Slice open the grapefruit…er…cactus

The Cactus League is upon us. Been having internet issues, so I hadn’t posted the lineup until now and I’m guessing you already have it. Pierre, Ausmus, Ethier, Loney, Blake, Kemp, DeWitt, Young and Abreu.

Birthday wishes go out to the Cubs’ Ron Santo and Dodger assistant trainer Rick Lembo. And get well wishes to Rick Monday, who is sick with the flu and that’s why you’re hearing Charley Steiner with Josh Suchon right now on KABC, if you’re listening. Ken Levine will pop in the booth for three innings as well and hopefully Mo will be back by Saturday’s game.

Other than that, just the usual day of Manny rumors and excitement. ESPN is here at Mesa to cover the story in 24-hour fashion but I don’t really have any update to offer. Keeping my fingers crossed, as are all of you.

Hello there Joe. Nice to see you! I hope all is well out there in NY.
    .
By the way I used to live in Port Washington.

  9. colliethec

Sweet. It’s been a few years for me. ’74-77. I was a young guy in those days. They were good times. The snow wasn’t a problem when you’re a kid. You just get to enjoy it.

  10. alex41592

Spring Training Update: Top 5: Ken Kadokura pitching:
Pierre tries to bunt for a hit and grounds out to short

I remember going to the Hamptons before it was what it is now. We’d fish for blue crab and catch tons of them. It was so much fun.
    .
I also loved going to Oyster Point to see Teddy R’s place.
    .
I’m sure it’s changed quite a bit. One of these days I’ll make a trip out there. It would be weird for me.

  12. enchantedbeaver

    With apologies to Aretha Franklin…

    R-I-S-P-A-V-G little Juany’s O for 3
Stick it to him, stick it to him, stick it to him, stick it to him, stick it to him, stick it to him…

  13. colliethec

I remember going down the hill in front of our house on my Big Wheel. I would go as fast as possible and then pull on the brake and turn the wheel and totally spin out or rollover due to the ice.
    .
It sure was fun as a kid but I wouldn’t want to deal with it as an adult & having to go to work… spinning out in my car or having the snow plow plow my car! That would be a bummer…

  14. colliethec

I loved getting a slice of pizza and a lemon ice. They were great!!
    .
We went to the Catskills and saw Raquel Welch do her show.

  15. trublu4ever

Wow, dcollins, I remember the lemon ices! Yummy!! When i was a young lass, we went to te Catskills too…….all I remember was it was very similar to Dirty Dancing.

  16. nellyjune

joepierre – I am doing great!!! It sounds like you are doing pretty good yourself I am guessing.

enchanted – very good, very good 🙂

Grand slam – what is that all about. Who was pitching?

  17. alex41592

We’ve entered the ‘who is that?’ portion of the ballgame.

Spring Training Update: Bottom 5: Ramon Troncoso pitching: Danny Ardoin catching replacing Ausmus:
    Brad Snyder walks
Theriot singles to left, Snyder to second
Darwin Barney reaches first on fielding error by Hector Luna to load the bases (if fielded cleanly it’s probably a 5-4-3 DP, so of course…)
Hoffpauir hits a GRAND SLAM to right field, 5-3 Cubs
Fuld flies to Repko in center
    Fontenot grounds to short
Doug Deeds hits a comebacker to Troncoso
    4 runs 2 hits 0 LOB End of 5 5-3 Cubs

So Juan’s in mid season form – pop to left, grounder to the right side, and a pathetic bunt to the shortstop.

New nickname for Pierre – The Chupacabra – he sucks.

  20. colliethec

Eric — You asked… She showed enough for me to realize there really was a difference between men & women & that I really liked women… I was like 9 or 10. Yikes she was pretty!

Hey guys, do me a favor. When you go on the ITD tour, if you get to meet Ned, kick him in the nuts for me for signing Juan Pierre.

  23. cpompe1

Oh, and Eric. That video never ceases to make me LMAO!!! Especially when thinking that Ned’s the one on the floor!!!

  24. dodgereric

My brother-in-law sent that to me a couple of years ago after a particularly bad Charger game. The title was changed from Lions to Chargers, of course. LOL!!

more giddiness!! Mark mentioned me in his post at http://mlblogs.mlblogs.com/ He said:is

“3:52: “Giddiness! We have a ballgame!!” That is the headline of our friend and Dodger blogger Emma. Every now and then you keep seeing other blogs and message posts and interviews with MLB team owners and fans and all of us who really sum it up with only a few words. “We have a ballgame!!” is one of those things you hear on this day. Gotta love that! She knows that her Dodgers went to the last National League Championship Series and that they are loaded with young guys and a great manager and coaching staff — no reason to think the Dodgers couldn’t be in the World Series this fall. Whoever gets there, it all began right now. We are watching and listening all day. This is an amazing day.”
    .
    Wohoo!!

Tony Jackson is reporting that the Dodgers have offered manny a two yr 45 mil…25 this year and a player option for the 2nd yr at 20 mil..

  34. jungar@wsgcorp.com

what did Schmidt make like 4k today? Glad he is feeling blah..He is only able to throw a fast ball and a change up or the 80mpher and the 70mpher..oh this is gonna be a long spring come on eric stultz or tronsco..emerge.

  35. kpookiemon

“The Dodgers have made another offer to Manny Ramirez, a two-year deal calling for $25 million this season and $20 million for the next — providing the slugger chooses to exercise the second-year option.

“The player option on the second year came at the request of Ramirez’s agent, Scott Boras, said a source with knowledge of the situation who did not have authority to speak publicly.

“The Dodgers will now wait to hear back from Boras, who will be carrying the offer to his client.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmm, not so sure that gets it done, if true…

  36. enchantedbeaver

It should Kahli. The fact that it was Boras that requested the option, and no one else is exactly lining up to offer 3-4 years at $24-$25M per, I think even Manny can read the writing on the wall.

Hell sign Canseco, sign Lofton – I just don’t want to see JP anymore than is absolutely necessary.

  37. Dodger4life

    45 million – Boras’s cut is???? 20 million – Boras’s cut????
    .
What an agent!!! I would be a little PO at Mr. Boras right about now!!!
    .
    GO DODGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. kpookiemon

enchanted, why would Manny sign a contract for a $20 million option year in 2010…when he just go out from the very same number in 2010 had he stayed in Boston? Obviously the $25 million this year is the plum…but I just don’t see Manny picking up that option if he bites on the contact. So isn’t everybody right back to $25 million for 1 year???!?!?!?!?!? My nerves……..

  39. kpookiemon

In reading more details, Boras not only dropped the third year option from the original contract offered last Fall, but also requested an escape clause after one year, thus assuirng free agency one year from now. Whatever. Play ball. Sign Manny. Trade Pierre. Repko becomes the late-inning defensive replacement.

  40. Dodger4life

Take the deal Manny, then fire Boras. Come tear the league up AGAIN and get a new agent.
    .
    GO DODGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BRING THE RING TO L.A. IN 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. heartruss

Hello ITD. Hi Trublu, crz, cpompe1, Nellyjune, Dodger4life, enchanted. How was everyones day?? One week until I will be in Blue Heaven

  42. Dodger4life

It seems that Boras the super agent just cant get anybody to rally behind Manny and the Boras Team. The press has been reporting that the problem is that Manny left Boston under less than stellar terms. That and the fact that baseball has been trying to reel in salaries this year, Manny’s age is a factor and the belief that he can’t produce a better season ever again? Welcome to 2009 in a downturning economy alot of companies and yes 25 million a year constitutes a company in my eyes, are readjusting the way they approach the world in general. Lets say Manny takes the deal providing that noone else re – enters the equation. Then comes to work with nothing but heartfelt appreciation for the ability to collect one of the biggest paychecks anyone on the playing field has the oppourtunity to cash this year. Does a little PR work getting involved in not only being a leader on the ball field but off as well. Becoming a Goodwill ambassador to all the good people out trying to make ends meet day to day only to have doors slammed in there face repeatedly. All while producing another supierior performance between the lines in 2009, and replacing one of the most unliked agents in the game. Can he turn this around in 2010??? I’m willing to bet Yes. Will he only Manny knows the answer to the equation facing Manny. 20 million next year is still pretty good though….especially with the option of renegotiating. With a more favorable agent and all the hard work and Goodwill put foward in 2009, he should have the press writing favorably in his defense. Even the press has to satisfy the hard working out of work Americans to sell thier story, and nobody like’s a Storybook turnaround any better than us. So what do you say Manny, I have faith in you…. Come back to L.A. and lets accomplish this goal together.
    .
    GO DODGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BRING THE RING TO L.A. IN 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. nellyjune

Good Evening ITD readers and writers!!!!

enchanted – you were on the mailing list? LOL!!!

heartruss – doing great and I can’t wait for you to report on your time at Spring Training.

  44. colliethec

    Nice D4!
    .
I sure would be sweet to get our Manny…
    .
I think he might take this one seeing as they gave Manny the option of dropping the 2nd year & that’s what BorASS was wanting. I was thinking 2 @25 but it gives the player the power position by giving them the option, so maybe that is why it’s less money the 2nd year. That to me seems like something that BorASS wanted so I think this might happen.
    .
I don’t know if anyone commented on the Rangers game today but the ball was flying out of the park.
    .
For everyone except you know who.
    .
    0-2 w/2 K’s & 3 LOB.
    .
In both of his K’s he didn’t take a ball. It’s probably just he’s trying to prove himself to a new team, his knee hurts, or the fans were on him.

  45. shepherd96

    Nellyjune,

I hope you are getting those IOUs ready. Get those pen fingers warmed up.

I’ve got my accountant on alert!

    I feel it, I feel it. ;^]>

  46. kpookiemon

Assuming Dodgers sign our hero…and assuming Joe wants to go left-right-left, etc…here’s my feeble guess:
    Furcal (S)
    Hudson (S)
Manny (R)–over the course of the long season, Manny will get more ABs in the three-hole than four-hole.
Ethier (L)–tough call…Ethier’s got more plate discipline than Loney, especially after Manny’s many unintentional walks.
Kemp (R)–tough call…Martin will be rested weekly, don’t want to tunker with the five-hole.
    Loney (L)
    Martin (R)
    Blake (R)
    eric, you’re the manager…what say?

  47. trublu4ever

Kahli ~ our lineup actually looks pretty good, doesn’t it? Not really a weak spot to be found. What a differnce Manny will make………..no……now batting 2nd #9 !!!

  48. nellyjune

Kahli -THAT is an awesome lineup!!!! At least last year, James hit into too many DPs. So, I am thinking Ethier right where you have him because if the table is set and Manny doesn’t knock them all in, Andre should at least Sac Fly or walk himself. He led the team in Sac Flies last year, and he hit into very few DPs. However, Kemp could be a nice change in that spot too. I could see them sharing it depending on who’s pitching.

  49. nellyjune

That is true shepherd 🙂 I think any of the four/five (Ethier, Kemp, Loney, Martin or Blake) could handle it, but that’s what makes having Manny in the lineup so sweet because any of the batters after him can knock one out of the park too so the pitcher can’t relax after Manny either.

  50. nellyjune

Hey Aaron – best of luck to your Indians this year. I will be watching them as well – 🙂 I was just telling our Dodger friend jhall about you last night. He is from Columbus, and he keeps an eye on the Indians too 🙂

  51. dodgereric

Boy, it would probably have been easier for Larry the Cable Guy to get into MIT than it was for me to get into this site tonight.

    29 minutes left, trumom!

  52. nellyjune

That was me the other night. I had to get in through the back door from my own site, and that was a suggestion from dodger4life. How are you doing this evening?

  53. dodgereric

Doin’ ok. Tonight was TV catchup night. I taped the last 2 periods of the Kings/Flyers game while we went to dinner and to my mom’s, so I watched that when we returned. Then last week’s Heroes and the first hour or so of the Oscars (the race came first). Now I see Manny has yet another offer.

How are you? It’s a shame your classroom has been disrupted.

  54. bluesplash09

I’ll be happy once we sign Manny, mainly because i’m workin nights now so I should be asleep, but anytime I start to come out of sleep I have to turn on sportscenter or check the Dodgers site to see if any updates have happened, so for the sake of my sleep schedule….TAKE THE DEAL MANNY!! GO DODGERS!!

  55. nellyjune

Well, it was only for about the first hour and a half. It happened right after my morning post on ITD and came back on about 10:00, in the middle of reading group time. We managed through the day pretty well after that. We got some pretty good writing in 🙂 and math is always good. I guess Michael heard someone was shot during the incident, but I haven’t watched the news or heard anything substantiating that claim. The highschool always hears different versions of stories than what we here. Our students, to my knowledge, didn’t even know why the power was off.

So, you watch heroes? I watch it during the summer when I can watch it from end to end. It’s one of those shows if you don’t stay on top of it, you lose alot in what is happening. I do the same thing with 24. I didn’t watch any Oscars……….like you, too involved in the race to care.

  56. dodgereric

You might as well go to sleep, bluesplash! It’s 2AM in Florida.

I manage to catch it now and then. You’re right, I’m a little lost in it. But like I told your kids, I’m still 16 inside and retained my weakness for superheroes! But if Heroes doesn’t start getting somewhere, what I’m going to lose is interest.

kahli (assuming Manny signs) my lineup would be:

    Furcal SS
    Hudson 2B
Ethier RF (you’re right about batting Manny third, but I sure liked Andre hitting in front of him last year and want to try out Hudson in the 2-hole for a while)
    Ramirez LF
    Loney 1B
    Kemp CF
    Martin C
DeWitt 3B (I can’t help it, he won me over last year. Casey rides my bench unless DeWitt loses the job)

Unfortunately, Joe’s team will probably be:

    Furcal
    Hudson
    Ethier
    Ramirez
    Blake
    Loney
    Kemp
    Martin

Still not bad though, huh? I think you can interchange them up and down the lineup without a whole lot of difference.

  57. nellyjune

…so you will let me know if Heroes is worth the watch this summer? Dodge16 loves it!!! As far as superhero shows, I really enjoyed Smallville until they kept jerking around the times after a while, then I kind of lost track of it when it was on. I really liked watching to see how Lex turned out evil.

Considering that second year player option that Boras “insisted on”, I’d be really surprised if Mike doesn’t win my 31K (I just checked). He’s on the clock until 2AM Friday, right?

  59. nellyjune

Well, I am glad you are paying out. For some reason shepherd thought it was me. He said I was good for it with UOMes. I told him all I had was a buffalo nickel and I wasn’t giving it up 🙂 LOL!!!!!!

  62. nellyjune

How DY, Repko and Paul will fair in all the outfield drama. The scary thing is I would rather any of those guys in left field over JP right now.

  63. colliethec

Eric — I agree. I’d bat Dre 3 & Manny 4. Just for the start and se how it goes. If there were issues, I’d switch it around.

According to Dylan Hernandez, Manny hasn’t accepted the offer yet (as of 4:40 am pst), and that there’s “one other club” he’s negociating with. Who – the Hiroshima Carp?

Since Frank ‘И’ Furter have piddled away every other option that was out there, just give the guy 2 years guaranteed at $25 per and be done with it. Its worth it not to have JP dragging the offense down with him the next two years.

Good Morning ITD readers and writers!!!!

enchanted – how did you do your ‘N’ backwards? Oh, by the way, this Manny issue is really getting old. Maybe he knows ITD has a pool going and he knows who he wants to win. That’s how much we really know about what is going on.

    Good Morning Dodger4life!!!!!

  70. perumike

Eric, you sound like a government official! My winnings would turn into a debt of $0.60!! Well, the IRS can hunt me down, but I won’t pay! 🙂

  71. Dodger4life

Good morning Nelly, Tru and Enchanted and every and anyone else in the loop this morning 🙂
    .
Life is good today and I believe in Manny!!!!!!!!!
    .
    GO DODGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  72. nellyjune

…just in case perumike, have your piano waiting. We are going to need at least a Baby Grand if Manny doesn’t sign. I think a Baby Grand ought to do the trick…………..he is a little guy 🙂

  73. colliethec

Tru — That was my initial thought. But if they turned down a $25 mil for 1 year a few weeks ago why would they accept what is really essentially the same thing.
    .
I do think there is another team that has interest. Whether they have enough to put down the $$$ we’ll see.

  74. Dodger4life

    WE LOVE YA MANNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  75. enchantedbeaver

    Nells – AИcient Chinese secret.

If there is another team interested, why haven’t they made a real play? They’ve known where the Dodgers have stood since the first offer months ago so there’s no real need to lurk in the background waiting for what? Probably just a Borass ploy trying to save face or get a second year guaranteed at more than $20M.

If they don’t sign Manny, I just don’t understand how Idiot Joe could proclaim JPs the LFer without any competition for the spot whatsoever, especially after seeing what he didn’t do last season.

  76. enchantedbeaver

Manny LF = 1st in West
JP LF = 3rd in West
Anyone Else LF = 2nd in West

The anyone else could’ve been any number of decent FA OFers that are no longer available, which probably could’ve pushed it back up to 1st place. As it stands now, anyone else would be DY, Repko, or Paul.

  77. dodgereric

    1) – There is no other team.
    2) – He’s taking the offer because there is no other team AND,
    3) – Boras read my post on January 1 @ 11:22AM

We signed Doug Eyechart to ensure that DeWitt plays 2B every day in Albuquerque to get ready for 2010 when Hudson leaves for NY.

    IMHO.

Does this guy come with a nickname? Because, I for one, will have a hard time typing Minkeiwitcz all season long. See my problem? How about “Minty Fresh”?

I had to click something to get on the audio so I missed Martin’s HR.
    Go DODGERS!!!!!!!!!
I can only listen until 5:00PM ET, I have be somewhere else at 6:00PM ET.

  83. oldbrooklynfan

Waiting for word on Manny, It looks like something should happen today, sometime, the way I see it.
I don’t see this offer changing and it looks good for both sides.
Maybe more money could be added.

  84. oldbrooklynfan

They say that the 2nd year, 2010 was setup by Boras, so if there is a holdup, it looks like it’s Manny that’s holding it up, since the Dodgers are in agreement.

  85. alex41592

Spring Training Update: Top 1: Matt Cain Pitching:
    Rafael Furcal grounds to second
Orlando Hudson flies foul to left
Russell Martin HOMERS to left, 1-0 Dodgers
    Mark Loretta grounds to first
    1 run 1 hit 0 LOB End of 1/2 inning 1-0 Dodgers

  86. northstateblues

JoePierre, yeah, sounds like Boras doesn’t have a problem with the contract. I know a lot of talk has been said/written about Boras pulling the strings (myself included), but from the report, since Boras tinkered with it, I would guess from here on out, Manny will be calling more of the shots. Boras probably just wants to get something back for his investment.

  87. alex41592

  90. northstateblues

    Thanks for coming, Alex!

To fill in the Radio experience (since the Dodgers aren’t broadcasting the game), Charley Steiner stopped in for an inning with Jon Miller… the most interesting thing happened at the end of the interview in the top of the 2nd:

Miller: Well, I think you’d better get back to your side and see if there’s any Manny Ramirez updates

Steiner: I think I have a tuna sandwich waiting. :: both chuckle ::

You can’t make this stuff up 😀

  91. selltheteam

Looks like perumike still has a chance at the Manny sweepstakes, but Manny better hurry up. Using closest time, perumike is on the clock until 2:00 am tonight (early tomorrow morning). Then shepard is on the clock. Or it could drag on….
