Who's coming with me?

Sitting at LAX, ready to head to Camelback Ranch – Glendale. Hard to believe it’s here, but I can’t wait to see the place. It’s changed dramatically since I was there in November.

Be sure to keep checking back regularly for updates as well as watching the Inside Dodgertown webisodes that are on dodgers.com (if you’ve disabled autoplay on your home page, you have to make sure to click on it to watch them). The video group from the Dodgers has been doing some great work on a daily basis and there will be new video from Arizona daily.

Meanwhile, if I hadn’t booked my flight a month ago, I would have hopped on the Lasorda bus, which departed from Dodger Stadium this morning at 10 a.m. They’ve got to be closing in on Arizona by now even with their stop for six-dollar burgers at Carl’s Jr. and a gas fill-up at 76 (got to plug our sponsors, right?). I can only imagine the stories being told on that bus but keep an eye out for updates on KABC from Josh Suchon all day long; a story on dodgers.com from Rhett Bollinger, who is riding along; reports on KCAL with Gary Miller; and a column by the Daily News’ Ramona Shelburne. I’m sure Tommy will post a blog about the trip, too.

Tomorrow there will be tons of coverage from Arizona, as Joe Torre will meet with the media around 2 p.m. and Inside Dodgertown is hoping to catch with him first thing in the morning before the entire baseball operations staff sits down together for the first time this spring.

Could not sign on yesterday to join the conversation as to why Beimel is still unsigned. Some things just don’t make much (dollars) and sence.

Having had the good fortune of listening to Tommy Lasorda talk baseball for about three hours at Dodger Fantasy Camp some years ago I can only imagine what it would be like riding a bus with him to Arizona. Of course at Dodger Camp there was no media around so he could talk, oh how should I put it; freely.

  2. enchantedbeaver

I’ve always thought of Biemel as a couple of bad pitches away from being Scott Proctor, but then you turn around and he has put up three decent years in a row. He’s durable too, which I think will be quite valuable especially in this year’s pen because none of the starters are going to go deep with any consistancy. I’d take him over Reyes, so go ahead Ned, resign Biemel – you’ve got my blessing. 🙂

  3. enchantedbeaver

He made $2M something last year and he was obviously seeking substantially more. He says he’s had offers, but evidently all were bargain basement type. At this point I would think that if they matched last year’s salary he’d sign for a year. But when guys like Abreu sign for $5M, a situational lefthander really shouldn’t command more than $1.5 tops.

  4. trublu4ever

Now I read that the Rockies were interested but decided to go in a different direction. They were unable to reach him but are keeping in touch with his agent.

  5. lbirken@aol.com

I read those reports as well. Obviously we don’t know all the facts but it does seem as if many of this year’s crop of free agents over valued themselves. I suppose Beimel still has the option of taking a lesser deal and I too do not have a problem with him resigning with the Dodgers.

I wish I was on that bus to Arizona!!! Do I ever wish.
    Good evening ITD.
Hi my friends: Nellyjune, Dodgereric, Dodger4life, Cpompe1, Crz, trublu
I saw that bus on Channel 9 news today while I was at the hospital with my Dad and was excited. It was the same bus that arrived at Canter’s!!! So Spring Training is here. I have been looking forward to this day since last season ended. Talk about having an empty feeling!
As I have mentioned before, I have two blogs which I just started a couple of days ago. The first one has my pictures but no one has been able to post. It is kind of a fun blog so everyone is welcome to check it out. I will be posting my pictures throughout the season on it, including ST. The address is http://catlovesthedodgers.blogspot.com. The other one you can post on. Everyone is welcome to post but please nothing profane. The problem is that I can’t post pictures directly on it. It actually looks like ITD. The address is http://catlovesthedodgers.mlblogs.com.

I believe the thought process with Beimel is that they already have Kuo in the bully and Elbert or possibly Stults or even Miller can fill the #2 LHRP role. In reality, there really is no reason to pay the #2 LHRP a substantial amount because there really are internal options as well as guys that will more likely be let go in ST that could fill that role well. Remember, that was how Beimel essentially started his career with the Dodgers. I am a big Beimel fan, but in this case, I can understand the thought process behind not resigning him for the $$$ he is looking for at this point in time.

  9. 636566cy

Josh – Once the Dodgers start charging ticket prices that match the events in Arizona (you know, Spring Training games that count for absolutely nothing), then I will be making the trip to McRanch. In the meantime, I will make my annual trip to Arizona and watch the team play the D-Backs in the stadium formerly known as the BOB for substantially less money for games that actually matter. You can tell Frankie Baby I said that too:)

  10. nellyjune

Good Evening ITD readers and writers!!!!

So, by not showing names, do they think this will slow this group down…..I think not. ITD is 2nd only to the Blogosphere which is designed for all teams. I am thinking most of us are pretty good about talking to ourselves, and some are far better than others at it 🙂 I really don’t have much to add other than I am still very frustrated about Andre’s situation. However, I am excited about spring training getting underway soon.

  11. nellyjune

I guess so……… LOL!!!!! I must have some magic touch. Too bad this magic touch can’t get Andre’s contract taken care of and this Manny issue taken care of as well.

Good evening to one and all. Just saw Frank’s interview on mlb’s homepage with the usual “We want Manny back” stuff. SO DO IT, ALREADY!!!!!THIS HAS GONE ON AND ON AND ON AND ON!!!!!! With the start of ST tomorrow, this situation will only continue to fester….Haven’t heard anything on a potential Andre signing. Unfortunately, it looks like this will go to the hearing on the 17th……I’m ok with a Hudson signing if it means keeping DeWitt and sending the Garden Gnome to Antiques Roadshow, ebay, or wherever Garden Gnomes go to die. If they deal DeWitt,we will be losing a long-term, solid, homegrown player. Trading DeWitt belies management’s professed philosophy of building from within.

  14. nellyjune

Hey dodger4life!!! Keep that spirit flowing!!!!

brownpaperrapper – Andre’s hearing looks to be inevitable at this point to me. Unless something is done tomorrow, you have a three day weekend and his hearing is next Tuesday……there really isn’t much time to get this thing settled.

nelly–taking the arbitrator’s decisions this spring into account, I think Andre will get his asking price. It’s unfortunate that management doesn’t value his large contribution to the D’s success. Just another example of management mishandling of an exceptional player.

  17. nellyjune

brownpaperrapper – I understand that Andre is not “homegrown”, but they do consider him part of the young core, and it goes back to what you were saying about DeWitt. It goes against their professed philosophy as making sure their young core is taken care of. And to a point I could see if they numbers were million of dollars off, but we are talking one million (and most are thinking halfway would have done the trick), the same price they are paying some of these recent acquisitions just to try out for the big club.

  18. nellyjune

I guess alot of people were having a hard time signing on and something was wrong with the side bar stuff. I came on and it all came back to normal.

  19. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

nelly–I think Andre should’ve gotten as much as Russell recieved. I’d like to see the D’s follow the pattern of the mid-90’s Indians and lock up their young core players with lucrative, long-term deals. As you may recall, those Indian teams of that era were pretty sucessful….I will be a DeWitt fan regardless of whom he plays for. You have to root for a guy who doesn’t have any one superior skill but is strong in all areas and has an exceptional work ethic. He’s already a potential Gold Glover at 2 positions, and, once he settles in at one position, will be an above average hitter, say, in the .280 to .300 range.

  20. nellyjune

…….Like I told Dodger4life, if I had the Midas Touch, Andre’s contract issue would be solved and Manny would be a Dodger.

  21. nellyjune

I think DeWitt is the real deal. I don’t think we want him playing for the competition. Same for Andre. I don’t want to see him playing for the competition either. If your ultimate goal is to keep the core young guns, then they would be making a mistake by trading DeWitt and not settling with Andre before a hearing.

  22. northstateblues

    Ouch.

Dodgers are striking out in Arizona

The Dodgers anticipated a financial windfall by moving their preseason home from Vero Beach to Phoenix, but so far it hasn’t worked out that way.
    By Dylan Hernandez

    8:10 PM PST, February 12, 2009

Reporting from Phoenix — The Dodgers anticipated a financial windfall by moving their preseason home from Vero Beach, Fla. to Arizona, thousands of miles closer to the vast majority of their fans and to a sparkling new training complex expected to attract the attention of deep-pocketed corporate sponsorship.

It hasn’t worked out that way.

The Dodgers, who open camp Saturday, had a goal of selling 4,000 season tickets for spring training but will probably sell about half of that, chief operating officer Dennis Mannion said.

    And those corporate sponsors?

    They’re staying away, too.

“The economy is a huge, huge factor right now,” Mannion said.

The Dodgers and White Sox, who share the facility equally, were so excited about their new home’s potential as a revenue producer that they ignored the proven spring training model of seeking local advertisers and instead focused their efforts on finding national sponsors.

The concept — called “The Starting 9” — was designed to allow nine major sponsors paying $200,000 annually to secure the naming rights for different parts of the facility.

And to make those packages even more attractive, opportunities for fantasy camps or corporate outings were included.

So far, the sales force is 0 for nine in selling them.

Mannion said he didn’t anticipate that all of them would be sold before spring training — some advertisers, he assumed, would want to see the facility in use before agreeing to that kind of deal.

But he didn’t expect to be batting .000, either.

“I was hoping we would have four of the nine sold,” he said.

The Dodgers and White Sox have secured around $700,000 in lower-level sponsorship deals that cost anywhere from $5,000-$75,000, Mannion said, with another major deal in the works.

As for home spring training games, which start later this month, tickets are priced from $18-$100 per seat, with berm seating from $8-$10 depending on the game.

Recently signed pitcher Randy Wolf said this week that he would like to see the Dodgers lower ticket prices so that fans impacted by the nation’s economic problems could still afford to attend games.

Mannion said that the Dodgers, who had about 500 season-ticket holders in Vero Beach last year, aren’t looking at cutting prices. But he noted that they have started offering more flexible ticket packages, including one-week and two-game plans.

“Baseball to me is America’s game,” said Wolf, who took a big pay cut himself when the Houston Astros pulled back a three-year, $28.5-million offer prompting him to later agree to the Dodgers’ one-year, $5-million deal.

“Americans are losing jobs. They’re not spending money, obviously, because they don’t know what their next paycheck will be.

“People want an escape still. They still want to get out of their daily grinds and have something to root for.”

  23. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

Amen, nelly. As most of us do, I have a real problem with the disconnect between management’s stated policy of building from within and it’s contradicting actions. For example, this idea of a “fluid” roster going into the season. Management is gambling on another “Manny Miracle” in July or, possibly, even earlier. Unless a trade involves a complete salary dump, an impact player is going to empty out your farm system of quality prospects. So much for building from within!!

  24. nellyjune

nsblues – that is a big OUCH!!! ….and probably an “I told you so” from some of our bloggers who were ready to go until they saw the ticket prices.

  25. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

Due to the economy, individual discretionary spending has virtually disappeared and businesses are discriminating in all their purchases.Apparently, Manny and Borass have been under a rock the past 6 months.

  26. northstateblues

For me, I’d really like to be able to catch a game or two (or 10) there, but location and cost make it virtually impossible for me right now, and I’m sure the same can be said for many, even in SoCal.

To me, it’s not a big deal, since Dodgers ST games are now close enough to be an option instead of a car payment. I just would’ve hoped that if I did make the drive, that I’d be able to pay a fair price for 1-3 innings of Big League ball, and 6-8 of Minor League Ball. I can spend less than half the money, and make the 450 mile trek to Dodger Stadium and see the real deal in a good seat for $18.

This report just shows that the economy is going to be a bigger factor than most would’ve thought. I hope for Baseball’s sake the Post A-Rod Steroid Era won’t cut further into attendance, as the Post-94 Strike Era saw.

Regardless, the show must go on…

(speaking of which: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBOvOatPqnY , can’t resist a Queen reference, I’ll have to find a way to fit in a Zeppelin reference in a later post, heheh)

  27. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

I think that most people who have been turned off baseball by the steriod issue have already made that decision so I don’t think you will see any attendance dropoff on that score. Whatever dropoff will be because of the economy.

  28. nellyjune

brownpaperrapper – they haven’t done anything all of this off season that tells me they are focusing on the youth. It started out all about Manny, then it moved to Dunn and Abreu and only now that they aren’t sure of Manny and have lost Abreu and Dunn to other teams are they beginning to say we will rely on our young core. They aren’t giving us any hard proof that is what they are doing. Everything they have said, and done, is skeptical at best.

  29. nellyjune

nsblues – living up here, I am in the same boat you are. If I am going to make the drive, why not pay the same price to see the real deal at Dodger Stadium.

  30. Dodger4life

  31. 636566cy

Josh – It seems that the story by Dylan Hernanez contradicts your post earlier in January about all of the conversations about McRanch being about the fan experience. Or maybe Dennis Mannion isn’t privy to those conversations.

It is pretty amazing to me that he is dumbfounded as to why things are going well from a revenue stream standpoint. Randy Wolf seems to get it, so why doesn’t the front office? The tickets are too expensive for practice games, and many fans that have gone to Arizona during the regular season to see the Boys in Blue play the Snakes will continue to do that instead of going to ST. The tickets are cheaper, hotel rooms are cheaper and more plentiful and the games actually count.

I have said all along this was about lining Frank’s pockets and Dylan Hernandez’s story clearly illustrates the point. Frank reaps what he sows:)

  32. 636566cy

Josh – BTW, when are Frank and Jaime going to have the Town Hall meeting with us regular Joe’s? Other team owners do it, why don’t the McCourts? I mean, they love publicity and imagine the publicity they would get if they actually didn’t charge people to come to a gathering such as this? Of course, the fans would hold them accountable for their responses and they would demand real responses instead of the standard “we are trying to do everything in our power”. So Josh, just post the date on the blog and I’m sure their will be a huge turnout. I’m sure the media would be there to take down the responses of the Power Couple and take plenty of pictures too. It sounds like a win-win to me.

  33. northstateblues

And even though I wasn’t alive, from what I’ve read of the man, I doubt Walter O’Malley would be waiting for his close-up as much as the current ownership has.

From what I’ve read, he did his talking behind the scenes, and you can’t really argue with the results.

3 playoff appearances in 5 years is great, but once upon a time, that wasn’t enough for the great franchise atop the hill at Chavez Ravine.

If you don’t think big and keep going old… well… ask Neddy’s old boss how well that has worked out…

But what do I know, I’m just a simple Californie bumpkin.

  34. Dodger4life

Once again, I live in Utah and don’t get all the news about the McCourts, but 3 out of 5 in the playoffs is outstanding. In the 50 years in LA the Dodgers have only been able to accomplish the same feat one other time: 1963, 65, 66. I understand we haven’t made the World Series, but we only made the playoffs 2 times in the previous 16 years.

  36. trublu4ever

Good morning dishguy – it’s har to focus this early in the morning, isn’t it? LOL The coffee will kick in soon! I really do wish the McCourt’s would sell the team to somebody who cares about baseball.

    This management totally SUCKS!
I’ve maintained that for a long time, of course.
I will add that Torre has my total disrespect as well. It would be great to have a trophy manager who has some guts to require the GM and the ownership to take some serious action to improve the team, and that would include taking care of Andre, who was the best performer on the field for the entire 2008 season. But the guy is truly just a trophy manager without a spine and more interested in his book coverage than starting the season strong.

  39. enchantedbeaver

I’m not shedding any tears for McRanch not being the cash cow Frank & Jamie expected. Is it really that they wanted ST closer to L.A. for the fans?, or is it that they knew at Vero that they couldn’t sell naming rights to different aspects of the facility for fear of erasing tradition (read that as bad PR)?

I also don’t care which side gets burned with Manny either. Frank ‘И’ Nonesense have painted themselves in a corner to where its Manny or nothing (which obviously it always has been.) Nice to see greed is alive and well even in this economy.

And the one guy who’s earned his money both on and off the field, looks like they’ll let that go to arbitration.

I love the kids, and I’ll support PVLs “Я” Us, but Frank’s ill equipped to own a team, Ned’s ill equipped to run it, and Joe’s ill equipped to manage it.

  40. trublu4ever

bpb – good morning. I knew from the beginning the ST idea would be a bust. The fans they expected to attend can go to a real game at Dodger Stadium for less money. I’ve heard this morning that Manny will probably be offered a 3-year deal. And, I hope Andre wins his case, as he should, and put those jerks in their place!

  41. Dodger4life

    Good morning bpb….
    .
Who’s logo will you be sporting this year????
    .
Any advertising dollars been thrown your way, yet???

  42. scurtis1999

I don’t blame the people for not buying spring training tickets. If I wanted to watch minor league baseball, I’d go to a minor league game. Sign MANNY and we won’t have that damn problem!

  43. nellyjune

Good Morning ITD readers and writers!!!!

messagebear and bpb – I really hung on to hope that the Dodgers would step up and take care of the one player on the field who went through the most adversity on the field. Who was continually jerked in and out of the line up to give chances over and over to Andruw and allow the so-called speed in JP to materialize which never happened. That was June, then you go into July where he finally gets playing time due to JP and Andruw being on the DL, finally gets in some playing time. Then August roles around and you have Manny show up and Andre sits again for a week thinking that perhaps Andruw will be better now. Meanwhile, during the entire season, he is the ultimate professional, never saying anything about playing time and completely being about the team, including giving back to the community. All this and this is how he is paid back by sending him to arbitration over a difference of a million dollars, which the Dodgers have spent more in “the maybe they will make it to the big team” acquisitions. If this goes to arbitration, he will leave when he can and so will the rest of the young core when they can. You take the best all-around ball player last season and screw him, expect to be screwed yourself.

sigh 🙂 ……..I am a little peeved by this whole situation to say the least.

    ~DODGER BLUE THRU AND THRU~
    ****ETHIERAHOLIC FOREVER****

  44. dodgereric

    Gooooood morning, ITD!!!!

dish, sorry bro but I can’t agree with just making the playoffs 3 years in 5 being “outstanding”. I would classify that as “decent” as best or “doesn’t suck”. Winning the Series 3 times in 5 would certainly qualify, but not just making the playoffs. We’re not the Giants.

Bear, as usual, you are outstanding. And along with his being the best player on and off the field last year you have to add that he was the best “team player” as well by taking the disrespect from Torre like a MAN.

bpb, as usual, you are not only outstanding but inventive as well!

And you have to love rotoworld’s comment on Manny’s postponement yesterday:

“Ramirez was supposed to be taught how to play cricket as part of the satellite television provider’s promotion of the new CricketTicket service, which would have allowed agent Scott Boras to claim that a whole new set of teams have interest in his client.”
    http://www.rotoworld.com/content/home_MLB.aspx

  45. messagebear@msn.com

That saying should be a classic, bpb!

“Frank’s ill equipped to own a team, Ned’s ill equipped to run it, and Joe’s ill equipped to manage it.”

It is hard to be with a franchise where you love the team, but absolutely wish nothing but the worst to the owner/management group. SELL THE TEAM, or better yet GO BANKRUPT, you worthless Power Couple!!!

  46. scurtis1999

Playing cricket will be more interesting then watching this offense if Juan Pierre is playing left field and not MANNY!

  47. enchantedbeaver

    Pierre ≠ Manny
    Pierre = Noodle

I read an article that “Plan B” is going with Noodles in left, and that if the kids don’t perform they’ll go to “Plan C” which is acquiring another OFer during the season. My question is, what do they do when JP doesn’t perform because he’s already proven he can’t.

  48. trublu4ever

Ned: Frank, I can’t get Manny to sign….boo-hoo
    .
Frank: Come on big guy, you can do it, just use your charming personality.
    .
    Ned: Huh, I don’t think I have a personality.
    .
Frank: Well, then, just go sign some players so the fans think we are doing a good job.
    .
Ned: I think I can handle that!
    .
Frank: I have to take care of Andre.
    .
Ned: Oh, I forgot, I thought we already had done that.
    .
Frank: Me, too. Oh, well, I’ve had other important things on my mind and completely forgot about him.
    .
Ned: We make a great team, don’t we, Frank?!!

    Ethier hit ..335 .409 .583 .991
    Kemp hit .299 .344 .478 .821
after the all star break. They are fine with hopefully Kemp getting better…..Pierre has an OBP of .327 before Manny and the three prior of .326 and .330 and .331 after Manny it was .327..thats the weak link, even if Ethier or Kemp don’t step up one bit and “improve”

You pout Kemp or Ethier in place of Pierre (clone one of them, either one) and were better..You uprage that to manny and it’s not close.

The diff between 2008 martin, kemp etc vs 2009 improved martin, kemp etc..vs the difference between Manny vs JP is huge.

HeartRus, Can’t view anything on your blog. I created one about 6 monthgs ago but have not done anything with it. when I get a chance, I’ll post a couple of pics there. I only took two at Canters. Two with Loney 🙂 but I have a lot that I’ve taken thru a couple of seasons. Still up in the air what days I will make it to Glendale.
    .
If I don’t get a chance tomorrow, happy Valentines days everyone! Love is Blue! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_2qty7GptU

  52. nellyjune

………he has turned his back on the Dodgers IMO. Anybody who is asking to be traded because he is not happy being a team player is the one turning his back on his team. He is seeing himself as more important than the team itself. And if he can’t see that he was outplayed in every aspect of the game last year by Andre and except his new role as bench player than he, and anybody who puts him on the field as a Dodger at this point, has totally lost their minds. If we don’t get Manny then at least let DY, Repko and JP “really” compete for the job. Last year’s competition was a joke…..it was an Opening Day competition and then it was back to let’s play the pvl instead.

No Juan’s gonna cure our will
We’ve got a bad case of Manny blues

  54. enchantedbeaver

Somebody needs to tell Mr. Torre that he’s now employed by the Dodgers. If he’d like to go back to the Yankees I’ll gladly chip in a Jackson towards a plane ticket.

  55. enchantedbeaver

I think what Andre will be learning is that when he becomes a free agent, there’s 29 other teams he’d rather play for.

  56. nellyjune

I think so bpb………and what makes it worse is it sounds like they have not communicated with him at all, which I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

  57. enchantedbeaver

Doesn’t sound like Frank communicates at all unless you’re a real estate agent, and Ned’s obviously doing such a stellar job in the Manny negociations and hiring PVLs that he doesn’t have time to talk to statistically the best player on last years team.

Fire Ned Frank, then sell the team.

  58. northstateblues

Aww, you’re being too hard on the guy, bpb. I’m sure if you’re holding a proffesional video camera and a lighting rig, he’ll be happy to talk!

  59. lbirken@aol.com

Too much Manny, Joe Frank & Ned on the brain if you ask me. And too much worring about garden gnomes. One should not have to worry about garden gnomes.

  60. enchantedbeaver

“Ramirez wants a deal of at least four years in length at a salary in the Alex Rodriguez, $27.5 million-per-year neighborhood.”

For a 37 year old ballplayer, that’s rediculous, absurd and obscene in this or any economy. Screw Boras, pay Dre, and let’s move on.

  61. Dodger4life

If that is true bpb, I say, have a nice spring with your wife and kid’s Manny.

Time to go on with our buisness, where we oh yeah the owners.

Frank I’m gonna help ya out with the starting 9. We put you and Jamie on a couple of Burro’s, Starting in Malibu and have you ride them to Camelback, to show people how easy this can be done…..We can have Corona sponsor the event. It can become a new tradition. For $100 you can have your picture taken with Jamie and the two jack ***es, while sipping a Corona in the player friendly confide’s of McCheap Ranch.. Montery burroto’s will be on hand to serve lunch for the festivities, served with Pace picante sauce. That fills out 1,2,3, in the lin-up….

    Hello ITD
Sorry about the problem with my blogs. I couldn’t even get onto my them. Please try again. http://catlovesthedodgers.blogspot.com and http://catlovesthedodgers.mlblogs.com. Feel free to post. I had problems posting my Andre picture on the MLB blog. I made a bit of a booboo and couldn’ t retract it. The blog should start out with “What..” It starts out….a day.” Oh, the trials and tribulations of a novice at work.
    Thanks Mark for the post.
    Cpompe1…where are you?
    Nellyjune…I hope everything is okay
    I love you Dodgereric, Dodgers4life.
Back to work tonight. Pitchers and catchers reported today. I hope they post pictures on the website. How exciting. The Manny fiasco and the horrible Andre arbitration stuff is sure putting a damper on everything. I am still looking forward to ST. Let all of this be behind us!!! Everyone look at my blogs!!!

  63. dishguy

Fellow Dodgers fans ~ I’m sorry to interupt this hate party, but I will have to be the lone contrarian. I have few problems, and actually like most of what they have done since buying “My” Dodgers. They have been a gigantic upgrade over the previous foxy owners and have mostly failed in their attempts to appease fans with the high priced FA’s. I’m sorry…

  64. heartruss

sorry, to get on the mlblogs site, I think you have to log in first to the blog site. Once you get there, if you like 🙂 put it on your favorites so you can get there easier…
Why do they make it so difficult?? Just go on the mlblog site and just plug in catlovesthedodgers and it will put you there.

  65. lbirken@aol.com

Dishguy, don’t be sorry. I agree with all their faults the McCourts are a huge upgrade over Fox. It just seems the McCourts try too hard to be accepted as celebrity owners of one of the gems of major league baseball and I guess a lot of us expect more real baseball stuff and less fluff.

  67. heartruss

Dishguy, hope this doesn’t post twice. I posted it a few minutes ago and it disappeared. All of us are Dodger fans. We are just frustrated about Manny not being signed yet and Andre having to go through arbitration. I think we are just eagerly waiting for baseball season to start. Is anyone else having problems posting? Maybe it’s the weather!!! We Californians just don’t know how to deal with rain!! I’m obsessing about getting to work without getting drenched!!
How is everyone else dealing with the weather? Nellyjune is it still raining in Merced?

  68. heartruss

I know this doesn’t have anything to do with the Dodgers, but that New York commuter plane crash sure hit close to home. I flew to Newark (where the plane crashed) in Novemeber a week before Thanksgiving. I fly there about twice a year. Joe Pierre, what is going on with the commuter planes in New York???

  69. Dodger4life

Good evening heartruss, I am getting snow soon. I am sick of the snow 😦
    .
    GO DODGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  70. dishguy

heartruss ~ I understand the frustration with Andre, but he is under the control of the Dodgers for a couple more years and even if it goes to arbitration the pain will fade away. I would much prefer a longterm extension, or at least a compromise one year deal to avoid arbitration, but it isn’t as big a deal to me as it is to most of you. Then again I’ve never met him, although I have loved the interviews I’ve seen and the “Before the Bigs” piece on PT.
As for Manny, I like the fact the Dodgers appear as if they will not do a 3 or 4 year contract for an aging power hitter in a new steroid-testing era. Even at $25M for 1 year or $45M for 2 years it would be overpaying in respect to the current market, I would still offer those. I actually would offer $46 so his annual salary would exceed Texeira’s and the two years of options he would have gotten with Boston. If he is still holding out for 4/$100M, thanks for the memories Manny. I still think a deal with the Yankees for Nady is a possibility as some point during ST if Manny stays away; which I wouldn’t mind if we didn’t have to give up to much in return.

  71. trublu4ever

Earlier in the day, I was joking around pretending to be Ned and Frank. I was mentioning Andre, and that they had forgetten he was on the team………….well, it looks like i was right. They were so busy running around signing meaningless players, they didn’t have the common courtesy to speak with Andre. So much for taking care of your young core of players, Frank! I am way beyond being miffed…..I am so angry right now, I can hardly see straight!

  72. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

Good evening, all ITD’ers!!!! I hope noone has had as much difficulty logging on tonight as I have. 45 minutes!!!!
dishguy–I understand that you’re from Ogden. I’m from SLC and knouffbrock, another ITD fellow traveler, is from Moab. No need to apologize for your opinions. Airing our points of view is what it’s all about here and they are all respected. I can’t speak for others but my disagreements with the McCourts don’t fall into the category of “hate”. I just take issue with their priorities as owners of the Dodgers. I’d like to see a little less profile and a lot more concern with putting a sucessful ballclub on the field. I, too, have never met Andre Ethier and am not a professed “Ethieraholic” but I do believe that he is a cornerstone of this team and should be viewed as such by management. If it were solely a matter of the arbitration hearing, I would probably agree with you but it goes deeper than that. His performance on the field has not always corresponded to his level of playing time and, regardless of his playing time (or lack of it), he has always exhibited a class attitude concerning his circumstances. As for Manny, I would go for any contract configuration lasting no more than 3 years. Anybody who deals with the Yankees will pay dearly so I doubt that Nady is an option. So, if there is no Manny, we are relegated to Plans B or C. A “Manny Miracle” is not likely at any time next season and , I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to see Juan Pierre in LF on Opening Day,2009.

  73. dishguy

bpr ~ I do live in the Ogden area. I guess we’re going to get more snow in the morning.
It’s been reported that the Yankees need to get rid of one of their outfielders and speculation is that Nady is available, but his salary isn’t a bargain anymore. But our need in LF is so great we may pay the salary, as we will save greatly if we don’t sign #99. He makes almost $7M and is a FA at the end of the year. My guess is if we pay his salary we wouldn’t have to give up much of a prospect…

  74. trublu4ever

bpr ~ I don’t know how management can not feel obligated to pay Andre what he deserves………if they don’t take care of their so called young core now, they will all leave and we will be stuck with a bunch of old worn out ballplayers.

  75. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

dishguy–we’re supposed to be getting some snow tonight as well……as long as the transaction is strictly a salary dump, I could live with a Nady deal in lieu of Manny. The fact that he is a free agent-to-be would make it even more vital that we don’t give up anyone of significance.

  76. ew314

It’s amazing – almost no one in Dodgers Nation has any confidence in Kershaw, Billingsley,Kemp, Ethier, Loney, DeWitt, Martin, and the rest – it’s all “MANNY” or Nothing.

Setting my opinion that the front office leaves a lot to be desired aside, it’s time to face it: MANNY IS NOT COMING BACK!!!!! Manny Ramirez is part of the past now. He knows he’s welcome in Los Angeles and if he does come – good, we’ll welcome him with open arms. But it’s time to move on. Much luck to him whatever he does – but we’re moving on.

  77. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

tru–I don’t understand why management has treated Russell and Andre completely differently. They made a strong effort to sign Russell but they don’t seem to care in Andre’s case. They’re both key elements of this team. I hope their attitude doesn’t come back to bite us down the road.

  78. trublu4ever

bpr ~ I think Andre is too easy going and even with the way they are treating him now, he still takes it in stride and says he will play hard no matter what.

  79. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

tru– Andre doesn’t have much choice but to take it in stride. Until he attains free agency status, management holds all the cards.

  80. bluecrewgirl

Trublu, how are you doing? I couldn’t agree with you more about Andre. It’s so frustrating the way they continually disrespect him no matter what his accomplishments are. I think it’s pathetic that they haven’t even made an honest and fair attempt to come to an agreement with him before his hearing. It blows my mind that they haven’t even contacted his agent. He should never be going to arbitration. With what he contributed last season, they should have made a deal with him right from the get go like they did with Russ. I love Russ and am glad he got signed, but Andre should be treated the same. Freaking unbelievable.

  81. trublu4ever

bluecrewgirl ~ I know, it is unbelievable how they are dealing with Andre. Other than being frustrated, I’m doing just fine. And, you?

  82. bluecrewgirl

I’m doing good trublu. Can’t wait for the season to start. I will be on vacation from work next week, so I am definitely looking forward to that.

Brownpaperrapper, were you formerly brownpaperbag (enchanted), or are you someone else? I can’t keep up with the names, lol.

  83. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

you nailed it, dishguy, but it doesn’t say why they moved the game….bluecrew, how are you. A tip of the ITD flask to you!!!

  84. bluecrewgirl

Thanks for clarifying trublu. I wasn’t sure. In that case, Hey brownpaperrapper. Hope you are doing well and taking care of the flask.

  85. dishguy

I know I’m an optimist, but I’m really looking forward to the early reports on how Schmidt is throwing. The article says he thinks he’s ready to go.

  86. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

I’m doing well, thanks, bluecrew. The flask is primed and ready for another sucessful Dodger season. Names may change but the passion lives on forever.

  87. trublu4ever

We sure do have passion for our Dodgers. If we didn’t, why would we be so upset at the way some things are handled?

  88. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

After the last 2 years, we’ll take anything we can get from Schmidt. Maybe, just maybe, we’ll catch lightning in a bottle.

  89. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

tru– my emotions bounce back and forth from resignation to frustration: resignation stemming from the realization that I can’t control Dodger things and frustration at those same events.

  90. trublu4ever

I know what you mean, bpr. I got spoiled when Tommy was manager and it was fun to see the season develop. I loved his fiery attitude and his never give up attitude.

  91. enchantedbeaver

They’re onto something with Troncoso as a starter. He had a real nice line in 3-4 starts in the DWL. If that’s their intention with him now it would behoove him to start the year in Alb and build up some innings. Could be an interesting rotation in 2010 with Bills, Kersh, Kuroda, McDonald and Troncoso.

  92. dishguy

I read an interesting stat this morning where last season each team averaged 10.5 different starters. So the stock-piling of vets hopefully will help down the line.

  93. bluecrewgirl

Dishguy, were you someone else before, or have you always been dishguy? I agree that all we can do is hope about Schmidt. I just hope he doesn’t end up being another Dreifort.

  94. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

tru–It’s these unresolved issues left over from the offseason that’s gotten some of us worked up. I’d like nothing better than to be only talking about the upcoming season and experiencing the anticipation that all baseball fans feel with the start of ST.

  95. trublu4ever

bpr ~ I feel exactly the same. Usually when it’s time for ST I’m really excitied. Now, I just don’t know what to expect.

  96. bluecrewgirl

Completely agree bpr. I don’t understand why they just can’t take care of the business they need to like signing Andre and hopefully Manny too and then let’s move onto the season.

  97. trublu4ever

bpb ~ I think it would help if Joe knew who were the players on his team. it took him half of the season to realize Andre was there.

  98. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

It will be interesting to see how this pitching cattle call plays itself out. Just like casting roles in a play. Hopefully, the D’s aren’t casting solely a tragedy or a comedy.

  99. bluecrewgirl

I’m actually hoping Weaver can make a contribution. I always kind of liked him when he played for the Dodgers before.

  100. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

I know what you mean about Torre, tru. Last year, sometimes I wondered if he was actually breathing on the top step of the dugout.

  101. enchantedbeaver

Tru – They played with that same apathy Joe shows all year until Manny showed up. They all played tight knot knowing if they we’re getting yanked the next game.

  102. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

bpb–they had 3 in 1974 with 30 or more–Sutton with 40, Messersmith with 39, and Rau with 35. You’ll never see that again.

  103. rintinjim310@yahoo.com

All Andre has to do to get his price is to offer Frank an option on his house in Phoenix and on the lot next door.

  104. bluecrewgirl

bpb, if Joe bats him behind Raffy I am going to scream. I hope we sign Manny and trade JP, but if we have to go with him, I agree he should be in the bottom of the lineup.

  105. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

The only way we can bat Pierre 10th is if the NL institutes the position of “Rover”. At least, then, we could be assured that his throws would reach the plate.

  106. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

LMAO, bpb!!!!…..those 1974 D’s stats are a real relic from a different age; Marshall appearing in 106 games, throwing 208 innings, and only 21 saves.

  107. cpompe1

Good late evening ITD boys and girls!
I know, I know, it’s been quite a while since the last time I signed on. I’ve just been so busy that I’ve barely had time to read. No, unfortunately “…been so busy…” doesn’t mean that I have a job. I don’t. But it’s just been tough to spend any kind of quality time here on ITD. I miss all of you so much when I’m away for any length of time.

So, I still see that there’s no news on Manny. What gets me more than that is that article about Andre. He’s sounding like he’s resigning himself that he’s going to have to go thru the arbitration hearing. That just burns me up. But I’m hopeful that a last second deal will happen to avoid the hearing. But if it does go to an arbitration hearing, I just hope and pray that Andre comes thru the experience okay. Even after him being jerked in and out of the lineup, I believe that he’s tough enough to not let it affect his play on the field.

So how are my ITD friends??? Remember, don’t forget your Valentines tomorrow!!!

  108. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

Those 4 had 20 or more starts in the strike-shortened World Championship season of 1981. A full season would’ve gotten them to 30.

  109. enchantedbeaver

Had to dig, but here’s the last time 5 starters each had at least 30 starts. I’d have never come up with this crew:

    1993
    Orel Hershiser 33
    John Candiotti 33
    Keven Gross 33
    Ramon Martinez 32
    Pedro Astacio 31

  110. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

I know what you mean, bpb. I would’ve never guessed that group or that recent a year. I was looking earlier.

  111. cpompe1

Hey bluecrewgirl!!! Yeah, I know. Long time no see!!! I HAD to sign on tonight. It’s been too long for me – I need my ITD fix!!! I’m doing fine. This cold snap is doing numbers on my shoulder, but my shoulder is okay for the most part. I am still doing my due diligence and still looking for a job. I tested for the US Census Bureau – got 27 out of 28 questions right!!! It was a piece of cake. We’ll just see what happens next.

Hey BPB!!! I’m being lazy by not scrolling up, but what are you trying to find with the list of old Dodger pitchers???

  112. enchantedbeaver

CP – Just the last time the D’s had 5 consistent starters all year long. They got close 2-3 other years, but I went back to ’78 and that was the only time.

More often than not in the 5 man rotation era, that 5th spot HAS been a cattle call.

  113. bluecrewgirl

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you CP. I know the perfect job is just around the corner. Hey bpb, how have you been? Is it cold in New Mexico now?

  114. cpompe1

    Thx bluecrewgirl!!!

Okay bpb, got it. Unfortunately, it has been quite a long time since the Dodgers had five consistent starters all year long. It would be nice to get back to the days where the Dodgers have five consistent starters. It’s been way too long since then.

  115. enchantedbeaver

BCG – not really down here in the south. It’ll get down to 31°-32° at night, but back into the high 50s low 60s in the daytime. Our weather patterns here are different than all points north of Socorro.

  116. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

In Utah in February, daytime highs in the 40’s are above normal. Tonight, we’re expecting snow. Count your blessings.

  117. bluecrewgirl

Me too, CP! I’ve lived in cold weather before, but not in a long time and my blood has thinned. I’m even sick of the rainy weather we’re having even though I know we need it.

  118. cpompe1

Sorry bpr. I’m a wimp and I know it. I don’t mean to sound insensitive to practically everyone else here that has to deal with weather much colder than I do. I guess I just don’t do well when it comes to weather extremes – hot or cold. So how are you bpr???

  119. enchantedbeaver

I was up in Salt Lake last year sky – can’t remember if it was May or early June. I do remember high-tailing it out of town to avoid a potential snowstorm though.

  120. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

Not bad, cp. My family in Michigan has it much worse than I do, weather-wise, so, I, too, count my blessings. Listening to the O’Jays “LIving for The Weekend’ on my mp3 and hoping all this off-season stuff gets resolved and we can start thinking only about on-the-field matters.

  121. cpompe1

Ya know bluecrewgirl, I just have to look at my husband. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley. For the longest time I couldn’t stand and still can’t stand the heat in the summer. That’s why I live by the coast; doesn’t get too hot, doesn’t get too cold. But my husband grew up in Northern Iowa (about 30 minutes south of the MN border). But he’s lived in CA for close to 25 years now. When he goes back to IA to visit, he can’t stand their summers (very hot and very humid). I guess after a while, you get used to the weather. I just can’t see me getting used to extreme hot or extreme cold anymore!!!

  122. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

Freak snowfalls have been known to happen at that time of year, bpb. If you don’t like the weather, wait 10 minutes. The Wasatch Mountains do strange things to weather fronts here.

  123. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

Then, again, 90-plus degree days in the summertime in Salt Lake City are normal. You get the real extremes here.

  124. enchantedbeaver

Fortunately in the summer here an extreme day is 104°. We’ll hit a hundred frequently but summers are when we get our rain, so if you can make it past June which is just plain hot, its not too bad. I’m just glad its not like Phoenix.

  125. brownpaperrapper@comcast.net

Good night, bpb, and Happy Valentine’s day to you.
cp-great song. God, Bruce is so young in that video. That’s got to be 25 years ago. Makes me feel old.

  126. heartruss

    Good evening ITD,
I have been lucky enough to have spoken to Andre a few times. He is a very levelheaded young man. I found him to be extremely patient even during the time that he had to sit on the bench much of the time. He knew that his time would come. He is smart enough not to say anything that will come right back at him later. I always told him that all of us on ITD support him so I think that’s what keeps him going, knowing that he has many fans. He also seems very centered. He is thinking about his future. I know he loves his baby very much. I actually have a picture of Andre with his baby taken when the baby was just a couple of months old. His family is number one which is probably why this arbitration is so important. It’s too bad that management can’t see how valuable Andre is. However, Andre will get past this being a professional. Let’s all just keep supporting him. I know that when I see him next which will be at ST I will tell him again that we all love and support him. 🙂

  127. bluecrewgirl

Thanks for sharing heartruss. I hope they do right by him. He deserves it.

I think I am going to call it a night too. Goodnight everyone. Talk to you all soon.

For those of you who have the MLB Network they are showing the 2006 miracle game against the Padres at 5:30 PM Sunday night.

Where the Hell is Manny? I’m not going to subscribe to MLB.TV until Manny shows up is a Dodger uniform. My new Dell HD 24″ monitor is ordered. Now just waiting for Manny to sign. Lets go DODGERS. All the way in 09……………………………

Good morning all, pitchers and catchers, what could be better? This is the start of spring…I do not care what the groundhog says!!!

I am sorry to hear Kevin Kennedy is leaving the Dodgers Fox set, I enjoy listening to him…He is also great on MLB radio…

Lets get Manny signed and lets split the difference with this Ethier guy, not really sure who he is, Nelly can you fill me in please!!!! Andre is the epitome of a team player…when he was screwed last year in ST and the beginning of the year, he did not pout…He worked hard and when it was time to play he siezed the moment….So Ned and Frank do not mess with his psyche…Get him signed before the hearing!!!

As for the positive info on Schmidt, I would rather nothing be said than to get my hopes up…How realistic is it to depend on a 36-37 year old coming off of major shoulder injury and has not pitched in almost 2 years…If he does, great, if not, just go away!!!

I would love to see Troncoso seize the 5th spot..I thought he pitched well for the Dodgers last year and he has a power sinker…He had a good winter league…intriguing….

Good morning and Happy Valentine’s Day to all. I was hoping for some good news this week but, unless something drastic happends today or tomorrow, it will turn out to be another wasted week. I resent the way Frank and Ned have handled this off-season. I reset the way Frank has no interest in taking care of the loyal Dodger fans.I resent the way we were lied to about wanting to keep the young nucleus together. And, most of all I resent the terrible way Andre has been treated.
