Rain…
It’s coming down pretty hard outside so I’m guessing the first pitch will be delayed, if the game gets in at all. Most talk is that we’d play a day-night double header tomorrow if we don’t get this one in, but as I type this in the clubhouse, everyone is preparing to play at 3:55 as scheduled. I guess that’s how you have to do it to stay ready to go.
Speaking of rain (this is arguably my worst transition ever), tickets for the Madonna show at Dodger Stadium on Nov. 6 go on sale tomorrow. She once had a song called “Rain.” Anyway, she’ll join a long list of incredible musicians to play at Dodger Stadium as part of the “Sweet & Sticky Tour”…what else can I say? I figured maybe some of you are big fans, right?
Moving on…it was 31 years ago today that Joe Torre the player became Joe Torre the manager and in fact, he was both at the same time for a few weeks. He’s gone on to become the only person in big league history with 2,000 hits as a player and 2,000 wins as a manager, which is a truly impressive feat.
For the Dodger history buffs, that same day J.R. Richard threw a complete game against the Dodgers in a 5-2 Houston win.

MLK, I saw your post from a couple of days ago about the universities. If I get into USC I will go there, 2nd choice would be Pepperdine and 3rd would be San Diego. Now as for the Dodgers, DFA Sweeney, bring up Rep from AAA, put him in center with Kemp in right and Ethier in left and bat Rep leadoff until Furcal gets back.
The AL Homerun leaders and RBI leaders are both young players who were traded for last year and both make less than a million dollars each. Or you can buy 17 of em if you can find em for one Andruw Jones.
Josh Hamilton and Carlos Quentin both have more 14 and 13 homeruns each and all 4 of our OF (Jones, Pierre, Kemp and Ethier) have 9 and Hamilton has 58 rbi and our entire OF combined has 70
So these are moves that could have been made but weren’t and that’s just for starters. There are lots of examples on smaller scale.
It gets my goat when I read articles blaming youth. I want to be clear that I a. realize the kids do make mistakes and b. don’t excuse them for them but it pisses me off that our GM lets this go public and that the press and the writers don’t say something like your leadoff guy in the last 23 games is getting on at .287 clip and has 1 extra base hit. And how your clean up man or 3 hole hitter has a .291 obp and 12 extra base hits for the year. 12. for the year. clean up.

thanks for thinking about me and our program. We had parents going through tons of film, and a few are bringing us discs, so as soon as they bring them, I will be able to send pictures. I took pictures also, but they were pre-show, and they don’t show the full affect of the crowd we had. We had multi-generation family members there.

Also, I had a chance to read the fox article that was talked about yesterday. Between all the songs and friendly banter, I didn’t realize the conversation between Andre and Torre was a real one. When I read it last night, my first thought was, you guys weren’t joking around. I don’t know who to be angry with, Joe for asking him the questions, or the journalist who published it. For all that Andre has been through these past three years, and now, especially this year, I can totally see why he answered the questions the way he did. Andre is a player who is trying to prove to Torre/Ned that he belongs out there (vs. Pierre/Jones), and I would think that being out there everyday is his personal goal right now (to get my hits so I can stay in the lineup). I am not saying he doesn’t care about the team winning (of course, he does), but if Torre had asked Loney or Martin the same questions, they may have responded the way Torre wanted because they are not currently fighting for a position. Sorry for the long post, but it makes me mad when they pick on the young players like that.

Hey Nelly. Heck of a comeback win last night, eh. That article was/is BS. Stuff like that is better kept internal. It is total crap that they don’t mention the crummy performances by the PVL’s. And the fact that they talk like we need Nomore and Jones to hurry back from the DL before we will be any good is a freaking joke. We’re better off with them on the DL. I hope they never come off it. Matter of fact, I wish Phew and Kent would join them.
I just read the Fox article and I am not sure what to make of it. Ken Rosenthal is a respected writer so I have to assume he pretty much wrote what was said. However, it is hard for me to believe that the younger players don’t know who Joe Torre is or what he has done. You don’t think they were curious as soon as Torre’s signing was announced? I know I would have been looking for all sorts of information if I were a member of the team trying to find out what makes him tick. We all know these younger players have not learned how to win yet but I was kind of hoping Torre and Bowa could lead them and it would be nice if the veterans had the right personalities to lead as well.

Our PVL’s (Kent, Phew, Nomore, etc…) only care about their playing time and where they bat in the order. They are not leaders or mentors. They’re bums in my opinion.
lbirken – that’s what’s missing is leadership from the vets/management. The vets aren’t even setting examples right now (out on the field or in the clubhouse), much less being leaders. Like many of us have said, if you are going to bring up the problems with the young boys, then make it fair and talk about how the vets suck right now, too (they are losing games for us also, and they are making errors and their averages are not exactly up to par – some not even close).

It would be nice to have announcers that are on our side for a change – why do we always get screwed in that department (I can use more colorful language on the weekends – no kids looking over my shoulder – lol). The gnat announcers are more unbiased than these two and I have to listen to them everyday.
I will admit to being a Jeff Kent and Nomar fan but I am also realistic in that it is clear their skills have declined. But I have a question: when does a “young” player become a “veteran”?
Most people consider 27/28-32/33 to be a players prime years. I would guess that after a player has over 3 years of service time they would/should be considered a vet. I consider Martin a young’un right now and after this season I would consider him a young vet. Same with Ethier. Kemp, Billz, and Loney should be considered vets after next season in my opinion. Good part is, we will be loaded with young veterans in a couple of years instead of old veterans. Big difference.
Sure hope we can get a few more insurance runs.

Question to those of you that have (or had) kids that play ball:
We live in a small city (large town) in the central valley in California, and there isn’t any places for kids to go for batting practice or pitching instruction other than a few batting cages (with limited access). My husband and my son’s pitching coach really think we need a facility that would provide batting/pitching instruction to our community of future ball players. We were at a great one two weekends ago in Palm Springs, but we were wondering what you have experienced in terms of these facilities like this. The one we went to in Palm Springs had batting cages, pitching mounds and both could utilize machines or “live” pitching/batting. They designed it like a club where you paid monthly, but allowed for guests. We live near the closed down Castle Air Force Base, and there are many buildings (and even fields) that can be renovated for this purpose.
My husband blogs on a site which consists of cen-cal coaches/parents, etc., but since this group is from everywhere, he wanted me to ask for your expertise and/or input.

Also, jhall, as for my husband’s vision – he has had this in his head since my son became a real pitcher (my son is a freshman version of Kershaw – a lefty with a nasty curve ball, plus 3 other pitches already, and this isn’t just a proud mom talking – he really does have the stuff), and on top of that, he wants to continue my father-in-law’s (and my father’s) vision of getting as many young boys involved in baseball, and now because of technology, there’s ways of doing things in the off season when going outside isn’t an option. He needs to do it, and I want him to do it, but he’s worried about the economy like who isn’t.

Yes, Brox had another meltdown, but I think Torre is overusing him. Look how many games he has been in lately. Torre seems to have a problem with how he overuses some relief pitchers. He did that to Proctor last year in New York. He also stubbornly refuses to use Young. I don’t know why. Young could play LF (or 2B when Kent is out) and provide a needed bat in this scoring drought. But no, Torre knows best. So chalk up another loss to Joe for his arrogant and ill-conceived player decisions. With better management, this team could be in First Place right now! Don’t blame the kids. The blame rests solely with Ned and Joe.

What a frustrating game. Brox needs to be taken out of the setup role until he can string together a couple of good outings because he’s killing us right now. Great performance by Billzz, but again our offense left us no margin for error even against a mediocre pitcher. I don’t know about you guys but this team is frustrating the hell out of me.
BTW Nelly, I saw your comment from the last thread and I am not a teacher, I’m a student.
saralovesrussell and MLK- I am talking about undergrad and I would love to go to USC but I doubt I will be able to get in because my GPA is not up to their standards. Too many nights staying up until 1 AM watching the D’s play. =) I think there is a much better chance I will go to either Pepperdine or University of San Diego, or even Arizona State(close to the new ST complex?).
I agree Shad that Torre is not overusing Brox, Brox simply isn’t performing. His slider to Beltran even though it was in off the plate didn’t have much movement, and the pitch to Tatis was right in the heart of the plate.

Pepperdine is beautiful, and I have heard great things about University of San Diego (the private one, right?). UC San Diego is also great. My brother in-law graduated from USC (back in the late 80’s), and it’s still one of my favorites. However, Arizona State wouldn’t be bad. You would be in good company – Andre’s an alumni, and he was very impressive ball player there as well (his wife, Maggie, coaches gymnastics there, too). Plus, all these schools have great collegiate baseball teams (Pepperdine and ASU are both in the finals for the regionals and ASU will probably go to the NCAA world series).
I don’t think you can go wrong with any of those choices.
Yeah Nelly, good old red, white, and blue. Can’t go wrong there. Have to look up some good old WWII bomber nose art and names/sayings they put with them. Use the picture and put a baseball uniform on them with a bat or glove. There were some really neat ones. You can probably just type it in your search window and get a whole bunch of them. Wow, are you going to have fun.

Are you a graphic artist? – you talk like one; that’s what my brother does down in Palm Springs. My dad is the real artist – He can paint anything on a wall and make it look real.
No I’m not. I can draw fairly well and enjoy music (haha) and art. If your father can paint, you’ve got it made. The possibilities are unlimited.
Just one question, is Torre going to use Kuo again before this series is over?
And offense-wise, I understand Torre’s need to give every player chances to prove themselves, but sometimes the best thing to do is to sit them out for a while. Use common sense and do what it takes to win the games.

Upton and Jackson just hit back to back home runs – dbacks winning 3-0 – yuck!!! However, Jackson and Upton are on my fantasy team so I just got a few points. I had Upton on the bench because my original outfield was Ethier, Jones and Kemp. Even I knew to bench Jones after the first week lol!

dbacks just got another homerun (young) – all runs have been solo home runs – haven’t had a base runner yet. I guess that’s a way to not have to worry about RISP – just hit all homeruns – lol! Oh, I forgot – Andre’s (and the rest of the young boys) are not allowed to think about hitting homeruns, but I bet Justin Upton thinks about it all the time.
sorry, misinformation – reynolds (not jackson) had 2 homeruns, but he is also on my fantasy team – Dodger’s didn’t have a 3rd basemen when I drafted so I went with reynolds and adkins.
Broxton Blew it, Sammy blew it, they don’t hit. What’s the difference, right now this team is not very good. Torre is no different from a lot of managers, he’s not worth 4 mil either.
Watching ESPN baseball highlights does make me feel a little better. Even though we lost, we are still 2nd in our division (looking down on the gnats), and it could be worse – we could be Detroit fans, Rox fans, KC fans, Seattle fans and even Yankee fans. Considering how we have been playing
, we should be thankful we are not in the position any of those teams are in – the Dodgers can still see the light at the top of the west division. It’s got to be a better view then where the rox are sitting right now. With that being said, I am signing off for the night. I have been at work this whole time doing 1400 ribbons for field day on Tuesday, and that is just the beginning of the countless other things I have to do before then.

shad78, that’s fine if you want to defend Torre, but he’s the one that makes up the lineups and decides on the pitching changes. Despite offensive problems, Torre refuses to play Young to generate more offense. Brox pitched on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and now Saturday. That’s five out of seven days. During that stretch he has 3 blown saves. With that recent track record, it was foolish to leave him in the game when he got in trouble. So in my book, Torre deserves the blame.
More on overusing Brox, his ERA when he’s pitching with no days’ rest is 5.87, compared to 1.59 with one day rest.
Andy LaRoche played 2B for Las Vegas today. Hmmmmmm.
The Dodgers final 18 batters were retired in a row. That speaks of impatience. Even if they can’t hit their way out of a paper bag right now you’d figure they could sprinkle a walk somewhere!!?!?! Every day DeWitt plays solid ball. Bat him in the two hole with Kemp three. Kemp flourished there during the eight game streak. Don’t know why Joe has to tinker endlessly. I dare him to try a set line-up for one solid week.

Truth be told, I pretty much knew we were screwed when with Ethier and DeWitt on in the 4th, the next three batters were Maza, Billz, and Juanpy.

After a nice little start, Maza has shown why he has spent eight years in the minors. His average is now down to .257. I admire the guy’s diligence, and heck it’s starting to pay off — he’s earned … what? … $50,000 for the last three weeks. More power to him. But the reality is he has no serious major league future.

Please, oh please, you vet-lovin’ GM, don’t trade away good pieces for a very short-term need at shortstop or the middle infield. At short, we can get by with Hu — Hu isn’t hitting great but sure does field nicely. Hu’ll be alright. And at second, you have at least three good options to spell old man Kent — Delwyn, Andy, and Blake.
dodgereric…speaking of LaRoche, DeWitt played 2B for a season…here’s a guy who’ll win the batting crown someday…but he’s muffed more than a few key plays at third. You hope Ned will wise up (sorry Ned) and get both these kids in the line-up, with maybe DeWitt at second. With the Dodgers committed to youth, they might as well jump in and be done with it. Let Kent chase his ring in the American League. Sweeney, Nomar, Jones (take a good, long time healing up, bud) are asked to kindly step aside. Pierre? He’s the albatross…or the fly in the youth movement, anyway. He stays but subs. But promote Repko and let him play center.

Reading where Colletti is working hard to get us a veteran utility infielder. Use your imaginations of what he’ll come up with. Will DY be the trading bait, or will Colletti go even higher to come up with that “solution”? In the meantime, DeWitt can take grounders at second and LaRoche can try second base at AAA, but management won’t have the guts to really try that solution on the field. I only hope that Colletti is GONE at the end of the season – it would be so great if he was GONE earlier than that.
On a separate note, and I’m a fan of Brox in the long run, Brox is not performing in the 8th inning relief role. Beimel has much better stats, and it’s not solely against lefties. It might be worth turning the 8th inning role over to him for a few games to see what happens.

We are begging you, please don’t sign any utility veterans. There is plenty of talent right in front of your eyes. We are, for the most part, patient fans, and we want the young talent to play and develop. We are willing to wait out the growing pains, and no, that doesn’t mean we are giving up on this season. We think if you stay with the young talent now, we have a great chance to be at the top of our division. The veterans have had 1/3 of a season to show us that they can be the leaders that they are supposed to be to our young players, and they have come up short. So, it’s time to let the kids play and get the job done. I don’t think you will regret it – trust the fans – play the kids!!!!!!!!!!!

I am also trying to get some of my own kids’ music in the mix (mild hip hop for me). This is just too crazy (but too fun) that I will never listen to a song the same way again.
LOL Nelly. It’s a gift, a curse, or probably a combination of both. HaHa. I wish they would just go with the kids and unload the vets as they are pretty much washed up. Arizona did it, look at the Marlins and Rays. Braves have even done it. Cleveland to some extent. It takes some patience as there will be growing pains as we call them but we are not going anywhere with the Nomore’s, Kant’s, Phew’s, and Schidt’s. We can either be watching the kids play and grow or watch the vets in decline. I would rather suffer the losses watching the kids grow than watch the team lose watching old players that just can’t get it done anymore. Losing with the young’uns because of inexperienced mistakes is much easier than losing with washed up vets because they just don’t have it. At least with the kids, you’ve got a future. The vets aren’t going to be around in a year or two thank god. They do not figure into the future of this team. Play the kids for our futures sake.

I’m looking at the Rosenthal article and wondering how it is that Sweeney rates any kind of a quote about what is going on. The only legitimate quote I’d like to see from him is an answer to the question like “do you think about hanging it up considering how your season is going, now that it’s almost a third over?”

Have fun watching the game today, everybody. My sister is getting married today at 3pm (PST), so I may be able to catch a little bit here and there via phone.
