Congrats to Dick Gray…

We arrived in Dallas a bit ago and it’s warm…supposed to be over 100 tomorrow. Any ITDers in Dallas that check out the site on a regular basis? Surely there have got to be some of Clayton Kershaw’s old buddies on here somewhere…

And of course we’re bummed that OldBrooklynFan/PierreEastMeetsWest can’t take Frank McCourt up on his offer of a free trip out to Dodger Stadium for the ITD Tour but we’ll keep working at it. No one should be a fan that long and not get a chance to see Blue Heaven on Earth.

And from Mark Langill, here’s a cool note:

Congratulations to former Dodger third baseman Dick Gray who will be inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame on June 12 (tomorrow). Gray was a rookie in 1958 and made his Major League debut in the team’s first game on the West Coast, at San Francisco on April 15.

Gray hit the first home run in Los Angeles team history on April 16 during a 13-1 victory at Seals Stadium. He also hit the first Dodger home run at the Coliseum on April 18 in a 6-5 victory over the Giants. Injuries limited Gray to just 58 games in 1958 and he batted .249 with nine home runs and 30 RBI.

The Dodgers traded Gray to the Cardinals in June 1959 in exchange for outfielder Chuck Essegian. Gray, who joined the Buena Park School District after his baseball career, today is retired and lives in Anaheim and Louisiana.

    32&53,
A friend made me a copy of the 1958 yearbook. He lives in the East Coast and came over for the game at the Coliseum last year. He comes to Dodger Stadium once a year. He is another oldtimer and he remembers when he first got his 1958 yearbook. I read his posts in the Dodger forum first then met him when he came over the stadium.
    .
Saturday my friend Lore and I will be at the ESPN center in L.A. watching the game from there. Anyone else will be there?

Hey Emma! Good to see ya! So, I see you’re back home now!

    Hey Josh!
I think there are some (or at least one) ITDers in Dallas, but off the top of my head, I can’t remember the screen name. I’ll try and check it out and will get back to you if I find it. And speaking of screen names, when we have our ITD tour, do the Dodgers plan on having name tags, seeing how we know most only as their screen names, and not their REAL names. Okay, okay, I said, “Hi Emma” above, but Emma is one of the few that I know the actual name.

  3. crzblue2

Hey cpompe1! Ok, I know your name! Carol! Actually I am in Boston close to the airport. I leave at 7:30 tomorrow morning. I should be in bed but I was waiting for a job for work to finish and reading a book by Paulo Coelho. Well, good night. Isn’t Ramguy that is in Dallas?
    Emma

  4. cpompe1

Hey Emma!!! Yes, my name is Carol! So you’re not home yet. Well, have a safe flight home! Rams kinda sounds familiar as to the ITDer that’s in Dallas. I’ll check it out…

  5. cpompe1

Hey Josh and Emma!!! Yes, ramslover IS the ITDer that lives in Dallas!!! Below is part of what rams posted earlier today…

… come on to Arlington, I will be there Friday and Sunday…
By ramslover on June 11, 2009 8:26 AM

Rams, hope you don’t mind me reposting that for you. Josh was wondering and, well, I thought you wouldn’t mind… 🙂

  6. cpompe1

    Emma (crzblue2)
    Rose (msrussyethier)
    Debbie (nellyjune)
    Jane (trublue4ever)
Eric (well, that’s easy; his screen name is dodgereric!)

Actually, I think that’s all I know. I’m sure I’ve heard another name or two, but I just can’t think of it…

  7. cpompe1

Now how pathetic is this? Me talking to myself! I think Emma’s gone to bed, seeing how she has a 7:30 AM flight tomorrow morning!!!

  8. nellyjune

Good Evening ITD readers and writers!!!!! Boy, it’s been a slow ITD day. Thanks for the new thread Josh, and thank you again for offering Joe Pierre the trip out to Dodger Stadium. You are right. Nobody should be a fan that long and not see one of the best places on Earth to be at.

    Congratulations to Dick Gray!!!!

CP – Sorry I wasn’t around earlier. I was over at my girlfriend’s house catching up on the show “Lost.” I can’t watch it during the school year, so she is willing to watch it again so I can stay caught up. So, there are three of us that are going to take our summer vacation and catch up.

  9. bluesplash09

  13. perumike

Morning all! Have any of you already registered for the tour? Did you send your credit card info in your initial e-mail, or wait for a response requesting it?

  14. ryandietzdodger@yahoo.com

Anybody hear anything on Broxton velocity being so down the other night? apologise if this has already been discussed

  15. thinkingblue

Perumike….MIKE….I requested for a phone number to do the ordering of the tickets. I don’t know about putting my credit info over an e-mail….scary too me!

  16. amyw27

Rose- same with me. life is crazy right now. Slow day today though! The tour will be fun- it’s been a long time coming.
Sara and I signed up together..so we will see you there 🙂

  17. trublu4ever

Good Morning Russy, Perumike and Amy ~ NellyJune did it that way too Mike. She had no problems. I can’t wait to meet you all!
    .
Good Morning to you too, Dodger4life (Bob)!

  18. amyw27

The tour is going to be a lot of fun!!! I can’t wait to meet everyone and catch Dodger baseball together. We need to take Lots of pictures for sure.

  19. perumike

I agree, the tour is going to be great, and it has been a long time coming, but I’m glad Josh kept on it. What was it, October or November that we first discussed it?

  20. thinkingblue

    TRU Good morning!
    *
AMY I am still working on the game. We are going to the tour, but we might be able to go to the game due to a prior engagement….which I am trying to get out of. But fo’ sure I am at the tour!

  21. amyw27

Yeah Mike! remember when Josh was planning for first thing in January? We kinda overshot but i think it’s cool that it’s happening during a game day….will re run into any players?? I hope so!! 🙂

  22. perumike

Yeah, me too! I just talked to Dustin and got my name on the list for the 11:30am tour! He said it will be a good one!!! I am SOOOOOOOOOO excited! Well all, I’ll be back in a few hours, have to run an errand. See you this afternoon!

  23. thinkingblue

He told me that we are starting on the top of the Park in Lot P. And that Josh will be giving the tour…YEY JOSH! We will need to enter through the Elysian Park Ave. gate and they will direct us to the Top of the Park from there. The tour will include more than the general stadium tour, but we will not know exactly where we can go until June 27th.

  24. dodgrdog88

i’m an LA native transplanted here to the dallas area two years ago. i’ll be at the games tonight and tomorrow. no way in hell am i sitting in the afternoon heat on sunday afternoon!

    go blue!

  25. cpompe1

Good morning ITD boys and girls!
Wow! I was not expecting this kind of response after me talking to myself last night!

Nelly – Don’t worry about it that you weren’t here last night. It was actually kinda amusing to me! I don’t watch Lost; never did get into that show. But I’m glad that you were able to get caught up!

Shad – How could I forget Sara! Sorry Sara! I was probably fatigued last night; maybe I wasn’t getting enough oxygen to the brain to think of Sara! (Okay, don’t go there…) But yeah, it was kinda lonely last night, but like I said to Nelly, it was kinda amusing too!!!

Now D4, I hope you’re not asking ME to bring the nametags, huh? 🙂 I’m thrilled that you’re coming!!!

Yeah, Mr. Piano Man – I didn’t want to send my cc info over e-mail (too scary!) but I just sent an e-mail to Dustin and asked him to call me back. He called the next day and then I gave him my info…

And also Mike (Oh, there’s another first name I know!!!) I just want to thank you for the initial suggestion of a tour! If you don’t remember, I’ll refresh your memory: Good morning everyone! I hope everyone is doing well. Josh, can we have ITD day at the stadium with a tour, and if during the season, a game? By perumike on October 16, 2008 8:58 AM

Bluesplash/Dodgrdog88/Ramslover – Have a great time at the games this weekend!!!

    GO DODGERS!!!
    GO KURODA-SAN!!!

  26. redfox@q.com

Interesting to note yesterday’s Pirates/Braves game. Delwyn Young tied the game at 1-1 with a 5th inning HR and Andy LaRoche won the game with a 9th inning 2-run single 3-1. It’s great to see those two players who got the shaft with the Dodgers doing well elsewhere. LaRoche is batting .298 and making some spectacular plays at 3B. Young is batting .333 and would have been a valuable player off the bench for the Dodgers if they hadn’t given him away for basically nothing this year.

Also worth noting: Edwin Jackson is 6-3 for Detroit with a team-leading 2.24 ERA.

  27. cpompe1

Yeah redfox, they’re doing well, but for me, if I constantly looked at ALL the players that we have traded and/or didn’t re-sign over the years, I’d be driving myself nuts! I just want to focus on the team we do have and what can we do to make it even better!!!

  28. nellyjune

Redfox – I am glad they are doing well.

Hey CP!!!! I haven’t got caught up yet. We are starting by filling in the pieces, which is alot for me, and then the recent season. So, it will take all summer of Thursday nights. We used to go out after work on Thursdays, so it’s just replacing that. As far as real names, I know quite a few, but won’t reveal unless they reveal them themselves :))))) I can’t wait for the tour.

  29. redfox@q.com

cpompe1, I understand what you’re saying, but for me there is a lesson here in what we can do to make the team even better. That is to stop always looking to sign veterans to long-term contracts, thereby blocking the opportunities for our younger players, and then giving the young guys away for little or nothing. That has been the pattern of current management, although Ned did show some restraint this year, so maybe things are improving. Still I wouldn’t have signed Furcal, Blake, or Ramirez for more that 1 year with 1 or 2 TEAM options. Locking in older or injury-prone players is risky, expensive, and costly in young talent.

  30. nellyjune

Rose – I am bringing Mariya and tru is coming down with us, along with Dodger4life. My boys won’t enjoy it since they are Giants fans, and quite frankly, Michael would wear is Gnat stuff, and it would just be embarrassing. We are meeting up with Dodgereric since we got game tickets together so our two kids can sit by each other. Like Eric told me, I would hate to be the people that are in between them if they can’t sit by each other.

  31. cpompe1

My Nellygirl!!! Oh, so you haven’t got caught up yet. Okay. Sorry, Nelly I didn’t mean to step on your toes (and your mom’s toes) by naming names. I just got carried away, and I shouldn’t. Sorry. But you’re right, this tour is going to be great!!!

  32. nellyjune

Sorry Amy – That comment was for you. For some reason, I thought it was Rose who asked who I was bringing. I am glad to see you on here. It’s great that you and Sara are coming together. I can’t wait to meet you.

  33. nellyjune

Stepping on who’s toes? Not mine at all!! You did good remember Ramslover last night for Josh, and it looks like we found a few more that live in Texas as well. That’s a pretty good ITD showing for the Dodgers in Texas. I have been to that Stadium, and it’s pretty nice. It’s the only non-California Major League Park I have been too.

  34. cpompe1

Yeah redfox, you’re right. Yes, sometimes I put the blinders on and don’t want to know or dwell on former Dodgers and how they’re doing. I wouldn’t be so upset at the trading of Edwin Jackson, if we got someone of quality in return. Bottom line, we didn’t (isn’t that the trade where we got Hendrickson & the catcher – can’t think of his name?) I don’t mind aging players. As long as they can produce, I’m fine with that. What I mind is re-signing severely hurt players like Raffy. I didn’t mind him being re-signed, but no, I wouldn’t have given him such a long contract. For Raffy, I was saying 1 guaranteed + 1 club option. The most I’d do with him was 2 guaranteed; nothing more than that. I’ve always thought that his contract is way too long. And it’s Blake DeWitt that’s getting the short end of that stick. Raffy’s locked up for a few years; Blake is locked up for a few years. With the O-Dawg playing as well as he is playing, I have NO DOUBT that the Dodgers will offer him a contract extension. If that happens, then DeWitt is expendable, and I DON’T want to see him traded. DeWitt has way too much upside. But my gut is telling me that someday he will be traded. Maybe not straight up for someone, but in a package, I’m sure. I know I’ve been using the dreaded “t” word associated with some of our younger stars lately, but seeing how our rotation needs help, I do see something happening.

  35. cpompe1

Okay Nelly, I just don’t like it when I stick my foot in my mouth. Let’s see, the only non-California Major League Park I’ve been to is Kaufmann Stadium in Kansas City. I may go to the Metrodome in Minneapolis this summer, but not sure.

  36. cpompe1

Oh, and how can I forget that I’ve been to Coors Field and the BOB (that’s what I still call the D-Back’s stadium)!!! But I’m not counting those; those are in the same division as the Dodgers!!!

  37. nellyjune

The Metrodome seems interesting, doesn’t it? I watch the Twins play some because I like watching Morneau and Mauer play.

  38. cpompe1

We’re going back to the Midwest for a family reunion; we’re flying in and out of Minneapolis. We’ve talked about it, but we have other plans, so I’m not entirely sure if we’ll go. But I’d love to go!!! And yes, Morneau and Mauer are worth the price of admission!!!

  39. cpompe1

Our family reunion is in July. Can’t remember the dates off-hand, but it’s in July. But that is one thing I’m NOT looking forward to; spending time in MN in July. Yuck, all those bugs!

Well, I’ve gotta go; got stuff to do. I’ll catch up with ya later…

  40. nellyjune

me too:) This may give Jamie Hoffmann some playing time with maybe Andre DH’ing perhaps…………or Loretta maybe?

  41. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

possibly.. i think at least one day this weekend we’ll see russell DH with ausmus starting.. but i’m not sure about the other two days..

  42. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

i’d be fine with hoffman DHing.. i want to see the kid play a couple games.. we all know loretta and ausmus and castro.. it’s the kids that need some real at bats..

  43. nellyjune

That would be good too. I would like to see Jamie get some playing time. Too bad Xavier Paul isn’t healthy and back with the team. That would be a nice extra bat to have as well :))

  44. amyw27

Nelly- oh that’s great! It will be good to see you your “Dodger fans”. We would NOT want any orange and black in our presence! Meeting you all will be great.
    .
    Interleague play here we come!

  45. trublu4ever

I’m looking forward to meeting all of you guys too! It should be a blast! I just don’t know if Josh know what he’s getting himself into! LOL

  46. nellyjune

I think this group will just be an easing in for Josh until next year when we do this again and enchanted, messagebear, jhall, and the other major ITD players who couldn’t make this trip are with us.

  47. perumike

    I’m back all!!!

cpompe (Carol) – Thanks for the reminder, I knew it was in October sometime! I’m just glad to see something I really just threw out there grew legs and now will be a reality!

  48. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

i think we all would shad.. i think we were just saying it’d be nice to get hoffman in the lineup for some at bats.. i’d definitely rather see his arm over pierre’s

  49. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

yay, this tour will be a blast.. so who do we know that’s in for the tour for sure?

    Eric
    Dnelly
    Trublu
    Amy
    Sara
    Carol
    Rose
    Bob
    ?

  50. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

no cpompe, joe pierre turned down the offer.. he can’t make it this time
