This is tune up time for the playoffs. Lincecum is the type of pitcher we will face most everyday in the post season. I was just getting ready to post that we need Wolfy to get thru the first couple of innings unscathed. He seems to have problems in the 1st and 2nd, and then settles in. As I was typing, Boom!! A week or so ago, I saw a comment by Hudson saying he would not be back next year, and this was before Belliard got quite so many starts at second. As I said before, I have no idea if he was kidding, dead serious or what. Has anyone seen anything?

Cannot complain about Belliard playing – he’s got the hot hand at least for now. However, let’s not forget how many games Hudson has saved us with his D, and his hitting has not been bad overall. I would love to have him back, but I don’t expect Frank to pay any big contracts. That also does not bode well for keeping our dynamic duo much longer.

knouffbrock, you raise an interesting point about the Dodgers going after certain high priced free agents. However, the fact they have not landed any of these players does raise the question of how serious the organization was about paying the price. We will see what happens but I am more concerned about what happens this season.

The Dodgers have made strong bids to land players ( Soriano, Aramis Ramiriz ) that have put up similar numbers, and now we already have a couple of them. Gonna have to pay up or there will be some seriously PO’d, and I mean seriously PO’d fans.

truebluewill – I was in my car so I was listening on the radio before going into the store. They were talking about how well Lincecum was pitching and that Tim had only given up 9 homeruns all season and none had come from a Dodger. It was like Andre was listening to them because as soon as I walked into the store, Andre came up and sent a shot over the centerfield wall. When I got back in the car, they were deflated, and they are pretty quiet now as I am watching them on telelvision.

I am with Dodger4life on the Pandamonium sign behind home plate. That phrase is plastered all over AT&T Park and on bay area tv and radio for Pablo, and it’s very annoying if you are a Dodger fan. So, maybe whoever is in charge of advertising behind home plate needs to be careful about not advertising things that make you think of the visiting team. However, with a game like this, it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to eat Panda Express while thinking the Dodgers just sent them packing on a flight to Arizona with a very slim, slim chance of making the playoffs.

Tru, I haven’t had any Panda Express food lately. I am down 38 pounds since you saw me at the ITD tour in June.
I have had the game on as a background while I do other things on my computer. It looks like the Dodger hitting is coming back. I hope we can keep up the momentum and finish ahead of the Cards for home field advantage.
I have been playing detective during the game. Someone hacked into my mother’s cousin’s Yahoo account and sent messages to everybody in her address book saying she was in England for a “program” and had all her money stolen. She was begging people to send her 1200 pounds via a MoneyGram to an address in Manchester.
When I saw the email, I could immediately spot it as a fraud. My mother’s cousin is an educated woman and there is no way she would write something in such poor English with misspellings and grammatical errors.
My mother initially believed the story and wrote back.
I called the Manchester police and they verified the address where the money was requested to be sent did not exist.
I am puzzled why someone would go to all that trouble to request money be sent to a non-existent address.

truebluewill – I am not sure how they are doing. They are at the baseball academy. All I know is my hubby owes Dodger4life ice cream. And, no, they won’t want the Dodgers to do well in the playoffs. In that respect, they are definitely Gnat fans.
*frustrated….I think that they were referring to the fact that Ned didn’t get us an ace so to speak….Randy Wolf has been spectacular this season, and I look for more of the same in the post season. Billingsley is human and young, This is just a hunch but maybe, just maybe he was a little shy in telling them about his hamstring and they changed mechanics. Only to later find out that it wasn’t the mechanics to begin with but a bothered hamstring. Now reverting back to the mechanics to straighten it all out. Chad has been to good in the past to just suddenly go bad…they will work through this .

Boy, to see that 16 again brings back memories of February. It’s amazing what 7 months can do. That 16 represented Andre just getting through arbitration without any hassles. Now, it means without hassles and a big, well deserved paycheck.

My Nellygirl! Ya know, every time I see Andre on TV, the first 2 people I think of are you and my mom. Both of you are BIG TIME ETHIERAHOLICS!!! No doubt does seeing D4’s 16 does it bring back memories. But I’ve been saying to myself all year long. The Dodgers better lock up Andre and Matty with long term contracts!!!
As far as I’m concerned, I’m doing fine. Yes, there are some changes going on in my life, as it relates to me and working. No, I don’t have a job; not in the traditional sense. But last Saturday, I went to a seminar in Oxnard about (and don’t roll your eyes) about becoming a certified full-charge bookkeeper. Well, it’s a DVD “class” that I’m taking and probably inside of a month, I’ll be done with it and will be certified to either (1) work for a company as a certified full-charge bookkeeper, or (2) get my own clients where I have my own home-based business where I “do” the books for a small business, or both. I plan to “start” my class tomorrow. I’ll let you know how it’s going.
That sounds fantastic CP!!! Nowadays, on-line courses are the way to go. Why not? About 4 years ago, I had to get certified so I can teach kids with second language needs. Well, I took three on-line course from the Univ. of Laverne. I wish you the best in whatever you decide to do once you are finished.
And yes, we need to get Andre and Matt locked up with long-term contracts. These two have been simply remarkable this season, and I am sure there is more to come from this Dynamic Duo.
What I meant to say is the on-line course included a DVD as well. I forgot to mention that part in my post.
Thx Nelly. Yes, it’s still a little scary – ya know, the fear of the unknown, but the last time I had an “odd” feeling in this manner was my decision to join Great Expectations. If you don’t know, Great Expectations was a dating service that I joined in 1994, and in 1995, I met my husband Jim. Well, that was a lot of $ and I feel just as nervous now making this decision (all by myself – no help from my husband) as I did making that decision to join Great Expectations. I’m hoping that I eventually feel as great about this decision as I did before. I think I will.
And yes, Andre and Matt have been remarkable this season. I see it every time one does something great and the other is there with a huge grin on his face! You can tell that they are best friends! Well, I think they are best friends!

Yep!! I agree…. Timmy didn’t have his stuff today, that might just be a reflection of how good…. our line up can be when running on all cylinders. “My man Belliard came in, they made a great trade to get him in here and he’s doing a great job at second base,” Hudson said. “All I can do is cheer for him.”

I understand the sentiment to want to lock up Ethier, Kemp etc to long-term contracts. I can see as that would also appeal to the Dodgers to do so. As a Dodger fan, I’d love to make sure they don’t leave. However, I don’t really think it’s in the player’s best interests to sell out their arbitration years right now.
I really don’t see McCourt “rewarding” anyone. If he offers, I’d have to take a real hard look at it and see who would benefit the most long-term. It’s probably not the player.
You all saw what the economy did to free agents last winter. If I were them, I’d go ahead and ride out my arbitration years. By the time they’re through with them, (hopefully) the economy will be in recovery and those really big long-term deals will return.

No…. I am not saying that Andre should’nt do what is in his best interest, or that he is in anyway being greedy….I am just stating my desire to see some normalcy in the game and the ability to watch players remain with their beloved ballclubs.
I hope Andre piles it on the rest of the season and in the playoffs, and then goes for $15 mil. in the upcoming arbitration. I know we need pitching for next season. But we all saw what happened with ol’ Milton Bradley over in Chi-town. And Vincente Padilla has something to prove, hopefully we’ll benefit from that.
But we don’t need Zambrano’s prima donna diva act here in L.A., we’ve got enough of that as it is. And as much as some dislike Torre’s judgment calls, we don’t want to give the guy a heart attack in his last year before retirement.
Save the Dodgers Clubhouse, let Zambrano be Boston’s problem! Within weeks of next season’s start, they’ll be nostalgic for the days when they had Manny Ramirez to kick around. At least Manny raked HR’s and RBI’s for them… Zambrano might be a HUGE price to pay for results every 5 games… he might end up a Giant by season’s end… which would be a year or two too soon for the Giants’ usual MO in polishing dustbin PVLs.
Eric does know what he is talking about. Players have so many years of service time before they become eligible for arbitration (a horribly negative process that both players and organizations work to avoid), and then become eligible for free agency some time after that. I don’t have all the details. But the system in use today is a far cry from the time before free agency when players were pretty much the property of the club that signed that player and had little choice in their own future. Some would say that era was better because it made players more competitive but clearly major league baseball took advantage of this situation. I still chuckle at the story of Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale holding out in 1965 or 1966. When they finally settled Drysdale got $100,000 and Koufax got $125,000. Those two players were pretty much the cornerstone of the franchise at that time but other than that they had no real bargaining power.
The pendulum swung the other way with free agency and arbitration, both hard fought victories for the players. Then came the player agents. We think many professional athletes are overpaid but no one forces the owners to agree to such outlandish amounts. But the reality is that players are paid for what they did in the past. They are working towards the big payday. Are they greedy for wanting more? Are the owners stingy for wanting to pay less? You be the judge.
So that is why is may not be in the best interest of the player to give up arbitration or free agency rights or in the club’s best interest to lock up players for long contracts. I think the Dodgers have already demonstrated an unwillingness to negotiate long term contracts and may in fact be willing to pay a bit more per year but for a shorter duration. Remember when many of you were calling for the Dodgers to lock up Russell Martin to a long term deal? Would that have been good for either side? Remember Adrian Beltre, who had a breakout year prior to being eligible for free agency? It sure looks like the Dodgers made the right business decision not to resign him to the deal he (meaning the agent) wanted, although I do think it could be argued that even with his less than spectacular production since leaving the Dodgers, that production was better than most of the replacements at third base.
As I have said before, enjoy the players now because there is a good chance the team will not be able to keep them all. There is no such thing as loyalty no matter what anyone says. I do think the shorter contracts still can provide a generous income to the player but still give that player the incentive to improve and keep producing. However, I also understand the player’s desire to provide for his financial future. It is definitely a part of the game I don’t like.

lbirken, FYI – simply put, a player is eligible for arbitration after being on a big league roster for 3 years (the exception being if he’s in the top 17 % of players who are between 2 and 3 years. Then he’s a Super 2 and eligible.) Once he’s been on a roster for 6 years, he’s eligible for Free Agency. I’m going to gamble with this one and not look it up. I’ll check back later tonight to see how many errors I’ve made. LOL!!!

We are on track to win 97 but I would like to see them bear down against Washington, Pittsburgh and San Diego and win 10 of the last 12 to achieve a 100 win season. Doesn’t really matter but it would look good in the history books.
It would behoove the Dodgers to return to Blue Heaven after next week with no less than a four-game lead, thus making the Colorado series moot. They begin today five up. Both teams play the Pods, but while the Rockies get the Cards and Brewers, Torre’s crew gets the Nats and Pirates.
