Three more avoid arbitration
James Loney, Hong-Chih Kuo and George Sherrill have all avoided arbitration for 2010, leaving just three more guys to lock up – Andre Ethier, Jonathan Broxton and Russell Martin.
Today is the day when numbers get filed for each side, but it’s hardly the end of the process. We’re still very hopeful we can get those other three guys done soon…stay tuned.
As any of you who follow the game closely know, arbitration is a process you never want to go to with a player, so the work of Kim Ng and her staff in getting six of the nine guys done so far should be commended…and hopefully she and they will get the rest done soon!

In my earlier report today on Sheets, ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian was quoted as saying Sheets would land a one-year deal with plenty of incentives, and the club mentioned most is the Cubs, if the price and one-year deal is correct.
I believe that teams like the Brewers (Sheets’ old team where he still has plenty of friends he keeps up with), and the Rangers (who now employ Mike Maddux, his old pitching coach at Milwaukee) have a chance of landing him if they spring for a two-year deal worth the $10-12 million per year he is asking for. Looks like we’re only waiting on Ethier and Broxton and the rumor is they’re accepting.
Oldbrooklynfan – They are finished too, both with two year contracts, pending physicals.
Messagebear – it’s an average of 7.625 per year for Andre. It doubles what he made last year and then some. However, the article that Dylan wrote said they were buying out 2 of his three years of arbitration, but I believe he only has two years left until he reaches free agency. He and Russell were both Super Twos. I am glad it didn’t go longer than two. I have been listening/reading what all of you have been saying about long-term contracts with the young players, and I think Andre (and whoever is working with him) did a good job to get the happy medium with two years, and if he does well in those two years, then he will be ready for an even bigger payday, either with or without the Dodgers.

How do you guys feel about Andre’s deal, especially nelly and trublu, since you two have been following him most closely for quite a while. For my part, I think that’s a legitimate deal for his length of service, and I’d actually give a Well Done for Ng and whoever was directly involved.
With what we now have as core players locked away for 2010, I’m pretty much willing to go into the season. I’d like to get a Padilla or maybe even Sheets, if it can be done for a single year, and beyond that let’s see what our remaining youngsters can do. Longer range, I still think that the McCraps are the wrong owners, but it’ll be up to the courts to sort that out now.
Can’t wait for Spring Training to start!
I am back in PST again. I think ITD is it’s own version of the show LOST. I have no idea what time zone I am going to end up in these days.
Bear ~ I think Andre’s deal is pretty fair. More important, to me, it proves that they meant it when they said they wanted to keep the “core” together. I agree, another pitcher (not the likes of Russ Ortiz) is imperative.
See……….within a matter of 5 minutes I have been in the PST zone and the ITDFST zone.

Anyone notice on Dodger Thoughts that the projected payroll this season is $91+ mil? $15+ of that is paying players no longer with the team including Schmidt, Cow and Nomore. And we’ll be doing the same with Manny after this season.

I just read that too, Nellyjune. The Giants are kind of in a fix because Timmy just wants to do a year-at-a-time contract. The Giants want to sign him to a multi-year deal. It could cost them plenty going year-to-year so they may consider trading him. I don’t buy that, do you?
Well, Bill is saying that some are concerned about his health, his body (sick alot and doesn’t like hot weather) and his arm (overuse), and that Tim isn’t as big of a deal like he used to be. Panda is becoming more of the face of the gnats these days.
I feel the same way. I’ve always thought he was sickly. A lot of folks on ESPN think his arm motion will cause him many problems.
My guess is Timmy will get his 13 mill. If the Gnats had any sense, they’d do what Seattle did with King Felix and make it worth Timmy’s while to sign a multi-year deal. No way do they trade him. Franchise impact pitchers are too hard to come by. We should know.Very good news on signing all of our potential arbitration eligibles. With a one-year deal laden with incentives, he might be worth a shot. Piniero and Padilla are good possibilities. If the price is right, I’d even take a shot on Garland. Let’s face it, nobody left out there is going to resemble an impact starter. The best we can hope for is decent.

I’m really happy for Andre. I think it’s a fair deal and it supposedly has incentives built in, so he can potentially make even more. I was worried they were going to put him through the same crap as last year, so it’s good to see they didn’t. I can’t wait for spring training to start.

Ethier gets a $500,000 signing bonus and salaries of $5.5 million this year and $9.25 million in 2011.

Great news if you sat in the 198 seat VIP section last season. Your experience has become less expensive this year….Instead of $90…they have been reduced to $42 and $47 respectively. No sun tan lotion though….probably not a big problem seeing how you are in Arizona, good chance you have your own……No cool scented towel though, also probably not a problem since you are in Arizona and your accommodations provided you with one, good chance before the end of the day, it has that cool scent of your favorite sun tan lotion as well….. No preferred parking though, also probably not a problem since the cost of parking has been shifted to those whose ticket prices increased this spring…..and with the money you saved you can take a shuttle or peddle bike…..I would suggest the peddle bike since you are in a great mood after getting into the parking lot in a reasonable amount of time….You probably enjoy this better than the preferred parking anyway’s.

I saw that they no longer have that special section at Camelback. Believe it or not, the wet towels were a godsend during the games. It was so hot!!! The ushers kept handing us bottled water as well. When you sit hear the front, there is no shade. It is just like the Sunday day games at Dodger Stadium.
I have a feeling that the Dodgers will sign Vicente Padilla. He did well and I think that some teams are staying clear of him because of his history. He got along well with the other players. I met him at one of the games and he seemed like a nice guy. He took time to sign autographs and seemed pleased when I told him he was doing a great job. He certainly signed more than O Dog who never signed an autograph.
Everything will be okay by opening day, I’m sure.

Funny you posted that D4, as yesterday I actually had a thought of trying to go to ST.

But when I was looking at the prices and saw that for a non grass seat it was going to cost between $26 — $47 (Which doesn’t include all the service charges, printing charges, & we want more $$$ from you charge so were going to charge you more from the ticket company charge). Compared to $23 — $29 for the Angels. Also I looked at most other teams and they charge around the $23-$30 range as well.

I was thinking that I could afford to fly there. But then based on the hotel room and $70.00 for the 2 of us per game to watch the big league players play roughly 3-4 innings I got 2nd thoughts. So if we went there we would want to see as many games as possible since were flying there. I figured based on the days we were there we could see 4-5 games. $350.00. Not including all the food at the games. Throw in food for the days we are there & eating out and it started to get upwards of 2G. $350.00 games, $450.00 for airfare, $750.00 for hotel, plus car rental, plus food. That’s just for 2. That really adds up. I can’t imagine a family of 4.

I can’t justify that to the Wife for ST in Arizona. It used to be an inexpensive alternative but I guess if there is a buck to be squezzed out of the public it will be done. I just don’t have the lemons…

It is very expensive to go to ST especially if you fly. The main cost is the lodging. The average price if you stay fairly close to Camelback is about $200 a night for one. The high cost is not in the game ticket. However, it is great fun and was worth it to me.

Have seen it reported that we’ve signed Padilla to a one year contract for $4 million. I like him a lot better than Looper and Garland, which were the other considerations. We seem to have a lot of people to look at for the #5 starter, and it’s time we sorted through those options to see what might work.
If Brox would ever learn to back people off the plate, he’d be totally unhittable.
I’m OK with Padilla too Bear – much better option than Looper, and at least on a par with if not slightly better than Garland, though Garland I think would eat-up more innings.
To get anywhere though, Billz is going to have to get some nads and Kersh will have to keep developing rapidly. Going to need another starter though – I just don’t think Kuroda’s capable of going a full year without getting hurt.
I think Padilla is a good signing. Like I said before, we can use somebody that will back people off the plate.

For Spring Training games, I went with friends so we split the cost of rental car and hotel. I even had points for a free night but I did get those speeding tickets in the mail…

The Padilla signing is a good one, but yes, it will only get better if our other three (Billz, Kersh and Kuroda) BRING IT this season.
On the Spring Training tickets, etc. As far as expenses, going there as a single person, whether you are with friends or not, is completely different than going as a couple or a family of three, four and/or more. Thank you Collie and Cat for your insight into the expenses. I would just rather save the money and spend it for the real games that count, whether they are at Dodger Stadium or the Phone Booth. One day when I am retired, and no kids to get through their teenage/college life, I will be able to do both. Cat – I know how much you love going, and I look forward to reading your updates when you do go.
I hope that this year’s Spring Training, I get to meet Bob Feller. My friend Deb who is an Indian fan, took her dad there last year. Her dad shared stories when he used to watch him pitch. I met Deb in Vero Beach a few years back and everytime she and her husband come to L.A. she lets me know or when she goes to Spring Training. We ended up as partners during the last Women Baseball clinic at Vero. I love all the friends I have made because of Baseball.

Sometimes the best time at Spring Training is where there is no game and you could just chat with the guys and watch them practice. I have a friend that works for the General hospital in L.A. who said he ran into Sandy Koufax and he just chatted with him for a while. This is was back in 2004.

If you can and you can afford it, I highly recomend Spring Training. Lore and I will catch the Dodgers at the Indian facility and at the Giant facility beside the games at Camelback. It is a little easier on us since is a 5 hour drive.

Very good Kahli and Bear! It does put us in a sticky situation as to know what is acceptable and what is not.
Padilla is a good signing…..if he is, indeed, the #4 starter. But many ITD humans feel antsy about Kuroda’s health; count me in that group, as well. So if Padilla slides into the 3 hole (is that too pornographic for this site???) then the rotation is hurting. Would still like to see the Dodgers re-sign Weaver. He did everything the Dodgers asked of him last season…and he has the spheres when needed for tight situations. Billingsley should talk to Weaver about acquiring some spheres…
I think that mentioning the possibility of Padilla sliding into the #3 hole is quite permissible as long as you don’t mention Jamie in the same sentence.
