Garret Anderson, Jay Gibbons, Sylvia Fisk and Esther Rosen
In today’s L.A. Times, Bill Plaschke found one of the amazing stories in the building so make sure you check it out. It’s always great to see some of the hard working people here get some recognition and the incredible thing is, there are stories like this behind so many people who work for the Dodgers, yet few ever learn of their tales.
It’s only fitting, since Bill points out that they’ve never met a player in four decades of Sylvia working here, that we put their names in the headline with two players who made news today. The club designated Garret Anderson for assignment to make room for Jay Gibbons, who has been tearing up Triple-A all season long after spending last year retired in Thousand Oaks. Garret has been a class act throughout a difficult year and we wish him well. Hopefully Jay can come up with some big hits for this club in the final seven-plus weeks of the season.
As for Sylvia and Esther, the timing of the story was also ironic because yesterday we had the latest installment of the Starting 9 program. Various stadium workers – from ushers to ticket takers, security to parking attendants and food service workers, etc. are nominated by their colleagues to be their department’s member of the Starting 9. Those nine employees then get to watch batting practice from the field, meet a Dodger player and, here’s the kicker: Meet Vin Scully.
It’s awesome to see the reaction on their faces when they meet the person who ties all Dodger generations together and hopefully Sylvia will be honored in the future if she hasn’t been already.

I thought there were 7 1/2 weeks left in the season, but considering Anderson’s effectiveness, Gibbons not getting hits the first 2 1/2 weeks wouldn’t even be noticeable.

I’m reading Josh’s thread today, nice thread, while listening to Vin. I see it finally happened, Anderson is gone, ahh I was just getting use to him, LOL.
I’m listening to the Dodgers and this a rather nice first inning, I hope they can score a lot of runs because they don’t have many scoring innings, as we all know.
Most every pinch-hit appearance for Anderson, Vinny (bless his heart) would only mention the number of hits that he had (finishing with 12). But every time he was announced, I winced/bitched/moaned. He actually wasn’t horrible, hitting .240 as a PH. Not great, not even good. But not horrible. It was when he STARTED (15 for 98 – .153/.175/.204/.379) that he truly sucked. I echo bpb – good riddance, but the move was much too late ala Sweeney. I wonder who next season’s POS is going to be?

Good afternoon ITD Readers and writers!!!! As far as Garrett Anderson, I wish him well, but like many have said, it might have just been a tad too late to help much. I guess we will have to win and see what happens. The gnats sure aren’t helping themselves right now, but we leave for Philly tomorrow which certainly will not be easy.

By reading those articles (and listening to bear), we definitely have to be on the Greedy Little Wench’s side. If Franky keeps the team long enough to reap the benefits (or borrow more money from their potential) of the impending cable network, we could be stuck with him (and his sons) for a long, long time.
Anderson, might not have helped much, except for at least one game winning hit but he looked like a guy who was very easy to get along with and if he goes anywhere, I wish him luck.
He had a wonderful career but unfortunately that was before he became a Dodger,

As long I’m into acronyms, how about a little NGH? (New Guy History):
On September 30, 2006, the Los Angeles Times reported that former relief pitcher Jason Grimsley, during a June 6, 2006, federal raid, told federal agents investigating steroids in baseball that Gibbons was a user of “anabolic steroids.” The Times reported that Gibbons was one of five names blacked out in an affidavit filed in federal court. However, on October 3, 2006, the Washington Post reported that San Francisco United States attorney Kevin Ryan said that the Los Angeles Times report contained “significant inaccuracies.” Gibbons, along with the other four players named, denounced the story. However, on September 9, 2007, Sports Illustrated reported that a source close to an Orlando-based compound pharmacy alleged that Gibbons had received multiple shipments of performance-enhancing steroids and human growth hormone (HGH) between October 2003 to July 2005. He was suspended for the first 15 games of the 2008 season on December 6, 2007.
On December 13, 2007, he was cited in the Mitchell Report to the Commissioner of Baseball of an Independent Investigation Into the Illegal Use of Steroids and Other Performance Enhancing Substances by Players in Major League Baseball.
He was not suspended by Major League Baseball, but he performed so poorly in 2008 spring training that the Orioles cut him even though he was owed nearly $12 million for the last two years of his contract. The Orioles management claimed that the release was a “baseball decision” unrelated to the steroid allegations.
On June 12, 2008, Gibbons wrote an emotional letter to all 30 MLB clubs, asking to return to baseball, promising to donate his salary to charity. The only team that gave him a chance was the independent Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League, a team unaffiliated with MLB. He played in 27 games for the Ducks, hitting .280 with 5 home runs in 107 at-bats.
On July 22, 2008, Gibbons signed a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers and was assigned to the Double-A Huntsville Stars. Gibbons spent approximately one week at Double-A Huntsville before being promoted to Triple-A Nashville on July 27. He became a free agent after the season.
On January 12, 2009, Gibbons signed a minor league contract with an invite to spring training with the Florida Marlins. He was released by the Marlins on March 13, 2009; the Marlins stated that they did not have room on the roster for him.
On May 11, 2009, Gibbons agreed to play for the Newark Bears of the Atlantic League.
Gibbons batting for the Albuquerque Isotopes, Triple-A affiliates of the Los Angeles Dodgers, in 2010. Gibbons signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers prior to the 2010 season

Why now Joe? As Gurnick also points out, we’ve know since May this guy wasn’t cutting the mustard as a PH, and was even worse in his starts, while Gibbons has been tearing it up all year at AAA (not that I want a juicer on the team, but anything would’ve been better than Anderson.) So Joe wasted well over 100 ABs back when it might’ve made a difference.
The [non] thought processes of this management regime are astounding.
Very intersting, bpb1. I just mentioned the same thing to Cat. Wondering how many more games we would have won without GA batting. And, yes, Joe is a stubborn asss and not right for our team.

I am hoping that Charlie Manuel skips Blanton with the off day this week and sends out Hamels on Thursday, due to his success against you guys. But Charlie doesn’t do that. The Phillies are on quite a run at home, so maybe they can get away with it.
Don’t get too excited phan, our team stinks and will be lucky if they’re even competitive, let alone win a game.
Tru its the fact JoJo/Ned will send a kid down if he doesn’t have immediate success, or they’ll bitch about the young guns not producing (which is fine if they’d also spread that around to the PVLs that aren’t producing) yet they’ll keep someone around like GA even though they know can’t produce anymore. How many times have we seen it with these idiots? Games in the first half of the year count just as much as stretch run games. They preach winning, then keep guys around out of sentimentality that only drag the team down? That’s total bull****.

It’s rather ironic to me, that the dodgers organization praises its employees like this, yet allows criticism from management openly, I am speaking specifically of Ned’s comments in early May of Matt kemp, I reflect on that, and wonder if that wasn’t the start of the Dodgers downward spiral this season. What really scares me, is that if this team remains owned by McCourt, it will be a legacy left to his sons for generations to come. Sure the Omalley’s had their problems, but I see nothing good coming if the Dodgers remain in McCourt control.
Yea and to those that say Kemp needs to pointed out, perhaps, but that should be in the clubhouse. Perhaps many of the dodgers are showing their ‘disappointment” with management by their lack luster playing. If Kemp is traded, the dodgers will be burned.

Feeling better by now? Hope so.
The article in Sunday’s L.A. Times about the pending divorce indicated the two sides have at least discussed some sort of settlement but since they are so far apart on a number, an agreement is unlikely, at least at this time. But no matter what is decided by the parties and/or by the courts, any outcome where a McCourt retains control of the Dodgers is a bad outcome for Dodger fans. Even if somewhere down the road it is decided to put the team up for sale, management will be limited in what moves it is willing or able to make as we saw during the transition from O’Malley to Fox. Not sure why MLB allows these situations to fester like this but obviously the other owners don’t care. No one ever said professional team owners in any of the leagues are the brightest of the bunch.
Lbirken, we have the dimmest bulb amongst owners for a Commissioner, so that could be part of the problem.

I went to the doctor and he gave me IV fluids. They always have a hard time finding me veins. I also got a shot and something nasty to drink. Just wish my sore muscle pains will go away but the doctor said is normal cause I used them so much during my thorowing up which went on from 3 am to 10 am Friday. You would think I’d be better by now. I’ve been eating light soup, crackers and fluids. I should be back to work tomorrow.

Matt Kemp is sitting tonight why? Because he is 1 for his last 20? But before this mini-slump he went 5-5 with a double and a HR. Let the guy play. But Ned needs to surround him with other guys that can hit, not Pathednik and Theriot.
Quiet around here today for a gameday. I am happy for Repko. Gardenhire may be a bit premature in his excitement as a lot of players start off well and then tail off as pitchers make the adjustments and the hitter does not. I think his overall assessment of Repko is accurate and sometimes things just don’t work out for a player in one organization but do in another. Repko had the misfortune of being a bit injury prone while wearing Dodger blue but no one could deny his effort. Similar situation to Werth. Can’t keep them all. There are a number of former Dodgers holding there own on other teams such as Cody Ross, Dionar Navarro and even David Ross. More power to them.
I agree that the Troncoso call up only to be sent down for Bellisario is a bit strange. My guess is the Dodgers do these things because they can. As for Bellisario, he certainly was a big factor last season and one can only wonder how things might have been had he been available all season. I do find it odd that no one can or will say anything about why Bellisario has been on the restricted list. I do respect his privacy and I suppose we really do not have to know the reason but the questions will continue until we know for sure.

I’m glad we hit the ball well tonight and scored lots of runs but……bullpen MUST stop giving up so many runs.
Good win Dodgers! I don’t care about all the extra runs the bullpen gave up. The important thing is we won the first game of a big road trip and even more important, our offense finally woke up. That’s 23 runs in two games. Wow, it seems like it’s taken us two weeks to score that many runs.

Great game tonight, glad to see us put up double-digits! I heard Steve Lyons talking the other day about how we don’t have to catch San Diego right now, with three teams ahead of us. Well, after today, we have passed the Rockies by a half game. Now we need to keep them in the rearview and work on passing the Gnats. Let’s do this Dodgers!
