Counting down…

Several people are already there and I head out on Thursday. Physicals for pitchers and catchers are on Friday and the first workout is Saturday.

I know I’ve been talking a lot about Camelback Ranch so I’ll let someone else do the talking. This is from today’s Arizona Republic.

trublu, a lot of venom on Smith’s blog. Wow. I’m afraid the joker polluting the deck in the Manny saga is “the agent.” Compromise seems to be a 10-letter word for “the agent.”

  3. trublu4ever

kahli ~ I had a feeling from the beginning, Boras was the culprit. Smith is a die hard Yankee fan and he wanted them to sign Manny in the worst way, even after they had spent all the money on CC and Tex.

  4. enchantedbeaver

POLL TIME: Which NRI(s) will make the staff?

    (A) Huggy Bear
    (B) Dennis Weaver
    (C) Milton The Toaster
    (D) Yawn Estes
    (E) Someone Ned hasn’t thought of yet

  5. nellyjune

bpb – I knew you would find delight in that signing – LMAO!!!!!! I might have to go with E for now. I don’t think it will make a bit of difference if we don’t get left field taken care of and Andre signed and ready to go next week.

  6. enchantedbeaver

I don’t know Tru – 12 spots and only 9 that are locks. 2 should be’s unless they want Troncoso to start at Albuquerque to build up arm strength, and Elbert to get more innings in. Stults maybe makes it if they don’t keep Elbert. At lease one NRI will get a spot.

  7. kpookiemon

I’ll take A and D. Now if we play Jeopardy, the “answer” must be in the form of a question???!?!?! So here’s the answer: The Dodgers’ unsung, came-out-of-nowhere hero for the 2009 season. Players, please make sure you respond in the form of a question…

  8. kpookiemon

“The Dodgers’ unsung, came-out-of-nowhere hero for the 2009 season. OK contestants, please make sure your response in the form of a question, no matter how lame and ungrammatical it may be. Player #1, your ‘answer’ please. ‘Where is the Dodger Dogs?’ No sorry…and you wagered it all. Too bad. Player #2. ‘What is Juan Pierre?’ No, sorry, great guess though, and a relevant ‘question.’ But you’re a loser, as well. And now the defending champion. Player #3, your answer, please. ‘Why is the guy who blackmailed Boras with lewd photos?’ CORRECT! And you get to come back next week…”

  9. enchantedbeaver

Besides Martinez, what oft injured washed-up PVL hasn’t Ned signed yet? – could be the sleeper “E” pick.

  10. nellyjune

I thought the Nationals wanted Glavine. Maybe not what we need, but he would be like Maddux….an excellent mentor to the young core of pitchers. Boy, if that happened, Jill would flip – LOL!!!!

  11. nellyjune

Considering in her baseball room (which is beautiful BTW), she has one wall that is all A’s, one wall all Braves and one wall for just players….Glavine being the most prominent. Glavine being a Dodger would just freak her out – LOL!!! She never thought Maddux would come back and look what happened 🙂

  12. brunelli@caltech.edu

I say give Manny a 5 year contract with each year worth $20+MM, but only make the first two years guaranteed. Make the 3rd year guaranteed if in the 1st year he achieves some benchmark(s) (e.g. fewer than 3 “Manny being Manny” moments during the season). The 4th year becomes guaranteed during the 2nd year; the 5th season guaranteed during the 3rd season . If Manny doesn’t reach the benchmark his 1st season, he will be motivated to play better his 2nd so that he can sign a contract the next year. The last years of the contract, Manny should be motivated to reach career milestones (ie 700 HRs). Does that work Mr. Colletti and Mr. and Mrs. McCourt?

  13. enchantedbeaver

At some point brunelli if Frank REALLY wants Manny and vise-versa, they’ll need to reach some sort of a compromise like you propose, though maybe only 4 years.

    And welcome to ITD!!

  14. kpookiemon

Here’s a creative contract. Dodgers give Manny 4 years, $100 million– but include a list of “Manny being Manny” benchmarks. For each of these transgressions, Boras kicks back $100,000 to the Dodgers. Transgressions could be as simple as failure to run out a ground ball…failure to catch a can-of-corn pop fly…all the way to faking injuries, not suiting up, and orchestrating his exit from L.A., ala the Boston blueprint. What say, Scott? You believe in your client, don’t you? Safe bet, right? Just read the cute little brochure you prepared for all the GMs out there.

  15. trublu4ever

kahli ~ Sounds like a great plan to me. I’m sure BorASS would jump right in and accept the offer, don’t you?

  16. brunelli@caltech.edu

    Thanks for the welcome.

I do think that this type of contract would appeal to both sides. (Mr.) Manny gets his years and money (Pay the Man(ny)!!). Mr. Colletti and Mr. and Mrs. McCourt get an opt out clause in case of bad performance or behavior (which is essentially what they want in only offering a two year deal).

This would be my offer from the Dodgers perspective (possibly starting with only 4 years instead of 5, as mentioned above).

  17. kpookiemon

Let me clarify one crucial point of my contract proposal. Manny is GUARANTEED the $100 million. The “trangression fees” comes straight from Boras’ own wallet back to the Dodgers..

  18. enchantedbeaver

If they do sign Manny, as much as Ethier flourished hitting in front of him, I’d drop Manny back to clean-up and have Kemp hit in the 3 hole in front of him. Think you could easily see 25-30 HR from Matt in that scenario. That way too you could have Loney hit 5 and Blake hit 6 or 7 where he belongs.

  19. trublu4ever

Sounds like a good lineup, bpbGM, you just have to get dodgereric/manager to agree. You know how stubborn managers can be!

Good Night bpb!!!! May you have sweet enchanted dreams. I think my goal until your bag comes off is to find a way to get your name into a post everyday. I miss writing enchanted……….because it is such an enchanting name for a person who is so enchanting himself. Take Care and see you in the morning ITD talk.

  22. jungar@wsgcorp.com

So the dodgers have decided that Manny is worth 20 million more than Abreau? You guys know I love Manny but..that seems crazy! or fishy.

    now batting 2nd…number 9….left fielder. juan…..pierre.

  23. jungar@wsgcorp.com

No reason not to wait Manny out. If we wanted other players we would have gotten them by now right? It’s Manny or Pierre.

Good Morning ITD readers and writers!!!!!!

2 Days, 1 hour until pitchers and catchers report 🙂
6 Days until Andre’s arbitration hearing – still nothing 😦
Juan Pierre is our current Left fielder 😦

  26. perumike

Good morning everyone!!! Let’s hope we have some good news soon on Manny and Dre as the free agent outfielders are dropping fast. SportsCenter says Abreu is signing with the Anaheim Angels.

  27. enchantedbeaver

Guess its official now – Abreu’s an Angel. 1 year, $5 mil.

That pretty much leaves Dunn and Anderson as the only other bats besides Manny. My fear is that Ned will procrastinate the Manny situation until there is no one left standing in LF but Pierre.

  28. trublu4ever

Anderson has BorASS for his agent! We better get Manny because I don’t want to hear, “Now batting 2nd, Juan Pierre” !!!!

  29. perumike

I would much prefer to watch ESPN and see one of those Hot Stove Breaking News reports saying we have traded the Noodle for a batboy. 🙂

  30. crzblue2

Buenos Dias ITD boys & girls!
A beautiful day today. When I left home it was 32 degrees but is a nice sunny day.
    .
    Heart,
I do plan on going to Az but I am waiting on my friends to make up their mind on the dates. Is making me nervous. By this time I already had everything planned for my Vero Beach trips. When are you there? Where are you staying? Maybe I’ll make two trips, one alone and one with my friends. I have cousins in Glendale. my crzblue signon is with yahoo.
    .
I think soon we will hear that Manny signed with us. what other options does he or the Dodgers have?

  33. shad78

Geez Angels first Gary Matthew to a big contact than Hunterto a big contract which he deserve than Rivera a 3 yrs deal and now Abreu. The Angels doesn’t need another OF.

  34. enchantedbeaver

I saw that article that had Pierre batting 8th. Obviously the writer chose to follow common sense.

JoJo on the other hand will bat him 2nd.

  35. nellyjune

….that and he has to get on base first. That was the problem last year…………………….pop ups, ground balls, and he did a lousy job bunting last season too.

  36. enchantedbeaver

I think at this point we should all take a step back and learn from history.

We have nothing to fear, but Ned himself.

  37. enchantedbeaver

Can’t fallback on Abreu and Dunn anymore. Boras knows now its Manny or nothing.

Ned has Boras right where Boras wants him.

  38. enchantedbeaver

Hey I read an article that said Schmidt will be at full strength this spring.

I also read in that same article that DY is complaining his elbow still hasn’t healed and that it bothers him hitting lefthanded.

  39. 636566cy

I hope all those who do go to McRanch have a nice time this spring. I will not be partaking, but I look forward to reports from the fans on their impressions.

  40. kpookiemon

    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ..has Manny signed anywhere yet?…ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  41. heartruss

Hi Crz, I’m planning on going to the games on Mar 5 and 7, possibly the 4th depending on whether my room is ready or not. When are you planning on going?

  42. trublu4ever

He came close to signing with the Rockies and now the poor guy has nowhere to go. I liked him and think he could be good for us.

  43. heartruss

Trublu, I always liked Joe Beimel. I hope he does return. I was so upset when he became a free agent. They were depending on Ebert being his replacement but I don’t think he is ready. I know Russell will be happy to have him back. They were good friends last year.
Nellyjune…are you feeling better? You have to be better for the first day of Spring Training!!
    Dodgereric and Dodger4life…how is everything?
Cpompe1..please check in. How is your shoulder and your job search?? Is the weather bothering you?
Crz..will you share your pictures of Canter’s with us. I know you got some good shots.
Hope everyone in Southern California is surviving this rain.
Now that Dunn and Abreu are gone, sign Manny and get it over with.

  44. kpookiemon

The only thing wrong with Beimal is Joe went anti-Proctor and didn’t pitch him enough. Stats say 12 less games, 18 less innings. His ERA was only 2…but the rap was inherited runners scoring. He also walked nearly as many as the year before…in less innings. I felt all year he struggled with his “feel.” Pitchers need to pitch…especially situational lefties. I like Beimal. He’s got grit, stays healthy, and he’s a weirdo! He’s a nice compliment to Kuo, who’s more of a start-the-inning kind of guy. You want Elbert or Stults with the game on the line in the 7th or 8th facing a bad-*** lefty?

  45. dishguy

    Good evening all~~~Manny’s options are….are….is…
I still wouldn’t guarantee him anything beyond 2 years with out getting him to waive his no-trade for year 3 or 4.
Weaver says he is trying out for the bullpen…
I’m all for retaining Beimal, now that his price is right. I would prefer him over Reyes.

2 days until we see the sights and sounds of gloves popping. 🙂

  46. colliethec

    Hello there ITD’ers!
    .
Nelly–It sounds as if you’re sick? I’m sorry if I passed it to you!
    .
Just a thought… Does anyone else think that maybe part of the Manny deal would of been for us to also sign Weaver? Just as a nod to BorASS. Hmmm…
    .
On a somber note, sad news today about Robby Alomar. I hadn’t heard he was HIV+ before today. Nor that he now has full blown AIDS. I always loved watching him and Omar Visquel while they played together in Cleveland.
    .
Welcome Brunelli! Great idea and good thinking out of the box. However I doubt BorASS would agree to that.
    .
    Go Blue!!!

  47. trublu4ever

Hi dishguy & kahli – I think now that our two back-up options for not signing Manny are gone……….Man-ram will be a Dodger by the end of the week. Am I dreaming, or will this really happen?

  48. trublu4ever

dcollins – how are you feeling? That ITD virus has really spread………..nellyjune is much better today, though. I’m sitting here with my surgical mask on hoping I will escape the bug! lol

    .
    Are you guys going south?

  50. trublu4ever

nellyjune & her daughter are. I once had an illness like yours……..hung on for a very long time and couldn’t shake it. It really was just some kind of virus and you just have to let it runs its course.

  51. nellyjune

Good Evening ITD readers and writers!!!!

dcollins – I am doing much better today, pretty much back to normal. Thanks for asking 🙂 My normal routine is once I get any sort of sign, I start downing Airborne as much as I can. Then a co-worker recommended some medicine, and it was pretty much gone by this morning – a total of about 24-36 hours.

  52. kpookiemon

You’d think the Dodgers would like Manny for ALL of Spring Training. Player bonding and all that stuff. “No one is bigger than the team” type rhetoric. Last week Boras backpedaled (after saying Manny would have a contract by Spring Training) by saying that he considered Spring Training when games began. Whatever. Call it Borasspeak. The L.A. Times said tonight, “At this point…the Dodgers have already won the negotiation. They can almost assuredly ink Manny for a shorter duration at a lower price than they could have pictured in October. Don’t slow play the pocket aces and risk getting sucked out on the river. Assuming it’s still the goal, find a decent face-saving offer for Boras and Manny, make the bet, and take down the pot. It’s not worth trying to squeeze a little extra out of the proceedings…”

  64. ramslover

Good morning everyone…it is sunny and beautiful in Dallas today…I tink it will be in the 70s….Pitchers and catchers report tomorrow…This is the best time of the year….

Manny, we need you and want you…You gave us hope last year, when the team was floundering and Andre, Kemp, and the rest really responded…Your legacy as a champion and to help people forget what happened last year in Boston, will be cemented in history, by leading the Dodgers to the promised land!!!! Go over Borass and get the contract done with the Dodgers…

One of the great things about this winter is that the contracts are incentive loaded…except for the big guns…I hope that this will be as it should be from here on out…That way the team and us as fans do not get stuck with the walk year superstar…If you do not perform you do not get paid!!!!

    Lets go Dodgers!!!

  65. trublu4ever

Good morning ITD – I hope today is the day we can finally be happy………….signing Andre and Manny would be great.

  66. dodgereric

Gooooood morning, ITD!!! And good morning, rams and tru!

It’s cool this morning in Temecula, but nowhere near the below freezing early morning Tuesday when the doors to my truck were frozen shut. We’re supposed to hit 58 today.

Manny, pick up the phone and ask Ned for a one-year, $28 million deal. You’ll probably get it and it’s in your best interest. Have a good year and you’ll prime the pump for a nice healthy 3-4 year deal next season from an AL team to finish out your career.

Tru and Junie, did you see this?

  72. nellyjune

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/dodgerthoughts/2009/02/2009-dodger-ope.html
    …………………………………………………
Andre Ethier, OF: As I noted in September, Ethier’s second-half success wasn’t the result of seeing only fastballs down the middle while batting in front of Manny Ramirez — instead, he was hitting everything while also taking plenty of pitches off the plate. The guy now has more than 1,500 plate appearances with a career .846 OPS and 116 OPS+; however streaky he is, it’s time he got credit where credit is due. A year ago, some pretty important people doubted whether he should be an everyday player. Those days should be done. He slumps, he surges: He’s a major-league hitter.
    …………………………………………………………..

Frank, please give Andre his money. He has earned every penny.

  73. trublu4ever

Rah, Rah – Andre, Andre, he’s our man…..if anybody can do it, Andre can! Gooooo Andre, Gooooo Andre!
    .
PAY ANDRE THE MONEY HE DESERVES, FRANK !!!!!!

  74. nellyjune

Did you notice to the right, the list of the salaries, they have Andre at a salary*$3,200,000. If he gets that, our core young guns (Martin, Loney, Kemp, Ethier) still won’t make as much as Juan Pierre this year.

  75. dodgereric

When the air is absolutely still, even the slightest breeze is welcome……

“Top Dodgers executives recently huddled at a swanky beachside retreat south of L.A. And it’ll be interesting to see what new strategy they came up with.

Bobby Abreu and Adam Dunn coming off the board could slightly hurt the Dodgers’ leverage in trying to re-sign Manny Ramirez. But the reality is, as good as Abreu and Dunn are, they never seemed like much leverage against the franchise-saving savant himself, anyway.

Some close to Dodgers owner Frank McCourt say he isn’t completely opposed to doing nothing and instead waiting for the trade deadline, apparently in hopes of a second straight July miracle. So in other words, Ramirez’s Dodgers heroics may be working against him.

However, most in the know seem to still believe McCourt will bend on Manny and go to three years. While Manny may not quite pay for himself, the impact on ticket sales and the L.A. market was huge. So he is the one rare megastar McCourt could ever really consider.”

Good Afternoon ITD readers and writers!!!!

Great article dodgereric/Ward Dear – things will get mighty interesting for sure.

  79. enchantedbeaver

I read an article that said Hudson is the one that contacted the Dodgers. Makes more sense than the club contacting him. No reason for the D’s to go after Hudson at this point in time unless they reach[ed] a total impasse with Manny and would then have to play musical positions to put Blake in left.

  80. trublu4ever

bpb ~ I think that is what they were planning. Either moving DeWitt to AAA or as you say, put him at third and Casey in left. If they are thinking of putting Blake in left, the Garden Gnome must be on his way out!!!
