Ned's extension...
Certainly the good news of the day came from our workouts, where Ned was signed to a long-term extension. Given all that we've accomplished over the last four years, I'm thrilled about this and the fact that we'll have some continuity within the front office for a long time to come. I hope you'll all join me in congratulating Ned...
Of course, this comes on the heels of the toughest loss that I think I've been a part of as a Dodger fan. Jon Weisman has a healthy way of viewing things and I tend to approach this stuff the same way he does. It hurts, a lot, but this series isn't over. We've got to win tomorrow and then see where it goes from here.
Over at Psychollingy, Steve Lyons shared his thoughts from last night and yes, he felt the pain, too.
But tomorrow is a new day. And for the first time this year, we have an actual must-win game.

Wow, you're right. Tomorrow is the first must-win all year... No time for a dress rehearsal, I dont think.
I'm already in shutdown mode.
See you all at Camelback next year, and please tell Broxton to just stay home.

I agree with Scott's post from October 20, 2009 12:05 PM. I would like to add that I feel that Broxton has a closer's arm but not a closer psyche. Hopefully he can develop that in time. Also after Martin singled to tie the score at 2 in the 4th Casey Blake grounded out to end the inning. Wouldn't it have been nice if he would have gotten a bases clearing double. It seems lately we never get the big hit to open up the lead. We are always going into the 9th with either a 1 or 2 run lead and Broxton never has any margin for error. Tomorrow I will root like crazy for the Dodgers, but after last night I don't have any confidence in them to win one game let alone three.

I'm sure the other 29 GM's are very happy with Ned's extension.
Report any abuse or spam
One last note on tomorrow's game. Will a Dodgers pitcher please pitch inside tomorrow? Retribution is best served warm, and if I remember correctly Martin got plunked square in the middle of the back and Shane Victorino tried to take out James Loney with a flying shoulder block and cry that it was fielders interference. Someone needs to shut that little twerp up already!

My message to Ned is still F You, and contract extension or not, you'll be gone when the ownership changes.
My comment was actually the first on this thread, but Josh apparently didn't like my comment, so it was removed from the thread. So, whoever is doing the censoring, F You too.

Good for Ned. Congratulations, after cleaning up DePodesta's mess, and making our team prime-time players again, all while being held at checkbook-point to a shoestring budget, he deserves it.
I don't know how well he'll do, though, when those crybaby, juvenile, Dodger fan hating-and-swindling, LOOK AT ME-ing, ME FIRST-ing, LOOK WHAT I CAN DO-ing, WE'RE BIGGER THAN BECKHAM AND POSH-ing, skinflint, about-to-destroy-our-beloved-franchise-ing, carpetbagging, Frontiere-ing, hornswaggling, hotdogging, bickering, backstabbing, I'll-do-whatever-it-takes-to-keep-the-team-even-though-I-never-had-the-money-nor-the-knowledge-to-run-a-baseball-franchise-let-alone-go-through-a-now-high-profile-divorce-ing, Gee-I-wish-I-had-bought-the-Red-Sox-but-the-Dodgers-are-a-good-enough-silver-medal-I-guess-ing, destroyer of Dodger dreams, clueless of what it means to be a Dodgers fan-ing, about-to-get-Maury-Povich-in-here-ing owner/owners of ours (because who knows what's what, I'm still having trouble making out how these two hoity-toity carpetbaggers got their hands on OUR Dodgers in the first place) will only have lint and bits of string to not only add anything to our club, but to patch up when the young core that was nurtured in Blue will be spread out among the other 29 clubs when they can't afford them.
The McCourts, who I was coming around to like rather much, have REALLY disappointed me. Their spotlight grabbing, which was once a minor annoyance, is now poised to destroy OUR team. And I feel I'm justified in my no-obsenities rant against them, because it's my lifelong favorite squad that they're destroying. My NBA Lakers? Nada. My NFL Raiders? Bupkess, but at least they can beat Philly. Hockey? Sorry, the sport should go back to the country that adores, obsesses over and misses it. The Dodgers, to me, are only below my spirituality and above the Beatles. You mess with them, and I'm not going to sit and take it.
Now, the embarassment we will feel in the offseason will make Broxton's meltdown and the phanatical hating on this blog like two small spots on the windshield left by angry insects who bit off more than they could chew. So yeah, I stand by it, even after waiting 15 minutes to see if my feelings had subsided... nope, not one bit.
New owners? HA! We all know they'd rather run our team into the ground in shambles with their names attached, charging us $35 to sit in the Pavillion, than sell it. Because how can you be hoity-toity carpetbaggers when you have nothing in your name, and even the profession that put your foot through the door (on Bud Selig's happiest day, I'm sure) has gone belly up? And you thought that O'Malley-Rickey divorce was bad...
Aside from all that, Game 5's gonna be a breeze. And no Philly sycophants can do anything to make me feel otherwise, because it HAS to be this year, and if they can't win 3 games, then they didn't deserve it anyways. And they want it. 3-1 is not impossible, just improbable, and probablility has taken a beating from our boys in Blue this year. I'm sure they have more in 'em.

Nothing can stop me now, I just don't care"

I'm not making promises, but I've got a feeling about this team. A feeling that won't be shaken 'til the last breath of the 2009 season.

It's now just one game at a time. What do we have to lose - I think everybody but the most staunch Dodger fan has written us off. Everybody should really be loose now. Just go about winning tomorrow's game. I would make a couple of changes, however. O'Dog needs to play. He was such an integral part of the best part of our season. Blake needs to sit, as he has been very ineffective offensively in this series. Much as I hate to say it, let's see if Loretta can find the touch for one game. And above all - don't ever let Sherrill go near the pitching mound again in a Dodger uniform.

Report any abuse or spam
Kahli, those articles sure had a lot of anger in them. Now I am just as disappointed as the next fan about how this series is going but I am not angry. Yes, I don't feel good about things but I am not going to get angry and nasty about it! I am going to try to control that because it is just wasted energy. I will be a bit depressed at coming so close if the Dodgers come out on the short end but I am still not going to call up a talk show and scream about it. I know the players are trying hard to win. Sometimes things just don't work out the way you want.
One of the prices we pay as sports fans (and shared by the players as well) is the pain and frustration of losing. We identify with our teams and want them to win because it makes us feel good, almost as if we had played the game ourselves. I know I sometimes feel exhausted after a close and exciting game, especially games I attend in person. The players learn to leave it on the field but many fans find that hard to do. But no matter what, I will be back to support my team the next time out because I am always hopeful that the next game or season will be better than the last or at least as entertaining. Win or lose, the Dodgers have certainly entertained us this season even if they have teased us with that sucess.

Hi Everybody
I just came on to see what Messagebear had to say about Colletti's multi-year extention.
I wish I could've saw his original comment.
When I read about Colletti, Bear was the first one I thought about.
I for one am very pleased.
Colletti made a lot poor acquisitions at first, who doesn't?
But I feel he more than made up for them during the last offseason and recently.
He may not be in the class of Branch Rickey, Fresco Thompson, Busy Bavasi, Al Campanis -just yet- but he's getting there. GO DODGERS!!!!
TBW and I will watch the game from the restaurant tomorrow night, rooting dem Bums on.
And I'll be rooting 'til the fat lady sings, 'til there's nothing left to root for.
At that point, regardless of how it ends, I'll stand up proudly for my team.

Hello Gang!! Nice post Kahli!! I echo your sentiments. I was not angry last night. Just very sad and disheartened. As someone posted earlier, anger is just a huge waste of energy!! We're still in it. Let's win this game 5 and take it back to LA!!! Let the chips fall where they may. Regardless of the outcome, I too, will be proud to fly Dodger colors as I have since 1965!!! I am proud of our team. It's been a great season. We got some growin' to do, but we are much better off than back in the Fox/DePodesta days!!! I like our chances tomorrow.

I really can't comment on the Ned extension, as my mother always told me, If you can't say anything good, don't say anything!!! I give him a straight C on his performance so far. All I can say is, that if we didn't have two candidates in our front office that I believe are better equipped for the job, I would probably feel better about it.
Report any abuse or spam
lbirken, agree with BOTH your posts. Well done. I had ZERO anger last night. No scapegoats, no blame. Just a lot of sad depression, the horrible specter of a Dodger season coming closer to an end. It's not the fleeting championship I mourn for, but rather, the impending bye-bye to my summer "friends," Vinny included. I've enjoyed myself for 40 years, each and every summer, and it's ALWAYS sad when it ends, whether the calendar reads 1988 or 2009. And let me say one more time what a pleasure it was to spend a few moments with you at the ITD tour in June. All that said.........let's get this thing back to L.A.!!!!! If the Dodgers can do that, the Phils' collars will tighten with each and every at-bat.

As the lyricist for "Nedsterado" (Why don't you come to your senses ... You've been out signing veterans for too long now ...), I think I'm qualified to say that I think Colletti has done a very good job these last couple of years.
.
Getting Manny for essentially Andy LaRoche last year and then signing him for a 2-year-stint this past off-season was excellent work (Nobody knew then that Manny was a juicer); resisting the constant temptation to break up the youngsters; locking down Furcal for three years; picking up Orlando Hudson for a song; adding Thome, Sherrill, Padilla, and Ronnie Belliard while giving up basically Josh Bell and not much more.
.
We all know that The Nedster got off to a horrible start as Dodgers GM -- think Jason Schidt -- but I think he has righted the ship since.
.
Congratulations, Ned, on a job well done and your new contract!

P.S. If you're reading this JoJo, don't think you're anywhere near out of the doghouse. Anything this team does will be not because of you, but overcoming you.
.
I'll give you this much credit -- you finally figured out that Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp are better than Juan Pierre. Of course, 47 of 48 fans polled on this board at the beginning of Spring Training 2008 knew that, so it's hard to give you much credit for figuring it out in a year-and-a-half.

Wally - I am not sure where he is, and yes, he was just plain disgusted but that was after the 11-0 game. This last game may have sent him into a Koolaid binge for a while. However, honestly, I am assuming most of it is he is busy getting ready to become a California resident once again.

P.P.S If you're reading this Juan Pierre, you've earned the right to be called by your proper name. My problem with you was never so much with your popgun power, low OBP, or noodle arm as it was with the stupid managers who kept playing you over far better players. Of course, your whining did contribute to that.
.
But this year you've kept your mouth shut and played pretty good ball. You and I both know that you only played really well for about three weeks -- not the 50 games some ill-informed fans like to believe. But you've been an important piece of this team this year. So thank you.

Ned, now that you're here to stay, here's my 2ยข. Win, lose, or draw this season, deep down, I think we both knew the Dodgers were still a year away. Manny was the priority ticket last winter; no one could foresee the suspension and decline in skills. So I figure you envisioned Joe and Manny back for a swan song in 2010 (when the kids would have come of age) and perhaps an ace could be had. Maybe you never saw the Frank and Jamie blindside coming, either. Only you guys know whether costs were, um, shall we say, "tethered" this season. So 2010, the year we make contact...or something like that. No more pressure on you to perform, no more looking over your shoulder. You got your vote of confidence in the bank. Hell, if the Dodgers get lucky, maybe Donnie Baseball takes that Cleveland job and we can clean house on interlopers starting in 2011. Hell, by then the Dodger dynasty should be in full swing with Ethier, Kemp and Loney anchoring the offense, Kershaw dealing, and new pitching coach Orel Hershiser teaching Billingsley how to approach a game and maybe even teaching Broxton how to throw a stinking change-up.

We have McCourt separation, mattingly interview for mangement, Ng interview, Neds contract extension and Manny's shower. Thanks mlb.com for the news we need most.
