Enough of the $*@&# negativity!
OK, so I guess that probably got people’s attention. But the truth is, I’ve tried hard not to weigh in on this topic but after receiving email this weekend that people actually want to stop visiting this site and start their own Dodger blog because so many people here are being so negative, I finally had to at least try and help the situation along.
Please know that I am not trying to stop you all from sharing your opinions here, but I do believe that there is a tendency to harp on every minor thing that goes on with certain players/staff/executives that some of you on the blog don’t like. All I ask is that you actually try to keep the criticism remotely constructive and for a second, consider that this is actually not intended to be a place to rip the team to shreds whenever someone makes an error or an on-field decision that you disagree with.
This is also a place where many young fans like to read and the constant bad language is getting tiresome. My headline to this post was a joke because let’s be honest, just because you put a bunch of numbers or symbols in place of a bad word doesn’t mean that you aren’t having the same effect. I think everyone can get their respective points across without the bad language or mock bad language. At least I hope so. I hate to think that a few negative folks are making this a less enjoyable site to visit for the rest of the fans.
So please, keep this in consideration while you’re posting your comments. I don’t want this to become a place where everyone has rose-colored glasses on (that’s my job), but I also think that mistakes will happen from time to time and once you’ve made your point that you aren’t a big fan of a player or a decision, you don’t have to continue to point it out four times on each thread or every single day of the season.

Here is a nice positive list of OPS guys on the Dodgers.
6 of these guys are under 28. The two worst are in two of our more important spots in the lineup. So just think that how good we can be when Nomar can hit the ball out of the infield again and when JP can get on base again.
The other thing cool about this list is it shows the depth we have created by these verteran signings. If anyone gets hurt, we could subsitute them with someone even better! That’s awesome.

I can see the debate of Pierre 8th and maybe Abreu at 2nd (cause he also has good speed), but I don’t think they will give up on Pierre at 2nd yet. Plus, Abreu hasnt had enough ABs to really sow his OB% is much greater…(yet). Although Pierre and Nomar seem to have given up their 1st/2nd hardest to K crown this year, we still know what they can do.
With Nomar’s power drop, I wish we’d have Martin at 3rd and Nomar 5th. Or at least let Martin bat 5th and Gonzo 6th. Hard to convince people to bat for an All-Star that bats 6th in your line-up.

Good to see Gonzo get a rest today, hope Clark can show people a reminder of why he was of interest to the D’s. hasn’t had many chances so far. (Yes, I’d rather see Kemp up, but his time will come.) I hope they can win today because the Padres series is going to be a tough ‘un!

Good work Josh! I have basically stopped posting and reading this blog excet to check on the line up b/c Its a bunch of gripers. I cant imagine what will happen if the team (gulp) falls out of FIRST PLACE.
Obviously, theres always room for all oppinions but there no value what so ever in harping on certain players over and over and complaining about the line up every day. There is way way to much misinformation and complaining here that really isn’t necessary. I often wonder if some people want the team to fail so they feel vindicated in all their bitterness. Seriously.
My father always encouraged me, “if you don’t have something good to say…” You get the point. We’re all Dodgers fans (fanatics), and yes, because we are unpaid critics, we have the right to express ourselves.
But I agree with Josh, negative repetition isn’t a pretty thing. This blog should be like a Dodgers game, “the happiest place on earth!” (with the right to express our biased opinions!”
Go Blue (and save the negativity for the Giants, Padres, and D’Backs)!
SD and AZ are both off today, so a win today puts us a 1/2 game alone in first place going into SD.

Thank You, Josh. I have been saying the same thing for the past several weeks, but it carries a lot more weight coming from you (I hope). This used to be THE best MLB blog out there. Hopefully we can get it back to that level again. How about it Harold, Frank, kday01, Ray?
Unfortunately, many of the great posters from last season seem to have vanished (or they rarely check in here anymore), and that is sad, as they always brought some great insight to this blog and made it a special place. I have to believe that they stopped posting here because of the chronic negativity day in and day out. For those who cannot resist ragging on the Dodgers, give dodgerblues.com a try. They thrive on bashing the Dodgers.
Today is a golden opportunity for us to pick up a half game on all of the other NL West teams and regain sole possession of first place, as they are all off today (except for the almost last place Giants, who already won their game today. I HATE the Giants!)
It’s good to see Brady Clark in the line up today. He is WAY overdue for a break-out game.

I read your blogs everyday for the insider scoop on my team. I am happy to know that the negative people get to you as well. GO BLUE.
1) I can’t claim everything I’ve said has been entirely positive, nor will I. But there is certainly a point where people just seem to want to harp on the same thing over and over again. Some things are worth letting go, and it’s also worth remembering that Grady Little doesn’t read any of the comments here, so it’s not going to change his mind.
2) I’m happy to see that against the left-hander the outfielder that will rest today will be Gonzalez, not Ethier, although Ethier did give Little a nice reminder of his abilities yesterday by knocking the game-winner over the fence.
3) Jeff Kent was in a funk, but I think he can pull himself out of it against a lefty pitcher with a 5.35 ERA.
4) After last weekend’s series (and the events of this past weekend), it really stood out to me how much Grady Little contrasts with Lou Pinella. Little is calm, mild-mannered, and he’s funny on purpose. Pinella, on the other hand, appears to lack any sort of mental stability, and it’s hard not to laugh at the guy sometimes. Everytime something went wrong he would stare blankly in amazement, and his postgame press conferences sound like Jim Mora (I’m waiting for Pinella to say the Cubs “didn’t do diddly-poo offensively”). Sure, Little’s prone to mistakes, but he does the job well for the most part, and he manages his players well too.
5) It’s good to see that Schmidt is healthy again and will return to the rotation tomororw, but I’m just as excited that Kuo will stick around in the rotation. Apart from a bad first inning, Kuo had a good outing – by game score it was the best starting pitching performance of the weekend, he just had the misfortune of minimal run support. But in any event, it’s hard to not feel better about Schmidt and Kuo than Tomko and Hendrickson. By the same token, I feel good about Lowe on the mound today.
Great to see DB get name dropped. The place does have a negative tone, but I’d be hard pressed to find a place on the web with more knowledgeable and loyal fans than DB. Amongst the rubble and ruins there lies many great baseball discussions, and some nudey pics.
I hope this lineup means that, da Gonz has just been given the day off to rest and that nothing is physically wrong. Incidenally I like to refer to hime as da Gonz, because, almost every one named Gonzalez, these days, is called Gonzo. I was just checking for any news on Saito, I want to hear some good news. Another thing on the lineup it’s good to see Clark getting some at bats. LET’S GO DODGERS.
Like I said yesterday. I agree with Alex that the basher is using different names. I reminded tha blog on how they bashed Furcal. Nomar and Penny last year.
I enjoyed last year’s bloggers a lot more too and for the same reason, I don’t exchange my thoughts anymore. It wasn’t any fun to read this blog; most of it has been dominated by this one guy bashing the Dodgers.
He seems to have created a couple of new names today and mellowed out a bit.

Not to parrot some of these other responses to badly but I do read this blog everyday to get the “inside skinny” on whats going on within the Dodgers as the name of the blog implies. I dont bother to read what these arm chair managing Monday morning quarterbacks have to say. Please keep up the great work. This is the only MLB blog I check daily and just wanted to say thanks and Go Dodgers from a fan who just recently moved from L.A. who no longer gets the same TV\Radio coverage other than online\MLB.TV
Thanks Josh, like others, I had quit reading or posting due to the nature of the posts. I would only check lineups and injury or rehab reports. I think people forget it is a 162 games and all teams are generally going to lose 70 and win 70, those other 22 are the real difference. If you play .550 ball you still lose 73 games and have 89 wins. Which if I remember was around what they were projecting for the NL West. By the way, .600 ball you still lose 65 games.
Long overdue post about this situation Josh, once again thanks for everything. All I’ve ever asked for was constructive criticism, but it’s just been getting out of hand lately. So I’m glad it’s being addressed. This is actually a very big game because it’s the difference between being ahead of two teams by a 1/2 game OR behind two teams by a 1/2 game. I cannot stress how much I love this blog!

There wouldn’t be so much negativity around here if Juan Pierre simply wasn’t signed.
I’ll chime in, too – trying to make this the longest stretch of posts w/out a meaningless negative comment in about 2 months.
You guys have read me over the past month asking the critical guys to make their point and then stop. That’s all any of us here ask. We understand the Dodgers aren’t perfect; most of us acutely understand pretty much all of their flaws. But the point of this blog is not to rub our noses in the flaws day in and day out, but to discuss and appreciate the team we have, make our points, and move on. I’ll definitely start posting on here more if the blog calms down a bit, and I’d love to see some of the offseason regulars come out of hiding.
My first time back here in a long time, so this question has probably been asked before.
The Dodgers are in need of a power hitter in this lineup. Any thoughts of AROD here next season or perhaps a Yankees collapse and him being here at the trade deadline?
This team has a chance to make it far, but I don’t like our post season chances without a big hitter in the middle of the lineup.
Matt Kemp needs to be starting in LF too.

scurtis, I’ve been talking about A-Rod for a month. I’d rather see him opt out and sign a 7-year contract with LA than be traded for, simply because a team like LA can afford a big contract from a future HOF guy, and then we won’t give up any of our pitching prospects.

Good to see some real Dodger fans be supportive of their team. It’s hard to not be over critical of your favorite team, but you always got to think about the position that these guys are in and the decisions they have to make every day. We have a great Owner, a Great GM and a Manager thats helped the team make it to the play-offs in his first run.
There are few blemishes here and there, but it’s nothing compared to the wonderful things that are coming out of this ball club.

Good points on A-Rod puppyhead01. I sincerely believe that if the Tankees do not turn things around by the All-Star break, some heads are going to roll (Joe Torre comes to mind). By the way, I HATE the Yankees!
I, too, believe that A-Rod is looking to be traded to a big market team (that can win) that has a shot at going to the World Series (say, like the Dodgers). I’m just not sure that Frank and Ned will be willing to spend the amount of money it will cost to land him (without selling the farm, that is).
He is, without question, a future Hall of Famer and, as has been pointed out several times recently, is the only current player with a legitimate shot of beating Bonds’ pending record.

A couple of points–
1) It’s a little naive to start a blog about a sports team, allow comments on that blog, and then expect people to not argue about who the manager should put in the lineup and who the GM should or shouldn’t have signed. That is exactly what sports fans do — they discuss and argue about those things. And they often complain loudly when the team makes a move that’s idiotic. You should be thankful for that, actually, because that sort of intense fan interest is the reason professional sports exist in the first place, and the reason you have the job you do.
2) That said, it would be nice if people would make their points in a more constructive way than saying “Pierre *****.” Of course he does, but just saying that over and over isn’t going to convince anybody. Well-reasoned arguments as to why Pierre is a bad player — and there are many, many such arguments — work better than simply calling the guy names. And repeating the same stuff over and over gets old. [Although, if you REALLY want to get rid of all the Pierre complaining, perhaps the best solution would be for the Dodgers to just stop playing him and then everyone would stop complaining about him.;) ]
3) The Pierre defenders on the site — and I include Josh in this, even though defending Pierre is part of his job — have contributed to the polarization of the site by often refusing to acknowledge the slightest flaw in the little guy’s game. Fluff stories appear on Dodgers.com, in the comments here, and even in the L.A. Times about what great contributions Pierre is making — when in actuality, there is no way any reasonable person could conclude that Juan Pierre has been a good baseball player this year. The Pierre haters wouldn’t go so ballistic if the Pierre defenders were a little more accepting of reality in regards to the quality of his play.
Going back to Jungar, the third posting of the day, why don’t managers assume that the previous week’s OPS statistics will establish their lineups for the following week? (Those presumptions can occasionally be overriden because a batter is historically hot against certain teams).
The lineup for this week would be:

Ethier (.742)

Pierre (.626)
Of course, the last three players would be livid. But why do managers worry so much about the morale of veterans? These players are well-paid professionals. Their play should not be affected by changes in the lineup based on solid statistics over a week. Why is a stable linup so sacred? Besides, in a week, their position in the lineup could change. In other sports you play your hot players or take them out. Why not give your best players in baseball the most at-bats? And change the lineup often?
I just checked the NL All-Star balloting – Martin’s up to #3. He’s still almost 100k votes behind LoDuca, though…that would be a load of **** if NY fans got him voted in over Martin. Get your wives, girlfriends, (boyfriends/husbands, ty Zobeida) to vote 25 times for him ASAP. Martin deserves that spot more than any of the guys above him. Let’s prove how much we love the guy and get him voted in.
Robroy makes a great point — our worst players also happen to be among the most respected veterans on the team. Benching those veterans would almost certainly enrage them as well as many of their teammates. However, NOT benching them would result in the continual sputtering of the offense. At some point, the Dodgers will have to make a decision between disrupting the clubhouse morale and actually scoring runs, or keeping the good clubhouse morale while struggling to score.
At some point, eventually, playing time will have to be given out based on merit and not on reputation. Have we reached that point yet?
Hopefully Josh can update us on Saito & Brazoban in a later post. i really hope we win today so we can go to S.D. with at least half a game lead, nice to see Schmidt healthy again & making his return start against the Pads.

Great post josh! I’ve been guilty of posting negatively in the past, but for the most part I remain true and loyal to my Dodgers! I for one am happy that Ned and Grady are running this team. Although I’m sure I speak for a vast majority here… the whole JP thing has left many wondering “why”. It’s certainly not the way we had all hoped this team would head and to commit for that long… well… it’s been discussed a million ways from Sunday, that’s for sure. But I was hoping that I’d get a few laughs from my last post in the previous thread… such is my sick, twisted humor…

TrueBlueLA is a really cool blog with a sabermetric slant, so those of you who don’t think DePodesta should be burnt at the stake should go there for your statistical analysis.
And Dodgerblues.com is the place to vent the frustration thatc omes from Juan Pierre and his contract, Grady’s completely bizzare moves, etc.
And despite the fact that this place is VERY positive and Dodgerblues is incredibly sarcastic and negative (and the other two are in between), they’re all Dodger fans who live and die with the team. Just pick the right forum for your kind of posting. If you need to swear about JP, go to DB, they’ve got 15 people to say vulgar things and agree with you – and sometimes I’ll be one of em.
I think Josh deserves the respect of keeping his blog the environment he wants it to be. Use the right places for your sentiments, y’know?

Dodgers definetely need to get a power bat in that lineaup. Teixera or Miguel Cabrera would be a good pick up. They are both young and have alreday establish themselves as power hitters.

The majority of the people complaining about negativity are veterans of this blog who have watched the tone and content of the blog change since the beginning of this season. I don’t think their posts are quite negative, since they’re trying to change the blog into the more positive environment it once was…

What ever it takes to get on base. I don’t know about you guys but what i have noticed alot this season is that dodgers don’t bunt enough! I see alot of plays were you have peple on first and second base with no outs. So instead of bunting the runners over they let them swing. And alot of the times they bat in to a double play. Why don’t they bunt them over? Sometimes the fundamentals of baseball will win you a ball game. I understand if It is Kent or Nomar batting that they won’t bunt, but how about the other guys. Every run counts. Either comes up alot in those kind of situations he should be bunting people over.

For all of you who know more than me…like coaches and players who played at a high level….
What is wrong with Nomar? I know he dosen’t think anything is wrong (he is lying) and he dosen’t seem hurt (running, fielding fine)…but his slugging and average is so low for him and it has been low since last seasons all star break..2 extra base hits in a month is just absurd. The only thing more crazy about it is he has been doing it in our 3 hole (if laroche, kemp, loney, abreau, betimet, ethier and others) did that they would be in AAA or at the very least, not hitting 3rd.
I wonder what is wrong with him. I hope he can do the opposite of last year and finish really strong cause if he does it would be like adding a big bat in a trade.
Yeah jungar, every time I see Nomar it has me wondering. His season OPS is soooo far below his career; do his mechanics look different anyone? I can’t see a difference between this year’s swing and last year’s.

I think its the twins myself…First time father and twins at that I think his thought process has changed with all that comes with having kids.I don’t think it is anything that will keep him from producing but I think that it is a distraction that he has not adjusted to yet.The only support I have for this is that its the only thing that has really changed for him.
Well puppyhead i must say Nomar has one of the ugliest swings in baseball IMO! I love the guy just as much as anyother Dodger fanatic but it hurts me to watch the guy swing, it boggled my mind when he was hitting so hot last year. What ever works i guess but i agree Puppy i cant tell any differences between the two swings. I really think the injuries from last year are still lingering, maybe not in physical pain but limiting him in motion, maybe not allowing him to clear the hands, throwing his hips out to early, or even turning them to late, i am desperately trying to find a reason why he is hitting so pourly. Although on the other hand the guy is clutch with RISP but i can honestly sit hear and say that out of all the games so far i dont see where he has 30+ RIBs, but whatever he has been doing he is getting them at the right times i guess, a mind boggeler for me!
Lowe really seems to have the stuff tonight, and he’s got a whole run on the scoreboard behind him. Let’s get this game locked up. We need it.

BUT, I think about 50 people agree with my posts while 3 agree with yours…Get Over Yourself…
It looks to me as if something is wrong with Nomar’s backside (right leg). Often times this year I’ve seen his right foot leave the ground after a swing. That isn’t good because all power in a baseball swing is generated by the back hip, when your back foot leaves the ground not only do you lose the main power source in your swing but you also lose all balance (usually making you unable to sit back on off-speed pitches) maybe thats why he continually swings at 1st pitch fastballs this year.
yeah I was counting pitches and ready to say 8 pitch BB for JP ….That was a tough call I thought it was outside…but the important guy didn’t.

I hate the RISP arguement.
Why? well I think it’s easier to hit with runners in scoring posistion because…(wait, here is the kicker)because there are RISP!
Not to many people are worse although I am generalizing.(even a passive hitter like JD Drew was better. go check)
An Aggresive hitter like Nomar will hit way better.
But the MAIN reson I hate it is because it takes away the fact that he is hitting .226 (with a .270 OBP) for the year with no runners on base.. So how can Martin, Gonzo and Kent get rbi’s when our 3 hitter cant get on base.
I think the twins theory is a good one. I’d like to hear others, cause yeah swing seems to be the same.

Thanks for the post. Thanks to Gary for speaking on behalf of many of us. I have kept up with the post but only recently started to post regularly again to show support for Alex and especially Josh. No one disagrees with opinions being expressed with civility but many of us really don’t like bashing when something good happens every game. It is still a game and the greatest one there is.
You see these are my Dodgers, have been since 1952. I just love the white home uniform with Dodgers written on it. The Dodgers are one of the most important aspects of my life, after faith, family, friends, country.I still collect Dodger cards and will continue to do so. That is why I enjoyed the blog so much last year connecting with real Dodger fans – good insights from Ray, Kevin,Gary and others, real life Dodger stories from 51, 53, Frank, ****, asq and others. That is also why I dislike the sharp criticisms of almost every decision, every lineup this year. These are my Dodgers.
Ned gives his best shot and it’s not bad at all, in contention for both of his years on board. Grady does a good job. We might have had Lou Pinella. I would much sooner have Grady being tossed out of a game with his team in first place than Lou with his team 7.5 games out.
I realize that the negative posts were perhaps from the same individuals but we allowed ourselves to be drawn into it and respond in kind. As real fans let’s just concentrate on the Dodgers on the field and not on posts that detract from our enjoyment. Just think, we might have been Giant fans. GO DODGERS!!

His swing has never been pretty but IMO its never been quite as ugly as it is right now. Last year he stayed balanced through the ball and this year he looks like he’s lunging at it. Is this a familiar sight, Nomar slaps at an offspeed pitch and its a chopper way foul down the 3rd base line. This is a clear sign that he’s not sitting back on the ball. I’ve also noticed that he looks uncomfortable (grimaces) after many of his swings. I wouldn’t at all be suprised if something is wrong on his right side (Ankle, hammy, knee, oblete)

charris thanks for the insight. I think I know what you mean now that you have said it. I notice it too but can’t articulate it. As a golfer sometimes I let my weight go back thru my right knee and out the other side. This robs me of the tension in the rest of my swing, so my swing looks the same but there is no power there because I am all uncoiled. It makes alot of sense. Now, you see it but what about Eddie Murray or Grady? Or is it that they see it but aren’t willing to do something about it? I mean would it kill our team to drop him to the 6th hole if he must be played?

dodgerdude – I expect the Yanks want arms but I wouldn’t give up Kershaw or Billingsley. I have felt all along that for some reason James Loney doesn’t fit in with the Dodger plans. I like his Mark Grace characteristics but expect the Dodgers eventually want more power at first base. I expect Andy LaRoche is expendable. However, I am always leary of taking on highly paid superstars. It doesn’t seem possible to get value for dollars from them especially with long term contracts. GO DODGERS!!

I agree with Euhlman. Let’s just let the kids start playing more and more and more and build our team the way we used to, from the inside. I am all about going after Migel Cabrerra. He is under 25, still. But A-rod, in his 30’s, nah. Is he good, heck yeah, great even..But i also think he brings to much baggage, to much negativity and his payday is huge. The bottom line with A-rod is he is not a winner. Just look at the Yanks, they haven’t won anything since he got there. He was in last place most of the time in Texas and as good as he was in Seattle, Jr and Edgar were their true money players. I am not an A-rod fan except on my fantasy team.

Los Angeles Dodgers closer Takashi Saito has tightness in his left hamstring and may miss a key three-game NL West series in San Diego that starts Tuesday night.
Saito, 16-for-16 in save conversions this season and 26-for-26 dating to the end of last season, could not pitch Monday night in Pittsburgh. Manager Grady Little expects him to be sidelined for two to three days “in a best-case scenario.”

“Hopefully, Saito won’t be out but for a few days, but we don’t know yet,” Little said.
The Dodgers aren’t considering putting Saito on the 15-day disabled list because they expect him to be ready long before that. However, they do plan to make a move Tuesday to add another pitcher.

Hey fisher928 – “Big Bad John” was the work of Jimmy Dean (of sausage fame). Johnny Cash was one of many artists who later sang it. Jimmy Dean released it in 1961 and it won a Grammy for Best County/Western song in 1962.
What’s funny is that they began playing it last season at Dodger Stadium whenever Broxton came into the game. He was asked about it during a post-game interviewer (by A Martinez, I think) and he said that he had never heard of it before. (Uggh! Kids today!).
About the A-Rod thing – No Deal in my opinion. Not because it’s A-Rod, but because it’s Boras. Now, Miguel Cabrera? That’s a different story. That kid would look GREAT in Dodger Blue! I think that a deal for him could happen; as I know he would love nothing more than to get out of Florida and into the big money market. However, like A-Rod, he will be VERY expensive and potentially disruptive to the Farm – but we need to do something and I have a feeling that Ned has something up his sleeve.

mfc You are a goodguy and always have something good to post sl is a goodguy too I think he is just a little more challenged with american language and the nuiances infered by some posts.When I first came online 12 years or so ago I found it Very Handy to Have a dictionary next to the computer eventhough I have always only spoken english and grew up in So Calif with a very good background in English studies.Differant people have differant ways of expressing themselves and there are always words that challenge my spelling at times as well as those that I have never used nor heard.I don’t need it very often anymore but it still comes in handy to have for referance.This is not pointed at anyone in particular but just something that some might find useful who don’t use this valuble resource called a ‘Book’ and I in no way use it for every word that I try to spell obviously!

Cabrera is the best young hitter out there… by far. He still has a few years of arbitration left i believe, so he’ll stay semi-cheap for a little while longer. Though I am sure the dodgers would lock him up for 6+ years if we do trade for him.

I think throwing someone out from the OF is important since we got Pierre/Gonzo weak arm out there. Why did you even mention homerun? He got more homerun/rbi than Pierre and Gonzo combined. He can also played 3rd bases and that is what we needed.
How many time a routine single turn into a double with them 2 in our OF?
I think an OF of Ethier in LF, Kemp in CF and Cuddyer in RF. Is better than what we have right now.

You make a bunch of us wonder about your loyalty at times “Dude”… but I’m certain that you really do care. It appears to most that you cannot accept the simple fact that the things you want to see changed with the Dodgers won’t change any time soon no matter how much you implore your opinions. It’s not all about how bad you **** for this play or that ab its all about how the team prevails and in the toughest division in baseball we are tops.Granted not by much and the slimest of margins but we are on top.I expect us to come home with 2nd place but that will only happen if we lose more then we win against a tough team at home.Its baseball and it happens.If we Return home still in first place guess what… we still have to win…and somebody has to be the winner and somebody the loser.We Take it as we can get it and prevail then we Win…..

holy cow. regarding the positivity issue here on this blog, i find a few things strikingly funny.
1. most of the time the JP bashers, myself included, just wanna hear justification. whether it be from other posters, josh….whomever has a good answer to the ultimate mystery that is juan pierre. the majority of the time the questions and legit stats are ignored, and simply dismissed as being negative and not being a dodger fan. that is absurd. alex brings facts to the table, charris brings facts to the table, but outside that, there is an overall ” blind ” feel to the blog.
2. imagine the capabilities of this team minus juan pierre. they are endless. juan pierre is the only thing stopping this team from contending for a championship. a big stick in his place would make this a SCARY team. but hey we all know this and we just have to deal with it.
in closing, i just would like to say overall. the players ned has dealt really havent done anything, and hes signed some nice players for us. but this juan pierre deal has all the makings of an albatross.

Here I was impressed that this thread was going to be the first in the history of “Inside the Dodgers” to exceed 300 replies, only to find that half of them are bantering between two or three people – OVER NOTHING.
Y’all need to go back and read Josh’s initial post and then exchange e-mail addresses (real ones) or cell phone numbers and settle this off-line.
I can assure you that you guys have effectively chased away the very guys (and gals) that Josh (and a few of us) were trying bring back to this site. It doesn’t matter if you are 7, 17, 53, or 107 – GROW UP! This is the Dodgers blog for Pete’s sake, not Dr. Phil.

I think we should all lay of JP for a while. He will pick it up soon. He has average 180 hits a season in his last four seasons. He is a threat on the base pad when he gets on. I like the combo with Furcal and Pierre at the top of the lineup. They are both speedy runners. One or the other will get on. I would like to see JP lead off and Furcal behind him. Pierre is stealing more bases than Furcal. Furcal has a more pop on his bat to drive the ball and move him over. I would like to see more plays put on with those two. Hit and run plays.
What about Gonsalez? He is not putting up the best numbers for a 10 million dollar pick up. In Comparion to Either. Either is batting 7 points less and has 3 less hits then Gonzo. Not bad for the youngster. They might aswell bring up Kemp.
Kemp has the speed, the power, the arm. He is our next power hitter.
They need to go after Teixera and move Nomar to third. He can bring in the power that he lack.
If i am not mistaking doesn’t Teixera have a history of playing at third base?

The biggest problem with this team that no one in the media cares to comment on is we have a 3 hole hitter with 11 extra base hits for the year. Martin has almost done that in a week. (6 extra base hits in last 5 games)
Enough with the Nomar love. He has not been good for the last calender year.
He is hurting the team and everyone knows it. Even Nomar. You know the rhetoric goes something like he is a gamer, he hits with RISP, he has heart etc. I just don’t agree, those are justifications for playing him, not accomplishments.
Well guys(and girls) I have to say that i am kind of shocked to see such a response to the post by Josh. At first i wanted to get on and get right behind everyone else that was rebelling against the negative comments being made, then i sat back made a couple post on the lineup and our current situation at the top of our division and then sat a watched the entire game as i stated i would in one of my first post of the day. Now when i came back this morning to check up on this Days of Our Lives blog (lol thought that would be funny sorry if it wasnt) to find the good old fight between good and evil. Now after reading all of them so far i saw some things that bothered me and some that just plain made me laugh! I agree with most that it gets bothersome to read all the comments over and over again about JP and his inability to live up to the “over paid” contract he recieved at the beggining of the season, or about the way Nomar cant get out of his funk, or even the on again off again bat of da Gonz (i like that nickname better to pierreseastmeetswest). I also then turned and looked at it from their perspective and the frustration i feel when i see the same thing, also like most have said its not the fact that they are stating the facts (because they are pretty much on target if the frustration comments) but more about the repeating and jumping on it again when it happens during a game, but like i said i can see the frustration on those post because i feel the same way about his contract or their swings!
After a while it got tiresome reading all the posts but i see that the post has worked to some degree that some are starting to see how annoying it is when someone states the same thing everytime they post i.e. the “your whinning about all the negative talk is boring me” (that was a general quote not a specific one) , now u know how we feel sometimes. Then came the climax of the movie the ending of a crazy game in which we thought Derek would strike gold and the Dodgers would go into SD with a great game under their belts (no taking away form the great but nervous win away from our boys). Then last but not least the HAPPY ENDING! The talks between Fisher, Ksspark, and DD17 became somewhat friendlier and then the talks subsided. Now im with you DD17 on the fact that the wisdom of the game does not depend on your age by no means and its nice to see that younger people like us have the guts to say what we feel, even if they are sometimes childish i mean come on were are still young, but i feel that we may know just as much as those who have watched the game for many more years than we have. All in all i still love this blog and i hope things work them selves out and not more veterans leave becasue i enjoy the debates and conversations i read everyday on this blog. It makes me sad to see them go (fansince)!! 😦
But hey back to our boys, i for one would like to see Miggy in the Dodger Blue i mean it makes sense we can get him cheaper than A-Rod, with the exception of loosing some prized possetions but hey it will be better in the long run! Besides the Marlin flourish on young talent so our farm may look pretty darn good to them but are they willing to give up one of their best bats on the team?! I can only hope that Ned at least tries to make a deal with them regarding Miggy!
I also want to thank the boys for giving me a great birthday present last night with a big win to put us atop the divsion. A no-hitter would have been nice but i will take a win anyday! Lets go get them in SD. I really hope Schmidt is back for good and i really hope he does well tonite! Lets hope our bats come alive against Young tonite that guys has been pretty good at home!

jungar i meant to comment back to your post yesterday about the whole RISP thing bugging you but there has to be something said about a guy who leads the entire Major Leagues in that catagorey. Now i am not in any way saying that i want him in the 3 hole because i cannot honesly sit here and say that i would rather have him there instead of Abreu or Martin or anyone else for that matter but i dont make the line-up and neither do you so we have to live with it and watch as he stacks up the RBI’s in any way he can. I mean we took 5 of the last 7 games with the line-up that was put up and i am certainly ok with that. I have said before i think Nomar has one of the ugliest swings in baseball! And its not looking pretty now that he is not hitting the ball regularly!

I think the voice of the silent majority needs to be heard here.
You won’t lose significant readers because commenters are negative. You will lose readers if your posts are irrelevant and/or boring.
Today’s post does nothing for the majority of readers who don’t know and don’t care what commenters are saying. All blogs are divided into two factions; lurkers, who come to the blog to read the bloggers posts and thus be informed and entertained, and commenters, who are a minor subset with little influence over anything but themselves. If the blogger feels the need to repremand commenters, it is best done by either direct email or in the comments themselves.
Take a lesson from Jon who, almost always, has kept his lion-taming reserved to the comments section. He well understand that there are two very different audiences for his blog, and that the silent majority is there for his writing, and his alone. Recently, he has gotten away with repremanding the commenters in his posts, but that is only because his is the best, and knows that commenters actually still read his posts.
I daresay, that after a short period of attrition, many commenters don’t even read the blogs they comment on. Being a prolific commenter provides a symbol of status in an otherwise statusless world. This is not your audience! Keep your posts relevant to the majority and you will keep a large audience. Understand that a blog is not a single homongeneous entity, but a two-headed beast, with very different priorities and motivations.

Here is the thing. Yes we won 5 out of 7 which is awesome!
Some of those games could be blowouts though which would allow for resting players and less stress. Instead I see toppers to the mound (for rbis)
but logically:
Martin with RISP: 7 extra base hits, 31 rbi and hitting .377/.439/.604/1.043
Hitting .312 with a .395Ob with bases empty.
Nomar: 4 extra base hits and 33 rbi and hitting 464/.508/.536/1.043
But .222 .270 OBP with no one on.
So what I am getting at, with stats, is that the drop off between Nomar and Martin with RISP is none. Or very, very minimal. But we can all see the huge difference with no one on base. Our 1, 2, 3 hole hitters need to get on base for Kent, Gonzo and hopefully, Nomar.
I have not changed my mind or conceded to anything, I have just agreed not to be so confrontational i guess… But isn’t the confrontation what makes blogging so fun?
Anyway… SD is going after Adam Dunn…

I completely agree with you concerning the Nomar mania and lack of any reasonable power productivity in the 3 hole. At the risk of repeating myself, which is frowned upon, I believe that Nomar never should have been signed with the type of contract that he has and particularly with the promise that he would have the first base job. After all that Loney had proved last season and in Spring Training, the job should have been his to lose, and if we wanted to sign Nomar, it should have been done with Nomar’s agreement that he would be in a backup or fall-back position only. If Loney was batting third, and I’m not necessarily advocating that, I think he could have replicated the RBI’s and certainly exceeded the power numbers that Nomar has put up. As I’ve said before, I think that signing Nomar was a business decision, because he is recognized as such a big fan favorite in the ballpark and generates the big fan base in LA of Mexican Latinos. I can understand that this will drive a lot of management decisions in his favor, and I do not agree with that. No doubt we will have to live with that, hopefully not to the extent of losing Loney for the future or losing our chance at the World Series for the sake of this expediency.

I was simply replying to jungars post yesterday about how much it bugs him that we make the argument that Nomar is clutch with RISP. He stated: “I hate the RISP arguement.
Why? well I think it’s easier to hit with runners in scoring posistion because…(wait, here is the kicker)because there are RISP!” and sure he is an aggressive but so are many others in the majors and they dont have any were near his average with RISP. I agree with both that he should have been a backup with Loney taking the job after this years Spring but hey hes playing 1st and hitting the ball when it counts. I must say though the last couple RBI’s for him have been pretty pathetic but hey they are RBI’s and they help us win so im not complaining!

I believe Nomar will pick it up a bit in the power department; he really has no where to go but up. His SLG% is way below his career normal, and he’s not so old where he can’t get back somewhere close to his normal rate. .343 SLG right now, but .543 SLG for his career. .505 last year even with the post all-star break struggles. He is 33, going on 34 in July, so he should still have something left. Injury is my guess for his decline this year. Phantom DL trip is in order I’d say. This would let us get another look at Loney, and let Nomar get stronger. Regardless, I believe Nomar will pick it up a bit.

See that last comment of mine? It’s a positive statement and backed up by stats and facts. My biggest problem with most of the positive arguments on here are that they’re fluffy and opinion based. Someone would have argued for Nomar saying that “He’s a gamer” “He’s a vet” “He knows how to win.” And so on… All arbitrary and subjective statements.
Bear, I am with you 100%. I have made that point as well and I too don’t want to repeat myself. I have already just taken the attitide that were stuck with Pierre so make the best of it. I realize Nomar is an ALL STAR and fan favorite so I already resigned myself that he will play and Loney won’t. Cool. Fine. But at some point we have to do what’s best for the team and inserting our best hitter into our most important spot in the line up is all I ask!! Nomar can still hit in the five hole where I think he is better suited to hit in any case, even when he is hitting really well as he usually does.
Unlikely to see Nomar on the DL or changed in the batting order as long as we’re in first place, logical though it may be (jungar, dodgerdude). I, of course, hope that we remain in that first place right through the end of the season, so we’re likely to continue to debate the batting order, or whether there’s some physical problem with Nomar or not. I think that this kind of debate makes for an interesting blog. We don’t necessarily have to agree with the management line on every issue, and I don’t think that this makes the blog negative in any sense.
I was looking at the standings today, and I found the following:
We have scored the second-most runs in the NL West, which is great. The team that scored the most have only scored one run more run than us! So much for us having a bad offense 😉
We’re also tied for allowing the second-fewest runs. That’s great too ( Though the elite pitching staff of the NL West, the Padres, have allowed only 183 runs to our 227 allowed ).
All of that should add up to us sitting pretty atop the NL West, because the team that scored the most runs is not the team that allowed the fewest. So we’re the best, right?
Depends. The team that scored the most runs have also allowed as few as we have. They have 255 scored and 227 against, compared to our 254 scored and 227 against. And know where they rank in the NL West? 6.5 back. They’re the Giants! But for some Martin and Ethier home runs pulling out one-run or extra-inning games for us, there goes us!
All that to say: it is fun to follow this team. Fun, because they win the one-run games and the extra inning games. Those are exciting to win. We didn’t win those often last year. This year, we have a team that doesn’t roll over as easily, that goes for the win. That’s great, that’s fun.
But also, keep an eye on the numbers. We’re only barely, because of a few smiles from Lady Luck, in first place. And the Giants are only 6.5 back because Lady Luck frowned at them a few times. Even though the perception is that they’re a much worse, aged team, they actually paced us almost exactly for runs scored and allowed. They did that with a pitching staff that wasn’t hyped up and an offense of washed up vets. They’ve done almost exactly what we’ve done, just without the close wins. We could have been down there, and that would have made this season a lot less fun.
I’ll be rooting for the Dodgers tonight. They have to play against the odds, having had a late flight and facing the Padres after a day off for them. I back this team to not let itself be beaten by that, to be even more determined to play well because the odds expect them to lose. If today’s performance just gets mailed in, it will be disappointing.

I know that everyone wants to see James Looney in the bigs. But, I don’t think he has what it takes to lift the team like everyone wants to see. Meaning he is a good ballplayer but he hits for average. We need a big power bat, that will hit for homeruns and RBI’s.
We need to go after a big stick. They need Miguel Cabrera or Teixera. We need to get one of these guys for sure!
I would give up Looney for any of these two guys.
But don’t give up any of the young pitching staff. Don’t mess up the pitching staff in the pin.

this is untrue… did you forget about Brazelban? You’ve been reading too much of Bill Plasche’s DePo bashing in the LA Times. That trade got us into the Playoffs that year, and landed us Brad Penny, our best starter by far.
Gagne’s injury started in the spring training of 2005 when he hurt his knee while playing a game of “pepper” His cleat got caught on the ground and he twisted his knee. He insisted he was fine and tried to pitch. He changed his delivery, screwed up his mechanics, and hurt his arm. He continued to be heroically dishonest about it, saying he “never felt better” on several occasions, only to get hurt again. Poor stubborn Eric.

I got such a laugh when I read that maybe Pierre will play better if we support him on this blog. Maybe if when the ball is in the air and heading to CF, we all type, go to your right, not your left dummy, he will!
Also, about Gagne… he pitched exactly 82.1 innings from 2002-2004. He was not used more as a result of that trade. That was one of the better trades in our recent history, even better 3 years later. Martin our catcher now, Penny our best pitcher. If only Hee Seop Choi would have panned out… haha.
I think the reason why Nomar is slumping is because he is playing hurt. Some one else had pointed out that when he swings he would raise his back leg. Your back leg generates alot of your power in your stroke.
So that would explain why he only has one HR. I have noticed that all he does is just trying to make contact with the ball and putting in play. He has not being hitting the ball hard at all. And his swing has being looking really bad lately. I understand that he is a gamer, but he is hurting the team if that is the case. He obviously doesn’t want to loose his job to Looney. Or if the Dodgers do see he is hurt, you know Dodgers are going to panic and would definetly go after Teixera.

He’s an obvious candidate for a promotion, while Billingsley deserves a shot at the starting rotation. There’s also enough talent elsewhere in the system to trade for an upgrade at first base or in a corner outfield spot. Led by Brad Penny (more on him later), the Dodgers are among the league’s elite on the mound. A few well-crafted moves could provide a big lift to the offense — and give the Dodgers the upper hand in the NL West race.

Going after Cabrera or Teixera would be great, provided the deal is reasonable for our side. I would not want A-Rod – great personal statistics, but I don’t see him as a team contributor. I personally have somewhat the same feelings about Nomar in spite of everyone’s special regard for him and in spite of what he proclaims. I would not be surprised that he would play being hurt, because he thinks it is macho even when it hurts the team. I think there was a reason that Boston did not want to continue with Nomar, and it went beyond his statistics. Just my feeling, which obviously can be faulty thinking. I certainly root for him to get that hit whenever there’s anybody on base and to get his power stroke back, but I think he is playing more for Nomar than for the Dodgers, and there are a lot of players focused on themselves in the major leagues, so he would be no exception.

well i’d call him one of the worst hitters in the league myself. The truth hurts sometimes. There is a difference between being a cheerleader and a fan. A fan realizes their team has problems and isn’t afraid to admit it regardless of their spot in the standings. Cheerleaders think their team and players can do no wrong.

yeah serously Jungar, I was sick of Pierre the day we signed him. He has had a couple of good years but those were 5 and 6 years ago. Scouting has really caught up to him.
And he lost his starting job to injury, not because he wasnt playing well. He hit like 400 while here in a few games (admittaly) and yeah he is killing the ball in AAA. But I only want Kemp up to play. Not be Brady Clark.
max i don’t think anyone has a problem with you dissliking pierre. it’s just that every single day you come on here and say it. we know you don’t like him. i don’t think that everyone on here thinks that everything said has to be positive. but the same thing everyday gets real old.

i liked what i read i believe on DT…matt kemp has knocked down the wooden door, now he has steel double doors to knock down. something to that effect. sadly true. first place can sure mask some some glaring weaknesses cant it.
you can provide stats for JP all day….his stats against leftys are especially attrocious…he should just bunt every time, he laid down a nice one yesterday. thats his game, grounders and bunts.

I think it’s fair to wonder why our GM would give 5 years and 50 million to a guy with 12 career homeruns, who the management admitted was iffy on defense and for a guy who has led basbeall in outs and caught stealing for the last 5 years.

The answer they throw in our face all the time to justify their choice is that he gets lots of hits and steals. Well, Max and others(me) dont understand why our guy in charge does not realize that it is at the expsense of making lots of outs.
with absolutely no chance of going yard, its not a stretch to say matt kemp is as fast as JP, with power with an arm. that is the last thing i will ever say on this horribly worrisome subject. ta ta.
Yes, it would do Kemp very little good to come up and sit like Brady Clark. But, Kemp should come up and replace Brady Clark – only he could play one day for Ethier, one for Pierre, and one for DaGonzo, plus some pinch hit assignments and occasional situational play, plus defense in the late innings. I think that would both inspire him and let him develop at the major league level, which I believe he deserves.
I meant, of course, that this would give Kemp three games a week as a starter.
Another reason we should see whether Kemp can do it in the majors is that I don’t see any OF prospects in our minor league system that are hitting much over .300 and with power. If Kemp can’t do it, we better come up with a power hitter in the outfield as well and get some minor league prospects that can develop into power hitters. With the upcoming draft I know it’s popular to say that we should get the best athletes, but maybe we should particularly look for outfielders this year. It is also unfortunate that so many of the young pitchers develop arm troubles early, so you can’t really count on those prospects until they’ve endured the minor league play regimen for a few years.

batters, and inside and low to the RH batters. This to induce a grounder to the left side, for a DP or what ever.
What happens,all of the above batters, swing @ the 1st or 2nd pitch ??? They do NOT wait for a pitch , middle in or middle out, which they could punch the ball to the 1st base side and move or score the runners???Why the devil do we all see this and not Murrey ???? Murray was, of course, an outstanding player in his day, but he may not have the wherewithal to analyze and then impart the correct batting technique to today’s players, most of whom are a great deal younger than he is, so there may even be a communications gap. It has been pointed out a number of times, and I believe accurately, that Murray was fired as a batting coach in Cleveland. Cleveland has been a pretty good hitting team ever since. Coincidence or consequence?
I do see batters swinging early when they have runners on. They are not patient at the plate.
I think their should be more fundamentals. Bunt people over in scoring position, play hit and run. Alot of speed in the #1 and #2 spot. If anyone should have a green light right now it should be Martin and Kent, Oh! Yeah i forgot about Mr. First Ball hitter Nomar. We always play better ball when we get an early lead.

The dodgers drafted pitcher from Santiago High in Garden Grove. I beleive it was like four or five years ago. He was drafted by the dodgers. He was throwing in the Low 90’s in his senior year. His last name is Pilkington, can’t remember his first name though. Does anyone know what happend to that kid?

I noticed that the batting order hasn’t been posted yet, but the only one I’m interested in is Jason Schmidt. I bet everybody got nervous last night when Jon Broxton forgot how to pitch,when they put the weight of this ballclub on his shoulders. It’s okay for the rest of us, to be nervous, but not poor Jon, he has to be himself and forget it’s the 9th inning. That blind flyball, that couldn’t find J.P., didn’t help. but I know Big Bad Jon, can handle it, he’s done it before. GOOD LUCK JON. I have nothing against guys like, Brett Butler, Dave Roberts, Kenny Lofton or Juan Pierre, it’s just that, I feel that the power should come from the 3 outfield positions and first base. But things are looking good out there, Andre Ethier, looks like he’s finally coming around and da Gonz is doing his part. I have to forget that my name sake, is our CF and just look for, bunts, sacrifices, moving runners over getting on base and stealing as many as possible. And all the things he is caberble of doing. As far as comments go. What I think is bad is when someone say, “I don’t like him”, or “We’ll never make it with him” or something like that, and not giving a reason why. Cursing is always a NO. NO. But if we cannot express the way we feel, then there is no reason to have a Blog.

Hopefully that arm can handle the stress tonight. It’s a big early series for this team. 2 of 3 would a success. Sure we’re facing their big guns on the mound, but what are we gonna see when we get to the playoffs?

If so Juan P. keep your head, you will be alright. What i always do when I am in a slump i always try to take the ball up the middle. Your focus is to hit the ball up the middle so if you get pitch outside then you slap it and take it to left field. If you are pitch inside then you pull the ball down the line. I noticed that all leftfielders play you in and at the line. And you hit it their most of the time. You are trying to hard to slap that ball. Take it where it is pitch and be more patient.
By the way Jaun P. my co-workeer (can’t say who) but she has been going to alot of dodger games. She told me that she goes with her freind, I gues you hook up her freind with tickets to dodgers games. Give her and extra one so i can come along.
