For all you baseball/theatre buffs…
The families of former Dodger catcher John Roseboro and Giants pitcher Juan Marichal are expected to be in attendance on December 5 for the performance of “Juan and John,” a one-man stage production at New York Public Theater by actor Roger Smith, who witnessed the incident on television when he was six years old. A horrified Smith burned his Marichal baseball card after the pitcher struck Roseboro over the head with a bat during the famous incident at Candlestick Park during the pennant race on August 22, 1965. The play traces the events after the game, including the eventually friendship between the two men and Marichal ultimately delivering the eulogy at Roseboro’s funeral in 2002. The play runs through December 20 and Smith hopes to bring the production to the Los Angeles area in 2010. Here is a recent interview with Smith and Playbill Magazine.

Thanks for the heads up Mark….I’ll bet Jamie would like to hit Frank with a bat, and give the eulogy at his funeral, or vise versa……
I also recall watching this game on television but I missed the actual moment Marichal hit Roseboro because I was glancing at the Sunday comics at the moment. I looked up and there was Marichal still standing with the bat in his hands and I was afraid he was going to hit Koufax. It was quite a moment in Dodger/Giant history that none of us will ever forget. The best part of the story is how Roseboro and Marichal not only made peace with one another but became close friends.
Of course, I also will never forget how I felt seeing Marichal in a Dodger uniform at the end of his career. Some things are just not right and that was certainly one of them. So it proves signing PVL’s is nothing new but that had to be one for the ages.
PLAY THE KIDS!!!!!!!!!!! I BELIEVE!!!!!!!!!!!!

BRING THE RING IN 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Justin Miller? Why oh why would you sign him? Oh yea…………he was cheap. ………… and let’s not even talk about the fact that he is a gnat, and even my family said he didn’t play much. However, at least he has played at the major league level in the last THREE years!! What is with signing Redman who has been in the minor leagues for three years and hasn’t played at the major league level since 2006. Oh yea………….because he was cheap. Stay tuned for the next episode of “Let’s Make a Cheap PVL Deal” because I am sure there are more gems just waiting to be had.
Ward Dear – I thought I was in Stage 4, but I think 3 seems more appropriate at this time, or is it possible to go between the two?
Been thinking about all this, looking at the facts. Dodger ownership is disfunctional. No money for decent PVLs, no need for middling PVLs. That means the kids…ALL of them…cheap, too. Maybe a one-step-back, two-steps-forward kind of thing. Elbert, McDonald, Stults, and Miller fight for last two starter spots. DeWitt plays every day. Repko and Xavier Paul platoon, JP traded for prospects. By the trading deadline Dodgers are in 3rd place and shed Furcal, Blake, Manny and Kuroda to playoff wannabes. Core players like Ethier, Kemp, Loney, Kershaw, Billingsley, Broxton getting better and better. Joe retires gracefully and takes Donny with him. Frank and Jamie are arrested for cross-dressing and are forced to sell team under some morals clause with MLB. Hugh Hefner buys Dodgers. Tim Wallach, coming off AAA Manager of the Year at Albuquerque, becomes manager. Dodgers World Champs in 2011.
Sounds like a great plan Kahli!!!!
With all this paperbag talk, count on Frank to take advantage of the promotional opportunity and have a “paperbag night” at the old ball park. If there was real equity in baseball, it would be Ned and Frank who should wear the paper bags when they come to Dodger Stadium.
Justin Miller and Prentice Redman are fine pick-ups.
.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Let’s review.
.
Ooh, pretty decent bully: Brox, Sherrill, Beli, Tronco, Kuo, Wade, Leach, Schlicting. Need starting pitching. Hey looky here K to BB ratio 1.33:1, 1HR every 8 innings… sign reliever Justin Miller. Check.
.
Dre, Kemp, Manny, JP, Paul, Repko. Nice OF. Hmmmm. I bet that’s the envy of most teams… Hey there! Hasn’t played in the ML since 2003. Age 30. Experience, that’s good. Dad played ball too – bet he taught his son everything he knows. Sign Prentice Redman. Check!
.
Betcha we’ll get over the hump now!!

I sense another paperbag coming on real soon.
Enchanted ~ I sense MANY paperbags!
Ernest Vincent Wright wrote a novel of 50,000 words, none of which, containing the letter E.
He sure did, Enchanted! This is not going to be a good Hot Stove for us, is it? I’m saddened by this because I think we deserve better.
Crap….I’m time warping again!
The Yankees are going shopping…..other teams are too….meanwhile we are shopping the flea markets.
The thing I find REALLY impressive about Miller is that he pitched for Chiba Lotte.
Looks that Mr. Wright had a wacky phobia of fifth symbols.
My mistake enchanted – Redman hasn’t played at the major league level since 2003………………TWO THOUSAND THREE!!!!!!!! 2006 was bad enough but adding that 3 extra years makes it so much better – LOL!!!!!! So, if you are going to do that, why not take a chance on a pitcher in the minors in our own system?
Having a good morning, aren’t we, Nellyjune?! lol
I guess my one comment was too many. I got a submission error after that one. Maybe Frank should put this PVL money towards mlb.com so they can figure how to fix this problem of time-warping and submission errors.
Anyhow…………………the comment I have been trying to post.
OMG!!!!! I just assumed Redman was a pitcher. He is a frickin’ outfielder. Like we need another frickin’ outfielder!!!! What are “they” thinking? Oh, that’s right!!! “They” don’t trust the kids. “They” have to have PVLs to feel secure. Well, “they” need to realize these PVLs SUCK!!!!!!!!!! …………….and even if they turn out that they don’t SUCK, then it’s still wasted money on a player you could have perhaps brought up from our own system. “They” obviously just don’t get it, do “they”?
I am definitely still at stage 3!!!
redpen – ………..then it’s still wasted money on a player “when” perhaps you could have “brought up a player”………………………… I guess this stage 3 screws up my grammar too 🙂
lbirken – good point as always.
Nelly, the scarier thought is “they” do get it. These minor league deals help fill rosters since there obviously is a dearth of talent down on the farm and these signings cost the team almost nothing.
THIS IS SO MUCH FUN BEING ABLE TO READ PEOPLE’S MINDS!!!! I AM ON CORRECT TIME BUT EVERYBODY IS AROUND 20 MINUTES AHEAD OF ME! THIS REALLY SUCKS!!!!1
With Figgins headed to Seattle, Angels say they need a lead-off hitter. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…………
Sounds great to me, Kahli!
Not to be argumentative, but to me its not needing to fill out minor league rosters with the Redmans of the world. Minor league OFers come a dime a dozen. Spit and you’ll hit one. I don’t think ANY ML team needs to sign a 30 year old never was that last played in the majors what will be 7 years ago come next season to a minor league contract and block another player who presumably HAS talent from moving up the chain. I’d rather have some kid straight out of highschool playing than someone like Redman. That was a totally rediculous signing of someone that has no chance of ever making the ML roster, and will only serve to keep a more deserving prospect (or even non-prospect that’s been in the organization awhile) from getting extra playing time. I mean what advice can this guy even give to the average kid that’s 21-22? Tips on how to ride the charter bus?
The Miller signing at least has some validity. Certainly no worse than signing Vargas, Milton, Estes or Ohman last year.
Hello gang!!! Hope you are all having a great weekend!!! Well, if this is a foreshadow of things to come, we’re hosed. Just play the kids!!! Your not going to find diamonds mining in a cesspool!!! LOL!!!
C’mon Ned, you should have learned by now. You go wading in a cesspool, all you will get are t*rds!!!!
A t*rd is a t*rd is a t*rd!! They all stink, some just more than others!!!! Oooh, Ooooh that smell, cant’cha smell that smell!!!
E, I don’t know any more than you do about what the Dodgers do and why they do it. We can only guess. I just can’t believe these deals are made for no reason.
Here we go kids!! Today’s episode of Ned’s Toilet Bowl!! The t*rds go round and round, most go down the drain (with the money I might add), some float till the next flush when they go down. The ITD faithful look down and sigh, Ahh crap!!! Ned sits down, grunts out a couple of more and we go round and round again. Yeah, it’s Ned’s Toilet Bowl!!! Fun for the whole family. Thoughtfully and tastefully brought to you by Enchanted Entertainment Enterprises©!!!!
For the uncut, uncensored version, please tune to the Beav and Bear dot com website. Viewer discretion is advised!!!!
Whatever organization it was that awarded the “Power Couple” title to our notorious owner couple, I wonder if they can rescind that title like they take away the Miss America crown for outrageous behavior. Maybe they want to give the McCourts a pair of toilet seats instead. If they do, I’ll personally contribute a roll of toilet paper. Maybe Josh can advise us where we all might send a roll of toilet paper – or can we just send them to Ned?
Ned the Shi*keeper!
Yes folks, it’s Ned Colletti, the prince of porcelin!!! Starring in; Ned’s Toilet Bowl™!!!!!
Like I said last night, Dodgers should take a step back in 2010 and play nothing but the kids, pray for ownership change, and then pray for Tim Wallach. I have NO PROBLEM pitching Elbert, McDonald, et al, to see what we have. Ain’t no way this team will contend in 2010 so long as Frank and Jamie bungle their through a contested divorce.
As for Jamie (and Frank):
“Go away little girl.
Go away little girl.
It’s hurting me more each minute
That you delay…”
If you buy stray dogs, you get fleas. In that light, here’s a little ditty based on a TV show starring a young Clint Eastwood:
Rollin, rollin, rollin
Rollin, rollin, rollin
Rollin, rollin, rollin,

Keep movin, movin, movin
Though they’re PVL losers
Keep them doggies movin,

Don’t try to understand em.
Just sign, seal, and deliver em.
Soon we’ll be left high and dry.
Buy em up, head em up
Head em up, move em on

The limited edition Jeff Kent snakes(for those PVL’s that just will not go away) have sold out!!! Rumor has it the deluxe Juan Pierre snake will soon be available.
LMAO Bear!!!!
And you thought the dog drinking out of the toilet bowl was not good!!!
Hi Josh and ITD,
I will definitely have to check, “Juan & John” at the New York Public Theater and see if it is still playing and purchase a ticket if it is.
I’ll let everyone know how I made out.
At least they only drink when it is clear. They won’t go near it when it is filled with crap!!! C’mon Ned, take a lesson from our canine friends!!!
LMAO Sky!!! Rawhide!!! Head’em up, move’em out!!! That’s what needs to happen to Frank, Jamie, and Ned!!!
I quite agree with Kahli. I have no problem not making the playoffs in 2010 if we have a plan in place to succeed beyond next year. But, unfortunately, “Plan” is not in the McCourt’s vocabulary just as “Impact” and “Quality”isn’t. Personally, I couldn’t care less about the McCourt’s personal behavior or expenditures as long as they put forth a good faith effort at putting the best team possible on the field. Clearly, they fail that test…T. Boone Pickens for Dodger owner. He’s spending mega bucks on developing hydrogen as an energy source and building cars with my brother-in-law. Surely, he has a billion left over to buy and invest in the D’s.
LOL Sky!! Good post. I think alot of plans, both ours and theirs went out the window with Jamie’s transgressions. New word for fooling around, courtesy of Tiger Woods!!!
I’m not sure if anyone seen this but no big surprise here.

Hey kids, where can we find a worthless has been to give money to today?
Hey Kid’s!!! Let’s waste our money on worthless has beens/never weres’, when we could save the the collective money and offer it to a truely useful player!!! Or, perhaps, put it into player developement!!!! Just some bathroom thoughts!!!
Hey Kid’s, what time is it: It’s Neddy-Doody Time!!!!
All courtesy of Enchanted Entertainment Enteprises™!!!
That’s the sad thing Birk – Ned probably believes he HAS a plan. I just for the life of me can’t figure out why you’d even sign someone like that to a contract of any kind. I know all teams do it to some degree, but dammit that isn’t even a small market move. That’s a Peoria or a Chattanooga move IF the ML sponsor team can’t fill the roster with enough prospects. That’s something I might expect from an independent league team so they can claim they have an ex-major leaguer on their roster.
I am depressed.
Love, NEDDY-DOODY TIME, Jhall !!!!!
Great article link, shad. Predictably, 3 of the 10 worst deals of the last decade are Dodger deals. Kevin Malone, who signed Dreifort, is now selling cars. Probably used Yugos.
Come to think of it, “used Yugo” is an oxymoron.
enchanted, don’t be depressed. Think of it as a time when the Dodgers will play every last kid they have, with the exuberance of youth and the athleticism that goes with it. No more high-priced crappy PVLs…no more crummy Ned trades…and if we’re lucky and Joe rolls his eyes in sadness, no more Joe after 2010…and hopefully, no more Donny baseball or any other stinking shred of East Coast baseball, Jamie and Frank, the soon-to-be-paupers, included. This is the Los Angeles Dodgers, the franchise that Alston, Tommy, Sweet Lou, Sandy, Big-D, Fernando, Penguin, Gibby and Bull Dog built. Blue Heaven on Earth. On second thought, enchanted, it’s enough to make one depressed…….
The Brooklyn Dodgers (who later became the Los Angeles Dodgers) did not get their name for their sporting ability. The term dodger was shortened from trolly dodgers, which was used to describe Brooklynites for their ability to avoid being hit by trolly cars.
However, now the term “Dodgers” applies to the player draft and the front office being known as “Draft Dodgers” due to their refusal to offer Type A free agents arbitration, thus avoiding any compensatory draft picks.
It was also announced this morning that the team is now set for a move to Canada.
LMAO, Enchanted……I knew you would finish the thought!!! Thanks for not disappointing!!!
🙂
We are the Paperbag Brigade!!! United we stand!
Sorry, Enchanted, I time warped you again!
ITD bloggers are now known as conscientious objectors.
Are we at the point yet where the paper bag brigade will outnumber the bobblehead gang? As I’ve said before, Frank should seriously look at holding a “paper bag night” at the stadium instead of the bobblehead promotions. Besides, paper bags are a lot less expensive than bobbleheads – it’s kind of like useless PVL’s instead of some promising prospects you have to pay some real money to acquire.
Good Morning ITD readers and writers!!!! I see we had our usual colorful discussions yesterday. You never disappoint. I was reading yesterday while freezing my asss off at my son’s baseball tournament. They are doing well, but there is a reason the mlb takes the winter off. I think it should be baseball across the board. I don’t think it’s quite fair to rely on the pitcher to pitch or the catcher and the rest of the fielders to catch if they can’t feel their fingers. Then there is batting, and no amount of padding in those batting gloves is going to take the sting out of metal hitting a fast ball in 30-40 degree temperatures. However, having said that, these are the elite boys in the sport and most of them have the dream of playing for their favorite college or, if the opportunity arises, the MLB some day. So, if they don’t mind, then I guess I shouldn’t either.
I’d sure like to see the Roseboro/Marichal play at some point.
I watched that one on TV, and got pretty wound up over that one. Wow. Makes you wonder what would have happened if Drysdale had been pitching that game. Probably nothing good would have come out of it. Least of all for Marichal.

(Blame It On The Balls Of Dough)
.
The middle of December, the winter meetings Ned will go
He?s taking along JP,
Hoping a Christmas miracle is bestowed
.
Ran into another GM, who asked what?s on my mind
He said Franks spent to much already
Between his lawyers and his wife
He’s called all the nursing homes, cheap arms that are all sore
Now, I?m headed to the bone yard
Cause, he’s searched there before
.
Blame it on the balls of dough
Cause, Jamie said ” Franks were way to low”
There?s claims he was a leveraged man
I guess the weight has taken it?s toll
Now Neds, Halliday plans are long gone
East coast for sure they?ll go
Huevos Ranchero, and Camelback Ho
Blame it on the balls of dough
.
He spoke up and Franks reaction was, Neddy don?t you see
There?s no more money and Conte
the medicine man is all you need
So go ahead, peddle your snake oil, at the Glendale spread
Were sure to find a winner, whose arm hasn?t been bleed
So go forth, make a trade, bring backend rotation to me
Take my little pizzle, and make a deal, maybe they?ll like the speed
.
Blame it on the balls of dough
Cause, Jamie said “Franks were way to low”
There?s claim?s he was a leveraged man
I guess the weight has taken it?s toll
Now Neds, Halliday plans are long gone
East coast for sure they?ll go
Huevos Ranchero and Camelback Ho
Blame it on those balls of dough
If you ask me, the fans shouldn’t be the ones wearing the paper bags.
And now, a reminder of the halcyon days…
While checking out Hulu last night, I saw they added The Greatest American Hero to their TV list. I hovered over it just to see what it said about the show, and it mentioned Don Drysdale.
Searched Drysdale’s wikipedia page, and found the episode title: The Two-Hundred Mile an Hour Fastball. Don plays the play-by-play announcer (and I imagined was silenced by the producers when he tried to tell them a home run to right center field at Dodger Stadium can’t go into an “upper deck”). The episode is plenty funny itself. David Hinkley is signed to the California Stars in order to find out who is responsible for three star players found beaten up within a week with the pennant 2 wins away.
If you have 48 minutes to kill, I’m sure there’d be plenty of parallels in this episode that can be drawn to the current deplorable state of our cold stove season.

Thanks Tru……HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!
.
North, I remember that episode…… 🙂
.
Seesky……..Excellent spin there on the Rawhide…:-)
Thanks, Dodger4life 🙂
Drysdale was on the Donna Reed show, too.
I, too, would like to see the play “John and Juan” but, sadly, it will probably not make it out of NY, let alone the Far West. I didn’t see the game in which it took place but I remember hearing about it at the time. No nationwide cable broadcasts in those days.Bob Costas, on his MLBTV program “Studio 42”, did an excellent show on the incident so I’m familiar with the rest of the story….. I do remember seeing Don Drysdale on the Donna Reed Show. As I remember, he was helping Jeff Stone with his pitching….thanks, d4life. Unfortunately, it looks like another cattle call in Glendale this spring training. It’s getting to be an annual event . Sort of like the swallows returning to Capistrano…If any of you have been perusing the MLB homepage these days, there’s lots of activity going on. Seattle, in particular, is being aggressive. They, apparently, are about to sign Figgins and are, reportedly, actively pursuing Bay and Lackey. The Red Sox have signed Scutaro. And what is our management doing? Being patient. If Ned’s being patient, he’ll have lots of time to check out the tourist attractions in Indy. I’m sure there is a good tour and museum at the Brickyard. Sell the team, Frank, if you don’t have the cajones and the pesos to get us to the next level.
Great songs seesky and Dodger4life!!!

Los Angeles Dodgers getting rid of ace reliever George Sherrill?
By Mark J. Miller
Bringing reliever George Sherrill(notes) from the Baltimore Orioles via trade last season was one of the things that really helped the Los Angeles Dodgers get over the hump and back into the National League Championship Series against the eventual National League champions, the Philadelphia Phillies. Now the word from FOXSports is that the Dodgers have Sherrill up on the trading block.
MSNBC claims that this is a sign that the Dodgers don’t have any money since the team is skittish about giving Sherrill a lot of dough through arbitration. He’s probably going to get a salary worth more than $4 million next year. The Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays are likely very interested in snagging a guy who is under team control through 2011 and has saved 52 games over the past two seasons with a 3.02 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 122.1 innings. The Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers might get into the talks as well.
FOXSports is saying that plenty of teams have come to the Dodgers to ask about relievers Ronald Belisario(notes), Hong Chih-Kuo, and Ramon Troncoso(notes) but the team always turns the talk to Sherrill. L.A. apparently would like a starting pitcher in return for Sherrill.
Pierre/Sherrill for Jackson. I like hahahaha.
No money to spend = nothing worthwhile.
