Today, the two winners of the ThinkCure auction who had the winning bids to go “Inside the Dodgers” will be here to spend the day following around yours truly to see what it’s like to work for the team. It’s always a fun day for me, as it’s a reminder of how fortunate we are to do what we do for a living.
Meanwhile, if you are interested in the Inside the Dodgers tour, it’s set for Sept. 4 at 12:00 p.m. and as we mentioned last month, it’ll be a special group rate of $10 per person or $5 for kids. You can also tickets for that night (you can pretty much get them wherever you’d like to sit…we aren’t requiring anyone to purchase in the same section).

Josh, I wish I could get away and attend. I would certainly like to meet you and Thank You personally for this blog and all you do. I know it can be difficult at times. You are much appreciated. Our qualms are with the ownership and management, upper and on the field (or lack thereof)!!!! Don’t take it personally!!! You’re doing an exemplary job!!!!
I would like to think UCLA will make a move this season. We will see if the Bruins have the talent to do so. Any you are right about sitting through a doubleheader or games that drag. When the Dodgers first came to L.A. the games started at 8:00. Can’t imagine starting a game at that time now although it happens quite a bit for eastern teams when the games are on national TV. I am amazed at those Red Sox or Yankee fans still hanging around at midnight their time for a routine 9 inning game.
Just an aside, but, do you think A-Fraud will break the all time home run record of 755!!! Yes, you read it right, in my book, Aaron still holds the record. Barroid is a farce!!! I personally don’t think he can do it without the juice. Same way Barroid did it.

Lots of great posts on the previous thread. I have become a baseball fan as well, and know a little something about every team through all the work I have done trying to implement into a geography unit. So, if the Dodgers were to not make it to the post season, I have other teams I would like to see there.

Ken Levine congratulated A-Roid on his 348th home run. I thought that about said it perfectly. It amazes me how his whole ordeal just got swept under the rug, unlike Manny. The east/west coast bias in full affect it seems.
Baseball would and will be better when A-Fraud/Roid, Barroid, and Clemens, et al, are just relegated to obscurity and forgotten by baseball. They do not deserve the Hall of Fame!!!!
Hell, Pete Rose is not in the Hall of Fame because of what he did out of the lines. These guys cheated between the lines!! It’s a no brainer.
If you put Barroid/Pumpkin Head or A-Fraud into the Hall of Fame because you think they were great players and made their claims before or after the steroids, then, it is total hypocrisy to keep Rose out. Make it an even playing field. Rose deserves to be in based on what he did as a player. If we are considering their total body of work, none gets in. If you want to divide it up into sections, OK, but do it across the board!!!!!
Sorry for the tirade about steroids gang. I just think our current team situation has been effected by it. (Read Manny, Martin, Furcal, etc..)
Rose gets my vote. Of course, I don’t have one but if I did, he would get it. But I do think the media covered the story of A-Rod hitting his 600th home run because it felt it had to while most baseball fans cared little about it. Even some of the media grew weary of talking about it. It is just another home run and perhaps a personal milestone for him but of little significance to the game. Now if he lasts long enough to challenge for the home run title, clearly there will be a lot of interest and not all of it positive. I think we just have to look at the steroid era as another chapter in the history of the game and move on to whatever happens next.
Well, anyway, it will be decided in the court of public opinion!!! We need to find our offense and get a win to keep our bleak hopes alive!!!!

Obviously the last part is a joke (and mentions Colletti’s attention to posture), but part of me feels it’s only two more years before Ned signs all the guys we traded away in ’04.
I’m just going to take the rest of this season like I did the entire 90’s decade: Going down with the ship, holding out an inkling of irrational hope until the day they’re mathematically eliminated, then turn to the “how can we best ruin our rivals’ chances?” train of thought.
That’s how I spent the 90’s through 2004, and it’s how Giants fans have spent over half a century.
I have a fleeting memory of the Dodgers winning the World Championship when I was seven, and that makes my baseball experience more fulfilling than any California-born Giants fan. Really, that’s eating soup with a fork, though.

Kinda figures tonight. No sooner do I hang a new moniker on a guy when he goes off and contributes to a win. Anyway, it was about time that Pathednik did something good.
Yes, I am very happy to see him hitting the ball again, and it was also good to see James come through in the clutch tonight, seeing how he had at least three chances against the Padres the other day.
I used to go to doubleheaders whenever I could, shad. MLB used to schedule them all the time as they made financial sense then. If you were averaging 10,000 a game and could draw 30,000 for a double header, you can see why. When I read Ty Cobb’s autobiography, he mentioned playing doubleheaders 3 days in a row. Of course, it doesn’t make financial sense to do it anymore.
Anyway, for several years the Dodgers used to schedule a doubleheader just for old time’s sake. I made a habit of going to them whenever I could. I never had a problem with seeing 2 games. I loved it. But, as lny4loney said, they’d be 8 hours long now instead of 5-6.
It would be great to see a double header in this day and age at the mlb level. It’s too bad those days are gone, with the exception of make up games.
I decided to see if I could back up Cobb’s claim. Unfortunately, baseball-reference only has game logs starting in 1920, and Cobb started playing in 1905.
But in 1922, his Tigers played:
7/3 – a doubleheader in Chicago against the White Sox (game 1 went 14 innings)
7/4 – a doubleheader in Detroit against the Indians
7/5 – a single game in Detroit against the Indians (11 innings)
7/6 – no game
7/7 – a doubleheader in Washington
7/8 – another doubleheader in Washington
So there is 9 games in 6 days in 3 cities. No airplanes for travel. No air conditioning.
Oh by the way, Cobb went 23 for 42 in those 9 games (548/.578/.738/1.316).
Can you imagine the pitching staffs today trying to do a schedule like that? One of the first things Steve and Eric (Lyon and Collins that is) said after tonight’s game was Brox and Kuo were unavailable for tomorrow afternoon’s game.

They played 3 DHs in 3 days in Chicago in Sept ’24, took a day to travel to Cleveland and play another DH the next day.
There are many other times when they played DHs in back-to-back days, 3DHs in 4 days, 5 DHs in 7 days, etc. Almost all of these were in the latter half of the season, so I’m sure they were making up rainouts, but when you look at what they had to do, it’s amazing.

Looks like my guess was right. Tiger pitchers and their opposite numbers threw 9 complete games in the 6-day stretch compared to the 7 CGs thrown by the ’08-’10 Dodgers thus far.
Marquis, set to make $7.5 million in 2011 — the final season of a two-year deal — is 5-2 with a 2.35 ERA in 11 career starts against Los Angeles. The most recent was a 5-3 loss with Colorado on Oct. 4 at Dodger Stadium.
That defeat ended his five-game win streak over the Dodgers. Marquis is 4-1 with a 1.94 ERA in his last six starts against them.
Loney is 7 for 12 against Marquis with three doubles and a home run, but Andre Ethier is 1 for 17 and Matt Kemp 0 for 12.
Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, batting .387 with five homers and 10 RBIs in his last eight games, is 2 for 9 with no home runs and six strikeouts against Lilly. Adam Dunn, who has seven homers and 14 RBIs over his last 10 contests, is also 2 for 9 versus the left-hander.
Just in – according to Yahoo, Garret Anderson has been DFA’ed! Oh happy day!
