1981 Remembered

We just finished up a luncheon and press conference for the 1981 Dodgers, who will be honored at tonight’s game. It’s hard to believe some of those guys are in their 50s and 60s, but time flies. Almost everyone was back here, with the exception of guys like Scioscia, Baker and Lopes, who were coaching elsewhere today.

As for the game, Nomar is out with the injury from last night. We’re still not sure how long he’ll be out of the lineup, but he’s out today. Here it is:

Furcal, SS

Lofton, CF

Lugo, 2B

Kent, 1B

Drew, RF

Betemit, 3B

Ethier, LF

Martin, C

Billingsley, P

Hey Josh… Is Krystal Fernandez as cute in person as she appears to be on TV? And what’s up with that dorky hair cut of yours? 😮 )

It’s sad that Steve Howe won’t be there tonight. He was probably the most instrumental pitcher out of the bullpen in ’81… even if he was doing the “better living through chemistry” lifestyle. His talent was un-matched at the time. Rest in peace Steve.

Peeeew… it stinks in here. Just like a dirty old bear or something.

I have a hunch that Nomar will be out a while.

I like him but I dont think it would be wise to resign him next year with Loney ready and this, Nomar has had a rebound year? with two DL stints and now this…

Is this the overthrow wildness Bills had earlier this year or is it the oblique?

Furcal refuses to let this team lose this month, I’m really impressed by his play.

I think the control issues are easier to fix, this is a big game, his first one back and the big event beforehand – over-excited and over-throwing can happen alot after that kind of thing.

If its the same old thing, they can work him through it. If its the injury, it won’t be resolved right away.

Furcal’s been great in the second half. Maybe he was worth the money, at least this year. Billingsley should have been held till next week, I feel like. 40 pitches, only 18 for strikes in the first, going against a team that did very well against this season in a series that could very easily determine our pennant.

Garciaparra needed more like a couple more weeks off than play on, play off. His day to day is regrettable, but I’m not quite sure if he would have contributely immensely down this stretch.

Again, I do not like the fact that Julio Lugo is batting 3rd. OK, so he had a big game last night, but batting 3rd? Again?

I hope Ethier is as good as new after his ‘long’ break.

well, hes hurt… i hope we can rally and win it, and that bills is ok.. maybe they should shut him down for the rest of the year..

Bills has to be hurting…he wasnt getting any snap of his breaking ball and he was completely bending his back…they should hold him out the rest of the regular season.

Bills clearly not ready. Tnmko, Kent etc… have already shown that this is a 4-6 week injury. That’s pretty common wisdom. Vin knew it, most of the fans who follow baseball knew it- now everyone knows it. Why did no one in the Dodger organization know it? This is too big of a game for a rehab start. This baby is over. By the way Stults stinks- that was a fluke in NY. Sele maybe should have got the call? Rested/pitched pretty well at home.

By the way… for those of you concerned about this: This IS the time for Hamulack and Henderson to pitch. Let them pitch ’till their arms fall off, I say!

So weaver by your post are you advocating signing Nomar to a lengthy and pricey contract? Sure Nomar carried us over the first half! But is that worth signing him for 3 years or so at around 8,9, or 10 mill per.. I dont think carrying a team that wasn’t even in first place for 3 months is worth that… PERIOD!!!!

Luna… something we both can agree on for once. Nomar’s health has been at the forefront of his career for the past three seasons. He’d not be worth the risk for a two or three year contract. If he wants to stay for another year of an incentive-laden contract… then maybe we’d talk.

Sorry guys – I tried. I was yelling at Grady to get Billingsley out of there, but he left him in. No big deal, only three runs, right?

In came Stults and he got rocked. And then it was Tim Homerwhack. The Pads ate him alive. The balls were flying out of the park, resulting in an 8 run third. I was on the road by the top of the 5th – earliest I have EVER left a Dodger game.

I must say that Hendrickson looked real good. He stuck out the side in the top of the 4th. He has NEVER done that before as a Dodger. Hmmm, you don’t suppose…Dear God; did I just think that out loud?

The team flat gave up early. (Of course a ten run deficit can do that to you). The only guy who appeared to keep focus was Jeff Kent, but Grady yanked him and the rest of the starting line in the top of the 4th. That was the white flag.

Oh well, let’s regroup for tomorrow and get it back to 1 1/2. Time to wash the clothes.

    GO DODGERS!

PS: Hey Grady – OK you can let Hendrickson back into the ballpark, BUT DO NOT EVER LET TIM HOMERWHACK IN!

PPS: It was GREAT to see the 1981 World Champion Dodgers tonight. Brought back some great memories.

It’s OK (53) you did your best. It was probably my fault as I was’nt rooting here at home, I was rooting for my other passion-U.S.C. football. I’ll be back rooting full force for dodgers today. Go Blue.

Thanx ’53, you did your best.
I was yelling at Little, too, but I don’t think he can hear me from here.

    Like the man said:

    Sometimes you win

    Sometimes you lose

    And Sometimes it rains

Still in decent shape. Time for Lowe to earn $500,000 or so.

I was hoping to build the lead back up to a point the final with the giants wouldn’t matter, but this one will probably go right down to the wire.

Isn’t GS and some others also going to the game today? You guys get ’em.

    IT’S TIME GRADY!

It’s time to go to a four-man rotation for the final 14 games (starting today): Lowe, Penny, Kuo, and Maddux. If any of the four give up three runs in an inning and put another one or two on base, bring in Hendrickson (there I go again), Stults, or Billingsley as long relievers.

With 9/25 being a day off, all four would get an extra day between starts and Maddux would still get five days between two of his three remaining starts. Here’s what I’m talking about:

    Sun, 9/17 – SD – Lowe

    Mon, 9/18 – SD – Penny

    Tue, 9/19 – Pit – Kuo

Wed, 9/20 – Pit – Maddux (he’s already had 5 days because of Billingsley’s disaster)

    Thu, 9/21 – Pit – Lowe

    Fri, 9/22 – Ari – Penny

    Sat, 9/23 – Ari – Kuo

Sun, 9/24 – Ari – Maddux (the final home game of the season – a deserving start for him)

    Mon, 9/25 – Off Day

    Tue, 9/26 – Col – Lowe

    Wed, 9/27 – Col – Penny

    Thu, 9/28 – Col – Kuo

    Fri, 9/29 – SF – Maddux

    Sat, 9/30 – SF – Lowe

    Sun, 10/1 – SF – Penny

It’s Do or Die time Grady. WE NEED TO GO AFTER THE TITLE! Nobody is going to roll over and hand it to us.

    GO DODGERS!

PS: Hey kday01, you and I have another one in common – GO TROJANS!
