Trade deadline passes…

Sherrill should be at the park today and Claudio Vargas got traded today, essentially to open up a spot in the ‘pen for George.

That’s all at this point…obviously trades can still be made when guys clear waivers, but it looks like we’re quiet for the rest of the day. Ned Colletti will be on air with Eric Collins and Steve Lyons tonight during the PRIME TICKET broadcast, so tune in early in the game to hear about all that went on down to the wire.

Here’s tonight’s lineup in Atlanta:

Furcal, SS

Ethier, RF

Manny, LF

Blake, 3B

Loney, 1B

Kemp, CF

Martin, C

Hudson, 2B

Schmidt, P

Well, looks like we’re going with what we got. That’s ok, cause with Sherrill and Quo looking good, we may not need another starter. We’ll see how that goes. I would have liked to have seen Adrian from the Pads in a Dodger uniform

  2. eialamo

unbelievable Ned, thanks for nothing. The Dodgers arent gonna pass the first round of the playoffs. They dont have the starting pitching to go deep into the playoff. Bills was awefull last year during the playoffs. They have the talent why didnt they pull the trigger?

  3. selltheteam

Does anybody recall what happened the last time the Blue entered the playoffs with a 21 year old lefty as their ace?

  4. mdavis1892@yahoo.com

if bills can get back in the rhythm of things as he was at the beginning of the year he can give us good outings in the playoffs and if kershaw keeps pitching like he has been he’ll be our ace.kuroda did well yesterday,as long as the man stays conscistent and knows we arent asking a whole lot. 6 solid innings.no doubt the cards are looking a lot better then us and so are the phills with cliff lee now but if we can face someone like the rockies or giants or even cubs,im confident we can get by them..if we have to face the cards,we can win with a much improved bullpen.there were rumors of heath bell coming here, which would be crazy and no doubt make our bullpen the greatest in the majors, and best in quite some time, but im happy no young, talented major leagures were traded away.you say thanks for nothing ned,we just get a closer with an era just over 2.not to mention hes a lefty.just wait until october when the eighth inning comes along in a one run game with utley, howard, and ibanez coming up,and watch sherill set them down 1-2-3.i still have faith we can do well this post season, and i do know we’ll be even better next year, but for now, lets go dodgers.beat them braves.

  5. selltheteam

Darn, another math error. The guy I was thinking of was actually 20.
    .
BPB – Is it the starting five, the bench, the lineup, other such nonsense, or a combination?

  6. mdavis1892@yahoo.com

crash,im only 17 so my memory of the dodgers can only go back so far,but im assuming good things happened.

  7. enchantedbeaver

At least Ned didn’t trade the entire farm away, but let’s look ahead to next season:
    .
Starting Staff: Billz, Kersh, Kuroda, ???, ???
(Might we end up with such stars that can fill the magical shoes of Wolf and Schmidt?)
    .
    Bench: Pierre, ???, ???, ???, ???
(Gonna be tough to find another Loretta, Castro and Ausmus.)

Oh what wonders we might see in blue!! Honestly, it can’t be any worse than we’re seeing this year. TELL me it can’t be any worse.
    .
    Somebody hold me.

  8. caligreen

what I dont get is, how the hell can these other teams get good players and not give up any of their blue chip prospects, but we have to basicaly give up the farm to land some one. Can some one please explain this to me before i pull my hair out

Good afternoon everyone, hope you’re all doing well! I think Ned could have done more, but I’m glad we didn’t sell the farm to do it! I’m excited about Sherrill!
    .
    .
For today’s game, we really need a few of those first inning runs to help out Schmidt!! Let’s go blue!!!

  11. kpookiemon

At least that punk Dodger killer, Peavy, is off to the south side of Chicago.

enchanted, I can’t even think about next year. Who knows what Logan White will do? Did I just say that? As for the currently employed GM, if the first third of the season is to identify needs, (with the second third trying to rectify them), how come Ned always plays the Trading Deadline game so goofy? He didn’t KNOW in March this team needed starting pitching? Or relief pitching? Did he assume amassing PVLs Vargas/Estes/Weaver/Milton/Ohman was a ticket to October? I loved how McDonald won the 5th spot out of Spring Training by default…everybody else fell flat on their collective faces. And then McDonald lasted, what, two or three starts? My nerves. Oh that’s right, he signed Randy Wolf. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  12. enchantedbeaver

Crash – throw in a idiot manager and a fool GM and I think that be reason enough to keep the bag.

    One word caligreen – NED.

  13. aeversw

I wonder how many runs Schidt will give up tonight? 4? 5? It does’t matter really. The Dodgers will have to comeback tonight and with the offense struggling lately thats the last thing we need. I think Joe and Ned need to think with their head and not with their heart. Jason should be applauded for his hard work to just get back to the big leagues. A lesser man would have quit and taken his millions of dollars(coughANDRUWJONEScough). Hopefully Schmidt get’s whacked around tonight, Elbert comes in and shuts the braves down for 3 innings and he gets the next start in the 5th spot.

  14. enchantedbeaver

I guess we all expected too much from Ol Ned. Afterall, he had all winter to come up with starting pitching and only landed us Wolf, so netting us nothing at the deadline shouldn’t be surprising.

Looking forward to the first three Braves hitting the ball against the outfield wall, like in the first Schidtty start this year. Kinda like a softball game where the rules penalize you for too many home runs, so the hitters just want to smash the ball to the power alleys.

I really don’t know where this negativity is coming from. I think Ned’s done a good job this summer (and last summer, I might add). We got Sherrill for a couple prospects, which makes our bullpen Broxton, Sherrill, Belisario, Troncoso, Kuo, Mota, all having a combined ERA of 2.58. Bullpens win playoff series. The Blue Jays were simply asking too much for Halladay. That’s why NOBODY got him. It wasn’t worth it to swap Kershaw or Billingsley for Halladay. I’m sure it’s different people complaining, but I remember people even complaining that we traded sorry Andy LaRoche for Manny last year, and now we’re complaining that we didn’t unload enough? C’mon, guys, Ned did a good job. And next year is next year. We’ll think about this year, and I think we have a really good shot.

  20. enchantedbeaver

Thanks Scott, I had been somewhat successful blocking them from my memory – thanks for reminding me of all that Ned has done for us!!

I’m glad we held onto guys like Lambo, Lindblom and E. Martin though. Ned’s shown us he has no talent in signing FAs so the only way we’ll ever have a consistantly decent team is through the young guys coming up.

Of course we need a manager that is “kid friendly” so they might actually develop at an accelerated pace rather than forced to bat 8th most of the time and retard that growth.

I see the Lineup was moved around. Hopefully it will do us good.
    *
I see new names WELCOME TO ITD.
    *
I’m glad that the trade is over, now our boys can concentrate. But yeah right…the deadline isn’t really til August who knows when. I think the trades should happen earlier in the season. I just don’t think it’s fair, let say that the trade for Loney happens…he is in the No. 1 team and has contributed to our wins (he is a spectacular 1st baseman), then he gets traded to the NLWest last place team. Poor LONEY. I honestly don’t think it’s fair…but that’s just me. I know we can get someone great in return. I guess I am thinking of the individual human’s feeling than the over come of the whole team. I’ll get over it.
    *
LET’S GO DODGERS….LET’S BEAT THE BRAVES!

  24. truebluewill

I ‘m glad the trading deadline is over. I’m happy with what they did. Of course it would have been nice to get Haladay. I’m glad that Kersh & Bills didn’t get traded and the 25 man roster is still intact. I feel Sherrill is a good addition to the bullpen and they will probably add either another bullpen arm & maybe a starter in a wavier trade. Remember we still have a 7 game lead and are 24 games over .500. I think Ned and Joe should get some credit for that.

  25. ksdodgers@hotmail.com

I think Loney’s a bit overrated. This guy will probably never be a power guy, and he’s slow. I thought he would be a .320-.330 guy, but he’s been hovering around .290 for two years now. Now, he is clutch, and I still like him, but I would’ve taken Adrian Gonzalez for him in a heartbeat.

  26. scott_in_arcadia

Loney needs to walk more and hit more HR’s because, like most slow guys, he hits into a lot of double plays and that’s 2 outs at a time boys & girls.

  27. cogopman

With the trade deadline over and the Dodgers didn’t go for Starting pitching. Is there any quality starting Pitchers that will clear waivers by August 31st?

  28. messagebear@msn.com

    Warning:
This lineup contains a long time juicer, major league cheater, and all-time scumbag, one who has tainted the recent achievements of Boston Red Sox and now stands ready to do the same for LA – LA’s own version of Barry Bonds.

  29. bluecrewgirl

It would have been nice to pick up a starter, but not for giving up anyone on the starting roster or cleaning out their prospects. I think Sherrill was an excellent pickup for what the Dodgers gave up. As far as the 5th starter is concerned, I’d personally much rather see Stults called back up than go with Schmidt. I was surprised he didn’t get called back up when his finger healed and I read the other day he’s won his last 4 starts in the minors.

  30. lbirken@aol.com

My goodness, there certainly is a lot more negativity and anger today after a much needed win than yesterday after a tough loss.

  31. cogopman

    The lineup should be:

    1. Hudsonl

    2. Martin

    3. Ramiez

    4. Blake

    5. Ethier

    6. Loney

    7. Kemp

    8. Pitcher

    9. Furcal

  32. brandondaughrity@hotmail.com

I only have ONE thing to say…. This team has the best record in baseball, they improved their bullpen, and have the same group that has led the way for the entire year. Teams go through rough patches, it happens… But you don’t keep the best record in the game for 4 months by doing things the wrong way…. Quit all of your griping about Torre, who cares what Manny did anymore, God knows everyone did, and Quit whining that we didnt get Halladay or Gonzo, or Bell… It didn’t happen… And last time I checked wait… how did I start this… We have the BEST RECORD IN BASEBALL AND A 7 GAME LEAD IN OUR DIVISION!! Now I haven’t posted in a while, but let me tell you, I’m sitck of the pissing and moaning!!

    GO BLUE!

  33. bluecrewgirl

I hope so, truebluewill. For some reason Joe doesn’t give Stults much of chance to prove himself when he get’s called up. I think he’d definitely give more than what Schmidt can right now. I am glad the trade deadline has passed. It’s more about rumors that never come to fruition than actual deals. I think Rosenthal is right with his “hot tips” about 1% of the time.

  34. truebluewill

Has anyone noticed that since Juan Pierre started against the
Astros on 7/18 the two other times he has started since then have been to replace Manny because of his hand injury. As his production continues to wane I don’t think he’ll be playing twice a week. I think the bloom is coming off the rose for Joe.

I like tonight’s lineup, but would like to see Kemp batting 5th.

  35. northstateblues

I’m happy that I woke up today to see all that Ned did was send Circus Vargas outta town for a C/1B prospect. No Panicky Ned this year, good enough for me. Halladay would’ve cost the farm and probably a chunk of Major Leaguers. Lee… well, maybe we could’ve gotten him… but I hate pitcher deals, they can blow up in your face so easily…

imagine if we made a trade like 7/31/04 today, only to have the starting pitcher in the trade sitting out most of the rest of the year with elbow problems, and a huge (albeit roided, but hindsight = 20/20) chunk of our team gone.

I know Ned failed at getting us a quality starting pitcher, but hey, almost everyone else’s SP/BP stinks as much or worse than us. Sure, the Giants’ pitching is better, but their offensive savior is Garko.

I’m glad the deadline is over.

  36. northstateblues

And why do I have the feeling that if we were going to get an SP, it was going to be Bronson Arroyo, in which case I’m glad that didn’t go through. Or imagine waking up this morning to the news that we’ve gotten Aaron Harang :: shivers ::.

    Yikes.

Logan White for GM in 2010

  37. lbirken@aol.com

NSB, right on as usual. My guess is most teams struggle when it is time to use a “5th” starter. Yes, all teams need pitching but the Dodger’s problems in St. Louis had as much to do with an inability to score runs (i.e. get an extra base hit at the right time) as the pitching breakdowns. Hopefully Atlanta will be a friendlier place.

  38. oldbrooklynfan

    Hi Everybody
Glad to get out of St. Louis, it was rough, I hope we have a better time in Atlanta (I feel like I’m still traveling, ha).
The big thing will be Schmidt, how he goes and I hope we can handle this guy Tommy Hanson.
I wonder if MLB.TV will let us hear Colletti.
    Well here we go.

  39. bluecrewgirl

I think the bp will be on the upswing with Sherrill and a healthy Kuo looking great so far since he came back (crossing fingers it will stay that way). If Belisario and Wade can come back healthy and McDonald continues to grow into his role as a reliever, we could do a lot worse. Plus, Weaver has been pretty solid overall and I’m happy to see that. Broxton hasn’t looked quite himself the last few games, could be the toe acting up, but now we have Sherrill to use as a closer if Brox needs to miss a few days. I think Elbert will only get better. Overall, I think the bp is pretty solid now if the injured can come back and stay healthy.

  40. aeversw

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Padres almost dealt Heath Bell and Adrian Gonzalez to the Dodgers for James Loney, Russell Martin, Blake DeWitt, James McDonald and Ivan Dejesus. Wow.

wow indeed. I don’t know what to think of that.

  41. enchantedbeaver

    The Good:
    .
    Ethier
    Nomar I
    Manny I
    Lofton
    Blake II
    Mota (barely)
    Saito

    The Bad:
    .
    Gonzo
    Nomar II
    Manny II
    Sao
    Hall
    Milton
    Furcal II
    Hillenbrand
    Vargas
    Lieberthal
    Proctor
    Berroa

    The Ugly:
    .
    Sweeney
    Pierre
    Loretta
    Bombko
    Lurch
    Baez
    Carter
    Schmidt
    Lugo
    Mueller
    Bennett
    Bloaiza
    Falkenborg
    Sturtze

I know I’m forgetting a few here and there, but my point is, Ned: no judge of talent he.

The only noteble trade he made that turned out was Ethier, and I’m still convinced Beane thought he was making a steal. Manny fell in his lap. Blake cost us two good prospects and well, you know what we got for Navarro and Jackson. And no matter what other teams pay in prospects, there’s always the “Ned premium.”

I’m with Bear, Logan White is long overdue to be GM for the Ds. Without him, we’d have an entire team of hagged out vets.

Is that kind of harsh put Vargas in the bad group and Mueller not his fault he got hurt in ending his career. Wow I guess Peavy wanted to go to the White Sox this team I wonder what change his mind this time?

  44. trublu4ever

aeversw ~ I thought that about the time also but, it doesn’t work that way all the time. I’ve done the change and it works for a while and then it doesn’t. I think mlb.’s time is off and that is what causes the problem.

  45. messagebear@msn.com

aeversw, the only real loss in that assemblage would have been Loney. Too bad the deal didn’t go through. We surely could have used the power.

  46. aeversw

MY only question about the deal is who would have caught? Maybe if we didn’t trade Carlos Santana for the Bearded One this deal would have gone through. A pen with Bell/Sherrill/Brox and a lineup with dre/manny/agone/bison would have been nice through.

  47. aeversw

I also just realized why the post are all thrown off. They are posted at the time set on your computer. SO since we all probably have different times set on our computers the post won’t be in order. I posted at 4:44 and my post ended up 3rd from the bottom. THen I changed it to 4:54 and it posted right after bears post at 4:53 even though its only 4:49…I hope thats not confusing…

  48. messagebear@msn.com

I think that Ausmus could have caught perfectly well two or three games a week for the rest of this season. If we had insisted, I think we could have got whoever the Padres catcher happens to be as part of the deal. Couldn’t have been too much of a trade-off compared to Martin, and, in any case, bringing up Ellis would not be much of a loss. It’s too bad it didn’t go through, although I like Loney. He’s an RBI man. Martin is just an ex-steroid wussy and worthless in the long run.

  49. lbirken@aol.com

Hard to believe the Padres would have made such a deal in their own division but then again, the Pads seem to have given up on trying to win.

  50. lbirken@aol.com

Bear, so you think Martin was a PED user. Funny thing about that is the knock on him the past two seasons is his lack of production in the second half. If in fact he was using, he should demand his money back because whatever he might have been taking did not do much good if you accept the main reason for using is to gain strength and endurance and to recover from the day to day grind on one’s body.

  51. shad80

I still can’t believe the Red Sox made that trade for Kotchman after they just got LaRoche and now he’s back with the Braves again

  52. messagebear@msn.com

I only go by something intimated on espn that two of our current players have been users. One of them pretty much indicated Schmidt for recovery purposes, and I can almost understand that; the other was probably Martin using when he first came up. He’s obviously given it up, and that may explain his sudden deterioration in performance over the last couple of years, especially in power.

  53. lbirken@aol.com

The key is we don’t know for sure and everyone is suspect. Heck, sometimes I think half the people on this blog is on something.

  54. kpookiemon

That Padres trade would have been pure whack-o! Just comparing Loney and Gonzalez, the payoff window is home plate (rbis and runs scored)…not batting average or home runs. Surprise. Loney has 4 MORE rbis than Gonzalez and has scored only 9 fewer runs. Granted, no one pitches to Gonzalez these days, but Loney isn’t exactly a scrub…and then to throw in Martin, DeWitt, et al for a journeyman reliever like Bell? No thanks.

  55. messagebear@msn.com

Hey, birk you got that right. I’ve had two vodka gimlets so far, and the night is still young.

  56. trublu4ever

lbirken ~ I’m on something! As of right now, it is No-Doz…..theis game so far is a real yawner and Rick and Charlie are putting me to sleep!

  57. messagebear@msn.com

TruBlu, you ought to try what I’m on – it will still put you to sleep, but you’ll be happy no matter what the score, or who’s pitching how.

  58. enchantedbeaver

Its all smoke and mirrors, but that’s 4 more shutout innings than I thought we’d see from Schmidt.

  59. truebluewill

Wow! 4 shutout innings for Schmidty. How long can this go on? He’s doing it with smoke and mirrors.

  60. lbirken@aol.com

Just wondering but has a Dodger hit a home run since Manny’s pinch hit bone chilling grand slam last week?

  61. lbirken@aol.com

Bear, you really should see somebody about your fascination with Manny. It just is not healthy!

  62. lbirken@aol.com

George Friederich Sherrill (born April 19, 1977, in Memphis, Tennessee), also known as “The Brim Reaper”, “Flat Breezy”, and “Duckbill” (all due to the fact that he keeps the brim of his hat very flat while he plays), is a Major League Baseball relief pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

I don’t know about Maddox, oldbrooklyn – I’m just glad he didn’t look like Schit. A very good performance actually and deserving another start down the road.

  85. enchantedbeaver

Very nicely done boys. I never thought “shutout” with Schmidt starting.

So JMac – is his future as a starter or reliever?

  86. rx.xc.ka@gmail.com

What’s up with not using Elbert? I mean I know there is a lot more experience in the pen, but they rushed to bring him up yesterday and haven’t used him in the two games he has been with them. Also, after looking at the transactions, he was recalled yesterday and called up today, is there a difference?

Great game by Schmidt, Sherill, and McDonald. Troncoso must be worn out. And how about Ethier, he looks to have gotten his swing back, now where is Manny’s…

  87. truebluewill

A very good game overall. Great starting pitching and excellent bullpen work. Also great to see them rack up the hits with power.

  88. shad80

I’d take that back they did bring up again but what the big deal? Calm down on Elbert geez. He probably help us in other way.

  89. enchantedbeaver

They’re doing Elbert a disservice by having him on the team. He should be pitching regularly in Albuquerque. They should be bringing DeWitt back up so at least we have a little pop off the bench.

  90. aeversw

Penny being a jerk turned my Jeff Weaver jersey into a Greg Maddux Jersey. So I was a little happy about that.

  91. aeversw

Shad, Maddux wore that number for 21 years. I’m sure if Brad offered it Maddux would have taken it….
“The fact that teammate Brad Penny has declined to relinquish No. 31 — the number that Maddux had worn throughout a 21-year career before joining the Dodgers on July 31 — has not rankled the newest member of the starting rotation.”

  92. cpompe1

Good evening ITD boys and girls!
Great game by Schmidtty tonight! And it’s REALLY nice to see Andre hitting like he’s on fire! Because he IS on fire! Oldbryooklynfan said it best, “Troncoso hasn’t looked good lately, maybe he needs a rest.” Yeah, I agree. Troncoso has been WAY overworked the first half of the season, he looks like he can use a good break from action. I’m just thrilled that Sherrill did well in his first Dodger outing tonight! With Sherrill I’m happy with the way our BP stacks up right now. Now, I like many would’ve liked a SP (and not necessarily Halladay). If Ned had offered a package to Toronto that they wanted in exchange for Halladay, I believe it would’ve been TOO much of a package, and none of us would’ve liked it I’m afraid. I thought that we’d go after Washburn (heck, who knows, we might have and the Tigers beat us to the punch), but if Schmidt keeps up pitching like tonight’s performance, maybe we don’t need another SP. Just a thought…

So how are my ITD friends tonight?

  93. cpompe1

Oh, and on your list BPB, do you know who you forgot on the “ugly” list? Da, da, da, da… Princess Andruw…

Oh, and shad, I like “The Brim Reaper” for Sherrill!!!

  94. cpompe1

Shad – I’ve gotta say, those nicknames for Sherrill were something different, huh? But hey, if it fits, that’s fine!

BCG – I’m doing fine; a lot of working, but not getting paid for it. Oh well, that’s fine. Sometimes there are more rewards volunteering! As for tonight’s game, I didn’t get to see the entire game either. Actually, I was at church volunteering (stuffing envelopes and such) and I didn’t see the game until the 3rd inning. I forgot about the replay. But I’ve got stuff around the house to do. But I saw the important stuff from the game! And yes, a sweep of the Braves would be nice after the series with the Cards. So how are you my friend?

  95. bluecrewgirl

Hey, CP! Hope you are doing well. What a nice surprise Schmidt’s performance was tonight. I honestly didn’t think he had it in him anymore, but he did a great job. I’m watching the replay on Prime because I didn’t see the whole game. I went to dinner with the friend and they had the game on in the bar, so I saw part of it. I saw Andre’s hr, but missed the double. Great game for him. A sweep of the Braves would be sweet after the frustrating series with the Cardinals.

  96. shad80

Wow what make for the Angels? This look like 33 comes from behind win for them and Philly still up 1-0.

  97. cpompe1

Did anyone notice at just after the trade “deadline” was over, that there was STILL a possibility of a Halladay trade? Yeah, a Halladay trade to the Angels. But it was nixed at the end; not sure which side nixed it, but it didn’t go thru…

  98. bluecrewgirl

I am good, CP. I’ve been working a lot of long hours, but making progress on some personal projects too, so it’s all good. I like hot weather, but it was getting a little too hot, even for me, so I’m glad it’s cooling down.

  99. cpompe1

BCG – I just noticed that my response to you came “before” your initial question!!! Ahhh, gotta love those time warps!!!

  100. cpompe1

And the Phils are ahead now 4 – 0. Go Phils! Never thought I’d EVER be saying that, but yeah, go Phils!

  101. cpompe1

BCG – I never got used to hot weather. I grew up in the SF Valley, and never got used to that concrete jungle. That’s why I’m THRILLED to be living in ahhh, soooo, coool Ventura!!!

  102. cpompe1

BCG – All of these time warps are doing a number on my fingers! I hope I don’t get carpel tunnel syndrome…

  103. nellyjune

Good early morning ITD readers and writers!! I am glad the trade deadline came and went. About last night’s game, three names come to mind….

    Jason Schmidt – fabulous job!!!!

Andre Ethier – WOW!!!!! Nothing more needs to be said 🙂

George Sherill – Welcome to the Dodgers!!!

    Way to go Dodgers!!!!!

  104. northstateblues

WARNING: Reading Bill Plaschke’s 8/1/09 article WILL rot your brain. Not like I need to tell some of you… but a friendly warning nonetheless.

Now if you excuse me, I have to go hunt for lost brains…

  105. truebluewill

Good morning ITDers. It’s a beautiful morning today especially after that great Dodger win last night. I feel there has been a change in the demeanor of the team since the dreadful St. Louis series. I think it has to do with the addition of Sherrill and the resurgence of Schmidt & Kuo. I hope Torre keeps using this new lineup. Either is going to really benefit from hitting in front of Manny.

Good Morning ITDland ~ Keep up the good work Dodger Blue! Looking forward to another great game today. Dodger Blue thru & thru!!!!!

  108. knouffbrock@frontiernet.net

Most of Plaschke’s stuff goes unread here, or if the by-line looks interesting I’ll get through half of it. Today’s, though, I thought was a good assessment of what happened the last couple of days even if you do not like his writing style. He is like some of the people I work with. He’s an idiot, just not all the time.
    *
So it’s true, well see what our starters are made of now. Schmidt was a pleasant surprise last night. I doubt we’ll see him much in the playoffs, but maybe he will help us get there.

  109. messagebear@msn.com

I resent the suggestion that Andre is benefitting by batting in front of Manny*roid. How many times has that actually happened. Last night his double was batting in front of Pierre. Yes, I wish that Andre could develop a better consistency and get his average back up to .300, where he seemed to belong. I will take a guy who leads the club in both home runs and RBI’s, and he has put those numbers together wherever he’s been put in the lineup. Besides, if you look at Manny*roid’s performance since his miracle slam, he’s regressing to a very normal level, and nobody should be particularly fearful of facing him. Believe me, I’d much rather be led to the NL championship and in the WS by guys like Andre, Matt, and Loney than someone who’s already tainted the accomplishments of one major league club and likely to do the same to our Dodgers if we need him to bring us to the post-season. I say, let the scum break down in his post steroid phase and let’s keep our good guys in mind as we surge forward.

  110. trublu4ever

It’s kind of nice that Joe has finally realized how good Andre can be. Now, if he would respect Matt the same way and move him up in the line-up a bit, we would be even better than we are right now.

  111. perumike

Good morning eveyone!!! It’s a great morning after last night’s win! Even with that bump in the road, we are now back to 25 games above .500! Let’s hope our guys are patient and can hit some grounders through the infield against Lowe! I’ll be driving to school when the game starts so I won’t be on here at all during the game, but I hope you all enjoy the game!

  112. jesse_from_sc

Heading to turner field now… Wow lots of blue as usual!!! At least these fans seem pretty docile, let’s see what happens we start kicking lowes tail!!!

  113. enchantedbeaver

Martin just plain pisses me off anymore. I’m starting to get the same disdain for him as I have for JP.

  114. messagebear@msn.com

Well, since some of us know JP as PP, Martin pretty much reminds me of BM anymore to put it politely.

  115. enchantedbeaver

And let’s face it. Wolf just isn’t a winner. Best thing you can say about him is that he eats a few innings.

  116. shad80

I don’t know how they can booed Manny didn’t the Braves have some ped user also lol. Ethierrrrrrrrrrrr

  117. Dodger4life

    I disagree…….. WOLF IS A WINNER!!!!!
    .
He ain’t an ace…….But with some run support…… he is the best we’ve had this season. How much support have the boy’s given him???
    .
    LETS GO DODGERS, LETS GO!!!!!!
BRING THE RING TO L.A. IN 2009!!!!!!

  119. knouffbrock@frontiernet.net

I think Wolf is a good pitcher. He almost always gives you a chance to win. Between the umpire and the error he should be ahead.

  120. Dodger4life

Wolf just keeps coming out giving his best, most people would of been frustrated and given in by now. Run support and another inning or two and he is the man.

  121. shad80

The dodgers should still be up 3-2 if Martin didn’t make that error cost the team 2 runs and also cost Ethier another assists.

  122. enchantedbeaver

Shad – Martin’s error just put a guy on second. Wolf gave up a double to a guy hitting under a buck fifty, then another hit after that. Those runs score regardless of Martin’s error.

  123. enchantedbeaver

Martin’s a whole nother story. Hopefully we dump his sorry *** after this season. But pin that loss squarely on Wolf. He couldn’t get either one of 2 less than .150 hitters out with two outs in the inning.

  124. enchantedbeaver

    BINGO Bear.

I’m not saying he doesn’t give his best effort everytime out, he does. Its just that he can rarely seem to find a way to win.

  125. shad80

The Braves official scoring suck Martin should had 2 errors and Woilf should’ve gave up 2 unearned runsw.

  126. shad80

The Braves official scoring suck Martin should had 2 errors and Wolf should’ve gave up 2 unearned runs.

  127. caligreen

I dont know why martin thinks hes yadier molina, throwing to first all the time, it’s one thing if he got runners out but his numbers are pathetic when he trys to throw runners out. Joe needs to tell his dum*** that when the game is close to just focus on calling the game and blocking the wild pitches.

  128. enchantedbeaver

I really don’t care what we have as a catcher next year as long as it isn’t Martin. Can’t hit. Can’t throw. (sound like someone else we know?) He’ll go right along with another year of JP and post-steroid Manny.

I really hope they don’t resign Wolf either. I’d rather take my chances with McDonald, Elbert or Lindblom.

  129. sammieramirez99

Hello ITD! iojwsngijswngopuwangopjsngonwgasegfsiuegbawiuegbiwagebiwbegw WTTTTFFFFFF!!!! im sure everyones already discussed martins brain fart! y the FFFF does this foo always try to do that pick off @ 1st! wtf is martin thinking! wowwww unbeleivably FING retarded!! and y the F was Loney so nonchalant on martins throw?! i MEAN F.U.C cmon block that ball! and then it gets worse when martins garbage/useless *** doesnt catch the perfect trhow from ethier to throw out slow motion laroche!!!

  130. truebluewill

I’d really thought we’d win this game. The sixth inning killed us. To win this series they’re going to have to beat a tough pitcher tomorrow.

  131. sammieramirez99

brown paper bag…wolf isnt a winner?! innings eater?! are u watching the same team? wolf should be around 10+ wins…

  132. sammieramirez99

brownpaperbag idk what uyr talking about but the hit after martins error was not a double!! idk what game u were watching but ethier made a perfect throw to the plate and that allowed the runner to advance!

  133. sammieramirez99

brown paperbag idk what ur talkin bout…batting avg and all that stuff does not matter when thes in the balance

  134. kpookiemon

enchanted…I’m with you. Wolf is NOT a winner. No way in hell I let him get close to a start in the playoffs. I am sick to death of hearing what a “tough luck” pitcher he is. BULLS**T. The king of coulda, shoulda, woulda. Every time this guy faces a crisis point in a game—IMPLODE. I think the reason I can’t hang with him is that HE doesn’t believe, deep down, that he can make a difference, that he can get the best major league hitters out come crunch time. And for all you stat freaks out there, the only two pitchers on this staff to have started a game and be under .500 are Kuroda (DL for two months) and our hero, Wolf. Milton, Weaver, Schmidt, Stults, McDonald…all over .500. The old saying alppies…he’s good enough to have Joe hand him the ball every fifth day, and bad enough to lose.

  135. enchantedbeaver

Bottomline dodgerway – how many wins DOES Wolf have? Coulda, shoulda, woulda, doesn’t. Bottom line II – regardless of the poor defense, he gave up two hits to guys that weren’t even hiting a buck fifty at the time. And I DO think you can judge a hitter being pisspoor by a .150 average.

And no I wasn’t watching the game – I was halfassed keeping track on gameday.

And that’s MR. brownpaperbag to you!!

  136. kpookiemon

Speaking of Wolf, in the 3rd inning, when he had that 2-2 pitch NOT called strike three to Chipper, how many on this blog thought he’d get Jones out? Really? Not me! Just a hard luck pitcher, huh? Umps fault, huh?

  137. shad80

Atlanta – Bottom of 6th SCORE
Randy Wolf pitching for Los Angeles LAD ATL
    M Diaz struck out swinging. 3 2
A LaRoche singled to right center. 3 2
    D Ross struck out swinging. 3 2
A LaRoche safe at second on throwing error by catcher R Martin. 3 2
D Hernandez singled to right, A LaRoche scored, D Hernandez to second advancing on throw. 3 3
    G Norton hit for D Lowe. 3 3
G Norton singled to left, D Hernandez scored. 3 4
    N McLouth struck out swinging. 3 4

LaRoche should’ve been out if Martin caught that ball from Ethier plain and simple and we would still be up 3-2. To bad the Braves official scorer didn’t credited him with a 2nd errors.

  138. sammieramirez99

and because u watched it on gameday u cant really see what play it was…watch the game or the replay and ull see why this game was not lost bny wolf but martin@!

  139. kpookiemon

I’ll change my screen name to “TradeWolf.” Anybody in here think Wolf was going to get Chipper out in the 3rd inning after the ump blew that 2-2 pitch–which should have been strike three? Not me. Ump’s fault, though, huh? Tough luck pitcher, huh?

  140. enchantedbeaver

Have to go onto the mlb.com site and click on my account. As long as you’re signed in it should take you right to a screen where you can change your nickname.

  141. trublu4ever

At least Joe is sort of listening to us about the lineup! I do feel kind of sick that we lost the game today. We should have won it……we had Lowe in trouble and should have kept the lead when we had it.

  142. sammieramirez99

nice thanks bpb! but cmon i like wolf and hes been our best pitcher outside of kershaws second half cy young pitching! just look at his ERA…sub 3.5 is not that bad

  143. enchantedbeaver

I agree with you Kahli – don’t want Wolf handed the ball as one of the starters come playoff time.

  144. sammieramirez99

ONE last point about todays game…ive been saying this all year and the dodgers have been choking the majority of the time! Furthermore, how HUGE was that SAC FLY opportunity in the top of the 4th with runners on 1st and 3rd w/ 1 out…and MATT KEMP striking out! I still ebelive that in order for our team and any other team to go deep into the playoffs we need to manafacture those runs w men on 3rd w/ o or 1 outs!

  145. shad80

I guess with that Sanchez trade that Young going to play everyday. Good to see him getting time there than here.

  146. sammieramirez99

brown paper bag! a pitchers W-L is often a huge misconception for how good or bad a pitcher is! now you can pitch lights out giving up maybe a run a game or maybe two or three BUTTTTT if your offense doesnt put up for you your not gonna win! and im positive that you know this with DLOWE last year! Randy Wolf is this years DLOWE! and DLOWE is a great playoff pitcher! u cant say anything about Wolf and playoffs cause he hasnt been there! and thats not cause hes a bad pitcher…look at roy halladay(never pitched in the playoffs)

  147. enchantedbeaver

And the fact that Wolf is one of the top three starters on this team doesn’t say much for the rest of them. Thing is, when its Wolf’s turn to pitch, I don’t expect him to win. Whether its all his fault or none of his fault, I just don’t ever expect to see a W after his name in the boxscore.

  148. sammieramirez99

lets take a look at a few of wolfs games that doesnt show on his RECORD which is what the majority of fans look at when considering a SP! before doing that the only games where wolf has absolutely exploded was against a strong phillies and whitesox lineup and 1 pitch to justin upton! now every other start hes put us in positioon to win! These are just a number of games where wolf has pitched far more than what i expected! his last start against the card 6in 2er…ill take that anytime just happened to be the day the offense hit into 5 gidp..ummmmmm this is not as impressive but 6in 1er aaginst the nats the game where manny was suspended the pen blew it for him! ummm against a strong texas team 5ip 0er 2 hits the game was rain delayed and he didnt come out to pitch and he was at 67 pitches which is efficient! ummmmmm aaginst oakland when they had carbrea and holiday 6ip 1er wade blows the lead! ummmm and even the start against the astros right after the all star break 6ip 3er which is a quality start but we were facing wandy rodriquez an obvious ace and in a lot of games whoever scores first wins and dont forget that we had ummmmm what 2nd and 3rd no outs to at least tie it up and yea enough said! Randy wolf is our 3rd or 4th starter in the playoffs! i just mentioned a few games that heee…and let me be clear not SHOULD OF won but did WIN. u can be the best picther and the pen can blow it for u so analyze wolfs starts then just looking at his W-L. bills is 10-6 wolf is 5-6 and ill tell u right now wolf has been the better pitcher this year by far!

  149. enchantedbeaver

But you see Sammie, with Wolf its ALWAYS something. And I’m not talking strictly wins and losses. Winners don’t give leads right back. Winners overcome blunders by the defense. Winners don’t let 2 consecutive .150 hitters get hits to beat them. In otherwords, winners find a way to come out on top.

I’m not saying Wolf is a horribly bad pitcher. He’s just not a winner in my book. If he was our teams #5 starter, then he’s tollerable. But as one of the top 3, uh-uh, and I really don’t want them to hand him the ball come playoff time. I have much more faith in Kuroda coming up big.

  150. boblee4014

Had company all day and just got to watch the game I taped earlier. I’ve come to the conclusion that Martin is the poorest excuse for a catcher that I’ve seen in a long time. He can’t throw, he can’t catch. Too many balls get away from him and he obviously can’t hit worth a crap. time to trade his sorry A** somewhere else. He alone cost us this game today. He’s worth less than Pierre if that could be possible.

  151. kpookiemon

“It just comes down to I have to do a better job,” Wolf said. “It was as simple as that.” Bottle it. Seems he says something similar every time he doesn’t win, which is a lot, seeing as how he’s won a staggering 5 games into August.

  152. kpookiemon

I, too, just to be a masochist, watched the replay of the 6th inning. It took Randy Wolf exactly TWO pitches from Martin’s crummy throw to lose the game. So much for picking up your teammate, though with Martin this season, one would need a forklift to pick up his sorry game.

  153. trublu4ever

Rockies won and the Giants are probably going to win….a game closer to us because we lost a game we shouldn’t have lost!!!!!!!

  154. enchantedbeaver

I guess that’s what it boils down to for me Kahli – Wolf never seems to rise to the occasion. When you’re a winner you rise to the occasion against the other team’s ace, or great hitter, or against a great team, or to pick-up a teammate. I don’t deny the bully let a few Ws slip away for him but by the same token, Wolf couldn’t go deep enough in the game to where the bully didn’t need to go 2-3 innings trying to protect a lead.

Wolf is a lot like JP in that respect – you get what you get. Doesn’t change, doesn’t step up a level. When JP bats you know he’s going to slap it somewhere. Doesn’t matter if he’s supposed to move a runner over, doesn’t matter if working a walk would be just as good as a hit. He just slaps it and it goes where it goes. Wolf’s like that. He gives you what he’s going to give you no matter the competition or game situation.

  155. sammieramirez99

brown paper bag…did u even read my analysis of some of wolfs starts?! i mean it boggles my mind when you’re clearly looking at wolfs W-L!

  156. sammieramirez99

what are u talking about wolf not rising to the occasion?! ummm shut down a solid cubs offense not to mention shuting out the phils on the ROAD…ummmm going head to head with roy oswalt early in the year only for bellisario to give up a hanging 2seamer to berkman…wolf has been our most consistent starter outside of kershaws past 11 starts!

  157. sammieramirez99

BROWN paper bag what are u talking about winners? are u even a dodger fan? 2 or 3 innings for the BP is not bad at all…i dont expect WOLF to go 7+ innings because hitters will adjust and he doesnt have overpowering stuff like you do in the pen w guys like bellisario, tronscosco, broxton. if its a save situation u have to trust your pen! 6 innings giving up 3 runs or less is a QUALITY START! often pitchers dont go into the 7th not cause they cant but because of “PITCH COUNT” and when you’ve thrown over 90 or so pitches your not as effective as you were earlier int he innings! and Kalih it didnt take just MARTINS crummy throw!!! DID U EVEN WATCH THE GAME? wowwwww martin could of preserved the W for Wolf if he catches the ball cause laroche was beat by a mile! and Bronwpaperbag your point about wolf giving up the hit to a 150 batting avg guy is really ludicrous! i checked to see who the player was and hes a rookie with 80 ABS so his 150 batting avg is not really an indication of the hitter he is…its another story when you have a SOLID 150 batting avg like say umm ANDRUW FATBOY JONES but event hat hit should not have scored! this game was lost by russell martin and Kalih when you quote sutff that WOLF says like “it justs comes down to blah blah blah”…does he really mean that…i really think he feels like WWWWTTTTFFFFFF! and u know what WWWTTTFFFF happens in baseball!

  158. kpookiemon

Sammie, I respect and applaud your admiration for Randy Wolf. Looking at Wolf’s 162-game average for his career, he is a very pedestrian 12-11 with an era over 4. Like Mr. brownpaperbag said, Wolf isn’t a horrible pitcher, simply a utility lefty who Ned secured for the Dodgers’ championship run…along with the likes of Estes (“retired”), Milton (DL), Weaver, and Vargas (traded). For me, he has been a major disappointment, along with J. Martin. The Dodgers have been spinning their wheels for a long while now, not nearly the dominant team of April and May. For Wolf to be under .500 in August, on a team with the best record in baseball, is horrible, plain and simple. Torre kept saying last season that the Dodgers couldn’t succeed without Andruw coming around. Glad he was wrong…but Manny had a lot to do with that. This season, if J. Martin and Wolf can’t step it up, this team is in big, big trouble. They both seem to be regressing, not improving.

  159. kpookiemon

Of course not, sammie. That crack about Milton and Estes was more an indictment of Ned. But if this 2009 Dodgers team wants to get to the promised land, all the excuse-making for Wolf isn’t going to get it done. The guy has not stepped up. Now Clayton Kershaw, last Wednesday in St. Louis, that is my definition of stepping up. George Sherrill yesterday in relief, that is my definition of stepping up. Andre Ethier, time and time again, that is my definition of stepping up. Randy Wolf hasn’t done anything to hurt the team…but he hasn’t done a damn thing to help it reach the next level…in my humble opinion.

  160. sammieramirez99

but fo reals our team is built for the postseason and i know you might disagree with me cause your worried about our SP but look at the possibilties…if BILLS can give us his 6or7innings 2er-3er which is what hes been doing during his WINS and if KERSHAW can continue to pitch like a CY YOUNG winner and if WOLF can give his usual quality start of 6in3er<or less and if KURODA is on point (unever know how good he can be) thennnn our stenght is our bullpen! and with the additions of both KUO and SHERRILL we have the deepest and most effective pen in the league and thats why we will go deep into the playoffs!

sammie, I DO love your optimism. But Torre scares me when it comes to the pitching staff. He coddles the starters and absolutely hammers the bullpen. The bullpen DL list is already a horror story 2/3 of the way through the season. Torre has overworked Kuo, Belisario and Wade (sore arms all) and Troncoso seems to be on fumes lately. I would be ecstatic if Kuo dominated late into October…but I fear he’ll break down again. All these guys with brittle arms are suspect. Yes, I’ll agree with you…if Belisario, Mota, Troncoso, Wade, Kuo, Weaver, Sherrill and Broxton are all HEALTHY, then look out! But I have to be a realist.

  162. kpookiemon

sammie, you’re right, you probably feel Bills has been a bust while I feel Wolf has been. But then, I prefer the Beatles to the Stones, while a million others prefer Mick. C’est la vie!

  163. sammieramirez99

Kalih so you dont sonsider going into philly and going 6ip1er stepping up? or going into chicago and going 7ip1er against the cubs and setting the tones for the series stepping up? and dude even his last start against the cards 6ip2er is stepping up! idk i just have to back him up cause i think every player on the team has contributed to our 64 wins so far…if your talking about guys that arent stepping up theres only 2! 1 on offense and 1 in our rotation! in other words MARTIN and BILLS! i was a huge bills supporter and i wanted him to contend for the CY young but honestly wolf has stepped up a lot more than BILLS. i think i feel the way u do about wolf about bills!

Good Evening ITD readers and writers!!!!!

Well, I did get to listen to the entire game in the car on the way home from So-Cal (Rick and Charlie). It was a great game until THAT inning, which I am sure has been talked about over and over again.

Randy Wolf – He had his moments, but the good moments kind of got overshawdowed by two hits by batters with averages below the Mendoza line.

Russell Martin – The throw to first was unacceptable, and then dropping the perfect throw by Ethier didn’t help his situation at all.

Andre Ethier – Wow!!! again 🙂

Kuo and Mota – not bad at all!! Kuo just needs to stay healthy.

  165. sammieramirez99

KALIH lets be real and not even consider WADE as an option in our pen haha the scouting report is out on this guy so he will not be as effective as last year! and i think KUO will be fine because i beleive the dodgers did the right thing by setting him up on the KURODA plan…they shortened the season by not blowing out their arm in the meaningless games in april/may/june/maybejuly. from AUG and SEP KUo will be able to pitch and build arm strength! but with KUO and SHERRILL that lesesens the workload for BELLISARIO and thats KEY! as for TRONCOSCO’s arm being used to much….i wont even worry about him cause he wasnt even in consideration for the SU role early in the season! TRONCOSCO was in the mix for the SP…so hes kind of different.

  166. nellyjune

Once Again? What does that mean? This is my first post all day, and I haven’t read the thread. Give me a break!!!!

  167. nellyjune

    a portion of this comment………

I resent the suggestion that Andre is benefitting by batting in front of Manny*roid. How many times has that actually happened. Last night his double was batting in front of Pierre. Yes, I wish that Andre could develop a better consistency and get his average back up to .300, where he seemed to belong. I will take a guy who leads the club in both home runs and RBI’s, and he has put those numbers together wherever he’s been put in the lineup.

    By messagebear@msn.com on August 1, 2009 9:18 AM

Mr. Messagebear – I totally agree with you on the whole comment, but I didn’t want to copy the whole thing. I think it needed to be said again after today’s game because it wasn’t like Derek was afraid to pitch to Manny today, and it’s not like Manny is hitting at all right now. Andre doesn’t need Manny in this lineup to make him better. We all said during the off-season, Andre turning 27 this year was going to make his year a much better year, and it certainly is so far.

  168. nellyjune

As far as batting average, Juan Pierre’s is being tossed around like it still matters. When was the last time he has batted like a .314 batter (at least two months now). So, the opposite can be said for him. He will most likely end the season with an average over .300 because of his limited at-bats, and it will look very nice on his 2010 baseball card.

  169. Dodger4life

    Good disccussion tonight……
    .
    Hi Nelly 🙂
    .
Andre is the Man….he can hit in front of… or behind anyone.
    .
How many home runs does he have now…I lost track when I ran out of finger’s and toes.

  170. nellyjune

22, and yes, I went crazy in the car too, but not too crazy. I was driving. Plus, you know I had those pesky gnat fans in the car with me 🙂

  171. Dodger4life

Yes I know them…LOL!!! I see you had fun while you were away. Nascar tomorrow….GO GORDON!!!! Andre would agree with me ya know!!

  172. nellyjune

Well, yes, Andre is a Jeff Gordon fan, and it’s okay if he wins, just like when Jimmie wins. I don’t mind at all. However, I would like to see Denny win one.

  173. Dodger4life

I love Jimmy also…..however it would just put a feather in my cap…. if Gordon would dethrone him. I was reading somewhere today that Jimmy prepares for the Chase now in August. Him and his team are amazing. Denny is Cool!!!

  174. nellyjune

I wouldn’t doubt that for a second about Jimmie and Chad are working really hard right now getting ready for the Chase. I am thinking he is going to win his 4th.

  175. kpookiemon

Question for the night owls: WHAT IN HELL has happened to J. Martin? He’s a shadow of the player he once was, both offensively and defensively. Ned should have made a trade at the deadline to get the real Russell Martin back.

  176. dodgereric

    Greetings all!

I was just gonna cruise thru the posts tonight until I see that Junie spilled the beans. No worries, just a reminder to all to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Finding out that your heart is just fine is great, but spending 36 hours in a hospital sucks. And thanks to all for your prayers and good wishes, it’s humbling.

Just a little catchup and it’s time for bed.

I’m glad we got Sherrill, the way Torre blows through BP arms, we’re going to really need him.

I’d like to see a list of the guys we offered the Jays before I’ll say I’m glad we didn’t get Halladay. The Phils have an advantage on us now unless Billz finds himself again. And speaking of Billz, I hope he learned something in his last start. He was great while throwing strikes, bad when not.

I’d also like to see a list of the players we offered the Indians for Lee before I’ll say, “Nice try, Ned.”

Anyone who said we should trade Kershaw (and there were quite a few) should probably not talk much for a while.

I’ve enshrined enchanted’s obit for Lamb Chop. You are a gifted person, e. It’s too bad you’ve used your powers for evil…….

For those of you not watching, Ethier’s throw was in plenty of time, but it was not perfect. It was 5 feet up the line and Martin was caught on the short hop. It wasn’t an easy play, and a big leaguer probably should have made it. But have you ever tried to catch a hard throw on a short hop with a catcher’s mitt with a runner bearing down on you? Not easy. And that’s why he didn’t get an error.

Sammie, a .150 hitter is a .150 hitter until he does better. Wolf let 2 – .150 hitters beat him today. You need to own up to it. He has.

Jimmie Johnson is the Greatest Driver In NASCAR.

  177. sammieramirez99

Dodgereric…i really dont understand any of the 150 avg. argument???sooo basically your saying that if it was a idk 270 hitter, then its ok…a 300 hitter…see what im saying! i mean you can bat 150 and those hits within that batting avg are clutch hits and the outs are when the game is not in the balance! like a ryan howard! but reading from all the arguments against wolf…it just seems that a lot of Dodger fans (simply because we LOST) try to pick at something to make themselves feel better and i understand! its the 150 batting avg…u shouldnt even look at that! theres a reason why these guys are major leaguers if they werent capable of getting a clutch base hit then they wont even be there! like all of us…if MARTIN catches that ball at the plate and he was pretty darn close then i wouldnt even have to defend WOLF!

  178. messagebear@msn.com

Somewhere along the line our management keeps betting on the wrong horses. Sure, I’m glad that we at least wound up with Sherrill, but that is probably only because Ned didn’t have any competition for him. When I look at some of the other acquisitions, why did Lee go to the Phils instead of us? Except for the Ned premium that everybody expects, I don’t think that the kind of prospects Phila. gave up would have broken us to get a premium type pitcher for the post-season. Bigger than that, I’m looking at Holliday with the Cards. This guy would have made a perfect left fielder for the Dodgers, just the kind of guy you’d like to see playing along with Andre and Matt for years. Ah, you say but we already have a premier left fielder. Well, we do have one who obviously fits Frank’s promotional schemes, just like Barnum and Bailey had their acts to attract the crowd. I bet that at the end of the season, not even to mention next year, Holliday will prove to be a much worthier player on and off the field than the Manny*roid. Just watch the post-steroid degeneration at work, and, if you dare, laugh at Frank for what he brought us from Boston. Next time try the plague, Frank – it won’t be as expensive.

    .
Sammie, a .150 hitter is a .150 hitter. 80ABs isn’t far off from what Sweeney did last year and I think we all agree, he stunk. Hernandez may not hit that all of his career, but he certainly isn’t any better than that now. Norton’s a career .250 hitter on his last legs as a major leaguer much like Sweeney was last season.

I agree with Kahli – I admire your fervent defense of Wolf, but I just don’t agree. I don’t think Wolf’s a winner anymore than I think Billz is an ace. Both of them haven’t shown me enough to warrant it.

  180. trublu4ever

So glad to see that Dodgereric was back with us last night (early this morning). Also enjoyed the banter between Samie and the rest of the ITD Gang! That is what makes this blog so special.!
    .
I do wonder, as Dodgereric, asked who, if anybody was offered for Halladay and/or Lee.
    .
Let’s win this game today Dodger Blue. We will be on ESPN so we have to play well to make Miller and Morgan shut up!!!

  181. enchantedbeaver

And thank you for enshrining Lamb Chop (may she RIP.) Porky Pig and the Hamm’s Beer Bear are gone too, but I can’t remember what days they happened.

Funny they always seem to happen in threes…

I guess I found that person bday but guess rotowire was to last to updated his bday Birthdate:8/26/1985 .

  183. truebluewill

    Good morning all,
Rough loss yesterday. I was listening to the audio feed of the game. So this morning I watched the video of the play at the plate. It’s quite obvious if Martin holds on to the ball the runner is out. You can also say on the previous play after Martin’s error allowed the runner to advance, Wolf should have bore down and got that .150 hitter out. So, I guess both Martin and Wolf were at fault. A win today would give us a series win & salvage a 3-4 road trip.

Tb4, I would love to have Miller & Morgan silenced.

  184. nellyjune

Good Morning ITD readers and writers!!!!!

Dodgereric – When you speak, you speak well.

messagebear – I remember back when Andruw and JP were taking up outfield space, and Matt Holliday’s name came up on trade rumors last year, some blogger wanted him traded for Ethier. I argued and argued my points about their numbers and how replacing Matt Holliday for Andre really doesn’t help the outfield, but just makes it the same because you still had Andruw and JP stinking up the outfield. Knowing what we know now, having Holliday, Kemp and Ethier in the outfield would have been fabulous. Matt Holliday is just one happy guy right now. Plus, the A’s colors just didn’t look right on him.

  185. messagebear@msn.com

Indeed, Nelly – a trade of either Andre or Kemp would not have been good even for Holliday. He will be available another year from now when free agency becons. Maybe something to look forward to. It would be my favorite trio.

  186. kpookiemon

messagebear, be careful what you wish for in left field. One look at Matt Holiday leads me to believe he may have an acne problem on his back as well……

  187. cpompe1

Good afternoon ITD boys and girls!
Tough game yesterday. While I also think that Randy Wolf was a victim yesterday of the defense behind him (or lack thereof), I also think that Randy is a better pitcher than that and could and should go much deeper into games. By and large, he kept us in yesterday’s game, but at this time of year, EVERYONE has to step up their performance a notch or two. Kershaw in the last month or so is my definition of stepping up. I’m not concerned at all that the Gnats or Rox will catch up with us in the NL West standings, but I am concerned about how deep into the playoffs we’re going to go this year. Right now, I’ve got an awful feeling in the pit of my stomach that we will be the Chicago Cubs of 2008. Best record in the league (or in baseball) but we get knocked out in the first round. I don’t think we could get swept like we swept them last year, but I have got to see A LOT more consistency offensively and defensively before I feel satisfied going into the playoffs.

I have no clue about what’s going on with Russ. Even if I overlook his offensive shortcomings (and that is hard to overlook), his defense (and I’m not just talking about yesterday) has been suspect all year. I’m beginning to think that other teams are catching onto this and are running at will with him behind the plate because he bounces so many throws. I mean, I know most hear don’t want to see “Angel talk” on Inside the Dodgers, but just look at the Angels. We all know what kind of catcher Scioscia was during his playing days. Since my husband is an Angel lover, I see their games fairly often. Scioscia’s catchers, Napoli and Mathis, are terrific defensively (it’s just that Napoli is a much better offensive player). But what I see from them defensively, that is what I expect Russ to be defensively. I mean Russ used to be better than what he is showing. But wait, hey, what position did Russ’ manager play? Yeah, catcher. I’m not sure what kind of defensive catcher Torre was, but if it’s anything like Russ, than that doesn’t bode well for us…

  188. nellyjune

My concern with our SPs is the quality starts and how it will and is affecting the bullpen. I am somewhat forced to listen to or watch the gnats play often, and Cain and Linsecum are going well into 7 innings and beyond during every outing, and they aren’t winning their games by wide margins or runs either. Why isn’t that happening with us? It doesn’t seem to be a matter of saving their arms for the playoffs because Billz and Wolf, and even Kuroda, have a tendancy to have one inning where they seem to really lose it,usually somewhere between the 4-6th innings. I hope our SPs are thanking the bullpen day in and day out because if we lose our bullpen to the DL due to being overworked, we just might be toast. I went on a search to see how some of the pitchers our division are doing in getting in Quality Starts. I know we have the best record in baseball, but it’s mostly due to some timely hitting and our bullpen. However, it’s going to be our overall pitching that will take us into the playoffs and beyond.

  189. cpompe1

Nelly – That list of yours is very telling indeed. I am just so afraid what our postseason pitching will be like this year – for the reasons that you point out…

  190. cpompe1

And Nelly, don’t worry about “messing up again.” Plus, I don’t think the Pads have any pitcher that can compete with those pitchers you mention. I don’t think they have any pitchers that can compete with our pitchers. So how are you?

  191. nellyjune

CP – The fact that Billz closely matches up with Barry Zito in QS, and Barry Zito is the 3rd starter (and that is just because RJ is on the DL) for the gnats is kind of scary. Plus, nobody on our team has thrown a complete game yet. Chad and Hiroki have been the closest. That may be management and not necessarily them, but still…………….

  192. nellyjune

I am doing great!!! We just got back yesterday from vacation. We spent half the time in Vegas and half the time in Costa Mesa and the surrounding area. How are you?

  193. cpompe1

Yeah, right now the Gnats have a much better rotation than us. No, I didn’t want Ned to break up the young nucleus we have (and that includes all of them: Ethier, Loney, Kemp Billz, Kersh, et al) but it is just discouraging to say the least that not one of our pitchers CONSISTENTLY go deep into games. To me, I’m not nearly as concerned that we don’t have any complete games; a lot of that “credit” goes to Torre and how he manages his pitching staff (starters and relievers). And I’m not going to get into that right now. But it’s disconcerting to say the least that (1) Billz was lights out until mid June when he had a meltdown, to which he is only now barely starting to come back, (2) Kersh was not good early on but for the last month and a half has been pitching terrifically, and (3) Wolfy, like I said before, I think is a better pitcher than he has been showing and still can go much deeper into games. I’m worried about how our pitching as currently comprised will fare during the playoffs.

I forgot that you were on vacation! I’ve noticed that your name was missing for a while, but I didn’t really see how long you were off. I posted a little bit, but not much. As for me, it’s the same old, same old. I’m doing a lot of work; but nothing that I’m getting paid for. My volunteering at the hospital is going fine, as well as my work for church. Next week will be busy. Jim and I will pick up my mom and go to the game on Tuesday. She’s coming home with us and on Wednesday, the three of us will be going to the Ventura County Fair. Then she’ll sleep over Wednesday night and she and I will go to the game on Thursday. I’ll sleep over her place Thursday night and take her to a doctor’s appointment Friday morning.

  194. kpookiemon

Actually, the Dodgers DO have one complete game, and a shutout, to boot. The amazing Eric Stults, May 9, 8-0 at home vs. the Gnats!!!!!

  195. nellyjune

I have the same thinking about pitching, really. I am not too concerned about complete games. That is a management decision most of the time, anyway, but we need to get our pitchers going into and out of he 7th inning at least on a more consistent basis.

Wow, you do have a busy week!! Dodger baseball at the Ravine though. That will be nice. We had a great time. I posted while I was gone, but it was usually just one post late at night, other than Monday night.

  196. truebluewill

I’ve have the same concerns about the starting pitching as everyone else and don’t want us to be 2008 Cubs in this years playoff. I was thinking back to the 2002 Angels who didn’t have ace starting pitching but won the WS with a dominant bullpen. That was the year they brought up K-Rod and there bullpen dominated in the playoffs. For the most part gone are the days when starting pitchers like Koufax, Drysdale, & Gibson would win 3 World Series games and dominate. I feel most playoff games are won and lost in the bullpens. That’s why the addition of Sherrill & Kuo coming back helps. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that ours holds up.

  197. Dodger4life

Good afternoon ITD, Dodger Faithful and Our beloved Boy’s in Blue….

    BEAT THE BRAVES!!!!!

  198. trublu4ever

Well, the Giants just killed the Phillies’ Hamels! So, to me on any given day, we can also beat any pitcher out there, too. I, like the rest of you, am a bit concerned of how deep into the games our starters go. However, I think a lot of it as to do with Joe and his love of the bullpen! And, his obsession with having to get PP in there to keep him happy!

  199. enchantedbeaver

Tru, I’m going to be so bold as to say that right now, this team couldn’t beat the Giants in the playoffs.

  200. trublu4ever

You are probably right, bpb! I’m trying to be positive. We will find out alot about our team when we go to San Francisco next weekend. Both the Rockies and Giants won today so we had better step it up tonight.

  201. enchantedbeaver

I gotta be a realist Tru – the defense is down, the hitting with runners in scornig position is a atrocious, the starting pitching stinks other than Kersh, and we have absolutely no bench strength. The only thing we have going for us right now is a BP.

Hopefully the first 4 things will change for the better in the next two months and give us back the edge.

  202. shad80

Gosh 11/23 risp by Boston that game was a nightmare for the Orioles. I’d would love to see 18 runs and 22 hits tonight and Manny hit 3 homeruns with 7 to 8 rbi’s, Martin goes 3 for 7 with 2 homeruns and 5 rbi’s but I can dream can I? I see Philly lost to the Giants again and glad to see another NL west team beat the all mighty Philly. I winder what Phan have to say about that one.

  203. trublu4ever

I hope so too, BPB. This 20 game stretch will tell us alot about our character for sure. I am more worried about our lack of a bench than our starting pitching. The pitching can improve but our bench sucks. We have nobody to put in there with bases loaded who can hit oe out.

  204. shad80

Martin take notes on Martinez last 2 games.
AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB AVG
    08/02 @BAL W 18-10 6 1 5 1 0 0 4 0 0 0 .291
    08/01 @BAL W 4-0 5 1 1 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 .283

  205. nellyjune

Mr. BPB – The gnats all year have had nothing to lose. We are the ones who paid the big bucks for Manny, and we were supposed to be in a race for the division with the dbacks. So, until the games are played, it’s only on paper we look better, and that is just because of our lineup. However, Sandoval can hit a bomb just like Manny can (without the years behind him yet), and with Freddie Sanchez and Garko in the lineup now, their bats just got stronger, as well as their defense. So, the Dodgers have a lot to worry about when we play the gnats. Plus, we haven’t played at AT&T park since Manny came back from his suspension so the emotional level of those games will be higher than normal, and it’s usually bad as it is. However, one step at a time. Let’s get past this game and next week and let’s hope we can get enough of a lead on them and the Rox, that it won’t make too much of a difference for that series.

  206. enchantedbeaver

The only time we have a bench is when one of the regulars is “resting” (except Martin.) Monkeywhiskers is in Albuquerque taking some swings (6 for 18, 1HR), so maybe he can come back and provide a little pop. This is specifically why you can’t keep a guy like Pierre as the 4th OFer – no pop and his defense stinks. When you’ve got a bench of Pierre, Loretta, Castro and Ausmus, you might as well give up on ever seeing anything more than a single and one run at a time, if you’re lucky enough to even see that (as we’ve all witnessed time after time.)

  207. truebluewill

Tb4&BPB Let’s not panic. Remember up until 7/23 the Dodgers were playing .642 ball. You have to expect them to come back to earth a little. They just lost 6 out of 9, which is their worst slump of the year so far. Which isn’t that bad. I do wish we go back to 11 or 12 pitchers so we can have more bats coming off the bench. When is Doug Mientkiewicz going to be ready to play?

  208. nellyjune

truebluewill – They said right now Doug is just PHing, and once he takes the field and plays defense, then they will get him up to the big club. Rick and Charlie were talking about it yesterday on the pregame show.

  209. enchantedbeaver

Not panicing truebluewill, just being realistic. I may love the Dodgers, but I can see this team has some serious deficiencies that need to be taken care of. I believe they’ll make the playoffs, but as the team sits right now today, they’ll probably be out in the first round.

  210. truebluewill

Bpb This is still the same team that won all those games early and built up a big lead. I feel when October comes around they’ll kick it into gear and win when they have to.

  211. enchantedbeaver

Just once I’d like to see a strong hitter batting behind Kemp. Also nice to see Loretta can make 3-4 outs tonight instead of his usual 1.

  212. truebluewill

Just heard on the pre-game show Loretta is playing because Blake hurt his wrist working out with weights. They don’t know how serious it is and might not know until tomorrow. Sounds like day to day.

  213. shad80

Sigh another ala Pierre play with Furcal and hahahaha glad the Cubs blew it. Their fans were trashing the dodger board when we lost that series to the Cardinals saying that we screwed them.

  214. northstateblues

So is this what has befallen the mighty ITD: a wave of Dodgers Apologists? Sulking about how right now, the Giants could beat us in the postseason? It’s August. Right now, Mickey Mantle could beat our whole squad at a game of quarters held at the Sea of Tranquility, and that’s about as likely to happen as this 8/2/09 Dodgers team playing this 8/2/09 Giants team in a Playoff series on 8/2/09.

It saddens a bit to see the firery posters of ITD fizzeld out and sulking about how the Giants are better than us… Well, we have a little over a week and a weak homestand to get ready about it. I come here, and I expect to be riled up with the posts I read, whether I agree or disagree, not see fodder for the firey sleeping Giants egos.

At this time, the Dodgers might not be better than this, but ITD is.

You can’t hold a whole team responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn’t we blame the whole MLB? And if the whole MLB is guilty, then isn’t this an idictment of our Sports fan nation in general? And I put it to you, isn’t this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want, but I’m not going to sit here and listen to good people badmouth the United States of America.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s time to kick some Major League @$$!!!!

    Oh, say can you see…

  215. sammieramirez99

BPB sorry but your comparison with Sweeney is not valid for me! We all know Sweeney was completely garbage and thats why he retired! norton is still serviceable and the hernandez guy is a rookie with better and younger instincts! but whatevers new day new game.

  216. nellyjune

I will never say the gnats are better than us. However, is it bad to think I wanted them to beat the Phillies. I hate the Phillies right now more so than the gnats, and it more has to do with the east coast bias, and the media thinking that our division is weak. Well, the Phillies just got beat 3 games out of 4 against gnats, and we beat the Phillies as well. So, where is the weakness in our division? NL East division isn’t exactly tearing it up right now, are they? The Rox just took the series from the Mets as well.

  217. sammieramirez99

Almost every division in the league are pretty equal outside of the AL East! realitically the giants are a solid ball club and anything can happen down the stretch! one thing is clear…they have the rotation and we have the pen.our lineup is deeper so what im predicting is the dodgers winning games later in the innings when they face a team likke the giants!

  218. sammieramirez99

Joe Morgan is an idiot saying that bills throws adds a chanegup sometimes! i cant stand these ESPN guys that think they know the dodgers but they dont!

  219. nellyjune

northstateblues – Have you been watching “Animal House” lately? LOL!!!! Always a pleasure reading you sir 🙂

  220. nellyjune

sammie – I just want to scream listening to Jon Miller as well. All I think of are the gnats and it’s excruciating at times. He just seems a little too happy when things don’t go our way. ………and you are right, Joe Morgan is an idiot.

    All right Billz!!!!!!!

  221. sammieramirez99

Yea Nelly bills doesnt even have a chanegup and if he did wow he can like a halladay! i really think kershaws been better cause hes added the change

  222. northstateblues

I think they have discussed adding off-speed pitches with Bills, as opposed to going to the Fastball all the time when he’s in a rut. Because we’ve seen how that goes Bills’ last few starts.

  223. truebluewill

oldbrooklynfan Yes that is good the Dodgers are making him work. When are they going to get the big hit?

  224. sammieramirez99

dude **** STEVE philips…talkin bout the phils havin the best D and O in the NL! talk about dodger hater

  225. northstateblues

Don’t worry about Steve Phillips. If he knew what he was talking about, he’d be GMing still and not the poor pud who has to sit next to Joe Morgan.

  226. sammieramirez99

yeah that hyperesxtension looked a little nasty but i wouldnt be worried! ive hyperextended my knees like that before and different for me was i was jumping and did what bills did! bills was stationary and half of the momentum was going to his right leg…but yeah hopefully its nothing serious!

  227. sammieramirez99

im sure all of u noteced this…but bills is growing that playoff goatee and it made him look older and he pitched like e was older! haha it looks good makes him not look like a kid anymore

  228. sammieramirez99

wow once again the espn crew doesnt know what theyre talkin about. steve philips was tryin to act like he knows what hes talkin about with the dodgers and saying how they didnt streghten their rotation but rather their bullpen and he sayd that bellisarwio will come back and help which is true…and then he sayd CORY WADE coming back which is not true and philips just tryin to act like he knows our team! uhhh how about KUO coming back dumb boy phillips!

  229. shad80

    Elias Says…

DODGERS’ FIRST SHUTOUT WIN IN ATLANTA SINCE 1989

Jason Schmidt and three relievers held the Braves off the scoreboard as the Dodgers took the opener of their series in Atlanta, 5-0. Believe it or not, that was the Dodgers’ first shutout win in Atlanta in more than 20 years – since Ramon Martinez blanked the Braves (then managed by Russ Nixon), 7-0, on June 5, 1989. That span of 20 years, 56 days is the longest in National League history without a road shutout win by one team against another.

    Updated: August 1, 2009

Can we make it 2 in 3 nights?

  230. shad80

Bills was 0-2 against the Braves and Jurrjens was 2-0 against LA and look like both of those 0 would go away.

  231. oldbrooklynfan

I thought that Sherrill would stay in because of the left-handed batters coming up.
Well it’s good to see how Troncoso does tonight, anyway.

  232. truebluewill

oldbrooklynfan 9-1 I think it’s safe to say this one’s in the win column. I’m going to bed. Good night.

  233. oldbrooklynfan

All in all that was an excellent road trip of 3-4 against the likes of the Cardinals and the Braves.

  234. oldbrooklynfan

I for one will not pay any mind to any more names that are leaked.
As far as I can see it all happened in the past.

  235. kpookiemon

3-4 road trip…winners: Schmidt, McDonald, Billingsley…losers: Wolf, Billingsley, Weaver, Wolf. Just saying……………………..

  236. nellyjune

Wow!!! I was watching the game part of the time, listening to the game part of the time, and watching by phone part of the time. Cooking and so forth kind of happens around here occasionally. I forgot what it was like to be home. I have not had to cook for 7 days while on vacation.

What a great game that was. Matthew Ryan Kemp was awesome tonight, Billz was great, the rest of the lineup, including the new PHer, Jason Schmidt, did fabulous, and our bullpen once again sealing the deal and getting Billz his win was fantastic!!! Is there any word on Billz? I was soooo glad to see him get his form back and then to hear he got hurt was not fun at all.

  237. enchantedbeaver

Very nice game from the boys last night – great pitching, timely hitting – everything they hadn’t been doing lately. If Billz can string another 3-4 starts together like last night and they continue to hit good pitching, then I might start changing my mind about their chances in the playoffs. Get Kuroda onboard back to late ’08 levels and I’ll even give them good odds.

Speaking of which, hey folks I ruffle feathers now and then because I don’t toe the Dodgers’ Kool-Aid line – not everything they do goes without questioning. I (and a few others) shoot from the hip at what we see. So debate us fine, censure us no.

Damn that Kemp is starting to really grow. Give him another year and he’ll bring the excitement to the plate every AB that Manny does (for some) now. Now with he and Dre we have a couple of legitimate power threats in the everyday line-up.

  238. trublu4ever

BPB ~ You can “Ruffle My Feathers” any time! Shooting from the hip is what makes you Mr. Brownpaperbag and, I for one, am glad you do it.

  239. thinkingblue

    GOOD MORNING!
Where is JOSH…he hasn’t been here in a while.
    *
OH YEAH…Torre should try putting KEMP in front on MANNY. That would be amazing! Ethier is doing well infront of Manny.
    *
GREAT GAME last night! BILLZ was excellent.
    *
I’ll be cheering for our Boys tonight from actual DODGERS STADIUM. YEY! GOOOOOOO DODGERS!

  240. nellyjune

Good Morning ITD readers and writers!!!!!

Beav……………………. I mean enchanted……………………….. I mean brownpaperbag …………………..I mean Mr. Brownpaperbag …………………I mean O Great One :)))) You can shoot from the hip all you want.

  241. shad80

I was watching the sport report on the 10 o’clock news on Kcal I think and they said that his last win on the road was on June 14 when the Lakers was still in the playoff so basically on June 14 the Lakers won the championship and I’m so glad that string is broken now.
