The outfield arrives and talks…
Manny Ramirez, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier all reported early today, and Manny chatted with the media a few minutes ago.
He said that he hit quite a bit this offseason to try and figure out the mechanical issues that had him a bit off during the end of last season. He also said that he expects this to be his last year at the Dodgers so he’s going to enjoy it as much as possible. His funniest line, I thought, was when he told reporters that from the waste down, he feels 15 years old but from the neck up, he feels 43.
Anyway, that’s the buzz around camp at the moment. Andre and Matt haven’t really spoken yet to the media in a group, but I know Ken Gurnick chatted with Andre when the clubhouse opened, so I’m sure stories will be on the front of the site soon.

Y’all realize that a flatline salary scale through 2018 precludes the club from keeping the core group intact through their first few years of free agency.

This ownership counts on the fact that they can put whatever product they want out there at whatever price they want to charge and people will still come in droves to the ballpark. The only way to hit them where they live is to wise-up and not play the game. I’m surprised they haven’t figured out a way to charge for the blog yet. They do and I’m outta here because I won’t support these clowns in any way, shape or form.
Only reason I’m relatively calm is because opening day is only 62 days away.
I’m sure that somewhere in yet undisclosed future plans is for Frank (#482+++) to charge an annual fee for participation in ITD. That’s, of course, if MLB will let them – what, with Selig in charge, is there any doubt?
I’d say, support the boys, but boycott the ownership. Don’t go to games and don’t buy their overpriced souvenirs. Less revenue is the ONLY thing the McLeverages understand. And make no mistake, less revenue isn’t going to impact the core group because there’s no way in hell they’re going to keep them when they become free agents anyway.

A lot of negative comments. This is spring, be happy baseball is about to start, we have a chance to go all the way. It seems that every year there are a lot of crybabies out there. If you can’t get just the players you want you complain and gripe. Grow up, and enjoy the game for what it is, a great competition, where any team can win on any day. The best pitcher can be beat and the weakest hitter can be the hero. Enjoy the day for we do not know what tomorrow will bring. Go Dodgers!!!

Wow!! I haven’t been on PST in a lonnng time, and I thought I was comment 16, but that would be you Dodger4life.
I can see another season of discontent approaching before my very eyes. Remember all the shenanigans, to put it politely, that Manny underwent with the Sox before they unloaded him? For Manny to state up front that this is his last season with the Dodgers is totally out of place before the season has even started. What kind of mindset is he bringing to this season for us? I knew that Frank and Ned were overdoing it with the two year deal, especially when the second year was at the option of Manny only. I hope this does not portend the kind of season that Manny last spent in Beantown.
What we need is to prepare a stud for our outfield to fully take over next season when Manny is finally gone. I don’t think Manny’ll be producing much, and I’d like to see him gone to DH duty somewhere else by the end of July.
In the meantime, what’s the status of Mannywood going to be? Do we need to exhibit a few dumpsters out there in LF – preferably with Frank’s picture on one, Ned’s on the other.
Bear…So far Manny has showed up on time to spring training. For the betterment of the team, this is good. I have said that as long as Manny acts in a Dodger Pride fashion….I am behind him 100%!! We all knew he was destined for the A.L soon…. this is not surprising news. Yes, I agree that one of the youngsters need to be prepped for his departure……I understand your perspective on Manny though 🙂

It will be sad to see Manny go, no matter what kind of a year he has but I know we all want to see him finish in a blase of glory.
From the for what is worth department:
I have been in a Dodger season ticket partnership for quite a few years. The partnership used to include 8 partners, meaning we each ended up with 10 games. Last season the ticket owner brought in two more partners because of his concern that rising ticket prices would make it more difficutl to retain partners and/or find replacements for partners who left. While we did not have that much turnover in partners over the years, the rising ticket costs over the past few years has been a concern. For years our seat location did not change. But the past three seasons, including the upcoming one, our location has improved each season. We began in the lodge section down the right field line and we now are just a bit to the right of home plate. The only way this could happen is for whatever reason, long time season ticket holders have given up their seats, allowing other long time season ticket holders a chance to improve. I am not sure how often the ticket owner tried to improve our seats but there has to be a reason we have been able to significantly improve the location, even compared to last season’s location. Draw you own conclusions.
But this does point to a problem I have mentioned when others have suggested sending a message to ownership that affects its wallet. I can understand giving up tickets because the cost is greater than the customer is willing or able to pay. But to do so just in hopes such a move will influence ownership’s behavior is not a move I am willing to make just yet because even if that behavior does change, those seats will be gone. So if you want to attend the games and can afford to do so, by all means do it. If you want to “send a message”, don’t buy anything while you are there. Bring you own food and resist the other stuff.
As for Manny, while I suppose it would be been better for him to just say the usual stuff such as, ” I am looking forward to the season”, or ” I will do whatever the manager wants to help this team win”, or ” I worked hard during the offseason getting into shape and working on my hitting”, or “I am concentrating on this season. Let’s wait to see what happens before we talk about next season”, does it really matter what he says? I like Ned’s response: I hope Manny has a banner year and some American league team pays him a lot of money to be a DH next season because that would mean he had a great year for the Dodgers this season. We should be so lucky.
Single game tickets go on sale March 6th. However, if you want to see the Yankee game, you have to purchase a Mini-Plan…….Typical management move!
I’m out here in SE Utah and try to see a game a year, and came out to LA the last time the Yanks were in town. Now it’s impossible with this new mini-plan garbage. It would be impossible for me to get tics for opening day or the Yanks. With these new revelations about the projected salaries, and the new tickets policy, I’ve got to say I’m less than impressed by management.

Don’t mean to play Dr. Laura, but the McCourts could have saved themselves a lot of money and grief if they’d just seen a good marriage counselor…you know, each one willing to accept grown-up reality, but determined to grow and make their love right again. God forbid they should make mature choices. Fashioning a financial empire obviously left them vacant. I don’t believe in irreconcilable differences..that is until one or the other starts unzipping his/her pants. Then the whole shebang is blown right out of the water. Just ask Tiger. Spoiled children. This is a relative non-story, and Manny, battered by PED accusations and Father Time, can ill afford another temper-tantrum like the one he put Boston through every offseason, and I’m fairly certain Scotty Warbucks reminds him of that every day. I wouldn’t believe anything either of them come up with now. In the land of shady people, these two have set up shop underneath a rainforest canopy. Before long, Frank will be saying that Jamie would move the team to Boston, then Jamie will say that Frank is spending the Think Cure! money at Santa Anita, and then Jamie will say Frank is a doodyhead, then Frank will prepare the “I’m Rubber, You’re Glue” statement.
Jon Weisman pointed out on Dodger Thoughts that the whole revenue document could’ve been a ploy to get foreign investors to invest in the alleged Dodgers/Beijing/Premiere League partnership by making the Dodgers’ finances look too-good-to-be-true. That would make sense.
I’m looking forward to reading about the team in the sports pages, and not on TMZ or CourtTV. And I don’t think it’s wise to shoot the messenger. I don’t like it when people come to my job and give me crap because of something my boss is making me do (which the franchise is making the boss do… which the corporation is making the franchise do… etc…), so the thought of doing the same to Josh has never seemed appealing.

It’s great seeing the word “star” next to Andre’s name. I know he will never take that status for granted, but having been an avid fan of his since he was traded from the A’s, I am glad this day finally came because we Ethieraholics knew it all along. I can’t wait to see how our young core progresses this season. 10 Days and 12 hours until their first spring training game. Can’t wait to see them take the field once again.

In the photo gallery on the home page, Broxton is looking really good, and Casey Blake clean shaven will take some getting used to, but he’s not bad either. There aren’t any photos of Russell where you can specifically tell anything different. Andre looks fabulous!!!

I going to take Josh to task for most of what he says due to recent revelations made about ticket prices and revenues generated. Before someone posts the same tired arguement, “Josh is just doing his job,” let me point out that I am not disagreeing with the fact that he is doing his job. What I’m hammering on is the fact that he sounds like a complete shill in this article.

Payroll has not risen, stadium improvements were put on hold and if memory serves me correct, the Dodgers have rid themselves of some pretty high-paying roles in the last few months and not replaced those individuals person-for-person. Could the increase be that Frank wants that line of credit to raise so he can continue to withdraw money from the Ticket ATM machine? Hmm….

As for Manny, I do not have a problem with what he said, it is obvious he will not be back. I did not hear the whole interview so I do not know what he was asked. It is his way of getting it out there, I truly believe he is happy to play in LA and wishes he could stay, but Father Time and Mr McCourt will not allow…Go Manny and produce like you are capable..

Just a comment here on how I regard Josh’s function, particularly in light of the fine post above by Cy.
I’ve not had the opportunity to meet him personally, as many of you who attended the ITD event have. I’m sure he is a personable individual and feels that part of his job is to relate to the fans and be a link between them and ownership/ management. Does that make him sacrosanct for a degree of criticism when other fans feel it is due? I view his function here on ITD on two levels. I do appreciate him maintaining this blog and furnishing us the sports related information concerning our team and individual team members. I take his remarks in that respect at face value. When it comes to explaining and justifying the franchise and ownership/ management actions, however, I don’t think he has any more credibility than Punxsutawney Phil – in fact a lot less, because Punxsutawney has at least a 50/50 chance of being right. That shouldn’t subject Josh to insults such as we amply throw the way of Frank and Ned, nor negative remarks toward our ITD members who hold Josh in high regard for their own reasons. I won’t assign one of those numeric designations to Josh, but I won’t buy what he has to tell us about management justification for team finances for instance. As a VP, and probably a highly paid one at that, he’s not just a “messenger”, but part of the overall management with presumably some decision making power, or at least with some advisory influence.
As to the economic decisions concerning the team, I’m seeing a Mannion influence at work. When you talk about maximizing the brand value, of not selling just single tickets to major attraction games, that all smells of PortaPotty to me. He’s not likely to suck in any of my dollars – due to my distant location, if I have the ability to catch a Dodger game, it will probably be in Seattle or SF. Mannion is clearly not a friend of the “family of four” who can only attend a game or two a year, unless they want to settle for seeing the Pirates or KC on some indistinct evening that doesn’t affect a pennant race. But that’s probably the nature of sports attendance anymore. So, to Mannion and his kin in the sports world, a hearty #482 to you too!
Oh, and Josh, please tell Frank that a “small vocal minority” here wants him to
SELL THE TEAM!
That’s why I stick to fishing. Its more relaxing, cheaper, and less aggrevating unless you get caught in a snag or lose that 5 friggin’ pound rainbow like I did in the Owens River a few years ago.

Ahhh, the glory of Spring Training and the agony of this ownership. It’s not so much the product; I really like this year’s squad…Manny, Kershaw, Ethier, Kemp, maybe a feel-good story like Gagne. And Vinny. But the McCourts are an utter embarrassment to me as a Dodger fan, both in their personal life and their business life. Not sure how the train got so miserably off track, but even one Rupert Murdock or Frank McCourt is too much for any franchise to swallow. We here in Dodger land got two full gulps of the stinking swill.
Kahli – You make a good point about the embarrassment. However, I would also say that it is not just the ownership (although they drive it all), but the front office in general.
Kahli, I pretty much supported the McCourts until recently even if I did not support every move. I am convinced Frank and Jamie wanted very much to put a winning team on the field and improve Dodger Stadium. While I am sure Frank still wants very much to win, I too am peeved at what I see as a bit of arrogance and selfishness. I know the Dodgers are a business and need to be run like one but all of that should be transparent to the fans.
However, I think we should be careful in reacting to all the crap that has been made public and what is to come as Frank and Jamie battle for control of the Dodgers. I have no doubt Jamie’s lawyers will do whatever they can to embarrass Frank and make him look bad, and his lawyers will do the same to her. With the way these two people have acted, making either one look bad will be easy.

I find it disturbing that our team was one of the top stories on Sports Nation today…..their #2 story of the day was the fact that a team rich in history and one of the most profitable franchises would not allow the fans to buy a ticket to see the Yankees play. We are going to be an embarassment as long as Frank and or Jamie are in charge. I feel sorry for us, the fans, and the players, who have to put up with all the crap.
I just took a quick look at the Red Sox web site to see how they are handling tickets and found they are offering tickets to some Yankee games and the Dodger series via a lottery system. And if I am not mistaken, the Angels started charging tiered pricing for their tickets depending upon the opponent a few seasons ago, so it is not only the Dodgers that try to maximize revenue. That being said, I have always been a fan of the saying, “just because something can be done does not always mean that it should”. The Dodger organization has to accept repsonsibility for all its business practices.
lbirken – I don’t see an issue with the varied pricing structure. It is a reality that is just coming to the Dodgers. However, being unable to buy single tickets for a game and instead being forced to buy at least mini plans is simply unacceptable for the Dodgers. Since when do the Dodgers need to use the visiting team as a marketing ploy? Those games could have all been part of the varied pricing structure and all sold out very easily. However, the front office saw this as an easy way to screw the fans by making them buy tickets to many more games to have the priviledge to have the tickets to one Yankee game. That is absolutely ridiculous.
All I said is I understand why the Dodgers would take this marketing position. I did not say I agreed with it or that I think it is the right thing to do. I do wonder if anyone in the organization did raise the issue internally and at least asked if the organization was prepared for some negative reaction to this ploy. Actually, I think the Red Sox idea of offering such highly sought after tickets in a some sort of lottery system makes a lot of sense.

To your points in the followup to my post, I would hope that the Dodgers have internal discussions about possible reactions to their decisions (that seems like a good business practice), but one never can tell with this front office. As far as the lottery system goes for tickets, I agree that seems like a much more fair way to go then making fans by tickets to 14 additional games just to be able to buy tickets to the Yankee games.

dodgereric – thanks for all literature to back up what we have been saying.
I don’t view us as being negative. We are just stating what are the issues facing the Dodgers as an organization. I don’t think anybody here, once the season begins, will take any of their frustrations with management out on the players. I can parallel this to our current situation with education. I love my job and always will (I think) but I criticize and strongly dislike how the government (federal, state, local, and district) is handling our schools. We are heading into major budget issues once again, which will affect jobs and loss of programs once again. However, with all the things happening around us in education, the students are still arriving in the classroom, and it’s my job to teach them and they need to be unaffected by what is happening around them.
Agree, WE DESERVE BETTER THAN YOU.
