Lowe to start Opening Day

Just a few minutes ago, Grady announced that Derek Lowe would start on Opening Day again this year. The rest of the rotation is still to be determined, but for the third straight year, Derek will be on the hill in the first game.

In fact, it’s interesting to note that even with guys like Kevin Brown, Hideo Nomo and the like, the last time the same guy has made three consecutive Opening Day starts for us was 1995-98, when Ramon Martinez started four straight lid-lifters.

I like the move- show a little respect for a guy who really pitched great for us down the stretch last year. I think he will benefit alot from Schmidt being the “ace” of the staff, however…
I cant remember the Dodgers ever having this deep of a staff (assuming Wolf is back to near high 3s ERA/15 win form).

Josh, Would you mind posting a few pictures of the Dodgers’ time at Vero Beach? I enjoyed seeing the Vin Scully-Connie Desmond-Red Barber photo last year. Thanks.

Ray, were a couple. And sometimes if you think some of my comments are on both sides of the fence a bit, thats why. We both love our DODGERS though!!! Her name is on the espn account. Are you a Simpsons fan Ray? Whoever’s team is the Springfield Isotopes in our league is a genius…Definitely dont have problem with Lowe starting opening day, if he pitches like he did the second half were looking good.

Ya, I wouldn’t have a problem with Lowe starting opening day either except for the mere fact that he has lost both opening day games he pitched the past two years. Anyone remember last years game? 5 innings, 7 earned runs- dreadful. I want to see a win when I go this year. Thats all.

hes a whole new pitcher. he was throwing his slider too much. now hes mostly sinkers and cutters or what have you.

Lowe as opening day starter is a good choice !! Heck, any of our 1-4 starters is OK with me. Interesting though that they announced it so early !! I like to see them compete for the honor !!

    Go Dodgers !!

garysmith “Lowe as opening day starter is a good choice !!”

I like the choice as well, specially because that park over there is a launching pad!

  8. garysmith@glsmith.com

I find myself glued to the wires waiting to see if some big name pitcher breaks down so Ned can pull off that big trade !!!

    Go Dodgers

  9. frankjhalstead@hotmail.com

I agree with Gary, would have held off on saying who will be the opening day starter.
Let the guy with the best spring win. Going with what Ned says, you win with more than 25 players, last year proved so right, and this year we can expect more of our prospects to come up and help out. Not trying to be mean, but opening day roster is just that, the 25 best players, not hurt yet. the seson is long, and I look forward to us going to the world series this year with a good balance of youth and vets. thank goodness spring is here, at least in florida, and ariz.

I heard that Oscar Robles was signed yesterday to a minor league contract with San Diego. I really hope he makes the team, he’s one of the good guys you like to see play !!!

    Go Dodgers

Sammy needs a Song and althother this one is below most radars its Very cool and fitting. Sammy hagar and the waboritas live Version of Right on Right recorded live @ Cabo Wabo cantina on His Red Voodoo CD. For those who don’t Know it it starts off with the crowd Chanting SammY SammY follow with a little feedback and about a minute of Very cool Guitar riffs. Its Not all the Fanfare of Welcome to the Jungle but like Saito its low key but packs a punch. Not to mention Saito is a righty just seems to fit all too well.

    Ray,
I’ve never played fantasy baseball but might be interested…what’s the time commitment like? The wife might not be too happy if I spend every day checking stats on my computer.

    Is it a free league?

  15. kssparkuhl@msn.com

Hey Ray… if you end up with several hours to kill, head up 95 a couple of hours and visit “Daytona USA”, the NASCAR museum they have with lots of interactive exhibits. I’ve always wanted to go there too and it’s real close to where you are. Lowe spent sunday at the 500 watching the race from Jeff Gordon’s pit… how cool would THAT have been?

This posted yesterday on SI.com: “Don’t sweat it! MLB turning to cooler, drier polyester blend caps”

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/02/20/bc.bbo.mlb.newcap.ap/index.html

I can’t begin to express how happy I am that the wool hat is finally gone! How many times have I bought a wool cap that never fit quite right? Countless times! You have to buy the wool hat a size or two larger because they will inevitably shrink, and even then, they will shrink some more! They were and are a waste of money! I have my Dodgers’ wool cap collection… at least seven caps… that no longer fit my head after only a few months of use, and I’m not doing steriods!

It’s about time that New ERA enter the 21st Century with a polyester blend cap. All my other poly-blend caps wash well, last much longer and fit like nothing else. Some caps I’ve owned for three years or more and still hold their shape and best of all, they don’t stink like wet wool caps do!

Did I mention how happy I am about this? : ) I’m definitely buying the new baseball cap!

    Go Dodgers!

Go New ERA’s Poly-Blend Baseball Caps!!

  17. nkirby4@cox.net

I am not sold on the new hats just yet. In case you haven’t heard. To make the hat bigger, if or when it shrinks, put the cap on your knee. Logo facing towards you. Pull on the underside of the hat towards your body, so that your knee is bracing the back rim of the hat. You will hear some threads breaking. ITS OK! That’s what you want. By breaking those threads you have made the hat about 1/4″ bigger. Go ahead and use this trick continually if your hat shrinks, the threads won’t snap again but it works like a charm!

Can’t wait to see Penny moved.

  18. nkirby4@cox.net

And if you hate the fact that the wool hats shrink, buy a hat that is 1/4″ bigger and put it on your head everytime you get out of the shower for five minutes or so for a couple days and it will shrink down nicely.

  19. lbirken@aol.com

Could it be that the new polyester hat will mean the end of the well worn sweat stained hats favored by so many players the past few years, like the one Gagne used to wear?

  20. drinkinmercury79@aol.com

Where should we post suggestions for Saito-san no atarashii uta (Saito’s new song)? Closer’s songs are tough to pick, because they must strike fear in the heart of the opposing lineup, which I feel Gagne and Hoffman’s songs do.

One that I think would set the tone good for a closer is the intro riff to “Rock You Like a Hurricane” by the Scorpions. Good strong riff, and the lyrics make it known that the closer means business.

Also, the theme from the Kill Bill movies would be awesome, though the title doesn’t really sound, well, honorable (It’s called “Battle Without Honor or Humanity”, and is by Tomoyasu Hotei). But the music is driving, somewhat relaxing to the incoming pitcher, and has a tone of foreboding to it.

Another one that would work as a pump-up song is “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys. the punk-y guitars are a nice asset.

  21. Dodger

greenie17 – Did you mean old time photos of Dodgertown or current ones? We have current photo galleries on the front page, so please explain what you’re looking for and I’ll see what we can do. Thanks.

  22. fisher928@yahoo.com

I dunno I’ve gone thru my entire 2000+ song computer collection and I really think its more of a personal preferance for Sammy to choose a Song that pumps him up and makes him want to come in and Throw the nasty stuff. I’ve found great closer music that ranges from INXS to AnThRaX. I’d stay off the Kill Bill soundtrack though just because of that Horrible Vonage commercial…. It’s not up to us fans to find music that inspires you its up to you Sammy to inspire us.If you Pitch well without music Then you will always have my support as long as you do it for the Dodgers. The music that Makes you Naturally Wired to pitch is the Music That we (Dodger Fans) will Dance to and Celebrate! You Do What Great Closing pitchers do best and we (fans) will do what what do best!

    GO DODGERS 2007!!!!

  23. dualtone428@yahoo.com

On the hat topic, I have a couple fitted Dodger hats that are too tall for my head. If I pull them down all the way, they go over my ears. Anyone know a way to solve this problem?

  24. kssparkuhl@msn.com

As for Sammy’s Song, I have a few suggestions:

    Thunderstruck – ACDC

    Dr. Feelgood – Motley Crue

    Unchained – Van Halen

    Bodies – Drowning Pool
