Young at Heart – Mark Langill
Happy 91st birthday today to Herb Lewis, a Pacific Palisades resident who remains one of the oldest active baseball players in the country. The former jewelery executive began attending the Dodger Adult Camp in Vero Beach, FL in 1989 and will be attending his 20th camp in November. Lewis also plays with the Dodgertown West League of alumni campers on Sundays in the City of Commerce.
Lewis grew up in the Philadelphia area and recalls as a boy attending both Athletics and Phillies games. He watched Babe Ruth in the later years of his Yankees’ career at Shibe Park when the Bronx Bombers met Connie Mack’s defending 1931 World Championship team. Lewis often dodged cars while chasing home-run baseballs which sailed over the wall at Baker Bowl, the home of the Phillies, and resold them to neighborhood kids for a dime, which later served as his admission to the movie theater. "A lot of people I play against can’t believe it when people tell them how old the second baseman is," Lewis says. "But to me, age is just a number."

I had the good fortune to attend Dodger fantasy camp some years ago and played against Herb. He was 81 at the time and he hit a little single up the middle that drove in what turned out to be the winning run. I was playing second base and as soon as he hit the ball, I knew it was going through for a base hit. Way to go Herb!
