The King of Pop
In the past year, the 80s have made a surprising surge back to relevance in Hollywood. Movie remakes of 80s movies (Clash of the Titans), 80s toys turned into movies (Transformers), 80s TV shows turned into movies (A-Team), even movies about returning to the 80s (Hot Tub Time Machine).
We’ve decided to ride the wave back to the days of Space Invaders, the Delorean and of course, the King of Pop as we celebrate 80s Night in less than two weeks at Dodger Stadium (August 6th for those keeping track).
In honor of the decade that brought us Bon Jovi and Big Hair, the entertainment for the evening will have an acid-washed tint to it. In addition, the first 20,000 fans will take home a limited-edition poster featuring Matt Kemp. We penciled in Kemp as the 80s poster-boy back in January, however, we didn’t determine the exact direction for its design until about a month ago.
As some of you may have seen on twitter and even Deadspin the resulting shoot will remind many of the days of “Thriller”, “Beat it” and the moonwalk.
Kemp was happy to lend his likeness to the poster, but I don’t think he knew exactly what he was getting in to when we agreed to take part in the photo shoot on Friday. We had a full wardrobe ready, with an authentic (read: costume shop replica) red leather jacket, aviators, fedora, white v-neck and of course, a silver glove! Matt already has a gold one to go with it, but once he slid the glove on, donned the fedora, and looked into the camera, MK channeled MJ pretty quickly. Using my iPhone as the soundtrack (hopefully DMN can enhance the audio on the Inside Dodgertown piece coming soon) Kemp gave us a few “he-heee’s” as he struck poses under the direction of Jon SooHoo.
The shot to be used is still to be determined, but Matt gave us plenty to work with and we’ll release the design on dodgers.com later this week. For now, start digging out the legwarmers and parachute pants (in Dodger blue of course) and plan on joining us August 6th as the Nationals come to town on 80s Night with their prodigal pitcher, Stephen Strasburg (born in 1988!), scheduled to pitch (perhaps against Kershaw, given that he’s also scheduled to pitch on Sunday due to his suspension). Here’s hoping Kemp proves to be the king of pop at the plate when the two face each other.

Yep most of them was about Garza 1st no hitter in TB history and the Mets and Padres are the only teams that haven’t thrown one. Doug Harvey was the 1st and last ump to thrown Torre out of a game but the last one was on purpose.
I wrote this on the other thread. Yeah trade Martin bring up Santana, trade Blake bring up Mitchell, and I doubt he can do much worst than Blake, trade Manny to TB because they might bite and needs a DH and called up Hoffman, dump Belliard and GA but I know someone would bite on Belliard if we trade him when his value is low and calling up Gibbons and a utility infielder. Oh wait we can’t do the 1st one because we have no Santana damn Ned or should we blame McCourt for that one. I think McCourt was stubborn for that one.

Fans at Dodger Stadium, on the other hand, seem to have gotten used to his absence. Mannywood, the field-level section in the left-field corner that was once the heartbeat of the ballpark, is a deserted, forlorn section these days. There is no more Ramirez buzz, as there was when he came to the Dodgers this time of year two seasons ago and led the team to its first appearance in the NLCS since 1988.

I was just saying that giving up at this point, is not an option, I am prepared to make. That the struggles up to this point, can be erased and that it takes a good attitude along with fundementally sound play.

Why is it more difficult to win in a hostile enviroment, than a positive one?? Why can teams and players, such as the 84 Olympic Hockey team overcome severe odds. I don’t know the answer, but whatever it is, I see no reason why our Boy’s can’t dig deep and do the same. Timing seems to be a big factor in the chase as well, and there is no time like the present.

Although Frank McCourt is the only person that can truly dictate the circumstances surrounding personell. It isn’t entirely impossible for this team to overcome his inadeqaucies. I prefer to look at it as an uphill battle instead of a losing one. Thats all! The law of averages or baseball say’s, I will be wrong more than not. You can’t win em all, but without a positive outlook, your climb is just that much more difficult.

Nancy Bea starts in 1988, that last WS win, at that moment in time I did not think it would 20 plus years without another WS win, let alone just an appearence in the WS. The 80s seem good in retrospect, although with the campanis incident mentioned, it was the beginning of a reshaping of our Dodgers, away went our infield foundation, and free agents began to be a the fix it (lets get Eddie Murray) and slowly the foul territory grew smaller and the luxury seats became more expensive. Lasorda didn’t yell as much. NO doubt why O’Malley sold them off.
Enough of that nostalgia. Lets go Dodgers. Keep the win streak going, about 13 more would be nice, if not needed.

NSB, thanks for the post about Nancy Bea. It is interesting how precious she is to Dodger fans, many of which I would guess would like to hear more from her and less from the rock music played between innings.
Ah, memories from the 1980’s, that era so long ago when the Dodgers last appeared (and won) the World Series. That era where we knew every year who was going to manage the team and where the owner was seldom seen but whose presence was definitely felt by the way he ran the organization and the way he conducted his own personal affairs. Yes, there were some tough moments as well. Who can forget pitching to Jack Clark or the sordid Al Campanis affair on Nightline? Pedro Guerrero’s base running skills. And eyeblack on Gibbie’s hat.
And speaking of Gibbie, I wonder how he would have responded to being asked to dress up for a promo poster as the team was struggling to keep up with the division leader? Not that I am criticizing Kemp for doing so; I think it is great he and the others are such good sports.

If you’re really striking out for some big fan attractions, you could give the first 20,000 fans a voodoo doll looking like Frank McCourt along with a long and sharp hat pin. I might rush right out myself for that event. We might even see Jamie there. If that attraction is a winner, we could follow up with Ned dolls, then Mannion, then Joe, and maybe even a Donny Boy for a middle of the week off-night.

Did anyone else notice the photo of Torre and Martin hugging before the game tonight? It was sort of weird looking to me. Almost like they were 2 friends or brothers saying goodbye. I’m not sure if it’s reading anything into the photo as I’m sure that if Martin was being traded he wouldn’t of been playing in the game or have that reaction in the dugout but maybe he knows something is amiss. When I saw the lineup last night I thought it was not one to strike fear into anybodies heart, but it was obviously good enough. Just goes to show you can’t give up even with this side show going on. Got to credit the pitchers with this one.

It’s like any good soap opera, whether you are into the daytime and/or the night time variety. All the characters are relatively the same with the same issues as they had when you last talked about them months ago.
……………but like any good soap opera, it’s hard not to watch and can be slightly (okay more than slightly for some) addictive.
I wonder if getting Podsednik means Manny is going to be moved? As far as I know, a player can’t be traded while on the DL.

I wasn’t too against Carroll when we got him. I liked him when he played for the Rockies and then kind of lost track of him when he left there. He has been one of the good surprises this season. As far as Podsednik, I like him as well, but I think there is more coming down the pike and that is what scares me. Who is going and who is coming?

Could this team slump be due to the fact that our owner is an idiot? I mean really, how can all this crap not affect the team as a whole? I know the players are all saying the right things, but what else are they supposed to say? The guy is your boss. Work environment is a big deal. Joe has called this squad underachievers, Mattingly say’s they need to get back to the basics at the plate, and work the count better. Bills say’s that players feed off each other, and it is kind of fun. I tend to agree with all of these ( Pearls of Wisdom ) borrowing that line from Tony Jackson.

My thoughts on Podsednik, are that we clearly need a spark on offense, and his BA is above .300. X Paul is inexpierenced, and although, I like him. Having someone who appears to be a consistant bat in the line – up, is an upgrade, if we are going to remain in the mix of things. Losing Lucas May even if he is as good as Martin ( and I don’t believe is ) doesn’t bother me much. Although Ned saying, we will cross that bridge when we need to does. I realize this is after the fact, and lbirk, I read your thoughts and respect them. ( my thought’s are, trading Santana, even with a young and promising Russell was a mistake. ( especially the way it appears to have been done. ) I am not saying, I have no faith in Russ, ( I DO ) or that I regret getting Blake, (I DON’T. ) Just that it was a valuable asset to have, and it was similiar to hocking your work tools at the pawn shop. Anyhow that is history, just as the first two thirds of this season are.

The last third of the season is a battle, so losing one game to the Padre’s is just one game. We need to start going about our buisiness one pitch, one swing, one put out at a time. Making sure we maximize our opportunities, in every aspect of the game. We don’t need heroe’s, we need smart ballplayers. We are getting better, Belisario may be back soon, Sherrill is contributing more to the game than he has, Jansen has fit in nicely, the starters are giving us quality starts, Raffy is providing leadership on both sides of the field. Those are all positive aspects of the game, that we have going our way. Now we just need to capitlize on them and further our quest to be elite at the seasons end. As far as the post season anything can happen. Although as for now it should be one pitch, one swing and one put out at a time….doing so with bliders and a smile…a great big smile.

It looks like Oswalt might be wearing a Phillies uniform.
With all due respect to the Dodger faithful (call me a pessimist, I prefer realist though) what the hell do we need with another 34 year old OFer for at the expense of another catcher that has to be at least as good as Martin? Is Martin so wonderful all of a sudden that we can’t live without him? Or does Frank eye a potential 20% paycut to him as a good thing (though May would’ve cost him 1/12th as much.) And let’s face is, Ellis never projected to be anything more than a back-up.
This team has no hope of competing this year or the future. We’re always one bad start away from another loss, and given Billz’s, Padilla’s and Kersh’s track record, there’s several more bad starts in there. The bully stinks on ice if their names aren’t Brox, Kuo or Jansen. You’ve got a 3Bman that’s gone into the Nomar zone where no 3Bman should’ve gone before. We’ve a 2Bman that should probably be playing in AAA if not AA. No hitting… Slacking defense… What’s for Ned to save?
And that’s just this season. Next season it gets worse with Frank Can’t or Won’t Spend McCourt.
Dig a hole, push this season in, and cover it over. Unless ownership and management change, we’re looking at being the Cubbies for a long long time.
Of course Oswalt’s in a Phillies uniform. THAT TEAM knows how to make it to the World Series (and win). McCourt can tout two appearances to the NLCS, but the Phillies can tout their killer instinct to make it to the next step and beyond.
I welcome Scott Posednik to the club, and he will be innocent in my eyes ’til proven guilty. But here’s the impression I’ve gathered from him (from living with a White Sox fan over the past decade).
Over the past 3 years, any time Posednik’s name was mentioned, the White Sox fan either sighed, or angrily grumbled. Sound familiar?
Well, according to what I’ve read, good average, not so good slugging percentage, fast, likes to steal, gets caught stealing too (someone else can look up stats, I’m not the most stat-minded person). Sound familiar?
Like I said, I see him innocent ’til proven guilty. But if the stats and trade papers are to be believed, this move means that management, the GM and Front Office agree that the problem with this team is not enough high BA/low OBS pop. Sound familiar?
As long as Frank McCourt owns the team, we’ll be good enough to make the playoffs, but will never be given the tools from outside our organization to make it over the hump.

If we were dealing with Kansas City, I would’ve hoped we would’ve scored Greinke. So much for that, I’m sure Ned Colletti was disappointed to learn that the outfielder he was mostly interested in hasn’t been able to recuperate from that devastating hip injury against the Bengals in ’91.
I was gonna type something longer, but went ahead and deleted it. There’s no point in talking to a brick wall (or a tin ear), and granted, I’m just a 29 year old who has yet to make a name for himself in this world, I wouldn’t know how to run a World Championship-grade baseball franchise either.
But it doesn’t take inherent Baseball Business knowledge to read between the lines on what Frank McCourt thinks of Dodger fans. He would do well to heed the old saying “Actions speak louder than words”. Dodger fans have been fooled too many times, and the empty stadium and torrents of sudden ticket deals speak for themselves.
Frank McCourt can talk about Dodger Tradition and winning all he wants, if he isn’t going to do what it takes to win the World Championship, that’s the only concrete thing that matters.
And Dodger fans are not like Red Sox fans. We do not celebrate pennants or “division championships”. We celebrate World Championships. That is the definition of success in sports, if you don’t believe me, look at the career of Dan Marino. (and how perfect would it be for Don Mattingly to manage under this paradigm?)
“Wanting to win” and “Doing what it takes to win” are two entirely different statements. There is no doubt in my mind that Frank McCourt “wants to win”.
Despite 4 playoff “appearances” in 6 years, Frank McCourt does not have what it takes to win a World Championship.

BTW, does it surprise anyone that Miller cleared waivers and is back at Albuquerque? Are there any DFAs of ours this season that didn’t clear waivers? I think Green decided to be a free agent rather than accept going back to Alb. (which is why we have Castro AGAIN), and one of the Ortizi may have gotten picked up by the Mets, but doesn’t the fact that NOBODY wants these guys speak volumes for their abilities in the first place? And doesn’t that speak volumes towards Ned’s ability to get even reasonably talented players?
I’ve said this before too, and I’ll say it again – this organization is an embarrassment to its fans.

This team just seems to lack the BELIEF that they can win it all. As has been the case the past few seasons, when push comes to shove, who are the ones carrying their weight? The kids. Top three in the two most important categories: runs (Kemp, Furcal, Loney)…RBIs (Loney, Ethier, Kemp). The Angels are already taking of selling, not buying. Somehow, I think this team would survive down the stretch run (if there be such a thing for this club) without Blake, Carroll, Belliard, Anderson, Johnson, Traschner, Sherrill and Ausmus. Could the Dodgers get ANYTHING for these Ned gems? Probably not, but somewhere out there is a contender that must need a tweak or two…

The thing that’s painfull is that this organization had some great young players and were in a position to win for years that would probably of breed a winning attitude/tradition for a few years. But I fear the good players we have now will jump ship as soon as they can which will set us back a few more years.

Good job Emma. NSB, I echo your comments. Wanting to and getting the job done are quite different. I have no idea if the ownership squabbles affect the players. Really, does anyone really think major league players play for the owner? They play for themselves, their teammates, maybe a manager, and maybe for the fans as well. I am not a stat guy either but from where I sit, the Dodgers are not winning because the core group we all touted is not getting the job done. What did you really expect from Blake, Manny and Furcal? Actually Furcal has done well recently. Didn’t you expect more from Kemp, Martin (seriously), Ethier and Loney? Not that what they are doing is bad, it is just not good enough to carry this team. This team still lacks a superstar. Maybe Kemp and Ethier still can get there. Let’s hope so.
I know I supported the trade for Blake even if it meant giving up a catching prospect. I am not sure about this recent deal but it is telling for one big reason: Ned is dealing with the here and now. Is it possible even he no longer is looking at anything beyond this season?
