This is the best line-up I’ve seen Torre come out with all year sans Furcal.

I really do like this lineup. This might actually work 🙂 And what do you know, Ethier in with a lefty pitching. I thought he would sit just for old times sake, but Torre’s actually giving him a chance.

jnv – I am assuming the fires in the Big Sur/Monterey/Santa Cruz area are worse because of the wind they get from the coast, alot like those that suffer the same thing down in so-cal. My son has a tournament in Salinas/Monterey the weekend after next so I guess we will be able to see for ourselves.
Hey, Kemp might not be the best guy to lead off, but he can at least go 1-4 or 0-5 which is what slappy mcgroundout was doing.

One of the horrible symptoms of CAI is that those who have it have no brains to begin with, e. That’s what enables the cranium to be inserted. If the brains are still there, CAI cannot take hold. Tsk, tsk.

Against a righty this would not be good, but I don’t mind Kemp against a lefty leading off.
I like this line-up and I like Ethier in the 7th spot. He’s more productive there. He doesn’t get a chance in the 2nd spot as Slappy was never on base that much and the 7th 8th and 9th place hitters haven’t been on for him to hit behind, when he’s hitting in the 2 hole.
This line-up might actually produce and score more than a couple of runs which is sorely needed. I will have to watch MLB.TV late as I can’t watch the game at the regular time. I want to turn on the game and see some action tonight so you guys get us some runs.
I believe that is what is driving those fires along with the water drought. And there are so many fires the firemen are letting the fires in the isolated areas just burn and are focusing their attention on the populated areas.
Good point, scurtis. Kemp destroys lefties for the most part with troubles against righty breaking stuff.

I am so with you on this one, even though you are a Cowboys fan (jk). I do think, however, they had him in the 2 hole because of his patience (well he had patience until this group got a hold of him).

I would like to have seen Repko in again tonight. He had a bad night just like Slappy had just about every night, why doesn’t he get a chance?? I mean the guy had to fly to Texas yesterday after being called up for the first time this year, I am sure there were butterflies and nerves. And since when does Torre sit a guy after going 0-5??? I thought guys only sat after they hit HR’s and went 4-4???? Is this part of the CAI again????
Pierre going on the DL is what pulled Joe’s head out. That’s what we all knew had to happen for someone else to get into the leadoff slot. That, or Furc coming back.
I like the lineup, too. Are we sure that Joe didn’t fly back to be at Juan’s bedside and it was Bowa who made out the lineup?

jnv – there are so many firefighters here in town, it feels like it should be a firefighters convention. I guess they have run out of hotel rooms in Mariposa and Oakhurst that the next spot is Merced. I am assuming Fresno is being used too, but still may be a little far for some areas.

It really will come down to who can put their pitching and hitting together first, and that will determine who wins this division.

jnv – I would have liked to see Repko, Kemp and Ethier. I pulled for Repko all last night and it was pretty upsetting to read in the media how some reporters treated him knowing he had just been brought up. He took it in stride though and said he felt he was just too anxious. Statistically, Ethier best spot has been 5th this year, but he has had some good days in the 7th hole too. I could see him batting 8th because they would have to pitch to him, especially if he leads off an inning or with 1 out because you are not going to go around him only to get to Furcal a batter later. The only time it doesn’t benefit Ethier is with men on and two outs – they will walk him to get to pitcher. With maza and berroa in the 8th slot now -who’s afraid of them.?
That is so true, our 8th hole has been exactly that…. A hole for some time now. Hopefully when Furk gets back and the “Fridge” comes back we can get something going. I hope Jones can find his swing and come back and provide the thump we need. I don’t care if he bats .222 like last year as long as the balls he hits go over the fence!!

I agree. Russell is an outstanding catcher and overall ball player. I dunno, there was so much excitement and buzz over voting last year that the fans got so into it. This year it seems like there is no hype and that ppl don’t care as much. The fact that Martin is not even in the top 5 is ridiculous. Anyway, I know that I voted for him my max amount.
jj – only the starters for each league are picked by the fans. The rest of the team and the pitchers are picked by the coaches. Every team has to be represented, so Russ will be there for the Ds, and he’s only deserving one IMO.

I agree. Kersh isn’t ready for the bigs. He should be in the minors strengthening his arm and building up innings. Right now he’s a bit of a sideshow for Frank to bring in somemore fans to the stadium. The kid’s probably going to be great, just not now.

Fox Sports Houston said it was a concussion, and was sent to Methodist Hospital for further obsevation.
Loney has to learn to speak slower.

I think this was actually one of the better games for Kershaw. He might not have given up those last two runs if he was left in. He only had two walks vs. 4 K’s tonight. I do agree that he doesn’t seem as ready for the majors, as some think, and I’m concerned that he’s not getting the close attention coaching that he would get from somebody other than Honeycutt. But, overall, I can’t disagree about keeping him with the club for the rest of the year, and I hope he continues to progress.
Eduardo, which “proven hitter” would you like that would’nt cost 2 or 3 of our young, frontline players? All so we can lose in the first round of the playoffs? As a lot of us have said all season, look to the future; play the kids and see who can play and who can’t and make moves accordingly….Furcal has sure had horrible luck in his walk year. We’ve likely seen the last of him this year. The D’s might want to consider bringing up DeJesus up to get an idea of what he can do. I agree that Hu and Maza aren’t the answer.

it was a mistake to take kershaw out when he did. i think it would have been better for kershaw’s confidence for him to blow the game than to let his teammates blow it. this is bogus.

Brox has not impressed me this year – too inconsistent. I wonder whether it’s lack of conditioning like a couple of our other fat slob guys. He’s certainly not looking like a potential closer now.
How does Joe not let Kuo pitch out of that. The guy is a strike out artist. Brox does NOT put out fires. He is fine to take the 8th as a set up man with a few runs ahead.

Torre really screwed up that inning. Kuo should have been left in. This happens everytime Broxton comes in with runners on in the 7th. He obviously doesn’t pitch well in that situation and then to make him even more uncomfortable by making him throw 4 balls to Berkman threw him off even more.
Agreed that Brox has not impressed this year. If I didn’t know anything about either of them I would think Cory Wade was better than him.

With a 6 – 1 lead, I’m going to fault Torre for giving this game away as much as the failed relievers. I think he was a batter or two early in taking out Kersh and the same with Kuo, who has been quite effective. But Torre knows his staff better, so we can probably chalk up a loss even when we score 6. Just great, JoJo.
Also, the last time Brox faced Houston he gave up 6 earned in a third of an inning. They obviously have his number. Horrible decision to bring him in there and intentionally walk the tying run.

torre made all the wrong decisions with the pitching staff today.. pulled kershaw too early. pulled kuo to early. i know i’m just repeating what you all said, but it’s true. so it needs to be repeated. if we lose, this one goes on the manager.
I think Brox throws to many sliders. Nobody can catch up to his fastball and he has a tendency to hang his slider in big spots.
You have to walk Berkman because he on fire. It wasn’t a bad choice but take Kuo out was.. He should been in over Falkorbarg or however you spell his name.

Throw out that one really bad outing by Brox a few weeks ago and he’s pitched just about the same as always. He’s just no good unless he can start off an inning. Probably not going to be the closer we’re all hoping for after Saito goes.

We think some of our guys are struggling – Justin Upton, one of young players from the dbacks went 1-4 today and is now batting .236. He was above .300 a month ago. So, our guys could be a lot worse off, so hopefully they stay within themselves and they will pull out of this.
shad – I would have to guess ndeschenes is working on his mini essay right now. It’s always a good feeling to hear from ndeschenes rather than the anti-ndeschenes that enchanted can do very well.

I was using Connor when Loney was going through his slump, but now I kind of go back and forth. Mark Reynolds has been great for me too. My outfield is Ethier, Kemp and Upton which when they are all playing do very well for me.
I have Atlanta pitching which runs hot and cold. I also have Jhonny Peralta for my SS and Mark Ellis is my 2nd baseman – love both of them – multi-tooled.

Figured when I read the comments here there would be plenty of hate crimes directed at Torre. I won’t profess superior knowledge…after all, hindsight IS perfect, 20-20 as they say. But when Torre pulled Kershaw with 2 outs I was livid. The TV told the story of how tough Kershaw is with runners in scoring position. And he’d just induced a weak a** grounder back to the box. You think Torre would have lifted Lowe or Penny? No, he’d have given them the “veteran’s benefit of the doubt.” I guarantee if he’d pulled Penny in that situation and a guy two or three days removed from AAA gave up the HR, pasting two more earned runs onto his precious stats (not to mention game-swinging momentum) Penny probably would have gone Chacon on Torre. Just another example of Torre not trusting the kids. I’m sure Joe will spin it that the kid had thrown enough pitches (sorry, only 90) or that he didn’t want to shatter his confidence with a loss (sorry, 5 run lead) or whatever…. COME ON, JOE, GO WITH YOUR BEST! And in the 6th inning, that would have been Kershaw…not Falkenborg.

Peralta has been very good for me lately even when indians played us. He had17 points yesterday and 7 points today. Mark Ellis had 10 points today. Mark Reynolds has gotten the most points for my team so far for the year.
I think Furcal is toast…I’ll bet they recommend surgery sooner than later. And when Nomar tweaks his calf in the next week or two playing shortstop, we’ll be looking at Berroa and Maza for the long haul.
I thought you was playing in a h2h league but I guess you playing in a point league.

The game certainly was eventful – we managed to send their catcher to the hospital after losing their pitcher last night, and we caused a collision in their outfield tonight too. If anything, we banged them up a little bit. And,yes, it was good to see Jeff come through and get one for us. The young players all did really well hitting the ball today. Most of our core got at least one hit with either an RBI or run scored. It was a good hitting night 🙂
I wouldn’t mind if Dewitt played his natural position at SS so we can keep Dewitt and LaRoche bat in there all the time. When LaRoche need rest we can always played Martin at 3rd and Ardoin can catch. I’m glad Martin is eligibity at 3rd base and it look weird to have him played there for me but never had the chance to do it because I always have one catcher on my team.

Isn’t it amazing that in every aspect of life, this kind of management wouldn’t be tolerated. And to think these people are getting paid thousands and millions of dollars to do that same thing that most of us are called on to do just because it is our job and it’s usually not worth what we are getting paid.
Here’s my take on the whole Furcal injury thing:
My guess is it’s not minor. Why would he go back to LA if it was minor? He has a bulging disc in his lumbar spine. It’s a debilitating injury. (look up the word: debilitate) I’ve been around x-ray facilities and have seen many injuries of this type and have seen their follow-ups. They usually don’t go very well. Sometimes they have ended Major League careers depending how severe they are. Remember, this is the second time Furcal has injured the SAME area and, he did it only eight months apart from one another.
Now, I’m not an expert on the subject but, I do know a few things having been in the field before. The fact that he’s played a few games after this latest injury is amazing. He probably has what is called a “lumbar disc hernia”. Ask your doctor what that means. He’ll tell you it’s no fun at all. It’s basically a “popped” bulging disc… this is bad, bad, bad. He probably had a bulging disc before and maybe it popped from all those spectacular diving stops and amazing twisting throws that he made.
If after all this latest rehab he’s been on doesn’t work, he’ll probably have to eventually have the surgery. It involves shaving the herniated/bulged portion of the disc to relieve the impingement of the nerve that’s causing him the pain. The rehab isn’t very comfortable.
So if after surgery and a new round of rehab, even by next spring, he may only be a shell of his former self. Then it may be career over. He’ll be lucky to just enjoy life pain free. I’m not exaggerating this… really. People think this is something he can just take a pill with or do core strengthening exercises with or whatever and then he’ll be okay. I only wish this were the case.
Again, I’m no expert, but this is the worst-case scenario and could likely happen. It’s heading in that direction.

With Furcal apparently out for the season, it’s time for us to get serious about a shortstop.

Someone mentioned using Blake DeWitt at short. As a gap-filler until Furcal came back I like the idea. But as a long-term solution the idea is a non-starter.

Obviously, Maza and Berroa are not the answer ever, and Hu isn’t the answer this year. DeJesus has played less than 200 professional games and in reality probably isn’t any more ready than Hu. Gotta give the kids a chance to develop. (Obviously not as long as certian managerial types insist on, but some time).

That means we need to look around the existing major league shortstops to see:
1) Who’s available?
2) Who among those is a good shortstop?
.
We can start by eliminating pretty much any starting shortstop on a contending team; contenders don’t trade away shortstops.
.
That leaves starters from: Washington (Cristian Guzman), Houston (Tejada), Cincinatti (Keppinger/Hairston), Pittsburgh (Jack Wilson), Baltimore (Nobody), Toronto (Eckstein), Kansas City (Mike Aviles), Cleveland (Jhonny Peralta), and Seattle (Yuniesky Betancourt). I could eliminate half the NL West too but until somebody starts playing like a champ, it’s still anybody’s division.

Any decent backups available? Arguably the Angels could let Maicer Izturis or Erick Aybar go.
That’s about it.
Not worth considering: Aviles, Eckstein
Not likely to be available due to small contract/young age: Betancourt, Izturis, Aybar, Keppinger, and Peralta

That leaves Cristian Guzman, Miguel Tejada, Jerry Hairston Jr., and Jack Wilson. We need to go after one of these four guys.

Tejada is clearly the best of these, and by far the most expensive at $13 million/yr thru 2009.

Guzman has been a pretty good player most of the time in his career. Due $4.2 million/yr thru 2009. Injured much of last year and seems unable to play a full season.

Jerry Hairston Jr. is only any good by comparison to Berroa and Maza. Less than $1 million/yr and worth it.
.
Jack Wilson is a good-fielding shortstop with below-average but respectable offensive numbers. He’s hitting .313 so far this year but on balance over the last several years he can be expected to hit around .270 -.300 for the balance of this year. Good for about 40 extra-base hits a year. Way overpaid at about $7 million/year.

Tejada would be a nice pickup, but expensive especially in terms of the personnel we would have to send back to Houston. I imagine they would want something like Kershaw, LaRoche, and Hu.

Guzman would be a good pickup to fill the gap until Hu/DeJesus is ready. Would probably cost something like LaRoche and two pretty good prospects.
.
Hairston is barely off my list of “Not Worth Considering”. Could be as cheap as one very good or two good prospects.

Jack Wilson, like Guzman, would fill the gap nicely until Hu/DeJesus is ready. Could probably be had for relatively cheap because I gotta believe the Pirates want to unload his contract although the contract price may be somewhat mitigated by his popularity with Pirates fans. He could maybe be had for one very good prospect and a couple of decent prospects.

Anyway, we MUST do SOMETHING at shortstop. The in-house answers (with the possible but unlikely exception of DeJesus) are a major drag on our team.

Of course I personally favor local product Jack Wilson (Westlake Village), a three-time nominee for the Roberto Clemente service award (See here: http://tinyurl.com/58yazo) and a guy who plays the game 110% the right way.

Other than the middle comment about his kids acting like some of the players on the team, this is one of the most positive things that Kent has said about his teammates in a long time. It sounds like there was a glimpse of Jeff actually having fun playing the game.
I agree with kssparkuhl’s dire assessment about Furcal’s condition, and I have suspected all along that nothing short of surgery would fix the problem. Even then the outcome is uncertain at best. Since he’s in the last year of his contract, it’s understandable that we don’t want to foot the bill for that surgery with no benefit to the team at the end. If reasonable minds prevailed, they should extend Furcal’s contract for an additional year at no additional pay, but maybe with some incentives added, let Furcal have his surgery immediately at our expense, and see how his recovery and rehabilitation fares for next season. Then at the end of next season he can have his free agency. In the absence of some solution such as that, I don’t see how anything will result either to our benefit or to Raffy’s. Of course, Boras may not agree.
In the meantime, I don’t see that there is help for us at shortstop through trade or free agency. Even though DeJesus has limited professional experience, I understand that he’s good defensively, and he conceivably could hit better than .250 with the Dodgers. So, I don’t see what’s to lose. We certainly need to get rid of Berroa, because even Maza could hit that .250 mark. Let’s also see what Nomar can do at short for fill-in the rest of this season.
LaRoche or Dewitt don’t have the range to play shortstop.
Maybe Nomar can fill in that spot, but even then his body is so fragile that he would be hesistant on tough plays.
I fear Nomore will break again inside of two weeks, but I noticed that Angel Chavez is doing OK at AAA. Berroa just needs to be gone and take Sweeney with him. If those aren’t the two guys cut when Jones and Nomar get back, then there’s something seriously wrong with management.

Another nail biting game to say the least, but at least it ended with a win for the Dodgers. I was looking at stats from around our division and our young players are doing pretty good compared to how some of their young counterparts on other divisional teams are doing. So, as long as they keep hanging in there and don’t let the media get a negative hold on them, I think they will do what we know they are capable of doing. Yesterday was hopefully a good turning point for them to not let up and keep up the momentum.

Those of you outside the Los Angeles area don’t get a chance to see the post-game show, “Dodgers Live,” which regularly includes the segment “Torre’s Stories.” Torre’s Stories is a pre-taped segment in which he reflects and pontificates about some of the past highlights of his long baseball career.
Cute name for the segment, right? Well, we at SoSG saw a copy of the memo listing some of the alternatives which were rejected in favor of this nightly segment:
Torre’s Quarries, a live post-game segment in which Torre tries to defend his rock-headed decision to keep going to Mark Sweeney as a pinch-hitter on a nightly basis, despite Sweeney’s microscopic batting average (now .095 and continuing to plummet like a stone). Filled with a lot of stuttering, trite cliches, and slo-mo recaps of Sweeney turning 3-1 pitches into pop-ups to the second baseman.
Torre’s Lorries, in which Torre takes the interviewer through his collection of British motor trucks. Also ties in with Fox’s unyielding NASCAR promotions and interstitials.
Torre’s Gorys, where Torre recaps some of the battle scars he’s amassed during his baseball career. Includes videos from some of his operations, and maybe the occasional annual physical. “Using the whole fist there, doc?”

Dodger Trainer Stan Conte must still be working for the Giants, as there is no possible way to otherwise explain how the Dodgers’ roster has more holes in it than Mark Sweeney’s bat collection. Register highlighting Jason Repko’s struggles Monday night as leadoff man and continued to bash Repko in today’s Daily News, had only this to say about Matt Kemp as leadoff man: “Kemp’s .331 on-base percentage and rate of striking out once every 3.8 plate appearances hardly made him an ideal candidate to hit there, but he did begin the day with 16 stolen bases.”

Meanwhile, I can’t find any of the newspaper reporters who pointed out this fact: MATT KEMP GOT ON BASE THREE TIMES IN TUESDAY’S GAME. Nor anyone who pointed out that Juan Pierre only got on base three times in a game on four occasions during his 48-game tenure as the leadoff hitter. (This does not take into account getting on base due to error or by forcing anotther guy out. I don’t have enough time to do that kind of research.)

MLK – thanks for pointing that out about Kemp, and they really need to give Repko some time to get adjusted. Come on – look how much time they are giving to Sweeney, but then Repko is not proven vet. Also, I posted the James Loney song twice during last night’s game – he had a great night – #2 play of the day on the caught pop-up bunt.
I guess maybe I might have been a little tired last night and didn’t say it like it really is. (see 11:43 PM) If Furcal has the surgery, IMO, in all likelyhood, his career is finished. He’ll be lucky just to enjoy life pain-free. The common thread among all these types of injuries, the next day, “I couldn’t get out of bed…” or “…my wife had to help me out of bed” or “…the pain was unbearable”, to which Raffy had originally mentioned all of the above. Nerve impingements of this nature suck the life out of even the best of athletes.
It’s kryptonite in the face of Superman and, unfortunately our Superman is Rafael Furcal. I’m afraid his career may be coming to a screeching halt. If he comes back from this, it will be a miracle indeed.
I agree with the above post. We need to start thinking more long term for the remainder of the season with regard to our shortstop position, regardless if Raffy has the surgery or not. He’s being stubborn and it’s not healing that quickly. We can’t wait as long as he can. We miss you Raffy… we need you… but you’re a wounded super-hero. We need to move on without you right now. The Sweeney situation is really pathetic, and it shows Torre’s intransigence and outright stupidity in keeping up his useless experiment. I can’t really put the blame on Sweeney anymore for not being able to hit, except that he should know better and simply retire. Can anybody imagine JoJo getting away with what’s he’s done with Sweeney in New York? There have to be any number of better alternatives than a pinch hitter at under .100 with the number of AB’s that Sweeney has been given. If he isn’t gone whenever we need to open up a roster spot for anybody else, then clearly Torre should be GONE. Of course, many of us have maintained the latter position for quite a while.

Regarding Sweeney, it’s also what might’ve been. If JoJo bats anyone instead of Sweeney and they hit at even a .250 clip, what might’ve happened in those games with 9-10 extra hits that Sweeney didn’t get? JoJo’s quick to blame the kids, but he should look in the mirror to see why it is we’re really a sub .500 team.
I also have said this before, but if it takes DFAing guys like Sweeney and Berroa to keep JoJo the Clown from using them, then Ned needs to have his balls drop and do it for the good of the team. Sweeney and Berroa aren’t the future of this team anyway, so why lolligag around?

MLK, I’ve been thinking about a replacement SS now that Raffy is down and I’m with everyone else here, down for the rest of the year if not for his career. You had your compelling names that could be picked up. Actually, my vote is for Tejada. Yes, he’d be expensive but the amount of $ that the Dodgers need to shed to bring anyone in doesn’t seem to faze them; I don’t think they would flinch at Tejada’s $ price tag. After Quintero went down yesterday (and oh, I feel sooooo bad for him right now) Charlie & Lyons said (and I’m paraphrasing here), “So who’s going to be their (Houston’s) catcher, long term?” I know Houston needs a young catcher (and no, I’m not talking about Russ Martin). But Lucas May might be a possibility. He’s young (only 23) and he’s a good catcher, from what I understand. If May stayed within the Dodger’s organization, he would never play since Russ is here to stay and he’s still young too. I think Houston also could use relief pitchers. We could include Falkenborg in the package. I don’t think we want to part with Wade. He’s the type of pitcher that the Dodgers don’t have many of; a pitcher that’s not afraid of going inside to hitters. Yes, I also think this kind of trade would need to include another one of our younger players, perhaps one that is in the majors now, but I say if that player (and no, I don’t want to think of who that is right now) is playing in a defensive position that there would be a good backup from AAA, then I would still do it.
Tejada isn’t hitting like his old, ‘roid days but he’s not stinking it up either. Here are his current stats:

No, Tejada is no lead-off hitter, so that would need to be addressed, but not by trading anyone; just shuffle the lineup a bit. I wouldn’t mind seeing Loney in the top spot – he still hits for a good average. Although Matty didn’t do too badly yesterday. That’s my take, IMHO.

Duh, certainly he is valuable at the deadline. There are scads of players that are valuable at the deadline and would get interest from the aforementioned list of usual suspects. That doesn’t mean it makes sense or that the asking price will be reasonable.
thx jhall! I’m no expert but something must be done long-term with SS. Forget Raffy’s injury and how long will it take him to recover (if he ever does). It’s his contract year and I really don’t see the Dodgers resigning him after 2008. So SS would need to be addressed anyways. His injury is just pushing it up a few months. And enchanted, I hope you’re kidding me about Berroa being Ned’s answer to our SS problem.
And, yes, I do see the Rox making a run in this division. The Pads have been out of it for a long time. The gnats are doing slightly better in the division than I thought, but I think that’s more because the snakes and the D’s (up to now) haven’t run away with the division.
He is great all around, but is not great outside Coors Field. With Dodger Stadium being a pitcher’s park, Andre is still pretty close to Holliday. Only 3 less homeruns, 7 less RBI, 10 less K’s. And Andre is in and out of the lineup so often, how can he get any consistency? I agree Holliday would be a great pickup, but at what price? And that would then leave us with an outfield of Pierre, Andruw, and Holliday. Do you leave Kemp on the bench?

Eduardo, teams like the Angels, Cardinals and Rays would be the types of teams that would go for Holliday because they actually have a chance to win this year and he could put them over the top. We get Holiiday and what do we have?? We have Holliday. This team has many more issues than one person can fix. Even if we play .600 ball the second half of the year, that’s only 87 wins. Good enough for the West? Probably. But no way this team makes it past the first round even with Holliday. Plus Ethier I believe is capable of putting up Dusty Baker type numbers if he plays consistently and isn’t jerked around by JoJo.

The team has been hitting the last 2 games without pathetic Slappy killing them softly with his weak ground outs and pop ups, just didn’t get any “big” hits in the first game is all. After getting 3 hits over 2 games against the Halos, 11 hits in game 1 should have been applauded by the media, but was instead cause for negativity towards Repko and the young guns.

Call me an idiot, but playing SS might just be the best fit for Nomar since he became a Dodger, that is given the uncertainty of Raffy’s return if at all. If, and that’s a big “IF”, Nomar can stay healthy, he can really help us without blocking Andy, Blake or James this time.

I think that would invigorate the team and certainly us fans, and would let somebody like Logan or Ng take this team forward at the trade deadline to put best accomplishment forward for the rest of the season and for the future. Since Ned is basically a PR guy, besides being a total horse’s ***, Frank can always find him a PR job with one of his charity ventures. Here is a story that my friend Lore and her friends (I call them Russell’s chicks) related to me. They had gone to Macy in Glendale to get Milton Bradley’s autograph. While being there they heard that Jeff Kent was at the Macy in Northridge so even though it was late they decided to drive there. eric (I know you are working) – that was an excellent article, and I hadn’t seen that one yet. I agreed with that whole list, especially the top being Oakland pitching. Other than Blanton, the rest of that staff has been rockin’ lately, and I have to admit Jonathon Sanchez is definitely getting it done for the gnats. I think we will have to face him this weekend. The one good thing about this weekend, is that Linsecum pitches Thursday (I consider him their ace right now regardless of what the rotation says). If gnats rotation stays the same, the Dodgers will face Sanchez, Zito and Cain for the weekend series.
CP ~He’s been making comments about trading Ethier or Kemp for Holliday the last two days, so needless to say, I have yet to find anything he has said to have any substance. Yes, Matt Holliday is a great player and has great numbers, but the question that keeps coming to mind is if he is so treasured, then why aren’t the rockies trying to keep him – something is up 🙂 I tend to follow the rockies a little because Brian Fuentes is from Merced and my dad knows his dad. I haven’t read anything on that end that would indicate that the rox want a trade with us. I may be wrong, but I don’t think so. I think he thinks because we are girls and we happen to think our team happens to be handsome on top of being able to play great baseball, we don’t know what we are talking about. I’ve read the earlier posts; it is a bit suspicious that he keeps on throwing out a trade for Holliday. I’ve always loved Holliday’s play but no way would I EVER trade Ethier or Kemp for him. Heck, I wouldn’t want to see any of our young players in Colorado. If they would take any of our vets, then I wouldn’t mind the trade, but the only vet worthwhile (that isn’t on the DL) is Kent. I don’t see the Rox doing that either. Plus, even if you do, you’ve gotta have a live body to run out to 2B to replace him. No, there will be no trades for Holliday.

I noticed that Bobby Welch was on the field along with the rest of the 70’s boys on Saturday prior to the game but he was not at the luncheon event. I thought it was cute that after he was announced on the field, he headed to Mike Scioscia and gave him a big hug. Will he be at the 80’s luncheon on 8/2? I have a little story why Bobby became one of my favorites back then that I’ll share another time.

The 70’s Luncheon event ended too early. We spent like an hour on the field level seats waiting for the official time for the gates to open so we could go out and then come back in. I know during that time we were being asked if we wanted to sign up for the 80’s luncheon but I think the question and answer session should have been longer. Tommy was the one that said “this is a good time to stop…” At the time it was 4 p.m. The event was advertised to end at 5 p.m. Also, the 1st base restaurant was too small to accomodate all attendees and the lines to the food were very long. I wanted to go back to get dessert but like I said the lines were too long. At the conclusion and as I was leaving, I saw Jerry Reuss standing up eating a hotdog as that seems like it was the only thing left.

tickets are $75 but they do include a ticket to the game in the Reserved section. If you want Loge then is a little more. Also you get to go to the stadium early so you don’t pay for parking. They will direct you where to park. Once is over it should be close to BP. We stayed in the left field sitting in the shade being surpervised by ushers so we would not be asking the boys for baseballs or talking with them or asking for autographs.
