14 years in waiting…

Ted Lilly obviously has a big assignment his first night out and I’m looking forward to seeing him in Dodger blue…I remember following him in our minor leagues when I first started out in the front office and he was at San Bernardino (and he pitched a no-hitter back in 1997). As he told the media the other day in San Fran, he always dreamed about pitching for Los Angeles and it’s taken him 14 years, but he finally has that chance.

There’s not a whole lot more that can be said here…we’ve got three games left against the Padres this week and we need to start winning to put ourselves in a position to make a move over the next two months.

JOSH thanks for the updates….I am looking forward to see Lilly pitch and hopefully he is our boost that we need, the Manny of 2008 boost.

I was in Saturdays game up in San Francisco. Sad that we lost. But the stadium is beautiful. Love it! And fans were great (most of them). Did see some people arguing. The funny part was that they were ladies, actual ladies! And they weren’t young. The atmosphere and weather was great. I don’t know about the whole fist pumping thing they do there, but whatever rocks the San Francisquiens…Giants.

This song is for Josh (in jest), for his is a job that with this [mis]management can?t be easy. From Bye Bye Birdie:

    PUT ON A HAPPY FACE
    .
    Ned gets us total zeros
    Put on a happy face
    Frank fiddles like old Nero
    Put on a happy face
    .
We?ve lost five or six in a row again
    And play like bile
Crowd?s stay away in droves but then,
    We don?t count turnstiles
    .
    Manny?s away on DL
Stick to your script and grin
    Bench full of worthless VLs
    Slip on a happy grin
    And blow some smoky sanctimonity
And put on a happy face!
    .
    Put on a happy face
    Put on a happy face
    .
Just make up some bullshitt and gibberish
    And don?t opine
Got us Pods, ?Lil, Dotel and Theriot
    Now we?re just fine
    .
    ITDs sad and dreary
    Won?t ever get a ring
Guess they can see right through me
    But they?re all just ding-a-lings
I?ll spread my sunshine all over the place
Just put on a happy face!
So put on a happy face!!

Hello ITD! I also have hope, but we need to start making that hope a reality, stating tonight. I was glad to see us put up five runs last night, and hopefully we can put up that many or more, and hold the Padres to less. Let’s do this!!!

  4. thinkingblue

Also it was my first time experiencing a Dodger game from a visitors perspective. The whole “BEAT L.A.” chant really gave me the chills. But for me it just meant that we are the threat to them all. I just wish we had won that game.

  5. crzblue2

    Hello ITD!
I still have hope too. If you were able to hear Vin Scully he said no lead is safe in August. He sited a few inlcuded the infamous one in 1951.
    .
    Rose,
I forgot that you were going to be there. We could not go so it was just as well. Is funny that the Padres and the Giant choose to emphasize LA instead of their own team. THat towel in SF looked like the same giveaway at San Diego last year.

hope returns with a healthy Manny. I hope it’s not to late and hate the fact I even have to type that but feel it’s true. As a bonus then maybe Belliard with his buddy Manny can hit like he did last two months when he replaced the O-dog and then can replace Theorit.

  7. jason.ungar@yahoo.com

And what fires me up is there has not been one quote by Manny that I have read anyway saying to the effect, it’s killing me that I can’t be out there right now to help the guys I love so much. It’s sad. What would Kobe Bryant be doing? All of LA would feel his anguish if he was loosing out on a chance two threepeat. Which is why sports is not just about talent, but desire. Like it or not Kobe Bryant basically rode Manny out of town, but his name was Shaq. Dominant when he wanted to be, but getting older and slower with more and more injuries….

  8. trublu4ever

Jason ~ how do you think Manny is going to feel when he goes out the left field and his Mannywood sign is gone? I’d feel like they’ve already disowned me!

  9. lbirken@aol.com

Jason, I don’t think Manny gives a crap about much of anything right now. As you said, we have not heard a word from him all season. He shut out the media since the PED thing. I don’t doubt he is injured and I don’t doubt he would rather be contributing than sitting on the bench. The fact is, his charm is gone along with his ability. If anyone is a poster child for what happens when the juice is turned off it is Manny. He was great when he got here and it was fun while it lasted. I am not sure how his presence in the lineup now would make much of a difference since he does not seem to be the power threat he once was (which kind of makes him like anyone else in the lineup). In fact, I would think fans should be quite concerned if in fact Ethier, Kemp and company still need someone like Manny to make them better hitters at this point in their careers.

  10. jason.ungar@yahoo.com

    No Mannywood sign..lol

    lbirken@aol.com

I agree with you in general. But honestly he was OPS’ing .925 and getting on base 4 out of 10 at bats. I imagine his slug, obp and ops leads all dodgers. and That alone is solid by anyone. Add his past reputation to situational baseball and you can see why he is missed.

plus with RISP (same basically as with runners on)
    .352/.457/.519/.976

So it means something to the other hitters in the lineup for sure and that’s not taking anything away from those hitters. I imagine with Andre it’s the hand and with Kemp it’s the head. Not trying to defend Manny and agree with you also that he would rather be out there and is really hurt. I don’t mean to question that at all. He wants his numbers I am sure as well as baseball is fun!!

  11. lbirken@aol.com

Jason, I am reacting to Manny more emotionally, which for me is unusual. Of course we can’t know what his presence in the lineup would have meant to the team this season. It just seemed to me he got his hits and walks at the wrong time. I just do not expect him to be much of a factor when and if he does come back but if he can help, then I will pull for him just as I pull for every player wearing a Dodger uniform.

  12. trublu4ever

Furcal out of lineup tonight….back pain. Just what we need right now. Also, Troncoso recallled and Weaver on DL. sore knee 🙂

  13. nedajerk

The phatom DL has returned. Notice how a pitcher get bomb they so fast to put them on the DL. I wouldn’t be shock if Broxton is next.

  14. knouffbrock@frontiernet.net

Where there’s life there’s hope. I’m hoping they start playing with a little life tonight. As frustrating as July was, I still can’t give up.

  15. Dodger4life

Good Evening Dodger Faithful, and Our Beloved Boy’s in Blue.
    .
    Congratulations to the Ethier Family.
    .
    I Still Believe!!!
    .
    LET’S GO DODGERS, LET’S GO!!!!

  16. enchantedbeaver

Ned should’ve taken the million for Manny. Now outside of a few meaningless ABs before he goes back on the DL for the rest of the season, they get nothing.

But really, given the make-up of this team do you honestly think that even a 2008 Manny would make a difference when you’ve got messers. Blake, Theriot and Martin in the order, plus a struggling Dre, no bully, and inconsistant starters? Then throw in a first place team that substantially helped itself at the trade deadline. Unless these guys show a little pride, I think we’ll finish 10 games under .500 easy.

  17. nedajerk

    Garcia 3.0 7 6 2 0 3 0 1.31 2.42

Look like the Astros didn’t have trouble scoring 6 runs on 7 hits in 3 innings.

  18. oldbrooklynfan

    Hello ITD
Well another night of starring at the screen and waiting for something good to happen.
I know most would like to forget it but it’s hard to get over 5 consecutive hits without scoring a run.
And what a time for that to happen.
Someday it will probably be a trivia question.
We need a win, even if it is just to break this losing spell.
    .
Hey the Dodgers got a Giglio, that means Lilly in Italian. maybe it’s for good luck.
    WE SURE NEED SOME.

  19. jhallwally

Why in the hell wasn’t Martin sliding into home on that play. Geez!! He would have been safe!!! Another base running brain f*rt!!!!

  20. colliethec

Does anyone else find it funny that one of our pick ups gave up a dinger to one of theirs?
    .
I just saw the replay of the play at home on Russ. #1 he didn’t slide (If he did he would of been safe and the knee wouldn’t of been injured). #2 The on deck hitter (Lilly) should of been on the 1st base side of home and telling him to slide. He was standing on the 3rd base side watching. We continue to not play smart ball.

  21. colliethec

They just haven’t played smart baseball all year and that is on the coaching staff/manager. If a guy keeps doing the same stupid thing then be a leader and do something about it. It seems as if Joe is just collecting a paycheck.

  22. colliethec

Hello there Wally — hey Beav…
    .
Yup I was okay with Joe in the past but this year he has been just stupid in so many situations. Almost like he just wanted to have the boys have to fight uphill to stick it to these lame owners.

  23. nedajerk

lol when was the last time a pitcher thrown 3 straight curveball. I don’t even think Kershaw did that before.

  24. nedajerk

Oh Vinny that would make me happy with that stats and you just have to thrown that 2.10 ERA in 16 games from our starters and yes we should win alot of games but we’re not.

  25. jhallwally

Hi’Ya Collie!! They just can’t seem to get their heads out of their a**es!! This team doesn’t do the little fundamental things that win ball games!!! That is a reflection of the manager and coaching staff!!!

  26. jhallwally

I agree Collie!! Nice post. You’re super time warped!!!

  27. colliethec

Oh man I was tryin’ to have some fun but now I’m on ITDFST.
    .
Hello there everybody I’ve caught up with all of you!

  28. jhallwally

Manny’s going into the Schidt, Tomko, Phew signing category!!! 20M down the drain!!! Sans the juice, he’s got nothing!!! Ask Roger and Barry!!!

  29. colliethec

Shad — Don’t worry I was trying to have some fun since I was on real time & everybody else was on ITDFST. Just trying to amuse myself. I’m strange like that!

  30. jhallwally

It’s all good Shad!!! Keep rooting hard. We’re all a bit befuddled and p*ssed with our teams play these days!!!!

  31. trublu4ever

Lilly is doing a great job tonight. Just wonder how far good-old Joe will let him go before he screws everything up?!

  32. colliethec

I have to say that Lilli has pitched a nice game. He settled down after that 1st bomb.
    .
Hopefully the bully can save a 1 run lead. We are winning but again what’s with the 2 runs?!

  33. nedajerk

I forgot the attendance but it’s around 38,000+ and maybe this time it would be around that for the rest of the season

  34. oldbrooklynfan

Now it’s getting scary-can we hold this lead?
    .
I just started having trouble with MLB.TV, first time in months.
    A lot of freeze screens.

  35. jhallwally

I will be very happy when JoJo goes away. I hope Honeycutt goes with him. I’m not sure that Mattingly is the answer. We need a manager with brains and balls!! Where have you gone Mike Scioscia!!!! Damn’!!!!

  36. nellyjune

I can’t believe he pulled Lilly, but Shad you are right! I didn’t expect Joe to let him pitch a CG. How ridiculous would that be to allow a pitcher who has pitched so well to give his game up to our bullpen, but that’s Joe for ya!!

It was a lovely evening watching the gnats win 8-0 😦

  38. koufax1963

well that is the best dodgers win Ive seen in a long time, and the best dodgers news all day. DL furcal? Manny extended, Weaver?
Geez! now we win 2 more in a row
    Hi ITD Cheers!

  39. nellyjune

Great pitching job by Lilly tonight. I was a little worried after the home run by Tejada, but he settled down really well.

  40. oldbrooklynfan

I don’t like the fact that we helped the Giants but I’m happy for Broxton and the Dodgers (and the rest of us).
That was a tremendous performance by Ted Lilly. Let me call him “The Giglio”. italian for “Lilly”.

  41. colliethec

I was telling Wifey about the DL’ing of Weaver, Ferks back, and Manny’s continued leg problem and she responed with the quote of the day… “That’s what happens when you sign a bunch of old dudes…”. She isn’t just cute but funny!!

  42. nellyjune

I am not to thrilled with helping the Giants out at this point, but I agree…………….we definitely needed this. If we want a chance at the top, we need the top to start falling down, and we just knocked the Padres down one.

My thinking while watching the Giants/Rockies game is that whoever is in charge of the game balls gave the secret ball bag of “leave the park in droves baseballs” to the wrong dugout.

  43. nellyjune

I am sure you are aware of this because I haven’t read the entire thread, but JP hit a homerun today. Pigs must have flown overhead today 🙂

  44. nellyjune

They may have, but they changed the channel after it was 8-0, and I got to finish watching the Dodger game 🙂

  45. Dodger4life

First and foremost……We won a damnnnnnnn game. Not to take anything away from Joe Pierre and the expierience we all were privlidged to be a part off. But our own team mom and true mom, went beyond the call of duty, without any publicity. They invited me into thier home, when I was without one of my own. They gave me hope when few others would. I cannot begin to describe all the sacrifices that not only Nelly and Tru went through, to see me through these tough times, not to mention the other half. You know the Giant side. Bill~ Mike, I mean you……Love ya death…….This was brought about through ITD, and it is the foundation of everything, I want my Dodgers to stand for. I really don’t know where I am going with this, but I feel propelled to say how I feel. I think the world of the comments on here, I really do. I am going to take a step back now…….but seriously, if this was you being critized, or someone you cared about, would you feel good with what was being said??? Would you say the same to a neighbor, a friend?? The Dodgers of yesteryear are a great example of what is good in the game of baseball….I think that is what we are all trying to portray…….I, just think ,somewhere along the lines we all, myself included have lost track of what we want this club to be……..I love the Dodgers, and in saying this, I believe in living life ,baseball and otherwise to the contrary……BE L.A.!!!!!!
    BE L.A!!!!

  46. trublu4ever

Good Morning ITDland. Thank-you, Dodger4life, for your kind words. I enjoyed having you 🙂
    .
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CAT.
    .
Let’s try for a two game winning streak tonight — GO DODGERS!!!

sorry my comp was having problems, but I agree with you.

A win..but gosh Broxton makes me nervous now. first pitch ball and always in hitters counts. but we won!! we can still do this, but not with those two loosers at the top of the order. Ned has made us worse on offense if thats possible cause now that idiot Torre is gonna hit low obp, low poer guys the most at bats again. It’s a Juan Pierre nightmare all over again for me..

  48. crzblue2

    Hello ITD!
I was worry there for a minute when I saw Lilly wearing #29 but he came thru! And I was so happy for Broxton to get the save.
    .
Great job on the song BP1!
    .
I am excited that I and my guest get to watch BP ON the field tonight and I am finally going to get my baseball!
    .
    Thank you Jeff!
    thank you Joe Torre!
    http://www.joetorre.org/

  49. jason.ungar@yahoo.com

I think it’s pitching and defense. Every year, every team I have seen goes in and out of the offense but as long as you pitch well and catch well…Like there were alot of games earlier in the year we lost 8-6 or whatever. It’s like in golf of course you want to stripe it but when you are not if you have a solid defensive game (short game + strategy) you can still score decent. Just ask Bob! Right Bob???

  50. thinkingblue

DODGER4LIFE: Your energy is contagious! LOVE IT! LET’S GO DODGERS, LET’S GO!
    *
JASON – I don’t like BROXTON…Each time he comes on I have to walk away. I’ve attended so many games were we are winning and BROXTON BLOWS IT AWAY! I don’t know how HE GOT THE SAVE. 2 players manage to get on base and if it wasn’t for the fast thinking of the INFIELDERS we would of tied or even lost last night’s game. BROXTON sucks. BLOW IT BROXTON! ONE-PITCH PITCHER (he only has the fast ball). And yes he makes me extremely nervous too! Now I should completely blame him since management were the ones to put him as the closer when he was NOT ready!
    *
But to keep spreading DODGER4LIFE’S ENERGY…….
    LET’S GO DODGERS! LET’S GOOOOOOOOO!
    WE NEED DODGER’S HOME-RUNS BACK!
WE NEED THE DODGER’S DYNAMIC DUO BACK!
    WE NEED CAPTAIN MARTIN BACK!
    and when he comes back
WE NEED MANNY TO BE MANNY AGAIN!
WE NEED DODGERS TO BE #1 AGAIN!
    and something we didn’t have
    WE NEED FREAKEN FANTASTIC PITCHING!
    LET’S GO DODGERS!

  51. thinkingblue

Oh just realized….we had all the above mentioned last year and it was NOT good enough. :0(
WE NEED DODGERS TO BE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!
    WE NEED THE RING!
