McCourt needs to grow a pair of grapefruits and sign Manny already. I think he’s doing everything wrong. Give him his money. They are compromising on the years and McCourt needs to compromise on the money. Maybe instead of him and his wife havin side by side Malibu homes we could have Manny already.
If Manny isn’t a Dodgers its McCourt’s fault and no one else’s. I think he’ll lose the fans for good if Manny isn’t signed. Fans already don’t believe a word that comes out of his mouth.
Hey Nelly. I don’t know what happened to the station I used to wake up with but this morning a station from San Francisco woke me up saying “is raining..” I was like what? I did not know it was going to rain. Then I realized it was the San Francisco weather. When I am in the car late at night I can I can pickup the flag station of the Giants. I like hearing the Giant fans complaining about their team.

Please Josh, relay to your boss that this posturing with Manny has gone on too long. The Dodgers were right to wait out Manny. Now that he has surrendered and basically accepted the Dodgers’ offer, let’s sign him already. Don’t pull the whole plug and say it has to start from scratch. McCourt’s whole interview regarding that looked and sounded really childish for an owner of a Major League baseball team. Regardless of what Boras has done, the owner has to take the high road. Everyone knows the Dodgers have won, let’s not rub it in. What goes around, comes around. Thanks.

That’s my biggest problem with Pierre scott – he always looks the same. We can say Pierre’s plays exactly how he’s always played and get angry at Joe for putting him in there, but the fact is, Pierre refuses to change his game for the better. He’s only as good as how many times he get’s on base, but he won’t work on trying to draw walks. Instead he always swings at bad pitches, never goes deep in the count, and won’t learn the strike zone. His bunting’s atrocious, but you never hear of him working with Wills. He won’t learn to move a man over with an out. He won’t work on strengthening his arm to make better throws. Hell, if he’d just learn to get a good accurate hard throw to the cutoff man rather than the rainbows he lets go it would be a sign of attempting to correct a deficiency.
I mean look at DeWitt. He’ll do anything and play anywhere just to make the team. JP just announces that he’s not going to sit silently if he’s not playing.
That’s why I nip at JP heels day and night. I know he’s trying to do his best, but I’d rather him try doing something to show us he’s working on improving his game, not just say what he’s not ever going to be.
Enchanted ~ I totally agree with you about You Know Who. I suppose I’m going to get a scolding again but I really don’t care. You get to the point where you just cringe every time he comes to bat………kind of like when Sweeney was with us. For all of his so-called conditoning, you are right about him not working on the fundamentals of the game. To me this shows a self-centered human being.

I agree. Most players with arms that bad never even get a shot in the bigs. I’m not expecting him to throw out some fast dude tagging at 3rd, but he can’t even throw out Lasorda. If you don’t have an injury, how can you possibly not improve?
Not JP’s fault for lacking ability, but it’s his fault for thinking he should be playing over better players. That’s myopic and selfish and dishonest. Just collect your $45 million and shut up.
Guess that makes DeWitt learning SS even more valuable. Too bad, I was looking forward to seeing what DJ could do in the minors this year. Hopefully it won’t be as bad as it sounds.

Well, in terms of “you know who” – that depends on what you mean by good luck…….not that I am requiring injury, but just saying…..

I say “three cheers” for McCourt. I’m glad to see the Dodgers finally refusing to cave in on the ridiculous contracts that many of today’s players feel they’re entitled to. Manny is a prima donna who is only interested in himself. He doesn’t care about his team mates, the fans, or the Dodgers. He only cares about himself and how much money he can coerce from some owner.
Sure, he had a great run last season, but does anyone really think he can produce those kind of numbers in the next year or two. Look at the performance of Manny, Dunn, and Abreu over the last five years. Overall, Manny’s numbers are not much better than theirs, and in some categories they are not even as good. Yet he should be paid two and a half or five times as much as they are earning? That doesn’t make any sense at all in today’s economy!!
And although there was a honeymoon period for the Dodgers and Manny last year, that almost certainly will NOT continue. Look at Manny’s history. Remember that year after year the Red Sox tried to trade Manny when he was in his prime, even putting him on irrevocable waivers, and there were NO takers. And now there are good reasons why no other teams have made him an offer.
I’m getting a little tired of hearing people say that McCourt should pay Manny whatever he wants and blaming McCourt for not caving in and signing Manny. I say the Dodgers are finally exhibiting some sanity in their signing process after being made fools by Boras in the past. And besides being economically wise in today’s economy, not signing Manny might even prove to be a blessing that most fans can not envision now. One only has to think back to the euphoria exhibited by most Dodger fans when Andrew Jones was signed. The impact Jones’ presence had on the team was very negative. And an unhappy Manny, which he almost certainly will be by the time this is over, could even be worse!
…then why doesn’t he just come out and say “We are not going after Manny” and be done with it?

Comparing Ramirez to Dunn, Abreu or especially Jones shows a lack of baseball knowledge in my opinion. Those guys are not hall of famers – Ramirez already is even if he never plays another game.
The Dodgers beat Boras by not giving in to the 4-5 year demands when no one else was bidding. If Ramirez hadn’t bailed on Boston, there would have been several teams offering big money and multiple years. Thus, the Dodgers demand for a short term contract.

redfox, I tend to agree with most of what you say, but McCourt is starting to depart from what has been a good stance to one who is acting like the idiot I believe him to be.
I was one who was excited to have signed Jones, I’ll admit. But signing ANYONE to ANY sort of contract is a gamble, even the most inwardly stable person (i.e. Mark Teixiera). If Ramirez didn’t have the baggage he does, he would have had those other offers Boras claims to have. But, as far as projecting the impact he’ll have – positive or negative – no one can say. All you can do is weigh the pluses and minuses and decide whether he’s worth it or not. I think the possible upside is worth the possible downside, and obviously McCourt does as well, because he offered him arbitration. But I would make that second-year option MINE if I were McCourt, not Manny’s.
I’ll also agree with one of those links I posted, the one that said if McCourt starts offering less at this point, he’s going to get Manny upset. And if he’s bound and determined to downgrade his offer, why bother? Announce you’re moving on and then DO IT.
I was never in favor of signing Manny at any cost, but he is a very reliable hitter and would fit perfect in the Dodgers lineup taking pressure off of our beloved young stars.

“You know who” to be utile at all has got to play small ball at a proficiency level far above the average major leaguer to make himself as valuable as a .250 hitter with some power. Admitting you don’t have a power bat doesn’t excuse you from picking up the rest of your game.
Mickey Rivers played small ball well. Brett Butler played small ball well. Freddie Patek played really small ball – they all understood that they had to be better at other facets of the game to make themselves an asset to the line-up.
“You know who” unfortunately is just happy playing like “you know who.”

Refox, I enjoy your perspective and have agreed with much of what you have said. I have never been in favor of signing Manny unless the deal made sense. And I also think the Dodgers fortunes this season rest more on the pitching than on anything else with or without Manny. I will admit the Dodgers would be better offensively with Manny than without him while he is marginally better in left field than JP. I also have stated a number of times I am concerned about the hero-worship status Manny has attained by his stint last year which we all agree would be difficult to duplicate over the course of a season.
All that being said, I now find myself disgusted with the way negotiations are being conducted in public although to some extent I understand why both parties have done so. The fans are being exploited by both sides. If the Dodgers really want Manny, sit down with him (and his agent who I will not mention by name) and negotiate a deal both sides can stomach. If Manny really wants to be a Dodger, the same goes for him and his agent. As fans we expect both parties to conduct themselves professionally and not drag us into the equation.
I have been behind McCourt for most of this debacle but if the reports of his latest response to an offer by the agent are true, he has started to lose the PR war. (By the way, the John Heyman article quotes unnamed sources including another owner; another example of a reporter being used to fight the battle for one side or the other.) Frank, I understand you are miffed but it is a mistake to let us all know! You had to know this was not going to be easy when you took Manny on last summer. This is getting to look more like an arbitration hearing where both parties rip each other apart, then make a deal and pretend everything is just great.
One question: where was all this restraint and close to the vest strategy when the contracts of A. Jones and JP were discussed?
Whether Frank is winning or losing the battle, he’s acting like a jilted lover, not the owner of a world class baseball franchise.

Enchanted, that is exactly what is wrong with this whole process: a player should be signed for what he can do to help a team win, not to win PR points with the fans.

That was my light at the end of the tunnel. I feel horrible about DeJesus. It seems that there are many injuries during ST. I also am looking forward to the WBC at the end of the month. All those with season tickets and preferred parking: be sure that they send you your preferred parking for those games. They had to send mine separately after I called to inquire about them. It looks like you had a great time at openng day festivities at Camelback, crz, fantastic!
The new guy, Mitch Jones has some power. They said yesterday he strikes out a lot but Bowa really likes him. I guess he’s kind of like Adam Dunn. He’s a nice looking ballplayer……good size and maybe he’ll ge a chance.
I found the discussion about JP trying to improve his game amusing. We know JP shows up early and works hard but I think it is unreasonable to expect him to make improvements to an arm that will never get any stronger. I do think it is fair to question his offensive approach but not reasonable to expect him to agree with that criticism. We really don’t know how hard he works on bunting or anything else for that matter. JP’s real curse is the contract given him by the Dodgers and then the decsion to sign another weak defender (Luis Gonzales) to play next to him in left field. I have to believe Dodger management knew quite well about the defensive shortcomings of both players but saw a meager offensive as a more pressing matter.
Mitch Jones is 31 years old, a non roster player and most likely a career minor league player to this point. With the effort it took for Kemp and Ethier to crack the starting lineup I think Jones would be a huge longshot to make the big league club. Of course, anything is possible and I wish him all the luck in the world.
I know he isn’t young, but I’m just thinking what if we don’t sign Manny? I’d rather have Repko the Yougnomewho, but due to the salary we are paying him, Repko probably won’t make it either.
Jones could provide some power off the bench, which isn’t too bad this year.
Pacucci has looked good as well this Spring but the best he and Jones can hope for is a spot on a minor league team. Still, look what happened to Blake DeWitt last season so hope does spring eternal this time of year.

Jones is this years Lindsay (Lindsey?) a career minor leaguer that won’t even get a call-up in Sept. unless he has 40-50 HRs. 40 man roster spots are too precious, so I doubt he’ll ever see the light of Dodger stadium.
That’s just it birk, it shouldn’t be amusing. A good ballplayer should always be trying to improve. Weaver’s trying to reinvent himself as a swing man/reliever. DeWitt will play anywhere to gain a spot on the roster. Ethier didn’t just say I’ve got more talent than JP, he went out and proved it.
Strength training couldn’t hurt JP in his throwing, and/or he should at least be working on his accuracy. Right now he throws rainbows helter skelter and that’s all he’s ever done. That’s not bettering yourself. That’s accepting mediocrity.
Its obvious from watching him over the last two years JP doesn’t work on his bunting. Hell the other day he popped a bunt to the shortstop. How many times did we watch him square to bunt last year a just foul it away? Again, that’s accepting mediocrity.
And for a guy that makes contact and doesn’t strikeout much, he has no concept of working the count or learning the strike zone. He knows he makes contact anyway, so at BP he should’nt even take a bat, but rather stand there and callout whether the pitch was a ball or strike until he can learn the difference. Slapping at everthing that’s around the plate is surrendering to mediocrity yet again. Its no accident that when he plays full time he’s always in the top 10 at making outs.
JP doesn’t strike me as having a learning disability, so the only conclusion I can draw is that he doesn’t want to improve. No ballplayer should be ever be stagnant. In fact, the older a player gets, the harder he has to work to keep up with the younger guys. Look at Andruw – he let the game totally pass him by. If a player has reached a comfort level and decides that’s “his game”, then he’s going to get runover from behind (unless you have a fool like Joe propping him back up.)
Enchanted, all good points. I never quite thought of things that way and until you brought it up I don’t think anyone else did either. Also, JP is not getting any younger so his whatever skills he does have will start to decline at some point.
enchanted – like I said, when you speak you speak very, very well. An absolutely fabulous post, my friend. There is absolutely nothing to add.
Enchanted is exactly right. Not only that, but if any ballplayer had his lack of skills he would be in the minors, if playing at all……..but, because he is owed so much money, management feels he should be playing. And that is a shame because there is somebody who could step in and get the job done, given the chance.
I guess what bothers me most birk, even more than his skillset, is that he made no mention of EARNING a spot in the outfield, but rather a statement that he wasn’t going to sit and take it silently like he did last year (I guess that must’ve been a mouse in his pocket that said they were “really sticking it to him”) if he isn’t starting. That smacks of entitlement. $10 mil doesn’t entitle you to anything except a big bank account.
When owners had complete control, a player had to earn his position year in and year out. Not saying the players shouldn’t have had more rights back then, but the brand of baseball was sure a lot better.
That’s what it comes down to enchanted,is he feels entitled to that position. Even when he would reference the players last year, he wasn’t even considering himself in competition with Ethier at times. He actually shrugged Andre’s abilities off like his only competition was Andruw. Well, I guess he got his wish because both he and Andruw sucked last year. Talk about lowering your standards.
I’m not trying to be a hardass just on JP – I know he’s trying to the best of his current ability, its just he doesn’t seem to try and raise the bar of his ability.
I’ll get on anybody that isn’t trying to become better. I just can’t think of anybody else on the team right now that that would apply to.
DNelly, I just read that Torre said Andre will take a few more days off. That sucks. Must have been a bad bruise.
The difference between players like DeWitt making the club in ST and guys like Lindsey and Jones is that, unlike Lindsey and Jones, DeWitt has potential and is on an upward career path towards the big leagues. The D’s expended a draft choice and bonus on him and have a vested interest in his success. Lindsey and Jones are known quantities in their late 20’s or early 30’s that have reached baseball’s version of the “glass ceiling”. They’re like Crash Craddock in “Bull Durham”.Occasionally, guys, like the 33-year old rookie catcher for the Cardinals last year, break through that ceiling but they’re rare. My guess is that those two guys don’t have a lot of professional options outside the game.
E, great post!!! As in any other profession, the hugely successful players in baseball don’t rely solely on their abilities and are always looking to make adjustments in their game. As with AJ and JP, the game eventually catches up with those who don’t .
I feel bad for Repko. Last Spring he absolutely dusted JP and DY…and the Dodgers sent him back to AAA after the Red Sox game in the Coliseum, Joe saying he deserved to stay but was a victim of numbers (JP’s ridiculous salary and DY’s lack of options). Fast forward 12 months and Repko is hitting .111 to DY’s .091 and JP’s lustrous .000–all three in the tank. With the Dodgers’ tenuous pitching you know they’ll carry 12 arms out of Spring Training, leaving just four utility positions, not counting back-up catcher. Assuming Manny, that means Loretta and Pierre, with the last two coming from Hu, DeWitt, DY, Repko, Castro. I don’t like Repko’s chances…UNLESS Ned saves his own job by moving Pierre prior to the season. Who do you want in left field for that late-inning defensive replacement? DY, Pierre, or Repko?
I hear ya Kahli, but unless Ned does move JP, he’s a lock for “defensive replacement” which is a frightening thought in and of itself, but one that has already played out last year. DY proved of value as a PH so as long as he’s healthy, IMO he’s a lock. Castro’s playing all-world right now, and he’s a vet, so I think he’s got the inside track so far as infield back-up. DeWitt I think they’ll want to give ABs at Alb.
Honestly though, as long as JP is on the roster, Repko, DY and Paul don’t stand a chance.
Pretty sad bench though. Two dink hitters, two old guys and DY.

Seeing how my b-day isn’t until the end of April, maybe, just maybe by then I will be able to use it for an actual garden (or good luck) instead of therapy when JP is playing in a game.

Boy, I just got done watching some of the highlights of the race. I mean I knew some of it, but I got an earful this morning from my 7 year old NASCAR buddy this morning so I had to watch some of the other stuff. That was some race,and to top it off in fantasy I split. My team with Kyle lost and my team with Denny won. I thought with Kyle winning the race would have won pretty easily, but I was very wrong in that assumption.

Frank still has a bloody nose from Boras over Andruw Jones and it shows.

Good Morning ITD readers and writers!!!! I hope everyone is having a Ethieriffic Tuesday. I figure if I have to suffer with Andre out for a few more days, I might as well find ways to enjoy putting his name into my posts anyway. Looking forward to the lineup, both with us and the Padres to see how they are doing. They have been pretty quiet trying to unload a lot of players, so it will be interesting to see where they are headed this year………most likely to the bottom of the division I would think.

At first, I thought Frank was doing his best to sign Manny…Boras was coming off as the jerk. Now, I feel McCourt is being the childish one. I myself, would be “miffed” if we don’t get Manny signed. Mostly because if Frank wasn’t going to get the job done, he should have gone after Abreu or Dunn, which he didn’t. So, he led us, the fans, to believe Manny was going to be a Dodger. As I said yesterday, if Frank doesn’t get this done, he will be the one needing the brown paper bag!
My question enchanted ~ Will the casual fan even care if the media spins it to make Frank and the Dodgers look like the victim?
Nellyjune ~ The casual fans are the ones who adore Manny. I think a lot of revenue would be lost without him in the lineup.

rintinjim made a point last night. He thought that maybe Frank is afraid of signing another Andruw (perhaps not physically, but mentally doesn’t care). However, that being said, then just be honest and say that then. Don’t allow the real fans to go through a roller coaster ride throughout the off-season thinking any day now, Manny will be playing in left field batting 3rd or 4th. We could have looked at other options rather than being stuck with yougnomewho.
I don’t think it is the economy……..McRanch is expecting large crowds……….fans will save if they have to, to go to the ball games. Perhaps buying cheaper seats, but they still need a diversion. So, Frank, open your checkbook one more time and give the fans what they want. Just think of the “Flaming Dreadlock Cheetos” you will sell…….the #99 jerseys and a full house every night.
