Trade deadline passes…
Sherrill should be at the park today and Claudio Vargas got traded today, essentially to open up a spot in the ‘pen for George.
That’s all at this point…obviously trades can still be made when guys clear waivers, but it looks like we’re quiet for the rest of the day. Ned Colletti will be on air with Eric Collins and Steve Lyons tonight during the PRIME TICKET broadcast, so tune in early in the game to hear about all that went on down to the wire.

unbelievable Ned, thanks for nothing. The Dodgers arent gonna pass the first round of the playoffs. They dont have the starting pitching to go deep into the playoff. Bills was awefull last year during the playoffs. They have the talent why didnt they pull the trigger?

Looking forward to the first three Braves hitting the ball against the outfield wall, like in the first Schidtty start this year. Kinda like a softball game where the rules penalize you for too many home runs, so the hitters just want to smash the ball to the power alleys.

I really don’t know where this negativity is coming from. I think Ned’s done a good job this summer (and last summer, I might add). We got Sherrill for a couple prospects, which makes our bullpen Broxton, Sherrill, Belisario, Troncoso, Kuo, Mota, all having a combined ERA of 2.58. Bullpens win playoff series. The Blue Jays were simply asking too much for Halladay. That’s why NOBODY got him. It wasn’t worth it to swap Kershaw or Billingsley for Halladay. I’m sure it’s different people complaining, but I remember people even complaining that we traded sorry Andy LaRoche for Manny last year, and now we’re complaining that we didn’t unload enough? C’mon, guys, Ned did a good job. And next year is next year. We’ll think about this year, and I think we have a really good shot.

I’m glad we held onto guys like Lambo, Lindblom and E. Martin though. Ned’s shown us he has no talent in signing FAs so the only way we’ll ever have a consistantly decent team is through the young guys coming up.
Of course we need a manager that is “kid friendly” so they might actually develop at an accelerated pace rather than forced to bat 8th most of the time and retard that growth.

I’m glad that the trade is over, now our boys can concentrate. But yeah right…the deadline isn’t really til August who knows when. I think the trades should happen earlier in the season. I just don’t think it’s fair, let say that the trade for Loney happens…he is in the No. 1 team and has contributed to our wins (he is a spectacular 1st baseman), then he gets traded to the NLWest last place team. Poor LONEY. I honestly don’t think it’s fair…but that’s just me. I know we can get someone great in return. I guess I am thinking of the individual human’s feeling than the over come of the whole team. I’ll get over it.

I ‘m glad the trading deadline is over. I’m happy with what they did. Of course it would have been nice to get Haladay. I’m glad that Kersh & Bills didn’t get traded and the 25 man roster is still intact. I feel Sherrill is a good addition to the bullpen and they will probably add either another bullpen arm & maybe a starter in a wavier trade. Remember we still have a 7 game lead and are 24 games over .500. I think Ned and Joe should get some credit for that.
I think Loney’s a bit overrated. This guy will probably never be a power guy, and he’s slow. I thought he would be a .320-.330 guy, but he’s been hovering around .290 for two years now. Now, he is clutch, and I still like him, but I would’ve taken Adrian Gonzalez for him in a heartbeat.
Loney needs to walk more and hit more HR’s because, like most slow guys, he hits into a lot of double plays and that’s 2 outs at a time boys & girls.
With the trade deadline over and the Dodgers didn’t go for Starting pitching. Is there any quality starting Pitchers that will clear waivers by August 31st?

It would have been nice to pick up a starter, but not for giving up anyone on the starting roster or cleaning out their prospects. I think Sherrill was an excellent pickup for what the Dodgers gave up. As far as the 5th starter is concerned, I’d personally much rather see Stults called back up than go with Schmidt. I was surprised he didn’t get called back up when his finger healed and I read the other day he’s won his last 4 starts in the minors.
My goodness, there certainly is a lot more negativity and anger today after a much needed win than yesterday after a tough loss.
Geez that was a waste for the Red Sox why did they traded for LaRouch in the first place.

I hope so, truebluewill. For some reason Joe doesn’t give Stults much of chance to prove himself when he get’s called up. I think he’d definitely give more than what Schmidt can right now. I am glad the trade deadline has passed. It’s more about rumors that never come to fruition than actual deals. I think Rosenthal is right with his “hot tips” about 1% of the time.
Has anyone noticed that since Juan Pierre started against the
Astros on 7/18 the two other times he has started since then have been to replace Manny because of his hand injury. As his production continues to wane I don’t think he’ll be playing twice a week. I think the bloom is coming off the rose for Joe.
I like tonight’s lineup, but would like to see Kemp batting 5th.
I’m happy that I woke up today to see all that Ned did was send Circus Vargas outta town for a C/1B prospect. No Panicky Ned this year, good enough for me. Halladay would’ve cost the farm and probably a chunk of Major Leaguers. Lee… well, maybe we could’ve gotten him… but I hate pitcher deals, they can blow up in your face so easily…
imagine if we made a trade like 7/31/04 today, only to have the starting pitcher in the trade sitting out most of the rest of the year with elbow problems, and a huge (albeit roided, but hindsight = 20/20) chunk of our team gone.
I know Ned failed at getting us a quality starting pitcher, but hey, almost everyone else’s SP/BP stinks as much or worse than us. Sure, the Giants’ pitching is better, but their offensive savior is Garko.

Logan White for GM has been overdue for at least three years now.
NSB, right on as usual. My guess is most teams struggle when it is time to use a “5th” starter. Yes, all teams need pitching but the Dodger’s problems in St. Louis had as much to do with an inability to score runs (i.e. get an extra base hit at the right time) as the pitching breakdowns. Hopefully Atlanta will be a friendlier place.

I think the bp will be on the upswing with Sherrill and a healthy Kuo looking great so far since he came back (crossing fingers it will stay that way). If Belisario and Wade can come back healthy and McDonald continues to grow into his role as a reliever, we could do a lot worse. Plus, Weaver has been pretty solid overall and I’m happy to see that. Broxton hasn’t looked quite himself the last few games, could be the toe acting up, but now we have Sherrill to use as a closer if Brox needs to miss a few days. I think Elbert will only get better. Overall, I think the bp is pretty solid now if the injured can come back and stay healthy.
My bad, forgot to mention Troncoso and Mota. They have both been solid too.
Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Padres almost dealt Heath Bell and Adrian Gonzalez to the Dodgers for James Loney, Russell Martin, Blake DeWitt, James McDonald and Ivan Dejesus. Wow.

I’m with Bear, Logan White is long overdue to be GM for the Ds. Without him, we’d have an entire team of hagged out vets.

I think that Ausmus could have caught perfectly well two or three games a week for the rest of this season. If we had insisted, I think we could have got whoever the Padres catcher happens to be as part of the deal. Couldn’t have been too much of a trade-off compared to Martin, and, in any case, bringing up Ellis would not be much of a loss. It’s too bad it didn’t go through, although I like Loney. He’s an RBI man. Martin is just an ex-steroid wussy and worthless in the long run.
Hard to believe the Padres would have made such a deal in their own division but then again, the Pads seem to have given up on trying to win.
So far so with Schmidt. I do feel I’m walking on eggshells watching him pitch.
Bear, so you think Martin was a PED user. Funny thing about that is the knock on him the past two seasons is his lack of production in the second half. If in fact he was using, he should demand his money back because whatever he might have been taking did not do much good if you accept the main reason for using is to gain strength and endurance and to recover from the day to day grind on one’s body.

I only go by something intimated on espn that two of our current players have been users. One of them pretty much indicated Schmidt for recovery purposes, and I can almost understand that; the other was probably Martin using when he first came up. He’s obviously given it up, and that may explain his sudden deterioration in performance over the last couple of years, especially in power.

That Padres trade would have been pure whack-o! Just comparing Loney and Gonzalez, the payoff window is home plate (rbis and runs scored)…not batting average or home runs. Surprise. Loney has 4 MORE rbis than Gonzalez and has scored only 9 fewer runs. Granted, no one pitches to Gonzalez these days, but Loney isn’t exactly a scrub…and then to throw in Martin, DeWitt, et al for a journeyman reliever like Bell? No thanks.

Great game by Schmidtty tonight! And it’s REALLY nice to see Andre hitting like he’s on fire! Because he IS on fire! Oldbryooklynfan said it best, “Troncoso hasn’t looked good lately, maybe he needs a rest.” Yeah, I agree. Troncoso has been WAY overworked the first half of the season, he looks like he can use a good break from action. I’m just thrilled that Sherrill did well in his first Dodger outing tonight! With Sherrill I’m happy with the way our BP stacks up right now. Now, I like many would’ve liked a SP (and not necessarily Halladay). If Ned had offered a package to Toronto that they wanted in exchange for Halladay, I believe it would’ve been TOO much of a package, and none of us would’ve liked it I’m afraid. I thought that we’d go after Washburn (heck, who knows, we might have and the Tigers beat us to the punch), but if Schmidt keeps up pitching like tonight’s performance, maybe we don’t need another SP. Just a thought…

Today’s, though, I thought was a good assessment of what happened the last couple of days even if you do not like his writing style. He is like some of the people I work with. So it’s true, well see what our starters are made of now. Schmidt was a pleasant surprise last night. I doubt we’ll see him much in the playoffs, but maybe he will help us get there.
I resent the suggestion that Andre is benefitting by batting in front of Manny*roid. How many times has that actually happened. Last night his double was batting in front of Pierre. Yes, I wish that Andre could develop a better consistency and get his average back up to .300, where he seemed to belong. I will take a guy who leads the club in both home runs and RBI’s, and he has put those numbers together wherever he’s been put in the lineup. Besides, if you look at Manny*roid’s performance since his miracle slam, he’s regressing to a very normal level, and nobody should be particularly fearful of facing him. Believe me, I’d much rather be led to the NL championship and in the WS by guys like Andre, Matt, and Loney than someone who’s already tainted the accomplishments of one major league club and likely to do the same to our Dodgers if we need him to bring us to the post-season. I say, let the scum break down in his post steroid phase and let’s keep our good guys in mind as we surge forward.
Bear ~ You are right…..Andre will do well no matter where he bats! Just keep him in the line-up!
It’s kind of nice that Joe has finally realized how good Andre can be. Now, if he would respect Matt the same way and move him up in the line-up a bit, we would be even better than we are right now.

I think Wolf is a good pitcher. He almost always gives you a chance to win. Between the umpire and the error he should be ahead.

The king of coulda, shoulda, woulda. Every time this guy faces a crisis point in a game—IMPLODE. I think the reason I can’t hang with him is that HE doesn’t believe, deep down, that he can make a difference, that he can get the best major league hitters out come crunch time. And for all you stat freaks out there, the only two pitchers on this staff to have started a game and be under .500 are Kuroda (DL for two months) and our hero, Wolf. Milton, Weaver, Schmidt, Stults, McDonald…all over .500. The old saying alppies…he’s good enough to have Joe hand him the ball every fifth day, and bad enough to lose.

I still ebelive that in order for our team and any other team to go deep into the playoffs we need to manafacture those runs w men on 3rd w/ o or 1 outs!

brown paper bag! a pitchers W-L is often a huge misconception for how good or bad a pitcher is! now you can pitch lights out giving up maybe a run a game or maybe two or three BUTTTTT if your offense doesnt put up for you your not gonna win! and im positive that you know this with DLOWE last year! Randy Wolf is this years DLOWE! and DLOWE is a great playoff pitcher! u cant say anything about Wolf and playoffs cause he hasnt been there! and thats not cause hes a bad pitcher…look at roy halladay(never pitched in the playoffs)
And the fact that Wolf is one of the top three starters on this team doesn’t say much for the rest of them. Thing is, when its Wolf’s turn to pitch, I don’t expect him to win. Whether its all his fault or none of his fault, I just don’t ever expect to see a W after his name in the boxscore.
lets take a look at a few of wolfs games that doesnt show on his RECORD which is what the majority of fans look at when considering a SP! before doing that the only games where wolf has absolutely exploded was against a strong phillies and whitesox lineup and 1 pitch to justin upton! now every other start hes put us in positioon to win! These are just a number of games where wolf has pitched far more than what i expected! his last start against the card 6in 2er…ill take that anytime just happened to be the day the offense hit into 5 gidp..ummmmmm this is not as impressive but 6in 1er aaginst the nats the game where manny was suspended the pen blew it for him! ummm against a strong texas team 5ip 0er 2 hits the game was rain delayed and he didnt come out to pitch and he was at 67 pitches which is efficient! ummmmmm aaginst oakland when they had carbrea and holiday 6ip 1er wade blows the lead! ummmm and even the start against the astros right after the all star break 6ip 3er which is a quality start but we were facing wandy rodriquez an obvious ace and in a lot of games whoever scores first wins and dont forget that we had ummmmm what 2nd and 3rd no outs to at least tie it up and yea enough said! Randy wolf is our 3rd or 4th starter in the playoffs! i just mentioned a few games that heee…and let me be clear not SHOULD OF won but did WIN. u can be the best picther and the pen can blow it for u so analyze wolfs starts then just looking at his W-L. bills is 10-6 wolf is 5-6 and ill tell u right now wolf has been the better pitcher this year by far!
But you see Sammie, with Wolf its ALWAYS something. And I’m not talking strictly wins and losses. Winners don’t give leads right back. Winners overcome blunders by the defense. Winners don’t let 2 consecutive .150 hitters get hits to beat them. In otherwords, winners find a way to come out on top.
I’m not saying Wolf is a horribly bad pitcher. He’s just not a winner in my book. If he was our teams #5 starter, then he’s tollerable. But as one of the top 3, uh-uh, and I really don’t want them to hand him the ball come playoff time. I have much more faith in Kuroda coming up big.
Had company all day and just got to watch the game I taped earlier. I’ve come to the conclusion that Martin is the poorest excuse for a catcher that I’ve seen in a long time. He can’t throw, he can’t catch. Too many balls get away from him and he obviously can’t hit worth a crap. time to trade his sorry A** somewhere else. He alone cost us this game today. He’s worth less than Pierre if that could be possible.

I guess that’s what it boils down to for me Kahli – Wolf never seems to rise to the occasion. When you’re a winner you rise to the occasion against the other team’s ace, or great hitter, or against a great team, or to pick-up a teammate. I don’t deny the bully let a few Ws slip away for him but by the same token, Wolf couldn’t go deep enough in the game to where the bully didn’t need to go 2-3 innings trying to protect a lead.
Wolf is a lot like JP in that respect – you get what you get. Doesn’t change, doesn’t step up a level. When JP bats you know he’s going to slap it somewhere. Doesn’t matter if he’s supposed to move a runner over, doesn’t matter if working a walk would be just as good as a hit. He just slaps it and it goes where it goes. Wolf’s like that. He gives you what he’s going to give you no matter the competition or game situation.

Sammie, I respect and applaud your admiration for Randy Wolf. Looking at Wolf’s 162-game average for his career, he is a very pedestrian 12-11 with an era over 4. Like Mr. brownpaperbag said, Wolf isn’t a horrible pitcher, simply a utility lefty who Ned secured for the Dodgers’ championship run…along with the likes of Estes (“retired”), Milton (DL), Weaver, and Vargas (traded). For me, he has been a major disappointment, along with J. Martin. The Dodgers have been spinning their wheels for a long while now, not nearly the dominant team of April and May. For Wolf to be under .500 in August, on a team with the best record in baseball, is horrible, plain and simple. Torre kept saying last season that the Dodgers couldn’t succeed without Andruw coming around. Glad he was wrong…but Manny had a lot to do with that. This season, if J. Martin and Wolf can’t step it up, this team is in big, big trouble. They both seem to be regressing, not improving.

But if this 2009 Dodgers team wants to get to the promised land, all the excuse-making for Wolf isn’t going to get it done. The guy has not stepped up. Now Clayton Kershaw, last Wednesday in St. Louis, that is my definition of stepping up. George Sherrill yesterday in relief, that is my definition of stepping up. Andre Ethier, time and time again, that is my definition of stepping up. sammie, I DO love your optimism. But Torre scares me when it comes to the pitching staff. He coddles the starters and absolutely hammers the bullpen. The bullpen DL list is already a horror story 2/3 of the way through the season. Torre has overworked Kuo, Belisario and Wade (sore arms all) and Troncoso seems to be on fumes lately. I would be ecstatic if Kuo dominated late into October…but I fear he’ll break down again. All these guys with brittle arms are suspect. Yes, I’ll agree with you…if Belisario, Mota, Troncoso, Wade, Kuo, Weaver, Sherrill and Broxton are all HEALTHY, then look out! But I have to be a realist.

Well, I did get to listen to the entire game in the car on the way home from So-Cal (Rick and Charlie). It was a great game until THAT inning, which I am sure has been talked about over and over again.
Randy Wolf – He had his moments, but the good moments kind of got overshawdowed by two hits by batters with averages below the Mendoza line.
Russell Martin – The throw to first was unacceptable, and then dropping the perfect throw by Ethier didn’t help his situation at all.
Andre Ethier – Wow!!! again 🙂
Kuo and Mota – not bad at all!! Kuo just needs to stay healthy.

KALIH lets be real and not even consider WADE as an option in our pen haha the scouting report is out on this guy so he will not be as effective as last year! and i think KUO will be fine because i beleive the dodgers did the right thing by setting him up on the KURODA plan…they shortened the season by not blowing out their arm in the meaningless games in april/may/june/maybejuly. from AUG and SEP KUo will be able to pitch and build arm strength! but with KUO and SHERRILL that lesesens the workload for BELLISARIO and thats KEY! as for TRONCOSCO’s arm being used to much….i wont even worry about him cause he wasnt even in consideration for the SU role early in the season! TRONCOSCO was in the mix for the SP…so hes kind of different.

I resent the suggestion that Andre is benefitting by batting in front of Manny*roid. How many times has that actually happened. Last night his double was batting in front of Pierre. Yes, I wish that Andre could develop a better consistency and get his average back up to .300, where he seemed to belong. I will take a guy who leads the club in both home runs and RBI’s, and he has put those numbers together wherever he’s been put in the lineup.

Mr. Messagebear – I totally agree with you on the whole comment, but I didn’t want to copy the whole thing. I think it needed to be said again after today’s game because it wasn’t like Derek was afraid to pitch to Manny today,and it’s not like Manny is hitting at all right now. Andre doesn’t need Manny in this lineup to make him better. We all said during the off-season, Andre turning 27 this year was going to make his year a much better year, and it certainly is so far.
As far as batting average, Juan Pierre’s is being tossed around like it still matters. When was the last time he has batted like a .314 batter (at least two months now). So, the opposite can be said for him. He will most likely end the season with an average over .300 because of his limited at-bats, and it will look very nice on his 2010 baseball card.

For those of you not watching, Ethier’s throw was in plenty of time, but it was not perfect. It was 5 feet up the line and Martin was caught on the short hop. It wasn’t an easy play, and a big leaguer probably should have made it. But have you ever tried to catch a hard throw on a short hop with a catcher’s mitt with a runner bearing down on you? Not easy. And that’s why he didn’t get an error.

Somewhere along the line our management keeps betting on the wrong horses. Sure, I’m glad that we at least wound up with Sherrill, but that is probably only because Ned didn’t have any competition for him. When I look at some of the other acquisitions, why did Lee go to the Phils instead of us? Except for the Ned premium that everybody expects, I don’t think that the kind of prospects Phila. gave up would have broken us to get a premium type pitcher for the post-season. Bigger than that, I’m looking at Holliday with the Cards. This guy would have made a perfect left fielder for the Dodgers, just the kind of guy you’d like to see playing along with Andre and Matt for years. Ah, you say but we already have a premier left fielder. Well, we do have one who obviously fits Frank’s promotional schemes, just like Barnum and Bailey had their acts to attract the crowd. I bet that at the end of the season, not even to mention next year, Holliday will prove to be a much worthier player on and off the field than the Manny*roid. Sammie, a .150 hitter is a .150 hitter. 80ABs isn’t far off from what Sweeney did last year and I think we all agree, he stunk. Hernandez may not hit that all of his career, but he certainly isn’t any better than that now. Norton’s a career .250 hitter on his last legs as a major leaguer much like Sweeney was last season.
I agree with Kahli – I admire your fervent defense of Wolf, but I just don’t agree. I don’t think Wolf’s a winner anymore than I think Billz is an ace. Both of them haven’t shown me enough to warrant it.

Rough loss yesterday. I was listening to the audio feed of the game. So this morning I watched the video of the play at the plate. It’s quite obvious if Martin holds on to the ball the runner is out. You can also say on the previous play after Martin’s error allowed the runner to advance, Wolf should have bore down and got that .150 hitter out. So, I guess both Martin and Wolf were at fault. A win today would give us a series win & salvage a 3-4 road trip.
Tb4, I would love to have Miller & Morgan silenced.

messagebear – I remember back when Andruw and JP were taking up outfield space, and Matt Holliday’s name came up on trade rumors last year, some blogger wanted him traded for Ethier. I argued and argued my points about their numbers and how replacing Matt Holliday for Andre really doesn’t help the outfield, but just makes it the same because you still had Andruw and JP stinking up the outfield. Knowing what we know now, having Holliday, Kemp and Ethier in the outfield would have been fabulous. Matt Holliday is just one happy guy right now. Plus, the A’s colors just didn’t look right on him.
Indeed, Nelly – a trade of either Andre or Kemp would not have been good even for Holliday. He will be available another year from now when free agency becons. Maybe something to look forward to. It would be my favorite trio.

Good afternoon ITD boys and girls!
Tough game yesterday. While I also think that Randy Wolf was a victim yesterday of the defense behind him (or lack thereof), I also think that Randy is a better pitcher than that and could and should go much deeper into games. By and large, he kept us in yesterday’s game, but at this time of year, EVERYONE has to step up their performance a notch or two. Kershaw in the last month or so is my definition of stepping up. I’m not concerned at all that the Gnats or Rox will catch up with us in the NL West standings, but I am concerned about how deep into the playoffs we’re going to go this year. Right now, I’ve got an awful feeling in the pit of my stomach that we will be the Chicago Cubs of 2008. Best record in the league (or in baseball) but we get knocked out in the first round. I don’t think we could get swept like we swept them last year, but I have got to see A LOT more consistency offensively and defensively before I feel satisfied going into the playoffs.
I have no clue about what’s going on with Russ. Even if I overlook his offensive shortcomings (and that is hard to overlook), his defense (and I’m not just talking about yesterday) has been suspect all year. I’m beginning to think that other teams are catching onto this and are running at will with him behind the plate because he bounces so many throws. I mean, I know most hear don’t want to see “Angel talk” on Inside the Dodgers, but just look at the Angels. We all know what kind of catcher Scioscia was during his playing days. Since my husband is an Angel lover, I see their games fairly often. Scioscia’s catchers, Napoli and Mathis, are terrific defensively (it’s just that Napoli is a much better offensive player). But what I see from them defensively, that is what I expect Russ to be defensively. I mean Russ used to be better than what he is showing. But wait, hey, what position did Russ’ manager play? Yeah, catcher. I’m not sure what kind of defensive catcher Torre was, but if it’s anything like Russ, than that doesn’t bode well for us…
My concern with our SPs is the quality starts and how it will and is affecting the bullpen. I am somewhat forced to listen to or watch the gnats play often, and Cain and Linsecum are going well into 7 innings and beyond during every outing, and they aren’t winning their games by wide margins or runs either. Why isn’t that happening with us? It doesn’t seem to be a matter of saving their arms for the playoffs because Billz and Wolf, and even Kuroda, have a tendancy to have one inning where they seem to really lose it,usually somewhere between the 4-6th innings. I hope our SPs are thanking the bullpen day in and day out because if we lose our bullpen to the DL due to being overworked, we just might be toast. I went on a search to see how some of the pitchers our division are doing in getting in Quality Starts. I know we have the best record in baseball, but it’s mostly due to some timely hitting and our bullpen. However, it’s going to be our overall pitching that will take us into the playoffs and beyond.

CP – The fact that Billz closely matches up with Barry Zito in QS, and Barry Zito is the 3rd starter (and that is just because RJ is on the DL) for the gnats is kind of scary. Plus, nobody on our team has thrown a complete game yet. Chad and Hiroki have been the closest. That may be management and not necessarily them, but still…………….
I am doing great!!! We just got back yesterday from vacation. We spent half the time in Vegas and half the time in Costa Mesa and the surrounding area. How are you?
Yeah, right now the Gnats have a much better rotation than us. No, I didn’t want Ned to break up the young nucleus we have (and that includes all of them: Ethier, Loney, Kemp Billz, Kersh, et al) but it is just discouraging to say the least that not one of our pitchers CONSISTENTLY go deep into games. To me, I’m not nearly as concerned that we don’t have any complete games; a lot of that “credit” goes to Torre and how he manages his pitching staff (starters and relievers). And I’m not going to get into that right now. But it’s disconcerting to say the least that (1) Billz was lights out until mid June when he had a meltdown, to which he is only now barely starting to come back, (2) Kersh was not good early on but for the last month and a half has been pitching terrifically, and (3) Wolfy, like I said before, I think is a better pitcher than he has been showing and still can go much deeper into games. I’m worried about how our pitching as currently comprised will fare during the playoffs.
I forgot that you were on vacation! I’ve noticed that your name was missing for a while, but I didn’t really see how long you were off. I posted a little bit, but not much. As for me, it’s the same old, same old. I’m doing a lot of work; but nothing that I’m getting paid for. My volunteering at the hospital is going fine, as well as my work for church. Next week will be busy. Jim and I will pick up my mom and go to the game on Tuesday. She’s coming home with us and on Wednesday, the three of us will be going to the Ventura County Fair. Then she’ll sleep over Wednesday night and she and I will go to the game on Thursday. I’ll sleep over her place Thursday night and take her to a doctor’s appointment Friday morning.

I have the same thinking about pitching, really. I am not too concerned about complete games. That is a management decision most of the time, anyway, but we need to get our pitchers going into and out of he 7th inning at least on a more consistent basis.

I’ve have the same concerns about the starting pitching as everyone else and don’t want us to be 2008 Cubs in this years playoff. I was thinking back to the 2002 Angels who didn’t have ace starting pitching but won the WS with a dominant bullpen. That was the year they brought up K-Rod and there bullpen dominated in the playoffs. For the most part gone are the days when starting pitchers like Koufax, Drysdale, & Gibson would win 3 World Series games and dominate. I feel most playoff games are won and lost in the bullpens. That’s why the addition of Sherrill & Kuo coming back helps. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that ours holds up.

I, like the rest of you, am a bit concerned of how deep into the games our starters go. However, I think a lot of it as to do with Joe and his love of the bullpen! And, his obsession with having to get PP in there to keep him happy!
Tru, I’m going to be so bold as to say that right now, this team couldn’t beat the Giants in the playoffs.
You are probably right, bpb! I’m trying to be positive. We will find out alot about our team when we go to San Francisco next weekend. Both the Rockies and Giants won today so we had better step it up tonight.
I gotta be a realist Tru – the defense is down, the hitting with runners in scornig position is a atrocious, the starting pitching stinks other than Kersh, and we have absolutely no bench strength. The only thing we have going for us right now is a BP.
Hopefully the first 4 things will change for the better in the next two months and give us back the edge.
Gosh 11/23 risp by Boston that game was a nightmare for the Orioles. I’d would love to see 18 runs and 22 hits tonight and Manny hit 3 homeruns with 7 to 8 rbi’s, Martin goes 3 for 7 with 2 homeruns and 5 rbi’s but I can dream can I? I see Philly lost to the Giants again and glad to see another NL west team beat the all mighty Philly. I winder what Phan have to say about that one.
I hope so too, BPB. This 20 game stretch will tell us alot about our character for sure. I am more worried about our lack of a bench than our starting pitching. The pitching can improve but our bench sucks. We have nobody to put in there with bases loaded who can hit oe out.

Mr. BPB – The gnats all year have had nothing to lose. We are the ones who paid the big bucks for Manny, and we were supposed to be in a race for the division with the dbacks. So, until the games are played, it’s only on paper we look better, and that is just because of our lineup. However, Sandoval can hit a bomb just like Manny can (without the years behind him yet), and with Freddie Sanchez and Garko in the lineup now, their bats just got stronger, as well as their defense. So, the Dodgers have a lot to worry about when we play the gnats. Plus, we haven’t played at AT&T park since Manny came back from his suspension so the emotional level of those games will be higher than normal, and it’s usually bad as it is. However, one step at a time. Let’s get past this game and next week and let’s hope we can get enough of a lead on them and the Rox, that it won’t make too much of a difference for that series.
The only time we have a bench is when one of the regulars is “resting” (except Martin.) Monkeywhiskers is in Albuquerque taking some swings (6 for 18, 1HR), so maybe he can come back and provide a little pop. This is specifically why you can’t keep a guy like Pierre as the 4th OFer – no pop and his defense stinks. When you’ve got a bench of Pierre, Loretta, Castro and Ausmus, you might as well give up on ever seeing anything more than a single and one run at a time, if you’re lucky enough to even see that (as we’ve all witnessed time after time.)
Tb4&BPB Let’s not panic. Remember up until 7/23 the Dodgers were playing .642 ball. You have to expect them to come back to earth a little. They just lost 6 out of 9, which is their worst slump of the year so far. Which isn’t that bad. I do wish we go back to 11 or 12 pitchers so we can have more bats coming off the bench. When is Doug Mientkiewicz going to be ready to play?
truebluewill – They said right now Doug is just PHing, and once he takes the field and plays defense, then they will get him up to the big club. Rick and Charlie were talking about it yesterday on the pregame show.

Not panicing truebluewill, just being realistic. I may love the Dodgers, but I can see this team has some serious deficiencies that need to be taken care of. I believe they’ll make the playoffs, but as the team sits right now today, they’ll probably be out in the first round.
I miss this team PH in 2007 I wish we had those guys back.

Just heard on the pre-game show Loretta is playing because Blake hurt his wrist working out with weights. They don’t know how serious it is and might not know until tomorrow. Sounds like day to day.

So is this what has befallen the mighty ITD: a wave of Dodgers Apologists? Sulking about how right now, the Giants could beat us in the postseason? It’s August. Right now, Mickey Mantle could beat our whole squad at a game of quarters held at the Sea of Tranquility, and that’s about as likely to happen as this 8/2/09 Dodgers team playing this 8/2/09 Giants team in a Playoff series on 8/2/09.
It saddens a bit to see the firery posters of ITD fizzeld out and sulking about how the Giants are better than us… Well, we have a little over a week and a weak homestand to get ready about it. I come here, and I expect to be riled up with the posts I read, whether I agree or disagree, not see fodder for the firey sleeping Giants egos.
At this time, the Dodgers might not be better than this, but ITD is.
You can’t hold a whole team responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn’t we blame the whole MLB? I will never say the gnats are better than us. However, is it bad to think I wanted them to beat the Phillies. I hate the Phillies right now more so than the gnats, and it more has to do with the east coast bias,and the media thinking that our division is weak. Well, the Phillies just got beat 3 games out of 4 against gnats, and we beat the Phillies as well. So, where is the weakness in our division? NL East division isn’t exactly tearing it up right now, are they? The Rox just took the series from the Mets as well.

Almost every division in the league are pretty equal outside of the AL East! realitically the giants are a solid ball club and anything can happen down the stretch! one thing is clear…they have the rotation and we have the pen.our lineup is deeper so what im predicting is the dodgers winning games later in the innings when they face a team likke the giants!

All in all that was an excellent road trip of 3-4 against the likes of the Cardinals and the Braves.
To be honest we could’ve won 3 of 4 from the Cards but oh well game 1 and game 3 suck.

Wow!!! I was watching the game part of the time, listening to the game part of the time, and watching by phone part of the time. Cooking and so forth kind of happens around here occasionally. I forgot what it was like to be home. I have not had to cook for 7 days while on vacation.
What a great game that was. Matthew Ryan Kemp was awesome tonight, Billz was great, the rest of the lineup, including the new PHer, Jason Schmidt, did fabulous, and our bullpen once again sealing the deal and getting Billz his win was fantastic!!! Is there any word on Billz? I was soooo glad to see him get his form back and then to hear he got hurt was not fun at all.

Very nice game from the boys last night – great pitching, timely hitting – everything they hadn’t been doing lately. If Billz can string another 3-4 starts together like last night and they continue to hit good pitching, then I might start changing my mind about their chances in the playoffs. Get Kuroda onboard back to late ’08 levels and I’ll even give them good odds.
Speaking of which, hey folks I ruffle feathers now and then because I don’t toe the Dodgers’ Kool-Aid line – not everything they do goes without questioning. I (and a few others) shoot from the hip at what we see. So debate us fine, censure us no.
Damn that Kemp is starting to really grow. Give him another year and he’ll bring the excitement to the plate every AB that Manny does (for some) now. Now with he and Dre we have a couple of legitimate power threats in the everyday line-up.
