The latest from the Ravine…

If you’re going to be in Vegas next week, be sure to hit up a 51s game. It looks like Furcal, Andruw and possibly Nomar could be playing for Triple-A on Monday throughout much of the week. All three have rehab assignments coming up and hopefully we’re getting closer to being at full strength.

Scott Proctor came back from the doctor with an MRI that showed no structural damage, so rest and rehab is what should get him back on the right track. Given that he has pitched in more games than just about anyone else in baseball over the last two years, and he had been pretty good until late, I think this is very positive news. That said, Cory Wade, Hong-Chih Kuo and others have done a solid job in his place.

The lineup for tonight is:

Pierre, LF

Kemp, CF

Martin, C

Kent, 2B

Loney, 1B

LaRoche, 3B

Young, RF

Berroa, SS

Park, P

Importantly, thanks to jhall for wrirting “Frank, Ned, and JoJo the 3 clowns are turning the Dodgers into a circus.” and enchanted for writing “Trouble is when you get to be that rich, its like playing with Monopoly money.” to give me the idea.
    .
Apologies to Stephen Sondheim for this:
    .
    Pierre is rich.
    Ned has fake hair.
The team will be last in the West,
    Fans in despair.
    Send in the clowns.
    .
    Fans are all pissed.
    They don’t approve.
    Torre keeps jerking around,
    Nomar can’t move.
    They are all clowns;
    Send in the clowns.
    .
Fans want to see the kids play,
Finally knowing the kids that should play ev’ryday,
Making their entrance fifteen dollars in hand,
    Sure who should play,
    So few are there.
    .
    Jeff Kent takes hacks.
    “Kid’s fault”, says he.
    Andruw and Sweeney flail wildly.
    Yer Out! Strike three!
    But where are the clowns?
    Quick, send in the clowns.
    Don’t bother, they’re here.
    .
    McCourt is rich,
    But still no ring,
    Losing so many this year.
    Promote Kim Ng!
    But where are the wins?
    The kid could still win.
    Well, maybe next year.

jhall – Peralta is on my fantasy team so it’s always nice to see him do well when he is not playing the Dodgers.

A while back we compiled a list of our regular bloggers and determined their physical location, city and state. There are still some names that we recognize, but we don’t have the city and state information for those. If you care to, please provide that information on this blog, and we will pick up and update the list. If there are names that we are missing on the list, please feel free to give us additional blogger names as well. Thank you.

GRADY GRADY GRADY GRADY GRADY GRADY GRADY

jhall – Grady is awesome – what a lead off man he is! 🙂

  6. jhallwally

Thanks for the updated list Bear!!!
Yep Nelly, Grady and Peralta are awesome. Indians up 6 zip now.

  7. jungar@wsgcorp.com

    .292 .330 .388 .717
    .293 .331 .353 .685
    .279 .330 .321 .650

    as leadoff : 256 .296 .292 .588

Juan Pierre last three years. So now, when I hear Charlie Steiner say he is having a good year I can tell him to **** off. I don’t have tobite my tongue. . Ah .360 OBP was so long ago. I can’t wait to see what type of numbers he puts up nest year and the year after and the year after that.

  8. jungar@wsgcorp.com

Our leadoff guy has not had a walk in like 3 weeks. When Pierre looks at those numbers he probably says, i’ll get some hits to fall to move my avg up to .290, i just gotta swing more.

  9. oldbrooklynfan

We have our Subway series here in New York and last I heard the Mets & Yankees slammed each other around in the first game at Yankee Stadium with the 2nd game tonight at Shea.
Let’s get this Freeway series out of the way.
I think we’ll do better against N.L. teams.
    Go Dodgers!!!!!

  10. perumike

My-a Juanpy, if he-a swing-a more, he-a get more hits, and make-a stronga his throwing arm. That’s my-a baby Juanpy!

  11. boblee14@yahoo.com

Per Josh, he said Proctor has been good until lately. He must have been watching a different Proctor than I have.

Those of you who are fortunate to go see the Dodgers in person, what is the talk about Pierre at the stadium. Are they just oblivious to how bad he is.
    .
I’m so sick of seeing him the lineup every game. Give us a break.
I cringe every time a ball is hit to left with a runner on base as I know we are going to be in trouble.

  12. tradejuanpypaperbag

jhall – for me Andre ,Grady is a close 2nd; Mark Texieira is 3rd (all around) – If just Dodgers – Andre, Russell and James *sara has the rights to russell

  13. rodmky@optusnet.com.au

Afternoon (Aussie time) .. and I can’t log onto MLB.TV .. is anyone else having this problem??

  14. tradejuanpypaperbag

jungar – thanks for updating us on how much Pierre sucks – makes me more pissed watching Andre riding pine 🙂 LOL!!
    .
indians are rockin’ Sabathia is doing phenomenal work 🙂
    112 pitches, top of the 8th, 10K’s

This one is for Eric and his incredible effort putting together the Dodger Lyrics blog site. Outstanding Eric!!

    ERIC
Sung to Layla by Eric Clapton (appropriate, eh)

What do you do when your not working.
No Dodger game on the tube.
You’ve been blogging and writing great songs.
You know it shows your creative side.

Eric, we’re glad you saved our songs.
Eric, you’ve created a great blog.
Eric, don’t you know we thank you one and all.

    Your fine work and dedication.
When you have other things to do.
Like family times, and a Chevelle that is fine.
Where in the world do you find the time.

We make fun of the Dodger situation.
If not, we’d surely go insane.
Hope someday the team will find a way.
To win us a World Series ring.

Eric, you’ve created a great blog.
Eric, we’re glad you’ve saved our songs.
Eric, don’t you know we thank you one and all.

    THANKS BIG GUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. perumike

That’s the second game in a row that Aw-Hell Berroa has bobbled a ball at short and the runner makes it safely, and the one today was not a hard hit ball.

  17. tradejuanpypaperbag

That is so sweet jhall – Wow!! very well deserved though -eric is amazing!!! I thought you were working on something – you were too quiet 🙂
    .
my song is NOT sweet LOL!!!

  18. jhallwally

I wasn’t expecting sweet from you after you saw the lineup Nelly. LOL!!! I’m still laughing about that.

  19. rodmky@optusnet.com.au

Thanks .. just got on myself .. took a while and a re-boot .. but I’m there in time to see JP get out .. nothing’s changed… lol

  20. tradejuanpypaperbag

I see the practicing hitting ground balls to 2nd baseman paid off. (refer to Scott’s list on things Pierre works on 8 hours before a game) LOL!!

  21. jungar@wsgcorp.com

I just bring it up daily and no doubt it’s tiring to read for those who agree with me let alone the few that don’t, because I have to watch it everyday. I then am told that Ethier a kid who has hit lefties his whole career wont hit vs lefties cause he can’t hit vs lefties. Hey fair enough is my feeling. That’s fair, bench him. Fine. see that my thing, I don’t love any player over another, I just want the best player playing and everyday that Ethier sits so can Pierre can she-aaaaaaaaaat all over what it means to “make things happen” it bothers me. And then it bothers me even more because here is which each player is 188 abs are doing vs righties.

How on earth does Torre justify this when our offense is poor to begin with. I guess to be fair to Pierre maybe he is looking at hitting with runners on where Juan has done well this year. But then that leads into the Jeff Kent dilema. And while Ethier has not done fantastic he is OPSing over .800 with RISP at least.

  22. rodmky@optusnet.com.au

Nice shot Russell .. now all we need is another 2 runs and we’re a chance in this one .. didn’t realise we were 0-29 if we score 2 runs or less.

  23. tradejuanpypaperbag

jhall – this song came on right before my tyraid maybe it was a hint all along – LOL!!! The funny thing is not many words had to be changed – LMAO!!! but still pissed 🙂

    Song: The Devil in Joe
    Original Song: The Devil Inside
    by INXS
    .
    Here comes Juan Pierre
With a look in his eye
    Plays in left field
    With Dre on his mind
    Word from Joe is
    Andre rides pine
    Makes you wonder
How Torre can be so blind
    ( Can be so blind)
    .
    Here comes Andre
With a look in his eye
    Fed on nothing
    But full of pride
    Look at Dre sit
    It makes Russ sick
    Makes you wonder
    How Torre can live
    ( Torre can live)
    .
    The devil in Joe
    The devil in Joe
    The only single reason
Can be the devil in Joe
    .
    The devil in Joe
    The devil in Joe
    The only single reason
Can be the devil in Joe
    .
    Here come the fans
With a look in their eyes
    Look at their faces
    Listen to the yells
    It’s hard to believe
We need a place called hell
    .
    The devil in Joe

It’s pretty awesome what Chan Ho is doing for us this year. Aside from going Karate Kid that one time I always liked him. He was so good for us back in the day.

  25. seeskybout2rain@comcast.net

Most teams won’t have a very good record scoring 2 runs or less. Unless, of course, you have Koufax & Drysdale in their prime.

  26. dodgereric

    The lineup for tonight is:

    Pierre, LF

    Kemp, CF

    Martin, C

    Kent, 2B

    Loney, 1B

    LaRoche, 3B

    Young, RF

    Berroa, SS

    Park, P

Joe: They say we’re old and we can’t see
Anything good about walks or OBP.
Juan: Well I don’t care if all that’s true
‘Cause you got me, and baby I got you
    Juan: Babe
Both: I got you babe I got you babe

Joe: They say our love won’t win no games
But I don’t care if we go down in flames.
    Juan: I guess that’s so, I don’t care either
as long as I get to start instead of Ethier

    Juan: Babe
Both: I got you babe I got you babe

Juan: I got 8….point 8 mil, and I put you…. in my will.
Joe: And when I’m sad, you’re a clown
And if I get scared, you’re always around
Joe: So let them say your hat’s too big
‘Cause I don’t care, let them call me pig
Juan: Then put your little hand in mine
There ain’t no hill or mountain we can’t climb

    Juan: Babe
Both: I got you babe I got you babe

Juan: I got you to write my name
Joe: I got you to lead the game
Juan: I got you to pull up my socks
Joe: I got you to take me on walks

    Both: I got you babe

  27. seeskybout2rain@comcast.net

I keep hoping that some playoff team wannabe will want some speed at the top of their lineup at the deadline and will take Pierre. I can dream, can’t I?

  28. oldbrooklynfan

Based on the present N.L. West standings, the division champ might as well skip the post season.

  29. dodgereric

    Western, that was GREAT!

Nelly, I hope you’re feeling better. It should be theraputic.

Jhall, I am humbled. I don’t know what to say. Other than “Thank you very much!!”

  30. rodmky@optusnet.com.au

    Mate .. that’s not a dream it’s a nightmare … for all the other GM’s that is.

  31. bluecrewgirl

Unfortunately, I think it’s more like a fantasy due to the fact it’s so unlikely to come true with his fat contract.

  32. tradejuanpypaperbag

thanks jhall and eric – yes, I feel better now – thanks and yes, you deserve it!!!
    .
thanks rodmky – loved the band back in college 🙂
    .
enchanted – is it possible DY or Andre can play SS until Furcal comes back because Aw Hell really does suck!!!!

  33. enchantedbeaver

Nice that Kent was able to battle back from that 3-1 count to strike out.

I honestly don’t know why Maza isn’t playing over Berroa nells.

  34. enchantedbeaver

LaRoche will catch the blame for leaving the bases loaded when it was PVL Kant that had the key AB.

  35. rodmky@optusnet.com.au

One day we’ll do something extraordinary with bases loaded and someday I’ll win our lotto and get to visit The Ravine again. I always was a dreamer.

  36. lny4loney

Who the heck called for a bunt with the bases loaded??!!
    .
Nice “situational” hitting by Kent there, huh? He sure is a “veteran” hitter.

  37. oldbrooklynfan

You Can’t say they’re not trying.
2nd game in a row with 3 steals in one inning.
    Didn’t score last night either.

  38. tradejuanpypaperbag

    LMAO!!!!! eric and martinloneykemp 🙂
    .
jhall/eric – I was kicked off my computer after submitting the song – I thought I had been banned – crap!!!! LOL!!!!

  39. mcpheeters@hotmail.com

LaRoche isn’t much better than Dewitt. What happened to Blake by the way? He’s been moved to bench player, although the last game he started, he led the team in RBIs. Way to make the kid confident about his abilities. Sure his June has sucked ***, but he is still one of the most productive players on the team (according to his numbers) and you make him ride the pine. He was hot in may, cold in june; who’s to say he’s not streaky and about to get hot again.

Send him to Triple A, if we’re not going to play him. At least in Vegas he can get some ABs and maybe we can trade him one day, since it is pretty obvious Joe’s going with Andy for the future.

  40. dodgereric

Make sure you keep that new laptop away from the dogs, nelly. They’re going to start associating it with getting yelled at!

  41. rodmky@optusnet.com.au

I don’t think Dewitt has been benched per sae. I just think he is sitting against LH pitching.

  42. dodgereric

Haven’t you been paying attention, mcpheeters? If you have a good game and are 26 or younger, you sit.

  43. tradejuanpypaperbag

LMAO!!! My pets love me – they were just worried and giving me space 🙂 I am the one that feeds them and takes care of them – all is well other than I have to endure the gnat/A’s game which happens to be tied at 1 right now. Go A’s!!!!

  44. mcpheeters@hotmail.com

Dewitt has started one time in a week, went 1-3 with 2b, and 2 RBIs, and it was almost a homer. I guess there has been a ton of LHPs that we’ve played lately.

  45. rodmky@optusnet.com.au

I still can’t work out how JP has any RBI’s .. certainly with 2 out he’s not very effective.

  46. seeskybout2rain@comcast.net

This must be Back To The Future. Park’s pitching like he did in the 90’s….The slogan for the NL West, The Division Noone Wants, should be “I don’t want to go to the playoffs and you can’t make me”

  47. tradejuanpypaperbag

jhall – i know it would be an honor, but I already have too many names. I would have to be formerly known as (dnelson, nelly, dnels, miss debbie and tammy) LMAO!!!. It’s bad enough I have to remember that kpookiemon is kahli and westernmost is old fogey. LOL!!!!
    .
BTW – nice at bat JP – all that practice with pop ups helped today too. 🙂

  48. dodgereric

    Believe it or not, rodmky, he’s 20 for 51 w/RISP (.392) . With 2 outs he’s 8 for 25 (.320).

    A little less now, obviously.

  49. seeskybout2rain@comcast.net

Hell, rod, if I came into money, I’d not only hit Dodger Stadium for about a week or two, I’d do an MLB tour.

  50. rodmky@optusnet.com.au

Thanks for that Eric .. It must be me .. I’ll turn off the game next time he has a chance for an RBI.

You bet Sky. I’d drag the missus kicking and screaming all across the states. Though to be fair she like baseball and we had a great night in 2004. The boys in blue even had a win over the Padres for our 30th wedding anniversary.

  51. mcpheeters@hotmail.com

You’d think Joe would look at the stats every once in awhile.
He’s benching Dewitt against lefties, but Dewitt is only hitting .27 points better against lefties than righties and .62 points better at home. Good call Jose.

    VS. LEFT: .288 / .840 VS. RIGHT: .261 / .688 HOME: .298 / .786 AWAY: .236 / .669

  52. dodgereric

LOL Rod! If it works, it works!

When I was in my teens, I was very superstitious. If a Dodger hit a home run, especially if I was in the park, I wouldn’t move for at least an hour. I figured it was a lucky position.

  53. rodmky@optusnet.com.au

Eric .. we used to have a very strong competition down here. For a number of years we were a AA winter ball league but lack of local TV coverage has meant a decline. We still get visits from scouts as teams are signing quite a few of our youngsters. When I played the only TV coverage of any baseball we got was of the WS. Cable has really given we Aussies as much baseball as we can handle.

  54. enchantedbeaver

I like those lucky positions. At my age though, they don’t come as natural as they used to.

  55. seeskybout2rain@comcast.net

Even though Dewitt’s going through a rough spell right now, he makes better adjustments at the plate than a lot of our kids. He’s also a potential Gold Glover. He’ll be back. That is, if Torre hasn’t already lost faith in him.

  56. jhallwally

You know we need Sweeney to get an AB tonight so he can wake up tomorrow below the Sweeney line. LOL!!

  57. bluecrewgirl

Unless Penny can come back in top form, I’d rather have Park and Stults in the starting lineup over what he’s brought to the table so far this season.

  58. mcpheeters@hotmail.com

I don’t know if DeWitt is going through a rough spell, or if it is simply a little slump. More than likely he was just balancing out from his Rookie of the month performance in May.
I DO think Torre has lost faith in him, which is why I think they should send him down to Vegas to give him more playing time and maybe increase his trade value. And yes he will be a gold glove one day, currently he is #1 in Range Factor for all third basemen in the NL, and 5th in overall Fielding Percentage. But Torre has allowed LaRoche to take th spot.

  59. rodmky@optusnet.com.au

I just wonder how bad you have to be as a PH before you get DFA’d? BTW I’ve turned the picture off whilst JP bats with a RISP.

  60. dodgereric

Sorry jhall, we’ve got to wait one more day. He’s now 6 for 60. Both feet are right on The Sweeney Line.

  61. dodgereric

You know you’re a special hitter when your average is .130 and then goes DOWN for 13 straight appearances!

  62. tradejuanpypaperbag

bluecrewgirl – fits to a tee, and all the articles will reflect how well he plays the game rather than it was just damn luck. saying it with a smile 🙂

  63. tradejuanpypaperbag

jhall – sweeney is probably luckier – who else can say they are still on a team batting .100 – LOL!!! At least Pierre got his legitimate hit tonight, which can’t be said for Sweeeney.

  64. bluecrewgirl

Well, Nelly, hopefully Andre will make the most of the one at bat he will probably get since he’s in the game now. I hate to see him jacked in and out of the lineup. It’s so hard to be consistent under those circumstances.

  65. seeskybout2rain@comcast.net

Sweeney’s got pictures of the Nedster…Falkenborg’s got a nice hook.Had good numbers at Vegas. Anybody would be an improvement over Proctor.

  66. tradejuanpypaperbag

NELLY IS VERY VERY HAPPY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!
    ANDRE EVERETT ETHIER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #7

  67. dodgereric

I just used a function on baseball-reference.com. It lets you select different criteria for baseball statistics. This is the search I just tried:

Time frame: Single season, from 1901 to 2008
    Position: anyone but the pitcher
    60 plate appearances or more
    .100 BA or less

Results: One player. In 108 years. Ron Karkovice, 1987ChiSox

I’ll wait while nellie jumps up and down for Andre………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..that’s long enough.

Karkovice hit .071 in 95 PAs. He was 6 for 85 with 2HRs and 40 Ks.

Since it looks like we’re stuck with him, maybe Sweeney can make some history.

  68. northstateblues

“This is the happiest this joint’s been in weeks!” – Steiner’s call

Way to go Andre!!!!! Let’s get this win!

  69. boblee14@yahoo.com

And this kid is not playing everyday, Why. If he played everyday he would be leading the team in HR’s, & RBI’S

  70. boblee14@yahoo.com

Andre was the best player we had coming out of spring training and I still think he’s the best now but Jojo has lost confidence in him

  71. tradejuanpypaperbag

Dodgereric – it was more like cheering as if I were at the game, and may I remind you – in this house the gnats are losing, so it made it even more dramatic LMAO!!!!!!

  72. oldbrooklynfan

    B R O X T O N I Z E D
I feel so good about ETHIER’S HR.
    Talk about mancruch.
    I’m elated.
    HE NEEDS TO PLAY EVERDAY.

  73. jhallwally

One for Nelly and all the great gals on ITD.

    Andre 16©
Sung to Christine Sixteen by Kiss.

He’s got Nelly dizzy, she’s behind him to the end.
He’s got the gals at ITD and they’re p*ssed when he’s not playin’.

    Andre, 16, Andre, 16.

It drives Nell’ crazy, when he ain’t playin’ everyday.
Joe will play Phew every day and night,
    There’s no doubt about it.

    Andre….16, Andre….16

Ned and JoJo got no faith in kids his age.
    But when we see Phew.
Coming out to left each day, each day,
we know, we know, got to have,
    Dre’, ITD gals love you.

He’s been around 3 years, still young and lean.
Joe still sits him, can’t live without Phew, whoo-no.

    Andre….16, Andre….16.
    Andre, Andre, 16, 16.
    Andre, everyday.
    So lean, Andre, 16, 16
    Andre, so cute.
    Andre, yeah, Andre, yeah, yeah

I remember Karkovice. Backup catcher more noted for his defense. Unlike Sweeney who isn’t noted for much of anything these days.

  75. bluecrewgirl

Great job, jhall. Pierreseastmeetswest, I couldn’t agree with you more. He definitely needs to play everyday. He was batting over .300 until Torre starting messing with him.

It’s 3.25 on a nice Saturday afternoon .. the Dodgers win and that’ll make the drinks taste even better. Have fun gang .. until next time.

That song list is pretty incredible, not only the number of songs, but the effort in doing songs for every aspect of our beloved Dodgers (good and bad) to all these people on this board. The genres that have been touched so far, and I can only imagine what’s ahead especially with trade deadlines and I’m sure more pianos falling. Expect a happy song for morning music – boy, how one hit changes thinking is pretty amazing (jk). I was just happy to see Andre in the game – even if it was for a couple of innings.

  86. tradejuanpypaperbag

don’t you just love this statement by Pierre of all people 🙂
    .

Left fielder Juan Pierre said it was particularly important that the Dodgers emulated the Angels, as the bulk of the Dodgers lineup consists of young players who can’t be counted on to hit for power.

“These guys are going to hit for power, but you can’t expect them to do it now, especially in Dodger Stadium where you have veterans who don’t hit the ball out,” he said. “While you’re patient on that power, they can learn to run the bases and take the extra base like the Angels. I think it’ll be good if we can do the type of things the Angels can do.”

    Patrick O’neal
    Steve Lyons
    Ned Colletti

O’neal: Ned, thanks a lot for taking the time to be with us.

    Colletti: You’re welcome.

O: We appreciate it. Are you the type of general manager that will look back at this game and appreciate it or are you already looking forward to tomorrow and what has to be done?

C: We’re always looking ahead. I think Billy Martin had it the best. When you lose a game you’re miserable until the first pitch of the next game. And when you win a game you’re happy for about 15 minutes and then you’re miserable until the first pitch of the next game.

O: That 15 minutes probably just ended.

Lyons: Ned when you look at this division and the entire division has struggled, does that make it more difficult to evaluate how good your ballclub is and move it forward?

C: I think what makes it difficult to evaluate us right now, Steve is that we’re so banged up. When you think about having Furcal out and I know Jones wasn’t productive but having Jones healthy and productive and of course Nomar you have 3 everyday players who we haven’t been playing with for quite a while now. And then you’ve got Kuroda and Penny as well and Schmidt and so if we could get healthy we could get a feel for where we’re really at.

L: When you get those guys back will you feel like you made a bunch of deadline moves?

C: I tell you, there won’t be many teams who can aquire 5 or 6 guys like that in a trade. Hopefully we’re getting those guys.

L: I tell you Ned, there’s an awful lot of salary there that you have not been able to play with.

C: Hey thanks for bringing that up.

L: The fact that you’re able to scratch and claw and stay within fighting distance with this guy (they’re showing Furcal taking infield) I believe the key injury that you’ve had to withstand.

C: There’s no question. When we originally signed him it was to provide a spark at the top of the order and to be a middle of the diamond type player. We’ve missed him every day he’s been gone. He’s a special player and he’s somebody that loves to play. And his excitement and what he brings to our ballclub is also what we’re lacking. It’s not just what he brings to the order or the field. It’s who he is.

L: I think we’re talking about 2 positions. We look at Furcal and Andruw Jones up the middle. Last year two of the things that really needed to be addressed was fundamental baseball and defense. You had that with Furcal and Jones up the middle playing defense and now they’re both gone. And that kind of puts the team back to where it was last year almost with the fundamentals and defense.

C: We haven’t played very well, especially in some of those areas for the last month or six weeks. It’s been a struggle admittedly. Hopefully we can weather it and play better. And just getting those players back doesn’t guarantee anything. We still have to play better. We can’t worry about what AZ is doing and we can’t worry about SF or Colorado, or SD. We have to do better. We have to play better. We have to have better at bats. And you talk about playing time. You mentioned that when we first came on the air and playing time is an issue early in the season for some players. They value the playing time. Well, you know what, value every at bat, value every pitch of every at bat. Because it is what it is.

O: Look, with Andruw Jones, does he, I mean Furcal gets his job back. How is Andruw going to get himself back in the lineup?

C: We’re going to leave that up to Joe. But, I tell you what, as unproductive as he was offensively and there’s no question there’s no denying it, he’ll tell you the same thing. His presence did one thing. It created competition.

    O: Right

    L: That’s always good.

C: You have to have it. You’re better to have 8 all stars or 8 guys going to the hall of fame..(unintelligible)

L:It has been difficult knowing with all the injuries you’ve had here but, you brought in a new manager, half of a new coaching staff. Have they done the job you’ve looked for them to do, given the fact that half the guys you’ve given them aren’t out there every day?

C: I think they’ve done a very good job. Let’s look at the Cubs from a year ago. Lou Pinella, another manager probably going to the Hall Of Fame like Joe. I don’t know off the top of my head, but I’m pretty sure they were under .500 most of the year all the way into September, as deep as 6 or 7 games below .500. It takes time. Joe has to learn a new league, he’s learned a lot of players. And also when you have as many players with as little major league experience as you’ve got here, even if you’ve been here for a while you’re still learning.

O: Lastly, it’s good to have you out here, with the starting rotation up to the break, Joe can maybe go to a six man rotation considering Kuroda comes back healthy. With Clayton Kershaw, can we talk about him as well? Still looking for his first win. Is it beneficial for him to remain with the club for the rest of the year and so on?

C: It remains to be seen. He’s done well, he hasn’t done poorly. You have to remember that he’s 20 years old. And his experience includes just a couple of months at AA. He could use a break. He could use some run support. He could pitch without having to be so fine every pitch every time out. But he’s gonna have a great career. We’ll see what happens the next few weeks or a month or whatever. It doesn’t hurt to send him back, I’m not saying we’re going to send him back, but whatever’s best for the organization and best for the player that’s what we’ll end up doing.

L: We talked about him a couple of months ago and we’ve seen exactly that. He’s gonna struggle a bit with his command but the Dodgers have only scored 8 runs in his 7 starts. If they get him some runs, he could be 5 and 0.

    C:Exactly.

O: Thanks, Ned for being with us.

    C: My pleasure.

  90. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

just got back from the game. it was a GREAT game. we played pretty close to flawless today. russell absolutely crushed his homerun, and so did andre. chanho was dealin’~ all in all a great game.

i will have to say that i predicted sweeney’s strikeout. not that it’s such an incredible prediction, i’m sure we all saw it coming.

also, i thought it was odd to pinch hit stults with dewitt left on the bench, but he did have a good offensive game the other day. and since torre continues to love sweeney, stults’ numbers must look fantastic in comparison..

  91. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

oh and dnelson, i do not like russell’s new facial hair, but he played really well today, so it can stay.. haha

i went early to catch BP today, and when the dodgers came out to stretch, russell was right near us. we yelled for him and he looked up smiled and waved. and i saw the facial hair and was like, oh geez.. haha

  92. saralovesrussell@losangeles-dodgers.net

btw, everyone, don’t forget to watch this week in baseball tomorrow for an inside look profile of our fave lil’ boys in blue 🙂

eric thanks for the colletti questions 🙂
    .
sara – I’m glad you got to see the Dodgers win and Russell and Andre hit their homeruns – jealous 🙂 It’s okay – I will be there a week from Monday to see them face the Braves – can’t wait!
    .
ndeschenens – you are welcome 🙂

  95. leekfink

I want to respond to miketink’s now infamous “cult” post from a couple of days ago. I have not been around because I try to ignore interleague play (as much as possible, given my particular addiction), and I have been planning a move and starting a new job.
    .
First, miketink’s no joeyp–he’s a real fan, and has been posting here, occassionally, for a couple of years–probably longer than me. It’s probably a little over-the-top to call us a cult (cult’s typically have charismatic leaders who impose their views, rather than people who came to the view on thier own). But come on–it’s not like a lot of people don’t make over-the-top comments. And I would rather not run off real Ddoger fans just because they have a differnt viewpoint.
    .
Substantively, miketink, I was obviously also being over-the-top too. But, I am really worried. There are legitimate reasons to favor Kent and Pierre and justify their playing time. I don’t agree with them for the most part (for Pierre, it’s causign havoc when he gets on base, for Kent it’s because he is a guy who will turn it around), but if Torre were to say this, I could understand it. But that’s not the basis of what he’s saying. He explains that he likes what they are doing–and implicitly that others should follow suit. But when the numbers are showing that Pierre and Kent are doing the worst on the team, it worries me that the manager is holding them up as the example. We’re nearly halfway through the season, so I don’t think that the statistics are just a fluke.
    .
In 1998, I lived in New York and my roommate was the most rabid Yankees fan I ever knew. And as the Yankees were on their way to the most wins in history and a world championship (and even over the next two years, as they won 3 championships and 4 pennants in a row), he kept complaining that Torre was an awful manager. And this was a not uncommon sentiment in New York.
    .
Torre has been celebrated as a guy who can impose an ethic on a team, but his models are not producing. He has been trumpeted as a great communicator, but he could not communicate with Kuroda or Proctor about injuries. I’m really starting to worry that those Yankees fans were right.
    .
I gave Torre a lot of credit and cut him a lot of slack to start the season, and if the Dodgers win the division, he will have earned it back. But right now . . . not so much.
    .
Anyway, I want to contribute this thought on the Kershaw debate. He clearly has big league stuff. That’s established. In a couple of years, he’ll be ace quality (Koufax, remember, was called up in 1955, and was not until 1959 that he started dominating). It’s also clear that he is not that ace yet, and needs some time to develop. But, he may be so much better than AA hitters that it’s not real competition. And you need that competition to learn–his pick-off move stinks because in high school he never had any base runners to pick-off. So, he may be at the point where the only place he can really learn is the majors. It is just too easy to get AA hitters to chase high fastball, knee-buckling curve. He has to face big leaguers who are going to foul off that curve and who can catch up with the fastball.

  96. iheartaethier16@yahoo.com

just got home from the game tonight.. I know a little late/early in the morning? It’s funny I get home & the first thing I do is come here to leave my thoughts on the game.. I’ve always been a Dodger’s fan since I’ve known about baseball when I was about 10 or 11? (I’m 21 now!) and I would go to games here & there when I’d have the time but not nearly as hardcore as I have been since 2006 when Andre got here.. I know.. but at least I’ve always been all about our boys in blue & never have jumped onto some other bandwagon & hey I had to start somewhere… My mom’s a little worried that I’d be this hardcore about baseball but.. I do what I love… anyways…
    .
So earlier in the day I posted about how I hoped Andre would be in today’s lineup & when I saw that he wasn’t I was pretty upset… but I sat behind the dugout today so I can’t complain that he was benched cus I was right behind him 🙂 then all of a sudden before my eyes he’s up to pinch hit! I’m so happy I saw him hit that homerun I can’t even explain .. I just wanted to say HA HA HA in your face Torre, that’s what you get for benching him against lefties.. . everyone in my section was all crazyyy over Ethier with me 🙂 Then I moved and went to sit in right field behind him… hehe & it was soo good to see Saito saving the game!! YAY 🙂 it was sucha good feeling watching the expressions on them Angels fans … haha.. I still can’t get over Andre’s night!!!
    .
SO SWEENEY, wow.. How does Torre do this? is he that blind? I wonder if Sweeney is even humiliated that he’s that horrible of a baseball player.. & not to mention when he was at bat he tripped over himself? or something.. but wow.. how FACE SLAPPING EMBARRASSING for him, I feel bad for the man…
    .

Martin- exceptional like always, yes his new facial hair design is a little .. off but it’s good to see CHANGE, something TORRE should think about ONCE in awhile… is that just too much to ask for?
    .

Proctor is doing better? heck if we care, it’s better he’s on the DL maybe he’ll jst stay on it til seasons over then he can retire n go do something he’s actually good at…
    .
dnelly- I’ll always be for the dodgers & for Andre 🙂 but did you see a recap of Grady Sizemore’s catch today.. they called him spiderman 🙂 that was cute! haha..
    .
*and just to update everyone on my location… I’m from LA… born & raised baby! 🙂 20 minutes away from Chavez Ravine…
    .
Oh and when Gary Matthews was up to bat…. everyone in my section (when I moved to right field by Ethier) was chanting booooo steroids.. booo.. or something I can’t really remember but it was sooooo FUNNY…
    .
the animosity wasn’t AS extreme as I thought it would be though.. didn’t see as many fights like I thought I would.. but it was still there & intense.. GOOD ONE DODGERS.. we still have 2 more to go… let’s sweeeeep them n kick them back to the OC…. =)
    .

Okay I gotta go to bed now one more game to catch tomorrow & ANDRE BETTER BE IN THE LINEUP or else I’m going to throw my shoe at Torre tomorrow & it will be worth being kicked out & banned from dodger stadium……… actually it may not but.. I’m sure I’ll be doing everyone a HUGE favor. HA HA Kidding, I don’t want to make him lose any more common sense…. =)

  97. tradejuanpypaperbag

iheartaethier ~ let’s just say I was not happy that Ethier was not in the game once again, but when I noticed he was in the game in the 7th Iwas just happy he got playing time. I knew you were there and I was happy about that. When he got up, truthfully, it was one of those moments I was hoping it wasn’t him 2 outs and 2 men on, and PHing in general hasn’t been our strong suit (Sweeney), not to mention our issues with RISP, and I woud have felt the same way if it was DeWitt up there. I knew the minute the ball hit the bat, it was gone, as I am sure everyone watching at home knew too – bluegrewgirl and I probably screamed loud enough that everyone on this board at the time knew it. Like I said up above – it was Ethier’s way of saying “up yours Torre” and that’s saying it nicely as to not get kicked off this board. Anyhow – glad you had fun, saralovesrussell was there too and she had just as much fun watching Russell have a very good Russell night. 🙂

    Good Morning Dodger Blue Fans!
It is always a good feeling to wake up and know your Dodgers did a magnificent job the night before. What a game that was!!! Once again, a total team effort with pitching, hitting and defense all showing up in the same game. Let’s hope they take the win yesterday, along with the win against the White Sox on Wednesday, and use those experiences to carry them through the rest of this freeway series. This morning’s song is very self-indulgent, but Andre’s homerun was all I kept thinking about so naturally it lead to a song about him, and you don’t always come across a phrase that you can actually use his last name, Ethier.
    .
    Song: ‘Dre Ethier
    Original Song: “Maneater”
    by Hall and Oates
    .
    Will ‘Dre play tonight?
    The lean and hungry type
    Nothing is new,
    We’ve seen him here before
    Watching and waiting
    Dre’s sitting again
But his eyes we still adore
So many have paid to see
Who do they think we’ve came here to see?
    It’s not Pierre
Who in left field has no arm
Money’s the matter, Dre’s love of the game
    Isn’t gonna take him far
    .
    Oh,oh here he comes
Watch out fans, Dre’s coming up
    Oh,oh here he comes
    ‘Dre Ethier
    .
    Oh,oh here he comes
Watch out fans, Dre’s coming up
    Oh, oh here he comes
    ‘Dre Ethier
    .
He’d play if we were you
We know what ‘Dre can do
    He’s “Everyday ‘Dre”
And he could really rip that ball apart
    Mind over matter
    The beauty is there
And the game is in his heart
    .
    Oh, oh here he comes
Watch out fans, Dre’s coming up
    Oh, oh here he comes
    ‘Dre Ethier
    .
    Oh, oh here he comes
Watch out fans, Dre’s coming up
    Oh, oh here he comes
    ‘Dre Ethier

Josh’ description of Proctor is the typical sugar-coating that one expects from the Dodger FO PR oriented spin factory.
As far as I’m concerned “Proctor isn’t worth a Betemit”.
I hope they have to leave him on the DL, and with the trade deadline approaching we hopefully never see him again in a Dodger uniform.

Now Sweeney is another matter. He’s beyond belief, but obviously Torre will insist that he continue embarrasing himself for the rest of the season.

Nice win last night! The Dodgers are only 2 games down in the lost column. Does anyone doubt that Torre’s handling of our young players has cost us MANY more losses than that? We could now have a very comfortable lead in the NL West right now if we had a manager and General Manager who knew how to utilize the talent the Dodgers have.

  101. dodger 32

Those that don’t learn from history are condemned to repeat it. If somethings not working, try something else. I wonder if Torre ever thinks about that? The Dodgers are 10 games under 500 since he put Pierre in the lead off spot. Why not try something different? It’s not like Pierre is such a great offensive or defensive player that he would be missed in the line up. Both DY and Ethier are both upgrades, is Torre blind or just dumb or both? Also how bad does Sweeney have to be to be kicked to the curb? He’s now at the Sweeney line, and a pitcher would be a better choice to pinch hit.

  102. jungar@wsgcorp.com

The boss still owes a player 25 million over 3 years and cant get rid of him and I wonder if he is even trying he is so dang Myopic about his PVL’s. And he is hitting “as expected”. His numbers are what they have been 3 years running. So what’s a manager to do? Now I know your first reaction is the logical one, play the best player…but you can’t tell me, as I said with Grady, that Torre would rather play Pierre over Ethier.

Torre (and Grady) has seen to much GOOD basbeabll right? I mean were not all smarter than him about the game? 10 walks and a .299 OBP in 48 Games up top? Struggling offense? it boggles the mind.

But it’s cool soon i’ll get to complain about Nomar and Jones crapping all over the place and taking playing time from Andy or DeWitt and Ethier and Kemp(because it wont be Pierre fellas) so I got that to look forward to.

  103. swood@rcn.com

Furcal coming back can only help the dodgers. The same can be said for Nomar and even Jones if they are utilitzed properly. I’m still picking the D’s to win the division this year.

  104. enchantedbeaver

Its going to be painful to watch the kids playing time get cut back if/when Jones & Co get back. Nomore’s a non issue in my book because we all know that within 2 weeks tops he’ll find himself back on the DL. I agree swood, Ferk can only help the team. Jones is the wild card. If he’s last year’s version, he can probably help. If he’s the April-May version, we’re right back where we started.

What I’m curious about is who get’s cut. Maza definately, though I’d rather they dump Berroa since he’s totally worthless. LaRoche probably sees Vegas again. The ONLY other choice should be Sweeney.

Sad thing is, is that this division is so weak that even PVLs playing mediocre competative baseball could just win it. Then all we’ll have is a self-congratulatory GM, the media hailing Torre as the new L.A. savior, and a bunch of kids that have gotten just another half year of experience so that we get to do it all over again in 2009 since it takes our management 2 years to get them 1 years worth of playing time.

  105. jungar@wsgcorp.com

But they won’t be. And they will give Nomar two weeks to flail around. Furcal is solid if healthy. Jones, even a bad Jones is an upgrade over Pierre as long as Ethier and Kemp play, but it wont happen. Pierre will hit 2nd the rest of the year once Furcal comes back.

I wonder where Andruw’s weight stands right now, not that it is of any concern to Andruw – probably Ned and Torre don’t care either. I have to wonder whether our team requires any kind of conditioning before and during the season. For that matter, I’m also wondering where Penny’s weight stands. I’ve always thought that his performance issues have a lot to do with his being overweight.

messagebear – I was going to ask the question if anybody has seen Andruw and what he looks like? Even last night, we saw Furcal and Nomar hanging on the railing, but I don’t remember seeing Andruw.
    .
As far as Pierre, I guess we will find out how important he really is to Torre once our lead off man is back. I forsee him continuing to play left and Kemp, Ethier and Young sharing right (that sounds so wrong – LOL) at least until they give Andruw a couple of weeks to show if he’s improved or not. Hopefully Joe doesn’t take the Sweeney approach where we have to suffer watching Andruw dive to the Sweeney line too, which from where he left off, may not take long if he doesn’t come back healthy and in shape.
    .
Then again, they all have to go through rehab assignment so who knows what can happen there – good and bad, depending on perspective.

Are you having problems posting? It’s running really slow 🙂
    .
messagebear – I was going to ask if there have been any
Andruw sightings – I haven’t seen any signs of him in the dugout because they even showed Furcal and Normar hanging on the rail last night.

Is this blog working yet? I have been trying to get on since about 11:00 when messagebear left post 🙂

I, like most everyone else, would like to see the kids play more. But you really can’t lay our lack of performance in the first half of this season at the feet of Pierre. Like it or not ,( and I don’t) Pierre is just being Pierre. If you blame anyone, you blame management for playing him as much as they do. He’s just not a good fit for this team. If he was on a team like Boston, for example, that has a high level of offensive firepower, his shortcomings (no power, OPB, and weak arm) are considerably less visible and less crucial. What he does do well, he doesn’t do often enough. Furcal’s absence has been a killer; Furcal 16 rbis in 32 games, his replacements 4 in 47 games. That doesn’t even take into account his leadership skills. I agree that Maza should be kept instead of Berroa. For whatever the reason, Sweeney has lost it and should be gone. DY or even Lindsay down in Vegas could do better as our first bat off the bench. When Nomar comes back, he’ll be taking time from players who are our future. He should be a backup and nothing more. I’m not confident that Jones will be productive when he gets back. He doesn’t seem willing to make the adjustments, baseball or physically-wise, to remain competitive. He seems to prefer relying almost exclusively on his now declining skills to his (and our) detriment. We need to be focused on getting better for next year and the years that follow, not making extraordinary efforts to win now.

looks like our boys are not the only ones experimenting with facial hair.. just saw something about jason giambi, and he shaved himself a little mustache.. and he had a good game, so he said it would stay.. haha

btw, dnelly, your boy andre was named a-hole of the moment on dodgerblues.com =P

oh, and on the this week in baseball profile of the dodgers.. i’d like to point out that they did not speak of, or even interview a single vet. it was all about the kids. good to watch a dodger piece and not have to see kent, pierre, or anyone else..

  114. rintinjim310@yahoo.com

Sweeney. 100 at bats. 1 hit. 19 stike outs.
Still Joe’s 1st choice to PH and still on the roster!

sara – I saw profile – it was good but I wanted to see more of the young kids, but I guess that’s what you get when the Dodger’s have so much history. Also, this morning on ESPN classic, they were doing the highlights of that World Series game in 1988 when Gibson hit that homerun – that brings back memories.

  119. tradejuanpypaperbag

sara – I have to admit, it’s the first time I’ve been on Dodgerblues site. After being on that sight, I don’t worry about this board getting out of control so much anymore – lol!!! thanks for the update on Andre – it wasn’t as bad as what I was expecting – thanks 🙂

are you using for this website? I’m getting fed up of WordPress because I’ve had problems with hackers and I’m looking at alternatives for another platform. I would be fantastic if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
