The treatment of Ethier is awful, horrible, Torre-able. FREE ANDRE.
At the risk of redundancy, as several of us have argued previously, with the offensive drop from Furcal to Hu, LA needs the offensive boost from Ethier, not Pierre. Martin can lead off for a couple days, as well also suggested earlier.

I cannot argue with any of the sentiments….Money matters, production does not….4 rbi for 18 mil in 36 games…thats impressive…Andre could not produce like that, that is why he is sitting…he is too productive!!!

I do not have an issue with Pierre, he is actually getting on base and stealing bases, Jones the only thing he hits is the buffet!!!!

This Furcal injury is starting to worry me. First they said he’d be back last night, now tonight, I wouldn’t be shocked if he goes on the DL.

Joe is losing it. I thought he said that Pierre is a bench player? Didn’t he say a while back that Kemp, Ethier and Jones were the starters? More easy outs in the lineup, and then he’ll wonder why they don’t win. Just priceless!

We need some innings from our starters. Bills needs to be more economical with his pitches. And RUNS,RUNS,RUNS!!! No Bad Chad tonight.

All day long I said to myself, “I really don’t expect Ethier to be in the line up, tonight”.
Then I said,”If I’m right I’m going to forget all about him and when he’s in the lineup I will be very happy for him.”

With that said, we just better gets some hitting and take advantage of the D’Backs who have just comeback to earth.

It’s time we start an all out campaign to get Ethier in the batting order each and every night. How in the hell can Torre let the guy sit on the bench night after night, who led the team in HR’S and average in ST and can’t see that he would be a better fit than Pierre.

This totally sucks. Ethier should be a big part of the future of this team and he sits night after night.

I suppose I’ll be going to bed early tonight in Illinois. Sick of our pitching allowing so many early runs and then we don’t have the horses to get back into the game. We need some long balls hit tonight.

You can complain about the lineup every day of your life but if we don’t get solid starting pitching we will not win no matter who we throw out there to bat. This actually is a serious issue and should be treated as such.

I think that Bills needs a reality check – like going back to AAA for a while. I seem to remember that in spring Training he was trying to add a pitch or two, and I think he’s still working on it in the regular season instead of throwing his fastball with authority that got him into the starter position in the first place. Let’s turn over one of the starting spots to Wade and see what he can do. Might as well give Meloan a shot too, and then of course Kershaw.

It sounds like Scully wants to say what a load of crap that Ethier is on the bench When Pierre is 2 for his last 11 ab’s but knows he can’t say it.

Remember that so much of baseball is mental. Team chemistry. Both good hitting and good pitching feed on each other. Some players are more affected by it than others. But if the current management decisions are so frustrating to the fans, it doesn’t take much imagination to figure out that it may also be affecting some of the players and ultimately the team’s performance. I don’t see how the current climate is very conducive to top performance.

I am still baffled by this whole situation.

dnelson, I also wondered if Torre is trying to make a point to managment. It would be the opposite of when Tracy refused to play Choi – maybe Torre is playing Jones and Pierre until Colletti finally admits they are horrible and gets off his back.

Either that, or they are trying to sit Ethier until he finally starts complaining. Then they will get Plaschke to write an article about what a bad presence he is in the clubhouse, and Colletti will use that as an excuse to trade him.

No team can look good down so early night after night after night. Players are trying to hit a five-run homers. No small ball, no patience. Joe had a nice thing going…then he benches Ethier…then Raffy gets dinged and he compounds the situation with his brain-dead thinking that only little Juan can lead off.

As Scully said, We missed the good pitchers of the teams we’ve played so far. Otherwise, we might be 8 to 10 games behind.

I live up in nor-cal. Has Torre been asked directly why he is not playing Ethier? I guess I am asking about live interviews versus print. I am able to read what is being said, but I was wondering if he has done any live interviews on the subject down in LA. However, even the print articles are only about why he is playing Jones and Pierre and not about why he is not playing Andre.

Ups and downs of any season, but we do have a great excuse. Our best player is hurt. But, the pitching. This starting pitching needs to turn it around.

Kent our fearless leader is flying under the Pierre, Jones radar. He’s been stinking it up also.

We just have to take it in stride
Don’t get frustrated and don’t lose hope.

They have to find the in between and be more consistent.

Alex – yes, Furcal is our best player (especially this season). But if we had the chemistry going, the rest of the team would be sucking it up and winning for Furcal. Hard to have that chemistry when management is sitting one of the best players – Ethier. Don’t know if that effects the pitching, but the pitching really sucks right now. Is it contagious? Will Kuroda suck tomorrow?

This is just offense and that’s not bringing up his few diving catches and outfield assists. I hope there is reasoning behind this madness because right now, the other two outfielders are not matching up. As for Matt Kemp, I feel for him too having to put up being out there with those two.

5 Zip Houston: another testimonial to Torre’s managerial skills. Ethier doesn’t even make an appearance in the game. Young is wasting away on the bench. But it is important that we let the veterans get their swings in.

If baseball was a computer game and we could have played Ethier in place of Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones at the same time we still would have gotten killed.

like that was what he did in 3 games, walked 2 times. thats it. way to get things going. doubtful the ball even left the infield which i guess is a good thing. yawn. were a .500 team. i’d say we need to do something but the things that our management would do to do something would be worse than just hangin on and hoping that things just work out.

Should be obvious by now that Pierre is no lead-off hitter. But then, its should be obvious that a team with little power to begin with isn’t going to score much with one of its power guys sitting on the bench night after night.

Torre’s managerial skills have gone beyond the incredulous and have solidly set foot into the realm of the insane. I guess we shouldn’t be surprised since he’s a vet’s manager. Sweeney PH over Ethier in a situation where you could get back into the game is a classic example of both points.

(Note to Frank – if you’re committing to the youth movement, you’ve got to play them. You don’t hire an ex-Giant to run the team, and you don’t hire a vet’s manager to manage.)

As far as I’m concerned, Frank needs to clean house. That means firing that idiot Colletti, firing “HOF” manager Torre (isn’t it obvious that anyone can manage when you constantly have the best players money can buy?, which obviously leaves Frank out.) DFA Jones, Pierre, Sweeney, and Nomore. Hold onto Kent and Lowe long enough to get something for them at the trade deadline, do your homework and hire an ex-Dodger to be your manager, hire a tandem GM in White and Ng, and USE THE “R” WORD.

This team has absolutely NO DIRECTION. Another classic example – You’re going to hire Girardi who’s a kids manager, then when you can’t land him, you do a 180 and hire a vet’s manager, but you’ve still got the same young players. Colletti’s built a team that’s always going to hover +/- 10 games of .500. It can’t do anything else. It doesn’t commit to playing the youth. It doesn’t commit to playing viable vets. Is it getting younger or is it getting older? Nobody knows because one day its one thing and the next day its something else.

Until Frank gets a clue that his house is in disarray, it’ll continue to be the SOS.

Since offering to go on a diet with Andruw Jones and getting nowhere with him, I’ve lost 14 pounds, so I checked in with the Tubbo on Saturday night to see how he was doing on his own.

Saturday night the fans in Dodger Stadium booed Jones’ name when the starting lineup was announced. “Don’t you care that the fans in Dodger Stadium have turned on you?”

“No,” he said. “That’s their problem.”

I suggested that it’s not human for someone not to be bothered by booing fans in their own stadium, and he stuck out his tongue and made some noise.

“How do I write that down?” I said.

All together now: “I don’t care,” he said.

Without the fans, I said, there’s no reason for you to be here in Los Angeles playing baseball and no way you’re getting paid $36 million over the next two years.

“I don’t care,” he said. “You play for the team, you don’t play for the fans. The fans never played the game. They don’t know.”

“Don’t you understand why people are upset with you? You sign a big contract and report to spring training out of shape. . . .”

So I checked in with Joe Torre, and he said, “I think he could have been in better shape.”

I reminded Jones that I had lost 14 pounds and even had eaten a doughnut with the 7-Eleven Kid, and how does it look when the team’s center fielder has a bigger belly than the columnist writing about the team?

“Look at your belly hanging out of your shirt,” Jones said. “You’re probably going to die tomorrow.”
Both a Tubbo and clueless, which really isn’t a very good combination for the player with the highest annual salary in Dodgers history.

“unless I’m wrong, I sincerely believe the fans are the ones who ultimately pay Jones salary. Without the fans, he would be a less than average baseball player with no place to play or make 18 mil a year….

I sincerely believe Torre should sit (I don’t care) Jones and (punchless) Pierre for the next 10 games and play Ethier in left, Kemp in center and Young in right and see what this combination can do. It certainly won’t do any worse than we’re doing now.

I was wondering about last nights game , why would Torre send up Sweeny with his 120 AVG. when he has Ethier on the bench hitting close to 300 with 3 home runs and 15 RBIs. The only thing that even makes a little sense is that for some reason, unbeknownst to me Dodger management is PO’d at Ethier for something, and this is their way of punishing him. What they don’t realize is that it’s affecting the team and it’s fans. Sweeney should be released along with certain other unproductive players just as the Pads did with Edmonds. At least then it would show that management will not tolerate bad performance from anybody. I know it won’t happen because all Frank and his people care about is how much money they can make, and not if their team wins or loses

I was trying to get some positive information out of all this mess, so I always go fishing for stats. Eventhough Ethier hasn’t played for too many games now, he still remains in the top 5 in all Dodger batting categories, except for one (RBIs).

Pierre is in one (1st in stolen bases) and Jones is one (5th in runs)

So, eventhough Ethier is sitting on the bench, he is still beating the crap out of our other two “so-called” starting outfileders, and they have a long way to go to get there.

Honest opinion? If Pepe Frias and the Staypuft Marshmallow Man are back in the line-up today and Ethier is on the bench, when the D’s take the field to start the game the stadium crowd needs to pick-up the chant AN-DRE AN-DRE. At least he’ll know he has fan support. Might also be a little embarrassing for management, not that they care.

Is there any way that next time you have ned answering questions that you could have him address what Andrew Jones told the Times about not caring about the fans. The fans are mighty frustrated that we have 2 very talented young outfielders and 2 overpaid veteran outfielders that are underperforming and taking valuable playing time from the talented ones who deserve the playing time.

Aside from Ned, does Frank or anyone else on the team care to address Jones’ comments.

This cracks me up…keep working your tail and produce, why? so he can stay in AAA and be the MVP….The younger players are going to get demotivated, if you are overpaid and you do not produce you play, underpaid (not that any of them are) and produce you sit….where is the motivation, the rainbow with the pot of gold…this is insane….

Martinloneykemp and leefink can lead the charge on the chants. I also meant to say in addition to intros for the starting lineup. I think it needs to be done as often as possible. Also, if Andre is in the lineup, it needs to be done for DY.

I agree cosmow. We need to hear from Ned in answer to the fans question as to why the management does not attempt to put the best team on the field. We as fans want to win. Lets also address our pitching problems.

Maybe it would be much better to bring up Kershaw and a couple more pitchers and let them start games and let Lowe and Penny and our struggling pitchers relieve.

Here’s a quote from the Riverside Press-Enterprise:

I think that is also very perceptive on the writer’s part, and sooner or later it ought to have some impact on McCourt – I don’t think he will like being LA’s laughing stock, but he deserves it.

Instead of insulting his weight just ask him, 52 times this year you came up with Runners on and got 4 hits so far and 27 times all u needed to do was get a hit to score a run and u have succeeded so far 1 time, does that help the teamates?

Questions for Ned, why doesn’t management recognize that they have to put their best team on the field to win games. Why are they keeping under productive over paid players when other teams would have already released them? What does Ethier have to do to play everyday?

“I just don’t believe he can’t hit any more,” Torre said.

Two talent evaluators aren’t so sure. Neither one was authorized by his club to speak publicly about Jones.

“I don’t see anything that would make him better than a fourth outfielder,” an American League evaluator said.

His bat speed has slowed, the evaluators said, a trend that generally does not reverse itself unless an injury explains the decline. Of course, his bat would look quicker with a flurry of home runs.

In 2005-06, Jones ranked fifth in the National League in slugging percentage, at .553. In 2007-08, he ranks 80th, at .389.

He strikes out as never before, and he struggles even when he makes contact. In 2005-06, when Jones put a fastball in play, he hit .363, according to STATS LLC. In 2007-08, that average is .305.

“If I were the opposing team, I’d throw him nothing but fastballs until he proves he can hit them,” an NL evaluator said.

That evaluator said he clocked Jones — while beating out an infield hit — at 4.7 seconds to first base.

“That’s what a catcher runs,” he said.

And, although the Dodgers trumpet defense, the evaluators independently made the same observation about Jones: He used to play notoriously shallow, daring anyone to hit balls over his head, knowing he could race back and catch them. Now he plays deep, so balls drop in front of him.

Two statistical measures — zone rating and range factor — suggest Jones ranks as an average center fielder.

Jones weighed 210 pounds during his glory years with the Braves. He weighed 248 this spring, so perhaps the decline in speed and range can be reversed.

“I’m not saying he’s not overweight,” Torre said.

They should send AJ to a fat farm and put him on the DL till he loses 38 pounds and then to AAA for rehab.

2008 Dodgers payroll: $ 118,188,536

2008 Dodgers payroll playing Jones, Nomore and JP: $ 118,189,536

2008 Dodgers payroll playing Ethier, DY and DeWitt: $ 118,189,536

Wouldn’t it behoove management therefore to play the best players regardless of individual salary? If on the otherhand management can look you in the eye and with a straight face declare that AJ, NG and JP are the better players, then there’s something so fundamentally wrong with this regime as to be irreparable.
