Andre Ethier: Thank you, Dodger Fans

On behalf of Andre and everyone at the Dodger organization, we can’t thank you all enough for trying to get Andre to Phoenix for the All-Star Game next week. It was arguably the biggest push we have ever made, and our All-Star campaigns go back to the days of Cesar Izturis, Russell Martin, Nomar Garciaparra and many more. But what made this one the best is how much you all embraced it.

Andre was downstairs in the clubhouse earlier today and telling people how grateful he was that you all took this to heart. Seeing some of the chatter on this blog, Twitter and Facebook, there were some of you that literally voted thousands of times, which is unfathomable. From the #VoteAndre TweetSuite to the clubouse t-shirts and the various celebs who threw their Twitter endorsements behind him, it was a fun four days. Ideas came from clubhouse attendants, team execs, fans and just about everyone who wanted to see him play in front of his home crowd.

So thank you! And let’s keep pulling for Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw, who will be there to represent your team.

In the meantime, hope many of you are at Andre’s Throwback Bobblehead tonight…should be a crowd over 50,000.

    Andre – We gave it all we had. Even though we failed to get you there, you are an All-Star to us. I was reading an article about you that was written from a writer from the Mets organization, and they did a great job in giving some insight to the things you like. Dodgereric would be thrilled to know that if you weren’t playing baseball, you would want to be a NASCAR driver like Jimmie Johnson or Jeff Gordon. Enchanted and Dodger4life would love to go fishing with you sometime. My hubby and son gave each other high fives when I read you used be a Giants fan when you were younger. It’s okay!! We all eventually see the light on that team – LOL!! (jk). The rest of the stuff I pretty much knew. However, the best thing you said who would you pay money to see play now, and you said your own teammate Matt Kemp. You mentioned in another article you aren’t sure how to assess this season, and you brought light the fact that the individual stuff is good to reflect on after the season, but it’s how the team is playing that is important. What’s great about you, Andre, is you never make excuses, for yourself or the team. And that, and all the other things aforementioned are why you are an All-Star in our hearts. Players like you are what makes this game the best game there is. Keep up the good work, both on and off the field, and you will have many more All-Star games to play in.

    Hey Josh – How does a team that struggles to win 40% of its games have even two All-Stars, let alone three? I’ll tell you how. Ned Colletti tried to fill in all the holes around these young stars (Kershaw, Kemp, and Ethier), and he totally failed. We need a new owner and we need a new GM. When? Yesterday.

      Cheer up, enchanted, at least Carroll continues his abominable, gag hitting with runners in scoring position. What a faux .300 hitter. Did Donnie Baseball really deem him All-Star quality? Ned’ll be lucky to move him at the deadline. On that note, Ned’ll be lucky if anything he does works out.

      the kicker is that the data you are presenting is based on paid attendance (number of tickets sold). Actual attendance, i.e., persons at the game, has dropped off even more dramatically – take it from somebody who’s been at the stadium regularly this season and last.

    He’s been singing this tune for about a year now. Granted, everything he feels is true–the franchise is, indeed, an embarrassment. But don’t leak this s**t to the press. If he doesn’t want to be a Dodger, then adios. I’ve never heard Kemp or Kershaw whine about one thing this awful, forgetful season; Andre had to start griping in Spring Training.

      Still say we could get us a real ML catcher for Dre this offseason. No way you keep Dre over Kemp, and this team won’t pay for both, so better to get something of value.

        Now, you know I will not go for this idea. However, I think that unless we get a new owner, it will probably happen. I don’t think Matt is too crazy about staying with this sinking ship either. I honestly think with an owner who cares abuot baseball and the fans who support the team, we can keep Dre, Matt, Kersh and Billz (provided we get a new pitching coach).

    I was at last night’s game and while it may have been officially a sell-out, there were still plenty of empty seats. There were more people than the other bobblehead nights I attended this season, that is for sure. We did notice something interesting while driving into the stadium: a lot of people leaving on foot with their bobbleheads. The pavillion sections were pretty much filled but I suspect a lot of folks decided to get the doll and skip the game. Too bad, they missed a rare Dodger win. Kershaw was in good form and while it took two relievers to finish the game in the 9th inning, I agree with Donnie’s decision to not let Kersh go out there in the 9th. It was obvious he was tiring a bit and in the 8th inning his pitches were starting to rise.

    Kahil, not sure what to think about Andre. I am not going to get upset at him for the feelings described in the article you mentioned. While everything in that article might be accurate, I don’t like references to unnamed sources. Even so, I can understand a player wondering about his future; I think it happens all the time. Some players handle it better than others. Even Ethierholics probably would not blame Andre if he decided he wanted to be somewhere else because of all the problems surrounding the Dodgers. The fans have been good to him and as long as his play on the field stays at a high level, the fans will support him.

    Well, it can’t be too fun for the players to get court documents for them to read. When that happens, how is that not taking the problems outside the game itself inside the clubhouse. Reading bankruptcy papers over the All-Star break is something I would enjoy reading. As for Andre, more power to him for speaking his mind. Why in the world would any player (that has actual talent) want to play for this team right now. They rest of the team that says it doesn’t bother them is not being honest IMO. If it didn’t bother them the other day, having to read the bankruptcy papers some got yesterday should change their minds.

    Don’t let them try to silence you, Andre. Nobody stays with the same team for their whole career anymore. I’ll enjoy you occasionally wherever you go next; same for Matt, Kersh, and anybody else who’ll reach their peak in another uniform. In fact I’d enjoy hearing from one of our valued players what they plainly think about Frank and Ned. I find myself running out of expletives, so it would be good to hear a fresh approach from the players’ side.

    I find myself following our minor league games more and more, because by the time Frank is forced out of town we’ll be looking for those who’re in the rookie leagues now.

      Messagebear – I will always be a Dodger fan. They are my team, but I also love watching well played baseball, regardless of the team. I find myself liking individual players on all sorts of teams. Even when I was at Target Field, watching Joe Mauer, Jim Thome, Jason Repko, Michael Cuddyer and some of their young players like Danny Valencia and Luke Hughes was so much fun. There are some great young players out there, and it is just fun to watch. I have been paying alot of attention to the Isotopes lately. They have their ups and downs, but otherwise fun to watch.

    Congratulations to Andre and all you Ethierholics. I got in about 300 votes by my estimate. It’s a darn shame that Andrew McCutchen was not on the final 5 vote. He really deserves to be there more than Ethier or Victorino and I would have voted for him if he had been on the ballot. Hope he somehow slips in there.

    In terms of Dre and the linked article it doesn’t seem as if he was talking again. The quotes were from ST. I might be wrong but as I read it I didn’t see anything new other than what an unnamed source stated.

    Everyone knows I love Dre but he is an interesting guy. I don’t know why he seems so guarded now. I met him a few times when he 1st came to the organization and he was really cool. Talkative and engaging. The last few times (Not this season however — the last 2009 & 2010) I’ve run across him he’s not seemed all that happy and talkative. He signed autographs for everybody but wasn’t really chatty.

    I love Dre & hope he stays. I don’t think he keeps saying stuff in the media — I think because he made the Allstar Game and is one of the teams top players and all the drama going on it’s a topic for conversation. Thus the media brings it up.

    I do think that Dre will be gone when he has a chance to leave. I’d be very surprised if he stays. The wild card there is what happens to the ownership situation. I think if it gets settled and someone comes in and can stabilize things I could see him staying.

    • With everything else that’s going on with the Dodgers, McCourt is said to be complaining privately about a couple of the team’s signings (namely Juan Uribe and Ted Lilly). Overall, GM Colletti has done a very good job and is said to have had a solid relationship with McCourt, so it’s very likely McCourt is just blowing off steam at a difficult time. The team has been hampered by a stark reduction in payroll and also has been decimated by injuries to the infield and pitching staff. But McCourt’s behind-the-scenes complaints are par for him. One person who knows him well said, “If they signed 10 All-Stars and one player who didn’t work out, he’d just be upset about that one player.”

    Maybe Frank is now going to try to put the blame on Ned.

    The Dodgers are 2-0 since Jamey Carroll called a players-only meeting before Thursday’s game.

    “It was a good meeting,” said catcher A.J. Ellis, whose single started the game-winning rally. “We were able to communicate with each other, where we’re at and what we’re feeling. We can’t get caught up trying to get 12 wins in one night. We’ll play as hard as we can, and we’ll see where we are in September.”

    They’ve now gone 10 games and 350 plate appearances without a home run. The last one was by Aaron Miles, during the 15-0 win at Minnesota on June 27. The L.A. Dodger record is 13 games without a home run, set from June 15, 1976 to June 27, 1976.

    Billingsley went eight scoreless innings, which means he obviously didn’t allow a home run either. Since the 2010 season, he’s given up 15 homers in 308 innings, 0.44 per nine innings, the best ratio in the majors (minimum 250 innings). It took some nail-biting for Billingsley to get the victory though.

    Javy Guerra made it interesting in the ninth, giving up a double and hitting two batters to load the bases with nobody out. He rallied with two strikeouts, then Matt Kemp caught a sinking liner from Jason Bartlett to preserve the victory. Guerra’s been the Dodgers closer for over a month, but it was his first save chance since June 19.

    One would think that as long as there’s a reasonable chance that she is awarded half ownership of the Dodgers, she would belong somewhere in the bankruptcy court deliberations, especially if she wants the franchise sold.

All the letters reflect the same outrage towards our owner/GM. I guess Frank and Ned don’t read the paper either. They just live in their little bubble of 5 people who keep telling them over and over “You are doing a good job. Just keep fighting! The rest of the millions of people don’t know what they are talking about.”

    OK, just a little fantasy scenario here this morning.
    Garvey fired from the Dodgers organization. Two days later Garvey confronts Frank McCourt and shoots him dead. All of LA celebrates. Garvey hires Jose Baez as his defense attorney. Case has to be dismissed when it comes to trial, but nobody can find 12 people for a jury who’re willing to consider the action anything but commendable public service.

    Hello all…the thread everyone jumped to now has more entries than the most recent blog right here. Anyway, the stadium looked absolutely empty on TV today. Tommy, please get Frank on the phone and reason with this guy. And if he won’t listen, have some of your “friends” make him an offer he can’t refuse.

    Tommy’s Blog was the first MLBlog. I remember when it started, I didn’t know what the heck a “blog” was. Sounded like half a word, and I guess it is.

    One of the best things McCourt has done during his tenure was bringing Tommy back into the fold. It was a shame FOX ran him off after the dirty business that probably started with the Piazza trade. FOX proved tradition didn’t matter as much as giving it to Ted Turner on another front of a massive Multi-Media Battle.

    Remembering “ANYBODY but FOX” back in ’03, we were fooled once. Now hearing the chants of “ANYBODY but McCourt”, will we be fooled again?

    Im so sick of this baseball season, it was ruined by Frank McDickhead! They just keep coming, proud L.A. moments… Steve Garvey fired is the latest.
    I hate you McCourt! Why would you work for such a creep Josh! I hope all the big talents signs elsewhere if McCourt still is owner.
    Frank, Not only did you destroy this franchise you stole from each and every Dodgers fan. You took LA baseball away from us all
