Trump Is Getting Lots of Advertising These Days…
I guess that’s what happens when you own most of the world!
First it was the Miss California in the Miss USA pageant…today it was Manny’s meeting with the team at the Trump Sonesta Resort here in Miami…and Thursday it will be our Dodgers Dream Foundation Golf Tournament at Trump National in Palos Verdes (a few spots still remain if you’re a golfer by calling 323.224.1413). Everywhere I turn, Trump is there!
All trumping aside, Manny obviously spoke to the team today and while there’s tons of coverage around the country on that piece of today’s news (ESPNews is taking Joe Torre’s pregame media chat live in about 45 minutes), we of course have a game tonight here in Miami so that’s where players’ minds seem to be focused at the moment.
Same lineup as the last couple nights…with Stults on the mound this time. And with Eric Milton moving into the rotation, we’ll have four lefties starting consecutively for the Dodgers for the first time since 1986 (thanks Dave Smith at retrosheet for that fast fact).
That’s about it for now here at sunny Land Shark Stadium in South Florida. Joe Torre will be the guest on the pregame show on KABC 790 with Rick Monday and he’ll also touch base with Steve Lyons and Eric Collins on the KCAL broadcast right at the start of the game.

How did that work out for us in 1986? Well, our overall record was 73-89. The four lefties were Valenzuela 21-11, Honeycutt 11-9, Reuss 2-6, and Dennis Powell 1-5. We also had two righty starters, maybe you remember them – Welch and Hershiser.

mdavis – Good question. Some possible answers – the bullpen needs to be bolstered. Milton was the best pitcher that was throwing on the farm, and he has almost never relieved (once in the majors). Weaver could be a good long relief man, and with the starting pitching staff we currently have, we need some good long relief.

Hello all it has been a while. As for the Manny saga, not surprised that he tested positive, it does not really bother me because more are doing things to enhance their performance than we will ever know. What bothers me most is that he was not smart to realize he would get caught..Players have been doing things to enhance their performance forever…In the 70s and 80s and probably before it was “greenies” and there are people in the HOF that partook in them. As for the meeting, short and sweet, what could you really say except sorry I let you down and hug everyone and move on. There is no way to justify it, so move on. He is still a great player and will be when he gets back.
Stults, I anxiously await for what happens when he pitches…Soft tossers are scary to watch. Good luck and lets win.
As for #9, so far he has performed admirably and I hope he continues to hit the ball. I would like to see Xman, but unless #9 gets hurt it is not going to happen.

Crash that would be too smart to take Schmidt off the 40 man…that should have happened last year…If we take a real prospect off for Eric Milton we have bigger issues…But he is a Dodger and we root for our boys in blue….

That was quite a game yesterday imagine taking 2 out of 3 from the Phillies. Who da guess that?
Here’s another tough cookie, the Marlins- coming up.
So Manny met with the team for 10 minutes and seemed embarrassed and remorseful. For what? For taking junk, getting caught or the lie of an excuse he was going to use to try to get out of getting caught? From what was printed in the L.A. Times today Manny pretty much got caught on a technicality. He was going to try to lie his way out of things until his medical records showed the female fertility drug and that is what sealed the deal for him. He is out 50 games and some money but this is not a mistake and not something he can deny. He can be as sorry as we wants but he did this knowingly and then tried to cover it up.
I like Manny as well as the next person but I am conflicted with what to do next. Not only does it appear he was on something it also appears he was ready to lie about it. He may not be the only one doing this but he is the only superstar on the Dodgers who got caught. He is the one on which the Dodger organization and many fans devoted so much time and energy during the offseason and spring training. Right or wrong he is the one player so many felt was essential to the Dodger’s sucess this season, and now he is out for 50 games not due to injury or something beyond his control but for something he did of his own accord. I am having trouble with that.

Did I understand the article correctly in that it said he did not test positive for the female fertility drug, as originally thought, it was only found in his medical records that it had been presribed for him, and what caused the positive test was that his testosterone level was so high that the only explanation for it was that it was caused by a synthetic substance and that DHEA, which is not banned, could not cause that much of a spike so the only explanation for it could be steroids? That is what I got out of it at least.
But he didn’t test positive for a steroid, you’d think that a drug test would detect a “steroid”.
From what they said today, the only hard evidence they could get him on was the prescription in the medical records… elevated testosterone levels themselves aren’t prohibitied (I don’t think?), but the causes of those levels ARE prohibited. But all of them aren’t detectable in MLB’s current testing methods, and they NEED a detection as hard evidence to suspend a players. They didn’t get that evidence, but the Rx was enough to book him.
I’m glad the team is doing good enough that the drama isn’t sinking my outlook. We’re gonna get past this.

Bluecrew, that is what I got out of the article as well. Unless something comes out otherwise, I can only conclude he knew what he was doing and thought he could get away with it. The system that is supposed to protect his rights actually helped “convict” him and that is what most likely caught him by surprise and made him decide to just accept the suspension. I can only guess how that conversation went:
Manny: I can’t believe they don’t believe me when I told them it was for a personal health issue. Everyone has those problems these days. Just look at all the ads on TV and in the magazines.
Boras: Manny, you don’t have much a case but don’t worry. Things will be a bit uncomfortable for a while but the Dodgers and their fans are so desperate they will welcome you back with open arms.

I was spending time reading up on Manny just now, trying to catch up. Well the main step has been taken. The meeting will blow away a lot of tension.
That bunt in the first inning by Furcal, down the 3B line, that just curved foul, reminded me of a walk off bunt by Ron Cey, some years ago. Cey’s bunt rolled along and stopped just short of the bag. The winning run scored and nobody picked up the ball before game went off the air.
My daughter Cathy, my older daughter, was so amazed by it.
She kept starring at the ball on the TV screen as it faded away.
Northstate, I was listening to ESPN on the way to work the other day and I can’t remember who’s show it was, but someone posed the questions of how he could pass all the drug tests he did if he was doing steroids and someone on the show said that it is possible if done under the supervision of someone who knows what they’re doing that the level of steroids in a person’s system can be kept at such a level as to not be detected by the testing they currently use. Who really knows the truth? Only Manny does. I still like him and I know we all make mistakes. I also don’t think that steroids would help someone at the talent level of Manny or A-Rod to be a better hitter. I think they would still be great hitters. I think it would only help in the home run department. I think if MLB and the Players’ Union had come up with a formal policy a long time ago, none of this would be happening. I also think they’re being a bit hypocritical to investigate players who may have done them when they weren’t even testing for them and they weren’t technically banned. Not to mention, I think tax payer money is probably being used for the Congressional investigation. I can think of other ways I would like my tax dollars spent. Just my opinion.

From what I have checked about steroid testing, there are online suppliers who advertise that one can eliminate traces of steroids in as short a period as four days. They obviously advertise to the athlete audience. If you do your steroid cycles over the winter months, when presumably there is no testing, then take the medications that will eliminate traces for testing purposes, it’s entirely conceivable that you could be taking and never be discovered on standard tests. I’m also not sure whether players have to get a certain notice period before they’re tested, or whether the tests are entirely a surprise as to when they are done.
I don’t think we’ll ever hear a satisfactory explanation from Manny, and certainly not from Boras or anyone else on their team, for what actually was taken and when. Given their earlier intentions to plain lie about the situation when originally planning their appeal, why would anybody believe anything that Manny has to say now. Oh, except that he’s sorry, and that I believe. Sorry to have gotten caught.

From what I have read, steroid use doesn’t really make a ball player that much better but certainly can help build strength, endurance and help recover quicker from injuries and the wear and tear on the body. And I agree that MLB was remiss in creating a realistic policy about PED’s a long time ago.

messagebear – these last two wins were huge because they came through as a team to win…….hitting, pitching and defense were all factors in these last two wins, with some luck, but they never gave up and that is just wonderful.
Stock up on the palliative of your choice. Many nights, it’s going to be a rough ride with this bullpen. And, if the starters don’t start carrying more of the load soon, an already questionable bullpen will be just that much worse.
Since Nelly was asking what’s the attendance was tonight so here it is on espn 20,039 (52% full) – % is based on regular season capacity.
Mets just tied it up 5-5 on a Wright 2 runs double.
Nelly, I absolutely agree that these wins have been huge. This was the road trip where we needed to prove what we’re made of. I would have settled for a 3-3 split, and we’ve locked up at least that with a real gutsy team effort. This team seems really on the verge of being great, and sans Manny we don’t really have a proven star – that’s what makes it a great team.

Nothing quite like that classic Ike and Tina. I’m from El Segundo and I’ve always regretted I passed on the many chances to see them.
Very much agree the starters need to get deeper into the game. We’ve got Weaver in the pen now and that’s a help, but we need more than 5 or 6 from whoever starts. Like it was also pointed out, this is going to be an adventure with this bullpen. I was bragging on Brox the other day at work, turned on gameday just in time for him to give up the hit with the runs that tied the game in Philly. Two, count ’em, two walks last night. YIKES!!!!!
