will be the sacraficial lamb. Sweeney hangs around at least until Jones comes back, and then I wouldn’t put it past them to option LaRoche instead.

  65. messagebear@msn.com

Denial – that’s what JoJo is in when it comes to the veterans. He can’t believe that guys like Sweeney, who were very good players in their time, can really get this bad when they age. He must think they’re like wine – only get better and wiser. Well, at some point even the best of them are done forever, and for Sweeney it is that time, so just get rid of the lousy worthless piece of crap.

  66. porklinks

spanner – I’m more than uneasy. I doubt Nomar has a whole lot of range left either. Nomar/Kent doesn’t strike me as strong up the middle defense.

  67. spanner@aol.com

What is it with the Dodgers and these bizare injuries that never heal? Schmidt, Nomar, Furcal, these guys get hurt and never heal.. and even Abreu seems like he’ll never play again because of a mystery groin injury… Perhaps we should fire the training staff?

  68. porklinks

You’re right joe pierre: 17 scoreless innings for the Dodgers. 21 innings where the only run was LaRoche’s blast.

  69. oldbrooklynfan

Thanks to LaRoche, what is it 1 run in the last 21 innings?
Wasn’t that where they were before the last bunch?

  70. porklinks

See, a Proven Veteran Leader hits the triple with the runner on and hits the fly out with the bases empty. Duh. 😉

  71. messagebear@msn.com

Just a purely constructive suggestion – have we considered Kuo as a DH? I’d stack him up against Sweeney any time.

  72. enchantedbeaver

What’s Berroa bringing to the table more than Hu did? Plus his defense stinks. Ned sure can pick ’em.

  73. oldbrooklynfan

They hey hey are tryiiing to hu scoreoooor
    But tryyyy as they may.
They keep laying those goose eggs
    MORE & MORE

  74. boblee14@yahoo.com

Yeah, we can do that to…. NOT

    .
I knew was a matter of time till one flew out and not off our bats

  75. porklinks

Steve Lyons blames Sweeney’s 6-50 on scattered ABs coming off the bench cold. That is hilarious analysis! Hello! If you can’t hit getting scattered ABs coming off the bench cold, SHOULD YOU BE A PINCH-HITTING SPECIALIST?
    .
    Gimme a D, D!
    Gimme an F, F!
    Gimme an A, A!
    What’s that spell? Mark Sweeney!
    What’s that spell? Mark Sweeney!
    What’s that smell? Mark Sweeney!

  76. enchantedbeaver

I prefer blaming it on the fact he sucks.

However, he wouldn’t be 6 for 50 if Joe doesn’t keep sending him up there. Dead Horse – Sweeney. Fault – JoJo.

  77. porklinks

Sweeney has to go 19 for his next 50 (.380) to be a .250 hitter. I have a bad feeling we’re going to find out this season whether or not he can do it.

  78. boblee14@yahoo.com

This game S****. We can’t hit. We can’t field. We can’t pitch.

What the hell are we doing here????????????

  79. enchantedbeaver

JoJo’s still living the dream that his vets here are the same caliber as his vets in NY. I don’t exactly see a correlation between Berroa and Jeter nor Kent and ARod nor Sweeney and a pile of crap (except the crap is hotter.)

  80. boblee14@yahoo.com

Crap. I’m sick of this. We can’t hit with runners on base. What’s the odds we may not win any games against the American League this trip.

  81. boblee14@yahoo.com

Hey scurtis, I may have to start rooting for the Cubs. I hate the Cardinals, just because both my sons are Cards fans.

  82. porklinks

leekfink (I think) correctly (IMHO) pointed out the other day what a lousy idea it is to try and steal third with two outs. Yet here is JP doing it again! He succeeded, but why take the 20% or more risk of making the third out when you are already in scoring position? And when there is a (proven, veteran) RBI man at the plate?
    .
And will Kent give him an earful, like he would if Matt Kemp did it? No.

  83. scurtis1999

BobLee, You would be rooting for a loser that will choke and break your heart! lol

I will be rooting for football season!

  84. enchantedbeaver

I long for the Grady days when the kids could play carefree and tell PVLs where to stick it.

As they say, you can’t fire the whole team, but Frank could fire those responsible – and we know who they are.

  85. porklinks

    20 straight scoreless innings.
    .
    The entire major league:
    Men on: .267 .346 .415
    No one on: .255 .319 .403
    .
    Dodgers 2008:
    Men on: .255 .335 .349
    No one on: .268 .325 .403

  86. porklinks

scurtis – Cy Wolf, Cy “I didn’t have good stuff” Peavy, Cy Gallarraga…. Tomorrow a 27-year old AAA pitcher that doesn’t strike people out but has good control makes his major-league debut. He’ll be Cy Bonine.

  87. oldbrooklynfan

The Tiger announcers are saying Galarraga is in charge tonight.
It sure getting tiresome hearing that every night about the Dodger’s opposing pitcher.
    Isn’t it?

  88. boblee14@yahoo.com

Yeah , I’m ready for the Cowboy season. Cowboys to the Super Bowl this year.

The Dodgers aren’t going any where.

  89. porklinks

Torre apparently saving DeWitt to hit for LaRoche (should they get that far – not likely) instead of using him to hit for Berroa now.

  90. messagebear@msn.com

Can it be that Berroa will hit even lower than Hu?
It might be time to put DeJesus to the test – can he be any worse than Berroa?

  91. porklinks

In other words, what was the point of letting Berroa hit there? Not like you need to save hitters for the pitcher’s spot.

  92. messagebear@msn.com

I think if I were Lowe, I would plead with Ned to PULEEZE trade me before the deadline to somebody else. Or maybe I’d have my mama call Ned and plead with him (seems to work for Pierre). And I think that Ned should accommodate him, and maybe Penny too, because we’re not going anywhere but down in the standings. Might get some decent prospects, and Ned could even pick out his favorite PVL in the bargain.

  93. porklinks

DY will double, consecutive ground outs by Ethier and Kent will score him. Martin flies to the wall.

  94. boblee14@yahoo.com

This is unbelievable. Hey Torre, what you’re doing isn’t working.
How about letting all the kids play. Sit Kent, Sweeney, Pierre .

Hey, We need a knock down, drag out to get this team fired up. Nothing else seems to work.,

    That’s enough, Good night nelly

  95. magicofthesoul13@aol.com

wow. when is this season going to end. we should trede kent penny and lowe. let all the kids play to contend next year.

  96. porklinks

Which is likely to be better?
    1. the players/prospects Ned gets by trading Lowe at/near the deadline
    2. the prospects Logan White drafts with the two picks LA gets when Lowe leaves as a type-A free agent

  97. scurtis1999

Im getting tired of the vets and kids, we just need a better mix of players. A couple vets and kids go and a new crop come in. This team will never win crap.

When do we play the tough NL West again? lol

  98. porklinks

23 consecutive scoreless innings. What an awful game, other than Lowe’s quality start and Loney’s triple. Feh.

  99. oldbrooklynfan

WHEN WILL THEY EVER SCORE? WHEN WILL THEY EVER SCORE? L0000000000000000000000NG TIME WAITING.

  100. enchantedbeaver

I’d say Logan White fogey, but I can see Lowe and Bareass demanding a trade at the deadline.

  101. dodge1612

on the brite side when ordonez hit a homerun I got that as a state on my fantasy league… not the itd one… oh and new strategy for fantasy sports, pick up the pitchers playing against the dodgers, your gonna get wins…

  102. seeskybout2rain@comcast.net

Pierre’s stealing of 3rd with 2 outs is a sign of desperation. We have no proven rbi threats right now. Pray for a wild pitch or passed ball.

  103. enchantedbeaver

Thing is, the kids weren’t this bad when they were raw rookies, and they weren’t this bad last year. The only thing that’s changed is the manager.

FIRE JOJO NOW FRANK HE’S EFFED UP THE KIDS (and have him take Ned with him.)

  104. porklinks

As I said earlier, Jeff Kent would be furious and raving about kids not knowing how to play the game if Matt Kemp stole third with two out and Kent up. He’ll say nothing about Pierre doing it for the second time recently.

  105. oldbrooklynfan

Why is everybody blaming Torre and the vets.
It’s everybody’s fault with the exception of the pitchers and the defense is great
It’s the offense that is killing this team.
They’re are all doing poorly at the plate with no exceptions.
    THE WHOLE TEAM.

  106. porklinks

James Loney is .360 / .429 / .460 over the last four series (back to and including in NY), went 1-3 with a triple today and 2-4 with a double yesterday, but, yeah, I hear you joe pierre, it is a team-wide struggle at the plate.

  107. junkyardjamie

From previous thread – ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS STUFF FROM ALL WHO WROTE STORIES AND SONGS!!! Also, thank you for the repeats of some of the great ones from the past. I was wondering why the number was going up so fast.
    .
    From today:
    I won’t even mention the game – I see I didn’t miss much – everyone had a bad day 😦
    .
Is it me or did Josh give us a spanking and then send us to our rooms for bad behavior? Does he realize that this is healthy to get our your frustrations out through songs and stories, and in jungar’s case repeating the same thing over and over and over again hoping that Torre’s and Ned’s views penetrate through our heads. (very funny by the way!!!) And yes, I am for a pastel blue stadium seats – it would go nicely with all the Dodger blue in the stadium.
    .
westernmost – good picture, and no, I will stick with Andre, Russell, James, Blake and Matt
    .
PierreEW – I’m not sure what happened earlier in the thread, but I guess I have to go back and read what you did because I saw you had moved over to the dark side. Who will be left to guide us to a more positive perspective?
    .
We haven’t heard from ndeschnes in days – not good! 😦

  108. juniorvarsity

    you know whats funny…

ever since kofax retired after the 66 season, the dodgers over the past(after this year) 42 years will have won only 2 world championships and only 5 national league pennants. after winning 11 national league pennants and 4 world series over a span of 26 years…minus three years because of WWII, when a bunch of our best players were in war. so that 23 year span really made the dodgers…THE DODGERS

  109. junkyardjamie

Josh, truthfully, I couldn’t do your job – it’s got to be one of the hardest in this organization, and I give you major credit for putting up with us. However, even though we get crazy sometimes (some more than others), most of it is in good fun and it really is just a way to release some frustration. Also, eventhough some of us are having fun with our situation it is with the intent of helping, me anyway, us understand what is obvious – our veterans are letting us down, but the kids are always getting the blame in the media. That is a criticizm that needs to be addressed. We don’t mind that the media is pointing out the kids’ short-comings. We all know they do because they are the focus of all media attention. However there needs to be fairness in pointing out our veteran’s shortcomings as well.
    .
I have the fun pleasure of living in a household with giants fans, and as much as it hurts to say this, their veterans are being true veterans. They are leading by example, both on and off the field. Just tonight, Omar Viscal stole home. With the exception of Pierre (and I am not a Pierre fan), I can’t see any of our current veterans doing something so gutsy or even been given the chance. Just to remind you Omar Viscal is 40 years old (10 years younger than Pierre).

  110. cpompe1

    Hi all…
No, I’m not going to comment about tonite’s game; it was atrocious and it left me numb.

I know there are a lot of you that would be interested but Logan White and De Jon Watson will be having a LIVE web chat Tuesday, June 17 at 2:00 p.m. PT. Fans can log on and ask the trio about the recent 2008 First-Year Player Draft. The Dodgers veered from Assistant GM Logan White’s typical Draft strategy by taking more hitters than pitchers early and more college players than high school players overall during the recent Draft.

  111. cpompe1

    dnel,
nice words. I really wasn’t sure how to interpret Josh’s words. You are so eloquent with your words; I’m not. You must be a terrific teacher!

  112. oldbrooklynfan

    joey_rock27-Who needs to be reminded?

dnelson-You sweet,,eh ya gotta stay positive yourself.
Things will turn around soon, the potential is there.
    The production will come.
This is a young team and they know it’s not easy.
There will not be any giving up.
They’ll go out there EVERY DAY and keep on trying.

  113. junkyardjamie

there’s the Joe Pierre we know!! I will do my best to stay positive, too.
    .
cp – great question for Andre by the way – and I have read (I read alot about him) and I think he has some french in his background, but not sure about asian. Hopefully he will answer that question – it’s really kind of fun being able to be in contact with a player in some way. Also, the funny thing about writing is I feel it is the hardest subject for me to teach. Anytime I get a chance to take classes, workshops, etc., I always focus on writing. Thanks for the nice words, though 🙂

  114. junkyardjamie

The sprinklers just came on during the giants game – too funny!!!!
classic giants stuff happening – A’s were on the field. LOL!!

  115. jungar@wsgcorp.com

We should all write Jason Schmidt and ask him to help us in this bad economy, it’s not as if he really has earned. He can use it as a write off.

Say Jason, can we each have 7 percent of the salary you made the last two years. Thats not to much. Will leave you with plenty……

How many regulars here, roughly 25? SO, he made 26 million. 7% is 182,000 or more than our household. So, here is how it stacks up….

We all get 182k (4.5 million between 25 of us)
Jason gets the remaining 21.5 million for himself.

  116. junkyardjamie

Not a bad idea jungar – maybe we should add Andruw and Nomar into the mix (it can be pro-rated to reflect the time they have been on DL).
BTW – funny stuff today from you and the boys. I was reading it while watching my son’s baseball game. The comments had me in stitches 🙂

  117. junkyardjamie

Not to add fuel to the fire (well, yeah I am), but in the box score, the two batters that left runners in scoring position with two outs were Kent and Sweeney. However, I do realize many of our players did not have the best day, but those little things are starting to add up with our so-called veteran leaders.

  118. lny4loney

    Josh,
    .
I hope you recognize that the enduring theme of the vast majority of the posters on this blog is that we have a plethora of outstanding young talent with the potential to go deep into the playoffs and maybe all the way to a World Championship THIS YEAR, but that all that talent and potential is being wasted by an inexplicable and stubborn reliance on veteran players who are not getting the job done. This is particularly true among position players, not much of a problem among the pitchers.
    .
The evidence that these veterans are not getting the job done is not a matter of reasonable debate. Simply look at the statistics of the veterans (i.e. Pierre, Kent, Jones, Nomar, Sweeney) and compare them to the statistics of the kids (i.e. Martin, Loney, Kemp, Ethier, DeWitt, Young).
    .
In the cases of Kent and Pierre, they have not been terrible per se, but have been spoon-fed with unjustified consistent places in the lineup. Kent’s overall performance has been okay, but certainly not good enough to rationally justify his continued spot in the 3- or 4-hole. Pierre has been a disaster as a leadoff hitter.
    .
On the other hand, Loney, Kemp, Martin, DeWitt, Ethier, and Young have all played well despite being shuffled in and out of and all over the lineup.
    .
Statistics lie sometimes. But when, as here, no reasonable interpretation of the statistics can justify the actions of management, there is no debate.
    .
Bottom line. We are all extremely frustrated watching this season go to waste because of — I’ll be nice — obvious mismanagement.
    .
Let me offer some specific suggestions that I believe represent the general thoughts of this community of posters as well as good ol’ common sense:
    .
    1) Bat somebody who has a good on-base-percentage and shows promise of continuing to have a good OBP in the leadoff spot. (Personally I would go with Russell Martin, but other good choices are available. Juan Pierre undeniably and statistically provably does not fit that profile.)
    .
    2) Send a reasonably consistent lineup out each day. Pick a good one and make only minor variations for days off:
    I would go with:
    Martin
    Loney
    Kemp
    Ethier
    DeWitt
    Kent
    Pierre
    Shortstop
    Pitcher
    .
But the important thing is to keep the best hitters in the top part of the lineup. The best active hitters on this team going forward are almost surely the four I have at the top of this lineup plus perhaps Kent and DeWitt.
    .
Please forward these thoughts to the powers-that-be unless they don’t qualify as “constructive feedback.”
    .
    Thank You,
    .
    MartinLoneyKemp

I missed the game ’cause I was at work again. Glancing at the score, guess I didn’t miss much. Another game of Lowe getting 2 earned runs and no bat support.

While commentating for ESPN, Orel Hershiser had this to say on the subject of Lowe a month ago: “I couldn’t wait to get out of the National League when I left. A lot of good times with the Dodgers in L.A., but getting 2 runs of support a game gets tired real quick” (not a direct quote, but the basic gist of his statement). Lowe probably felt that way last year. At least he got his ring before coming to L.A.

  120. northstateblues

To the tune of “Only A Northern Song” from the Yellow Submarine soundtrack, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Blue Meanies!….

If you’re listening to this song
You might think the box score’s are all wrong
But they’re not, the goose eggs are intact

If you’re listening to this game
You might be on the verge of going insane
But you’re not, probably another heart attack

And it doesn’t even matter what kids we play
What vets will stay or if Joe’s right or wrong
’cause this season feels much too long.

    If October don’t feel faint
Then my friend, I might call you a saint
But you’re not, just a true loyal fan

    If you’re believing Rosenthal
You might think we have no hope at all
But we do, just throw him in the can

‘Cause it doesn’t really matter what team we play
Which Cy Young illusion we might play today
’cause this season feels much too long

‘Cause the only thing that matters is Scully’s call
A strong youth core, and Dodger Dogs ’til fall
But this season still feels too long

  121. northstateblues

Joe Borowski? Dave Delucci? To quote the construction worker from the beginning of “Major League”, “WHO ARE THESE F***ING GUYS?!!!!!!!!!!” Not for LaRoche and Ethier.

And if :: gulp :: we did trade those two to the Indians, and they weren’t enough for Sabathia, package in a PVL. Couldn’t hurt, more excperience than a prospect, because after all, a prospect is just a “prospect”ive faliure!

blech, now I’ve caught the Itis!

  122. junkyardjamie

APPLAUDING YOUR SONG!!! northstateblues – fabulous job on that song!!
    .
That’s why I’m hoping that article was just rumors and nothing else – that would just suck!!!
    .
Then I just read from the homepage about tonight’s game, and Torre was all about finding out about the kids and their abilities and what they can do.
    .
    http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/news/gameday_recap.jsp?ymd=20080613&content_id=2907263&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=la
    .

Torre was asked if winning was any less important in Los Angeles.

“It’s always dangerous to say it’s not that important,” he said. “Nothing is further from the truth, but the fact of the matter is, it’s not 110 mph all the time [like New York]. When you have a young team, they’re going to get better through playing. You’ve got to figure out how good they’re going to be, and that takes time

  123. leekfink

Hopefully, this is considered a productive entry.
    .
Good blog at the LA Times. It should be read by all.
    .
I don’t think that it’s a coincidence that the Dodgers have been shut-out on consecutive nights on the two nights that Matt Kemp has ben unavailable–just as I don’t think it was a coincidence that Matt Kemp was hitting third in the line-up when the Dodgers were hot. I don’t think that Kemp could single-handedly change things, but you just need to read Jon Weisman’s article in SI a year ago about The Bison to know that Kemp remains the biggest possible game-changer on the team. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/jon_weisman/06/21/dodgers.flux/index.html
    .
Fundamentally, the whole team is struggling (offensively–though the pitching hasn’t been golden, either, but it’s mostly the offense). But here’s the things. The kids are doing OK or better, the veterans are doing not OK to poor–yet, somehow, the kids are being blamed. What’s more stunning is that not only are the kids being blamed for the team not winning, but the so-called “problems” with the kids are NOT problems that the kids are having, but rather are the problems that the veterans have.
    .
For instance, Larry Bowa today (Friday) said that the veterans know how to work a count. Someone was counting the few pitches that Kent, for instance, took in all his at-bats today. And in fact, it’s a season-long–really, a career-long–issue. Except for Andruw Jones–who seems to be seeing an inordinate number of pitches this season, based on his frequent strikeouts–the veterans are teh ones who are completely failing to work the count. Jeff Kent has the lowest number of pitches-per-at-bat of any position player this year. Second-worst is Nomar Garciaparra, fourth-worst is Mark Sweeney. All worse than any of the kids, and Pierre is better than only Kemp. And, on a career-basis, Kent sees 3.57 pitches-per-at-bat; Pierre sees only 3.44; Nomar a measley 3.19. Compare that to Kemp who, in his short career has seen 3.67; Ethier has seen 3.71; Loney has seen 3.77. It is an absolute disgrace to have our most senior coach on the staff (sure, Schaeffer is the Bench Coach, but everyone knows that Bowa is the de facto number 2 to Torre) to go on TELEVISION and be COMPLETELY WRONG about basic FACTS. This is not stuff that you need CIA briefings for–you don’t even need to have the excellent grasp of stats that Jungar has–you just need to go on ESPN.com.
    .
It took me TEN MINUTES to look up the statistics that Larry Bowa is supposed to have learned in 38 years in major league baseball, and for which he is being paid to know. It is substantively terrifying and, as a public relations matter, embarrassing.
    .
I am not blaming the veterans–as I said, the whole team is struggling. But when the kids, who are actually doing better, earning less, and improving, are being blamed, it’s absurd.

  124. selltheteam

So it’s time for a little constructive criticism? Okay, here goes. Since the Dodgers are having so much trouble of late scoring runs, let’s try a different lineup today. Why not? We can’t score any fewer runs. A little shake-up may bring some runs.
    .
    Martin c
    Young lf
    Kemp cf
    Loney 1b
    Ethier rf
    Kent dh
    DeWitt 3b
    LaRoche 2b
    Maza ss

  125. leekfink

Just a last note–I am not too worried about trades. If we become “sellers” at the trading deadline, you simply don’t sell young, cheap talent who you still control without arbitration or free agency for several years. Those are the players you stock up with for making a run in future years. You deal guys with expiring contracts and who are, sadly, “proven veterans.”
    .
If we become “buyers” at the trading deadline, it will be because our offense is being led by the kids, and you don’t deal the heart of your team. You might deal “prospects,” but as we noted last summer and over the winter, our “prospects” are not prospects, they are major leaguers, and our best players.

  126. kpookiemon

I must say I’m becoming a Dywnn Younger believer. The knock on him was always his lead glove, but he’s made some great thows in the past couple games and some great catches. He looks like he thinks he belongs…which is what the Dodgers want ALL the kids to think. I get the felling Martin know’e he belongs in the big leagues. DeWitt knows he belongs. But Loney, Kemp, Either, Billingsley, Kershaw, Broxton, they’re still a little skiddish. I feel Young, Kemp and Ethier should start for the rest of the season. We’re not playing for 2008…sorry Kent, sorry Pierre, sorry Andruw. We are in the envious position of being sellers at the deadline with our excess trim, namely Pierre, Kent, and Andruw (good luck with him). It’s really the veterans swap meet anyway. And the Dodgers grow stronger by subtraction…a nice paradox. Dodgers have an option on Penny for 2009. I keep him. With Schmidt’s shoulder still in gumby land you you give Penny the respect and to let him work through his garbage.

With a little gambler’s swagger—like maybe thinking he belongs—Ned could really right this ship at the deadline. If he had the brilliance to move Pierre and Kent, under the auspices of allowing them to chase their ring, Dodgers would send a thundering message to the kids that “it’s on.” They’d be, as we used to say, “stoked, ” fired up. LaRoche (2B) and Young (LF) move into the starting line-up and you play hardball the second half of the season.

  127. selltheteam

    Some more constructive feedback.
    .
Package together Kent, Pierre, Sweeney, and Bennett in a trade for a real shortstop. Add Lowe if needed to get the job done.
    .
If Ned can’t get this little feat done, find a new GM (hint – look to Logan White and/or Kim Ng).

  128. dodgereric

First, the CC trade question. Why on God’s green earth would we trade hitting for pitching? We haven’t scored a run in a week! Well, it seems that way.

Second, and I can’t believe I did this, here is a catalog of our songs. You can use the date to find the song in the archives to the right. As I was flying through the posts rather fast, I’m sure I missed a few. I apologize in advance. I ran through in reverse and stopped looking after May 1st. BTW, The Loney Song is still being referenced by us at that date, so it’s older than May 1.

    Good Morning Dodger Fans,
This song just fell into my head when I was reading the comments yesterday when replying to Josh’s comments the topic. Once again, Josh, it’s all in fun, and we know there are more important things in life than writing these songs, but boy, it really is fun. From the country genre – here we go:
    .
    “Fans From All Places”
sung to: “Friends in Low Places”
    by Garth Brooks
Dedicated to all the men and women on this board
who care so much about our Beloved Dodgers
    .
Blame it all on the suit
    Who showed up with loot
And ruined our boys that do care
We’re the first ones to know
    The first ones to show
    We are the first ones
    Who show “them” we care
    And we heard the surprise
And the fear in your eyes
When we show you your class of real pain
    And we roasted you
Said, “Ned you know were not through
And you’ll always hear us complain”
    .
Cause we are fans from all places
    Where the stories drown
And the songs chase our blues away
    And we’ll be okay
We are big on Dodger Aces
We all think the young are the oasis
And, we are fans from all places
    .
Well, we guess you were wrong
    Druw doesn’t belong
But then, we’ve been there before
    Everything’s all right
    We’ll just say what’s right
So,just show Druw to the door
    Hey, we didn’t mean
    To cause a big scene
Just play our best Dodgers and then
    Well, we’ll be as high
    With a team of power
    That we believe in
    .
Cause we are fans from all places
    Where the stories drown
And the songs chase our blues away
    And we’ll be okay
We are big on Dodger Aces
We all think the young are the oasis
And, we are fans from all places
    .
Well, we guess you were wrong
    Pierre just don’t belong
But then, we’ve been there before
    And everything is all right
    We’ll just say what’s right
So, just show Juan to the door
We didn’t mean to cause a big scene
Just wait till you see this big class
    Then Jo Jo and Neddy
We’ll head back to this board
And you can kiss our a**
    .
Cause we are fans from all places
    Where the stories drown
And the songs chase our blues away
    And we’ll be okay
We are big on Dodger Aces
We all think the young are the oasis
And, we are fans from all places
    .
    repeat chorus two more times

  132. boblee14@yahoo.com

Dodgereric, you have more time than I do. Nice job on the songs.

Not sure I can bring myself to listen to game today. Game won’t be on MLB.TV as is a Fox nationally televised game but St. Louis/
    Philly game on in midwest.

Well, Kemp back today. Let’s see what they do with him back..

  133. junkyardjamie

messed up again – at the top, it supposed to say “comments of the topic of constructive criticism” – sorry 🙂

  134. messagebear@msn.com

It’s time for our management to reach some decisions and act upon them.

First of all Furcal. Now that we know it’s a bulging disc, it should put a different perspective on things. A bulging disc is not a self-correcting issue, and management has at best been in denial about the severity of the problem, or at worst they have been lying to us the fans concerning the outlook with this problem. With the contract on Furcal expiring at the end of the season, I don’t know why we should be taking the responsibility for him getting what would amount to season ending surgery to correct the condition. It’s a sad outcome for a player who has shown his capability when 100%, but he hasn’t been 100% for us for the better part of his rather expensive contract. We apparently don’t have a capable successor at shortstop, and management needs to find one. Nomar isn’t going to be the answer, Berroa will not, and Hu probably will not be ready even next year, much less yet this season. If we are to find an answer within the organization, I don’t know why we haven’t tried DeJesus, who is the only one left. Now would be the time to find out whether we have another DeWitt, or whether going outside is the only answer.

While Torre and Ned seem to look at Pierre as the natural leadoff hitter (hitter used here very loosely), results since Furcal’s injury show that he’s not firing up the team to score runs, so there must be another answer. Why isn’t something else being tried? With Andruw out, I can somewhat understand not getting rid of Pierre, but he does not serve us well in the leadoff position, and even Torre and Ned should recognize that by now, as nearly everybody else does.

I would say that management needs to find a shortstop who’s either nearing the peak of his career, or who’s ready to take on an everyday assignment as a qualified prospect at that position. We have a couple of chips pitching-wise that should be available in trade for such a guy – namely Lowe and Penny. If necessary, I might include LaRoche and/or DY in the package. I would not include Loney, DeWitt, Kemp, and even Ethier. As for replacements for Lowe and even Penny, let’s start using Kuo as a starter, and to fill out the rest of the year even Park if necessary. I think that Wade has shown enough to let him be a long reliever – the way that we use long relievers like Park and Kuo has been to have them eat a few innings of a game that’s been already beyond lost, and Wade or somebody else should be equally able to fill in there.

The danger with that kind of trade or trades is that I have little to no faith in Ned to get good and future value for us, but some of these decisions need to be made and acted upon before the trade deadline, which is now approaching.

  135. enchantedbeaver

Nells – here’s one I wrote back on April 18 for Slappy. Thought you might appreciate it given your fondness for our proven veteran leader in the outfield. Think Mary Poppins:

    slappypopupwhineyassholedribblerbuntsatrocious
even in his outfield play he’s simply halitosis
if you play him long enough he’ll give you a neurosis
    slappypopupwhineyassholedribblerbuntsatrocious

  136. junkyardjamie

Enchanted – you are amazing!! That is too, too funny – lol!!!
Make sure eric adds that to the list. Some list isn’t it? Wow!! BTW – nice job on the movie ideas from yesterday, too.
    .
messagebear – Hopefully if we keep saying the same things over and over again in thousands of different ways whether it is through writtens statements, statistics and even our songs, etc., somebody will eventually pay attention. Very nice job in your statement. It can’t get much clearer than that.

  137. dodger 32

The problem with this team is 1) you have a lead off hitter that doesn’t get on base, doesn’t hit for power, and doesn’t drive in runs. 2) You have a 3rd or 4th place hitter who’s 40 years old and hitting .240. 3) you have a DH who hits .120 and is taking up a valuable roster spot. .4) you have a manager and GM who fail to recognize all of the above, and think it’s the young players faults that this team stinks. Josh, feel free to pass this along to all concerned. If these things are corrected, this team will have a much better chance to grow and learn how to win.

  138. junkyardjamie

Eric, et all – maybe we need to start keeping track of how many times the same exact thing is said over and over in our own special way – LOL fliegel!!!! That list would be huge considering it was probably repeated 800+ times yesterday – LOL!!

  139. dodger 32

This team is getting hard to watch because of managements decisions. Right now when the Dodgers are playing after they’re down by a run or 2, I try to do something more entertaining like cleaning out the cats litter box or taking out the garbage. Meanwhile Frank is trying to turn Dodger stadium into Disneyland and he’s installing a green bra around the outside of it. Maybe instead of that he should consider getting the right people to run this team the right way. Pass this on also Josh.

  140. junkyardjamie

fliegel – LOL – I think we can all stop posting now, you said it all in one word, and may I repeat – management (LOL)
    .
However – this is just too much fun 🙂

  141. dodger 32

dnelson@mcsd Maybe this will help them figure things out. Probably not though, and nothing will change unless people stop going to the stadium and it hurts Franks bottom line.

  142. messagebear@msn.com

What also might help is if the media turned their attention away from what is wrong on the field to what is wrong at the management table to let the situation get to where it is, meaning UNACCEPTABLE. That might light some fire under Frank, and even he might start questioning his decision makers and money spenders. If there is one thing that Frank won’t accept, it is being painted in an unfavorable light in the big LA community.

  143. junkyardjamie

I am bothered, like some of you, about the statement Bowa made about our young players not taking enough pitches. So, of course, I went to the stats to prove otherwise. Here it is: I took the 8 players who are our core 8 for now(plus DY), and I took the number of total pitches and divided that by the number of ABs to get a average number of pitches per player. Constructive cristicism – stop telling the kids to be patient – tell the vets
    .
    NP – number of pitches
    AB – at bats
    * ranked in order according to average of pitches taken per at bat
    .

    Martin: NP- 1,091
    AB – 245
    Ave # of pitches – 4.83
    Ethier: NP – 984
    AB – 209
    Ave # of pitches – 4.71
    Young: NP – 257
    AB – 56
    Ave # of pitches – 4.59
    Berroa: NP – 68
    AB – 15
    Ave # of pitches – 4.53
    Loney: NP – 1057
    AB – 245
    Ave # of pitches – 4.31
    DeWitt: NP – 841
    AB – 192
    Ave # of pitches – 4.31
    Kemp: NP – 932
    AB – 228
    Ave # of pitches – 4.08
    Pierre: NP – 918
    AB – 213
    Ave # of pitches – 4.03
    Kent: NP – 740
    AB – 204
    Ave # of pitches – 3.62

Notice who is at the bottom. So when the management complains about our young players not being patient enough at the plate, I will keep updating this list. With the exception of Berroa who has a small sample, all of our younger players are doing their job when it comes to taking pitches.

  144. ramslover

Eric and Jhall…this is a late post, but the right decision is for JHall is to see your father….hell, all you would miss at the Dodger game would be a pathetic offense and a great pitching performance wasted….Eric thanks for the reminder that Mom and Dad will not be forever. Sometimes in this rat race we take things for granted. I, for one, will be driving 2.5 hours to spend a few hours with my 74 year old dad. And we will be talking how frustrating the Dodgers are.

Anyway, watching the game last night was just a helpless feeling. The offense would have trouble against a good college team (exaggeration) but it is not ML caliber right now.

I am a Kent fan and he is not getting it done. He should not be in the 4th spot, Pierre well everyone knows. Ship Kent, Penny, Lowe, and all the over 30s and lets really get young. What do we have to lose, Games? We are 6 games under in a very weak division, so nothing is what lost, except for valuable experience for the youngsters. Give us hope!!!!

  145. ramslover

Dnel great stats. It is easier to pick on a kid than it is an adult. The kid really does not have alot of leverage and the vet may just kick Bowa ****. Just kidding. Bowa is probably saying in certain situations the kids are over anxious, but last night in the 8th and 9th, the Solci kid for Detroit was 3-1 on every hitter and all the batters swing at the 3-1 pitch, vets and kids. My thinking was take the 3-1 pitch and make him throw 2 consecutive strikes, I do not believe he would have. We needed runners and did not get any, young or old.

We have a dysfuntional team and the it seems the wrong management team to weem them. We need Scioscia or Steve Yeager. These guys know how to motivate and teach the young kids. No offense to Torre, he has been a great manager for many years, but his strength does not match the Dodgers needs. Frank do not let Ned do something stupid. the fans on this site will suffer the consequences if the kids are allowed to develop. Trade Kent to a contender and let him have a shot at a title.

  146. junkyardjamie

    Dodgerboy,
I didn’t watch the game yesterday, but I definitely know what you are saying because of the games I saw against SD, where we couldn’t score either. Boy, would I love to see Sciocscia or Yeager at the healm – wouldn’t that be something!!

  147. shill3@san.rr.com

It has been a while since I last blogged. As a matter of fact, the last time I did blog, I was one of the early critics against Grady and although most of you had already figured out his shortcomings, there were a few that defended Little and were critical of my thoughts. So here I am again. I haven’t followed the blogs for the past year yet I have done some catching up this morning. As usual, most of you are right on the beam and of course, some of you are very creative. So I guess it is time for me to support the notion that Ned does need to go (his track record is horrible) and Dodger fans need to find other things to do besides showing up to the games. As long as the attendance is up there, there is NO reason for ownership to worry about putting a good product on the field. Actually, I do think ownership does really want to win and is concerned with team performance. However, as long as they can pay the bills, there is no sense of urgency. That has been the Dodger problem for 20 years: No sense of urgency!

I will just say simply that Joe Torre needs to go and NOW! It was proven the past couple of years that a calm, unexcited manager does not work and does not at all motivate this young team. That is probably the far and away biggest issue with Torre. He just doesn’t have it in him to get these guys up for playing a high energy brand of baseball! And mix that in with ridiculous decisions like continuing to use Proctor who always gives up what once was, a close game. He also pulls his starters way too early on those rare occassions where they actually came prepared and are being effective. So think about that: When I mention an managers lack of energy, keep in mind that it also pertains exactly to preparation and mindset. Coaches with energy and fire prepare better and have their players prepared. Players learn to prepare better from them and learn the sense of urgency necessary to win! Without a fired up manager, players show up without an edge and lose any desire or need to be ready and up all the time. Sure, they are professionals. They should come ready to play. That is the same thought process of lifless personalities such as Jeff Kent who will get his numbers: Yeah, he’ll get HIS numbers and that is all that matters to him! Professionals are still human and human nature is to accept the personality and habits of those leading you. For examply, with Loney and Ethier, trade them now while their value is still high or get rid of Torre before he competely ruins those 2 young kids who are picking up bad habits of being toooo relaxed and not bringing any energy when the games are on the line! Regardless of timely hitting, there are things good coaching CAN control and this team isn’t polished at all, does not move runners over and either is clueless as to the opposing pitchers ‘out pitch’ or simply haven’t learned to shorten up their swings when all we need is for a ball to be pushed or pulled depending on the situation. It’s all about energy and preparation! Torre is of the current ‘old boys club’ school of managers that bounce around from team to team and survive because of the sorry baseball mentality that ‘it’s okay, we’ll get ’em next time or next at-bat’. He got lucky with a Yankee team that spent so much money on the best players in the league that noone could lose with. Well, let me correct myself. Torre is so bad that the Yankee dugout now looks like a bunch of lifeless souls that a new coach will have a long and hard journey to try and resurrect! As a more crucial statement, consider that their were no longer any real personalities in that Yankee dugout when he left as he drained all the energy and desire to win everyday that those guys had and completely turned around the greatest 75 year run of any organization of the major professional sports and was the antidote to the greatest so-called curse in baseball history: The curse of the Bambino!

I don’t know if it’s even worth saying more. That should sum it up farily well. Thanks for letting me vent! Keep up the good work Dodger Fans!

  148. messagebear@msn.com

If I were Scoscia, I’d avoid the McCourt ownership and the Ned GM’ship as the plague. He’s obviously got the better in those respective capacities, and he’s constantly able to do the best with that combination. No wonder they’re becoming the LA market predominant team. The point is that if McCourt really wants to win, he’s got an example just down the road of the kind of baseball savy management that it takes to do that. It doesn’t take a major real estate development surrounding the ballpark to accomplish it. Just get rid of Colletti for starters, and you might be surprised how far that alone will take you.

  149. messagebear@msn.com

My last contribution before the game, and obviously not constructive:

Torre S*CKS, and Ned S*CKS, and Frank just fiddles while the team burns.

  150. junkyardjamie

Very well said, shill. You should post here more often. However, like many of us, you are making too much sense for management to understand -lol. I would like to comment about trading Either and Loney. It is no secret to this board that I follow Ethier’s numbers pretty closely, as well as the rest of them, but I pay particular attention to his. He is currently 1 for 15 after having done such a fantastic job up until the series in SanDiego. I am not sure what is happening, but something sure is. He is one of the more patient batters at the plate, but I think this whole pitch count issue has him a little out of sorts to put it mildly. Lately when I watch him bat, he has taken pitches that are clearly his to hit, being a lefty and all, and everytime they are a called strike. So, when you said that this particular management is screwing him up, along with Loney (who happens to be a lefty too), I totally agree. Ethier has been a pretty selective batter until this whole “being patient” at the plate issue has come up. I think in some ways, other teams are finding out that our young players are being told to take pitches, and if I were a pitcher of an opposing team, I would be throwing strikes right down the middle too. In a nutshell – our management is still the issue, not the kids.

Lets start a Steve Yeager Campaign! What is there not to like about him. If you have ever met him, he is passionate and a great baseball mind. He came up under Lasorda and I know Tommy has his critics, but he knew how to be aggressive. Yeager, aka Boomer, has management experience and he has coached the Martins, Loneys, Bills, so he has a history with them.

Instead we go for the name and I personally have nothing against Torre, but he was not the right man….He is too loyal to the vets who do not produce. Sweeney, nice guy when I met him at ST, but you cannot be 5-50 and keep your job as the numero uno PH….Pierre, great makeup and hard worker and I have campaigned to lay off him, but too many Groundouts and weak fly balls, Kent .248 and only 29 RBI in the 4th spot, how have the kids caused this? Nomar should have been released in ST, he is too injury prone and will not produce.

I love the headlines about Schmidt….Setback…how can it be a setback if it never was viable. At his age and the 3 major injuries that they tried to repair, it is not going to happen. He was injured before they signed him, I cannot prove it but it is obvious. He barely was throwing in the low 80s when he came to ST in 2007 after resting all freaking winter. He duped Ned and Stan Conte. I commend his effort to rehab, but just go away, tired f… reading about it.

Thanks for your interesting article. One other problem is that mesothelioma is generally brought on by the inhalation of material from mesothelioma, which is a carcinogenic material. It can be commonly witnessed among personnel in the structure industry with long exposure to asbestos. It could be caused by residing in asbestos covered buildings for long periods of time, Genes plays an important role, and some consumers are more vulnerable towards the risk as compared with others.

Furthermore, i believe that mesothelioma cancer is a scarce form of most cancers that is usually found in individuals previously exposed to asbestos. Cancerous cellular material form within the mesothelium, which is a shielding lining which covers the vast majority of body’s organs. These cells normally form in the lining from the lungs, abdomen, or the sac that really encircles the heart. Thanks for revealing your ideas.
