Everyone in LA certainly knows that Russell Martin is deserving of some very serious consideration for the NL Rookie of the Year award. Now, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com is telling everyone around the country.

Great read!
When Maddux was warming up for his very first start at Dodger Stadium, I hollered down to him that he had the best catcher in the game. He looked at me, smiled, and nodded yes.
I was fearful that Russell might be overlooked as a Rookie of the Year candidate because of that East Coast / West Coast thing. Hopefully, this will help to overcome that.

Great article! Any guess is as good as mine as to where the Dodgers would be without him this year. This guy is a true leader.
I too am pleased that Russell is getting acknowledged. I expect after 53 I might be his biggest fan. However, I am not concerned about being rookie of the year. I am most interested in year 3 after the sophomore year. I think that award has put higher expectations on many players than they can meet. I think Russell is a good one in the Dodger tradition of catchers -Campy, Roseboro, Yeager, Ferguson, Scioscia, Piazza, LoDuca, perhaps others I missed. I am so pleased he is a Dodger. Wish J Bay was too. A good Canadian player. Kyle Orr, top Canadian draft pick 2006, has apparently not signed with the Dodgers. Tonight C’mon Lowe, C’mon Russell, C’mon bullpen. Go Dodgers!!
Mighty pleased that Russ gets some attention. You don’t often get a rookie stepping in and instantly looking like he’s been there for seasons already.
I read that article earlier today when I was in Computer Science class. It’s a great read. Russell definitely deserves the attention that he’s getting. The way he stepped in and took control is a great accomplishment that not many people are, or have been, able to do. I hope he’s a fixture in this organization for many years to come.
crackjok3r – What do you mean you read the article in computer science class? You Dodger fans stop at nothing. I must confess I used to look up Dodger info in the computer lab when I was teaching. The kids of course knew more than me so really didn’t need me except to control the lab a bit. I also hope Russell will be a long time Dodger. Good catchers are to come by. Especially pleased with his record in throwing out base stealers this year and that will only get better.
Hey euhlman – Do you remember Steve Yeager’s snap throws to first base? Man he picked off a lot of sleeping base runners.
I have been closely watching Russell Martin and he, too, has made several snap throws to first. He needs to learn to do it from the crouch (as Yeager did) instead of hopping up and throwing. Once he masters this (and he will), he will be among the very best in the game (well, better than he already is, that is).

Yes 53, I remember those. Love that play. Johnny Bench and Benito Santiago used to be good at that also. No question Russell will add to his resume. He is a gamer.
euhlman – LOL our teacher was MIA today, so we basically had a free period. ESPN just happens to be one of the few websites that the school computers doesn’t block, so I figured I could blow some time reading about sports. When the page loaded, the first thing I saw was the nice big picture of Russell. I couldn’t help but read it, and I’m glad I did. Unfortunately there wasn’t much else to read on espn.com today, so I was pretty much bored for the rest of class. lol
I am amazed at how young so many of the Dodger fans posting in this blog are – you, Ray, Patriotacts, etc. Passion for the Dodgers seems to be as great now as it was when I was your age in the fifties. Good show. We fortunately had teachers in the fifties that would bring a radio into class for World Series games, mostly played in the afternoon.
I had a Geometry teacher that was a diehard Dodger fan in high school that brought in a radio during the playoffs, what memories !!!
Martin could take the ROY if the Dodgers end up first in the West. ESPN, newspapers and sports channels normally start tracking the leaders toward the end of the season. And with the West being the only real race remaining we’ll pull in some good ratings !!! Martin stands a good chance.
