YEA! My little Blakey is coming back. I am happy for him. Same solid lineup for our boys. Let’s get a Win for Maddux tonight–oh yeah, and for the entire team and it’s fans!!!

    Welcome back, DeWitt!

    From last thread:

scurtis, I hear that, at this rate, my hair will be going from Beimel to Lowe to Schmidt in no time flat with another few seasons like this, heh.

  4. selltheteam

Can we deactivate Torre and put in Bowa as the interim manager? That ought to shake things up a bit. . .

  5. vl4ecc

Glad to hear Dewitt is back! I guess he’ll fill in when Kent gets his occasional day off, or pinch hitting. Who knows for sure.

  6. northstateblues

Crash, yeah, maybe Joe just needs a vacation for a while… he’d come back peppy like in that State Farm/Allstate/whatever insurance commercial he did.

I’d say give Tommy a crack at another week, but I wouldn’t want him to die of a heart attack or anything, God forbid. Plus, I bet he knows a few curse words that none of the Kids know, that would shock ’em into a winning streak!

  7. tradejuanpypaperbag

Congratulations to Blake De Witt for making it back, and I am glad to see Joe is sticking with the lineup.
    .
Dodgersrule and fogeylinks ~ I thought of the poodle skirt thing too. How funny is that!!!
    .
enchanted ~ I am very impressed with the Go Go’s song – FANTASTIC !!!

  8. brandondaughrity@hotmail.com

Have you guys ever heard of any of the Padres pitchers lately? They’re actually doing an admirable job for guys I have never heard of. Nice lineup today, good decision to bring Dewitt back early, we can use his bat

  9. chingon28

BRING BACK GRADY LITTLE! I’M SURE HE IS STILL ON THE PAYROLL ANYWAY AFTER THE WAY THAT JOE PUSHED HIM OUT THE BACK DOOR THERE HAD TO BE SOME SORT OF SETTLEMENT. I ACTUALLY THINK THE DODGERS STILL HOLD AN OPTION ON ’09. NOW IS THE TIME TO PICK IT UP.

  10. amyw27

ching- Grady Little doesn’t want to manage. He said so himself. He said his heart was no longer in it, and that he shouldn’ve taken the job with the Dodgers in the first place.
So, he’s probably not the guy we want on our side right now.
    .
I don’t think Joe is bad. I still believe that all the kinks haven’t worked themselves out yet. But what I do know is that we need to win big and win now!!
    .
    GO Dodgers!!

  11. vl4ecc

Just caught a glimpse of PTI on ESPN with Wilbon, and Kornholer. Wilbon says if he was Torre, he’d make everyone grow their hair, not cut it till the end of the season, and fine, or suspend anyone getting caught.

    Boy what a knee slapper..Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  12. vl4ecc

crash I find it difficult to root for other teams in our division. Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad the Pads are giving us some help with the Snakes. Bottom line is, this team needs a wakeup call! I hope they break out of this scoring funk in a HUGE way tonight.

  13. brandondaughrity@hotmail.com

Well, doesnt look like today we will have the chance to gain a game…. If we lose today, we’re in BIG trouble.

  14. brandondaughrity@hotmail.com

Jody Gerut could be a possible comeback player of the year option for the Padres, guy is playing great baseball all year so far.

  15. cpompe1

Good afternoon ITD boys and girls,
It’s great! Blake DeWitt is back!!! Now, I really have to take care on calling a player Blake; am I talking about Blake DeWitt or Casey Blake??? Either way, I’m thrilled that he’s back.

No offense vl4ecc, but crash, I like the updates on the snakes. My main goal is to have the Dodgers get into first place. I don’t necessarily “root” for the other teams in our division, but if their loss or win will help us get into first place, then so be it. Don’t look now, but going into today’s games, the Rox are only 3 games behind the Dodgers. They are taking advantage of the last few games where both teams have been scuffling.

  16. trublu4ever

I’m also glad that Joe is sticking with this lineup. If we make it to the playoffs, these are the guys who will have to do it. With DeWitt in there too sometimes would be a plus.

  17. vl4ecc

cpomp It looking like Deja vu all over again from last year around this time boiling down to a three team race in the division. I just hope it’s a more favorable outcome for the boys in blue. Looks like the Phillies got some momentum after sweeping the Dodgers. That was a helluva comeback win over the Mets last night – 7 runs. And I thought the Dodgers bullpen had problems…….

  18. cpompe1

Yes vl4ecc; it is starting to look like Deja vu. I just hope and pray that it’s the Dodgers the prevail this year. Because we all know that whoever wins the NL Worst will get in the playoffs. No one from the NL Worst will be wildcards this year. Yeah, and about the Phillies, I heard about last night. I didn’t get to hear all of the details, but it was a big comeback win last night.

  19. brandondaughrity@hotmail.com

Time for the Metallica in San Diego!!!! Come on Hoffman!!! Man, we could sure use to pick up a game tonight!! We better watch out, the Pads have been playing people tough, and we get to play them here pretty soon.

  20. trublu4ever

vl4ecc ~ The race for our division is as you say, shaping up to be quite a battle. Interesting isn’t it that ESPN doesn’t even mention our division at all? I really do believe there is a definite east coast bias. They still talk about the Yankees everyday and they are nearly eliminated.

  21. cpompe1

vl4ecc – I’ve gotta ask you something. What with all of the name changes, I never read. But are you “fairly” new to ITD or are you know by a more familiar name???

  22. cpompe1

“…or are you know by a more familiar name???”

I meant “known” instead of “know.” Did I ever say I hate it when I don’t proofread??? 🙂

  23. vl4ecc

cpompe Agreed. There’s no way the NL west will have a wild card team. Too early to tell now. I’m leaning toward the central. If the Brew crew could put it together – watch out. Can’t count out the Cards either. Larussa does a phenominal job for what he has to work with. Year after year.

  24. porklinks

Andre Ethier became the everyday RF on 8/5. The Dodgers, counting today, have played 22 games from then to now and Juan Pierre has started exactly 4 times. (At that rate over a whole season, that’s 137 starts for AE, 25 starts for JP.)
    .
The four pitchers that Juan Pierre started against were all LH against whom he had had previous success (in mostly very small numbers of PA). His numbers against those pitchers PRIOR to those starts:
    .
    .625 / .625 / .750 / 1.375, 8 PA vs. Lohse
    .500 / .500 / 1.000 / 1.500, 2 PA vs. Hamels
    .500 / .500 / .500 / 1.000, 4 PA vs. Parra
    .481 / .500 / .556 / 1.056, 30 PA vs. Francis
    .
JP went 1-4 against Hamels. When the Dodgers saw him again the other day, Ethier started. Pierre’s numbers against Hamels had dropped to:
    .
    .333 / .333 / .500 / .833, 6 PAs.
    .
So is this the criteria being used by Torre and Co.? Pierre starts only if the pitcher is LH (a disadvantage for Ethier) AND Pierre has a very high success rate (irrespective of sample size) against that pitcher.

Gotta get the victory tonight and go just two games behind the Snakes. Going u against a pitcher whose career record is 32-48 with a WHIP of 1.50
    .
    Go Dodgers!

  26. crzblue2

Woohoo! Padres sweeeeeeeep!!! I have a friend at the stadium that is a Dodger fan and she is staying after the game to watch the Baby Blue boys play the Padres single A team!

  27. vl4ecc

cpompe I used to be known as jjriley22. I’ve been on this blog off & on over the past few years.

Hey Tru! ESPN is all over A-rod today. Boo birds out in NY bigtime. Sutcliff said they could hear the boos from the Bronx all the way over in Queens where ther US open is going on. RIGHT!! He’s in a pretty bad funk. People don’t realize you can’t put up astronomical MVP numbers every year.

  28. cpompe1

vl4ecc – I’m next to convinced that the wildcard is coming from the Central. If that’s the case, whether the Dodgers or the snakes win the West, they’ll play the Cubbies. I know you can’t predict what will happen in the playoffs (remember the Rox last year?) I don’t see either West team beating the Cubbies. They just have too good of a team up and down their roster.

Personally, I think the WS will be the Cubs vs. the Angels. The Rays definitely have a shot to beat the Angels, but since the Angels have been there before – with the same management (in large part) – then I still have to favor the Angels. But again, no one can ever predict what’s going to happen in the playoffs…

  29. trublu4ever

Arizona’s fans have to be feeling a little shell-shocked right about now. So, come on Maddux, make them suffer even more!!!

  30. cpompe1

Okay jjriley22; now I recognize your name!!! I’ve read your posts as vl4ecc and I say, I seem to recognize this guy’s writing!!!

  31. rintinjim310@yahoo.com

Welcome back Mr. D. Witt. I’ve always felt that crowding you with Andy LaRoche was a big mistake. Your stats really went down when they lost confidence in you. In case you haven’t noticed, here are Andy’s stats since he’s has had a chance to play almost every day in Pittsburgh.

    ABS: 64
    BA: 1.25
    OBP: 2.22
    SLG: 2.50
I hope you are here to stay. Good luck.

  32. cpompe1

Unfortunately TruBlue, can you just imagine how the snakes would have felt if the Dodgers had won even one or two of the last several games??? But yeah Maddux, make them suffer even more!!! I was thrilled when the Dodgers reacquired you! Don’t let me down!!! 🙂

  33. trublu4ever

I know what you mean, cpo. I do believe this is when we turn things around. Joe is showing confidence in the youngsters and they will show him he was right!

  34. rintinjim310@yahoo.com

  35. cpompe1

Yeah TruBlue – I’m thrilled that Joe’s been running out the same lineup for a while now. But we all know that the Dodgers seem to have an aversion to getting into first place. I can still remember when we were only 1/2 game out, the snakes lost and we were on the verge of winning and getting into first place outright —————– and then we lost. 😦 But I haven’t given up yet. We have 6 big games against the snakes and this weekend will be very telling for this club. Telling either in a good way, or in a bad way for us Dodgers fans…

  36. porklinks

rintinjim – talk about revisionist history! Torre continued to start DeWitt everyday and kept LaRoche in the minors even while he went through a tremendous slump – how is that “losing confidence in him”?
    .
I suspect LaRoche has chronic injuries that will continue to plague him.
    .
    old_fogey AKA westernmost_in_flavor AKA …

  37. vl4ecc

Tru Either or. It’s all good.

I think one of the best things ever to happen to the Dodgers was the realignment of teams to different divisions. Seems the Braves, and Reds had their number in the old NL west for a while going back. I thought it would be more of a blessing. It just hasn’t worked out that way. I do like the way the playoff format with the wild card though. Definately more excitement in the fall!

  38. trublu4ever

cpo~ It seems as though we get all fired up when we play the Dbacks. I think for the past several years, they have been our true rival — not the Giants!

  39. oldbrooklynfan

There is only one thing to do and that is to just keep on playing and trying and learning and hoping and the results will take care of themselves.
No use giving up until we are mathematically elimainated.
    GO DODGERS!!!!!

  40. cpompe1

JJ/vl4ecc – I’m like you; I like the way the playoff format with the wild card. The only thing I would change is get rid of that stupid, “the winning league of the ASG gets homefield advantage” crap. I think homefield advantage should alternate back/forth like it used to…

  41. selltheteam

PierreEMW – good to see you on the board. Too bad the boys couldn’t get you a victory last night.
    .
Let’s get a couple runs in the first inning!

  42. trublu4ever

jj & cpo ~ I’m with you too. I wish they would do away with inter-league play. All those games could be played in the teams’ own division. I think it would make a better run for the division championship.

  43. cpompe1

Hey crash – How’s my fellow San Buenaventurian??? 🙂 Yes, lets start the momentum now. It would be nice to go into Phoenix with a two game winning streak!!!

TruBlue ~ Yeah, it does seem to be that the snakes have been our true rivals. But don’t tell that to the Pads. I think that the Pads think that they are the Dodgers’ rival whereas I think like you that the snakes are our true rival…

PierreEW – I’ve been on here off and on lately. How are you feeling these days???

  44. vl4ecc

cpompe YES! One of Selig’s bonehead ideas. He should have left well enough alone. I’m against interleague play in the regular season too. Dont’ care for the DH either. Call me a baseball purist I guess.

  45. selltheteam

compe – feeling a little Blue after a five-game losing streak. However, trying to remain optimistic against the lowly Nats.

  46. cpompe1

vl4ecc – That is one of Selig’s bonehead ideas. The ASG is an exhibition game; just leave it at that! I don’t like interleague play and I can’t stand the DH rule…

Hey, speaking of Selig’s bonehead ideas, isn’t replay starting on Friday??? Is everyone here like me; NO INSTANT REPLAY FOR BASEBALL!!!!!! IN ANY FORM!!!!!!!!

  47. amyw27

CP- it’s good to see you back!!! I’m sorry that you are currently on the DL with a shoulder injury. I hope all is well with you 🙂

  48. cpompe1

Yeah crash – it hasn’t been fun being a Dodger fan the last few days. I really hate it when our hitters make the opponent’s pitcher look like Cy Young. It’s the Nats; they’re not that good of a team. At least we have a chance to win the series; we can take that much away from here. But we should have swept; oh well…

  49. rintinjim310@yahoo.com

    Porklink,
I don’t know why they brought LaRoche up to compete with DeWitt. This took valuable playing and learning time away from DeWitt. Andy never proved at any time he could hit major league pitching. DeWitt did that and at one point he had lights out stats when batting with the bases loaded. As far as I am concerned, Andy and Hu still have a lot to prove what it comes to major league pitching.

  50. vl4ecc

About consolidating the MLB umpires….Remember when the NL was known for a smaller strike zone? Now it’s like dealing with Forrest Gump. You never know what your strike is going to be. Some umps have some huge strike zones. Like the size of a Buick. Some don’t. I’m sure the pitchers do their homework more now with who’s behind the plate to know what will work, or not. Prime example for the Dodgers is Lowe. ALOT of umps will not give him low ball strike calls, he elevates, and gets hammered!

  51. cpompe1

Oh, thx Amy! I’m glad that someone remembers from my brief post this morning!!! 🙂 Yeah, I’m back in my painting project, but today I cleaned the carpets so no painting today. But it does remind me that I’ve gotta go back and start putting the furniture back in our living room. Sorry it was short Amy, but I hope to catch up with ya later…

  52. selltheteam

cpompe – Never mind the sweep, never mind the series. Gotta take this one game at a time. Win tonight and we’ll be just two games back.

  53. trublu4ever

jj ~ I know what you mean about the umpires. I’m so tired of hearing the announcers say “it’s his style to call low/high strikes” Style my a**. The strike zone should be by the book! An umpire should not be permitted to have a “style”.

  54. oldbrooklynfan

I’m feeling much better,– cpompe1–, I am presently off the VAC machine but I must be checked out by the Doctor.
The visiting nurses don’t think I need the VAC anymore.
It’s good, this way I can get around better.

  55. vl4ecc

Tru With some of the strike calls I see these days, it would be more appropriate to go to the batters box with a 9 iron. LOL

  56. porklinks

rintimjim – How do you “prove” you can hit in majors without playing in the majors? LaRoche had THREE spot starts before June 24. By then, DeWitt was hitting .196 .264 .247 .511 over the last month. They HAD to start sitting him; they were/are a contender that couldn’t afford to let a kid continue to struggle every day – (then they didn’t play LaRoche regularly either). DeWitt proved that he wasn’t overwhelmed but was still young (he JUST turned 23 one week ago) and didn’t know how to adjust after the pitchers got a book on him. As for bases loaded – talk about small sample size, anything can happen over a set of six PA.

  57. porklinks

OK that it is Maddux gotta go back to San Diego…there is a reason why they were loosing down there and now SD is doing better….thinks that make you say hmmmm?

  61. Padodgers@hotmail.com

Well , I am signing off for the month of August. See you in Septmeber. Prediction… 2nd in Mild West… No playoffs.
But I am not down. Sign Manny and the outfield is set for the future. Kemp will be a major player. If Kent retires, We need to focus on three spots in the infield. That’ huge! Why isn’t Kuo and Park a tamdon team for our stopper? The big guy is not ready yet. But, let’s not give up on him. He just needs to work on pitch selections and the slider, which makes the fast ball that more intimating. What I really like this past month is that they are now competitive. Not powder puffs. Sure, the sweep hurt big time, but that builds character. That are not great, but i luv em

  62. messagebear@msn.com

Maddux will always be a great teacher for the younger guys, but his days of executing on the mound are behind him.

  63. MLBallhawk

Well since Manny joined the team and has helped Kent’s offense … Kent is now returning the favor making Manny’s defense look really good!!

  64. aeversw

It’s time to start hoping for more losses. Hate to say it but the more we lose the more likely we’ll get some real change in this organization. Ned needs to go far far away and so does Joe. At this point I think Joe is a bigger problem then Ned mostly because there is no way he gets canned after this god awful season. The more we lose the more likely Ned is gone and if thats what it takes then so be it. I hope we lose every game from here to the end of the season If that means Ned is gone.

  65. MLBallhawk

In the meantime while you watch the Dodgers give away the game a few more times go check out my MLBlog at http://ballhawk.mlblogs.com If nothing else I have some cool stuff in my online memorabilia store like a 1988 Dodgers Mets NLCS ticket stub!!

  66. ucscslug

$120 payroll, acquire 2 HOFers. Manny and Maddux for 4 total Minor Leaguers, and still 2 games below .500 in late August? I see no reason why Colletti should keep his job. He was dealt a loaded minor league system, very good young players and good contracts, and vast amounts of money to spend on free agents… but what has he produced? one playoff appearance mostly with DePo’s guys. Where is the accountability?

and why would anyone ever think Pierre is a better option to start than Ethier??? Stubborn!

  67. tradejuanpypaperbag

LMAO!!! Just got in and saw enchanted’s comment – 🙂

  68. MLBallhawk

Ned relies on people under him to give him advice and make decisions. Maybe we should look at people like Dejon Watson and some of the scouts! After all they did trade the best hitter in Minor League Baseball away for Casey Blake!! Another great Dodger move!!

  69. tradejuanpypaperbag

I think Andre is tired of getting on base and not being brought in so he decided to get himself in by hitting a home run.

  70. oldbrooklynfan

It would be good to get those HRs when we had all those man on base.
Luck is not a lady to the Dodgers lately

  71. tradejuanpypaperbag

LMAO!!!! enchanted – I think we already have part of the sound track. I believe I did the song “If I Only Had a Brain”, but that was referring to Ned and Joe at the time.

  72. amyw27

you are right. solo homeruns wont get the job done. But tonight is definetly an improvement for our team!! I’m glad we are making plays and hitting- not well enough to dominate- but things are looking up 🙂

  73. kpookiemon

Joe, since the early days of March, you’ve spent nearly six months with this team. Tell me, how do you think they’ve responded to your leadership, people skills, and baseball knowledge?

If we don’t make the playoffs, you would think that he’ll fire Ned, and that would make me feel almost as good as being in the playoffs. Any reasonable person would figure that seeing all of those millions on DL or sitting on the bench, or already departed (like Loaiza) would be reason enough to fire Ned no matter what the final standings. The best way to improve the team for 2009, of course, is to FIRE NED.

  89. tradejuanpypaperbag

This has mostly to do with Ned and Joe. With the exception of the last 3 weeks, it goes back to the beginning of the season when Joe kept jacking up the lineups and insisting on playing PVLs who weren’t doing their job. So, yes, this does fall on Joe. They may not be batting or fielding, but for 3/4 of the season, Joe put bats and gloves into the hands the PVLs who should not have been out there.

  90. aeversw

Exactly Nelly! We shouldn’t be in this position to begin with! Joe played Ned’s washed up pieces of crap he brought in here and it cost us the division. We are playing about as bad as this team can and it will turn around but its too late now. Joe is a bigger problem then Ned in my opinion but he’s not going anywhere.

  91. mccheap

Joe is to busy being Hollywood Joe..someone needs to ligth a firecracker under his as*..maybe that will get him going

  92. kpookiemon

If Joe Torre had worn a disguise all season and gone by the name of Fred Wilson…Fred Wilson would be fired the day after the season ends. Can he look himself in the mirror and say, “Job well done”……?

  93. scurtis1999

Doesnt matter if Ethier plays everyday. We are in a huge slump right now with the rest of the offense. kemp is in a funk and nomar is playing like crap. I can’t wait for them to get back home. This team isn’t good enough to win a WS anyways. Too many holes and injuries.

Sammy and Furcal going down killed our chances.

  94. mccheap

ned signing all those overpaid vets killed our chances if you ask me..wasn’t the guy closing today for the NATS an ex dodger farm guy??

  95. enchantedbeaver

It all goes back to – you can’t fire the whole team. Someone’s got to take the fall for this though. IMO this season’s disaster is 70% on JoJo and 30% on Ned.

    Catch you all later.

  96. trublu4ever

Hi guys ~ I needed a little time to cool off after a terrible loss. (Seem like I’m saying that everday now) I read what all of you had to say and, I agree. I just wonder, what now? Do we still have a chance? Can DeWitt play shortstop? Because Nomar really sucks. And when was the las time Jeff went 0-5? Help me figure this out.

  97. tradejuanpypaperbag

Exactly Max and Grizzly ~ All teams go through this, but we should’ve have been able to go through this and not have to worry about it as much if we had been playing the best all along. Joe refused to do that thinking the PVLs were the safer bet.

  98. aeversw

No scurtis, it does matter if Ethier plays everyday. Losing is tough but losing when you have your best 8 guys on the field everyday is a lot easier to take then having inferior plays on the field all the time and losing.

Nomar is done, call up Hu. We didn’t get to see the real Hu when he was with the team before. You can’t play worse offensively then Nomar is right now and Hu plays a billion times better defense.

  99. mccheap

im out of here guys, have a final tomorrow..last one.ill be done with college atleast with BA..well what else can i say, we’ll get um tomorrow?

  100. northstateblues

it’s a loooooooooong ways to spring, wonder who will be representing us during Winter Meetings…

Luckily, we’re only 3 games back (STILL?!!!). It’s up to them what they do with that.

  101. amyw27

ok ok. I’m back from the gym…and everything is all wrong! I said when I get back there better be a Win.
    .
soooo what the heck happened out there tonight?
    .
    somebody please tell me?!?!

  102. tradejuanpypaperbag

nsblues ~ thinking positive – that’s good! We could be 7 or 8 back right now, but the dbacks don’t seem to want it ethier (either). However, if Dodgers or the dbacks don’t want it, it looks like the Rox might.

  103. tradejuanpypaperbag

Amy ~ I do have to tell you at least Matt and Andre showed their emotional side tonight. Matt was clearly angry after his out in the top of the 8th, and Andre was clearly angry and even said a very bad word after grounding out in the bottom of the 9th. Individually, Andre had a very good night, but you know it doesn’t matter to him if they didn’t win as a team. I refuse to believe he and Matt, along with others don’t care. Those two have come too far this season not to care.

  104. bluecrewgirl

I only caught part of the game in the car and they had it on in the bar at the restaurant I was at, but I could only follow bits and pieces. We have wasted 3 opportunities in a row to gain ground on the DBacks and lost 2 in a row to the freaking Nationals. Andre has done a great job overall batting 2nd, but I personally think we would beneift a lot more from the power he has been hitting for lately with him in the 5 spot behind Manny and Loney could move to 6th. Two doubles were wasted tonight with no men on base. You have to think that if he was hitting after Manny that Manny would have been on base at least one of those times. Ideally, Matt and Andre would both be batting in a position where they could drive in more runs, but I would much rather have Matt leading off than have Pierre in the lineup while Furcal is out. The problem is, with how weak our bottom of the lineup has been, batting 2nd, Matt is pretty much the only one that is a top hitter and gets on base consistently for the guys behind him to drive in. They could move Russ to the 2 spot. I don’t want to see them change the lineup at all, but I would like to see some changes in the order. I’d love to see Dewitt get in there too. I still love that kid and he was red hot when he went back to AAA.

  105. tradejuanpypaperbag

bluecrewgirl ~ I totally agree with you. Even though I like seeing Andre get the extra at-bats. I think right now, he is more of a threat than James. Andre is more patient and can hit for power. He’s ideal in the 2 slot, but I think right now, he needs to behind Manny and be able to bat in whoever has gotten on before him. That way you have his power plus protection for Manny.

  106. juniorvarsity

we arnt going anywhere this season. we should call up dejesus…dude is hitting .322 and is on a tear this month. andrew lambo also got called up from low A to double AA a couple days ago.
let dejesus play short and see if he can handle the position in the bigs, that way we can put dewitt at second. see how that works…if it does then we can get a power hitting third baseman this offseason. if it doesnt work. play dejesus at second and dewitt and third and go after a shortstop. either way next year is looking good. all the major pieces of this “young core” will have another year under their belt and should make a push at going deep in october next year…which will be great cuz ill turn 21 that month :]

  107. tradejuanpypaperbag

I missed Andre’s homerun – 2nd deck shot! Like I said, he was tired of being stranded after his two doubles, and decided to take matters into his own hands. What could’ve been for him if Joe wouldn’t have jerked him around. He could’ve had 20+ homeruns by now and a least half a dozen more doubles. It does make a difference that he didn’t play everyday.

  108. bluecrewgirl

Lol, Max. I was in the restaurant part, not the bar, but I was trying to catch bits of the game. I didn’t partake in any alcohol because I have to be at work at 8:00 and my recovery time’s not what it used to be.

  109. bluecrewgirl

DNelly, I was reading and article tonight that talked about how he would have over 20 home runs and over 80 rbi’s if Torre hadn’t taken 2/3’s or more of the season to realize how much better he is than Pierre or the shell of his former self that Jones has become.

  110. messagebear@msn.com

Yes, Nelly, I think that Torre definitely set back Andre’s development this season the way that he handled him. A good manager does not do that, and Torre just doesn’t handle young players well. He probably would rather not have to handle young players, and that’s why his selection as manager was a nice publicity stunt but not necessarily constructive for our team. No matter where we finish, I’m sure that Torre’s job is not in jeopardy, but he was just terrible over the first half of the season learning this team. I also question whether he’s really got the fire in his belly anymore to build a winning tradition for us. I think he just found a nice place to retire early at full pay.

  111. tradejuanpypaperbag

messagebear ~ I totally agree with you. Joe just doesn’t do anything for me as a fan or as a manager coaching this team. I understand some of the blame could be placed on the players, but to make blanket statements about the Dodgers as a team of players not caring, is just not how I see it. These young players, especially Andre and Matt, have had to deal with so much scrutiny and competition to win a job that many of us felt were there’s from day one. I could never believe that they don’t care about winning. That’s all Andre talked about when asked how he felt about being benched when Manny showed up is he was willing to do whatever it takes for the team to get into the playoffs, and I really don’t think his mindset has changed. (IMO of course)
    .
BTW ~ glad to see your name is still intact 🙂

  112. trublu4ever

messagebear ~ I agree with you that Torre’s job is probably not in jeopardy but, what about Ned’s? And do you think it would really help if he were gone?

  113. northstateblues

dnel, yeah, that purple team just won’t go away. Maybe they’re angry they got screwed last year with that 9-day wait.

Just catching a glance at America’s Got Talent, and they had this mascot act with five animals sports-themed. THere was Snail Earndhart Jr. with a #8 shell (not updated, I guess), a Lizard in a Yankee-esque jersey ( didn’t catch the name), a yellow bird with giant glasses and frazzled grey hair named Harry Canary and last but not least, a goose in a Brooklyn Dodgers-esque jersey named Pee Wee Geese.

A lot more entertaining than those last few innings.

  114. tradejuanpypaperbag

3-1 gnats now. The one other thing bad about the Dodgers playing back east is that I am forced to watch the Giants play. When they are both on at the same time, I can enjoy my game while my family enjoys theirs.

  115. bluecrewgirl

I also think that from what Maddux has shown so far, we would have gotten a lot more starting Stultz, not to mention the money and prospects we would have saved and not trading for him. His road era has been sub par all year and it hasn’t changed with the Dodgers. I was thinking it was a good deal at first, but he has not looked good. I totally respect his career, but I like Stultz and think we would have one at least one out of the 2 that Maddux has pitched with him.

  116. tradejuanpypaperbag

bluecrewgirl ~ I do that all the time. My spelling and grammar have been awful lately. Porklinks thinks he has to watch his grammar and spelling around me, but Why? Mine has been horrible – lol!!!

  117. tradejuanpypaperbag

I think so too. I’m sure the players are stressed, but nobody thinks about us poor fans – LOL!!! The pressure we deal with of having to explain the Dodger losses to friends and family who are Giants fans.

  118. tradejuanpypaperbag

trublue ~ I am already an Ethieraholic. That probably qualifies me as loopy automatically – LOL!!!!

  119. trublu4ever

I know what you’re saying. Dbacks fans have to feel the same way we do — they’re losing to the Padres and they are no better than the Nats. Heard hubby got the building. That’s great!

  120. bluecrewgirl

Lol, trueblue. They could all use some of that luck. They’ve got to get that monkey of their backs and start a winning streak.

  121. tradejuanpypaperbag

Yes, he did, and he’s already been down there working. They had to get a window fixed.
    .
Speaking of dbacks ~ In the classroom, I started my “Ballpark a Week” geography unit, and the first one I had to do was the Arizona Diamondbacks. I am doing them alphabetical by team name. I thought about going backwards, but then that would have been Washington, and not necessarily a better choice. Anyhow, I have a bunch of Dbacks stuff in the classroom, including a poster of Bank One Stadium and a poster of their logo. Also, I have information on Phoenix as a city and Arizona as a state, including maps of both. I thought I might be giving the Dodgers bad luck, but I have had this stuff up since Sunday and we were losing before the posters went up, but maybe it is giving the dbacks the bad luck because they haven’t won since it’s been up – hmmm!! However, I do get to talk about Andre on a daily basis since Phoenix is his hometown so there is definitely a plus side.

  122. trublu4ever

Just read from L.A. Times we can’t get Brian. The Rockies put him on bereavment leave instead of waivers and, if you take him after he gets back, we can’t use him for the playoffs. Also said Andre was one of the players visiting hospital in D.C.

  123. tradejuanpypaperbag

Andre does that every year. He donates his own money to that hospital, also. It’s in his bio… just a great person, indeed.

  124. tradejuanpypaperbag

I haven’t checked that e-mail account. I have three, one dnelly, one dnelson and then there’s school account too. However, I will check. As far as the gang, enchanted checked out early, eric, I believe is working on his fantasy football league, and I am not sure where the rest are.

  125. tradejuanpypaperbag

nevermind ~ Bill told me. Brian’s wife’s family has someone really sick or passed away. That’s too bad.

  126. tradejuanpypaperbag

I am actually looking up more facts about Phoenix and Arizona. I am also playing majong on the computer, and reading my baseball books. I have back to school night tomorrow, and I always run through my speech a thousand times, so I am trying to relax, but it never works. This one is always harder than Open House. Back to School Night is all about procedures, routines and standards, and answering questions and Open House is all about showing off – much more fun and less stressful.

  127. tradejuanpypaperbag

Also Bill and Michael are heading down to LA/USC tomorrow. Michael is going to that prospect camp for the weekend so I have been getting them ready to go as well.

  128. dodgereric

Do you have, like, four arms? Geez!

I got my league figured out. Two of them. No other way, unless I want to part with something like $150. Which I DON’T! I’ll run the playoffs myself on Excel. It’ll work just fine, we’re good. Dodgers aren’t I guess.

  129. tradejuanpypaperbag

As far as my arms, I just alternate between things 5 minutes doing this, 5 minutes doing that. I think I have become good at multi-tasking because I do it all day long at school – teaching math while tie shoes and answering e-mails and phone calls.
    .
I am glad you got your fantasy league worked out. We are drafting tomorrow night for the one I am doing with manfromchina – a full ten teams, which should be good.
    .
As far as the Dodgers – it’s just plain hard. I believe they are trying their best, and it’s just one of those bumps that if things were done differently early on, I don’t think this would be any big deal right now. However, because things weren’t done right at the beginning of the season, now we are trying to play catch up. The scary thing about that is that the dbacks are allowing us to stay right there. Who knows, maybe we will go into Arizona and sweep them and end up tied again. It’s just the game of baseball. The A’s beat the Angels again tonight, and that is not supposed to be happening ethier (either). Individually, Andre had a great night 3 for 5 with 2 doubles and his 17th homerun. James and Blake also had homers, but I’m sure you know all that already.

  130. tradejuanpypaperbag

We did get a little bit of “The Wizard of Oz” in there today. I think enchanted was the one that set that up. I’m not sure. His Go Go’s song is hilarious!!! Then earlier today porklinks had his calculations wrong on how many different combinations of his name can actually be done, and it’s over 13,000 different ways now instead of his original statistic of 5,000 and something.

  131. kpookiemon

    For Johnny Cash:

    I taught that weepin’ river
    How to cry, cry, cry
Taught the clouds how to cover up
    A clear blue sky
Tears I cried for those Dodgers
Are gonna flood you, big river
And I’m gonna sit right here until I die…

  132. tradejuanpypaperbag

Ward Dear ~ NASCAR expert ~ I am assuming you heard that Carl and Kyle were put on probation, but what does that mean? I read an article, and I knew about the incident, but I wasn’t clear on what a probation means in NASCAR.

  133. dodgereric

I saw some of the game. Pretty much all of it from the 3rd through the 7th. I shut it off. I couldn’t stand it anymore. I don’t quit. I never quit. But sometimes it’s self defense. I was going to have a heart attack or a broken TV. The errors. The 0 for 1000 streak W/RISP. Maddux tossing BP. Oh, the humanity! My brother-in-law called and asked me to write into the Times again. I would, but when I’m really angry they never publish them ’cause they’re just too………honest, I guess.

Wow, I just looked up Tru’s question (at least I think it was Tru. After mixing up sara and amy, I don’t trust myself) about “when was the last time Kent went 0 for 5?.

    0 for 6 Aug 18, 2007
    0 for 5 Apr 27, 2007

    Since 4/27/07, he’s gone:
    1 for 5 11 times
    2 for 5 13 times
    3 for 5 4 times
    4 for 5 3 times
    5 for 5 0 times

I think that’s amazing. For some reason. Maybe I’m just tired.

  134. tradejuanpypaperbag

Kahli ~ I totally picture Johnny singing it too – that is just great!!!!!! Have you started school yet?

  135. tradejuanpypaperbag

Eric ~ I get to the point in the games where I have to leave the room and do other things. I missed all the homeruns because of that issue. It’s not so much I didn’t want to watch the game, it’s I was tired of hearing how bad we are doing with RISP. Anybody that has been following the Dodger games doesn’t need to be told that every two minutes or less. We are very aware of that statistic unfortunately.

  136. obi_wen

Hey ITD crew. I know we’re going through a really tough period now. It’s beyond frustrating at times and it seems like the team can’t catch a break. But don’t give up. Things are going to change for the better for our team, the timely hits with RISP will start to happen, Manny will get hot again, The Bison will start getting key hits, Loney will have another incredible September, Ethier will hit more bombs, Russell Martin will return to form, the starting pitchers will go deep and the bull pen will once again put out the fires, and before you know it, BOOM, we’re right back on top.
So in the midste of a losing streak that IMO will end tomorrow. let me go on record right now and state that the Dodgers will win the NL West. So once again, I say Don’t give up! GO DODGERS!!! This message paid for by the National Coalition for a Juan Pierre Free Outfield

  137. kpookiemon

Ward and June, you two have been soloing since 10:30. I feel like I’m in a Dodger funk because this will go down to final week…and we’ll rue this B.S. crap game they’re playing…the PVLs have being atrocious, Kent taking special honors for his recent iron glove…and…………………….I don’t look forward to playing the Pods 9 of the last 25 games…even if 6 are at home…for whatever reason, the Padres eat the Dodgers…it’s like a bad rivalry you don’t take seriously ’cause you got the Gnats to hate more…the Pods have no one to hate but the Dodgers.

  138. tradejuanpypaperbag

Kahli ~ I worry about the Giants and the Padres because neither team has anything to lose, and everything to gain by beating the crap out of us. It’s each of those teams goal in life – Beat LA!! I can honestly see us sweeping the dbacks this weekend only to lose to the Padres and Giants down the road – the very short road now.

  139. tradejuanpypaperbag

So, you are one of those starting school after Labor Day schools – like it’s supposed to be? That’s good ~ I wish we could go back to that. It’s just too hot right now to be in school, not that Tuesday, September 2nd is supposed to be cooler, but at least you know the cool down is not far away. We have had upper 90’s since the 18th and it’s just too hot. The kids don’t even want to be on the playground at all.

  140. tradejuanpypaperbag

Kahli ~ we solo alot this late at night. Sometimes you are on, sometimes nsblues is on, and occasionally sara will be on this late, but for the most part, it’s just the two of us.

  141. dodgereric

GAAAAAAHHHH!!! Boy, this system must get tired before I do. It keeps destroying my posts.

Nelly, I’m with you on the RISP talk. It’s worse on the radio. You’d think the director would be telling them to talk about something else. And regarding the NASCAR probation, I could be wrong, but it’s only a warning. If they attempt to continue their little war on the track, they’ll take points away. Now it doesn’t mean much for the next two weeks. But when they start the Chase, they’ll still have 4 weeks to go to finish their probation. If they lose points, it will almost for sure end their shot at the Cup.

Obi, I agree with your optimism. Otherwise, why bother to care? Right? If you’re giving up, why continue to watch?

Kahli, it’s just me and Junie a lot of the time right about now! And I don’t think I’ve ever seen a worse infield defense in my life. Stunningly poor.

I need to turn in. I’m not expecting the sheriff to be around tomorrow. Good night, my Dodger friends!!

  142. northstateblues

I’d do anything for the Pennant. Let Frank know, this lifelong Lakers fan will wear a Celtics t-shirt and dance a jig if the Dodgers can win the pennant this year.

Yeah, that’s a little crazy, but it’s 12:30am, I should’ve been asleep hours ago, and my eyesights’ a little fuzzy. isn’t that the ITD Late Night solliliquy, though?

I’m too tired to be pessimistic.

  143. northstateblues

and hell, while I’m at it, I’ll wear :: puke :: Patriots gear :: puke :: if they win it all.

If they get into October period, I think there might be a kewpie doll in their future.

  144. tradejuanpypaperbag

Good night Ward Dear!! Thanks for the explanation on NASCAR stuff, and I am glad I am not the only one who is thinking our own announcers should be a little more Dodger friendly -I feel like they are forgetting they are supposed to be on our side. Talk to you tomorrow ~ 🙂

  145. dodgereric

    Good night, Herr Doktor.

    Good night, Frau Blücher.

How about a little varm milk?

    Nothing. Thank you.

    Ovaltine?

  146. tradejuanpypaperbag

nsblues ~ LOL!!! I don’t know about the Celtics gear….. I am not much of a Laker fan anymore (I’m kind of attached to the Kings now), but I still hate the Celtics.

  147. northstateblues

Dnell, I hate them too, but with Frank being a Boston fan, I think he wouldn’t mind a diehard Lakers/Raiders fan wear Celts/Pats gear. Not that he could do anything about it, but I put up the bet in good faith, as it’d be just my luck that I’d have to wear that stuff, and put it on the internet or some crap 🙂

Okay, gotta wake up and hit the 100 mile round-trip commute tomorrow. Have a good night, and enjoy baseball while it’s still around, it might be a loooooooooooong winter.

  148. kpookiemon

Ward and June–if ARE really Ward and June…and you’re still awake–tell me what Eddie always called Theodore when you two weren’t around. That’s your quiz…I know that Eddie called the Beaver a lot of things, but this one more often than not! Which brings up the first pronographic line ever uttered on American television: “Ward, aren’t you being a little hard on the Beaver?”

  149. tradejuanpypaperbag

    nsblues – good night:)
    .
Kahli ~ LOL!! yes, I am still up, but Ward Dear is went to bed, and no I don’t know the answer to the question, and I guess multiple choice is out of the question so let me think about that. I feel like I should know the answer, but I don’t. Now, the last line you mentioned I do know about. – hmmm ~ you got me thinking. I am sure Ward knows the answers as he seems to know the answers to many things.

  150. trublu4ever

Good Morning ITDland ~ There is nothing more I can add as to how we all feel after our loss last night. I think Nomar needs a rest. I think Casey Blake should play short and put Blake DeWitt at third. I’d move Casey up in the lineup. I still believe we can turn things around. It’s good to see Andre playing well but, it looks as if the pressure is getting to our veterans instead of the youngsters. Matt will pull out of his slump and today will be the day.

  151. thinkingblue

    Good Morning ITD,
Well Dodgers are really really in a slump. I agree with TRUBLUE we can still turn around. I have not lost my hope. Well I didn’t see yesterday’s game, since it is on during work hours. But yes I was in here reading all your comments and that tells me what, when & who is doing what. I don’t know what is wrong with the Dodgers. But they need to come together and start winning. Wish you all luck AND GOD BLESS YOU BOYS IN BLUE!

  152. dodgereric

    Gooooooooood morning ITD!!!!!!!!

Well, I’m wearing my fashionable Dodger Blue polo shirt with the LA logo on it at work today in an effort to 1) show my support to a team that has no where to go but up and 2) give them a little luck. They sure can use it. Nothing much seems to go their way right now, but if the breaks do indeed even out over the long haul, then we should be OK down the stretch. But as bear says, we’re not alone anymore in this division race. SOOOOOO, let’s get our respective arses in gear and win a friggin’ game in Washington!

And kahli, that’s a trick question. “what Eddie always called Theodore when you two weren’t around?” If we weren’t around, how would we know what Eddie called our beloved Theodore? Hmmm?

  153. tradejuanpypaperbag

Good Morning ITD writers and readers!!
    .
I don’t have much to add, but I know the Dodgers are going to bust out of this slump!! I am keeping the faith!!
    .
Kahli ~ still working on the question, but haven’t found the answer – lol!!
    .
Have a wonderful morning, and I will check in when the opportunity arises.
    .
GO DODGER BLUE ~ WE LOVE YOU!!!
    .
dnelly, nelly, nells, nelle, June Darlin’, Junie, mom, Miss Debbie, and Mrs. Nelson ~ ETHIERaholics and very proud of Andre and his 3 for 5 night, with his 17th upper deck home run last night.

  154. tradejuanpypaperbag

LOL!!! Good one Ward Dear!!! LOL!!!! I knew you would come up with a clever answer ~ LOL!!! I am not wearing any Dodger logos on me today, but I am also wearing Dodger blue today in hopes to bring them some added support.
    .
    June Darlin’, Junie

  155. dodgereric

    Good morning, June Darlin’!

(pssssst! Don’t tell anyone, especially kahli. I haven’t watched one of those episodes in probably 30 years, but I think Eddie called just about everyone Sam. Maybe he had a special name for Beav. I know he was a ‘creep’!)

  156. trublu4ever

I think you are right, eric. I tried to look it up and all I found was Sam. If not that, how about pipsqueak!

  157. jhallwally

Good morning gang!! Been away from home for the past few days. Guess I haven’t missed much as this has been a disasterous road trip so far. Darn lucky that the DB’s aren’t real hot either. Amazing that we’re still in this race. Look out below. The Rox are quietly creeping back into the fray. Hope all of you are well and happy. Let’s get back on the winning track today. GO DODGERS!!!!

By the way, how’s your day going? I wore all my Dodger blue yesterday and it didn’t work. I even ate my ethieralicious sunflower seeds and Andre had a good day. Do you know what Matts favorite snack is? Thought I’d try it for luck.

57dodger ~ We were really missing you. Where the h*** have you been. You know, we get worried when jhall doesn’t post!!

Bonjour MereTruBleu!! Out of town on business. Hectic week. Glad to be back. Now the Dodgers need to get it going. LOL!!!

  162. tradejuanpypaperbag

Well if that wasn’t a coincidence – honest jhall, trublue and I didn’t plan that!! LOL!!! I have gotta go – catch up at recess!!!!

  163. jhallwally

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Clause!!! LOL!!
Well, the goal for August and this tough stretch against good teams was to stay within striking distance. So far with alot of help from the DB’s we’re still in it. Time to get it done or go home.

Welcome back jhall! Chevrolet coupe mow de lawn!

The NL West reminds me of some of those bicycle races that they have in velodromes. You know, they just kind of slooowly pedal around for a while before the mad dash at the end? Well, let’s be the one who takes off first and leaves the others holding the bag!

    good morning gang.
    .
Dnelly- sorry I couldn’t chat last night. I’m glad that they boys are feeling it and reacting too. I just read an article where Matt was blaming himself for not getting the job done at lead off. I know he and Andre and the rest of the guys have emotion 🙂
    .
Jhall/ 57/ Heinz- good morning. We’ve missed you.
    .
I can’t really comment on the situation. Everything has been said already and we all understand the crappiness of the way we’ve been playing.
    .
At least TJ gave me a chuckle this morning.

I think we will start our road to the division championship today. We have just had the most dismal period and things have got to get better from this day forward. Manny will hit a homerun and the defense will tighten. I’m still a believer in this team. I know we lost yesterday but, we did score four runs and that’s a plus.

  167. dodgereric

LOL, crz! Hell, I’ll wear one if they’ll start winning!

Hi amy! I read Kemp’s comments and thought it was big of him to take responsibility. Every guy in that locker room should be saying the same thing though. Especially the vets.

  168. amyw27

eric- It was a good article. I think it showed maturity and emotion. Matt is so great 🙂
    .
Hello Tru- How are you? Yes, today we HAVE to get it done. There are no excuses on why we should lose tonight’s game.
    .
    we will keep the faith.
    .
Emma dear- keep up the good work :)- P.S.- the picture of me and Jeff in the bull pen is my new computer wllpaper- I though you’d like that 🙂

A statue of Lima would also be a reminder that no matter how bad you are, you can still be good, which ought to be the Dodgers’ rallying cry after losing nine of their last 11.

He’s still a flake, of course. He didn’t tell his team he was skipping Tuesday’s game to be with his family in New York, so here I was in Camden interviewing him by phone.

“I still run into Dodger fans who thank me for that great moment in their life,” he said, “which was also the best game I ever pitched. I’d like the chance to pitch again for the Dodgers.”

Sad, because I want to make fun of this, but I can’t. I was at that Game. It was Rad. It was sad at the time to me, while sitting there just how Rad it was and how I missed 18 years of it. Now it’s just pathetic.

I was at the Lima game along with my brother leekfink. It was awesome!! We both appeared on the TV news (channel 13?) after the game. I said the Dodgers were a “team of destiny”.
    .
Ten minutes after I was interviewed I saw next-day starter Odalis Perez driving out of Dodger Stadium looking emotionless and I knew it was all over.

  172. dodgereric

I just sent this one into the Times letter dept:

“I was sitting there in my living room Wednesday watching the Dodgers play some of the most inept and embarrassing baseball I have ever seen in my 55 years on this planet, trying to keep from throwing something through my TV set. Three things kept going through my mind:

    Fire Joe
Fire the guy who hired Joe
Fire the guy who hired the guy who hired Joe”

    Amy,
is that pic on the website? not sure if you read where I took pics of you while you were asking your question to the boys. It shows you from the back with Torre, Mattingly, Kemp and Russ. Let me know if you want me to send them to and what email I can use. I hate that afterwards, I thought of something I should have asked Jaime McCourt.

First off, I’ll admit to being a cock-eyed optimist, complete with rose-colored glasses. Although yesterday’s game didn’t go our way, I have to believe that those 3 home runs are a positive sign that this team is starting to wake up. The assumption of responsibility by the young guns illustrates a maturity beyond their years of experience and bodes well for the destiny of the Dodgers this year (and, hopefully, for many years to come). This is all good. That being said – Let’s beat the heck out of the Nats – Go Kershaw – Go Dodgers!

  175. trublu4ever

eric ~ I wish you would have told us you were sending the letter to the Times. We could all have signed it. Anyway, I’m proud of you! Who knows, in a day or two we might have to send it again!

  176. amyw27

Emma- no, the pic I had I took on my personal camera. Some nice girl in our “orange” group took it for me 🙂
Are there more pictures on-line?? If so please tell me!’
YES- please send me the picture you have of me. We should trade photos- the more the better 🙂
