We showed some heart in San Francisco…

The lame headlines have to end at some point, but why start now. Believe it or not, this blog is the feed for the Dodgers’ Facebook page, too, so we have to make sure it’s something remotely exciting, right? I’m assuming you’re all Facebook friends of ours by now, but in case you’re not…

Also, for those of you so inclined to listen, KABC’s DodgerTalk is now being podcast online. It’s usually up within 24 hours of the show, so listen in the next day if you’re not in Los Angeles or just want to hear Ken and Soosh talk about the team with your fellow fans.

And don’t forget, Friday is the sleepover. Have any of you been to this before? It’s a pretty cool annual event and this year is even better because we’re showing Field of Dreams after the Dodger game (and then you and dad can have a catch on the field, right?)

Here’s tonight’s lineup:

Furcal, SS

Martin, C

Ethier, RF

Manny, LF

Blake, 3B

Loney, 1B

Kemp, CF

Castro, 2B

Wolf, P

    Repost, slightly edited:

Joe Torre as the Dodgers manager has his upsides and downsides. The Downside is that he changes the lineups often, and goes through bullpen arms like Darryl Strawberry used to go through… nevermind.

The upside, though is because of or in spite of him, we’ve ended up the furthest we have been in the playoffs in a couple of decades. It wasn’t Grady, Tracy, Davey or Russell taking us to the NLCS. Also, since we have Manny, he’s the perfect manager to have to handle the media situation, after dealing with the NY media and fans for 14 years. It’s hard for me to think of a Dodger manager who could’ve handled the somewhat delicate, blue-ego-crushing situation we have before us (though I could think of a couple of owners who could’ve handled it better than the current one. Might as well be pushing PEDs on their Dream Foundation fields the way they market him, hurts for me to say it too. But I’d have no problem if they did even one 30-second spot with Manny saying “Don’t do drugs, mmmkay? Drugs are bad.” Instead of turning him into a toy. Twice.) Sure, Lasorda would’ve probably had the same tolerance he had for Steve Howe, but that’s not handling the problem, that’s cutting it off at the bud, and making sure it doesn’t grow into something worse that can end up damaging the whole plant. In hindsight, probably a better option, but one that is not an option with the current leadership.

Yet, Joe handles it, in the way that Tom Cable is uniquely qualified to be the Onfield Coordinator… I mean… Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders, hands tied behind his back, under a microscope 24/7, getting key plays called in by the bespeckeled man in the booth. Difference being, Al’s won 3 championships, gone 5 times to the Championship game, and over the course of his life revolutionized his sport and the way people view it (Though PED use was much more rampant in the Oakland locker room than in the Dodger clubhouse). Al’s gone senile, though he’s forgotten more about his team’s sport than Frank might ever know about his team’s sport. With Torre’s knowledge added, I think it’s a push.

Joe and Ned want pitching? I think you’d better listen to what the baseball people are telling you, Frank, they’ve been around long enough to know that teams like this don’t fall off trees, especially as the core that’s up for arbitration sooner than we’d like to think is watching your every move, considering whether the Dodgers are a place they’d like to spend a lengthy part of their careers playing for. For some, you couldn’t blame them if they wanted to leave at this point, let alone if the Owner shows a vote of no confidence in the team, while marketing a bobblehead for the same vacationing player twice, playing Colonel to Manny’s Elvis.

    Hey Josh,
I love my Dodgers but there are two things I won’t do. sleep outside and get a tatoo! I have never gone camping. Not my thing and needles scared the **** out of me. For those that might not know, they were giving away a tatoo on Dodger Talk last Sunday from the owner of Trueblue Tatoo.

  3. nellyjune

Josh – I did notice your entries are the same on facebook. That is very cool. Yes, we did show some heart in San Francisco, and some of were there to witness it.

Let’s hope they can get the series tonight. That would be sweet to only have to worry about a sweep tomorrow. I guess tomorrow’s game is sold out. My husband tried to get tickets to see the day game with my son. He is their baby, and he sells just on his pitching. To think he is only paid about $600,000 due to a bonus, or else he would be getting the league minimum just like James and Matt.

I am heading home……catch you all later!!!

  4. northstateblues

Now that I’ve re-ranted, I want to say thanks, Josh, for letting us know about the Dodger talk podcasts. I always feel left out of the fun here in NorCal.

  5. truebluewill

Nellyjune, I just read your post from 3:31 AM. It sounds like you had a great time. You really gave a great description of not only the game but of the whole day’s events. I especially liked the part about seeing the players on the team bus and having them wave at you. After all we give to the players as fans it’s nice to get some acknowledgment back from them.

Also it’s nice to see how ITD and the love of the Dodgers has brought all these different people together to form new friendships. I’ve only been blogging on ITD for about a month and a half, and have really enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone better and having people getting to know me.

First Torre want pitching Ned didn’t really do his job and now both wanted them now lol

Manny Ramirez was moved from third in the lineup to fourth. “Just to do something different,” Torre said, adding that he wanted to move up Russell Martin, who had an on-base percentage of .483 in his last eight games. . . . James Loney sat because a left-hander, Jonathan Sanchez, started for the Giants. Mark Loretta started in Loney’s place. . . . Will Ohman, who has been on the disabled list since May 28 because of shoulder and elbow problems, is throwing off a mound.

Does it really matter if a left handed was starting Loney can hit them and Pierre can also but since Torre being a little bit smart not to ever bench Ethier for now Loney doesn’t need to be sitting again.

This is not last year when he was hitting .249. This year he’s hitting .319.

  7. trublu4ever

The Giants have the Panda but we have the Bison! Not to mention, Everyday Dre and Fear the Beard!! GO DODGERS….BEAT THE GIANTS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!
TBW ~ it is very true that we here on ITD are a family. And, a very unique group to say the least.
    Great post NSblues, as usual!

  8. truebluewill

NSB ~ I really liked your Lights Out (based on Journey’s “Lights”) post. Hopefully we can keep the lights out for two more days. I’m still wearing my Brooklyn hat how about you?

  9. bluecrewgirl

NS, I agree that Torre is good at managing personalities, but the bp is another story. I’m concerned about what they’ll have left for the playoffs. Nelly, I’ll have to go back and read your account of the game. Glad you had fun and that they won.

  10. brandondaughrity@hotmail.com

Delwyn Young coming through for us!!! That a boy Peewee!!! 2 run triple!! Pirates 4- Rockies 1!!

  11. brandondaughrity@hotmail.com

It’s pretty sad… The Rox are having a great second half.. They’re right in the thick of the wild card race and There’s NO ONE at their game!

  12. nellyjune

I posted on the wrong thread 🙂

northstateblues – The guy wasn’t right behind me but he might has well have been. Instead of cheering on his team, he had some made up phrase for every one of our players, the worst, of course, being about Manny. His specific phrase was “Manny……………you are the father of my twins”, which in and of itself was not so bad, but his real kids were sitting next to him (grade school age), and they were saying the same thing. All I kept thinking is “I feel sorry for whoever is going to be their teacher this year.” I understand the cheering for your own team, telling us we suck, the “Beat LA” chant, and heckling, but I think that particular comment said by a kid was just disturbing, especially when the kid is not even old enough to have his own kids yet.

truebluewill – Thanks truebluewill. Seeing the bus leave back to the hotel was a nice nightcap to a very fun day/evening. We have Collie to thank for taking us to that spot. …..And yes, we are a pretty fun group, and thanks for sticking around to find out what it’s like on a daily basis. Some of us worry sometimes that if a new reader were to read ITD today, what they must be thinking, but I think if you read a while and get to know the personalities, it becomes pretty clear, we are all here for the same reason……………….Dodger baseball. It only takes a few posts to make yourself known around here, and you have done a wonderful job in doing that. It is a pleasure reading what you have to say.

  13. trublu4ever

Just heard that Weaver will start tomorrow. Going to be a BP game and they called up a knuckleballer from AAA. I really worry about knuckleball pitchers…..and the ability of the catcher to hold on to the ball.

  14. brandondaughrity@hotmail.com

trublu… A knuckleballer? Who in the world would that be!?!?? And for WHO!?!? Hopefully not for O-Dawg or Billz!!

  15. trublu4ever

Brandon ~ I don’t know who was sent down or if anybody was placed on DL. They just did an interview on the Giants pre-game and thats where I heard about the pitcher.

  16. oldbrooklynfan

    Howzit Goin’ Everybody.
Right now the Pirates are goin’ pretty good, let’s hope they keep goin’.
At least the Dodger BAs are O.K., all 8 regular position players are batting over the 260 mark.
If you add JP, that makes nine.
What do we have here, Joe Martinez, I wonder what he’s got to show us, tonight
    GO WOLF<<<<GO DODGERS********.

  17. kpookiemon

Bochy is teaching Torre a valuable but simple lesson: he doesn’t mind pitching to Casey Blake. Let Kemp protect Manny.

  18. boblee4014

After 113 games, I’m still trying to figure out what Joe’s strategy is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What does it take to get risp into runs?????????????????
Joe’s as worthless as teats on a rattlesnake

  19. bluecrewgirl

Nelly and trublu, would have been nice if Andre could have doubled twice last night, but if they get two wins in a row against the Giants, it’s all good.

  20. northstateblues

TrueBlueWill: Got in the car after getting off work again. Heard the Giants get the first run… again. Had to go to the store… again. Listened to the game on the radio… again. Raced inside the house, and threw on my lucky Brooklyn hat… again. Turned on the TV, and saw the Dodgers took a 2-1 lead, and is now 4-1… again!

Eerie, yes, but I wouldn’t mind a little improvement for the Dodgers on the score tonight.

And because Kruk and Kuip are calling the game up here in NorCal tonight… I’m listening to the game in Spanish. I’ll understand 60%-75%, but light years better than the other choice.

JoePierre, have your LA hat on?

  21. brandondaughrity@hotmail.com

where’s the song!?!? where’s the song!?!? It’s been far too long!! I want to hear the oscyar Mayer Loney song!!

  22. brandondaughrity@hotmail.com

Come on!! He’s coming out of a slump!! We can’t get the Loney song!?!? My Loney has a first name!!

  23. dodgereric

My Loney has a first name,

    It’s J-A-M-E-S

My Loney has a second name,

    It’s L-O-N-E-Y

I love to watch him every day

And if you ask me why I’ll say

‘Cause James Loney has a way

    With H-I-T-T-I-N-G!

  25. colliethec

Okay so I got home late as usual and my thoughts were lead off walk and a run scored & that we hadn’t done well with RISP.
Well that has changed in the last few minutes so my blood pressure is down…
I know that Roberto is there tonight in the Bleachers. So hang tough Roberto. They can be tough there and really try to instigate fights.

  26. northstateblues

The warp is placing my posts all over the Space-Time Continuum. If you read my post dated 8:50pm, you’ll read about the new adventures of my lucky Brooklyn hat, which is spooky in how it happens, but no complaints.

  27. dodgereric

HA! I was about to remedy my error by crediting The Loney Song to leekfink and MLK only to have north beat me to it!

  28. colliethec

Hello there Tru! No problem. It was so much fun hanging out with you guys. Sorry if I was a little hyper. I was just excited to go to a game there with Dodger fans. I’m usually there with Giants fans and try to be respectful. So I was just excited to be with you guys after rooting on here for so long.
I see you guys got home late. Sorry to keep you there late but I think it was worth it. Next time you all will have to stay the night and go to a couple of games. Maybe we can all get rooms at their hotel. But shhh. Don’t let the cat out of the bag!
    D4 — I posted something up above for you…
Hows the leg? D4 took one for the team last night. A guy threw a beer bottle and hit him in the leg.
I call it the Giants fan way of buying a drink!

  29. colliethec

NSB— I saw your post & story — NICE!!!
Wish you could of made it to the game last night. You were missed!!
I said some other things in a prior post but submission errors and 10 minutes later it is somewhere in the Mother Ship!

  30. dodgereric

Sucks to be a Giant fan the last two nights I bet. Imagine their disappointment……… BOO FRIGGIN’ HOO!

  31. truebluewill

NS ~ Just read about your Bklyn. hat. Glad to hear it still has it’s magic. As long as we keep wining I’ll keep wearing.

  32. kpookiemon

If things hold up (they should, shouldn’t they????), the Dodgers can relax a bit against Lincecum and get out the brooms. If things hold up (they should, shouldn’t they????), these past two games will go a long way toward getting the Dodgers’ swagger back. Manny starting to hit again doesn’t hurt, either……

  33. bluecrewgirl

Manny and Andre getting it done. Oldbrooklynfan, Vin was saying that after all the years of catching it’s like running uphill to first for Molina.

  34. brandondaughrity@hotmail.com

So, it’s looking like we just needed to get back into playing the NL west!! Looking good tonight!

  35. northstateblues

(channeling Journey as I look into the sky and see Bison’s homer exit stage CF) OOOOOOO-WOOOOOO-OOOOO… Why so blue?

  36. truebluewill

First MANNY!!!!!! Now MATTY!!!!! Stick a fork in the Gnats. They are done tonight. As Vin just said hang up the phone at AT&T the Gnats dialed a wrong number!

  37. northstateblues

Charlie Steiner and Rick Monday banter (don’t remember who said what) : You know how you can tell it’s the 8th? The Seagulls are shuffling about, yeah, they’re getting hungry… (definitely Charlie said this) Yeah, HEH-HEEEEH, Just like Heh-heh-heeeh, just like the bullpen!

Some of the most interesting stuff ever said during baseball broadcasts happens in the late innings of a blowout.

  38. truebluewill

103 pitches for Wolf. MacDonald warming that looks like it for Wolf. If it was me I’d let him finish the game but that’s not how the game is played now.

  39. brandondaughrity@hotmail.com

The problem with this is… If JMac gets in trouble.. then we use another reliver to take care of it for him. If we start with Wolf and he gets in trouble… then you bring in jmac

  40. brandondaughrity@hotmail.com

Or the Dodgers whoop some Gnat ***!! Nice game boys!! Let’s pull off the upset tomorrow and get the SWEEP!!

  41. selltheteam

Okay, my bad. Wolf’s next pitching performance is next Monday, while McDonald may be needed tomorrow. So, who should pitch the ninth inning? Oh, let’s ask Joe: well, Randy’s already over his limit, so let’s throw McDonald.

  42. truebluewill

WTG Dodgers!!!! We did what we had to do, at least win the series. Wouldn’t a sweep be sweet! Good night all, I have to get up for work in 4 hours. The lack of sleep is well the win.

  43. shad80

Wow espn.com is dumb look at this. They think we still have Ozuna in our organization.

    · Orlando Hudson 2b – Aug 11: Day-To-Day
    · Chad Billingsley sp – Aug 10: Day-To-Day
    · Pablo Ozuna 2b – Aug 8: Suspension
    · Jason Schmidt sp – Aug 7: 15-Day DL

    · Freddy Sanchez 2b – Aug 11: Day-To-Day
    · Aaron Rowand cf – Aug 11: Day-To-Day

  44. nellyjune

Good Evening ITD readers and writers!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow!!! Obviously I wasn’t home, and it was probably a good thing, considering screaming for my team like I did last night may not have been the wisest choice here. ……….but now that I am home and in the safe environment of ITD, I can now scream………………………..ALRIGHT DODGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!WAY TO GO BOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RAFFY, RUSSELL, ANDRE, MANNY, CASEY, JAMES, MATTY, JUAN, AND RANDY- JUST AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  45. nellyjune

Hey Collie!!!! How are you doing tonight? Thank you for being a fabulous host. I think it was seeing them off to their hotel last night gave them the motivation to smash the gnats tonight. That was definitely one of the many highlights of the evening. I am still so very impressed how many Dodger fans were there last night. It was a great feeling.

  46. nellyjune

I did cheer for JP, loud and proud too. “WooooooooooooooooHooooooooooooooo GO JUAN PIERRE!!!!!!!!!!!! At that point I wanted to be as annoying as possible to the gnat fans around us (hubby excluded, of course) so I was really yelling for everyone in that manner, but I gave a special shout out to JP since he actually came in at the right time last night. My husband did relay that message onto my daughter, and she was especially proud of me.

  47. nellyjune

Collie – That clubhouse photo has a nice shot of Andre’s head – LOL!!!! Actually, the photos of warm-ups, I remember that stuff happening, especially the one where Andre, Matt, O-Dog and JP are seemingly having a good time stretching. Also, I remember Andre signing autographs. He spent alot of time signing in which I was very impressed.

  48. ksdodgers@hotmail.com

Has anyone talked about this? If the playoffs started today, we’d be facing the FREAKIN St. Louis Cardinals in the DS. Besides rooting for the Dodgers, how about rooting for a Central/East team to win the Wild Card? That way, we’d only have to face either the Phillies OR the Cardinals in the NLCS. Not that I don’t have faith in our team, but I’d rather not face St. Louis or Philly in a DS. Here’s to Florida/Chicago overtaking the Rox/Giants for the Wild Card.

  49. knouffbrock@frontiernet.net

nelly- don’t let up on them
Tough match up for Weaver, but he’s stepped up for us before: SWEEP! SWEEP! SWEEP!

  50. nellyjune

Good Morning ITD readers and writers!!!!!!!!!!!! Boy, listening to Bay Area sports radio this morning (KNBR), you would think the gnats got their butts kicked last night………………………………………………..WAIT!!!!!!! THEY DID!!!!!! LMAO!!!! All of their callers are calling in saying to not let Dodger fans into the surrounding bars and eateries in the AT&T Park area. Also, they are using the Star Wars theme today, thinking that Lincecum is their only hope for a win today. I think the Dodgers need to find their brooms. They just might need them to SWEEP today. A sweep would be mighty, mighty sweet today.

Good Morning Brownpaperbag!!!! It’s good to see you around these parts again.

knouffbrock – All I had to do to my son is smile, and he knows exactly why I am smiling. I did the same thing to our custodian as I drove in the school parking lot today.

tru – Is the game on tv up here today?

  51. thinkingblue

NELLY – TRU – ERIC – COLLIE – NS – you must be loved by your surroundings…feels good to be a Dodger Fan!

  52. selltheteam

If Charlie Haeger (the knuckleballer) is slated to be the long reliever behind Weaver today, who will be catching? I’m guessing that Ausmus will start, partly due to the day game following a night game, and partly due to the difficulties of catching (or blocking) the knuckleball.

  53. enchantedbeaver

And mostly due to Martin not being able to hit the broad side of a barn from inside with the barn door closed.

  54. dodgereric

    Here is a marketing no-brainer.

T-shirts bearing joepierre’s chant, “BEATen by LA!”

Proceeds to fund other long-time and far-away Dodger fans to visit Dodger Stadium.

Subject to joepierre’s approval, of course.
