Garret Anderson, Jay Gibbons, Sylvia Fisk and Esther Rosen

In today’s L.A. Times, Bill Plaschke found one of the amazing stories in the building so make sure you check it out. It’s always great to see some of the hard working people here get some recognition and the incredible thing is, there are stories like this behind so many people who work for the Dodgers, yet few ever learn of their tales.

It’s only fitting, since Bill points out that they’ve never met a player in four decades of Sylvia working here, that we put their names in the headline with two players who made news today. The club designated Garret Anderson for assignment to make room for Jay Gibbons, who has been tearing up Triple-A all season long after spending last year retired in Thousand Oaks. Garret has been a class act throughout a difficult year and we wish him well. Hopefully Jay can come up with some big hits for this club in the final seven-plus weeks of the season.

As for Sylvia and Esther, the timing of the story was also ironic because yesterday we had the latest installment of the Starting 9 program. Various stadium workers – from ushers to ticket takers, security to parking attendants and food service workers, etc. are nominated by their colleagues to be their department’s member of the Starting 9. Those nine employees then get to watch batting practice from the field, meet a Dodger player and, here’s the kicker: Meet Vin Scully.

It’s awesome to see the reaction on their faces when they meet the person who ties all Dodger generations together and hopefully Sylvia will be honored in the future if she hasn’t been already.

I thought there were 7 1/2 weeks left in the season, but considering Anderson’s effectiveness, Gibbons not getting hits the first 2 1/2 weeks wouldn’t even be noticeable.

Of course, it was nice to read that Jay was linked to the Mitchell Report.

    Hi Folks
I just got by the Computer just before the game began, looked like Loney and Theriot just trying too hard in the top of the first. But it’s good nothin happened.

  3. oldbrooklynfan

I’m reading Josh’s thread today, nice thread, while listening to Vin. I see it finally happened, Anderson is gone, ahh I was just getting use to him, LOL.
I’m listening to the Dodgers and this a rather nice first inning, I hope they can score a lot of runs because they don’t have many scoring innings, as we all know.

  4. dodgereric

Most every pinch-hit appearance for Anderson, Vinny (bless his heart) would only mention the number of hits that he had (finishing with 12). But every time he was announced, I winced/bitched/moaned. He actually wasn’t horrible, hitting .240 as a PH. Not great, not even good. But not horrible. It was when he STARTED (15 for 98 – .153/.175/.204/.379) that he truly sucked. I echo bpb – good riddance, but the move was much too late ala Sweeney. I wonder who next season’s POS is going to be?

Much more pertainant to the Dodgers’ future than today’s game are these two articles:

(I posted this one late last night on the last thread)

Good to see the Dodgers use their speed to get those 4 runs. They are finally trying to make things happen on offense.

  6. enchantedbeaver

Eric – don’t know how in this economy and with this administration you could possibly project what future earnings will be. Greedy little wench isn’t she? I could live the rest of my life on a month or two of her pre-settlement alimony.

  7. oldbrooklynfan

I guess Lilly will bear down now with a smaller lead.
I’ve been kept up to date on Jay Gibbons from the guys on TBLA and lets hope he can keep it up in majors.

  8. nellyjune

Good afternoon ITD Readers and writers!!!! As far as Garrett Anderson, I wish him well, but like many have said, it might have just been a tad too late to help much. I guess we will have to win and see what happens. The gnats sure aren’t helping themselves right now, but we leave for Philly tomorrow which certainly will not be easy.

Dodgereric – great statistical work last night, and congrats on getting your painting done. Also, not a good day for our drivers 😦

Submission Error Hell (We gotta start calling it SEH for short)

By reading those articles (and listening to bear), we definitely have to be on the Greedy Little Wench’s side. If Franky keeps the team long enough to reap the benefits (or borrow more money from their potential) of the impending cable network, we could be stuck with him (and his sons) for a long, long time.

  10. oldbrooklynfan

Anderson, might not have helped much, except for at least one game winning hit but he looked like a guy who was very easy to get along with and if he goes anywhere, I wish him luck.
He had a wonderful career but unfortunately that was before he became a Dodger,

  11. trublu4ever

Dodgereric ~ I wish they were forced to sell….then we wouldn’t have to deal with either of them.

  12. dodgereric

obf, I agree. I wish him well too and also wish he hadn’t tarnished his career by hanging on here. For that, he can thank the incredibly stubborn Torre.

tru, if the GLW wins, they’ll both be gone.

  13. knouffbrock@frontiernet.net

What’s this? A series win? 8 runs? And a game closer to the giants? Will wonders never cease?

Seriously, though, something to build on, instead of all that crappy news.

    GLW = Greedy Little Wench

As long I’m into acronyms, how about a little NGH? (New Guy History):

On September 30, 2006, the Los Angeles Times reported that former relief pitcher Jason Grimsley, during a June 6, 2006, federal raid, told federal agents investigating steroids in baseball that Gibbons was a user of “anabolic steroids.” The Times reported that Gibbons was one of five names blacked out in an affidavit filed in federal court. However, on October 3, 2006, the Washington Post reported that San Francisco United States attorney Kevin Ryan said that the Los Angeles Times report contained “significant inaccuracies.” Gibbons, along with the other four players named, denounced the story. However, on September 9, 2007, Sports Illustrated reported that a source close to an Orlando-based compound pharmacy alleged that Gibbons had received multiple shipments of performance-enhancing steroids and human growth hormone (HGH) between October 2003 to July 2005. He was suspended for the first 15 games of the 2008 season on December 6, 2007.

On December 13, 2007, he was cited in the Mitchell Report to the Commissioner of Baseball of an Independent Investigation Into the Illegal Use of Steroids and Other Performance Enhancing Substances by Players in Major League Baseball.

He was not suspended by Major League Baseball, but he performed so poorly in 2008 spring training that the Orioles cut him even though he was owed nearly $12 million for the last two years of his contract. The Orioles management claimed that the release was a “baseball decision” unrelated to the steroid allegations.

On June 12, 2008, Gibbons wrote an emotional letter to all 30 MLB clubs, asking to return to baseball, promising to donate his salary to charity. The only team that gave him a chance was the independent Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League, a team unaffiliated with MLB. He played in 27 games for the Ducks, hitting .280 with 5 home runs in 107 at-bats.

On July 22, 2008, Gibbons signed a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers and was assigned to the Double-A Huntsville Stars. Gibbons spent approximately one week at Double-A Huntsville before being promoted to Triple-A Nashville on July 27. He became a free agent after the season.

On January 12, 2009, Gibbons signed a minor league contract with an invite to spring training with the Florida Marlins. He was released by the Marlins on March 13, 2009; the Marlins stated that they did not have room on the roster for him.

On May 11, 2009, Gibbons agreed to play for the Newark Bears of the Atlantic League.

I’d like to see some long balls from Gibbons.

I’d like to see any balls from Frank.

  16. nedajerk

I’m not shock I think I said Marquis was due a bad game consider this was his 1st started since the 1st month of the season.

  17. nedajerk

Giving up a homerun to a hitter that was batting under .200 and not really a homerun threat is totally unacceptable.

  18. nedajerk

Brandon Morrow holy crap 17 k’s and was one out away from the 3rd no hitters that the Rays had against them.

  19. nedajerk

Official scorer Dave Perkins, a retired Toronto Star writer working just his third game, wasted no time in making the call. ?I won?t lose any sleep over it. That?s a base hit all the way,? Perkins said.

  20. enchantedbeaver

If this doesn’t profoundly state that (A) Joe’s an idiot and (B) He’s has been and always will be the wrong manager for this club, according to Steve Gurnick, here’s what he said about GA:
    .
“The name [Gibbons] was mentioned a number of times, and I just basically kept putting it off, putting it off,” Torre said.
    .
“I’ve been resistant for awhile to making a change. We just felt it was time to try something else.”

Why now Joe? As Gurnick also points out, we’ve know since May this guy wasn’t cutting the mustard as a PH, and was even worse in his starts, while Gibbons has been tearing it up all year at AAA (not that I want a juicer on the team, but anything would’ve been better than Anderson.) So Joe wasted well over 100 ABs back when it might’ve made a difference.

The [non] thought processes of this management regime are astounding.

  21. trublu4ever

Very intersting, bpb1. I just mentioned the same thing to Cat. Wondering how many more games we would have won without GA batting. And, yes, Joe is a stubborn asss and not right for our team.

  22. phan52

    Welcome to Philly this week!
Looks like we’ll be facing your three best (Padilla, Kershaw, Billingsley), while you’ll get Kendrick, Oswalt and Blanton. I am hoping that Charlie Manuel skips Blanton with the off day this week and sends out Hamels on Thursday, due to his success against you guys. But Charlie doesn’t do that. The Phillies are on quite a run at home, so maybe they can get away with it.

  23. enchantedbeaver

Don’t get too excited phan, our team stinks and will be lucky if they’re even competitive, let alone win a game.

  24. enchantedbeaver

Tru its the fact JoJo/Ned will send a kid down if he doesn’t have immediate success, or they’ll bitch about the young guns not producing (which is fine if they’d also spread that around to the PVLs that aren’t producing) yet they’ll keep someone around like GA even though they know can’t produce anymore. How many times have we seen it with these idiots? Games in the first half of the year count just as much as stretch run games. They preach winning, then keep guys around out of sentimentality that only drag the team down? That’s total bull****.

  25. crzblue2

    phan52,
You are in for a treat to see the soap bubble from Padilla. I hope noone hits it.
Three threads since I went down on the DL. Catching up here. I came down with food poisoning Friday morning and my right side of my stomach still hurts when I move. thought I was getting better but this morning it was worst. Heading to the doctor.

It’s rather ironic to me, that the dodgers organization praises its employees like this, yet allows criticism from management openly, I am speaking specifically of Ned’s comments in early May of Matt kemp, I reflect on that, and wonder if that wasn’t the start of the Dodgers downward spiral this season. What really scares me, is that if this team remains owned by McCourt, it will be a legacy left to his sons for generations to come. Sure the Omalley’s had their problems, but I see nothing good coming if the Dodgers remain in McCourt control.
Yea and to those that say Kemp needs to pointed out, perhaps, but that should be in the clubhouse. Perhaps many of the dodgers are showing their ‘disappointment” with management by their lack luster playing. If Kemp is traded, the dodgers will be burned.

  27. lbirken@aol.com

The article in Sunday’s L.A. Times about the pending divorce indicated the two sides have at least discussed some sort of settlement but since they are so far apart on a number, an agreement is unlikely, at least at this time. But no matter what is decided by the parties and/or by the courts, any outcome where a McCourt retains control of the Dodgers is a bad outcome for Dodger fans. Even if somewhere down the road it is decided to put the team up for sale, management will be limited in what moves it is willing or able to make as we saw during the transition from O’Malley to Fox. Not sure why MLB allows these situations to fester like this but obviously the other owners don’t care. No one ever said professional team owners in any of the leagues are the brightest of the bunch.

  28. northstateblues

Lbirken, we have the dimmest bulb amongst owners for a Commissioner, so that could be part of the problem.

  29. crzblue2

    Knouff,
I went to the doctor and he gave me IV fluids. They always have a hard time finding me veins. I also got a shot and something nasty to drink. Just wish my sore muscle pains will go away but the doctor said is normal cause I used them so much during my thorowing up which went on from 3 am to 10 am Friday. You would think I’d be better by now. I’ve been eating light soup, crackers and fluids. I should be back to work tomorrow.
    .
Did you see that pics in my blog where Joe Torre gave the Koufax baseball? I know this took a loooong time but it finally happened.

lny4loney – I still have your James Loney Song (along with others ITDers have written back in the day) on my Dodger wall in my classroom.

    Emma – get well soon!!!!!

  31. nellyjune

Kahli – for what it is worth, I am glad Repko found a team that could use him.

According to the homepage, the Dodgers optioned Troncoso. Belisaro on his way back soon I would guess.

  32. kpookiemon

Not to beat a dead horse, and I know it’s water far under the bridge, but with GA bidding us a fond farewell, too bad this organization had no room for this former 1st-round, home-grown Dodger:

“Twins manager Ron Gardenhire now understands why the Minnesota organization rated Jason Repko so highly.

“Repko, whom the Twins signed to a Minor League deal in April after the Dodgers released the 29-year-old outfielder, has batted .319 with nine runs scored, three home runs and six RBIs in 16 games since his June 25 callup from Triple-A Rochester.

“Our people really liked him,” Gardenhire said. “Our scouts did a really good job about watching this guy, and when he became available, we got him. I think it’s kind of a see-for-yourself type of thing when you bring in a player and don’t know anything about him.

“He was in another league, so we didn’t get to see him play. Now that we’ve gotten him out there and into some ballgames, he’s handled himself very well. It’s really exciting.”

“Repko’s offensive ability and defensive versatility particularly excite Gardenhire.

“He’s got a short, compact swing and can turn on the ball a little bit,” Gardenhire said. “I don’t think home runs are his forte, but he can hit them every once in a while. He’s proven that he can put it in the seats, so good for him. He can spell any of the outfielders and feel really comfortable doing it. When you put him out there, he gives you a lift.”

And for the record, I’ll take Gardenhire’s analysis over Ned’s and Joe’s.

  33. dodgereric

Since it’s been, oh, 10 minutes since Dodger management made a stupid move, let’s review just a tiny bit:

August 7th, “Ramon Troncoso Says He’s Back”
“He was much better,” Torre said after Troncoso gave up no runs and two hits while striking out two batters in 1 2/3 innings Friday night against the Washington Nationals. “I thought the ball came out of his hand [well] and was pretty consistent.”
    http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-0808-new-dodgers-fyi-20100808,0,3105428.story

August 9th, “Ned Colletti Says, No, You’re Not. We’re Getting Belisario Back And We’d Rather Keep That POS Sherrill Than You”

OK, that’s not a real headline. But it’s the real story:
    http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-dodgers-belisario-20100810,0,5132547.story

    Unbelievable.

    Fire Joe
Fire the guy who hired Joe

    Hey all,

Been a while since I’ve been on here, but my blood has been boiling right along with you. Since it’s been a while, I figure I’d mark my return with (an attempt at) a song.

Neddy (Sung to The Temptations ?My Girl?)

    I’ve got Neddy,
    On a crappy day.
    When it?s trading time,
    I’ve got my boy Neddy.

    Well, I guess you’ll say
Who can make me feel crappy?
    Neddy. (Neddy, Neddy)
    Talkin’ ’bout Neddy. (Neddy)

    I’ve got so much money
    My name is Frankie.
I’ve got a divorce goin on
It?ll be the end of me.

    Well, I guess you’ll say
Who can make me feel crappy?
    Neddy. (Neddy, Neddy)
    Talkin’ ’bout Neddy. (Neddy)

    Ooooh, Hoooo.

    Ned, Ned, Ned.
    Ned, Ned, Ned.

    Ned don’t need no money,
    To dumpster dive.
Frank got all the riches, baby,
    Make his wallet thrive.

    Well, I guess you’ll say
Who can make me feel crappy?
    Neddy. (Neddy, Neddy)
    Talkin’ ’bout Neddy. (Neddy)

    Talkin’ bout Neddy.
I’ve got Neddy on a crappy day
    With Neddy.
I?ve even got my boy Frankie, with Neddy?

  37. trublu4ever

    Fantastic song, Peerumike!
    .
I see Matt is out of lineup tonight….Gibbons taking his place in CF. Hmmm.

  38. selltheteam

Matt Kemp is sitting tonight why? Because he is 1 for his last 20? But before this mini-slump he went 5-5 with a double and a HR. Let the guy play. But Ned needs to surround him with other guys that can hit, not Pathednik and Theriot.

  39. lbirken@aol.com

Quiet around here today for a gameday. I am happy for Repko. Gardenhire may be a bit premature in his excitement as a lot of players start off well and then tail off as pitchers make the adjustments and the hitter does not. I think his overall assessment of Repko is accurate and sometimes things just don’t work out for a player in one organization but do in another. Repko had the misfortune of being a bit injury prone while wearing Dodger blue but no one could deny his effort. Similar situation to Werth. Can’t keep them all. There are a number of former Dodgers holding there own on other teams such as Cody Ross, Dionar Navarro and even David Ross. More power to them.

I agree that the Troncoso call up only to be sent down for Bellisario is a bit strange. My guess is the Dodgers do these things because they can. As for Bellisario, he certainly was a big factor last season and one can only wonder how things might have been had he been available all season. I do find it odd that no one can or will say anything about why Bellisario has been on the restricted list. I do respect his privacy and I suppose we really do not have to know the reason but the questions will continue until we know for sure.

  40. oldbrooklynfan

    Hi Everybody
Well here they are in Philadelphia, the home of the NL Champs.
It doesn’t seem possible to pull off a win, but they do it, time and again. They just have to play the game as usual and hope for the best.
    GO DODGERS!!!!

  41. selltheteam

Padilla just keeps getting better and better… here are his monthly stats this year for ERA/WHIP/BAA:
    .
    April 6.65/1.43/.284
    June 3.26/0.88/.197
    July 1.42/0.85/.174
    August 0.00/0.44/.071

  42. nellyjune

I sat down just in time to see Andre’s RBI single. That was a good play by Theriot.

    Great song Perumike!!!!

  43. nedajerk

Apparently you haven’t been watchign the last 3 games when we scored 17 runs and no Kemp need to be bench and he’s in a huge slump and if you take out the 5/5 the 1/20 would be worst.

  44. trublu4ever

Shad ~ I watch every game and I know Matt is slumping but, if he doesn’t play, how does he come out of it?

  45. nedajerk

Maybe Kemp would get hot like he did the last time when he was bench for 3 games. Kemp only have 8 hits in 40 AB’s and are we really bench about him getting a day off. Another rbi by Ethier.

  46. selltheteam

Shad – She is a he, and you’re right, I was not thinking about the series against the Nats, but our general offensive woes since the All-Star break.

  47. nedajerk

Sorry about that I was hoping people weren’t still complainting about Kemp getting a routine day off after the 0/4 with 4 k’s and you know it could easy been Anderson in LF. Gibbon should’ve been on our team all season long and we have to suffer with Anderson. Don’t get me wrong I like Anderson but he should’ve been gone in June.

  48. selltheteam

Shad – Yeah, I think we need Ned and Joe to tell us why it took so long to replace Anderson with Gibbons.

  49. selltheteam

His April was bad because of a nerve problem in his arm. If he can continue at his current effectiveness, well, we’ll see.

  50. nedajerk

I think Blake need a day off to. I wouldn’t mind seeing Belliard get a couple of starts. I miss the last year Belliard. Thanks for the gift.

  51. nedajerk

I really want that sac fly by Gibbons but I guess we can’t be greedy and need to save some of those runs for tomorrow.

  52. crzblue2

    Wow! Gibbons! esta en fuego!
Did not go to work today, I was still in pain but I was able to work from home. I got both computers going, work and home. I was about to sneeze and just had to hold it cause my right side still hurts but I think is better.
    .

I am listening to Pepe Uniguez and he said that Alex Cora told him a long time ago that if he was a manager, he would recruit Ausmus as a coach.
    .
    Save some runs boys!

  53. truebluewill

SAY HEY! WHAT DO YOU SAY JAY! That’s the boost that we need! It’s going to be tough to keep Gibbons out of the lineup.

  54. truebluewill

It’s a good thing we’re not saving any runs for tomorrow, we need all we can get tonight. Keep em coming boys!

  55. truebluewill

This will be a test for Sherrill. He needs to get the Phillies out here without scoring. You don’t want it any closer than 6 for the ninth.

  56. nellyjune

They never make it easy do they?

Way to go Andre! He was named player of the game from the Phillies announcers. Gibbons, James and Casey deserve some love too 🙂

  57. trublu4ever

I’m glad we hit the ball well tonight and scored lots of runs but……bullpen MUST stop giving up so many runs.

  58. truebluewill

Good win Dodgers! I don’t care about all the extra runs the bullpen gave up. The important thing is we won the first game of a big road trip and even more important, our offense finally woke up. That’s 23 runs in two games. Wow, it seems like it’s taken us two weeks to score that many runs.

  59. perumike

Great game tonight, glad to see us put up double-digits! I heard Steve Lyons talking the other day about how we don’t have to catch San Diego right now, with three teams ahead of us. Well, after today, we have passed the Rockies by a half game. Now we need to keep them in the rearview and work on passing the Gnats. Let’s do this Dodgers! Well I have doubts, I also have hope that we can do it.
