Lineups? You want lineups?
Let's be honest, how important is tonight's lineup? In the grand scheme of things, not all that important, but let's see if we can learn some things in the next three days that will benefit the team next week.
In case somehow you aren't aware, Sunday night at 6 p.m. is a free postseason rally at Dodger Stadium. Free parking, free event and $2 hot dogs, cokes, peanuts and nachos. The players will be coming back from San Francisco and should be making an appearance around 8 p.m. or so...gates open at 5 p.m., so hopefully you'll all be there.
Game 3 is officially sold out but some tickets remain for Game 4 at Dodger Stadium.
And finally, everyone's favorite restaurant reviewer is up for the Pepsi Clutch Player of the Month and it's up to you all to vote for him. For those new to the blog, that means Andre Ethier.
Here's who'll take the field tonight in SF... (new updated version)
Furcal, SS
DeWitt, 3B
Manny, LF
Kent, 2B
Ethier, RF
Loney, 1B
Pierre, CF
Ardoin, C
Lowe, P

Well, this is sure an unusual lineup. Hope it works well enough to win the game. I hate the Giants!
Report any abuse or spam
Just voted for Dre as the clutch performer. Best of luck to you Andre, you really deserve the recognition!
Report any abuse or spam
I will repeat something I posted a few days ago. Manny has been great but if I had a vote for Dodger MVP I might have to give half a vote to Andre.
Report any abuse or spam
lbirken ~ I think so too. In a way Andre has given Manny lots of pitches to see, when he was batting 2nd, by taking lots of pitches.........and, now has shown, he can hit cleanup to boot!
Report any abuse or spam
The first thing I thought about when I saw this line-up was, I hope Martin doesn't get rusty.
Hummm"The Pepsi Clutch Player of the month". I'm glad you folks down south know there is another soda besides Coca Cola.
Of course 'DRE gets my vote.
This should be a nice little exhibition between the Dees & the Gees, although there is many things at stake, playerwise.
I would like to say, although many on this blog have voiced themselves differently, that I think Joe Torre, who grew up not far from me, has done a great job.
The Yankees are not giving him much credit, especially the fans, saying that The Dodgers are in a weak division.
Boy I wish they weren't eliminated.
IT'S TIME TO BE RECOGNIZED.

Damn Yankees you don't need Kemp.

This debate is unreal. Can't we have 2 other candidates? lol
Onto baseball. GO BLUE!
Cant wait till next week!
Report any abuse or spam
i wouldn't worry much about that article written about the yanks interest in matt kemp, sl. new york writers are always on the lookout for emerging stars on other teams to spew their pipe dreams about in the media. the notion that the dodgers would send kemp to the yankees for a package including robinson cano is asinine to say the least. if the dodgers refused to include kemp in a deal for johan santana, what makes heyman believe they'll use him to acquire a guy who has an OPS of a tick above .700 this year is beyond me. go blue.
Report any abuse or spam
I don't think we was talking to Twins for Santana at all. I remember Boston was asking for Broxton and Kemp for Manny last year and who would had guessed we still have all 3 of this team.
Report any abuse or spam
I think im going to go to the postseason rally just to tell people that I parked at Dodger Stadium FOR FREE! Might as well enjoy it while you can because you know its going to be even more expensive next year.

scurtis I was so bored, I caught myself falling asleep during the debate. It reminds me of what Lewis Black said about the last election going into the voting booth, and having to choose between two bowls of s**t. It's just a matter of which one smells worse.

Eric ~ I know. If they had a box we could mark "none of the above" I'd do it! We set a record for the most posts a week ago, and today I bet we set a record for the least lol

I feel sorry for you guys that watched the debate or tried too. I was mad because it was on during the time The Simpsons is usually on. Regardless of who gets elected the country is screwed.

Max ~ It made a mess of all of my television programming too. lol Of all the people in the United States, those two are what we are stuck with.....yuck!

Well trublue what do you expect. This is a country that elected George Bush twice. It's sad how the election process has become a reality show almost. If the founder fathers were still alive today they'd be disgusted. If all we get to choose from is the socialism of the Democrats or the fascism of the Republican's why have an electoral process?

You are right, Max! I used to take my voting priviledge seriously, but it gets harder to choose the lesser of two evils nowadays.

The Mets lost.......Phillies and Brewers won...........getting interesting!
Report any abuse or spam
I still take my voting priviledges seriously. It's just amazing to me how we have such lousy candidates so consistantly. But as bad as most have them have been in my lifetime, we're still here, aren't we? Trudging along into oblivion! LOL!!! Bring on the Toy Department! I need my escape from reality!

In this part of ther 'Bible Belt' where I live, the ignorant blind loyalty to the republican party backed by these HUGE 'megachurches' is frightening. Basically NO separation of church, and state is just scary.
Report any abuse or spam
I think we are lucky that whoever has been President , he has chosen his cabinet wisely. I still vote in every election, local or otherwise and I too, take it very seriously.
Report any abuse or spam
Well trublue, the lesser of two evils is still evil. Eric, oblivion is only a couple years away. Once this bailout passes the country will be in an even worse shape a couple of years from now. With the way the government is devaluing the dollars I wouldn't be surprised if it collapses eventually or if we have another depression in the next 3 to 5 years.

I wonder how many other banks will fail? WAMU was taken over today.........and, you are right about the shape of the country. I remember when politicians did what was best for the people and not their own party.

McDonald has done well with what little opportunity has been handed to him. Live arm & changes speeds well. It's sad, but I don't think he'll make the post season roster. Not enough appearances to merit that quite yet.

Tru ~ When I heard about the WAMU collapse, I got as nervous as a ***** in church! They have been my primary bank for years. Never had any problems with them, like I had with B of A, and others. They were always helpfull with everything. But, with almost $17 billion withdrawn in a 10 day span, I guess it was inevitable. Great bank with great people working for them for the most part. Just terrible mismanagement by the execs at the top of their food chain.

Must be a funky ground rule in that stupid ballpark to call that a home run. There's no nice yellow line for the ball to hit above. The ball wasn't interferred with. The ball bounced back onto the field.

I just realized I was posting comments on last night's thread by mistake, lol. Anyway, I don't see how that can be called a home run. It didn't look like it hit the top of the wall and definitely didn't go out. So much for instant replay. Goodnight Amy. Glad you had fun last night.

Report any abuse or spam
Proctor was terrible! Pitiful! I have a bad feeling Joe will have him on the post season roster.
I just saw the replay of Molina's botched call of a HR on sportscenter. That was a gift!
Report any abuse or spam
Molina hit a ball to the right field wall. It hit high up, looked like it hit the edge of a covering of the wall. If it hit 3 inches higher, it would have bounced into the stands. No-brainer HR. But it hit the edge and bounced back onto the field and he was held to a single, runner stopped at third. Bochy protested that it was a HR. Umps got together and they all disappeared under the stands to do the new replay thing. They were in there for a few minutes and when they came out, they ruled a HR. As I said earlier, there is no line painted at the top of the wall so there must be a ground rule at that park that says if it hits that covering, it's out.
Now for the really stupid thing. When the action stopped and it was still a single, Bochy put in a runner for Molina. After the HR was ruled, Bochy came back out and, as Vin was trying to figure for us, tried to argue that his pinch runner shouldn't have to had been used. The umps talked about that longer than the HR. Bochy lost that argument. So, the PR was officially in the game, and therefore scored the run. Molina gets credit for hitting a HR, but does NOT get credit for scoring a run!

Trublue, I kept wondering where everyone else was and why I was the only one commenting, lol.

Report any abuse or spam
SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—For just the second time since baseball began using instant replay, an on-field call was overturned when Bengie Molina of the San Francisco Giants was given a home run Friday night after it was initially ruled a single.
The two-run shot to right field tied the game with the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Molina lined the first pitch from Scott Proctor to the top of the brick facade in right and the ball ricocheted back to the grass in right field.
Molina stayed at first and Emmanuel Burriss rushed out to pinch run, while Giants manager Bruce Bochy hustled out to argue. After a brief discussion, the umpiring crew headed to the replay booth in the umpires room behind home plate.
After about two minutes, they returned and crew chief Tim Welke signaled the home run. Dodgers manager Joe Torre then came out to discuss the situation.
After a total delay of about 15 minutes, the umpiring crew ruled Burriss had to stay in the game and he was credited for the run scored, prompting San Francisco to play the remainder of the game under protest.
This marked the seventh time this year that replay had been used and the second time Friday. The other call that was reversed was on Sept. 19, when Tampa Bay’s Carlos Pena was awarded a home run that was originally ruled a double.
Replay was used for the first time at the Giants’ waterfront ballpark. There also was replay used Friday in the Nationals-Phillies game at Philadelphia.
The system that allows umpires to determine boundary calls went into use on Aug. 28.

JoePierre ~ you are having an awful time tonight! It's the case of when one thing goes, everything bad follows.

Do Burriss get credit for the homerun? Why protest it doesn't going to make a big different?

shads' post of the AP report is right on except for the part where "Dodgers manager Joe Torre then came out to discuss the situation." The ump walked over to the dugout and told Torre what was going on. Torre shrugged. He didn't seem to care. What the heck, it's like a spring training game anyway! LOL!

JJ ~ they said Penny just left the team.........no goodbye or anything......what an ***. Park hasn't looked very good lately. I'm a little worried about our relief pitching. I do like Wade. Brox is good but makes me very nervous and I just hope we can have the old Saito back for at least and inning each game.
Report any abuse or spam
Dodgers are looking a little too loose right now. We don't want to end the season on a losing streak.
Report any abuse or spam
I agree. This is the wrong time for the bullpen to go south like this. Maybe too much bubbly was consumed last night. Who knows?
Report any abuse or spam
Wow, I didn't know that about Ichiro. I thought he was a good guy. Shows how much I know about the Junior circuit.
Anyway, before I was distracted, I think if we're going to keep Nomar and Kent and Furcal (which looks very possible), that's a lot of potentially part-timers. We need some defensive replacements. I don't think we can afford an 11-man staff. I think we could go with 10 and a 3-man rotation will work with all the usuall off-days in the playoffs. These 10:
Beimel
Billz
Brox
Kershaw
Kuroda
Lowe
Maddux
Park
Saito
Wade
Starters are Lowe, Billz and Kuroda. If Kuo can go, Maddux should bow out. IMO.

Eric ~ that lineup of pitching looks good. I, too, think we need more bench players and hitters than so-so pitchers.
.
.
As far as Ichiro goes, that was what the baseball tonight guys said about him.........however, Tim said he wouldn't care what he did if he got 200 hits. The main gripe was he didn't take a lot of pitches, like most lead off hitters do.........and he was not much of a team guy. But, who knows for sure?
Report any abuse or spam
I'm with you Pierre!
Report any abuse or spam
Good Penny I hope we never see you back in an LA uniform again.
Report any abuse or spam
Jeez, the guy's hitting .311 with a .362 OBP, 99 runs scored on a crappy team. He's only hitting .297 when he hits the first pitch, but .394 on a 0-1 count and .437 when it's 1-0.
This "taking pitches" credo is a little overrated, IMO.
Report any abuse or spam
If you (Penny) were injured, not pitching in the playoffs, and your option wasn't picked up for next year, you'd be a bit pissed off, too. I'm not saying Penny could'nt have been a little more professional in his attitude but it is what it is.

I'm not giving up on Brox being the closer, Eric, but he's just too inconsistent of late. When Wade comes in, I get the same feeling I used to when Gagne was in him prime. I just feel like chances are we will get out of the inning. He doesn't throw as hard as Brox, but he had the right mental approach.

bcGIRL, I'm for giving him a shot to close tomorrow or Sunday if the opportunity presents itself. Brox has usually been lights-out as the setup guy, but he's never seemed too comfortable as the closer. You've got to have the right mental makeup to close out games and I don't know if he's got it.
Report any abuse or spam
And goodnight vl & seesky!
Report any abuse or spam
I agree Brox seems more comfortable as the set up man. I was at the last game before the All Star break and Wade pitched the top of the 9th in that game and did fine.
Report any abuse or spam
I just don't see Torre using Wade as the closer, unfortunately.
Report any abuse or spam
Agreed, it probably won't happen. I think they're grooming him to be a set up man for Brox. Either way, Wade has been one of the best surprises of the season for the Dodgers.
Report any abuse or spam
No doubt, but I guess you'd have to be in the clubhouse to know what he's like mentally right now. He can't be in a "good place" right now at the worst possible time. I hope I'm wrong, because I don't think we're going to have a lot of 10 - 1 victories in the playoffs.

I don't know why, but I have a good feeling about our chances in the playoffs.

If we can protect him, if we can have our guys step up, if we get the pitching that our guys are capable of, we can play great ball for a few weeks and take this. Why not? JoePierre, you can tell by those numbers that the division was a lot tougher last year. I remember a somewhat recent year we finished 92-70 and missed the playoffs. I'm glad the Dodgers took advantage of the oppurtunity that the DBags kept laying at their feet.

Good morning ITD (about to be good night for me, pulled an all-nighter). I just wanted to share this article about Kim Ng being eyed by the Mariners. Here's the first paragraph, followed by the link:
Dodgers assistant GM Ng considered an option for 'gender blind' Mariners
SEATTLE -- Seattle Mariners president Chuck Armstrong said his team is vetting a wide range of general manager candidates, pointedly leaving open the possibility of Seattle hiring the first female general manager in major league history.
Highly regarded Los Angeles Dodgers assistant GM Kim Ng is considered an option.

I've always thought if a good team scores 5, that should be enough to win. I know the game did not mean much, but to give up 6 runs to those stiffs galls me.
I personally do not think Kent should start, but It's very encouraging to see he is hitting. If we have a successful post season, he'll likely make a big contribution off the bench.

It may be an oversimplified assessment, but I think that Brox, like Penny and Andruw, is overweight and out of shape, and tends to be worn out by the end of the season - just like he did last year. I would assign him a personal trainer and order him to lose 20-30 lbs. by Spring Training.

Good morning ITDland ~ We should have won that game last night. Our bullpen faultered and better get things straightened out before the playoffs begin. Wade is the only bright spot in there. I hope Joe makes wise choices for his playoff roster.

good morning ITD!! ok so I have to tell you all about my experience at the game thursday!!!
.
first off, it started off REALLY BAD!!! we ran into some problems before we left & ended up not leaving till an hour before the game starts.. then we hit SO much traffic that we didn't get to the stadium till the bottom of the 5th! & we didn't get to our seats till the top of the 6th! since we got there so late they had already taken Manny out (he's my friends favorite player) BUT i DID get to see my boy 'Dre for half an inning!! which is good enough for me!! then when it got to about the bottom of the 8th some people had left so me & my friend moved up to the front. After the game was over we stayed for all the celebration!!! when Russy, Matty, DY, Manny, & Nomar came out & started spraying the crowd we tried to get down there but EVERY staircase had someone watching it! so we finally saw one that didn't have anyone standing by it & we decided to go down it... which led us to a huge, long, dark, hallway with a bunch of doors.... right away i said "ummm... i don't think we should be down here..." HAHA!! so we didn't get to see all of them up close or get sprayed with beer... BUT it was SO AWSOME to see our boys having SSOOOO much fun and with the BIGGEST smiles on there faces!!! so after all that was over, me and my friend went on a hunt to find a calendar! we went to EVERY exit we could think of & EVERY ONE WAS OUT!!! finally at our last exit (which was the VERY top of the stadium) we decided to give up & start heading for our car. As we were walking down some stairs, they had mesh on the fence so it was hard to see through we noticed people sitting on the stairs like they were waiting for something, so we asked "are the players around or something?" a lady responded "this is where they come out of the stadium & go to their cars" so OF COURSE me & my friend waited!!! haha! ALSO the same lady had like 5 calendars & was kind enough to give me one so i did get my calendar!!! after about half an hour standing there we saw Manny and JP walk out!!! we didn't get any signatures cause later we realized we were standing in the wrong spot... but anyways we also saw Cory Wade come out dressed like a girl!! haha! & by then a security guard saw all of us standing there & asked us to leave. So we were headed for our car & by then it was passed midnight! there were ONLY 3 CARS IN THE PARKING LOT!!! including ours!! we get to the car &.... my friends key isn't working... it needs a triple A battery... so i start getting a little worried but right then we saw a parking lot security driving around so we wave him down & ask him for a AAA battery, he says "wait let me radio someone" AS he's "radioing" someone my friends key works!! i was like THANK GOD!!! & we thanked the security guard & were on our way... so yeah that was a lot of awesome, funny, scary, memmories that i will never forget!!! WE DID IT!!! OUR BOYS DESERVE THIS!!! NL WEST CHAMPIONS... LOS ANGELES DODGERS!!! it was so great to be there & watch all that happened!!! good times good times!!
.
I'm going sunday to the rally! i can't wait!!!

just saw this on yahoo...
(Man accused of posing as Dodger on field)
A man faces criminal charges for allegedly stealing a uniform from Dodger Stadium and posing as one of the team's players.
Ronald Higgins pleaded not guilty to several charges Friday, including burglary and trespassing.
The 47-year-old Higgins was arrested Wednesday morning after a security guard found him walking on the field in a Dodgers uniform and holding a glove with two balls. Higgins allegedly identified himself as a Dodgers player, but the guard recognized him from an earlier incident and called police.
Prosecutors say Higgins' clothes were later found in the bat boys' locker room. It was not immediately clear where he got the uniform.
If convicted, Higgins could spend nearly four years in state prison.
Attempts to locate an attorney for Higgins were not successful Friday night.

So that's why all of us in attendance the last day didn't get a calendar because some greedy people took more than one. I wanted to get one to send to Dnelly for her class. Oh brother.

R. Winn singled to right
E. Velez grounded into fielder's choice, R. Winn out at second
- E. Velez stole second, E. Velez to third on R. Martin's throwing error
- S. McClain walked
- S. Holm hit sacrifice fly to left, E. Velez scored, S. McClain to second
- R. Aurilia struck out swinging
Why did Martin had to throw that ball? Of course we should had won this game.

I just can't believe how lucky the Giants are. We should had won those 2 in SF and that 1-0 games last week and last night and gosh I hate losing to those fool.

Hey folks, it's not the time to panic about our boy Broxton. We got this far with him and we can win the World Series with him. IMO, he's just fine. It was a meaningless game last night set up by an "off day" lineup, and then sometimes stuff happens. Saito's still not a hundred percent and that's unfortunate for the team.
However, if we look again last night and remove the heavy emotion from the equation, you'll see that Broxton pitched well enought to have gotten out of the inning with the save. Am I really the only one here to have seen it that way though? Check out the facts as they unfolded. The guy gave up one hit (to the first batter. what does that usually say? defensive melt down.) and one walk on the inning (to a batter that had a 12-pitch at bat AND who's run didn't matter anyway... and it helped to set up a force at second if necessary). But...
lest we forget, if Pablo Ozuna had managed to get off a decent throw to first, he would have completed the double play after a great pitch that Broxton threw in on Velez that broke his bat, or... if Russell Martin's throw down to second base didn't end up in the San Francisco bay, then Velez wouldn't have ended up as the tying run at third base to begin with... which set up the sacrifice fly. So then Pierre's catch would have been the second out of the inning where Velez should have been at second... Rich Aurelia then strikes out for the third out. Game over. It's a team sport folks. A closer is only as good as the defense will allow him to be. He can't strike everyone out.
Russell Martin gets a pass yesterday just because he's Russell Martin? IMO, he's more culpable than Broxton for allowing the tying run to move to third base in sac-fly position in this instance. I don't know what's going on with Russ... but Russell Martin needs to gain cotrol of that arm of his again. What's happened to him this year?? I've seen more wild throws from him this season than any Dodger catcher I can remember in recent memory. That was a great freaking home run Russell... it was absolutely epic (my throat is actually hoarse this morning!) Next time however, keep the throw down to second somewhere in the neighborhood of the base and maybe that home run might have actually helped get your team the "W".
Bottom line... it was a tough loss in a meaningless game that was brought about in dramatic fashion, set up by a weakened lineup that was meant to get the team ready for the playoffs. It's a team loss as much as they're team wins. Broxton is ready for the post-season, IMO. He should have gotten that save.
This is going to be a fun post-season!! Keep the faith!!

Good afternoon all...Alot of people are freaking out over the last 2 games...They have had a letdown...who would not..it is sort of like the last 2 or 3 days of work just before vacation....Broxton will be ok, he has learned alot and has performed admirably...I wish he had a little better command but he will be ok..Saito, I do not feel he is ready to close again..
Wade, I have read alot of praise for him and with good reason, but doing it in the 6-8th innings is alot easier than the 9th.
As for Martin he has had a tough year behind the plate and has been inconsistent at the plate...but he is still the heart of the team and will hit in the .280s with 70 RBI...Maybe he read too many clippings in the offseason, but he will adapt and 09 I think will be his best season by far....He is a natural leader and the team would be lost without him...
I am excited for next week to start the playoffs...what a year and kudos to Joe..We may not have agreed with many of his decisions, but he did a good job of not panicking....

nsblues ~ great job as usual.

I read this morning, L.A. Times, that Joe is going to start Ozuna in the outfield tonight.......wants to see what he can do. Also, Kent and Furcal want spots on the post-season team. Kent would probably be available to pinch hit. And Furcal, Joe wants to be sure he can handle the assignment.

so the phillies clinched..
are we playing the phillies or the cubbies? the brewers are losing to the cubs right now so if the cubs hang on, the mets and the brewers will be tied going into the last day of season.. should be interesting..

so if the mets and brewers finish in a tie for the wild card, do they play a one game playoff to decide who the winner is? or do they decide by who has the better home record or something like that?

The Cubs beat the Brewers so my daughter will remain home until the Met game is over before we go out tomorrow.
I didn't want her to leave that T.V. set prematurely.
She probably would be a nervous wreck wondering what's happening in the game, weather permitting.
Of course the outcome of the wild card has a lot to do with where the Dodgers are headed.
I surely would like to see my home town Mets win so the Dodgers can have a chance to pay one last visit to good ol' Shea.
Also Torre's coming home for some post season games, is a possibliity.
GO METS!!!!!!!

no trublue, we only play the phillies if the mets are the wildcard winner. because if the brewers win the wildcard, they can't play the cubs first round because they are in the same division, therefore we'd play the cubs and the phillies would play the brewers..
no problem about the lineup!
Report any abuse or spam
yarrum, the phillies are a pretty complete team, and they are playing well. i'd say that both the cubs and the phillies are a tough matchup and at this point i don't care who we play.. we'll just have to take care of business. i do believe we are capable of beating either team..

Sorry, Sara, then Fox Sports was wrong. They were the ones who said we played the Philiies. I'll take your word over theirs any day! lol

joepierre, i don't know about the dodgers going to shea.. a lot would have to happen before that could take place.. including us beating the philles first round and them beating the cubs! :)

it's alright trublue. maybe they said that when they thought that the mets would win the wildcard? i don't know, but i know that the cubs and brewers can't play each other first round, just like the phillies and mets can't play each other.. so we'll just have to keep waiting to find out.. either tomorrow, or even monday!

Sara ~ I just don't think some of these sportscasters are very well informed. As soon as you said two teams wouldn't face off from the same division in the first round, I knew you were right. I should have thought of it myself. I don't reallky care who we play..........because we are going to kick butt!

Looks to me like we're going to Chicago. Odalis Perez is going for the Mets against Florida, while Sabathia will pitch for the Brewers against the Cubs. Zambrano makes for an interesting match-up, but you would not think he will pitch deep into the game. Everything considered, it looks like we're Chicago bound. Of course because I think so, that means we'll wind up in...New York.
