Draft Day

The Baseball Draft has gone Primetime, so to speak, and is on the MLB Network as we speak. We don’t pick until #36, as our first-round choice went to the D’backs for Orlando Hudson but right now, I’d say no one is complaining about that!

Mark Langill looked up this interesting stat below…of course, who knows who we’ll get. I’d imagine our first pick will come around 5:30 PT.

High School Pitchers Drafted and Signed by Dodgers

(at least 10 starts with Los Angeles in one season)

Chad Billingsley — 32 starts/2008; 20 starts/2007; 16 starts/2006

Clayton Kershaw – 21 starts/2008

Dave Stewart – 14 starts/1982

Rick Sutclffe – 30 starts/1979

Rick Rhoden – 23 starts/1978

Doyle Alexander – 12 starts/1971

Alan Foster – 33 starts/1970; 15 starts/1969

Pretty interesting stuff…shows how hard it is to hit on a high school pitcher and yet, we’ve done it twice in the current rotation.

Anyway, here’s tonight’s lineup:

Pierre, LF

Hudson, 2B

Ethier, RF

Loney, 1B

Blake, 3B

Martin, C

Furcal, SS

Kemp, CF

Billingsley, P

That is a huge span between Dave Stewart (1982) and Kershaw/Bills in 2008. And both Bills and Kershaw made it into the rotation before the organization thought they were ready. Is there a message here?

  2. trublu4ever

Can’t wait for the Dodgers to beat the Padres tonight! GO DODGERS!!!!!!!!! DODGER BLUE THRU & THRU!!!!!!!!!!

  3. dodgerbuddy

It’s good to see the A team in. It will certainly be a great game to watch tonight. GO DODGERS. With this BLUE CREW in we should get the win tonight.

  4. nellyjune

dodgerbuddy – I know I have seen you on here a few times, but are you fairly new, or you a long timer with a changed name. If you are new, welcome to ITD.

    Nice lineup!!! GO DODGERS!!!!!!

  5. lbirken@aol.com

If you read Moneyball you will find out what Billy Beane of the A’s thinks about drafting high school players, especially pitchers. He does not think a high school pitcher is worth the money versus a college pitcher.

  6. trublu4ever

lbirken ~ I don’t think so either. Way too many freaky things happen to pitchers. I’d rather have a 5 tool position player.

  7. lbirken@aol.com

I like the core of young players currently on the roster but sometimes I do wonder why the Dodgers have not been able to develope a superstar type player such as a Pujols, Howard or that type of impact player.

  8. 32and53fan

I emailed the Dodgers and asked about the ITD group tickets for the day of the tour, June 27.
Q:What is the procedure for those of us attending the ITD tour? Do we have to remove our cars after the tour and re-enter the stadium later?
Where will the group tickets be located and what is the rate?

A:Yes you would have to remove your cars after the tour and enter again later on for the game. The tickets will be located in section 3 in the infield reserve at a price of $18 per ticket (normal price is $28).

it’s a slow week with the dodgers only playing 5 games this week.. i know they could use the break, but i was definitely spoiled by being able to watch them 7 times for the last couple weeks..

leekfink, great post at the end of the last thread.. i’m not sure how many people saw it.. but i really agree with you about the young players and our optimism coming to fruition 🙂

  10. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

has anyone heard from oldbrooklynfan/joepierre? i hope he knows about the offer from josh/frank and can make it out here!

  11. lbirken@aol.com

Emma, I am a West Coast guy but on the rare times I am in the East during baseball season and the Dodgers are playing at home it is difficult to go to bed without knowing what happened. And worse, when you stay in a hotel and you get a USA Today in the morning, it shows the results as “late”. No kidding.

  12. crzblue2

Ibirken, I know! i hate not getting any report from the West Coast. Oh wow! Boston is leading the Yankees 7-0. I think that game is on two different channels here.

  13. oldbrooklynfan

    Hi ya Doin’ Everone?
Looks like the Dodgers picked a LHP by the name of Aaron Miller in the draft.
    Good luck.
You know what we have to do tonight, beat up on the Padres.
    GO TEAM.

  14. trublu4ever

There you are Oldbroolynfan! YOU ARE COMING TO THE ITD TOUR COURTESY OF FRANK MC COURT AND THE DODGER ORGANIZATION!!!All of the information is on the previous thread………who you have to contact to make the arrangements.

  15. nellyjune

oldbrooklynfan – You need to read the previous thread. You are coming out to Dodger Stadium – Frank is paying 🙂

  16. bluecrewgirl

Hey everyone. Should be a good game tonight. Hopefully the day’s rest did them some good.

  17. crzblue2

True! You called it! You just knew oldbrooklyn fan was going to show up prior to the game!
    .
oldbrooklynfan, Let me know if you need a ride from the airport or to the airport. I must say I also recomend the Flyaway from the airport to Union Station which is 5 minutes from the stadium.
    Emma
    http://crzblue.mlblogs.com/

  18. crzblue2

I leave my car at Union Station when I travel and take Flyaway bus. $6 each way and is never crowded. Hey I forgot to mention that when I was coming back from Chicago, one of Furcal’s brother was on the same plane back to L.A. There were also some basketball prospects there.

  19. trublu4ever

I think it would be great if they had a limo pick up Joe Pierre. He deserves the full treatment!

  20. redfox@q.com

Batting Kemp 8th is totally inexcusable. Martin and Furcal should be batting in the 7th and 8th spots, at least until they get their acts together. Kemp should not be batting lower that 6th. I don’t see how Torre can justify batting Kemp, with his power and average, below those two.

  21. crzblue2

Oh definetely True! He only gets a ride on an old Solara with me. My Solara has almost 200K miles. I can’t believe I have put all those miles in that car. My other car is a 1968 chevy truck.

  22. bluecrewgirl

The Dodgers had better break out of their funk tonight because it looks like it might be a long night for Bills.

  23. 32and53fan

Maybe Joe views the 8 spot as the 2nd cleanup hitter. With good hitters 1-8, it makes some sense.

  24. trublu4ever

Boblee ~ I just gave up and listen to the game on the radio. I like to keep up to the minute, not a half to an inning behind!

  25. nellyjune

………..and oldbrooklynfan, the Dodgers are playing the Mariners as well, so you will get to see a game too 🙂

  26. bluecrewgirl

I posted an answer to your question, but on the prior thread by mistake, lol. It starts at 11:30 AM by the way.

  27. 32and53fan

    From Picciolo, Dustin [DustinP@ladodgers.com]

The tour cost is $10 for adults and $7 for children (14 and under) and seniors (55 years and older). The tour will be led by Josh Rawitch and begin at the Top of the Park in Lot P at 11:30 on June 27th. You will need to enter through the Elysian Park Ave. gate and they will direct you to the Top of the Park from there. The tour will include more than the general stadium tour, but we will not know exactly where we can go until June 27th.

Please e-mail me your credit card information and how many people will be attending and I will make your reservation. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Sincerely,

    Dustin

  28. aeversw

Our “Cleanup Hitter #2” is better then our Cleanup Hitter #1 and our 5 spot hitter, 6th spot hitter and 7th spot hitter…A complete waste of his talent. He could be helping this team much more batting higher in the lineup. Him and Dre should be back to back. There is no legitamate reason for him to be batting 8th.

  29. aeversw

Matt Kemp better get used to being left on base all the time with the pitcher behind him. Complete waste!

  30. nellyjune

Oldbrooklynfan – the Dodgers are treating you to the ITD tour and the game ………………………….this is for you 🙂 This is from Josh on the previous thread.

Plus, we have some great news to share. I spoke with Frank McCourt about your idea of bringing out OldBrooklynFan and he immediately agreed that we have to do it. So, OldBrooklynFan, please email us at notes@ladodgers.com and we’ll work out the details. The Dodger organization is thrilled to have you out here!

  31. 32and53fan

OBF – From the previous post by Josh Rawitch, Dodger VP:
Plus, we have some great news to share. I spoke with Frank McCourt about your idea of bringing out OldBrooklynFan and he immediately agreed that we have to do it. So, OldBrooklynFan, please email us at notes@ladodgers.com and we’ll work out the details. The Dodger organization is thrilled to have you out here!

Looks like they are giving you the VIP treatment. Prepare to be in some publicity pics.

  32. nellyjune

okay – we really have to stop doing this!!!! However, I think it’s more strange when dodgereric and I have done it, and then there’s jhall and enchanted posted the same song at the same time.

  33. aeversw

He’ll probably get benched! He’s so underappreciated by Joe Torre. Even when Kemp had a 10 game hit streak and hit over .400 during that stretch he got moved down in the order. It’s a joke that he bats 8th. He has improved so much since he’s been called up and he doesn’t get rewarded for it. If only he’d be given a chance to bat in front of Manny. I’d love to see what he could do with all those fastballs he’d get but I guess Joe would rather have him protected by the pitcher.

  34. oldbrooklynfan

I sent an e-mail but the response was the Dodger schedule and nothing to do with the tour.

  35. 32and53fan

…of course that is mere speculation on our parts. Maybe McCourt is just going to pay the freight for your transportation and expects you to pay for the tour and game like the rest of us IDTers… but I doubt that. 🙂

  36. enchantedbeaver

Brooklyn – if you’re having trouble getting through leave a note on this thread in ALL CAPS so Josh will see it and I’m sure they’ll get ahold of you somehow. My guess is that the game and tour are on Frank. I would imagine lodging is as well but if not, your friends here on ITD won’t let you come this far and not be able to go. I’m in for a Jackson or two.

  37. bluecrewgirl

Maybe it’s one of those email addresses like when you email customer service at some websites and you get an autoreply when you send the original email, but then a real person gets back to you when the email is actually read.

  38. trublu4ever

I wish there was a way we could get in touch with Josh so that Joe Pierre is taken care of properly.

  39. 32and53fan

I sent emails to the addresses specified in the previous post and got replies, that I have posted earlier on this thread, by real Dodger employees.
I’m pretty sure all you have to do is email at the notes@ladodgers.com address and let them know that you are “OldBrooklynFan” who was promised the VIP treatment by Josh and Frank. They will coordinate the details of the trip with you.

  40. nellyjune

Oldbrooklynfan – Just reply to the e-mail, and you will be taken care of, and if not, like enchanted said, the ITD bloggers will.

  41. enchantedbeaver

And Brooklyn – I fully expect to see a picture of you on the Dodgers main webpage standing in between Joe Torre and Juan Pierre.

  42. oldbrooklynfan

I sent the e-mail and I got one from them and it didn’t say anything about the tour.
There is a lot about the Dodgers on it but nothing about the tour.
    JOSH:
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW YOU OR THE DODGER WILL ARRANGE TO GET ME TO LOS ANGELES.
    Sent response to:pierreseastmeetswest@yahoo.com

  43. trublu4ever

JOSH, OLDBROOKLYNFAN, ALSO KNOWN AS JOE PIERRE, NEEDS YOUR HELP WITH THE ARRANGEMENTS FOR HIS TRIP TO THE ITD TOUR. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. enchantedbeaver

Is Billz ever going to go 5-6 innings UNDER 100 pitches?? That’s why he still has a long ways to go before anyone can anoint him “ace.”

  45. oldbrooklynfan

I don’t think the Dodgers liked having it so well known nation wide that they aren’t a homerun hitting team and that they are 27th in the league.

  46. nellyjune

enchanted – you are right about that………………just a little pull and it would have been number 3.

  47. crzblue2

Joepierre, You probably hear from the Dodgers tomorow.
    .
I was having such a hard time in the room with the computer. It kept kicking me out so I am using the one in the lobby. there are 5 guys guys and a lady that sound like chickens in a hen house . Oh and they are Laker haters.

  48. bluecrewgirl

I read the headline, Nelly, but hadn’t read the article yet. Sounds like he’s definitely keeping in top shape and as for the rest, I guess the only way he can make up for it is to come back and help the team.

  49. aeversw

This is why matt kemp shouldnt bat 8th. It takes the bat out of his hands in key situations. Now we have to depend on Loretta whos 0 for his last 21.

  50. enchantedbeaver

You know the closer Loretta gets to becoming Sweeney, the more Joe uses him in key ABs when you need someone that can drive the ball.

  51. enchantedbeaver

No excuse for using a slumping Loretta with the bases loaded when you’ve got a guy with a good track record with the bases juiced like DeWitt.

The more Slappy’s turning back into Slappy, the more Joe’s turning back into JoJo.

  52. oldbrooklynfan

I think I might have trouble sleeping tonight, since I’m not use to not knowing what’s ahead of me.

  53. enchantedbeaver

I’m excited for you Brooklyn – it’s just awesome that they’re doing this for you!!

  54. trublu4ever

oldbrooklynfan ~ sleep tight. All you have to know is that you are the guest of the Dodger organization to be a part of the ITD Tour!

  55. jhallwally

Hey Trumom, “Who wrote the book of love”!!!!
Who put the bop, in the bop sha-bop, sha-bop, sha-bop!!!

  56. boblee4014

Hey oldbrooklynfan, I’m jealous. I’m 69 years old and been a Dodger fan since I was 7 years old. I hope you have a great time in LA.

  57. jhallwally

Don’t sweat it Brooklyn!!! It will all work out in the wash. I’m very happy and excited for you. Should be a blast!!!
I’m also very impressed with the Dodger organization. Very classy move!!!!

  58. nellyjune

oldbrooklynfan – What’s ahead of you? A Tour of Dodger Stadium, watching a game at Dodger Stadium, and you get to meet most of us…………………..but then again, that may be a little scary. And the best part, is all you have to do is sit back and relax because the Dodger Organization is taking care of everything. Don’t worry about a thing…you will be taken care of 🙂 Don’t worry about being away from ITD either – lol. Enchanted, jhall and messagebear will be in charge, which is also a little scary.

  59. enchantedbeaver

I think if you tested him now, JP would have 4X UNDER the testosterone level of a normal man.

  60. jhallwally

Hey Nelly, Trumom might defect to our party if she reads last nights thread. LOL!!!! Beav is breaking out the chaps!!!

  61. nellyjune

jhall is in the ITD House!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wally – she read them, and she just might stay 🙂

  62. oldbrooklynfan

I know I would enjoy being with you people but I’m not use to having a dream come true.

  63. trublu4ever

I did read them early this morning and I was laughing so hard, my husband woke up and had to come check on me…he thought something was wrong!

  64. enchantedbeaver

    Well my friend.

I’m afraid I’m hanging up my crooked thong and assless chaps – don’t want to give people the wrong impression.

  65. bluecrewgirl

Hey, jhall! Good to see you. Nelly, Andre is up to .280. I was really getting nervous when he was about to drop below .250. He’s moving on up.

  66. enchantedbeaver

You know Wally, by the time you and I and Bear are done on here on the 27th, Josh R. will probably be wishing he was the host of Dodger Thoughts.

    jk – or am I?? 🙂

  67. jhallwally

BonJoir BleuFille’!!! Likewise!!! Merci!!! Andre looks like he will be just fine.
    Agreed Beav!!! LOL!!!

  68. nellyjune

bluecrewgirl – He is doing a remarkable job pulling himself out of this slump. It’s amazing how quickly those numbers can go up and down so fast.

  69. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

oldbrooklynfan.. i know you must be excited at the thought.. you’re going to get to come out to LA and get a tour of the stadium.. and then you’re going to catch a game with us.. Josh, Frank, and the dodgers will take care of you! I’m so happy that Josh is helping to arrange this for you.. reading that this will be a dream come true for you makes me so happy 🙂

  70. trublu4ever

Charlie called Andre “One Red-Hot Hombre”. And, just think a week or so ago, they were saying what a dreadful slump he was in!

  71. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

trublu, when you hit 2 homers in a game everyone will call you redhot!

  72. sparkleplenty_1

A wise man once said that batting averages are like elevators. They go up and down all the time.

  73. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

yes trublu, juan has cooled off considerably.. i hope raffy starts playing better and then joe can move him back up top and bat juan 9th again

  74. nellyjune

Oldbrooklynfan – your dream has come true. I am guessing on June 27th, you will be standing inside Dodger Stadium. I know it’s overwhelming, but you will be just fine. Take a deep breath, sleep good and like you said, you will know all the details tomorrow.

  75. Dodger4life

    Hey everybody……
    .
Joe Pierre when I seen that you were included in this event, I had a smile from ear to ear. Frank and the Dodgers have never made me smile more. Frank I was deeply touched by your generosity, This is the Heart of Dodgertown at it”s best.
    .
I seen Manny spoke today, and I will make a comment, I myself have hit some hard and difficult times. It may happen again who knows. I do know that when you find a place that is truly different and willing to accept you for who you are. You my friend have found something special. I can say this speaking from my own expierences, and it has changed my outloook not only on the way I go about my buisness but on the way I effect the lives of others. We love ya mon. Do us proud please, not because of what you can accomplsh on the diamond, but rather for the laughter and good will you can bring to everyone that you come in contact with. You are in a pretty unique position with all the lives you can touch, regardless of your success on the ball field. I will have your back as long as you have mine. We are a TEAM and we shall forever remain a Team long after the Thrill of living is gone.

    .
    GO DODGERS!!!!!
BRING THE RING TO L.A.IN 2009!!!!!!

  76. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

i guess we should have known the dodgers would win today.. the first reason being that the padres are just not very good.. the second reason being that the lakers lost, and they’ve been alternating wins and losses with the lakers ever since the finals began

  77. koufax1963

    Good Evening ITD,

The Mailman Dre is delivering, mail does not come on Sunday, as we saw. Too bad Brox got touched, made that 9th a bit of a heart pumper, but all is BLUE now. I’m glad to see Manny Speaking, hope he gets together we the team frequently. And the Tour details have been annouced!
What a great start to the week! Have a good night All

  78. nellyjune

On the postgame show, Matt just called Andre a “beast”, and he says he will use whip cream instead of shaving cream from now on 🙂

enchanted – you are smiling over those stats, aren’t you?

  79. kpookiemon

enchanted, I’m with you…I hate defensive indifference. The chance of a guy poking it through the right side doesn’t warrant taking away a possible force play and denying a runner scoring position. Weak. Play the game.

  80. ramslover

Frank, Josh and the Dodgers, thank you for making it possible for Jor Pierre to go to Dodgers Stadium. For a man to remain loyal to a team that literally ripped his heart out when they left Brooklyn, he must be an amazing man. Joe Pierre, enjoy the game and the beauty of Dodgers Stadium, it is well deserved.

Dodger4life, I also liked your post about Manny, I also welcome him back. I really think he showed the young guys last year that the game is fun and should be played that way. He made a mistake and alot of people have villified him for it, but he has taken his punishment and it is time to move on. I, unlike some, do not need to hear an explanation or apology. All of us have made decisions that could have had extreme consequences in our lives so lets not be overly critical. Should we be angry with him, sure, but he does not owe us anything, except when he comes back July 3 or so to play hard and contribute to the 2009 WORLD CHAMPIONS DODGERS.

This is only my opinion and I am sure that there are many that have differing opinions..God Bless America!!!

Have fun on the ITD tour and it is great that alot of you will get to meet each other..Wish I could go!

  81. trublu4ever

Good Morning ITDland ~ Nice win last night. Even though Billz was not sharp we managed to hit the long ball and win a game we should have won. Let’s do it again……..winning is fun!
    .
I also agree with you Dodger4life and Ramslover about Manny. With him back in our lineup we will be unstoppable. Who know, between now and July 3rd, we may even convince Messagebear and NellyJune to come over to our side! lol

  82. trublu4ever

I’m hoping with the dawning of a new day that Oldbrooklynfan got everything taken care of for his trip to visit Dodger Stadium and take part in the ITD Tour.

game 2 of this wonderful 2 game series tonight.. i’m not sure exactly when MLB decided to have 2 game series, i think it was last year.. maybe the year before.. but i think they’re stupid. it’s too short.. stick with 3 and 4 games =P

  85. selltheteam

Martin hasn’t had an RBI since May 25. Why not switch him and Kemper, put Matt at #6 and Russell at #8 ?

  86. enchantedbeaver

Hey with JP slumping and Ferk not hitting much at all this year, I’d like to see Kemp lead off for a couple weeks.

Only reason I can come up with for batting Kemp 8th is that without him there the bottom of the order would be really weak.

  87. selltheteam

Oh yeah, okay, lets have Loney Kemp Ethier in the 7/8/9 positions. We can’t have a weak bottom of the order.

  88. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

i feel like furcal has show some signs of life lately.. hopefully he’ll continue to improve and then there won’t be a question of who should lead off.. i wouldn’t mind kemp leading off a couple games.. but i don’t think we can leave him there.. he still strikes out too much..

  89. aeversw

    FurcalRussHudsonDreBisonLoneyBlakeSlappy

That would be the way i’d line up the team. I was thinking that maybe moving Russ up to the 2 spot or even lead off would help him. His power has regressed a lot this season but he’s still getting on base and that seems to be more of his game. He’ll never hit 20 home runs so we might as well use what he’s good at doing (getting on base) to our advantage.

  90. cpompe1

Good afternoon ITD boys and girls!
Great game last night! It’s great to see Andre swing the bat the way we all KNOW he can!!! Crash, I’m with you; why is Kemp wasting away in the 7th or 8th spot? I understand that he has too many strikeouts, but especially having him bat 8th, the Dodgers potentially have 2 strikeouts in a row! And Sara, you’re right; to move Kemp out of the 7 or 8 hole makes too much sense to Joe. I wouldn’t have Kemp any lower than 6th. Oh well, what do I know. I’m just a fan… But even with Kemp batting 7th or 8th, he is STILL raking!!! Can you imagine what our games would be like if he hit higher in the lineup??? BTW Crash, is my fellow San Buenaventurian coming to our ITD tour?

  91. dodgereric

Sara – Yes, my husband and I are going on the tour. And before Josh officially announced it, we already had tickets to the game that night. A previous post yesterday said that the tickets that the Dodgers are offering for sale to ITDers would be located in section 3 in the infield reserve. Well, the tickets that we already had on the other side of the aisle, in aisle 1. These are my mom’s season seats. She’s out-of-town that weekend, so she asked if I wanted it. I said yes!!! Are you coming to the tour and the game? I’d love to meet you (and the rest of my ITD friends!!!)

cpompe1 – I am in Camarillo and going to the ITD tour. Do you want to carpool? I have not decided whether to go to the game later that night. The $18 ticket and $15 parking not to mention stadium food is tough on my small fixed income. If I went to the game, I might park outside and walk in.
