Caravaning throughout Los Angeles…
It’s been an amazing two days hitting all areas around Los Angeles and seeing so many fans out there.
The stories are all over the news and on the front of the site, so check them out and be sure to check out the photo galleries, too. Some great shots.
It certainly has those of us at the organization counting down the days until pitchers and catchers report…17 days left, in case you’re wondering.

In the what the heck file — I went to the local card store the other day and purchased a couple of packs of Topps Series 1 baseball cards. One f the cards I pulled was a R. Martin rookie card. Well not really a rookie player card but a card that had his baby picture on it.

Now some of you might love that but the words that came out of my mouth was, “what the heck?!!!”.

Why would I want his baby picture? Topps sure has taken over the card industry the last few years and really made some bad product. I miss my Donruss cards. They made some great cards that were really nice looking with some great photo’s & graphics and some special surprises at a reasonable price.

For those that don’t follow the baseball card world Donruss lost their licensing on baseball cards a few years ago. & this year Upper Deck has lost it as well. So now it’s just Topps.
.
They wanted to make them more affordable for kids and MLB agreed. I totally agree that some of the cards should be made affordable but some of the Donruss were really nice and at $7.00 a pack not to bad. Topps makes packs that are about $2.00 each and some really high end ones that are like $20+ a pack and some that are $50-100 a pack. Seems to me they just have done what they can to get MLB to go with their company so they can own the whole shabang and remove the middle priced cards.
Collie, I read about Upper Deck losing their MLB licensing… why the heck would Baseball want to put all their eggs in one basket?
Oh yeah, that’s right… Bud Selig is a colossal moron who has his head so far up his blowhole, he sees Captain Ahab.
Just like Reebok owning the rights to the NFL’s jerseys as opposed to owning the rights to 32 different entities, and EA exclusively owning the NFL video games licensing (and I’m sure the MLB and NBA have their exclusive third-party providers, or will before long), this monopolizing is threating the individuality that makes sports enjoyable. If we keep going down this track, all the sports leagues are going to look like the UFL (Look that up on Google).
The scary thing is… Majestic’s jersey contract with MLB is ending soon… can you imagine if Nike gets their hands on that? Swooshes everywhere, and jerseys that look like Rollerball and Tron had a baby. Everyone will look like Oregon’s football team, it’ll all be anarchy.

The Dodgers should take a cue from the Red (I can’t believe I just typed that) when it comes to their Caravan. It seems they actually realize they have fans all over and they actually leave the COUNTY.

With Ned logging obscene amounts of frequent flier miles on his Preferred Customer card with mlbsalvage.com, it’s nice to hear some good news. According to Peter Gammons on mlbtv the other night, Loney has been hitting the workouts real hard this off season and, according to his report, is in exceptional shape. Could mean a breakout season for James…. as usual, you’re on it, nsb. The Caribbean Series is a prime example. If you can get past the corporate logos, you can almost see the team uniforms.
Collie – I haven’t been paying as much attention to the baseball card industry as a business as I should be I guess. It makes sense why I haven’t seen as many different types of cards around. That’s distrubing news about Upper Deck. I actually enjoyed Upper Deck the most as far as the mid-range ones, and as far as the pricier ones now, I have taken a liking to the Bowman cards. I guess this means they are out too then? Topps is/was my least favorite.

I used to get Bowman by the box. I’d get 4-5 memorabilia cards and 4-5 auto’s a box. Plus ton’s of rookies which I liked because I would go to Sacramento Rivercats games and get the players to sign there.

But then they cut those totals in half and raised the prices. The quality went downhill as well. They used to have these parallel cards that were thicker than the rest & trimmed in gold. Now they just are the regular thickness & trimmed in white. Also they would have the facsimile auto on the card so they didn’t look all that good with the real signature on it as well.

The Bowman Sterling cards are awesome but cost a lot.

I liked Upper Deck for their action photo’s and Donruss for many of their metallic cards, such as the Elite ones. The Elite also had some great memorabilia cards.

Donruss still does a type of Elite but they are collage players that have been drafted.

Upper Deck is still selling some cards but they are being sued by MLB for licensing infractions. They are still selling the cards with the players images and the name of the jersey across the front but not the full name. On the back of the cards they don’t have the team name but the city the player played with.

From what I understand MLB wanted to cut down on the different cards that were out there as they felt it was confusing the consumer. Many cards that were considered “rookie” cards weren’t. There were battles over who had the original rookie card for each player by each company.

MLB came up with a logo that was placed on the official “rookie” cards. That has just been changed this year to the MLB logo with “RC” over it.

seesky – I heard that about James too. For the past few nights, the panel on mlbtv has been mentioning James alot, (along with Matt and Andre, a powerful Manny too, if that exists still) and how he can really be a force in the lineup and perhaps have his breakout year.

Well that’s good Collie!! Thanks for the lesson too!! This must put a big wrench into the serious collector like yourself (I am not sure how serious you are, but you have a pretty good system IMO). I mean….isn’t that part of the fun of getting the different brands? I just go to our local comic store (haven’t been there in a while) and say I want a pack of those and a pack of those and a pack of those, or I will go to Target and pick packs off their shelves. I am finding as I am going through team by team this time around (that is how mine are sorted – 30 binders……..one for each team), I have alot of rookie cards that the player is just now hitting their stardom……kind of fun to look at. Also, a few weeks back when I was doing the Angels’ binder, I realized I had Nick Adenhart’s Rookie Card 😦

The same thing happened with my Cory Lidle & Darrel Kile cards. Also my old Thurmon Munson from when I was a little guy living in New York.
:))) Showing my age gang!! We used to buy a pack of baseball cards for a quarter. Yep, 25 cents, with some pretty good gum in them. If you were lucky you got a Mantle, Mays, Koufax, or Drysdale. I remember getting a Clemente, but I wasn’t into the Pirates, so I traded it away for a Dodger player!!! Sure wish I had those cards now!!!
It is funny now, but, you had to brush the sugar dust from the gum off the cards.

Anyhow – what has been so amazing this year as I am going through the teams (and their baseball cards) is all the players that have moved by choice or by trade to other teams. However, the Dodgers lineup (other than DeWitt/Carroll) is the same as last year.

Great memories, thanks gang!!! Then we had to come up with 12 cents for a comic book. Talk about a tight budget!!! If you were lucky, you could find 3 or 4 pop bottles and cash them in for 2 cents each to finance your comic book addiction. Too fun!!!
Speaking of baseball cards, a great thing about the mid 60s were the Union Oil Dodger portraits. I can still see the sweat beads on Ron Perranoski’s forehead. And for every Koufax or Tommy Davis, you had to suffer through Larry Burright and Joe Moeller. But every week I’d run up to the gas station to see who was on tap.

Being a girl, I wasn’t too into the comic books, but my mom used to buy the old 33′ LPs of all the Disney classics that are probably worth a fortune now……………..but sold them at a yard sale, much like many did with baseball cards, not knowing the value they would have had now.

My mom and dad used to play cards all the time and still do!! I just remember my brother and I hanging around a bunch of boys in the neighborhood when I was in elementary school (same school I am teaching at now),and we would play black jack for the pile of baseball cards in the middle.
Jhall – it was my goal to get the Mike Scioscia card every time. He was my Andre back then 🙂

I just read an article in The Times regarding Ramirez’ statistical decline upon his return from the suspension. I know I posted my protest to that here a while ago, but I just wrote into The Times and I’d like to post it here because they’ll never publish it.

I think your new blogger Steve Dilbeck, along with Dodger Manager Joe Torre, ought to work on their statistical research before reaching conclusions.
In his Wednesday article on Manny Ramirez, Dilbeck wrote that ?Torre blamed Manny’s great drop-off last season on the 50-game suspension he served for violating baseball’s drug policy.? Then Dilbeck ran off statistics to prove it.
However, this doesn?t account for what I think was a very important event that happened just after his return. Let me break down his season into 3 sections.
Before suspension, Games 1-29 (Ramirez appeared in 27), he went 32 for 91 (.348), 6 HRs and 20 RBIs. That doesn?t seem like much, but extrapolated to a full season those totals are 36 HRs and 120 RBIs. Dibeck wrote, ?So his average was up pre-suspension, but the power was never really there. Not Manny power.? I dispute this. Thirty-six and 120 may not have been what he did at the end of ?08, but who expects THAT again? Forty and 131 are his career averages. They are pretty close to ?Manny power?.
He returned on July 3rd. The Reds came to town July 20th and got beat 7-5 with Ramirez going 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. The next game he hit a 2-run triple in his first at-bat and then got nailed in the wrist and left the game. The next game he didn?t start, but clubbed that grand slam on Manny Bobblehead Day. That was his last hurrah for a while.
After the suspension and including the game when he was hit in the wrist, Games 80-94, (he appeared in all 15 of those games), he went 16 for 48 (.309), 4 HRs and 13 RBIs. For 162 games, this works out to 44 HRs and 141 RBIs.
After getting hit, he got that memorable PH, played the next two games, took one game off and then played the next 38 games in a row. For games 95-162 (he appeared in 62), he went 54 for 212 (.255), 9 HRs and 30 RBIs. For 162 games, it?s 24 HRs and 79 RBIs.
I contend that it wasn?t the suspension that dropped his numbers, it was getting hit in the wrist and not taking any time off for it to heal. As Yogi used to say, ?You could look it up.?

How are my ITD friends this fine evening? My feelings kinda go back and forth and back and forth again. Oh well, such has been my life for a long time.

No, I won’t be going this year. Too much going on here with the kids and their schedules, and school has been hectic this year, but it’s because of our new principal, not the students. She is not into having fun………..all about academics with very little art, music, assemblies, etc., and so alot of us are not liking our new school atmosphere lately. So, I am saving my vacation days to go to the game on May 18th – Andre’s Bobblehead night, and a few other days that I will need to take off between now and the end of the school year. My friend has always volunteered for the Olympics when it has taken place in North America. This is the first time she is not doing it because she is worried about missing school.
I’m sorry Nelly, I’m just so used to not working that I didn’t even think of that you DO have to work. I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to be that insensitive. I’m sorry that things seem tough for you and your fellow teachers. Does your principal have something against your “baseball” teachings? I hope not. I know you and your students enjoy that immensely!
You’ve gotta tell me where you’ll be sitting for Andre’s big night (5/18). I’ll see if I can go to the game and we can say hi! But if you sit on the Loge level like you usually do (I don’t think you cared for the Inner Reserved seats for the ITD tour), it’ll make it difficult, but I’ll see what I can do. Usually at DS, a person can go up to another level, but not down to another level. But we’ll see.
I always like to watch the Olympics, and it’ll be nice that it’s in the same time zone as me (so I’m not watching in the middle of the night). But your friend usually volunteers for the Olympics when it’s in North America? What about NY? I mean, would she normally fly from CA to NY to volunteer if it was there?
Oh yea!! She has done both the summer and winter Olympics. The one she talks about most is Atlanta because she was living there at the time. She was supposed to do the Snowboarding and the Hockey this time, but she just didn’t think she could take the time off.
As far as my baseball in the classroom, she hasn’t said anything yet, but that doesn’t mean she won’t. It really is all academic…………..mostly geography now, but her thing is wasting academic time, and if she feels your academic time is being wasted, she will question why you are doing it. She has never been in the classroom when I have showed it off, but you are right…………the kids love it!! We are on team #16 (abc order), which is Milwaukee, and this year I have really made it into a full geography unit. I don’t think she will take it away, but she has changed alot of the fun stuff we used to do. Also, we don’t think she will allow us to do our 4th annual musical that we just love doing at the end of the year. We had our sights on Disney or Country this year. It’s very sad indeed!!!
BTW – no need to apologize!!! You need to go and have fun there!!! Andre (and the rest of the boys) will be glad to have you there.
Wow, that is one dedicated lady friend you have! Kudos to her! Sorry to hear about the woes going on at your school. I know you will do a great job if you have to change, but c’mon, you gotta get those kids baseball fans (if not Dodger fans!) It will be nice to get away, but I still feel bad for my miscue. But thx for your words! You always have a way of lifting me up when I need it! 🙂

ONE COMPLAIN ABOUT ROSCOE’S The waiters and waitresses were asking the fans that they needed the table. That was no cool since we all were waiting for the Dodgers to make their rounds to the tables. I saw a few that they did leave. We asked for slice of sweet potatoe pie so we could stay longer but we were ready to talk to the manager and complain there and online if they were going to ask for us to leave.

Well, only a few days till Spring Training. I can’t wait. I think our season will come down to how much Manny has left in the steroid free tank and if Kersh and Billz continue to improve and have breakout seasons. I think Kersh is on the verge of being a true ace. If I’m the Dodgers, I have him talking and working with Orel Hershiser and Sandy Koufax on a daily basis. Billz, I’m a little worried. I think Sandy can help him, but, he really needs Don Drysdale. I would seek out Tom Seaver to work with Billz. I believe we can take the NL West, beyond that, It’s going to come down to Kersh, Billz, and Manny!!!!

It seems as if, except for a few instances, that the Caravan was mostly a good experience for all. Glad everyone had a good time. Can’t wait for the season to start.

I’m pretty comfortable with our Top 3 in the rotation, but still have my doubts about Padilla and the mystery number 5 man. Our bullpen is going to be solid again this season as well.

I think Loney will continue to progress, but we gotta hope Furcal improves and Blake doesn’t start to take a downward slide. I honestly don’t know what to think about 2b because I have no idea what the heck they are doing there.

As long as Kemp and Ethier can repeat what they did last year, I can’t complain. Manny is the big unknown and it is worrisome that we are counting on a 39-year-old (is that correct) to continue to produce at a high level when we know how he got to that high level in the first place.

Martin needs to not only pick it up offensively, he needs to stop having mental lapses defensively: he did things last year that I would have jumped on high school kids for doing, let alone a big leaguer.

The bench is another big unknown and I think it is going to prove to be important this season with Manny and Blake getting up there in age.

I am hopeful for another good season, but I see a few too many question marks to make me comfortable. I guess we’ll just need to wait and see.

Being an old accountant, I like the new number system. We just need to make it easier to convey the original terminology. So for instance, I could say Ned’s a real 8-15-18-19-5-’19 1-19-19 for all the PVL’s he signed. Or shorthand that’s a real 123.

I think of it as Central Cal CP, and yes, about an hour or so from Nells. I lived up in this area for 10 years before I moved to NM – I’ve always considered it home even when I was in Cruces.
