Top 10 Dodger homers
As many of you may have seen, Bill Plaschke weighed in this morning on this Top 10 homers in L.A. Dodger history and it made me think, I wonder what all of you think. We asked team historian Mark Langill to kick it off with his thoughts, so check it out below.
This is his personal “Top 10” Los Angeles list favoring home runs which occurred either during the postseason, affected a pennant race or set a record. According to him, time will determine where the Manny Ramirez Bobblehead Night Slam ranks in the memory of Dodger fans.
1. Kirk Gibson – 1988 World Series Game 1
2. Rick Monday – 1981 NLCS Game 5
3. Mike Scioscia – 1988 NLCS Game 4
4. Lou Johnson – 1965 World Series Game 7
5. Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager – back-to-back HRs in 1981 World Series Game 5
6. Steve Finley – 2004 NL West Division clinching grand slam
7. Four consecutive HRs in 9th and Nomar Garciaparra’s game-winning HR in 10th vs. Padres, 2006
8. Dusty Baker joins 30-Home Run Quartet in final at-bat of 1977 regular season against Houston’s J.R. Richard.
9. Joe Ferguson and Ron Cey hit game-winning HRs during 1980 weekend sweep of Houston to force one-game playoff.
10. Shawn Green – 4 HRs in one game at Milwaukee, 2002
Honorable Mention (random order): Mike Piazza’s 2 HRs last day of 1993 eliminates Giants; Pedro Guerrero’s walk-off HR gives rookie Fernando Valenzuela 8-0 record, 5/14/81 (Valenzuela still only player since 1945 to win his first eight ML starts); Wally Moon’s walk-off HR caps Sandy Koufax 18-strikeout performance at Coliseum, 8/31/59; rookie Dick Nen’s HR in 1963 pennant race at St. Louis; Steve Garvey’s walk-off HR gives Burt Hooton club-record 12th consecutive victory, 1975; Guerrero ties ML record with 15th HR in June 1985; Jimmy Wynn’s grand slam vs. Reds, 9/15/74; Piazza becomes only Dodger to hit HR out of Dodger Stadium, 1997; Frank Howard, 1963 World Series Game 4; James Loney grand slam at Wrigley Field, 2008 NLDS.
And Steve Lyons penned this entry after watching the game Wednesday night.
UPDATE: lineup…
Furcal, SS
Hudson, 2B
Manny, LF
Ethier, RF

Loney, 1B

Kemp, CF
Kershaw, P
Bill Plaschke is an idiot and should be banned from Dodger Stadium.
This list brings back a lot of fond memories. I’m with you aeversw, Plashke is an idiot. It’s as though he isn’t even a fan of L.A. teams.
Now who can argue with that?
Dodgereric ~ I can think of ONE!
If Plaschke’s mind numbing drivel doesn’t piss you off this will…from his twitter feed “Longtime fans hate reading it, but I have to say it — Dodger Stadium needs to be gutted and redone. Same beautiful spot, better new stadium”…He should never be allowed to step foot in Dodger Stadium again.
It goes without saying that Mark’s is the more intelligent list. I’d have to put Piazza’s Giant-killer in there at #7, right after Finley’s slam and move Dusty’s 30th into the honorable mention. Anything that hurts the Giants…….. 🙂
I really like Mark’s list better, and did anyone mention on here that Plaschke is an idiot and he shoudln’t be allowed to walk into Dodger Stadium ever again. I thought so…….
Josh, can you revoke Plaschke’s press pass?
from the previous thread……….
Dodgereric – You are most welcome, and I learned it from the best.
I agree with historian Mark; only time will tell. This applies to all of the homers hit in this millennium.
.
For me — and it no doubt depends on one’s age among other things — well … obviously I think it’s incredibly unlikely that anything will ever beat the Gibson homer. There are maybe three or four home runs in history that even compare.
.
After that, Monday on a Monday in Montreal is a ridiculously easy second.
.
I’m not old enough to remember, but I would think that Lou Johnson’s 1965 Game 7 homer would be an easy third if there had been the kind of media coverage then that there is now.
.
Of course Finley’s slam on my wife’s 40th birthday probably caused a couple of neighborhood kids who were helping me with party set-up to think I was a complete lunatic.
.
And anybody who is caught leaving a game early no matter how far we are behind who is not in the company of either a very old or very young person should be forced to watch the 4+1 game before they are allowed to leave, come up with a DAMN good excuse, or be stripped of their Dodgers attire.
.
And of course, each of us has our own memories. I can’t give the date, but I remember Lee Lacy hitting a 3-run pinch-hit homer sometime in the ’70s that I got pretty excited about. (And through the magic of baseball-reference.com I can tell you that the Lacy homer was on July 27, 1977. The Phillies’ Tug McGraw was protecting a 5-4 Philly lead. With two outs in the 8th inning Steve Garvey singled and Manny Mota, pinch-hitting himself, followed with a walk when Tommy Lasorda called on Lacy to pinch-hit for catcher Johnny Oates. Lacy drove it out, I went wild (I was always a big Lacy fan), and the Dodgers went on to win the game.
.
Of course, memories are tricky things. I distinctly remember that I was sitting in the right field reserve level with my Grandpa that day. But that is impossible since he passed away two years earlier. Also, for the longest time I beleived he passed away listening to Vin Scully, but that’s impossible too since he died in December. Maybe he was listening to Chick Hearn.
Shad – How are you doing today?
By nellyjune on July 24, 2009 12:25 PM
Sorry Nelly I was a little bit busy watching TV but I’m fine and hopefully Kershaw would get another win and the Giants lost to Colorado but I don’t want to see Cain get beat.
P.S. I miss my grandparents. My grandma outlived my grandpa by almost three decades and continued to go to the occasional Dodgers game well into her 80s.
.
This I guess is why I can be a steroids hypocrite. This is why baseball is better than any other sport. It binds families.
lny4loney,
Maybe your grandpa was watching a replay. I know I have always taped a few games to help get thru winter.
.
So so many great memories are triggered looking at the list. I guess today is the day of remembering. Today as I result of a comment Julia of Julia’s rant made in blog, I was remembering a very passionate Dodger fan living in Thailand that used to post in the Dodger game threads.
.
This does not have to be ranked but I remember a homerun by Joe Furgesson where he was being intentionally walked only for him to reach out and hit a homerun. it was not the famous 1980 weekend because I was at the stadium. this one I was listening and picturing the whole thing.

For the most part these last few day’s have been a pleasure to read.
.
There are many new and friendly names on the board.
.
Eric I thought your song was wonderful once again, and you know that like a team this blog has your back.
.
As far as the Home- Runs, I like reading Marks articles better than Plaschke’s anyway’s and today is no different…Thank’s again Mark and Josh!!!
.
Mickey Hatchers 2 home runs in the 88 season, coming in game 1 and game 5 of that magical year also stick out in my mind.
.
Fish Fry Tonight!!! Go Get Em Dodgers!!!!
BRING THE RING TO L.A. IN 2009!!!!
KEEP ON TRUCKING!!!!!

Enjoy the game tonight everyone,
Emma,
.
Nice thougt. But no. He died in 1975 and I can assure you he never knew what a VHS is. And he didn’t tape record games either.
.
But as long as I’m thinking about my grandparents and technology, here’s a grandma story:
.
Although she lived through the Wright Brothers first flight, well beyond the moon landing and into the age of laptop computers and cell phones, the thing that most amazed her was the fax machine. She once wondered in all seriousness if it would work in French.
Correction or clarification…..Mickey Hatchers home runs came in games 1 and 5 of the 88 World Series.
Thanks to everyone who posted comments yesterday/today on the previous thread and especially to Iny4loney for challenging every one of us to remember something very important. We are all baseball fans but many of us are Dodger fans first. It might not be healthy and it certainly is not rational but most of us just cannot help ourselves. Yes, it is a big business and there is a huge profit motive for those who run the game and for those who play the game. The game off the field is not pure but on the field there is nothing purer. The players come and go but the tradition of the team continues. That is why I have said it before and I say it again now: I root for the name of the front of the jersey, not on the back. I want the players to do well and there is nothing wrong with having a favorite player. But soon that player will be gone either playing for another team or out of the game. He will be remembered but the fact he no longer wears the Dodger uniform will change nothing as far as my support for the team.
Gotta Love Mickey Hatcher 🙂
Dodger4life,
.
Hatcher was so much fun. He ran out those homers like they might take them away from him.
Not stalking eric. I’m honored that you would quote me.
Nobody asked me, but my best HR memories of a game that I attended? MLK, I hope you don’t think I’m stalking you, but I need to quote you again. 🙂
From two different posts:
“And of course, each of us has our own memories.”
“This is why baseball is better than any other sport. It binds families.” Exactly.
One won’t really count because it wasn’t a Dodger, but I was there for Willie Stargell’s 2nd HR that left the park. May 8, 1973. (I used the magic of Wikipedia) I remember Willie Crawford in RF, feet as if they were anchored, just watching it sail over his head, hit the corregated roof on top of the right field bleachers, and bounce into the parking lot. I was sitting in the Reserved deck, behind the Dodger dugout, right in line with his shot. My mom was sitting next to me. She’s still with us, never missing a Dodger game on TV. Don’t even think about calling her on the phone during a game.
June 11, 1972. (For this one I used the magic of baseball-reference.com.) I was at a game when another Willie (Davis) hit an inside-the-park home run. As I remember it, he hit it inside-out into left field. It hit the corner and bounced away from the left fielder and he steamed all the way around the bases. A little while later, Manny Mota did the exact same thing the other way, into right field. Two inside-the-parkers in one game! I don’t know if that’s a record, but I’ll be surprised to know that it’s been done since. My mom was next to me for that one, too. In the Reserved deck, her favorite spot.
My first major league game was Saturday, July 30th, 1960 at the LA Coliseum. I know that because I have the box score right here in my cubicle at work. Tommy Davis hit a grand slam in the seventh to tie the score. We lost in 11 innings to the Milwaukee Braves. Sandy Koufax started it, but only went 4. Larry Sherry took the loss. Not understanding the rules yet, I was upset that the Dodgers didn’t get another at-bat. I still have the pennant from that game. There’s a picture of Dodger Stadium on it with the words, “Future Home of the Los Angeles Dodgers” underneath it. Of course, it also says, “Los Angeles Dodgers – World Champions”. I was 7 years old and sitting way up high behind the Chinese Wall. My dad was sitting to my left, trying to teach me about baseball. I lost him 5 years ago this November. I fell in love with the game and the Dodgers that night. Not particularly in that order.
I was there for two of the four homeruns that have ever left Dodger Stadium, those of Mike Piazza and Mark McGwire.
.
But a towering shot by Matt Kemp a couple of years ago stands out much more clearly to me. I just stood there with my mouth agape as the ball flew high into the night and was caught just shy of the back-of-the bullpen wall by Saito.

I know but this is crazy. Holliday is in the lineup tonight.
lny4loney – I react like a lunatic every time our Dodgers hit a homerun or walk off now, especially when number 16 hits one.
I know they won’t make any top 10 list because they weren’t event changing, but Andre’s had a few walk-offs this year that were pretty spectacular and by judging from the team’s reaction, you would have thought they had one the World Series.
Great lineup!!!
GO DODGERS!!!!!
I wish we had a lineup with Manny Ethier and Kemp
One of the most memorable home runs I can recall for games I attended is the one Wally Moon hit in that August game in 1959 when Koufax struck out 18. Without that home run Koufax would have lost that game. I also recall a home run hit by Duke Snider on a day he was honored. I also was there the night Piazza hit one out of the stadium although at the time I don’t think a lot of fans realized what happened. For some reason I also remember one night Darren Dreifort hitting two home runs, both to center field and both of them line drives.
Does anyone remember Chuck Essigian hitting two pinch hit home runs for the Dodgers in the 1959 World Series?
Anyone know the number Holliday wear now since Pujols has his #5?
Stolen from the Dodger Thoughts blog comments. This was the first one I thought of after seeing Plaschke’s list as well. I see it is not on Mark Langill’s list either.

Dusty Baker’s grand slam in game 2 of the 1977 playoffs against the Phillies was pretty huge. Yes, it was only the fourth inning, but it broke a 1-1 tie after Philadelphia had already won the first game at Dodger Stadium. I remember watching on TV and bumping my hands on ceiling when I lept out of my chair, then thinking how lucky my father was that a business associate had taken him to the game.

The Dodgers would win out the series, with Dusty adding a two-run HR off Steve Carlton to start the scoring in game four, cinching his NLCS MVP award and giving LA a lead they would not reliquish as Tommy John threw a complete game in the rain.

I can testify to Nelly’s excitement as I have seen her when Andre hits a home run. She jumps straight up out of her chair about a foot high if not more… clapping and cheering….YEAH ANDRE!!!! It put a smile on my face and laughter in the air 🙂
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5940
Wow espn are fast they have Holliday in a Cards hat.
Look like he got a hit lol
Shad, I bet ESPN could put a Dodger hat on you in time for tonight’s game.
Oh…………My…………….Goodness!!! It is so good to see you OldFogey/porklinks!!! Thank you for sharing with us.
lbirken – wonderful to see you as always.
dodgereric – another brilliant post 🙂
dodger4life – thanks for the verification!! However, I think the best story about excitement is dcollins’ wifey hitting her head on their chandelier because she was so excited about something Andre did (the memory slips me). She had to be taken to the emergency room. Don’t worry….. I don’t have any chandeliers hanging in my house.
To bad yahoo can’t even do it with Hudson yet lol
Nelly, no matter if I am watching Dodger baseball or UCLA basketball or football, my wife sometimes has to remind me it us just a game. I always tell her I know, I know.
lbirken ~ it’s never just a game, is it? lol
As far as homeruns go, I love all of Andre’s “walk off’s” this year……..to me it shows that they really are men playing a kids game. The jubilation at home plate is truly amazing!
I know……….it’s embarrassing at times, but it’s the Dodgers, what can I say. I do get pretty excited during Redskins games, and I do have my moments when Denny Hamlin is driving well in whatever NASCAR race he is in, but nothing compares to how I react when a Dodger does something spectacular.
………and even then we are saying “Wow” for other 5 months during the off-season because of all the hot-stove topics and Spring Training. Baseball truly is a year round sport, which continually makes history on and off the field.
No doubt other sports can make you say “WOW!”. But only baseball does it almost every day for seven months.
Sorry lny4loney – I time warped you.
Iny4loney, you hit it dead on. Other than bowling, does any major spectator sport have a stat for a “perfect game”? And what other sport can match the scratching and spitting? Have you ever seen a football or basketball player pile a wad of bubble gum on a teammate’s head? Baseball certainly is special.
Wow yahoo is on crack.

I noticed that Dodgers.com hasn’t posted this news so I thought I would share it with you.
Andre Ethier made a visit to the Union Rescue Mission today. He cooked hot dogs and served food to the homeless. Check it out. Thanks…
http://tinyurl.com/l2a2ld
Peace!
Nice of you to share that one.
Thank-you so much, Roberto!
Hey nelly…. I’m sure Dodgers.com will provide a article and video soon. I saw a Dodgers.com person recording the event.
Thanks for reading everyone 🙂
You know, Roberto, the people on the homepage need to see that. They were upset Andre wasn’t at the bowling tournament. Well, they need to realize all the other things he is involved in and maybe they won’t be so hard on him next time. Thanks for the link 🙂
How did that happened? I answered your question before you asked me. Must be a bug on this blog… scary lol 🙂
Roberto – nevermind – somebody already mentioned all the things Andre does do throughout the community. They didn’t mention what he did today, but they got their point across.
Roberto – we have what we call, time warps, every once in a while. Some of us have gotten used to it enough that we can actually have fun with it now. Other times, it is just a pain in the behind. Thanks for the information, and you are welcome 🙂
Hello everyone,
That list sure brings back great memories, they were all great moments, but I think Manny’s belongs in a category of it’s own.
The line up tonight, if I got it right, brings us 77HRs and 370 RBI
After looking at the pictures of me taken by Dodgereric, I decided it is time to get serious and lose weight.
Thanks to the publicity from the Manny incident, and “The Weight Loss Cure ‘They’ Don’t Want You to Know About”, I am starting the Dr. Simeons Pound and Inches Protocol which features the use of HCG. I hope I don’t get a 50 day suspension from this blog.
Good Evening All…Prior engagement tonight….Kansas at the fair… I will be getting updates and as always cheering the Boy’s in Blue on!!!!!!
.
GO KERSHAW!!!! GO DODGERS!!!!!
BRING THE RING TO L.A. IN 2009!!!!
KEEP ON TRUCKING!!!!
.
Enjoy the game everyone, I like my fish, beer battered!!!!
Urgh come on Rockies break Cain no no.
Wow Garza and Halladay both pitch 9th innings and I don’t know why Toronto would’ve let Halladay pitch another inning and he was pitching well tonight and the heck with the pc at 115 is Halladay and used to it.
oops and he use to it.
Friday night- no work tomorrow I can watch the whole game tonight. oldbrooklynfan are you getting a Manny bobblehead? Mine is on the way.
Nice high hard one to end the inning by Kersh.
Shad15**
I hate the Giants, but it’s the Rockies who are in 2nd place.
I won’t be watching live as I made other plans for this evening. I have no idea who the Marlin’s pitcher is. I just hope our boys keep the streak going.
Bye for now.
I know but I just can’t root for the Giants but if the Rockies was like 7 to 8 games ahead of the Giants than it another story lol.
We tied in overall pitching ERA with them at 3.57 ERA I want that to goes up alot.
Thanx for the gift run, Johnson!
Kershaw 3 k’s but to many hits so far.
That could be the only run Kersh needs.
Geez I try to posted Loney with a terribe AB’s 3 times now.
Odooooooog!!!!! He does so well. How many hits has he saved!!!
It’s Josh Johnson, 32and53fan.
OOOODAWWWG
Looks like we got an old fashion pitching duel shaping up.
Glad they gave us that run.
I just realize Johnson rank 6th in ERA Kershaw 8th.
Urgh damn single and a double tied game
To me, Kersh seems to be pitching his usual game.
Nice heads up play by Raffy! Don’t worry Shad we’ll get that run back.
I’m still tired of seeing our guys (especially Ramirez) getting drilled without retaliation.
Well at least we can’t lose any ground on the Rockies.
Hudson looks good even when he don’t reach the ball.
Rockies lost! If the Dodgers win they’ll have a 10 game lead for the first time this year.
Come on Kershaw we need a 1 2 3 inning.
I guess we gave them that run back.
Now we gave them another one.
I might had jinxed him there.
Let’s hope the long inning effects Johmson.
Oh come on.
Urgh ouch
Ok we botched it up there a bit, but nice play by Raffy to get us out of the inning. Top of the lineup – Lets score some runs!!!
Ok we botched it up there a bit, but nice play by Raffy to get us out of the inning. Top of the lineup – Lets score some runs!!!
Hey everyone. Not sure what O-Dog was trying to accomplish with that throw. Nelly, I had a great time at the game the other night, but I missed Andre’s hr. I heard it, but didn’t see it. It was so crowded going into the parking lot that it was already the bottom of the first when we we were approaching the entrance to our section. I heard Andre announced and then the crowd errupted and the music came on that they play for a home run, so I knew he it it out. Manny’s hr was something else. My friend told me and the guy sitting next to me that Manny was going to hit a grand slam when he came up to bat and he did. It was pretty cool.
Man, the bobbleheads for the giveaways are so much better quality than the ones they sell at the Dodger store. It even has the dents in Manny’s helmet. They had a guy that works for the company that makes them on Dodger Talk after the game and he said they’re all hand painted. My friend bought me an Andre one at the Dodger store last year and it looks nothing like him and it’s not the same quality.
This is our innings.
Nice productive ab but wanted more lol
A N D R E GREAT GOIN”
Another clutch hit by Ethierrrrrrrrrr here Nelly
Andre loves you Nelly!!! Another love letter!!!!
🙂
We’re putting up a good fight.
You got it right, shad. Nice hitting by Dre. Johnson tried to jamb him but he was able to get around on it and drive it.
We WILL win this game!!!!
Hiya jhall! How’s tricks?
Matt Holiday to the Cards, that’s very, very bad news.
I was expected Nelly to pop up soon lol.
I was already dreading them games in St. Louis.
Good Luck to the Dodgers, this will really be a big test.
Thanks god that Dodgers killer got a single one more out Mac.
Lousy walk!!!
Urgh hate these 2 outs base runners that happen the last time that lead them to 2 runs.
I hate wasting 2 pitchers to get 3 outs and Leach going to get lifted in the next inning.
as usual, time to give them those runs right back
sob
We’re not out of this yet.
That guy sucks against leftys and he gets a hit.
VS. LEFT: .179 / .580 VS. RIGHT: .277 / .792 HOME: .272 / .740 AWAY: .224 / .720
it never fails, tie it up, give it back, what the F
Ouch he suck on the road to
Hermida was 7 for 12 with that hit against us this year.
Ned, we need bullpen help…NOW
I’m glad Johnson’s out of there, he was tough.
good thing the rockies lost, who do we cheer for tommorrow?
Crap.
Hey Shad, When was the last time Troncoso gave up a run and a HR?
I guess Troncoso was due to give up an ER’s
Hi’Ya Dad!! Tricks were much better before our bullpen blew up. How about you my friend?
1st homerun/earned runs since June 16 and the other runs on JUly 21 and July 4 were unearned.
Yep, I’m with you. BP is really imploding. But no worries, Vargas is warming up! LOL!!!
I’m not giving up on this game yet! Too early for that.
I guess he was due for a bad outing
Seems to me, when we get on a winning streak our bullpen guys go to sleep and get complacent!!! I guess we all have bad nights!!!! Just looks like they have a hard time staying focused!!!!
Good for you Dad!! Let’s go Dodgers!!!
We have 2 innings to score 4 runs.
But of course we have to stop them from scoring more.
Top of the lineup again last time we scored, lets do it again! Go Dodgers!!!
I know our bullpen is doing well overall. They just don’t seem to have that, Take the chicken, and wring its freaking neck mentality. Especially when we win a couple of games in a row!!!
Look like we get to face an ex Angels.
Good going Dre!
Nice start Furcal
Maybe Meyer is the pitcher coming in that we’ll take it out on.
Love Letter for Miss Nelly!!! Way to go
Andre!!!!
We’ll get another shot at this. Nothing we haven’t done before.
C’MON BIG BLUE!!!
Boy, I don’t know about ya’ll, but I keep jumping back and forth. In the time warp, out of the time warp, back in again! Sheeeeesh!
Rats!!!®
Too bad we didn’t have runners on 2nd and 3rd again when Andre doubled. They’d be back in the game.
According to my calculations, Andre is on pace for 102 ribbies! Go Dre!!!
A little ninth inning thunder!!! LETS GO DODGERS CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP!!!!
Try 104
34 homeruns 104 rbi’s
He’s really getting locked in at the plate lately, Shad. I think he’s going to have a great 2nd half.
I’m so glad Casey Blake and his .224 Batting average in july is batting 6th while Matt Kemp and his .394 batting average in july is batting 8th!
Well, as a great man once said, “Rats!!!®” We’ll just have to start a new winning streak tomorrow.
aeversw, I’m convinced that Torre thinks Kemp isn’t comfortable unless he’s hitting 7th or 8th.
Or is it that Torre DOESN’T think?
Alot of too bads tonight BleuFille’!!! Not enough, getting it done. Oh well, Mama said there’d be days like this!!!
Good to see/read you none the less. Same to you PMike!!!
Well, if this isn’t our night, I can still handle winning 5 of 6 and 5 of 8 since the break. Although I still hope to see us have a walkoff tonight!
This is it. Last chance.
5th*
Hey jhall! Yes! There’d be days like this mama said.
Great point AV!!! Always nice to see you!!!
You too, jhall! Seversw, I don’t get why Matt is batting 8th either. Casey has been struggling a bit lately so maybe moving him down might snap him out of it.
Well, we’ll get’em tomorrow!!! Maybe this will focus our bullpen!!
Didn’t lose any ground on the Rockies and as they say, you can’t win them all.
Just one of those games gang. We’ll get them tomorrow.
😦
I think they will come back and take the next two. You’re right, we can’t win every game.
EXCELSIOR TRUE BELIEVERS!!!!
It was an unusual night for the bullpen as Troncoso looked human for a change, I guess he was due for a bad outing.
I just got back home, turned on the TV and Steve Lyons is talking about the streak ending and what a sloppy game it was. Maybe I jinxed the Dodgers by leaving…
I agree oldbrooklynfan, lets hope it’s out of there system.
Padilla was diagnose with swine flu ouch.
Good night all see you tomorrow.

Thank you jhall and Shad for the shout outs.
Bluecrewgirl – I am glad you had a great time at the game on Wednesday . That was some game to attend too. It looks like Andre is picking up his pace, while maintaining those power numbers. I noticed that when he is batting now, he is lifting his right leg higher than normal, much like Manny does with his left. Well, whatever is working, he needs to keep doing it. He is looking great out there, just like he should be.
Nothing can really beat Gibson’s homer, but Ron Cey hit one in the last game of the season against the Astro’s in 1980 to put off elimination. It came with two strikes and two outs in the 9th. The Dodgers needed a three game sweep to get a playoff game, which they got, but lost the playoff. Houston had some pretty good pitchers at the time.

Sciosa’s homer against the Met’s in the ’88 playoffs should get a mention too.
Gibson’s homer will probably never be beaten, but one of my favorites is the one Ron Cey hit the last day of the 1980 season to help sweep the Astros and force a one game play off. It came with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the 9th. The Astros won the playoff, but under the circumstances Cey’s shot the day before was pretty remarkable. The Astros had some pretty good pitching then. And our buddy Joe Morgan.
My memory gets a bit faint with the passage of so much time, but back in the fifties there was a playoff game for the pennant against the Phillies that went into extra innings – I believe Clem Labine was pitching for us; then Jackie Robinson hit the game and pennant winning home run like in the 12th, maybe the 14th inning. At the time that was quite the biggest home run, but the media wasn’t quite as hyped up about those things as later on. In any case, we went on to lose another series to the Yankees that year.
Good Saturday Morning ITDland ~ NellyJune and I were at our local County Fair last night and were not with you to cheer for our team. They desperately need us last night! Never fear, we will be here for tonight’s game and a WIN BY OUR DODGERS IS A GUARANTEE! GO DODGERS!!!!!!!!!!!! DODGER BLUE THRU & THRU!!!!
That was weird. I thought the first one had gone to the moon or something.
Messagebear, the game you are thinking of was the final game of the 1951 season against the Phillies. The Giants had already won their game, and if the Dodgers would have lost they would have lost the pennant. You are correct in that Jackie Robinson did save the day, but he did it with his glove and bat. In the bottom of the 12th with the bases loaded, Eddie Waitkus hit a low line drive that would have won the game, but Robinson made a diving catch to end the inning. Then, in the top of the 14th, he hit a home run that gave the Dodgers a 9-8 lead. They retired the Phillies in the bottom of the 14th and won the game, and met the Giants in the famous 3-game playoff series ending in the horrific Bobby Thomson home run. Need I say more?
Thanks, truebluewill. Your summary brings the rest of my memory back. I was listening to the game on the radio because it was away; otherwise, we could have seen it on Channel 9. And yes, Thomson wiped out all that effort a few days later. I used to live in nearby Jersey at that time.
I was three years old in 1951 and obviously knew nothing about baseball or the Dodgers then but I still get upset everytime I see a video of Thomson’s home run. However, I guess Giants fans have to have at least one big highlight in their otherwise pathetic history.
And say what you want about Manny and how the Dodgers have handled his suspension but I just watched the video of his grand slam from the other night and how Vinny called it and it put a huge smile on my face. They will be playing this video for years to come just because of the sheer emotion and excitement that moment generated.
messagebear – In honor of your no-holding-back attitude when it comes to telling our players how they are doing, I thought you might need this to help in your efforts………

Very interesting, Nelly. I was going to suggest those moves for Joe, but then it seemed a bit impractical to do those off the dugout railing. Bowa however looks like just the kind of guy who could use a bullwhip when he’s coaching third. I can just picture PP skipping the bullwhip like a jumper’s rope, especially off that sidearm delivery.
I was wondering how long it would take for someone to connect JP to the whip.
LOL!!! I was thinking it lbirken, but I wasn’t going to touch it.
However, it might be a nice accessory piece for enchanted’s unknown tranvestitie attire 🙂

Knouff,
That weekend I made it on pure excitement. We had Bud Furillo R.I.P. then on Dodger talk. The good old days when we had extended Dodger talk. I went to all games, Bud on the radio was a big cheerleader for the team. Right after the game was over, I stood in line to buy a ticket for the Monday extra playoff game. I went to work and told my boss I need to leave early. His response was “I am surprised you are here.”. I sat in the parking log in my car so depressed that we had lost but in November I made up my mind to get a season ticket. I went along and I was this shy person that would get to the game early and don’t talk to anybody because I was really shy. I thought myself how to keep score by following the examples in the magazine. Needless to say 1981 was an incredible year that I would not forget with Fernandomania and winning the World series against the YAnkees.
.
2:p.m. ouch, need another scorebook from Big 5, and run some other errands before heading to the stadium. Gates open at 4:10 today for Hollywood Star night.

Scary thought, Nelly.
Emma- many thanks for your story. I had a bet with a guy on my fast pitch team, two bets actually. He was from the Houston area and we bet a bottle of JD on who would win the season series and who would win the pennant. The Dodgers trailed all year but stayed close enough to make it up with that last series with the Astros. It’s interesting to know how you spent that week end. I was mostly yelling at the TV. I still do, but not quite as much these days. My wife may not agree.
This is why you don’t throw in the towel. TB were trailing 8-0 bottom of the 4th and TB won it an extra innings. Wow Karros and this other announce on fox jinxed Blackburn and the Angels just had a 9 runs inning with 10 hits.
If Halladay had a 8-0 lead in the bottom of the 4th than he would had a win today other than the ND last night. They just show that Wise catch to prevent that prefect game.
I disagree with including Piazza’s HRs in the ’93 finale on the top 10 list. Sure, they were great, but they did nothing of importance in helping the DODGERS advance. It’s kind of like the “BEAT LA” thing. Is it more important to be against the other team, or for your own? For me, it’s more important to see the Dodgers do something for themselves, and I won’t lower myself to the Giants or Padres fan mentality.

That’s freaking insane the Angels have over 30+ come from behind wins and I wonder how many we have?

Sigh I hate when that post twiced. They just show the voting for Jim Rice by year but that just sad it took him 15 yrs to get in.
That was a great three game series against Houston and as I recall, that Monday playoff game was a real downer of a game.
behindblueyes, Piazza’s home runs in that game against the Giants may not be all that important but winning that game certainly was. Remember, the Giants had prevailed in a number of games that kept the Dodgers out of the World Series or playoffs, so returning the favor was quite satisfying. I recall Matt Williams being a big crybaby about how excited the Dodgers and the fans were that day. Yes, the win did nothing to help the Dodgers that season but any win against the Giants is good and a win that deprives the Giants of a playoff spot is even better. I don’t consider that lowering myself to anyone.
Breakout hitters of the NL 🙂

New thread.
Wow. Jimmy Rollins just hit a grand slam with two outs in the 6th inning to erase a one run deficit and take a three run lead!! One for the ages!! I’ll have to check to see how that ranks in the all-time Phillies HR’s!!
Oh wait. You say it’s only the 6th inning the Cardinals still have three innings to try and catch up?
Never mind.
